Speaker 1: Well, good afternoon to you, and happy cloudy Thursday. It's the twenty third of January and I'm Stacy Lee with you for afternoons here on five Double A. And if those clouds do what they're threatening to do, you might be taking the weather with you today. We'll see if there's any rain on the cards at all when we talk to the weather Bureau later on this afternoon. Oh I'm looking forward to that chat because this weekend it might look might not feel like it today, but it'll be heating up for the Australia Day Long weekend and I cannot wait for it. The tour down Under, we'll be going through McLaren Vale on the Saturday, going all around our state of course, so very much looking forward to that. I'm also looking forward to talking housing today. It's this is such a huge issue at the moment. We know all about the housing crisis. If you've tried to buy a house recently, you'll know how difficult it is. Or maybe you've got kids or grandkids wanting to get into the market and they just can't do it. They can't find anything within their budget, or maybe they're relying on the bank of Mum and dad or grandma and grandpa to be able to get into the property market. We know, we know the one thing we need is more houses, and while we are getting some, they just don't appear to be coming quick enough. There was a National Housing Accord that was signed and we'll check in today to see where South Australia is. Are we on track to meet our commitment for the National Housing Accord or are we falling behind. You'll hear from the Housing Minister, Nick Champion in a few moments time. You'll also hear from the opposition Michelle Lensink. And then there is something that could help because there has been a new development that's been approved today. This is the development at Gilberton on the Is it the walk of ill Arms, No, the Buckingham Arms. It's in Walkville, the Buckingham Arms site. It's quite a big site and there has been a few different designs, a few different proposals for the site. But today one of the designs has been approved. So we'll tell you which one and you are going to hear from the developer to see what you can expect. It's a mix of apartments and also short term accommodation sites short stay apartments. I wonder why that's been included, and will they be privately owned short stay sites as in the Airbnb's or will they be government owned for crisis accommodation short stay sites. So we'll find out. We'll talk about that this afternoon. Also Entertainment News with Shane A. Bassett. He's got some suggestions for you if you're thinking of heading to the cinema or streaming something. The sun afternoon there's a big there's a big entertainment announcement happening tonight. OSCAR nominations will be announced. I know for people like Shane A. Bassett, this is their Christmas, so I'm sure he is so excited to talk about it. And a bit later on today, Costbusters will talk about energy bills. I don't know about you, but I'm on a time of use tariff, so I have a different rate that I'm charged at different times of the day. There's a shoulder rate, there's an off peak, and then there's an on peak. If I'm using the power during peak times, I'll pay more. If I'm using it during shoulder and off peak, I'll pay less. And I have tried to adjust the way I consume my energy to suit that. But sometimes it's not that easy. When you're working pretty much a nine to five like many people do, it's not as easy. You can't there's no point coolling the house down now if there's no one home. So what can we do? And how hard is it for you to read your electricity bill? I don't know about you, but it just looks like absolute jargon to me sometimes when I pick it up. So Liz will join you, Liz Stevens from Energy Consumers Australia, and she'll try and assist us in reading our energy bill and trying to decide whether or not that time of use is right for you, because it is right for some people, but it's not right for everyone. So we'll work out who it could be good for and who it could benefit. Looking forward to that chat this afternoon, eleven minutes past one here on five Double A. As I say, there was a National Housing Accord signed not too long ago one point two million additional homes by twenty twenty nine, and the number of homes being built in each state have now started to come out for the quarter at least last quarter. So how is South Australia doing well in the September quarter, over three thousand dwellings were completed across the state. Three thy one hundred and four to be exact. Sounds like good news that it's still about one thousand dollars short of the required amount of houses per quarter to reach the target. Now, I know it's not that simple. We don't just pick a number and divide by quarters. But it's maybe not early. Maybe not good signs early on for the state government. Let's see what the minister thinks. I'm sure he disagrees with me. Nick Champion is the Housing minister. Good afternoon, Nick Champion.
00:05:27
Speaker 2: Oh hi Staphie, how are you? A happy New Year?
00:05:29
Speaker 1: Happy new year to you as well. So when you got the quarterly stats out of how many homes were built, what was your reaction? Were you concerned? Were you happy?
00:05:40
Speaker 3: Well?
00:05:41
Speaker 2: I mean I've been on record about these targets in the Parliament and everybody understands that to go from traditionally South Astralia does about eleven thousand a year, that's been our kind of average. HU the last of five or six years. There was one year where we did fourteen thousand, nearly broke the industry because completion times brought, you know, ballooned out and you know rates for tradees went up and a whole range of issues occurred, and that was right during COVID and home Builder. So the last thing we want to do is you know, expand out to sixteen thousand a year, which is effectively the National Accord target, but then have a corresponding hangover the next year. What we want to do is, you know, build the capacity of the sector. We want to work with the Property Council, YUDIA, HIA, master Builders and most importantly put in place the pipeline of work that is going to allow them to have an efficient program of work which drives down costs and hopefully drives up both commencements and completions.
00:06:53
Speaker 1: And I'm sure they welcome that. We'll hear from Bruce Jute from the Property Council just after one thirty. They didn't welcome though. All three of those groups that you mentioned, the Property Council, Udia, of and Development Institute and Master Builders, none of them were too happy about the government's garage changes that were proposed earlier this week to increase the size of garages in new build and increase the number in certain builds over two bedrooms. How do you reconcile that that you want to work with this industry, you want to make it easier for them to build houses. Yet you announce a policy and they all say it's going to make it harder for them to do that.
