00:00:18.879 --> 00:00:24.640
Join us as we connect with experts, share insights, and build community throughout our profession.
00:00:25.280 --> 00:00:27.760
Welcome back to the APTA Nebraska podcast.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:32.479
My name is Brad Dexter, your host, and I'm joined today by Rochelle Hoffman.
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:33.359
Rochelle, how are you?
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:34.399
Doing great.
00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:35.439
Thanks, Brad.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:36.240
Absolutely.
00:00:36.479 --> 00:00:41.520
Rochelle is our esteemed president of the Nebraska Foundation for Physical Therapy.
00:00:41.679 --> 00:01:15.840
And as we try to get into some rhythms on this podcast, this is a great point in the year to have a conversation with Rochelle to just hear about the work that the Nebraska Foundation for Physical Therapy is doing, the awards that exist, the people that have won awards, and to just take a moment to celebrate all of those things, as well as try to inform you, our listeners and physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, to make sure that you understand the awards that are out there and that are available for you within our state and our practice.
00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:17.920
So, Rochelle, welcome back to the show.
00:01:18.079 --> 00:01:19.599
It's good to have you.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:25.439
Why don't we just start off with some of the highlights from the last year?
00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:34.000
So, do you want to talk about some of our award recipients and point our listeners toward the work that's being done there?
00:01:34.400 --> 00:01:35.040
Absolutely.
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:47.040
So, just as a brief reminder for those of you that may not be familiar with the foundation, we overall exist and our mission is to advance Nebraska physical therapy as a profession.
00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:56.879
And so we do this through, I'll explain today how we even have a new award for more career advancement opportunities, but then also through research that we do here in Nebraska.
00:01:57.120 --> 00:02:01.200
So I'll start off with talking about our scientific dissemination award.
00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:15.599
So this is an award that students, clinicians that are practicing full-time or faculty could apply for that helps them to cover travel costs when they are presenting some of their work that they have done here in Nebraska.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:26.479
And overall, at the Combined Sections meeting in 2026 that was out in Anaheim, we were able to support six individuals that were presenting, which was fantastic.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:29.360
We haven't had that many in quite a few years.
00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:32.479
And so of those five were students, one was faculty.
00:02:32.639 --> 00:02:39.680
And then since CSM, we also have supported another faculty that has presented her work internationally as well.
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:44.080
And as a reminder, too, with us, we accept these applications on a rolling basis.
00:02:44.159 --> 00:02:46.000
So there is no deadline for these.
00:02:46.159 --> 00:03:00.159
So as you are presenting at conferences that maybe are within APTA or beyond, keep us in mind as you can get up to$1,500 to support your travel registration or any other conference-related expenses.
00:03:00.479 --> 00:03:03.439
Rochelle, how many times can you apply for an award like that?
00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:09.199
So for the Scientific Dissemination Award, it is a two-time lifetime award.
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:11.680
So twice that you can apply for that award.
00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:12.400
Excellent.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:12.960
Thank you.
00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:17.759
And I wanted to next go to our new award that we started this year.
00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:20.000
This is the Rising Star Award.
00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:24.080
And the Rising Star Award is for early career professionals.
00:03:24.159 --> 00:03:25.840
And what do I mean by early career?
00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:30.960
That means within five years of graduating from either your PTA or PT program.
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:36.639
And the goal of this award is to really advance your career growth.
00:03:36.719 --> 00:03:40.639
And so it's very open to multiple things that it could fund.
00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:45.280
Could be leadership training, it could be a myriad of things.
00:03:45.439 --> 00:04:01.439
And so for this application, we do have an essay that we do want written about how whatever you're asking to be supported with up to$1,500 for the funds for this award, how those funds could be used to advance your professional growth.
00:04:01.520 --> 00:04:02.719
And so how does that connect?
00:04:02.800 --> 00:04:08.240
And then we do ask for a support letter from your employer that kind of shows how does it even go beyond you?
00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:15.439
How can you bring those skills back to your place of employment to be able to share that further with your colleagues?
00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:23.360
And I'm excited to share that we did have our first awardee, so Porfirio Garcia Hernandez.
00:04:23.839 --> 00:04:28.000
He traveled to the APTA Payment Advocacy Summit in Portland, Oregon.
00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:31.439
And he actually was even awarded an award at this event.
00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:34.319
And this was the APTA Access and Opportunity Award.
00:04:34.480 --> 00:04:42.160
So we were very excited to support him as he traveled to receive that and excited to see where his career goes from here.
00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:59.600
And for students, especially as you are either getting close to graduation or maybe you're earlier in your career thinking about the scientific dissemination award, I did want to mention that the foundation will have a booth at Student Conclave that will be at UNMC and that will be in October 23rd.
