00:00:04.559 --> 00:00:14.000
When you get an autism diagnosis, I feel many times it hits you so hard and you kind of don't realize where you need to go.
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:16.640
And I felt the same exact way.
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:22.719
When my son was diagnosed with autism, I really felt like I was drowning.
00:00:22.879 --> 00:00:25.440
I felt like I didn't have the support that I needed.
00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:31.280
If autism is truly genetic, how come we can't figure out which genes are causing autism?
00:00:31.600 --> 00:00:45.039
Research has shown that about 37% of children who were once diagnosed with autism under the age of three no longer meet the diagnosis when they get to the ages of five to seven years of age.
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:46.880
That's a pretty big jump.
00:00:47.119 --> 00:00:49.039
So what happened.
00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:14.239
So as I said, I'm an autism mom.
00:01:14.319 --> 00:01:18.319
I have a 12-year-old boy, um, and I'm also a practitioner.
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:24.799
I've been a registered dietitian for nearly 20 years now, and autism was not a part of our plan.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:28.319
And I'm sure a lot of you feel the exact same way.
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:38.560
When you become a mom, there are so many emotions and so many things that are going on in your body and your brain and all the expectations you have of your child.
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:48.159
And when you get an autism diagnosis, I feel many times it hits you so hard and you kind of don't realize where you need to go.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:50.799
And I felt the same exact way.
00:01:50.959 --> 00:01:56.879
When my son was diagnosed with autism, I really felt like I was drowning.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.840
I felt like I didn't have the support that I needed.
00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:09.680
And as much as everyone in our journey was so amazing and helped us tremendously and helped my son, I felt like I still was looking for more.
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:12.639
I felt as a parent I should be doing more.
00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:23.280
And that's how I started really diving and understanding that there was an entire different world out there to help children with autism that nobody ever explained to me.
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:30.240
And I thought as a practitioner for nearly 10 years at that point, how come nobody told me about this?
00:02:30.479 --> 00:02:39.039
How come nobody explained to me that there were other labs or nutrition and supplements that could be helping my child to thrive?
00:02:39.280 --> 00:02:48.879
And that was something that I thought was a great disservice, not only to me as an autism mom, but also as a practitioner that I was never taught this.
00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:56.159
So what I started doing was understanding that there was more research out there than I expected.
00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:13.439
And I have to say thank you to all the moms who came before me and created Facebook groups and Instagrams and who were really trying to get the word and the message out over 10 years ago when social media was just starting.
00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:23.120
These moms were sharing labs and supplements and tips that I didn't even realize were an option for us.
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:35.520
So I want to first say thank you to all those moms and practitioners who have been doing this for so long and really trying to help and get the word out and support our families as we evolve.
00:03:35.680 --> 00:03:45.520
And as someone who's worked in research for nearly 15, 20 years of my life, it's one of those things that I'm very passionate about today.
00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:52.879
And that brings me to one of the first things of explaining is how the research has been evolving.
00:03:53.199 --> 00:03:56.960
We look at autism as only a genetic disorder.
00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:02.319
And unfortunately, we can't really say that anymore because research has evolved.
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:06.960
We've learned more about the brain in the last 10 years than ever before.
00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:17.040
So while we understand that there could be a genetic component, I'm sure many of you, just like me, went to a geneticist, maybe did some gene mapping.
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:22.319
And unfortunately, when we got the results, everything was what they would consider normal.
00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:24.800
There were no genetic abnormalities.
00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:30.480
And so we're left scratching our heads as parents of how did we still get here?
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:36.480
If autism is truly genetic, how come we can't figure out which genes are causing autism?
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:40.319
And yes, we do have genetic variants that we have identified.
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:45.600
I do work with many families who have had a positive genetic abnormality.
00:04:45.680 --> 00:04:58.160
And I'm not saying that that's not always the case, but for our case and for many of my patients, it was one of those things that made me question and wonder what else is going on.
00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:10.160
Diving more into the research, I realized that there is so much more than what we've been told or what we've had somebody explain to us.
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:20.800
And so that's one of the things where if we're looking at autism and no two kids are the same, and autism is a spectrum, we shouldn't be treating every child the same.
00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:34.240
So if we're just doing the same therapies, speech therapy, occupational therapy, maybe ABA, it might not be really helping every single kid the way we hoped because every single kid is completely different on the spectrum.
00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:44.319
So looking at research and understanding the human body, one of the best things that I did was I actually left healthcare and I started working for functional lab companies.
00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:55.199
I started diving into looking at research and labs and lab values and understanding how the person's human body was actually functioning.