00:07:30
Speaker 2: Well nevitably, you know, I'm sure Brusol I don't want to put words in his mouth, but you know he's talked about the tree changes as well. Look at its complex because we're you know, South Australia and Adelaide in particular has been very reliant on what we call general infield and of course that's creating some issues in our suburban streets, both as car parking and also with the destruction of tree canopy. So what the state government's trying to do is more emphasis strategic strategic infield. Subwick you know, are no longer project like Smithfield Barracks, all of those big strategic sites right next to trains where we've got a lot of lands we want to build you know a lot of a lot of apartments and out homes and we want to build more green field, which is why we're putting in the big investment in water and sewage pipes out north and down south, and that helps to take the pressure off that, you know, the infield supply, which can be very very intense down some streets. So the garrete changes we're going to consult obviously with the Property Council and all those other industry groups. It'd be fair to say they still won't be happy at the end of it than they are at the beginning of it. But I think most of us understand cars have got much bigger over the last two decades. The Australian standard is not sufficient to accommodate that. The Austrain standard is being reviewed, so garage sizes we're going to get bigger at some point. What we've decided to do is, you know, if you like, act decisively, give them certainty, put in place this arrangement. And then what we've also done is we've said we're going to bring back the humble car port because at the moment we're mandating everybody to build a proper garage. What we're going to do in this bill is say, you know, as long as you put in place the facility to put in the garage later on, you can have the humble carport with a roller door.
00:09:33
Speaker 1: Okay, we do have some good news on the housing front today. Of course, the State Commission Assessment Panel SCAP has approved the proposal for one hundred and thirty apartments and fifty six short stay apartments on the Buckingham Alms site in Gilberton. I assume you've you've seen this news, Minister, you'd be across this. Yeah.
00:09:54
Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting because once the code amendments have done, the rezoning's done, then it really goes to GAP, which is an independent panel of the State Planning Commission. And of course they do their work and I don't interfere or get into that work. I'm like you stay feel a bit of an observer of it. So I obviously know what's going to the panel. I'll get reports on that and I see their decisions. But you know, in this case, the SCAP's done a really good job. I think of, you know, improving a development application, making sure that the finished outcome and design is good, and having a mind for having supply as well in the process. So I think it's a sign that the planning system is working.
00:10:41
Speaker 1: And I'll talk to the developer about this in about half an hour's time. But are you across what the short stay apartments will be fifty six of them.
00:10:52
Speaker 2: Well, this huge demand for short stay in the city, and part of that is live golf. You know, I know this because I'm the Minister in charge of Westpeak to Trust and just think huge occupancy rises around gather around around live golf a at the West Beach Caravan Park. So you know, there's a lot of demand out there and I think developers are responding to that. And I think it's sensible to have a distinct category rather than kind of leaving it to Rapidy's rules within your development. So I think having a distinct category sensible. And the other thing I deserve is, you know, we've got some quite large penthouses that will have pretty stunning views and that really will attract downsizes who probably have done pretty well in the property market, got a nice big home and in one of the inner city suburbs and the heritage suburbs, who can sell out, make a capital gain by a great apartment and enjoy their retirement and that family home can go to another family and that helps, you know, helps stop come onto the mark in what is a very tight type to South Australian and Adelaide. The real estate market.
00:12:06
Speaker 1: So having those fifty six short stay apartments as its own category as opposed to the one hundred and thirty residential ones, does that mean there'll be limitations on the residential apartments not being turned into Airbnbs. If you do want it to be a short stay, you have to buy one of one of the short stay ones or are you aware of it?
00:12:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm not aware of what rules the developer will be putting on that, but I am you know, I do know that there are other developers around town who are restricting the use of Airbnb, and that's to make sure that you know, residents get an appropriate experience, you know, a residential experience as opposed to a short stay one. So I think people are these markets are maturing, people are getting better at managing them. And obviously, you know, if you're you're buying an expensive apartment, you probably don't want you you probably don't want your neighbor airbnbing. But if it's in somewhere else in the development, probably works really well for you. So because your friends can come stay and go and watch the footy or the Gulf.
00:13:12
Speaker 1: Okay, we have a question on the text line about the brewery site, the Southern site, and there were the private sector was quite critical of the government when you bought that site, because, as we often see with building hospitals and homes, for example, a lot of the time the private sector can get it done more quickly and cheaper. Caesar on the text line, wants to know what's going to happen on the southern site. Will there be car parks there or are you going to, I guess implement your new garage rules on your own site. And I'd like to know what's going to happen to the streets. If you and your government have identified that there's an issue with cars on the streets, are you going to make the streets wider?
00:13:53
Speaker 2: Well Sarthak's already got a pretty good grid system if you look at the historical maps of South it was a residential development. Of course, the Colonel Light was one of the first landowners down there, so it's already got a very good grid system. Look in reality, no private developer could have developed it quicker than the government because there were thirty four million dollars worth of sewerage works and upgrades that had to be done, which don't just support subject, but that whole precinct and a good chunk of Adelaide as well, and a developer to face having to negotiate with SA Water about that, whereas it's much easier when and I guess this is the power of the new department that I had, We could actually facilitate that very quickly, had the technical knowledge and the decision making to do that, you know quickly. The other thing is a private developer could not have renamed the suburb as we have done, which I think has been a very popular initiative and one that allows a distinct community to arise an old name for a new suburb righton edge of a of the park, parklands and new public transport. And we're also handing back six thousand square meters of public open space in the form of the river bank, back into the public realm. And it's unlikely any private developer would have done that. So, you know, it's a very strategically important piece of land. It's part of an arc of growth from Bowden through High Marsh and right along that boulevard, and we're sort of setting the scene so that private development next door and along that boulevard can happen. Because if you drive along there. You know, there's a lot of unused, disused sites or underutilized sites, you know, one story retail and the like and at grade car parks and that's not a good not a good outcome for growth in the city.
