WEBVTT
00:02:10.219 --> 00:02:15.020
Welcome back to Bible Basically, where we are figuring out faith together.
00:02:16.300 --> 00:02:33.099
Last week we talked about grief and the importance of knowing that God meets us in our grief and that grief is okay, that we're expected to grieve.
00:02:33.259 --> 00:02:41.180
And I'm so touched at some of the responses that I've gotten regarding that episode.
00:02:42.060 --> 00:02:45.100
You know, it's a if it's it's a difficult subject to talk about.
00:02:45.259 --> 00:02:49.180
We've all gone through it, and we all will go through it.
00:02:49.259 --> 00:02:52.460
You know, it's it's and it's a perfectly natural process.
00:02:53.259 --> 00:03:00.219
This week I want to jump back on the day-to-day train, right?
00:03:00.300 --> 00:03:07.180
The the topics that really help us with our everyday lives.
00:03:08.780 --> 00:03:13.900
And one of the things that I want to talk about is prayer.
00:03:14.219 --> 00:03:26.060
And not only the importance of prayer, because we we should be praying every day, but uh realistically, have you ever been taught how to pray?
00:03:29.180 --> 00:03:32.379
I mean, you know, you listen to other people, right?
00:03:32.780 --> 00:03:36.620
I'm sure you've listened to other people pray and thought, man, that's beautiful.
00:03:36.699 --> 00:03:38.379
I could never pray like that.
00:03:38.699 --> 00:03:41.420
It's like they seemed to know exactly what to say.
00:03:41.740 --> 00:03:45.100
Every sentence was deep and profound.
00:03:45.340 --> 00:03:55.660
Maybe they quoted scripture from memory or prayed for 10 straight minutes without stumbling over a single word, or sometimes even longer.
00:03:55.900 --> 00:03:57.740
And then it's your turn.
00:03:58.060 --> 00:04:00.300
And suddenly your mind goes blank.
00:04:00.460 --> 00:04:15.180
Uh, you start wondering if you're supposed to sound more spiritual, or if you should say, you know, Father God or Heavenly Father, every other sentence, or should you fold your hands or close your eyes, or even kneel?
00:04:17.180 --> 00:04:26.060
I mean, look, some people even think, and uh when I was younger, I thought this do you need to pray for a certain amount of time before God takes it seriously?
00:04:27.259 --> 00:04:32.379
So if you've ever wondered, am I doing this right?
00:04:32.939 --> 00:04:35.180
You are absolutely not alone.
00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:41.980
In fact, when we start looking at biblical examples of this, the disciples wondered the exact same thing.
00:04:42.139 --> 00:04:44.060
Now, think about that, okay?
00:04:45.100 --> 00:04:50.300
These were guys who watched Jesus heal the sick.
00:04:52.300 --> 00:05:06.460
They watched him calm storms and raise the dead, and yet the one thing they specifically asked him to teach was how to pray.
00:05:08.300 --> 00:05:13.659
So if they needed help, there's no shame in admitting that we need help too.
00:05:13.899 --> 00:05:17.100
And today we're going to look at the answer that Jesus gave.
00:05:17.340 --> 00:05:18.539
Not man's opinion.
00:05:18.700 --> 00:05:24.060
So, in other words, we're not going to some internet source to find this.
00:05:24.220 --> 00:05:27.819
We're not looking at church traditions, we're not looking at social media.
00:05:27.980 --> 00:05:33.259
We are basically looking at the words of the man himself, Jesus.
00:05:33.420 --> 00:05:37.500
And they it's basically it starts in Luke 11, verse 1.
00:05:37.659 --> 00:05:51.259
Luke 11, verse 1 says, Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.
00:05:51.500 --> 00:05:55.180
And I want to stop, and I want you to notice something interesting.
00:05:55.420 --> 00:06:02.139
The disciples didn't ask, teach us how to preach or perform miracles or how to lead.
00:06:03.580 --> 00:06:07.259
They asked, teach us to pray.
00:06:10.939 --> 00:06:14.779
Prayer wasn't something that they assumed everyone naturally understood.
00:06:14.860 --> 00:06:16.539
It had to be learned.
00:06:17.980 --> 00:06:23.980
And for us, that's encouraging because, like me, maybe no one ever taught you.
00:06:25.259 --> 00:06:29.419
Maybe you've been a Christian for years, but still feel awkward praying.
00:06:29.500 --> 00:06:30.539
I know I do.
00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:38.700
I have the privilege of praying in front of my church congregation every once in a while.
00:06:38.940 --> 00:06:46.940
And every time I do, I am just nervous as all getting out.
00:06:51.500 --> 00:06:57.100
And oftentimes I ask the Lord, I'm like, Lord, I hope I'm doing this right.
00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:07.980
And the nice thing is when the disciples asked him, Jesus wasn't annoyed by this question, and he doesn't get annoyed when we ask it of him now.
00:07:08.220 --> 00:07:09.259
He just answered it.
00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:11.019
He gave us a pattern.
00:07:12.299 --> 00:07:26.860
Jesus responds with the prayer, the Lord's prayer, the prayer that almost everybody knows that we recite in churches that is spoken aloud amongst most denominations across the world.
00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:32.940
There's nothing wrong with praying those exact words, by the way.
00:07:33.100 --> 00:07:34.700
They are scripture.
00:07:35.820 --> 00:07:39.100
But I want you to notice something in the Lord's Prayer.
00:07:39.259 --> 00:07:41.259
I want you to know what he was doing.
00:07:41.580 --> 00:07:44.460
He wasn't saying, pray this prayer.
00:07:45.580 --> 00:07:48.060
He was saying, pray like this.
00:07:48.299 --> 00:07:55.100
He was giving us a model, a framework, a roadmap.
00:07:55.659 --> 00:08:05.500
So I want you to think of the Lord's Prayer less like a script that you have to recite, but more like an outline for a real conversation with God.
00:08:07.179 --> 00:08:09.500
And let's let's walk through it line by line, okay?
00:08:09.659 --> 00:08:10.539
One line at a time.
00:08:10.779 --> 00:08:13.019
Matthew 6, 9 through 13.
00:08:13.580 --> 00:08:24.379
Jesus starts off and says, Pray then like this, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
00:08:24.940 --> 00:08:31.100
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
00:08:31.659 --> 00:08:44.539
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:08:46.460 --> 00:08:48.620
Now let's pause here.
00:08:49.500 --> 00:08:51.100
I want to slow it down.
00:08:52.139 --> 00:08:54.620
I want to take this line by line.
00:08:54.940 --> 00:09:02.060
Our Father in heaven, our Father who art in heaven, however you speak it.
00:09:03.659 --> 00:09:11.019
The first two words, our Father, denote our relationship with him.
00:09:11.580 --> 00:09:15.500
Everything begins with relationship.
00:09:15.740 --> 00:09:17.980
And we've talked about this in the past.
00:09:20.060 --> 00:09:27.100
Jesus could have taught us to begin with Almighty Creator or Sovereign King or Judge, right?
00:09:27.259 --> 00:09:31.580
All those titles are true, but he chose father.
00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:38.299
And that word changes everything.
00:09:38.539 --> 00:09:42.860
Prayer is not about trying to get the attention of some distant God.
00:09:43.340 --> 00:09:47.100
It's a child speaking to a loving father.
00:09:48.700 --> 00:09:51.259
Now, it doesn't remove reverence.
00:09:51.580 --> 00:09:54.539
He's still in heaven, he's still holy.
