ABOUT THIS EPISODE
It does not happen all at once. There is no single moment where you cross a line and suddenly become who you are. It happens quietly. In the groceries you choose without thinking twice. The routines you have built that belong entirely to you. The traditions you kept from how you were raised and the ones you quietly let go. In this episode we talk about those small unannounced moments of adulthood where you realize you have started doing things your own way, not because someone told you to but because somewhere along the way you figured out what actually works for you. This is a conversation about the gentle and often unnoticed process of growing into yourself one small decision at a time.
🎧 If you have ever caught yourself doing something differently than how you were raised and felt something shift, this one is for you. Come listen.

00:00:06.980 --> 00:00:11.140
Hey friends, welcome to another episode of Becoming with Ket Me.
00:00:11.460 --> 00:00:14.740
Now, this week, I was reflecting on something.
00:00:14.980 --> 00:00:23.379
I want to know have you ever realized that you're becoming into your own person at the most random places?
00:00:23.620 --> 00:00:29.620
Because I thought becoming your own person would feel like this major life event.
00:00:30.019 --> 00:00:34.179
Instead, for me, that realization, it happened at the grocery store.
00:00:34.340 --> 00:00:35.620
Now hear me out.
00:00:35.939 --> 00:00:43.780
When I first started grocering shopping for myself when I moved out, I would go to places that were familiar.
00:00:43.939 --> 00:00:58.900
I would buy items that I was familiar with, items that my family bought when I used to live with them, or items that I noticed that was used often in my grandparents' home.
00:00:59.140 --> 00:01:02.260
I would also shop at familiar places.
00:01:02.820 --> 00:01:09.299
So it would be instinctual for me to shop at grocery stores that my family would shop at.
00:01:09.459 --> 00:01:15.299
And there came a point where I realized that I was repeating what I observed growing up.
00:01:15.540 --> 00:01:22.980
And I was choosing what was familiar rather than being consciously intentional about it.
00:01:23.219 --> 00:01:27.700
And because of that, I wasn't really making my own choices.
00:01:27.939 --> 00:01:31.939
Instead, I was making the choices that I inherited.
00:01:32.100 --> 00:01:36.740
But over time, I noticed that something started to shift.
00:01:36.980 --> 00:01:39.460
Something started changing.
00:01:39.859 --> 00:01:46.180
I started to read labels and of the items.
00:01:46.500 --> 00:01:52.020
I never used to look at ingredients, and now I do.
00:01:52.340 --> 00:01:53.780
That's my go-to.
00:01:54.340 --> 00:01:56.500
I compare products now.
00:01:56.740 --> 00:02:08.740
And I feel like I've evolved from just doing what was normal, what was the standard in my home growing up, versus being more intentional.
00:02:09.139 --> 00:02:18.019
I did more research in terms of what type of ingredients am I okay with?
00:02:18.419 --> 00:02:23.780
What type of store do I prefer to shop at?
00:02:24.340 --> 00:02:30.819
What quality of foods am I interested in buying?
00:02:31.060 --> 00:02:35.060
And I started thinking about what works for me, what I like.
00:02:35.219 --> 00:02:41.539
Not because what my family did was wrong, but being more in tune with my personal preferences.
00:02:41.780 --> 00:02:59.939
That's just one example, but I realized that the older I'm getting, the more that I'm choosing things because I actually like them, because I'm intentional about them, rather than falling into the pattern of familiarity that you grew up with or that I grew up with.
00:03:00.099 --> 00:03:06.019
And I want you to realize that this is more than just grocery shopping and grocery stores.
00:03:06.179 --> 00:03:08.659
That's just an example.
00:03:09.060 --> 00:03:16.819
And when I was thinking about this topic, other examples could be decorating your home.
00:03:16.979 --> 00:03:21.859
You're learning your own aesthetic outside of what you grew up with.
00:03:22.340 --> 00:03:26.739
Another example could be how you manage your money.
00:03:26.979 --> 00:03:30.019
Everyone has different preferences.