00:15:47
Speaker 1: Okay, minister, thank you for your time.
00:15:49
Speaker 2: Thanks Bopie.
00:15:50
Speaker 1: That's Nick Champion, the housing minister. There. What do you think eight double two to three double O double oh is the number to call after this, we'll find out what the opposition thinks.
00:15:59
Speaker 4: Pauly Afternoons with Stacey Lee.
00:16:02
Speaker 1: Let's continue the conversation about housing now, and Michelle Lencinc is the shadow Housing Minister for the Liberal Party and joins you now, good afternoon, Michelle.
00:16:11
Speaker 5: Lencinc, Good afternoon, Stacy.
00:16:14
Speaker 1: So we're falling behind more than eight hundred dwellings at the moment, falling behind the national target. Did this surprise you, Look.
00:16:24
Speaker 5: It's hugely concerning. It equates to something like three and a half thousand per annum or a third that we're falling short already so early in the five years of the National cord, which started as of first of July last year. So it's hugely concerning. In the middle of a housing crisis that we're not hitting those targets, and clearly, you know, we've got people in terrible situations where they're sleeping rough first home buyers can't get their foot into the housing market, and so we just need to be doing a lot better than we are.
00:17:00
Speaker 1: And affordability, I think, I think people were hoping that it would ease to get into the market, to find a house and to get a rental that's affordable, but it just hasn't yet in Adelaide. And for homeowners it's been great the equity in your house, but for those trying to get into the market or needing a house, it just doesn't seem to have eased.
00:17:21
Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's always you know, we all remember those days if you're a homeowner, those early days of trying to find an affordable house. I remember, you know, twenty years ago, it took me quite a while to find something that was in the price bracket of a person who was on one income. So it's not always been easy, and it's certainly a lot harder at the moment. And the key to that is that we need more supply in the market, So we need to be building a lot more houses and doing a lot more than we're doing at the moment to help people in that situation.
00:17:57
Speaker 1: And these things are, as we know, plex and building a house does take time. So what would the opposition do differently if you're elected in twenty twenty six, How would you fix the housing crisis better than how Labors is trying to well.
00:18:13
Speaker 5: One of the key here is that we've most recently made announcements on is in relation to apprentices and trainees. So we've seen those numbers drop since the Marshall government lost office. We need something like thirty thousand construction and housing workers in South Australia, and that's not just for housing, because we've got those big projects of South Road and the Women's and Children's Hospital competing at the same time for the same workforce. So we've released our Apprenticeship Plan which includes providing for three apprenticeships so people can get in much more quickly, guaranteed funding for construction training, providing mentors for apprentices because we know that they's a very high dropout rate for people in that system. In lifting the threshold for payroll tax from one point five to two point one million and exempting trainees and apprentices from those as well as a couple of other things. So workforce is quite critical at the moment while we're in this building building phase. We've also got concerns that there's no plan for the volume of construction materials that South Australia needs to be producing, which is, you know, things like quarry sand and rocks and a range of those things. So the sector doesn't know, you know, how much it should be producing, whether it should make investments into those new supply areas. And I've also been quite critical of the government for pulling the rug out from under the private sector in terms of purchasing the West End site delays that Aldinger and other sites where we've got local builders who would have put hundreds of thousands of dollars into those bids, only for the government to step in and make announcements so that it could be seen actually doing something that housing. But in fact it's something like ninety seven percent of houses that are built in South Australia are built by the private sector, and so we need to appreciate that we need to be getting out of their way and supporting them as much as possible.
00:20:21
Speaker 1: A lot of the employment plans that you spoke about early in the answer there relate to apprentices and trainees, and I'm sure that would be welcome, but I guess that doesn't help with the more experienced levels of staff. An apprentice and a trainee great on a work site. I've got tradees in my family and they love to hire them, but you know, there's only so much experience there that they can do, and only so much work they can undertake on their own without the supervision. So I guess that's only addressing part of the employment sector.
00:20:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, well, they're part of the you know, if we're going to scale up, I guess there's things that we could andually look at as well about attracting people back into the workforce, because we do know that through COVID we did lose people as well, but it certainly the future workforce that we need to be getting into the system now, and we've seen those numbers drop, which is the proof in the putting that the current policy settings really aren't working.
00:21:23
Speaker 6: And I think you do.
00:21:24
Speaker 5: You know, everyone would appreciate it quite physical work, so you often do need to focus on the younger recruits to get them in the door so that they can be performing the work on site.
00:21:37
Speaker 1: And before I let you go, has the opposition formed a position on the government's plan that was announced earlier this week to increase the size of garages and the number of garages on new builds in some cases, will you be supporting this change?
00:21:51
Speaker 5: Well, look, we've got to come to a formal position, which will do when we've received the legislation and have an opportunity to meet as a group to gus all those sorts of things. That's just a formal process. But topically, it's extremely concerning about you know, when we've got a housing crisis and new builds are so expensive, and my concern is that you know, potentially these large garages are just going to be providing more storage for people and it's not actually going to have any relief in those areas where the houses are already there. So I think it is a little bit of smoke and mirrors on behalf of the government in terms of saying that when in fact, you know the areas where these are problems, those houses are voluntarily built. There's no suggestion that they're going to be torn down so that they can put in larger garages. So we're still talking to industry about what that means particularly for affordability and for those first home buyers, because those are certainly people that we need to be looking after into the future.
00:23:00
Speaker 1: Okay, well we'll wait and see on that one. Michelle Lencinc. Thank you for your time.