00:09:55.659 --> 00:09:57.899
But he's also inviting us near.
00:10:01.019 --> 00:10:11.019
If we look at other verses in the Bible, uh Hebrews 4 16 reminds us that he's inviting us near.
00:10:11.100 --> 00:10:14.299
It says, let us then be with confidence.
00:10:14.460 --> 00:10:24.940
Oh, let us, excuse me, let us then with confidence drive, draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
00:10:25.100 --> 00:10:29.500
Let me read that again because my face did not work the way I wanted it to.
00:10:29.820 --> 00:10:40.220
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
00:10:40.379 --> 00:10:42.779
I want you to notice the invitation there.
00:10:44.939 --> 00:10:47.980
There's confidence, not arrogance.
00:10:48.220 --> 00:10:49.899
Confidence because of Jesus.
00:10:50.059 --> 00:10:52.779
You don't have to earn an audience with God.
00:10:52.860 --> 00:10:55.659
We've gone over that over and over and over.
00:10:55.899 --> 00:10:57.819
Jesus already made a way.
00:11:03.819 --> 00:11:13.980
So right off the bat, when we look at how to open this prayer before we ask God for anything, all we have to do is remember who we're talking to.
00:11:16.139 --> 00:11:17.579
Dear Father.
00:11:26.299 --> 00:11:30.620
It basically means holy or revered or set apart.
00:11:31.899 --> 00:11:35.500
So part two of this, okay.
00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:37.659
First part, who are we talking to?
00:11:37.819 --> 00:11:41.579
We're talking to our Father, our holy father, but our father.
00:11:41.740 --> 00:11:44.299
We have a relationship with God.
00:11:44.860 --> 00:11:45.179
Okay.
00:11:48.299 --> 00:11:51.899
And then Jesus goes right into worship.
00:11:52.459 --> 00:11:54.539
Hallowed be your name.
00:12:06.699 --> 00:12:10.860
But Jesus reminds us to pause first and think about his goodness.
00:12:23.740 --> 00:12:25.740
Think about his faithfulness.
00:12:30.620 --> 00:12:35.579
Jesus wants us to think about his mercy and his patience and his love.
00:12:36.699 --> 00:12:40.139
In fact, Psalm one o' three captures that beautifully.
00:12:40.299 --> 00:12:43.259
Psalm one o three, verses one through five.
00:12:43.419 --> 00:12:49.259
It says, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me.
00:12:49.500 --> 00:12:51.579
Bless his holy name.
00:12:51.819 --> 00:13:14.459
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good, so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.
00:13:18.220 --> 00:13:24.459
Sometimes the healthiest way to begin prayer is simply by thanking God for who he is.
00:13:26.779 --> 00:13:28.779
Not just what he's done.
00:13:31.579 --> 00:13:33.579
Hallowed be thy name.
00:13:37.340 --> 00:13:41.419
So we go from relationship to praise.
00:13:47.340 --> 00:13:50.939
Your kingdom come, your will be done.
00:13:51.259 --> 00:13:55.340
And this might be the hardest sentence in the entire prayer.
00:13:56.860 --> 00:14:12.459
Because I would rather pray, I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather say, my kingdom come, my plans succeed on my schedule during my timing for my desires, because we are egocentric, right?
00:14:12.699 --> 00:14:13.980
Everything is about us.
00:14:14.139 --> 00:14:15.500
We are we're praying to him.
00:14:15.740 --> 00:14:17.179
Look, let's be real.
00:14:17.340 --> 00:14:23.100
When we pray to God, a lot of times we are asking for something.
00:14:28.299 --> 00:14:30.379
There's nothing wrong with that.
00:14:35.340 --> 00:14:41.179
But we need to understand that God's will is what needs to be done.
00:14:43.340 --> 00:14:48.699
Jesus teaches us something radically different than focusing on ourselves.
00:14:48.939 --> 00:14:55.740
Prayer isn't about convincing God to follow our plans, but it's about allowing him to reshape ours.
00:14:57.500 --> 00:15:00.539
Jesus modeled this in the Garden of Gethsemane, okay?
00:15:00.860 --> 00:15:02.459
Right before he was captured.
00:15:02.699 --> 00:15:05.980
Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me.
00:15:06.139 --> 00:15:08.779
Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.
00:15:08.860 --> 00:15:10.860
That's Luke 22, 42.
00:15:12.299 --> 00:15:15.259
So Jesus was honest.
00:15:17.500 --> 00:15:19.340
He expressed his desire.
00:15:19.659 --> 00:15:29.980
He petitioned God to take the cup of death from him, saying, Hey, look, this is gonna be tough.
00:15:30.299 --> 00:15:33.179
Can you give this to anybody else?
00:15:37.259 --> 00:15:41.819
But if you can't, your will be done.
00:15:44.220 --> 00:15:46.459
And that's what prayer looks like.
00:15:47.340 --> 00:15:49.579
You can tell God exactly what you want.
00:15:49.740 --> 00:15:50.620
You don't have to hide it.
00:15:50.779 --> 00:15:52.220
He knows your heart.
00:15:53.740 --> 00:16:00.299
But true, mature prayer also says, I trust you more than I trust myself.
00:16:00.539 --> 00:16:03.579
I trust you, Lord, more than I trust myself.
00:16:03.659 --> 00:16:11.419
That takes humility, and sometimes that is the hardest prayer to pray.
00:16:14.939 --> 00:16:17.100
We don't want to surrender.
00:16:17.340 --> 00:16:20.459
Our nature is not to surrender.
00:16:20.939 --> 00:16:24.860
Our nature is to fight and try and get what we want.
00:16:30.939 --> 00:16:35.340
But we need to remember that ultimately it is his will.
00:16:42.699 --> 00:16:49.259
Ultimately, it is his desires for us because he knows best.
00:16:57.659 --> 00:17:05.900
So recapping again, our relationship with God, he is our Father.
00:17:06.779 --> 00:17:08.539
We praise your name.
00:17:08.860 --> 00:17:10.779
Hallowed be your name.
00:17:17.100 --> 00:17:21.579
And then your kingdom come, your will be done.
00:17:21.819 --> 00:17:24.059
We submit to him.
00:17:25.579 --> 00:17:28.940
On top of our desires, Lord, this is what I want.
00:17:30.539 --> 00:17:32.460
But I want what you want more.
00:17:41.579 --> 00:17:48.460
Now, here's an important part of this prayer coming up next that I really want you to understand.
00:17:49.019 --> 00:18:00.059
Because I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel like I can't bother God with the trivial, right?
00:18:00.220 --> 00:18:01.500
The little things.
00:18:03.100 --> 00:18:05.100
Oh Lord, I hope I don't stub my toe.
00:18:05.180 --> 00:18:06.220
It's dark.
00:18:08.779 --> 00:18:09.100
Okay.
00:18:09.660 --> 00:18:17.180
But in in the in the prayer, Jesus says, give us this day our daily bread.
00:18:21.579 --> 00:18:25.259
And this part of the prayer is beautifully simple.
00:18:25.420 --> 00:18:28.059
There's nothing deep about this.
00:18:28.299 --> 00:18:30.779
Jesus doesn't say, give us this year's bread.
00:18:30.940 --> 00:18:33.420
He doesn't say give us enough for the next 20 years.
00:18:33.660 --> 00:18:38.779
He says, Lord, give us this day our daily bread.
00:18:38.940 --> 00:18:39.420
Why?
00:18:39.740 --> 00:18:44.620
Because God wants us to learn daily dependence.
