00:00:05.919 --> 00:00:14.880
Welcome to Beyond the Spire, a podcast of the Save Our Secretsons project here in Preston at the Catholic Shrine of St.
00:00:15.039 --> 00:00:18.160
Wahl, supported by the National Lottery.
00:00:18.719 --> 00:00:22.480
In each episode, we go beyond what you see from the street.
00:00:22.800 --> 00:00:34.479
We explore the story and the sound of Gregory and chant the Church's own voice, so that this treasure of faith and culture is not just preserved, but lived and loved again.
00:00:34.719 --> 00:00:36.320
I am Canon Bunens.
00:00:36.640 --> 00:00:44.960
Whether you are a musician, a member of a parish choir, or simply someone curious about the Catholic faith heritage, you came to the right place.
00:00:45.679 --> 00:00:46.880
Let's begin.
00:00:47.280 --> 00:01:04.480
In the last episode we talked about the restoration of Gregory and Shint, and with such a restoration driven by the monks of Salem, we should have plenty of initiatives, plenty of Gregorian choirs.
00:01:04.719 --> 00:01:06.319
But what's happening today?
00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:08.799
Today Gregory and Shint vanished.
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:15.599
Today Gregorian has not the place we can think he should have.
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:25.519
So the Church acknowledges Gregory and Chant as especially suited to the Roman liturgy.
00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:37.519
Gregory is confirmed as the proper music of the Roman rite and ordered that it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:51.359
In practice, in the seventeenth and eighties, chant had almost disappeared from ordinary parish life, replaced by vernacular and popular styles.
00:01:53.599 --> 00:01:54.239
Why?
00:01:55.280 --> 00:02:16.800
It was perceived as an old fashioned and incompatible with a desire of emotionally driven music that reflected personal feelings more than the regularity and equanimity required by the liturgy.
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:38.240
Combined with the cultural upheaval, a drive for constant innovation and maybe institutional negligence, this led to a near total rupture with the received musical tradition.
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:56.319
With the loss of chant, parishes lost a central dimension of their prayer, the singing of the liturgical texts themselves in the form that are organically grown with the Roman rite.
00:02:56.639 --> 00:03:22.719
This broke its audible continuity with the church's monastic and parish past, but there are still signs of recovery and maybe real obstacles, but there is now a real visible renewed interest in the traditional Latin Mass, new chant communities, and explicit encouragement from Rome.
00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:35.599
Pope Benedict XV asked that Gregorian chant be suitably esteemed and employed as the chant proper to the Roman liturgy in Sacramentum Caritatis.
00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:40.319
But challenges remained.
00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:54.000
A few trained musicians, hence the importance of listening to good recordings and where possible, learning in monasteries but chant is still part of the daily life of the monks.
00:03:55.439 --> 00:04:13.120
Another thing is scepticism about old ways, and so here as usual by the church with humility before a treasure we did not create, and we just received.
00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:15.840
Maybe this is what is missing.
00:04:16.160 --> 00:04:33.360
We need to care about what have been left and follow the steps of the ancient generations that crafted during years and decades and centuries of Gregor and Chant practice.
00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:46.480
This is a huge treasure we have not created, but we can just humbly receive and try to give back to the new generations.
00:04:46.959 --> 00:04:51.279
And finally comes the lack of resources.
00:04:52.160 --> 00:05:04.879
But nowadays with modern technologies and digital resources, we can't afford a huge repertoire of Gregory and chant pieces.
00:05:05.199 --> 00:05:15.600
Monasteries like Solem released new editions of Gregorian books, and new chant book editions are coming.
00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:26.319
At the end, what comes first is practice, and concretely means exist more recordings and workshops.
00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:49.279
For in for instance, the Schola Saint Gregoire at Monijon founded by Don Gajar himself, still offers solid formation rooted in prayer, and there are local initiatives and religious communities showing how chant and interior life grow together.
00:05:52.240 --> 00:06:01.360
For the parishes, a realistic model is to imitate the structure of the monastery at the parish level.
00:06:01.839 --> 00:06:05.920
A few capable singers handle the more difficult propers.
00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:41.839
A constituted scholar gathers those willing to commit themselves and practice on the common chant, the common pieces, beginning by one or two propers, and then trying to involve the congregation for the most common parts, the ordinary, the curiale, the answers to the celebrant singing during the Mass.