00:03:30.739 --> 00:03:42.099
And you becoming your own person, you get to dictate that, be more intentional about that, then defaulting to what you've observed.
00:03:42.340 --> 00:03:51.139
Other examples, you start creating routines, celebrating certain holidays a specific way, creating your own traditions.
00:03:51.299 --> 00:04:02.019
And little by little, you stop living someone else's blueprint and start creating your own definition of things.
00:04:02.259 --> 00:04:06.659
And by doing that, you ultimately start creating your own blueprint.
00:04:07.060 --> 00:04:12.259
That being said, it that doesn't mean that everything that you're familiar with has to change.
00:04:12.500 --> 00:04:19.540
If you happen to agree with it and you happen to like it, great, that's completely fine.
00:04:19.860 --> 00:04:27.620
But I think what I'm talking about here is more of that intentionality, that conscious awareness of am I getting this?
00:04:27.860 --> 00:04:35.140
Am I doing certain things because I truly want to, because I like it, or because this is what I'm used to.
00:04:35.300 --> 00:04:40.580
This is the way things have always been done in my family, or what I've observed growing up.
00:04:40.740 --> 00:04:45.379
When we were younger, we didn't have to think a lot about our choices.
00:04:45.780 --> 00:04:48.340
Food we grow up with is chosen for us.
00:04:48.580 --> 00:04:52.340
Our routine is essentially created for us as well.
00:04:52.660 --> 00:04:59.140
Traditions are essentially established and we just follow suit.
00:04:59.460 --> 00:05:09.780
Then adulthood arrives, and one of the biggest shifts in adulthood is realizing that someone else is no longer making the decision for you.
00:05:10.020 --> 00:05:14.980
And I think there's another emotional side of this too that I don't think we talk about enough.
00:05:15.220 --> 00:05:24.660
Wondering if you're abandoning traditions or their values and certain things, which there could be, and others there might not be.
00:05:24.900 --> 00:05:29.540
I think you need to take it and evaluate it on a case-by-case thing.
00:05:29.700 --> 00:05:41.140
And you can still appreciate where you came from and how you grew up while you evolve into your own life, into your own purpose.
00:05:41.460 --> 00:05:48.819
Because becoming your own person, it doesn't require rejecting where you came from.
00:05:48.980 --> 00:06:00.340
And maybe that's what growing up really is: keeping some things and changing some things, questioning old assumptions, and creating your own version of adulthood.
00:06:00.580 --> 00:06:06.100
You can honor your upbringing without a hundred percent copying it.
00:06:06.259 --> 00:06:10.660
You see, growth isn't always about becoming someone totally new.
00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:17.140
Sometimes it's discovering and realizing what was always uniquely yours.
00:06:17.460 --> 00:06:20.900
Maybe this is another quiet part of becoming in general.
00:06:21.060 --> 00:06:24.980
You see, identity forms through these small decisions.
00:06:25.379 --> 00:06:29.460
Adulthood is built through discovery, repetition, growth.
00:06:29.620 --> 00:06:34.340
Who we become shows up in these small everyday decisions.
00:06:34.500 --> 00:06:42.100
And oftentimes the person you're becoming is revealed through the choices that nobody else notices.
00:06:42.500 --> 00:06:45.780
So, with that being said, here's your reflection for this week.
00:06:46.020 --> 00:06:50.259
What's something you do differently than your parents or your guardians?
00:06:50.420 --> 00:06:54.100
What's a preference that you developed that surprise you?
00:06:54.340 --> 00:07:02.900
And when did you first realize that you were making choices based off what you wanted rather than just familiarity?
00:07:03.140 --> 00:07:08.580
So maybe becoming your own person isn't one big breakthrough moment.
00:07:08.900 --> 00:07:18.980
Maybe it's a hundred of different small decisions that slowly start looking more and more like you.
00:07:19.300 --> 00:07:31.460
And you see, one day you'll look around at the life you've built and realize that it's no longer just what you inherited, but instead it's what you've chosen.