00:18:45.900 --> 00:18:49.259
He wants to talk to you every day.
00:18:49.579 --> 00:18:53.180
He wants to hear from you every day.
00:18:55.579 --> 00:19:00.140
And the Israelites learned this lesson in the wilderness when God provided mana.
00:19:02.860 --> 00:19:05.740
They weren't allowed to hoard it for tomorrow.
00:19:05.900 --> 00:19:07.420
They couldn't keep any of it.
00:19:07.660 --> 00:19:10.539
They had to trust him again with the next day.
00:19:11.579 --> 00:19:16.540
And God was teaching them that dependence isn't a one-time decision.
00:19:19.180 --> 00:19:20.860
It's a daily rhythm.
00:19:22.300 --> 00:19:24.380
Open your eyes, wake up.
00:19:24.700 --> 00:19:27.900
Lord, give us this day our daily bread.
00:19:28.780 --> 00:19:30.780
Take care of me today.
00:19:32.700 --> 00:19:33.580
Not all week.
00:19:33.740 --> 00:19:35.259
Take care of me today.
00:19:35.420 --> 00:19:37.100
Lord, I'm going to ask you again tomorrow.
00:19:37.259 --> 00:19:39.019
Take care of me today.
00:19:39.259 --> 00:19:41.259
Jesus echoes that principle.
00:19:41.420 --> 00:19:47.420
Notice he says our daily bread, but our daily bread represents more than just food.
00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:48.460
Right?
00:19:48.540 --> 00:19:54.700
It's everything that we need to faithfully live for him today.
00:19:55.580 --> 00:20:01.580
Strength, wisdom, peace, provision, patience, forgiveness.
00:20:02.220 --> 00:20:06.380
And sometimes we think that God is too busy for little things, right?
00:20:06.540 --> 00:20:08.700
Like I said, I don't want to bother him.
00:20:10.700 --> 00:20:13.100
But Jesus tells us the opposite.
00:20:14.460 --> 00:20:16.620
Bring me your daily needs.
00:20:16.940 --> 00:20:17.900
Dennis.
00:20:19.900 --> 00:20:21.980
Dennis, bring me your daily needs.
00:20:22.060 --> 00:20:23.420
Talk to me every day.
00:20:23.740 --> 00:20:26.700
God cares about the ordinary parts of our life.
00:20:29.660 --> 00:20:32.460
Later on in Matthew 6, he reinforces that.
00:20:32.780 --> 00:20:34.060
He talks about anxiety.
00:20:34.220 --> 00:20:35.820
We've read these verses before together.
00:20:35.980 --> 00:20:37.820
Matthew 6, 31 through 34.
00:20:37.980 --> 00:20:43.259
Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?
00:20:43.580 --> 00:20:49.660
For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
00:20:49.980 --> 00:20:55.820
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
00:20:56.220 --> 00:21:01.660
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.
00:21:01.900 --> 00:21:05.580
Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
00:21:07.259 --> 00:21:09.580
And I want you to notice the pattern there.
00:21:10.300 --> 00:21:14.620
God doesn't promise to answer next year's questions today.
00:21:15.180 --> 00:21:19.820
He gives us today's grace for today's needs.
00:21:21.900 --> 00:21:24.700
And that's why prayer is meant to be continual.
00:21:28.620 --> 00:21:31.900
We need to hit him up every day.
00:21:32.380 --> 00:21:35.259
God, give me the strength to live for you.
00:21:35.580 --> 00:21:38.220
Give me the wisdom to live for you.
00:21:48.220 --> 00:21:50.700
Give us this day our daily bread.
00:21:53.980 --> 00:21:55.820
Forgive us our debts.
00:21:59.340 --> 00:22:02.220
This is where prayer becomes deeply personal.
00:22:02.540 --> 00:22:08.460
Jesus reminds us that prayer is not only about asking, but it's also about honesty.
00:22:08.860 --> 00:22:13.340
None of us approaches God perfectly.
00:22:14.780 --> 00:22:17.580
Every single one of us falls short.
00:22:35.100 --> 00:22:43.180
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
00:22:43.340 --> 00:22:51.820
So if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
00:22:51.980 --> 00:22:55.820
Notice what confession is: it's not informing God.
00:22:55.980 --> 00:22:57.019
God already knows.
00:22:57.180 --> 00:22:57.500
Okay.
00:22:57.900 --> 00:22:59.259
God knows what you did.
00:22:59.500 --> 00:23:00.940
God knows what you wanted.
00:23:01.100 --> 00:23:02.540
God knows what you looked at.
00:23:02.700 --> 00:23:04.380
God knows what's in your heart.
00:23:04.620 --> 00:23:08.220
Confession is admitting it and agreeing with God.
00:23:08.460 --> 00:23:13.980
It is saying basically, Lord, I was wrong.
00:23:15.900 --> 00:23:18.540
It's not trying to justify it or make excuses.
00:23:18.700 --> 00:23:21.019
It's not blaming somebody else or minimizing it.
00:23:21.100 --> 00:23:22.940
It is just honesty.
00:23:28.300 --> 00:23:30.860
And first John tells us his response.
00:23:31.100 --> 00:23:33.100
He is faithful and just.
00:23:33.980 --> 00:23:37.100
He is forgiving and cleansing.
00:23:42.620 --> 00:23:44.460
Think about your own life.
00:23:45.019 --> 00:23:46.780
Think about someone you know.
00:23:47.259 --> 00:23:53.980
Some people spend years carrying guilt that Jesus already paid for.
00:23:57.660 --> 00:24:07.100
And prayer reminds us that forgiveness isn't something we earn, it is something that Christ already purchased on the cross.
00:24:09.740 --> 00:24:19.740
Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.
00:24:21.180 --> 00:24:23.580
Oof, there's another tough part.
00:24:25.660 --> 00:24:28.460
It might be the most uncomfortable part of the prayer.
00:24:29.259 --> 00:24:31.580
Because it's easy to receive grace.
00:24:34.940 --> 00:24:36.940
But how hard is it to give it?
00:24:41.340 --> 00:24:43.820
Now, Jesus isn't saying forgiveness is easy.
00:24:44.060 --> 00:24:44.780
He knows it isn't.
00:24:44.860 --> 00:24:47.019
We've done a whole episode on forgiveness.
00:24:47.259 --> 00:24:48.940
It is not easy.
00:24:49.420 --> 00:24:51.500
Some wounds run incredibly deep.
00:24:51.580 --> 00:24:54.140
Some betrayals change lives forever.
00:24:54.380 --> 00:24:57.259
Forgiveness doesn't mean pretending something didn't happen.
00:24:57.420 --> 00:25:01.180
It doesn't mean trust is instantly restored.
00:25:01.500 --> 00:25:09.100
And it definitely doesn't mean that the abuse should continue, but it does mean refusing to let bitterness become our master.
00:25:11.420 --> 00:25:22.460
In Ephesians 4, 31 and 32, Paul writes, Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with all malice.
00:25:22.780 --> 00:25:29.740
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you.
00:25:34.060 --> 00:25:36.860
So forgiveness isn't saying what happened was okay.
00:25:37.019 --> 00:25:42.780
It's saying I'm not going to let this wound become the thing that defines my heart.
00:25:49.500 --> 00:25:52.380
When we pray, it changes us.
00:25:55.420 --> 00:25:57.580
Not just our circumstances.
00:26:03.500 --> 00:26:06.700
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:26:06.860 --> 00:26:09.900
Forgive us our debt as we have forgiven our debtors.