00:05:55.360 --> 00:06:08.480
And that's where a lot of the research kind of always questions or leads to more research is needed, or this can't be conclusive enough because what works for one might not work for another.
00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:23.439
These tests and a person's body is not like working with somebody who has elevated cholesterol or elevated blood pressure, and we can see how interventions can move down labs or decrease blood pressure.
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:30.879
Autism is a behavioral assessment and understanding how that perfect person's brain works and how they respond to things.
00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:39.759
So I think what the most important thing is understanding your child at a biochemical level and just saying, what is going on inside your body?
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:41.519
How is your nutrition?
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:43.759
What specific diet do you need?
00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:46.079
What specific supplement do you need?
00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:51.759
How do we support your body so your body can go off and continue to thrive?
00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:58.720
When I started working with my son, it was something that I didn't expect to really see happen.
00:06:58.879 --> 00:07:07.120
And within the first few weeks of working on his gut and helping to support his body, it was like I opened a floodgate.
00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:15.920
And I know I've seen this with many of my families too, where it's once you start rebalancing the system, it starts to work.
00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:36.240
If we are looking at autism, what we know with autism is so many, up to 80 to 90 percent, could have selective eating issues, uh, they could have sensory issues when it comes to feeding, they could have GI issues too, that could be impacting so many things, not only behavior, but also their appetite and how they take in food.
00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:51.040
So if we're looking at that as a possibility of if we're restricting their nutrition or they are restricting nutrition, but not by choice, how does that impact their body, their brain, and their entire system?
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:55.040
Now, biomedical is not a one size fits all.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:08:04.720
And I really always try to advocate to make sure that my families are aware that just because one thing worked for one child doesn't mean it's gonna work for another.
00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:10.800
And I've been in those shoes too with certain things of why didn't this work for my child?
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:16.639
Because my child was similar to that person's child, but they didn't, I didn't see the same results that they did.
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:21.600
And it really comes down to the biochemical differences for every single child.
00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:31.759
So when we're looking at nutrition and the gut and diets, we want to be mindful and meaningful when we're doing nutrition and interventions.
00:08:31.920 --> 00:08:37.600
There are a lot of restrictive diets out there, and we want to make sure that the child has better nutrition.
00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:46.399
If your child, if we're trying to do a gluten and dairy-free diet, but your child then withers down to only eating three things, that's not helpful at all.
00:08:46.559 --> 00:09:03.759
And I understand the concept of, you know, saying, well, we know gluten and dairy-free could really help a child, but if we're getting to the point where that child isn't eating anymore, we need to revisit the situation and say, okay, maybe we don't start there, maybe we start someplace else.
00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:09.440
And I have a son with RFID, and which is avoidant restrictive feeding intake disorder.
00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:15.840
And we have done a lot of feeding therapy over the years with different specialists and programs.
00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:19.600
We are on a gluten-free diet, but it took us time to get there.
00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:22.240
And I didn't push and I didn't rush it.
00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:45.120
I made sure that we maintained nutrition throughout the entire process, which is why working with somebody who's a licensed practitioner in this area is really beneficial and helpful for so many families so that we can help guide you and I help you identify the gaps that we need to provide so that your child stays in their optimal nutritional intake.
00:09:45.440 --> 00:09:51.440
So just because something, you know, works for everybody doesn't mean it's gonna always work for your child.
00:09:51.519 --> 00:09:53.440
And that's perfectly okay.
00:09:53.679 --> 00:09:59.919
There's so many diets out there, there's over 20 different types of therapeutic diets for kids with autism.
00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:07.600
So that's why parents can get so confused and overwhelmed when it comes to picking the right diet for their child.
00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:11.440
And sometimes the testing honestly truly helps.
00:10:11.679 --> 00:10:16.799
But I also always feel that my families should feel with their gut instinct.
00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:21.279
That gut instinct that you have as a parent will never steer you wrong.
00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:32.799
So if there's something that's pulling at you saying that there's something that you should try, maybe that is something you should try because you know your child better than anyone and you're so in tune with your child.
00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:41.519
So, and I've I've felt that the entire time I've worked with my son, that I've always had that inkling and feeling when something just felt right to do.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:47.440
And one of the first things for us was I always thought gluten was a real big issue for my son.
00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:50.639
And once I started doing testing, I was right.
00:10:50.799 --> 00:10:58.080
Even though all the practitioners told all the specialists told me that he was fine, I knew something was wrong.
00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:05.039
And the further tests that I did, I realized gluten not only was really hurting his stomach, but it was really hurting his brain.
00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:11.120
And when we removed gluten, it was an it was night and day for him on so many different levels.
