Jessica starts out telling us about her sci fi romance series Cosmic Cupid. It follows a group of siblings discovering love in a futuristic world. She tells us about the evolution of the first book in the series from a contemporary romance to a sci fi romance. And how after multiple drafts it was an author friend who helped her figure out she needed to put the sci fi twist on it.
She tells us about how she moved from writing YA Fantasy to steamy romance and how her spice level has evolved since her first romance book. We also get into the ways characters, plot, and tropes can influence the spice levels in books.
Jessica also shares how her culture has influenced her writing even in a futuristic setting. She strives to make her characters relatable and one of the ways she does this is tapping into her own lived experience and cultural expectations. As well as dealing with heavier issues like grief.
We talk about Jessica’s first book event Word on the Street in Toronto. And she shares some advice she took away as an author attending her first events. Nikki is looking forward to meeting her in person at a live event since they’re both in Ontario. And they discuss how small and supportive the local author world and the romance author community in general can be.
Jessica’s trope for life is fantasy. Fantasy books have her heart and were the genre that really got her into reading in the first place so she’ll always have a special spot in her heart for it.