00:26:10.220 --> 00:26:15.100
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:26:15.420 --> 00:26:18.780
Jesus finishes with dependence again.
00:26:21.259 --> 00:26:23.420
Every one of us is vulnerable.
00:26:23.900 --> 00:26:26.300
No one is beyond temptation.
00:26:29.180 --> 00:26:34.380
And that's why prayer isn't something that we do after we've fallen.
00:26:35.500 --> 00:26:38.620
It's something we do before the battle begins.
00:26:42.140 --> 00:26:49.420
Paul in 1 Corinthians 10, 13, says, No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.
00:26:49.660 --> 00:26:53.740
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability.
00:26:53.980 --> 00:26:59.660
But with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
00:27:02.620 --> 00:27:07.019
I think this is where we get the notion God can't give you a battle that you can't handle.
00:27:17.580 --> 00:27:22.300
He always gives you a way out, but the important thing is to look for that way out.
00:27:22.460 --> 00:27:25.100
And prayer trains us to look for that.
00:27:26.860 --> 00:27:31.980
Prayer trains us to rely on God's strength instead of our own.
00:27:47.019 --> 00:27:47.660
I can do that.
00:27:47.820 --> 00:27:48.780
I can do that.
00:27:49.019 --> 00:27:51.100
But every time I try to do that, I climb up.
00:27:51.259 --> 00:27:53.100
What if I just don't know what to say?
00:27:56.220 --> 00:28:01.580
Maybe you sat quietly and you wanted to pray, but your mind went completely blank.
00:28:02.860 --> 00:28:03.980
Good news.
00:28:04.300 --> 00:28:06.140
Bible talks about that too.
00:28:06.700 --> 00:28:08.940
Romans 8, 26 and 27.
00:28:09.100 --> 00:28:16.300
Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought.
00:28:16.620 --> 00:28:21.340
But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
00:28:22.060 --> 00:28:30.140
And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
00:28:30.380 --> 00:28:31.740
Did you catch that?
00:28:33.100 --> 00:28:37.820
Paul doesn't say if you know what to pray, he says when.
00:28:49.740 --> 00:28:51.500
Sometimes there aren't words.
00:28:51.740 --> 00:28:53.900
Sometimes the pain is too much.
00:28:54.060 --> 00:28:55.980
Sometimes you're exhausted.
00:28:59.019 --> 00:29:03.259
Sometimes all you can manage is God help.
00:29:07.820 --> 00:29:11.580
And the scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit meets us right there.
00:29:12.940 --> 00:29:15.259
Even when our prayers aren't complete.
00:29:18.380 --> 00:29:25.980
He intercedes on our behalf and he communicates our needs in a way that we could never.
00:29:32.380 --> 00:29:36.300
And the next question a lot of people ask is what if I don't feel anything?
00:29:39.900 --> 00:29:41.580
What if I don't feel closer to God?
00:29:41.740 --> 00:29:44.780
Everybody thinks that they need to feel close to God when they pray.
00:29:44.940 --> 00:29:45.420
Not always.
00:29:45.580 --> 00:29:47.660
Prayer is not measured by emotion.
00:29:49.980 --> 00:29:53.740
Think about your closest relationships, your closest human relationships.
00:29:53.980 --> 00:29:57.420
You don't stop talking to your spouse because every conversation isn't emotional.
00:29:57.580 --> 00:30:01.660
You don't stop talking to your parents because one conversation felt ordinary.
00:30:02.140 --> 00:30:07.100
Relationships are not built on emotional highs, they're built on faithfulness.
00:30:08.860 --> 00:30:10.220
Prayer works the same way.
00:30:10.380 --> 00:30:14.460
Some days you feel God's closeness in a powerful way.
00:30:14.620 --> 00:30:19.340
And other days, it will simply feel like obedience.
00:30:19.820 --> 00:30:21.420
Keep praying anyway.
00:30:23.820 --> 00:30:28.460
Faithfulness often grows long before feelings catch up.
00:30:33.820 --> 00:30:35.740
All right, let's recap here.
00:30:37.180 --> 00:30:40.300
If you've never really known how to pray, start here.
00:30:41.420 --> 00:30:42.140
Praise.
00:30:42.460 --> 00:30:44.540
God, thank you for being faithful.
00:30:47.420 --> 00:30:48.540
Surrender.
00:30:48.940 --> 00:30:50.940
Help me want what you want.
00:30:53.980 --> 00:30:54.940
Provision.
00:30:56.140 --> 00:30:57.980
Here's what I need today.
00:30:58.540 --> 00:30:59.420
Confession.
00:30:59.580 --> 00:31:01.420
Here's where I messed up.
00:31:03.340 --> 00:31:04.300
Forgiveness.
00:31:04.460 --> 00:31:06.060
Help me forgive.
00:31:07.100 --> 00:31:08.060
Protection.
00:31:09.100 --> 00:31:10.700
Lead me today.
00:31:12.060 --> 00:31:12.700
That's it.
00:31:12.860 --> 00:31:14.860
You don't need impressive words.
00:31:15.100 --> 00:31:18.460
You don't need a certain posture or perfect vocabulary.
00:31:18.700 --> 00:31:20.540
You just need honesty.
00:31:24.220 --> 00:31:29.100
The disciples asked Jesus, teach us to pray.
00:31:29.340 --> 00:31:31.340
Lord, teach us to pray.
00:31:31.580 --> 00:31:34.940
And Jesus answered with a relationship.
00:31:35.259 --> 00:31:38.620
He didn't hand them a formula for getting everything they wanted.
00:31:38.860 --> 00:31:42.540
He showed them how children speak to a loving father.
00:31:44.140 --> 00:31:51.500
So if you are out there and you've been waiting until you knew the right words, stop waiting.
00:31:52.700 --> 00:31:54.220
Start talking.
00:31:55.019 --> 00:31:56.780
Open the conversation.
00:31:57.180 --> 00:32:00.540
Some days your prayer may last 30 minutes.
00:32:03.340 --> 00:32:06.060
Some days it may last 30 seconds.
00:32:07.660 --> 00:32:10.620
Both can be beautiful if they are genuine.
00:32:12.140 --> 00:32:16.700
Prayer's not about saying the perfect thing, it's about spending time with the perfect Savior.
00:32:18.220 --> 00:32:21.820
So this week, I want to challenge you.
00:32:22.940 --> 00:32:30.380
I want you to open Matthew chapter six and read one line of the Lord's Prayer.
00:32:32.700 --> 00:32:38.540
Then I want you to pause and I want you to talk to God about that one line.
00:32:40.700 --> 00:32:42.620
And maybe that's all you pray that day.
00:32:44.220 --> 00:32:49.740
Maybe that's where your relationship with Him begins to grow in a way it never has before.
00:32:50.060 --> 00:32:54.620
Because at the end of the day, prayer is not a performance.
00:32:56.060 --> 00:33:02.540
It's a conversation with a God who already knows your name, but he still wants to hear your voice.
00:33:07.180 --> 00:33:13.420
Guys, as usual, thank you so much for listening to my podcast, Bible Basically.
00:33:15.500 --> 00:33:21.340
If this episode encouraged you, I want you to share it with someone who's ever thought, I don't know how to pray.
00:33:21.740 --> 00:33:28.380
Sometimes the most freeing truth is realizing that Jesus already answered that question.
00:33:29.980 --> 00:33:36.220
Till next time, let's keep figuring out faith together.
