ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Between the Lane lines: Purpose, Process, and the Olympic Mindset with Brendan Hansen
What does it take to become the fastest human on the planet and maintain that edge for over a decade? In this special episode, hosts Dylan and Ryan switch from the gridiron to the pool to sit down with six-time Olympic medalist and former world record holder Brendan Hansen. Brendan takes us deep into the high-pressure world of elite swimming, reflecting on his unforgettable relay gold with Michael Phelps in Beijing, breaking world records 11 times, and the historic bronze medal he won out of lane eight in London after coming out of retirement.
But this isn't just a conversation about winning gold. Brendan shares the invaluable mental frameworks passed down by his legendary University of Texas coach, Eddie Reese, explaining why athletes must choose a purpose-driven identity over external performance metrics. He also reveals the staggering daily routine of an Olympian—including a grueling 6,000-calorie diet and core workouts that simulate literal torture—and delivers a hilarious, first-hand account of the time he accidentally lost his Olympic gold medal on a domestic flight home. Now serving as the Director of the National Junior Team for USA Swimming, Brendan lays out his blueprint for mentoring the next generation for LA 2028 and shares powerful, actionable life advice on values, accountability, and remaining obsessed with learning. Whether you are an aspiring athlete or looking to conquer your own daily "world records," Brendan’s mindset will redefine how you view failure and success.