00:23:04
Speaker 5: Thank you, Stagsey.
00:23:05
Speaker 1: That's Michelle Lencinc. Shadow Housing Minister. Time for news headlines now and after that you'll hear from Bruce Jitta from the Property Council of South Australia. What does he think about this? And as always I'd love to get your thoughts. Eight double two to three double oh is the number.
00:23:22
Speaker 4: To call five double A afternoon swift Stacey Lee twenty six.
00:23:28
Speaker 1: Minutes to two here on five double A Getty. What if the text messages from you about this these new housing statistics showing South Australia is behind on its target at least from the last quarter for the National Housing Accord. This person says, well, we're talking about the brewery site SOUTHWK. The Minister Nick Champion brought that up and said, you know, if we didn't buy that site, we wouldn't have been able to change the suburb. Paul says, yeah, they changed the name of a suburb. Well done, and Jay is a bit more positive. There should be a Southic date when they give out Southern beer. I'm happy to be the beer master on that day. I'd be happy to be the beer master as well. Jay, I've joined you. Someone else is talking about why don't you make bigger roads rather than making them small streets, and Chris says the new suburbs should have footpaths, play areas close to homes for children to play. Homes too close together, as you hear what the neighbors are talking about, developers and councils are too greedy for money, nowhere to grow trees. Plus, no house should be allowed to have dark roofs. And Paul is talking about new builds. We're talking about the approval of a development on the bucking Arms site in Gilberton. Will be talking about that in just a moment. And this text it says no doubt strata fees will be huge for a property in these high rise properties. Is it really affordable? Well, and try and ask those questions when we talk about that in a few moments. But now Bruce Jittay is the executive director of the Property Council in South Australia and joins you. Now, good afternoon, Bruce Jittay Stacey, let's start with the housing accord and South Australia not reaching that sort of quarterly target. Are you surprised?
00:25:23
Speaker 7: Not overle surprise. Know the target is ambitious, it's certainly welcomed. I think if you don't have a target, then it's impossible to measure your progress. We're about a thousand homes sort this quarter. That means it starts to get backloaded, so next quarter we're going to have to deliver even more. Notwithstanding with fowl to hit that target this quarter, so still a lot to do in this space.
00:25:51
Speaker 1: There have been, as we've spoken about, quite a few land releases in the last couple of years, but as we know with land releases, it takes a while for the homes to be built. Do you think that that will start to filter through the system and there'll be quarters where not only are we achieving the target, but maybe overachieving on the target or am I just being too optimistic?
00:26:10
Speaker 7: You're too optimistic in the short term, that's for sure. What we know is that the land releases were announced. Subsequently to that there was a realization that infrastructure had not been invested in for decades. Never been a problem in South Australia before because we had an experience in the exponential growth which is now on our doorsteps. So a significant investment has to be made into a civil infrastructure, water waste water, which has happened. That's the positive, but there is a long way to go when you think of the land releases. Concordia, Dry Creek, celic Speech on Kaparinga Heights have just had the deed sign but if you're someone out there waiting to get into the housing market, not one house has delivered on any of those lands sides today.
00:27:03
Speaker 1: And then I sort of put to the Minister that despite all the you know, pomp and ceremony surrounding the change of the name of the suburb of the brewery site to Suwik that it was heavily criticized at the time by it Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think by yourself and other members of the building industry and construction and urban development saying that governments should not be buying this land. Private sector can do these things much quicker and probably cheaper than a state government can. He sort of said, well, you know, we wouldn't have been able to change the suburb, we wouldn't have been able to release some of the land back to the community if a developer took it on. What do you say to that?
00:27:46
Speaker 7: Look, you know, changing the name is nice to have, but at the moment, you know, we're putting the size of future garages and unlocking streets that are yet to be constructed. When you look at the the garage policy into the four people are getting into the housing market, I mean we're parking before people or nice suburbanks in front of housing. Affordability is nice to have. I wish we had the privilege to be able to do that. At the moment, we're just focusing on actually getting home bills for them, an accommodation be then apartment townhouses, house and land in Greenfield site and retirement villages as well. So there's a whole range of housing diversity that the state needs. It's about to enter a period of unprecedented infrastructive spending activity North South comin or hydrogen Northern Water. There's winds and children's hospital. There's so many huge protests before we've got a skill shortage now, which I know you were touched on with the minister earlier, do we have the people to actually do the construction. Well, it's about to get a whole lot worse. So so important that we all work together and the Government's done some positive things. But I'd liken it to you know, having their thoughts flat on the accelerator while the handbrake is still pulled all the way up, because every step they take they also make it more difficult to develop.
00:29:20
Speaker 1: Home might make for a pretty good burnout. That is that how you do a burnout on the accelerated handbreker. I've never done one.
00:29:30
Speaker 7: I think spinning the wheels, Stacey, I think is what I'm trying to say.
00:29:33
Speaker 4: Oh no, I get it.
00:29:35
Speaker 1: I understood the analogy. I just thought of burnout straight away. Maybe that tells you more about where my mind is. Let's talk about the actual target. Okay, this twenty twenty nine target that was a national one to meet one point two million dollars a million dollar one point two million houses. Let's hope they're not one point two million dollars all of them. The South Australian target was just over eighty three thousand of that. And when it's when you break it down, what's just over over four thousand, So where are we actually sitting sorry, just over four thousand per quarter? Where are we actually sitting?