00:02:10.219 --> 00:02:15.020
Welcome back to Bible Basically, where we are figuring out faith together.
00:02:16.300 --> 00:02:33.099
Last week we talked about grief and the importance of knowing that God meets us in our grief and that grief is okay, that we're expected to grieve.
00:02:33.259 --> 00:02:41.180
And I'm so touched at some of the responses that I've gotten regarding that episode.
00:02:42.060 --> 00:02:45.100
You know, it's a if it's it's a difficult subject to talk about.
00:02:45.259 --> 00:02:49.180
We've all gone through it, and we all will go through it.
00:02:49.259 --> 00:02:52.460
You know, it's it's and it's a perfectly natural process.
00:02:53.259 --> 00:03:00.219
This week I want to jump back on the day-to-day train, right?
00:03:00.300 --> 00:03:07.180
The the topics that really help us with our everyday lives.
00:03:08.780 --> 00:03:13.900
And one of the things that I want to talk about is prayer.
00:03:14.219 --> 00:03:26.060
And not only the importance of prayer, because we we should be praying every day, but uh realistically, have you ever been taught how to pray?
00:03:29.180 --> 00:03:32.379
I mean, you know, you listen to other people, right?
00:03:32.780 --> 00:03:36.620
I'm sure you've listened to other people pray and thought, man, that's beautiful.
00:03:36.699 --> 00:03:38.379
I could never pray like that.
00:03:38.699 --> 00:03:41.420
It's like they seemed to know exactly what to say.
00:03:41.740 --> 00:03:45.100
Every sentence was deep and profound.
00:03:45.340 --> 00:03:55.660
Maybe they quoted scripture from memory or prayed for 10 straight minutes without stumbling over a single word, or sometimes even longer.
00:03:55.900 --> 00:03:57.740
And then it's your turn.
00:03:58.060 --> 00:04:00.300
And suddenly your mind goes blank.
00:04:00.460 --> 00:04:15.180
Uh, you start wondering if you're supposed to sound more spiritual, or if you should say, you know, Father God or Heavenly Father, every other sentence, or should you fold your hands or close your eyes, or even kneel?
00:04:17.180 --> 00:04:26.060
I mean, look, some people even think, and uh when I was younger, I thought this do you need to pray for a certain amount of time before God takes it seriously?
00:04:27.259 --> 00:04:32.379
So if you've ever wondered, am I doing this right?
00:04:32.939 --> 00:04:35.180
You are absolutely not alone.
00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:41.980
In fact, when we start looking at biblical examples of this, the disciples wondered the exact same thing.
00:04:42.139 --> 00:04:44.060
Now, think about that, okay?
00:04:45.100 --> 00:04:50.300
These were guys who watched Jesus heal the sick.
00:04:52.300 --> 00:05:06.460
They watched him calm storms and raise the dead, and yet the one thing they specifically asked him to teach was how to pray.
00:05:08.300 --> 00:05:13.659
So if they needed help, there's no shame in admitting that we need help too.
00:05:13.899 --> 00:05:17.100
And today we're going to look at the answer that Jesus gave.
00:05:17.340 --> 00:05:18.539
Not man's opinion.
00:05:18.700 --> 00:05:24.060
So, in other words, we're not going to some internet source to find this.
00:05:24.220 --> 00:05:27.819
We're not looking at church traditions, we're not looking at social media.
00:05:27.980 --> 00:05:33.259
We are basically looking at the words of the man himself, Jesus.
00:05:33.420 --> 00:05:37.500
And they it's basically it starts in Luke 11, verse 1.
00:05:37.659 --> 00:05:51.259
Luke 11, verse 1 says, Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.
00:05:51.500 --> 00:05:55.180
And I want to stop, and I want you to notice something interesting.
00:05:55.420 --> 00:06:02.139
The disciples didn't ask, teach us how to preach or perform miracles or how to lead.
00:06:03.580 --> 00:06:07.259
They asked, teach us to pray.
00:06:10.939 --> 00:06:14.779
Prayer wasn't something that they assumed everyone naturally understood.
00:06:14.860 --> 00:06:16.539
It had to be learned.
00:06:17.980 --> 00:06:23.980
And for us, that's encouraging because, like me, maybe no one ever taught you.
00:06:25.259 --> 00:06:29.419
Maybe you've been a Christian for years, but still feel awkward praying.
00:06:29.500 --> 00:06:30.539
I know I do.
00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:38.700
I have the privilege of praying in front of my church congregation every once in a while.
00:06:38.940 --> 00:06:46.940
And every time I do, I am just nervous as all getting out.
00:06:51.500 --> 00:06:57.100
And oftentimes I ask the Lord, I'm like, Lord, I hope I'm doing this right.
00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:07.980
And the nice thing is when the disciples asked him, Jesus wasn't annoyed by this question, and he doesn't get annoyed when we ask it of him now.
00:07:08.220 --> 00:07:09.259
He just answered it.
00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:11.019
He gave us a pattern.
00:07:12.299 --> 00:07:26.860
Jesus responds with the prayer, the Lord's prayer, the prayer that almost everybody knows that we recite in churches that is spoken aloud amongst most denominations across the world.
00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:32.940
There's nothing wrong with praying those exact words, by the way.
00:07:33.100 --> 00:07:34.700
They are scripture.
00:07:35.820 --> 00:07:39.100
But I want you to notice something in the Lord's Prayer.
00:07:39.259 --> 00:07:41.259
I want you to know what he was doing.
00:07:41.580 --> 00:07:44.460
He wasn't saying, pray this prayer.
00:07:45.580 --> 00:07:48.060
He was saying, pray like this.
00:07:48.299 --> 00:07:55.100
He was giving us a model, a framework, a roadmap.
00:07:55.659 --> 00:08:05.500
So I want you to think of the Lord's Prayer less like a script that you have to recite, but more like an outline for a real conversation with God.
00:08:07.179 --> 00:08:09.500
And let's let's walk through it line by line, okay?
00:08:09.659 --> 00:08:10.539
One line at a time.
00:08:10.779 --> 00:08:13.019
Matthew 6, 9 through 13.
00:08:13.580 --> 00:08:24.379
Jesus starts off and says, Pray then like this, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
00:08:24.940 --> 00:08:31.100
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
00:08:31.659 --> 00:08:44.539
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:08:46.460 --> 00:08:48.620
Now let's pause here.
00:08:49.500 --> 00:08:51.100
I want to slow it down.
00:08:52.139 --> 00:08:54.620
I want to take this line by line.
00:08:54.940 --> 00:09:02.060
Our Father in heaven, our Father who art in heaven, however you speak it.
00:09:03.659 --> 00:09:11.019
The first two words, our Father, denote our relationship with him.
00:09:11.580 --> 00:09:15.500
Everything begins with relationship.
00:09:15.740 --> 00:09:17.980
And we've talked about this in the past.
00:09:20.060 --> 00:09:27.100
Jesus could have taught us to begin with Almighty Creator or Sovereign King or Judge, right?
00:09:27.259 --> 00:09:31.580
All those titles are true, but he chose father.
00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:38.299
And that word changes everything.
00:09:38.539 --> 00:09:42.860
Prayer is not about trying to get the attention of some distant God.
00:09:43.340 --> 00:09:47.100
It's a child speaking to a loving father.
00:09:48.700 --> 00:09:51.259
Now, it doesn't remove reverence.
00:09:51.580 --> 00:09:54.539
He's still in heaven, he's still holy.