00:11:11.360 --> 00:11:25.519
So take what I'm saying as there are things that we could do to help your child, especially in nutrition, but it doesn't have to be an overnight success, or it doesn't have to be an overnight get rid of everything and start again.
00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:30.480
We can make meaningful changes and get to a goal if we work together.
00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:44.080
Now, that also leads me into nutrition and supplements because natural doesn't always mean that it's safe or that it's not going to potentially harm or cause issues with your child.
00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:56.320
And with social media today, there is so much information that's out there, and every mom has a testimonial and a story and maybe a product that really moved the needle for them, which I think is amazing.
00:11:56.480 --> 00:11:59.519
And I always say that products have a time and a place.
00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:08.799
But one thing we have to understand is a child's body is not like an adult body, especially their microbiome, their brain, and how they are developing.
00:12:09.039 --> 00:12:15.840
So we can't recommend or use all supplements to do the same thing for an adult that we do for a child.
00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:24.559
And that's something that we have to understand that supplements really do help bridge the gap and they have a time and a place.
00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:26.720
And this is where testing comes in.
00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:31.279
How do we know what supplements to put a child on or what to recommend?
00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:33.360
Is usually we're doing testing.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:47.120
And we could do testing with your pediatrician or your neurologist, and we can also do functional lab tests that also give us guidance and clues on to what's gonna work best for your child.
00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:55.200
And what we're wanting to do is bridge the gap and eventually have the diet take over and not have to supplement forever.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:58.000
But sometimes our kiddos need supplements.
00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:06.240
The analogy I typically use for kids with autism is unfortunately, sometimes their body, picture it like a car in a ditch.
00:13:06.480 --> 00:13:15.840
If you drive off the road and in a ditch, you as a one person aren't going to be able to push that car out onto the road to let it take off again.
00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:24.159
Sometimes we need a tow truck, sometimes we need extra support to help get the car back on the road so you can continue your drive and your journey.
00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:30.000
And that's exactly how the nutrition and the supplement world works for your child as well.
00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:38.240
There shouldn't be any red, there shouldn't be any guarantees or, you know, say that this product can do this or that.
00:13:38.399 --> 00:13:41.360
There's a lot of red flags in this community.
00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:48.320
And that's one thing that I try to really advocate against is making bold claims and statements.
00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:58.080
If we're looking at autism as behavior, and that is how we assess and diagnose children on the spectrum, is it is a behavioral assessment.
00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:05.120
They're checking a box of things that they're doing or not doing, but we're not looking at the root cause.
00:14:05.200 --> 00:14:08.399
And for every child, it can be gravely different.
00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:16.399
So if we're looking at autism as just behavior, we can see how some kids can improve dramatically.
00:14:16.639 --> 00:14:31.200
Believe it or not, research has shown that about 37% of children who were once diagnosed with autism under the age of three no longer meet the diagnosis when they get to the ages of five to seven years of age.
00:14:31.440 --> 00:14:33.039
That's a pretty big jump.
00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:43.840
So, what happened if we had children meeting the autism criteria early on, and now several years later, they no longer meet those criteria.
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:51.360
Or did they meet the behavioral criteria, but it was related to something completely different?
00:14:51.600 --> 00:15:00.080
Maybe a nutritional deficiency, maybe a gut microbiome imbalance, maybe some toxins in their system that were impacting their brain.
00:15:00.320 --> 00:15:05.279
There can be a lot of different variations to autism and what causes autism.
00:15:05.440 --> 00:15:13.120
And that's why it's important to understand where your child is at, not only just physically, but also biochemically.
00:15:13.279 --> 00:15:17.519
No different than when you go for a physical every single year.
00:15:17.759 --> 00:15:33.440
Unfortunately, many pediatricians are not running specific labs that are more autism-based because we don't have that knowledge in healthcare yet for providers to understand where to go and what type of tests to run.
00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:40.240
I've created many free guides, which is something that I am passionate about and I love on top of publishing research.
00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:49.120
So if you ever go to my website, biomedicalhealingforkids.com, you can get one of the 11 free ebooks that I have.
00:15:49.200 --> 00:15:52.559
And one of the free ebooks I have is my microbiome workbook.
00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:54.159
I love making free guides.
00:15:54.320 --> 00:16:00.879
That's one of my favorite things to do in the entire world is create free content, but also creating research for my families.
00:16:01.039 --> 00:16:04.720
So if you go to my website, you can grab one of my 11 free ebooks.
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:11.200
And one that I particularly am going to suggest is my autism and ADHD biomedical workbook.
00:16:11.440 --> 00:16:31.440
And in that workbook, I have lists of labs that your pediatrician can run that is covered by insurance that can give us clues and identify what's going on inside your child that go beyond just the regular cookie cutter, blood CMP, BMP, basic blood work your pediatrician would run every year as a physical.