00:30:15
Speaker 7: Well, we built about eleven on thousand in the last twelve months and the most recent quarter statistics out from the ABF are about three thousand, one hundred odds, so about a thousand homes below target for this quarter. So you know that's measurable, you know, And you've got to hold governments to account on the promises and the targets that they've agreed to, and so far it's a fail. There's a lot of work to be done, we all know how, and departments take time to build. You can't switch these things on straight away. But it's also why code amendments like Glenside, the Buckleham arms. I know you've got someone speaking about that soon. Well you ask them how long that process has taken. It's been unnecessary, it's ended up being approved.
00:31:09
Speaker 8: But all that.
00:31:10
Speaker 7: Happens is dwellings get more expensive because the most challenging things for developers at the moment is making things stack up and time is money, I know.
00:31:22
Speaker 1: And then I did ask the minister as well about the garage policy that was announced earlier this week. So he said, they're still got to do consultation on it. But it sounds like yourself and new colleagues and the Urban Development Institute and the master builders, he said. I think his quote was they probably still won't be overly happy at the end of it.
00:31:43
Speaker 7: Oh well, I'll be this point if they're doing consultation with a predetermined outcome or already in mind. Look the amazing thing about the garage legislation that they're proposing. All the people who are having challenges currently, So the ones complaining about, you know, garages aren't big enough. Everyone's parking in the street, the rubbish truck current pick up the rubbish, they can't navigate their street. Well, this does absolutely nothing for them. This is legislation for development that have not even started being built yet, so it's not going to address the issue that people are complaining about. And oftentimes garages have just been used as a motive of storage, so just having a bigger garage actually doesn't address the problem. The real fix is around public transport, workable suburbs, walkable city, more cycling paths. That's the real issue. But that's the harder fix. The easy fix is a populist policy that actually doesn't change the lives of anyone currently living in a home or living on us. So this legislation truly is flawed. It's a bit of a smoke screen and it's really disappointing in the midst of a housing crisis. The government's looking at oversimplification on preregulations, increasing garage sizes, and I think putting parking before people is not the way to bring housing to the main stream. And there's another reason why house prices up fourteen percent in the last felve months in South.
00:33:29
Speaker 1: Australia and not really any sign of slowing down at least for now. Bruce Day, thanks so much for your time.
00:33:37
Speaker 7: Thanks having me on, sir Bruce.
00:33:38
Speaker 1: Do you say the executive director of the Property Council in South Australia? You know the number eight double two to three double o double. Oh what do you think about this? James is in Evansville. I think we're on hold there, James, All right, come back to James. We're all busy, We've all got things to do. Lenny is in Walkley Heights.
00:33:56
Speaker 9: Hi, Lenny, Yeah, can I I'm currently renting and looking to move into another place because I'm sharing here with my son and my wife, but in the process, I've just discovered firsthand how desperate it is out there for people on low incomes that are trying to find a place to rent. Where we're listed with the House and Trust, I've told us we've got a six year waiting list, and every open inspection that we go to there are sixty to eighty people there filing for you. And I'm hearing that there are two and three families living in three bedroom homes. I'm hearing about people that are living in tents in people's backyards. This is the reality of what's going on in a country at the moment, and I'm really dismayed at the state of the nation and where we've gotten to.
00:35:02
Speaker 10: I want to know what the government, what.
00:35:05
Speaker 9: The Housing Trust, is doing for people that are marginalized, that have low incomes. I watched a program recently. I was absolutely gobsmacked. The figure was absolutely beyond my comprehension. They said something like over four hundred thousand single elderly women are homeless in Australia. Now they're they're talking about women living in their cars, living in caravans, not by choice, but living in desperate situations, couts their thing, this sort of thing. Can you believe that over four hundred thousand.
00:35:55
Speaker 1: And I don't want to believe it, Lenny. It's a shocking statistic, and I really appreciate you bringing it up and of course telling us your experience. I've had a family member who's gone through the same thing, you know, lining up with ten, twenty fifty other families and you trying to get a rental and you see young families with kids and then older people trying to get a house, and you think, I don't know who's more deserving here. Someone needs this house and there's fifty people vying for it. It's incredibly difficult situation at the moment. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the call. We'll take a quick break and then we've got some more calls coming in eight double two to three double oh is the number if you'd like to have your say, and we'll take a little look at why there is such a need for this housing in our suburbs. And it appears that the State Commission Assessment Panel has approved a new development in Gilberton.
00:36:49
Speaker 4: Will talk about it five double a afternoon Swiss Spacey.
00:36:53
Speaker 1: Lee nine minutes to two here on five double A. We're talking at housing and South Australia is behind on its target to meet the national accord of building one point two million homes across the country by twenty twenty nine. Hasn't really been a surprise to anyone we've spoken to today that the state's behind on its target. But I think there is some optimism at least in some camps, namely the government, that it will get back on track. James is in Evanston Park.
00:37:22
Speaker 11: Hello, James hay Is Stacey.
00:37:25
Speaker 12: I think that the Minister and maybe even Bruce are sort of missing the point with about cars on streets with this garage thing. I spoke to my local member and said why aren't the streets wider? And he said because of the Australian standard, And I said him, we'll change the Australian standard. Then the Australian standard was obviously made before cars were so big and house blocks were so narrow. The other thing, in the area that I live, there's only footpath on one side of the street. Oh really, you're not allowed to park even like two wheels up on the opposite side where there's no footpath because there's technically council land, and for the life of me can't work out why we can't put two wheels up and make that road just slightly wider and slightly more accessible.
00:38:20
Speaker 1: It does get annoying to try and maneuver in between parked cars.
00:38:23
Speaker 12: And yeah, were my street's like a slalem with people, you know, on both sides having their cars outside. But we've got mom, dad and four adult kids. So there's six cars at one house. Even if they have a bigger driveway or a bigger car port or a bigger garage, that's not going to fit their cars there.
