Join us as we connect with experts, share insights, and build community throughout our profession.
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:27.839
Welcome back to the APTA Nebraska podcast.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:33.600
I'm Brad Dexter, and I'm joined by Nick Weber again today for our esteemed president's update.
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:35.039
Nick, how are you doing?
00:00:35.439 --> 00:00:36.479
Doing great, Brad.
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:37.039
How are you?
00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:38.560
I'm doing pretty good too.
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:44.640
We've uh we've talked a little bit before we started recording here, but you know, the school year has started up.
00:00:44.799 --> 00:00:48.399
Um, so many of you listeners probably have your kids going back to school.
00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:51.359
Uh certainly we're both in the swing of uh teaching.
00:00:51.439 --> 00:00:53.600
Well, I'm in the swing of teaching again this fall.
00:00:53.759 --> 00:00:59.039
Nick is uh full like service mode, probably scholarship mode a little bit right now.
00:00:59.439 --> 00:01:00.479
Um, so yeah.
00:01:00.880 --> 00:01:01.840
That's the plan, yeah.
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:07.680
It's a little different for me this semester, but uh hoping to find my way into those things as well.
00:01:07.920 --> 00:01:09.840
I I think you'll do just fine.
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.879
But uh we we do have a little bit of like a learning theme, you know, with school starting up.
00:01:14.959 --> 00:01:20.480
We have a bit of a learning theme today and some of the uh the things that we wanted to talk about, right?
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:25.200
So um I know we have student conclave coming up this fall.
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:30.159
Do you want to talk a little bit more about student conclave and any other events attached to that?
00:01:30.719 --> 00:01:33.280
Yeah, so this is our annual event for the students.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:35.359
Uh it's Friday, October 23rd this year.
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:38.239
It's happening in Omaha on UNMC's campus.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:51.280
Uh, there's four great talks lined up, and uh we're excited to just offer the students content that they've requested, uh things that you know are a little bit outside of a curricular topic, but still very relevant to the profession.
00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:55.439
And um so really excited about that opportunity for them.
00:01:55.519 --> 00:01:58.560
We've we've had some good turnouts and hoping to continue to grow on that.
00:01:58.719 --> 00:02:08.240
Uh, but then to add on to that, uh our early professional group has uh scheduled a PT pub night after the event.
00:02:08.319 --> 00:02:16.479
So uh just an opportunity for a great evening, uh, opportunity after some learning to come out, have a good time, uh, socialize with peers.
00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:23.280
And then uh, you know, we're welcoming obviously clinicians to come out as well and uh meet this next generation of providers.
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:26.960
Uh sounds like it will be a good time.
00:02:27.120 --> 00:02:34.800
And so you are you are welcoming in other clinicians from the community to uh to also meet with students and young professionals, correct?
00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:36.000
Yeah, absolutely.
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:51.439
I think it's just a good opportunity and kind of a uh little less formal, you know, environment to just get to know people and uh maybe identify a future colleague or a future mentor or you know, whatever.
00:02:51.599 --> 00:02:53.439
Um, but just it's a fun event.
00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:57.759
And uh, like I said, we've had some good turnouts the last few years and hoping we could just continue to grow on this.
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:01.599
Do you want to talk about any of the speakers that are coming in at all?
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:14.479
Yeah, I know uh off the top of my head, there's uh gonna be a talk on pelvic floor, there's a talk on some like pro bono care in the like Native American um health space that that occurs in Omaha.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:21.840
So things like that, just you know, obviously professional topics, uh, but maybe things that don't get as much time in a traditional curriculum.
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:27.439
So uh the students will have an opportunity to identify uh two different talks that they can attend.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:33.280
And so we just encourage them to take a look at the list and uh pick out things that are uh of interest to them.
00:03:33.680 --> 00:03:34.479
Excellent.
00:03:34.719 --> 00:03:38.479
Uh so student conclave that's happening October 23rd.
00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:42.240
The pub night is following, just as reminders there.
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:45.520
Uh let's switch gears toward uh conference.