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:09.279
So if you have questions about these specific awards and want to chat in person, myself or other representatives of the board will be there to chat with you further about that.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:24.480
I've got a QV applause for Porfirio and just again say congratulations to him for winning the Rising Star Award and for the award that he got out west as well.
00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:26.240
So thanks for highlighting that, Rochelle.
00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:27.199
Absolutely.
00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:32.959
And I'll highlight our last award that we give out, which is our Blanton Research Grant.
00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:45.360
So this is a research grant you can apply for, and within your budget, up to$10,000 for a project that does not have to be, you know, specifically in an academic setting.
00:05:45.519 --> 00:05:48.240
This is for someone that could be even be out in the clinic.
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:50.319
A student could even apply for this.
00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:54.800
But it's over a two-year project period.
00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:57.439
And as I said, award up to$10,000.
00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:00.480
The deadline for this is October 1st.
00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:05.279
And overall, the goal of the project needs to somehow advance the physical therapy profession.
00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:06.480
So very open.
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:14.800
I'm happy to chat with anyone that may have questions about if their project may be a good fit, or if they have questions about how to draft that application.
00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:21.759
And we do have information online about the sections, the page limit requirements, and all of that was on our website.
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:26.959
So I'm hopeful Brad will put our website link in the show notes so that you can easily access that.
00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:28.480
I do know how to do that.
00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:29.360
Thank you.
00:06:29.680 --> 00:06:30.160
Very good.
00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:39.680
The last thing I really wanted to highlight was if you are passionate about and want to donate to the foundation, we have multiple opportunities for that.
00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:45.199
A new way to donate this year, too, is that you can donate to specific awards.
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:49.040
Let's say that you are super excited about the Rising Star Award.
00:06:49.199 --> 00:06:58.959
When you go to our website and click the donate button, you could scan that QR code and just donate and say, I want my funds just to go to the Rising Star Award, or likewise could be to any of the other awards.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:06.079
Or of course, there's also the option you could do the all awards, and then it's just in a big bucket of money there.
00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:11.279
But we did highlight a few award winners for our donors this year.
00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:17.519
So just as a review, we have five different levels that we highlight and award donors.
00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:23.680
So the lowest$500 is the Wayne Purdue Fellow up to bronze, which is$1,500.
00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:30.800
Silver is a$2,500 donation, gold$5,000, and the friend of the foundation, which is$10,000.
00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:38.319
And we awarded at the silver level, Joe Pittman this year, as well as at the gold level, Gail Jensen.
00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:55.120
So we're very excited and very thankful for the uh very generous amount that they have donated to the foundation to really make it possible for us to continue to disseminate awards to all of our students, clinicians, faculty in the Nebraska area.
00:07:55.360 --> 00:07:56.160
It's fantastic.
00:07:57.199 --> 00:07:58.800
That was a lot, Rochelle.
00:07:58.959 --> 00:07:59.920
Well done.
00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:01.519
We have a lot going on.
00:08:01.600 --> 00:08:09.600
I'm excited that we're continuing to grow and yes, hopeful for even more applications over this next year for our three different awards.
00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:12.480
I love, I love all of the work that's happening.
00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:15.040
I get to serve on this board with you as well.
00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:17.600
Um there's some great people serving on the board.
00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:24.720
I uh would just also point out uh we'll likely have some fundraising opportunities that will be coming out within the next year.
00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:39.519
So um, in the case that we don't get back around to highlighting those things on this podcast, I just want to state some of them, keep your eyes open for those uh later in the fall or early winter time, um, as we'll be trying to get some fundraising opportunities out.
00:08:39.679 --> 00:09:09.679
We really are trying to um find a lot of opportunities and and and really make people aware of the opportunities that are available to them to continue supporting their career, the scholarship work that they're doing, research work that they're doing, um, and certainly support them within their places of work and growing as clinicians, uh, and certainly bringing uh good quality information back to their clinics, their places of work so that they can influence um their colleagues and the patients that they're serving as well.
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:12.080
So yeah, a lot of great work.
00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:20.960
It doesn't happen without many of you listening, um, certainly without the people that are donating to the foundation, um, and certainly without people serving.
00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:24.240
It's not a pat on my own back, it's a pat on your back, Rochelle.
00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:28.799
Um, certainly appreciate the work that you're doing there uh to make all of this happen.
00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:39.200
And I'll just say if any of our listeners are interested in being part of the foundation, we do have four spots that we will have open that we're hoping to fill.
00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:44.240
And those uh the election is around the timing of the spring meeting.