00:16:31.840 --> 00:16:41.360
I also have in that ebook other functional lab tests that you can run too, and what which ones are my favorite and what we're looking for in terms of that.
00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:45.039
But I also kind of help my parents start off the process.
00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:46.879
What test should you look for first?
00:16:47.039 --> 00:16:52.240
What should you look for, what should we be identifying first and what should we be focusing on?
00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:53.600
This world is huge.
00:16:53.759 --> 00:16:59.279
The biomedical world is continuing to grow every single year, which is absolutely amazing.
00:16:59.360 --> 00:17:04.880
And I absolutely love that we're growing and research is evolving and we're learning so much more.
00:17:05.119 --> 00:17:26.960
But what we have to understand is that in the medical world, working with mainstream doctors, they are still very much behind when it comes to the functional side or the other types of research that are in working with kids with autism and ADHD, which is why I created these free guides for my parents so that they can really start understanding all the other research.
00:17:27.119 --> 00:17:39.119
I've had many parents gift and uh print out and give these things to their pediatricians, and it really helps make a difference once they are aware and understand that there's so much more that we can do for our children.
00:17:39.359 --> 00:17:46.160
And that's the biggest clue is that there are so many tests out there, which one is best for your child?
00:17:46.480 --> 00:18:07.599
So, what a practitioner is going to work with you on, especially in the biomedical world, is taking a history, understanding your child, running some functional lab tests and maybe some conventional lab tests, and then trying to understand what is going on inside your child so that we can create a perfect plan that works for both you and your child.
00:18:07.839 --> 00:18:09.519
We want children to be safe.
00:18:09.680 --> 00:18:11.359
We want children to thrive.
00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:23.119
And this is one of the biggest things that I can say has been a big blessing for not only my family, but thousands of families that I've worked with and thousands of practitioners that are helping kids every single day.
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:25.680
Autism isn't just genetic anymore.
00:18:25.839 --> 00:18:30.079
We can't use that and say that that's the only cause of autism.
00:18:30.319 --> 00:18:33.039
It's so much more complex than just that.
00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:40.640
And there's so many things that you could do to help your child if you take the time to just learn one little thing at a time.
00:18:40.880 --> 00:18:41.920
That's why I'm here.
00:18:42.079 --> 00:18:44.160
That's why a lot of practitioners are here.
00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:50.480
And we're trying to figure out how we can best help your child and continue to grow the biomedical world.
00:18:50.720 --> 00:18:59.759
As someone who has published research in this area, I can tell you I get overwhelmed with the amount of information that I find every single day.
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:13.759
I'm constantly reading and learning and trying to publish research so that not only I can help other practitioners, but other families and understand more about what's going on inside an autism body and a brain.
00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:18.160
Everyone is going to have one way of trying to work with your child.
00:19:18.319 --> 00:19:24.400
And one of the most important things is again, this is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
00:19:24.640 --> 00:19:31.119
We need to peel back the onion layer and figure out what is we're gonna work best for you and your child.
00:19:31.359 --> 00:19:39.200
Don't let anyone tell you that this isn't going to help or that you may not see improvements.
00:19:39.279 --> 00:19:41.359
And that is always a possibility.
00:19:41.519 --> 00:19:46.319
We may not see the meaningful improvements that you're hoping for.
00:19:46.559 --> 00:19:53.200
But I can honestly say my goal with working with families is never to cure or reverse autism.
00:19:53.440 --> 00:19:56.000
That's not what I stand for, and that's not what I do.
00:19:56.240 --> 00:20:00.400
My son is still diagnosed with autism, and that's perfectly fine.
00:20:00.720 --> 00:20:07.839
But my goal is always to make kids feel as happy and as healthy as they possibly can and however that looks for them.
00:20:08.079 --> 00:20:09.599
We want our kids to thrive.
00:20:09.759 --> 00:20:12.559
We want the best life that we can for our child.
00:20:12.720 --> 00:20:18.079
And I feel as a parent, we're always trying to uncover every stone and every rock.
00:20:18.240 --> 00:20:25.920
And in the biomedical world, there's a lot of rocks to overturn, but we're gonna be here to support you, and I'm gonna be here to support you.
00:20:26.160 --> 00:20:36.400

I try to post a lot of free content for my families so that they can start making decisions and figuring out how to best help their child in this amazing world that is very complex, but one of the most fulfilling things in the entire world, I can honestly say this world has meant a lot to me.
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:56.559
And I hope it can mean a lot to you and your family as well.