00:38:42
Speaker 1: No, no, definitely not with six adults living in the house, that's for sure. Thank you, James, appreciate the call. I want you to go to Melissa Jones, the mayor of the town of Walkerville. We're talking about this development that appears to have been approved by the State Commission Assessment Panel CITIFY. This is for the site at the Buckingham Alms in Gilberton. We were planning on speaking to the developer, but it appears that's not happening. We can't get in touch or they're not available now to talk to us. Of course, we all know there is such a need for housing and well all of our suburbs here in Adelaide, but let's talk to Melissa Jones, now the mayor of Walkerville, why it's needed in that area. Good afternoon, Mayre, Hi Stacey, thank you for your time. I imagine you're like many other mayors across the state and would like to see more housing as long as it's done right.
00:39:39
Speaker 9: Oh.
00:39:39
Speaker 13: Absolutely, And that was specifically the case for the site at the Buckingham Alms where that hotel is, which has had a large car park, a lot of land there and was right for developments. The council's view on that was that it should have been development that was medium density. The site was zoned for up to six stories and medium density development, so that's what we would have liked to have stay there and that would have given something like sixty or seventy apartments on that site what the developer put an application in for. And as you say, we're not actually approved yet through the gap website, so we're still waiting to see what the conditions were and what that approval looks like if it has indeed been approved. Was for a high density apartment block, so we've got one hundred and eighty seven dwellings there. They're not all for people to live in. Some of them, about fifty seven of them were service departments, so short term stay. But that's quite a lot more than what the site was zoned for. But it has been approved now potentially we'll wait and see.
00:40:48
Speaker 14: So it does put a lot more.
00:40:50
Speaker 13: Impact and a lot more impact to the town of Walkerville. The number of residents that we're now going to see on that small parcel of land, potentially four hundred new people living in the town of Walkerville when we only have a population of eight thousands as it is, So that's quite a significant uplift. We need to provide services to both people as well.
00:41:12
Speaker 1: Now, as you say, it doesn't look like it says approved on the SCAP website, we have a media release from Citifi, which you know they're welcoming the approval, so that's where we're getting our information from. They say that their plan has been approved. But yeah, like I said, we wanted to talk to them and that's not happening anymore. But I did want to touch on what you said there at the one hundred and thirty residential apartments and fifty six short stay apartments. Are you clear on how that would work? Would these be AIRB and B apartments or would it be service departments. I know the Watson in Walkerville has sort of a mixed use residential and short stay half of it's almost a hotel.
00:41:55
Speaker 13: Would it be like that, I don't know. I assume it is going to be something like that. I don't know the details about whether they will be individually owned by people, or whether it will be a hotel company that will come in.
00:42:08
Speaker 5: And buy part of it and use it like a hotel.
00:42:11
Speaker 13: And Airbnb for the rest. That's really a question for the developer and how it decides to operate the site.
00:42:19
Speaker 1: Okay, no problem. And in the application, was there any information on how many car parks there would be? Of course, if there's one hundred and eighty or so apartments, you'd assume that's it. At least one hundred and eighty cars, if not more.
00:42:33
Speaker 13: Yeah, they did have a so they've got a two story underground car park as part of development. I don't know exactly what has been approved. There were I can't remember off the top of my head. It was two hundred or so car parks. So we'll have to wait and see what the actual conditions are that come out of the approval in terms of the number of car parks that will be required.
00:42:52
Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Well, as I say, we did hope to talk to the developer. When I get a chance, I will ask them those questions. But appreciate your time this afternoon, mayor, So thank you, Thanks Stacey. That's Melissa Jones, the mayor of the town of Walkerville. It's time for the three o'clock news. Now three o'clock. I'm getting ahead of myself the two o'clock news. After that we can continue this conversation. We're getting some calls on it. Eight double two to three double o double. Oh. We'll also talk about cash. Cash is king, you know, I believe that, But there's some reporting in the advertiser that FPOs units are down at OTR service stations across the city and it's left some petrol buyers in shock and unable to pay for their petrol. What would happen to you if you got to the check out at the servo to pay for a petrol and they weren't accepting card. Would you have enough cash? I don't know if I would.
00:43:48
Speaker 4: Five double a Afternoon Swift Stacey the Welcome to the.
00:43:52
Speaker 1: Second hour of the Afternoon's program. I'm Stacey. We'll with you through until four o'clock and in about half an hour Shane A. Bassett will join you. He's got some entertainment news, including the Oscar nominations. They'll be announced at midnight tonight. Who's in, Who's out? I know he's excited about it. He's always excited about these things, so he can tell us. He'll give us a very comprehensive preview. And he's been reviewing the latest releases at the cinema and on your streaming services. So what has he recommended for you? Plus, as always, I love your recommendations. If there's something you're watching at the moment, let us know I need something for the long weekend. Actually eight double two to three, double o, double oh is the number if you've got a TV show or a movie recommendation. But at seven past two, the advertiser is reporting that there's been a technical issue at some OTR fuel stations, which has meant f POSS units are down. Now, this is something that we encounter from time to time, it seems to have and all too often when you know there's an internet outage, or the crowd strike outage, or that was huge and people couldn't pay for petrol, couldn't pay for food, couldn't pay for groceries. I don't know about you, but I always carry some cash with me. I am not sure if it would be enough if I was at a servo and I filled my car up. I usually have a fifty in my wallet hidden somewhere, but I don't think it would be enough to pay for petrol. Would you have enough? Eight double two to three double O double oh is the number to call or the text number zero double four eight zero eight thirteen ninety five nil. In Claire says. One day we had a bad storm in Burrow. The whole town was out without power. You could get petrol if you had cash because they only had a small generator set up. I couldn't even get cash from the ATM, so I had to do an eighty four k round trip to get petrol and cash due to the whole town being out, especially was I was in a hurry to get a friend at Swan Reach. Oh my gosh, an absolute nightmare, Neil. And like I say, it seems like this is happening all too often. Sally Tindall is the insights director at Canstar Data and joins you now, hallo, Sally, Hallo, Stacey, how are you good? Thank you? Are you a cash carrier?