00:09:44.399 --> 00:09:52.240
So if you are interested in learning what does it mean to serve on the foundation, what is that time commitment, um, feel free to reach out to any of us on the board.
00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:56.320
I'm happy to have that discussion and would love to have you on the board with us.
00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:01.679
Well, Rochelle, before you leave, I've started a new segment on the podcast.
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:04.320
This is called the Good Life Lightning Round, okay?
00:10:04.559 --> 00:10:04.799
Okay.
00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:14.480
So I'm gonna hit you with with a number of random questions, and I'm I'm just looking for a lot of speed answers from you.
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:15.440
Can you handle that?
00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:16.399
I suppose.
00:10:16.559 --> 00:10:17.279
Here we go.
00:10:17.600 --> 00:10:17.919
Okay.
00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:20.000
You ready for the first one?
00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:20.720
Yep.
00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:21.519
All right.
00:10:21.919 --> 00:10:24.080
Runza or Valentino's?
00:10:24.399 --> 00:10:25.200
Runza.
00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:25.919
All right.
00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:31.840
What is your what would what would your walk-up song in the clinic or into your office be?
00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:33.919
Oh my goodness, that's a tough one.
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:37.919
You know, I would say I'm a sucker for all the pitch perfect songs.
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:40.879
I would say any of the pitch perfect songs from the soundtrack.
00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:42.720
All right, are you going with a cup song?
00:10:42.879 --> 00:10:44.159
You going with a cup song?
00:10:44.480 --> 00:10:44.799
Yes.
00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:46.559
Okay, let's go with a cup song.
00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:47.440
Okay.
00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:51.840
Um, coffee, tea, or an energy drink to get through a full day?
00:10:52.639 --> 00:10:56.159
Cold coffee with a lot of milk and sugar in there.
00:10:56.559 --> 00:10:56.879
Okay.
00:10:57.279 --> 00:10:58.480
Finish this sentence.
00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:02.639
The best part of my job is I was like working with students.
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:04.000
Beautiful.
00:11:04.399 --> 00:11:06.159
Um, let's see.
00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:09.600
A patient that still makes you smile.
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:21.679
Oh, I think it's not an individual patient, but a lot of my work is with older adults, and I do like high-intensity interval training stuff, and I'm just still amazed at some of the uh things that they can do.
00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:26.720
We just finished up a class where they were doing burpees and all these crazy things.
00:11:26.799 --> 00:11:29.919
So, and we did have, I guess, one person to answer your question.
00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:37.440
We did have one individual that set the um world record for rowing, a 90-year-old individual.
00:11:37.679 --> 00:11:39.039
So that was astounding.
00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:41.360
So I would if I had to pick one person, I would say her.
00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:42.399
That's so great.
00:11:42.639 --> 00:11:44.399
All right, last one for you.
00:11:44.639 --> 00:11:48.159
Um, most used phrase that you say to patients.
00:11:49.679 --> 00:11:50.480
I don't know.
00:11:50.799 --> 00:11:55.440
I don't for full transparency, I don't practice actively as much anymore.
00:11:55.519 --> 00:12:01.279
But when I was more um practicing full time, I think I said cool beans a lot for some reason.
00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:02.879
I don't know why.
00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:05.840
I think that's maybe a phased out thing.
00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:07.279
So it's probably in the archives.
00:12:07.360 --> 00:12:09.600
People don't really say that anymore, so maybe that states me.
00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:15.440
But I feel like I said cool beans a lot when we I think that's a phrase segue into other next exercise or things.
00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:25.679
Yeah, I think that's a phrase that has been um, you know, just thrown into a pit at this point, or you know, that a certain generation of us still use occasionally.
00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:27.039
Uh something like that.
00:12:27.440 --> 00:12:28.399
I used to use it a lot more.
00:12:28.480 --> 00:12:32.000
I don't as much anymore, but in my clinical practice days I did.
00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:32.879
That's great.
00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:34.480
Well, Rochelle, thank you for your time.
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:41.360
Thank you for the work that you're doing with the foundation, and uh thanks for all of the the great information that you shared with us today, too.
00:12:41.519 --> 00:12:46.320
Um listeners, I hope that this podcast was beneficial and informative to you.
00:12:46.480 --> 00:12:56.639
Um, and we hope to see some of your names coming across in these applications um or wanting to serve uh with the foundation uh here soon as well.
00:12:56.799 --> 00:12:58.399
So again, Rochelle, thanks for your time.
00:12:58.720 --> 00:12:59.279
Thank you, Brad.
00:12:59.360 --> 00:13:00.240
Great to be here.
00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:04.000