00:09:55.659 --> 00:09:57.899
But he's also inviting us near.
00:10:01.019 --> 00:10:11.019
If we look at other verses in the Bible, uh Hebrews 4 16 reminds us that he's inviting us near.
00:10:11.100 --> 00:10:14.299
It says, let us then be with confidence.
00:10:14.460 --> 00:10:24.940
Oh, let us, excuse me, let us then with confidence drive, draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
00:10:25.100 --> 00:10:29.500
Let me read that again because my face did not work the way I wanted it to.
00:10:29.820 --> 00:10:40.220
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
00:10:40.379 --> 00:10:42.779
I want you to notice the invitation there.
00:10:44.939 --> 00:10:47.980
There's confidence, not arrogance.
00:10:48.220 --> 00:10:49.899
Confidence because of Jesus.
00:10:50.059 --> 00:10:52.779
You don't have to earn an audience with God.
00:10:52.860 --> 00:10:55.659
We've gone over that over and over and over.
00:10:55.899 --> 00:10:57.819
Jesus already made a way.
00:11:03.819 --> 00:11:13.980
So right off the bat, when we look at how to open this prayer before we ask God for anything, all we have to do is remember who we're talking to.
00:11:16.139 --> 00:11:17.579
Dear Father.
00:11:26.299 --> 00:11:30.620
It basically means holy or revered or set apart.
00:11:31.899 --> 00:11:35.500
So part two of this, okay.
00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:37.659
First part, who are we talking to?
00:11:37.819 --> 00:11:41.579
We're talking to our Father, our holy father, but our father.
00:11:41.740 --> 00:11:44.299
We have a relationship with God.
00:11:44.860 --> 00:11:45.179
Okay.
00:11:48.299 --> 00:11:51.899
And then Jesus goes right into worship.
00:11:52.459 --> 00:11:54.539
Hallowed be your name.
00:12:06.699 --> 00:12:10.860
But Jesus reminds us to pause first and think about his goodness.
00:12:23.740 --> 00:12:25.740
Think about his faithfulness.
00:12:30.620 --> 00:12:35.579
Jesus wants us to think about his mercy and his patience and his love.
00:12:36.699 --> 00:12:40.139
In fact, Psalm one o' three captures that beautifully.
00:12:40.299 --> 00:12:43.259
Psalm one o three, verses one through five.
00:12:43.419 --> 00:12:49.259
It says, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me.
00:12:49.500 --> 00:12:51.579
Bless his holy name.
00:12:51.819 --> 00:13:14.459
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good, so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.
00:13:18.220 --> 00:13:24.459
Sometimes the healthiest way to begin prayer is simply by thanking God for who he is.
00:13:26.779 --> 00:13:28.779
Not just what he's done.
00:13:31.579 --> 00:13:33.579
Hallowed be thy name.
00:13:37.340 --> 00:13:41.419
So we go from relationship to praise.
00:13:47.340 --> 00:13:50.939
Your kingdom come, your will be done.
00:13:51.259 --> 00:13:55.340
And this might be the hardest sentence in the entire prayer.
00:13:56.860 --> 00:14:12.459
Because I would rather pray, I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather say, my kingdom come, my plans succeed on my schedule during my timing for my desires, because we are egocentric, right?
00:14:12.699 --> 00:14:13.980
Everything is about us.
00:14:14.139 --> 00:14:15.500
We are we're praying to him.
00:14:15.740 --> 00:14:17.179
Look, let's be real.
00:14:17.340 --> 00:14:23.100
When we pray to God, a lot of times we are asking for something.
00:14:28.299 --> 00:14:30.379
There's nothing wrong with that.
00:14:35.340 --> 00:14:41.179
But we need to understand that God's will is what needs to be done.
00:14:43.340 --> 00:14:48.699
Jesus teaches us something radically different than focusing on ourselves.
00:14:48.939 --> 00:14:55.740
Prayer isn't about convincing God to follow our plans, but it's about allowing him to reshape ours.
00:14:57.500 --> 00:15:00.539
Jesus modeled this in the Garden of Gethsemane, okay?
00:15:00.860 --> 00:15:02.459
Right before he was captured.
00:15:02.699 --> 00:15:05.980
Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me.
00:15:06.139 --> 00:15:08.779
Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.
00:15:08.860 --> 00:15:10.860
That's Luke 22, 42.
00:15:12.299 --> 00:15:15.259
So Jesus was honest.
00:15:17.500 --> 00:15:19.340
He expressed his desire.
00:15:19.659 --> 00:15:29.980
He petitioned God to take the cup of death from him, saying, Hey, look, this is gonna be tough.
00:15:30.299 --> 00:15:33.179
Can you give this to anybody else?
00:15:37.259 --> 00:15:41.819
But if you can't, your will be done.
00:15:44.220 --> 00:15:46.459
And that's what prayer looks like.
00:15:47.340 --> 00:15:49.579
You can tell God exactly what you want.
00:15:49.740 --> 00:15:50.620
You don't have to hide it.
00:15:50.779 --> 00:15:52.220
He knows your heart.
00:15:53.740 --> 00:16:00.299
But true, mature prayer also says, I trust you more than I trust myself.
00:16:00.539 --> 00:16:03.579
I trust you, Lord, more than I trust myself.
00:16:03.659 --> 00:16:11.419
That takes humility, and sometimes that is the hardest prayer to pray.
00:16:14.939 --> 00:16:17.100
We don't want to surrender.
00:16:17.340 --> 00:16:20.459
Our nature is not to surrender.
00:16:20.939 --> 00:16:24.860
Our nature is to fight and try and get what we want.
00:16:30.939 --> 00:16:35.340
But we need to remember that ultimately it is his will.
00:16:42.699 --> 00:16:49.259
Ultimately, it is his desires for us because he knows best.
00:16:57.659 --> 00:17:05.900
So recapping again, our relationship with God, he is our Father.
00:17:06.779 --> 00:17:08.539
We praise your name.
00:17:08.860 --> 00:17:10.779
Hallowed be your name.
00:17:17.100 --> 00:17:21.579
And then your kingdom come, your will be done.
00:17:21.819 --> 00:17:24.059
We submit to him.
00:17:25.579 --> 00:17:28.940
On top of our desires, Lord, this is what I want.
00:17:30.539 --> 00:17:32.460
But I want what you want more.
00:17:41.579 --> 00:17:48.460
Now, here's an important part of this prayer coming up next that I really want you to understand.
00:17:49.019 --> 00:18:00.059
Because I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel like I can't bother God with the trivial, right?
00:18:00.220 --> 00:18:01.500
The little things.
00:18:03.100 --> 00:18:05.100
Oh Lord, I hope I don't stub my toe.
00:18:05.180 --> 00:18:06.220
It's dark.
00:18:08.779 --> 00:18:09.100
Okay.
00:18:09.660 --> 00:18:17.180
But in in the in the prayer, Jesus says, give us this day our daily bread.
00:18:21.579 --> 00:18:25.259
And this part of the prayer is beautifully simple.
00:18:25.420 --> 00:18:28.059
There's nothing deep about this.
00:18:28.299 --> 00:18:30.779
Jesus doesn't say, give us this year's bread.
00:18:30.940 --> 00:18:33.420
He doesn't say give us enough for the next 20 years.
00:18:33.660 --> 00:18:38.779
He says, Lord, give us this day our daily bread.
00:18:38.940 --> 00:18:39.420
Why?
00:18:39.740 --> 00:18:44.620
Because God wants us to learn daily dependence.