00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:58.479
So there's certainly we had a podcast a couple weeks ago talking with our education committee, Amber and Jen, and they were sharing a lot of the details for getting ready for conference and just some of the things that they're thinking about as well.
00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:05.439
But September is the month where uh abstracts are due, posters, presentations.
00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:07.360
Uh, do you want to share any more there?
00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:12.000
Yeah, I guess I just want to put out the last call here to uh uh get those turned in.
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:19.600
We hope to have a another really competitive group of uh presenters uh and posters, as you said.
00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:22.560
We hope to accept as many as we can this year.
00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:28.160
Um again, just we we've had some great conferences in the last few years with a variety of topics.
00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:33.839
We try to uh set it up so that we have learning opportunities for clinicians from all disciplines.
00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:42.639
And so uh again, just want to put the call out to all the great clinicians out there and and educators and just share your knowledge uh and give back to the state.
00:04:42.720 --> 00:04:46.800
So hopefully we'll have a good itinerary for this year's conference as well.
00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:48.240
Excellent.
00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:53.360
Uh, and that's uh September 13th is the deadline for uh for all those abstracts.
00:04:53.439 --> 00:04:57.120
So just a few days from now, like Nick said, last call, last call.
00:04:57.279 --> 00:05:02.240
Uh again, if I had some kind of like a bell or something, it's like you know, last lap of the race.
00:05:02.399 --> 00:05:06.240
I need to get one of those boards to actually make these sounds within the podcast.
00:05:06.319 --> 00:05:06.879
That would be fun.
00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:07.600
Oh gosh.
00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:11.680
I I don't know if I trust you with a soundboard and uh a variety of those things.
00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:13.680
Start pushing buttons, right?
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:15.920
Um, all right.
00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:18.399
PT flash action strategy.
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:36.240
Uh I know at least at UNMC, we have a couple students that are working on this and have uh sent information out to the what the rest of their colleagues and students here on campus, but can you share more about what the flash action strategy is, the purpose behind it, and then specifically this year, what's being focused on?
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:46.000
Yeah, so every day or every sorry, every year, APTA identifies um a topic that they feel is relevant to the students.
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:52.959
And it's essentially like a nationwide social media blitz where we're trying to put out an advocacy message.
00:05:53.040 --> 00:05:57.360
And so it's really that first opportunity for students to kind of step into the advocacy space.
00:05:57.439 --> 00:06:00.560
Uh so this year, as you said, I think it's September 23rd and 4th.
00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:09.199
And the topic that's been identified this year is around the PT workforce, um, specifically in rural and underserved areas.
00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:17.680
So there's uh some legislation that's been presented in both the House and the Senate called the Physical Therapy Workforce and Patient Access Act.
00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:30.319
And what this would do is allow physical therapists to join the list of providers on the National Health Service Corps, which is the uh support for loan forgiveness.
00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:38.959
Uh so for providers that are willing to step into that space and work, commit to two or three years, um, they can get some help on their loans during that time.
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:47.519
And so it we're just trying to facilitate getting providers into those spaces and help with the debt-to-income ratio that our profession faces.
00:06:47.839 --> 00:06:51.199
Uh so we're hoping this can get across the finish line this year.
00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:59.839
And and you know, I think APTA's goal is to get 10,000 letters sent um from students out to their legislators across the nation this year.
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:11.360
And you know, if we can do that, I think it really kind of tees up those of us uh like myself that are out uh meeting with legislators, uh really trying to drive home these points.
00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:28.399
And if they're hearing from not just me or or my counterparts across the country, but um for the students and to be able to speak to the impact that these types of things would have to get them, you know, into a quality job and and hopefully help them with their with their loans early on.
00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:30.000
Excellent.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:41.199
Um, I know that that's gonna be happening on a couple of different campuses, at least between um, or with the students rather, but uh thanks for sharing the the news as well with us.
00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:44.480
Um anything else top of mind for you, Nick?
00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:50.160
Yeah, I mean I think uh not too far away is uh PT month, right?
00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:51.759
October's coming up here too.
00:07:51.839 --> 00:07:57.920
And so uh we talked about the student conclave and and a variety of uh other there's other things going on in October as well.
