Who?

Rep. Eli Crane — fmr. Navy SEAL; Homeland Security Committee

LISTEN: Laslo & Crane

Ask a Pol asks:

Last week, the House Homeland Security Committee heard testimony from FBI, DOJ and CBP officials who said their agencies don’t know — “we just don’t know, and that’s the concerning part,” an FBI official testified — what’s been flying over New Jersey and New York recently.

ICYMI — DHS Committee drone hearing Dec. 10, 2024

Is that testimony at odds with what White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby has been telling — “nothing that indicates a public safety risk” — the press corps and public alike this week?

Key Crane:

“Clearly, I don't think everything's fine based on what we're seeing, how concerned the American citizens are,” Rep. Eli Crane exclusively tells Ask a Pol.

Happy holidays!!!

Ignorance is far from bliss

From what FBI, DOJ and CBP testified, it seemed like they kind of had no idea what these drones are?

“Yeah,” Crane — a former Navy SEAL and Homeland Security Committee member — replies.

“It's so hard up here because you don't know whether they don't really know or if they're lying to us, which I feel like they do all the time,” Crane tells us.

TRANSCRIPT: Rep. Eli Crane

SCENE: Earlier this week, before Congress funded the government and bolted outta town, Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo ran into Rep. Eli Crane as he was walking across the Capitol grounds ahead of a House vote.

Matt Laslo: “Curious your thoughts, after that DHS hearing last week on the drones, from what they told you in that hearing to then hearing Kirby and them say, hey, everything's fine. It seemed like those two are at odds. No?”

Eli Crane: “Well, I think, clearly, I don't think everything's fine based on what we're seeing, how concerned the American citizens are.”

ML: “Yeah?”

EC: “And then, as we found out in that hearing, what we're spending to counter drone warfare, I don't think we're fine at all.”

ML: “And what do you — like, from what they testified it seemed like they kind of had no idea what it was.”

EC: “Yeah.”

ML: “And then to hear Kirby and them say, ‘there's no security threat,’ how do they know? There seems to be a disconnect between them.”

EC: “Well yeah. It's so hard up here because you don't know whether they don't really know or if they're lying to us, which I feel like they do all the time.”

ML: “Yeah?”

EC: “And they can get away with it, because they're never held accountable up here. So it'll be interesting to see what we learn in the weeks and months to come.”

ML: “Yeah?”

EC: “But I think it's very concerning.”

ML: “Yeah? I’ll be watchin. Preciate ya.”