00:18:45.900 --> 00:18:49.259
He wants to talk to you every day.
00:18:49.579 --> 00:18:53.180
He wants to hear from you every day.
00:18:55.579 --> 00:19:00.140
And the Israelites learned this lesson in the wilderness when God provided mana.
00:19:02.860 --> 00:19:05.740
They weren't allowed to hoard it for tomorrow.
00:19:05.900 --> 00:19:07.420
They couldn't keep any of it.
00:19:07.660 --> 00:19:10.539
They had to trust him again with the next day.
00:19:11.579 --> 00:19:16.540
And God was teaching them that dependence isn't a one-time decision.
00:19:19.180 --> 00:19:20.860
It's a daily rhythm.
00:19:22.300 --> 00:19:24.380
Open your eyes, wake up.
00:19:24.700 --> 00:19:27.900
Lord, give us this day our daily bread.
00:19:28.780 --> 00:19:30.780
Take care of me today.
00:19:32.700 --> 00:19:33.580
Not all week.
00:19:33.740 --> 00:19:35.259
Take care of me today.
00:19:35.420 --> 00:19:37.100
Lord, I'm going to ask you again tomorrow.
00:19:37.259 --> 00:19:39.019
Take care of me today.
00:19:39.259 --> 00:19:41.259
Jesus echoes that principle.
00:19:41.420 --> 00:19:47.420
Notice he says our daily bread, but our daily bread represents more than just food.
00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:48.460
Right?
00:19:48.540 --> 00:19:54.700
It's everything that we need to faithfully live for him today.
00:19:55.580 --> 00:20:01.580
Strength, wisdom, peace, provision, patience, forgiveness.
00:20:02.220 --> 00:20:06.380
And sometimes we think that God is too busy for little things, right?
00:20:06.540 --> 00:20:08.700
Like I said, I don't want to bother him.
00:20:10.700 --> 00:20:13.100
But Jesus tells us the opposite.
00:20:14.460 --> 00:20:16.620
Bring me your daily needs.
00:20:16.940 --> 00:20:17.900
Dennis.
00:20:19.900 --> 00:20:21.980
Dennis, bring me your daily needs.
00:20:22.060 --> 00:20:23.420
Talk to me every day.
00:20:23.740 --> 00:20:26.700
God cares about the ordinary parts of our life.
00:20:29.660 --> 00:20:32.460
Later on in Matthew 6, he reinforces that.
00:20:32.780 --> 00:20:34.060
He talks about anxiety.
00:20:34.220 --> 00:20:35.820
We've read these verses before together.
00:20:35.980 --> 00:20:37.820
Matthew 6, 31 through 34.
00:20:37.980 --> 00:20:43.259
Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?
00:20:43.580 --> 00:20:49.660
For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
00:20:49.980 --> 00:20:55.820
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
00:20:56.220 --> 00:21:01.660
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.
00:21:01.900 --> 00:21:05.580
Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
00:21:07.259 --> 00:21:09.580
And I want you to notice the pattern there.
00:21:10.300 --> 00:21:14.620
God doesn't promise to answer next year's questions today.
00:21:15.180 --> 00:21:19.820
He gives us today's grace for today's needs.
00:21:21.900 --> 00:21:24.700
And that's why prayer is meant to be continual.
00:21:28.620 --> 00:21:31.900
We need to hit him up every day.
00:21:32.380 --> 00:21:35.259
God, give me the strength to live for you.
00:21:35.580 --> 00:21:38.220
Give me the wisdom to live for you.
00:21:48.220 --> 00:21:50.700
Give us this day our daily bread.
00:21:53.980 --> 00:21:55.820
Forgive us our debts.
00:21:59.340 --> 00:22:02.220
This is where prayer becomes deeply personal.
00:22:02.540 --> 00:22:08.460
Jesus reminds us that prayer is not only about asking, but it's also about honesty.
00:22:08.860 --> 00:22:13.340
None of us approaches God perfectly.
00:22:14.780 --> 00:22:17.580
Every single one of us falls short.
00:22:35.100 --> 00:22:43.180
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
00:22:43.340 --> 00:22:51.820
So if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
00:22:51.980 --> 00:22:55.820
Notice what confession is: it's not informing God.
00:22:55.980 --> 00:22:57.019
God already knows.
00:22:57.180 --> 00:22:57.500
Okay.
00:22:57.900 --> 00:22:59.259
God knows what you did.
00:22:59.500 --> 00:23:00.940
God knows what you wanted.
00:23:01.100 --> 00:23:02.540
God knows what you looked at.
00:23:02.700 --> 00:23:04.380
God knows what's in your heart.
00:23:04.620 --> 00:23:08.220
Confession is admitting it and agreeing with God.
00:23:08.460 --> 00:23:13.980
It is saying basically, Lord, I was wrong.
00:23:15.900 --> 00:23:18.540
It's not trying to justify it or make excuses.
00:23:18.700 --> 00:23:21.019
It's not blaming somebody else or minimizing it.
00:23:21.100 --> 00:23:22.940
It is just honesty.
00:23:28.300 --> 00:23:30.860
And first John tells us his response.
00:23:31.100 --> 00:23:33.100
He is faithful and just.
00:23:33.980 --> 00:23:37.100
He is forgiving and cleansing.
00:23:42.620 --> 00:23:44.460
Think about your own life.
00:23:45.019 --> 00:23:46.780
Think about someone you know.
00:23:47.259 --> 00:23:53.980
Some people spend years carrying guilt that Jesus already paid for.
00:23:57.660 --> 00:24:07.100
And prayer reminds us that forgiveness isn't something we earn, it is something that Christ already purchased on the cross.
00:24:09.740 --> 00:24:19.740
Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.
00:24:21.180 --> 00:24:23.580
Oof, there's another tough part.
00:24:25.660 --> 00:24:28.460
It might be the most uncomfortable part of the prayer.
00:24:29.259 --> 00:24:31.580
Because it's easy to receive grace.
00:24:34.940 --> 00:24:36.940
But how hard is it to give it?
00:24:41.340 --> 00:24:43.820
Now, Jesus isn't saying forgiveness is easy.
00:24:44.060 --> 00:24:44.780
He knows it isn't.
00:24:44.860 --> 00:24:47.019
We've done a whole episode on forgiveness.
00:24:47.259 --> 00:24:48.940
It is not easy.
00:24:49.420 --> 00:24:51.500
Some wounds run incredibly deep.
00:24:51.580 --> 00:24:54.140
Some betrayals change lives forever.
00:24:54.380 --> 00:24:57.259
Forgiveness doesn't mean pretending something didn't happen.
00:24:57.420 --> 00:25:01.180
It doesn't mean trust is instantly restored.
00:25:01.500 --> 00:25:09.100
And it definitely doesn't mean that the abuse should continue, but it does mean refusing to let bitterness become our master.
00:25:11.420 --> 00:25:22.460
In Ephesians 4, 31 and 32, Paul writes, Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with all malice.
00:25:22.780 --> 00:25:29.740
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you.
00:25:34.060 --> 00:25:36.860
So forgiveness isn't saying what happened was okay.
00:25:37.019 --> 00:25:42.780
It's saying I'm not going to let this wound become the thing that defines my heart.
00:25:49.500 --> 00:25:52.380
When we pray, it changes us.
00:25:55.420 --> 00:25:57.580
Not just our circumstances.
00:26:03.500 --> 00:26:06.700
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:26:06.860 --> 00:26:09.900
Forgive us our debt as we have forgiven our debtors.