00:46:15
Speaker 15: I am not a cash carrier. So if I was at that petrol station and I couldn't, I'd already filled up my tank.
00:46:21
Speaker 16: I would be in a spot of.
00:46:23
Speaker 17: Bother I put it that way because.
00:46:26
Speaker 15: I just don't seem to carry a center around. It's not something I like to have to bother about.
00:46:33
Speaker 2: But of course, so often, well not that.
00:46:35
Speaker 15: Often, but often technology can fail and it can leave you kind of, you know, very much shortchanged. If you're not carrying cash.
00:46:43
Speaker 1: It can and you know, we it is convenient.
00:46:46
Speaker 2: I do.
00:46:47
Speaker 1: I tap more often than I pay with cash, but I do like to have some there as a backup. But I do tap. I'd say probably ninety percent of the time if I'm being totally honest. And we've spoken before about those extra surcharges that come with trapping your phone. And so often banks don't even give cash out anymore. They force you to go to the atm outside, and they're reducing the number of ATMs as well. It feels like the people in charge of money don't want us to use our money.
00:47:18
Speaker 15: It does feel like that a little bit simmily with all the surch charges on top of things as well. It's interesting a couple of things have been you know, changes have been under foot recently. So back at the very end of last year, the Treasurer announced that the government was going to mandate that businesses had to accept cash on essential items from twenty twenty six. That will help, you know, those people that are high cash users that they prefer to pay in cash to be able to have confidence that when they get to a shop they're going to accept that money as legal tender for essential items. Because at this point in time, there's no provision where businesses have to accept cash. They can be completely digital if they choose to. The government is also and the RBA in particular is looking at surcharging on those electronic payments. So the government has said, well, the RBA is you know, undertaking a review right now, but if you know, if they don't move on this, we will we will ban debit card surcharges. It'll be interesting to see what where the RBA lands on this one because I certainly know that CBA, Austrai's biggest bank, is campaigning to have all surcharges scrapped, which kind of then makes it an even playing field between cash users and you know, people who want to pay electronically. There's changes the foot, but there's still so many problems to be tackling in this environment where it's getting really expensive to circulate cash through our country, especially a country like Australia which is so geographically big. And as you said, Stacey, we are seeing a lot of bank branches, ATMs, even bank of post terminals starting to close. So I pulled out the latest figures for you that we had from June last year. So in South Australia the number of branches dropped by five percent in compared to the previous year and thirty two percent compared to five years ago. And the number of ATMs dropped by four percent in the last year, but fifty percent in the last five years. It's astonishing to see how, you know, ATMs are really dropping. Life flies at the moment well.
00:49:29
Speaker 1: And as well, it then seems to be at odds with what the banks want you to do, because if you try and go into a bank to talk to a teller at the moment to try and get cash out. They'll always try and direct you to an ATM, and I think, well, where are the ATMs? You're taking them all away or they charge you.
00:49:44
Speaker 18: See, so taking money out.
00:49:47
Speaker 15: From the branch, I know it does feel like loose loose at the moment if.
00:49:52
Speaker 1: You do want to access your own money, especially if it's you know, a higher amount, if you're buying a car or something and you need to get out a few thousand dollars. It's happened to someone in my family that the bankers said, oh, we don't actually carry that much cash on us. You have to put in an order. And I'm like, what do you mean you're a bank If you don't carry it, who does.
00:50:11
Speaker 14: It's incredible, isn't it.
00:50:13
Speaker 15: Certainly we looked into this a while ago with you know, some of the big four bank branches have gone cash lists. They might be called something different, it might be a CBA Specialist center or something like that, but some of them, I think West Pact from memory was the one that still you can go into any old branch and absolutely get cash over the counter, But all of them said you have to call ahead if you're going to want to take out a large amount because they don't have that much dog behind the counter. It's interesting, isn't it.
00:50:43
Speaker 1: It's crazy. Yeah, we're getting so many texts on this. Andrew says, God, no, I don't even carry cash. Arthur says, why have so many gone cash lists? Carry real money? And problem solved? You need to back up. I always carry real money. Yes, sorry, that was from John yep. I agree with you, John, I always have a bit of real money. Danny. He's reminiscing in nineteen eighty four, I put ten dollars of petrol in had no cash cards when invented, yet left my cassette collection till the next day. Oh there you guys. Well, I was reading, as I say, on the Advertiser, their reporting that the FPOs are down at some OTRs, and I thought, well, what would happen in that situation? Apparently they're just turning people away if they're not paying cash. But yeah, I always wonder what would happen if you'd filled your car up and you were the first person that got to the register to work out that it wasn't working. I guess you'd have to leave your details, but I think you do.
00:51:40
Speaker 17: Do you leave your details and they.
