ABOUT THIS EPISODE
There is a moment in adulthood where it hits you. You come home after a long day, look around at everything that needs to be done, and suddenly you understand. The tiredness your parents carried that you mistook for distance. The stress behind decisions that seemed unfair at the time. The way they kept showing up even when they were running on empty. In this episode we talk about that full circle moment of growing up and finally seeing the people who raised you as human beings, not just as parents. The sacrifices that were invisible to you as a child, the pressure they never put into words, and what it means to hold both your childhood experience and your adult understanding at the same time. This is one of the quietest and most profound shifts that adulthood brings and almost nobody talks about it.
🎧 If you have ever caught yourself thinking I finally get it now, this one was made for you. Come listen.

00:00:07.300 --> 00:00:11.300
Hey friends, welcome back to another episode of Becoming with Kethney.
00:00:11.300 --> 00:00:19.300
Now, today I'd like to talk about how as a child I never quite understood the adult figures in my life.
00:00:19.300 --> 00:00:28.820
And I feel like now, as I'm getting older, I feel like I could understand parents and my parents more.
00:00:28.820 --> 00:00:34.900
Have you ever had a moment where you finally understood something that your parents used to tell you?
00:00:34.900 --> 00:00:36.340
Yeah.
00:00:36.340 --> 00:00:41.620
Well, I was reflecting this week and that happened to me.
00:00:41.620 --> 00:00:45.140
I was like, wow, I finally get it.
00:00:45.140 --> 00:00:49.700
You see, when you're younger, your parents just feel like parents.
00:00:49.700 --> 00:00:55.459
You don't think about their stress, their exhaustion, it feels invisible to you.
00:00:55.459 --> 00:00:58.420
You mostly just see what directly affects you.
00:00:58.420 --> 00:01:09.939
You see, because as kids, we see the adults in our lives and experience them through what they do for us, but not exactly through what they carry themselves.
00:01:09.939 --> 00:01:16.340
And there were so many things that they used to say to me that I just didn't understand at the time.
00:01:16.340 --> 00:01:18.260
Enjoy your childhood.
00:01:18.260 --> 00:01:20.579
Adulthood is different.
00:01:20.579 --> 00:01:23.939
When you're younger, adulthood feels like freedom.
00:01:23.939 --> 00:01:30.579
You don't realize how much responsibility comes with it because you don't understand responsibility yet.
00:01:30.579 --> 00:01:34.340
And now that I'm older, I finally get it.
00:01:34.340 --> 00:01:44.100
I understand how exhausting responsibilities can be after an already long day working.
00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:52.900
When you come home or you log off online from the day, you still need to cook and maintain your home.
00:01:52.900 --> 00:01:57.780
And you realize that adults they rarely fully clock out.
00:01:57.780 --> 00:02:05.219
And I think the biggest shift is realizing that my parents and your parents, they were people.
00:02:05.219 --> 00:02:09.620
They were people before they were ever your parents.
00:02:09.620 --> 00:02:15.699
And they were continued to be people and a person while they were parenting you.
00:02:15.699 --> 00:02:22.179
Your parents, they had emotions, they had fears, responsibilities, dreams.
00:02:22.179 --> 00:02:25.699
They were figuring life out too.
00:02:25.699 --> 00:02:26.979
And you know what?
00:02:26.979 --> 00:02:32.099
It's okay that they didn't magically have everything together.
00:02:32.099 --> 00:02:38.340
As they were raising us, they were carrying entire lives we couldn't see.
00:02:38.340 --> 00:02:47.299
And I think growing up changes the way you appreciate people and you appreciate your parents.
00:02:47.299 --> 00:02:56.179
You now appreciate the effort they put into your life more because you understand that sacrifice is differently.
00:02:56.179 --> 00:02:59.939
Now that you're an adult, you can relate.
00:02:59.939 --> 00:03:07.939
Whether or not you even have children yet, you are beginning to understand what it means to be an adult.
00:03:07.939 --> 00:03:19.459
And so you appreciate the fact that they were balancing that, living their own lives, trying to find their identity, going after their dreams while raising you.
00:03:19.459 --> 00:03:22.179
And the sacrifice of their time.
00:03:22.179 --> 00:03:28.899
And I say it's a sacrifice because it's a lot. You get tired.
00:03:28.899 --> 00:03:33.619
There's times where I just want to check out after a long day.
00:03:33.619 --> 00:03:35.219
Literally don't do anything.
00:03:35.219 --> 00:03:36.340
I'm not feeling hungry.
00:03:36.340 --> 00:03:41.299
I'm just gonna snack and chill, watch TV, or just go to bed.
00:03:41.299 --> 00:03:50.179
And there's so many times that I think about, oh my gosh, imagine if I couldn't do that because I had a child.
00:03:50.179 --> 00:03:51.859
Now I'm exhausted.
00:03:51.859 --> 00:03:59.699
I just want to check out, but shoot, I can't because I have a responsibility outside of myself.
00:03:59.699 --> 00:04:03.539
And I love that responsibility.
00:04:03.539 --> 00:04:11.459
But now I have to be mentally strong to overcome what I'm feeling in order to meet their need.
00:04:11.459 --> 00:04:13.379
And they're gonna be hungry.
00:04:13.379 --> 00:04:18.100
So I better figure something else out for dinner.
00:04:18.100 --> 00:04:20.100
That's just an example.
00:04:20.100 --> 00:04:27.620
And I feel like as we grow older, we see these positive adult figures in a fuller way.
00:04:27.620 --> 00:04:41.620
Because sometimes this moment of appreciation, it only comes over time when you're able to relate and you're able to understand what it took for them to be there in your life in that way.
00:04:41.620 --> 00:04:45.379
And maybe this is one of the quietest parts of becoming.
00:04:45.379 --> 00:04:54.819
You see, growth changes you, it changes your perspective and you start understanding things you once overlooked.
00:04:54.819 --> 00:05:00.819
And in your own way, you start becoming the adult that you once only observed.
00:05:00.819 --> 00:05:13.620
So I'm curious, what's something your parents or adult figure in your life when you were a child used to say to you that you're now starting to understand?
00:05:13.620 --> 00:05:22.900
And have you had a moment where you finally understand the adults that were in your life when you were a child?
00:05:22.900 --> 00:05:25.220
Do you understand them differently now?
00:05:25.220 --> 00:05:30.420
If you've been feeling this lately, I feel like this realization just comes with growth.
00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:36.740
It's just part of growing older and it's natural that your perspective changes with your experience.
00:05:36.740 --> 00:05:42.020
Sometimes becoming isn't just learning more about yourself.
00:05:42.020 --> 00:05:46.740
It's finally understanding the people that came before you.
00:05:46.740 --> 00:05:56.259

Bye.