00:26:10.220 --> 00:26:15.100
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
00:26:15.420 --> 00:26:18.780
Jesus finishes with dependence again.
00:26:21.259 --> 00:26:23.420
Every one of us is vulnerable.
00:26:23.900 --> 00:26:26.300
No one is beyond temptation.
00:26:29.180 --> 00:26:34.380
And that's why prayer isn't something that we do after we've fallen.
00:26:35.500 --> 00:26:38.620
It's something we do before the battle begins.
00:26:42.140 --> 00:26:49.420
Paul in 1 Corinthians 10, 13, says, No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.
00:26:49.660 --> 00:26:53.740
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability.
00:26:53.980 --> 00:26:59.660
But with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
00:27:02.620 --> 00:27:07.019
I think this is where we get the notion God can't give you a battle that you can't handle.
00:27:17.580 --> 00:27:22.300
He always gives you a way out, but the important thing is to look for that way out.
00:27:22.460 --> 00:27:25.100
And prayer trains us to look for that.
00:27:26.860 --> 00:27:31.980
Prayer trains us to rely on God's strength instead of our own.
00:27:47.019 --> 00:27:47.660
I can do that.
00:27:47.820 --> 00:27:48.780
I can do that.
00:27:49.019 --> 00:27:51.100
But every time I try to do that, I climb up.
00:27:51.259 --> 00:27:53.100
What if I just don't know what to say?
00:27:56.220 --> 00:28:01.580
Maybe you sat quietly and you wanted to pray, but your mind went completely blank.
00:28:02.860 --> 00:28:03.980
Good news.
00:28:04.300 --> 00:28:06.140
Bible talks about that too.
00:28:06.700 --> 00:28:08.940
Romans 8, 26 and 27.
00:28:09.100 --> 00:28:16.300
Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought.
00:28:16.620 --> 00:28:21.340
But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
00:28:22.060 --> 00:28:30.140
And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
00:28:30.380 --> 00:28:31.740
Did you catch that?
00:28:33.100 --> 00:28:37.820
Paul doesn't say if you know what to pray, he says when.
00:28:49.740 --> 00:28:51.500
Sometimes there aren't words.
00:28:51.740 --> 00:28:53.900
Sometimes the pain is too much.
00:28:54.060 --> 00:28:55.980
Sometimes you're exhausted.
00:28:59.019 --> 00:29:03.259
Sometimes all you can manage is God help.
00:29:07.820 --> 00:29:11.580
And the scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit meets us right there.
00:29:12.940 --> 00:29:15.259
Even when our prayers aren't complete.
00:29:18.380 --> 00:29:25.980
He intercedes on our behalf and he communicates our needs in a way that we could never.
00:29:32.380 --> 00:29:36.300
And the next question a lot of people ask is what if I don't feel anything?
00:29:39.900 --> 00:29:41.580
What if I don't feel closer to God?
00:29:41.740 --> 00:29:44.780
Everybody thinks that they need to feel close to God when they pray.
00:29:44.940 --> 00:29:45.420
Not always.
00:29:45.580 --> 00:29:47.660
Prayer is not measured by emotion.
00:29:49.980 --> 00:29:53.740
Think about your closest relationships, your closest human relationships.
00:29:53.980 --> 00:29:57.420
You don't stop talking to your spouse because every conversation isn't emotional.
00:29:57.580 --> 00:30:01.660
You don't stop talking to your parents because one conversation felt ordinary.
00:30:02.140 --> 00:30:07.100
Relationships are not built on emotional highs, they're built on faithfulness.
00:30:08.860 --> 00:30:10.220
Prayer works the same way.
00:30:10.380 --> 00:30:14.460
Some days you feel God's closeness in a powerful way.
00:30:14.620 --> 00:30:19.340
And other days, it will simply feel like obedience.
00:30:19.820 --> 00:30:21.420
Keep praying anyway.
00:30:23.820 --> 00:30:28.460
Faithfulness often grows long before feelings catch up.
00:30:33.820 --> 00:30:35.740
All right, let's recap here.
00:30:37.180 --> 00:30:40.300
If you've never really known how to pray, start here.
00:30:41.420 --> 00:30:42.140
Praise.
00:30:42.460 --> 00:30:44.540
God, thank you for being faithful.
00:30:47.420 --> 00:30:48.540
Surrender.
00:30:48.940 --> 00:30:50.940
Help me want what you want.
00:30:53.980 --> 00:30:54.940
Provision.
00:30:56.140 --> 00:30:57.980
Here's what I need today.
00:30:58.540 --> 00:30:59.420
Confession.
00:30:59.580 --> 00:31:01.420
Here's where I messed up.
00:31:03.340 --> 00:31:04.300
Forgiveness.
00:31:04.460 --> 00:31:06.060
Help me forgive.
00:31:07.100 --> 00:31:08.060
Protection.
00:31:09.100 --> 00:31:10.700
Lead me today.
00:31:12.060 --> 00:31:12.700
That's it.
00:31:12.860 --> 00:31:14.860
You don't need impressive words.
00:31:15.100 --> 00:31:18.460
You don't need a certain posture or perfect vocabulary.
00:31:18.700 --> 00:31:20.540
You just need honesty.
00:31:24.220 --> 00:31:29.100
The disciples asked Jesus, teach us to pray.
00:31:29.340 --> 00:31:31.340
Lord, teach us to pray.
00:31:31.580 --> 00:31:34.940
And Jesus answered with a relationship.
00:31:35.259 --> 00:31:38.620
He didn't hand them a formula for getting everything they wanted.
00:31:38.860 --> 00:31:42.540
He showed them how children speak to a loving father.
00:31:44.140 --> 00:31:51.500
So if you are out there and you've been waiting until you knew the right words, stop waiting.
00:31:52.700 --> 00:31:54.220
Start talking.
00:31:55.019 --> 00:31:56.780
Open the conversation.
00:31:57.180 --> 00:32:00.540
Some days your prayer may last 30 minutes.
00:32:03.340 --> 00:32:06.060
Some days it may last 30 seconds.
00:32:07.660 --> 00:32:10.620
Both can be beautiful if they are genuine.
00:32:12.140 --> 00:32:16.700
Prayer's not about saying the perfect thing, it's about spending time with the perfect Savior.
00:32:18.220 --> 00:32:21.820
So this week, I want to challenge you.
00:32:22.940 --> 00:32:30.380
I want you to open Matthew chapter six and read one line of the Lord's Prayer.
00:32:32.700 --> 00:32:38.540
Then I want you to pause and I want you to talk to God about that one line.
00:32:40.700 --> 00:32:42.620
And maybe that's all you pray that day.
00:32:44.220 --> 00:32:49.740
Maybe that's where your relationship with Him begins to grow in a way it never has before.
00:32:50.060 --> 00:32:54.620
Because at the end of the day, prayer is not a performance.
00:32:56.060 --> 00:33:02.540
It's a conversation with a God who already knows your name, but he still wants to hear your voice.
00:33:07.180 --> 00:33:13.420
Guys, as usual, thank you so much for listening to my podcast, Bible Basically.
00:33:15.500 --> 00:33:21.340
If this episode encouraged you, I want you to share it with someone who's ever thought, I don't know how to pray.
00:33:21.740 --> 00:33:28.380
Sometimes the most freeing truth is realizing that Jesus already answered that question.
00:33:29.980 --> 00:33:36.220
Till next time, let's keep figuring out faith together.