00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:03.839
I want to just put a pitch in for uh global PT Day of service is October 10th this year.
00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:08.639
I know our early professional group is uh working on coordinating some events.
00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:14.079
We've done some cleanup events, we've uh we've volunteered at a number of places across the state.
00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:19.680
Um, so I really appreciate the early professional SIG working on um setting up opportunities for everybody.
00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:29.279
And and even if you know one of those events is not convenient for you, or you know, just hope people will get out um and just contribute to their communities outside of the clinic.
00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:32.879
I think it's such a great day and an important thing for us to be out in the public.
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:35.120
Fantastic.
00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:36.320
All right.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:38.559
Nick, is there anything else on your mind?
00:08:38.639 --> 00:08:40.480
Otherwise, I've got some questions for you.
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:42.639
I'm throwing I'm just throwing you a curveball.
00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:43.600
Well, that's okay.
00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:44.000
Let's go.
00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:44.720
I'll let you know.
00:08:46.080 --> 00:08:52.000
I've I've been trying to close out some of these these conversations with um the good life lightning round, okay?
00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:58.639
These are some PT specific questions for you, but it's just it's rapid fire, so you just gotta go with the flow, okay?
00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:00.720
A little bit of fun.
00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:01.360
All right.
00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:03.759
Um, Ronza or Valentinos?
00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:05.440
Valentinos.
00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:06.080
Okay.
00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:10.240
Are you a coffee, tea, or energy drink guy to get the the day going?
00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:12.639
100% iced tea.
00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:14.960
Ice tea, sweet or just regular?
00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:16.559
No, no, just regular.
00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:17.279
Okay.
00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:17.919
All right.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:22.799
Um, this one might hit home a little bit, but goniometer or just eyeball it?
00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:27.759
Ooh, I know this is not gonna be well accepted, but eyeball it for sure.
00:09:29.279 --> 00:09:32.879
Uh okay, what's the one exercise you assign more than others?
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:37.360
The one exercise I assign more than others.
00:09:37.679 --> 00:09:49.440
Um being that a lot of my clinical time is spent uh around the spine, it is some form of a isometric, abdominal isometric.
00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:50.240
Okay.
00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:54.960
Uh hey, you're you're you're heading home uh from Creighton.
00:09:55.279 --> 00:09:56.399
Windows are rolled down.
00:09:56.480 --> 00:09:58.080
What song's planned?
00:09:58.960 --> 00:10:00.000
Oh, right now?
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:01.840
Uh Olivia Dean.
00:10:01.919 --> 00:10:03.120
Something Olivia Dean.
00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:03.679
Okay.
00:10:04.320 --> 00:10:04.799
All right.
00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:06.240
Last one for you.
00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:12.000
Best part of my job is Oh, it's interacting with students, no doubt about it.
00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:12.799
Yeah.
00:10:13.120 --> 00:10:14.480
It's the best part for sure.
00:10:14.720 --> 00:10:15.200
I love it.
00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:17.200
Now I keep getting older, right?
00:10:17.360 --> 00:10:17.519
Yeah.
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:27.840
So I'm doing my best to just uh stay in tune with what's uh what's cool, hip, all the things, and me saying those two things makes me yes, exactly right.
00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:30.480
So clearly I'm not doing a good job of it.
00:10:30.720 --> 00:10:35.759
Uh but yeah, no, the student interactions is by far, in my opinion, the best part of teaching.
00:10:36.080 --> 00:10:36.799
Agreed.
00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:37.759
Agreed.
00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:39.279
Uh hey, thanks for your time.
00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:40.720
Thanks for all the work that you're doing.
00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:42.639
Uh, thanks for the updates as well.
00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:45.039
Listeners, thank you for listening into this.
00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:55.840
Uh, I hope that it was informative, uh, keeps you up to date, up to speed, what's going on in the organization and across the state as well, and hope that you can find ways to continue being part of it as well.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:10:57.440
Thanks for listening.
00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:00.960
Thanks for tuning in to the APTA Nebraska podcast.