00:51:43
Speaker 15: Will chase you up, especial if you've killed the car completely full of petrol and had an empty cake to start with. But it does create that communication issue as well, where you know, someone's got to be communicating, you know, before they get to the petrol pump to feel up their car. That is cash shownly, certainly, I know something very minor, but we have a little school cafe on Fridays and our squares went down, you know what, one Friday morning, and we were because it's the school and it's raising money for the school. You know, we just took down people's names and email addresses and invoice them. But you know a lot of businesses on that day when square went down on that Friday, a lot of businesses lost a lot of money because they had to turn people away that couldn't pay in cash. And can you imagine if you were a bakery or something and it just stopped up on this with most enormous amount of crossics but not be able to sell them. It's quite problematic. We do need to work through some better, more practical solutions when things like this happened.
00:52:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, and Darren has a great question. He says, it's basically compulsory to have a bank account if you want to receive income. So if it's compulsory, why are we charged fees or why can't we claim the fees back at TAXI? I think it's a great question from Darren.
00:53:01
Speaker 15: It's a really good question you can chop around. That's the one thing I would say. There are some accounts out there. I've literally just spent half the day to day looking at transaction accounts, so you're asking me on a good date. But there are a number of accounts that don't charge those ADMIN fees or they waive them if you meet the criteria such as putting your salary in each month. There are also a very small number of banks that will refund at M fees if you put your card into a terminal that you might not be supported by your bank. You know, you can often get hit with a two, three, even four dollar fee. But I do know that iron G and mccruary they refund those fees at IRONG. I think it's only up to five per month, but I think McCrory might be unlimited.
00:53:51
Speaker 17: I'd have to double check that.
00:53:52
Speaker 19: But there are you know.
00:53:53
Speaker 15: The bottom line is the good part about our banking system is that there is a lot of competition out there. If you want something very specific, hopefully you can find it because there's a lot of choice out there, which is you know, it's healthy and it's good.
00:54:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, right, that is good to know. I didn't know there were banks that refund you the ATM fees, so that is good to know. Sally. It's always fun to chat. I always learned something, so thank you so much for your time.
00:54:22
Speaker 2: I think I always learned something from you.
00:54:23
Speaker 17: Tuesday, my pleasure.
00:54:26
Speaker 1: That's good. We make a great team. Thanks you do, Sally Tindle. There can start Data Insights Director. It's seventeen past two here on five double. I will take some calls next. Maybe you've got some thoughts on cash list society. Let me know if you carry cash with you, or maybe you'd like to talk about housing as we were talking about earlier. South Australia is behind on its target to meet the world it's quarterly target at least to meet the National Accord. The overall target is not until twenty twenty nine. But it's not a good sign if we're behind on our earlier targets, So let me know what you think. Eight double two.
00:55:00
Speaker 4: Three double O double O five double A afternoons with Stacey.
00:55:05
Speaker 1: Lee twenty one past two here on five double A. Your calls now A double two three double O double Oh is the number? Marty is in Saulisbury heights him Marty Oh.
00:55:16
Speaker 20: Yes, Stacy Leo. I just just want to give people a bit of a heads up. I've been having a bit of a think about this on street parking. I'll just give you a scenario. A guy with a club sport parks his car just on the edge of his drive. He didn't actually put it away in his car his garage. Somebody caused a fair bit of damage on his vehicle, but unfortunately for the said gentleman with about eight thousand dollars worth the damage on his car. And a lot of people do this. They tick on their insurance policy when they first start up with your cabb be garage off the roads. Now, I don't know if you're aware of, but certain suburbs have a premium, quite a high premium on insurance, especially when the roads are very now etc. Now, if people check that they park their car night or there's garage at night. Obviously that's safe and secure. But if an insurance accessor comes around and checks to see why was your car parked on the street should have been in the garage, I'm not sure how he had a hell of a fight on his hands with that one, but the insurances so when he came there, pointed out to him, you're one of the lucky ones that your cars not full up with everything else, because if you actually say that your car is going to be garaged and you don't have the capacity full of junk, etc. And people are going to find out that the insurance claims are going to be void. So in other words, people need to pay attention. So if you've got this automatic tick box going on, and everybody likes to save a little bit of money on their insurance, and there's quite a saving on a premium if your car is going to be safely secured or locked up, especially if it's an eighty five thousand dollar club sport. So I just want to let people know that if you've got four cars in your family and you've picked you've got a garage, but you're not putting it in there and it's full of stuff, you might find come the time where you're going to make a claim on your vehicle that they will actually avoid your insurance. So I just thought I would let you know and the listeners know about that, because trust me, insurance will use any excuse not to pay you.
00:57:28
Speaker 1: Ah, they absolutely will. They'll try and get every dollar out of you. You just mentioned how high premiums are at the moment, and you better believe if the insurance companies think that they can squeeze a little bit more out of you by not paying out a claim, they absolutely will appreciate their heads up, Marty, thank you for that. It's not something I'd thought of before, but I guess it makes sense when you put it that way. Let's go to green with now. Good afternoon, Darcy.
00:57:56
Speaker 21: Hello, Hello, thanks for having the call.
00:57:59
Speaker 2: Thank you all the developments and stuff.
00:58:02
Speaker 21: It just baffles me that no party is on the forefront of the infrastructure. So Curtis when they've announced the other week with Monopara, Curtis Road is an absolute shamuzzle to try and get on and off of with all the roundabouts and stuff, and then they're going to inject another whole heap of houses there, but haven't had the foresight to go well, actually, the two schools in Monopara at the moment capacity so where are the extra kids going to go attend school? Are they going to build it? No announcement yet to say that there's a new school getting developed. No announcement to fix Curtis Road, so then the traffic can actually bear the extra workload. And then in Greenwith at the moment in Salisbury Heights there's a big development going up with a whole lot of houses. But again Target Hill Road doesn't really have the capacity to handle that, and the bottleneck onto Main North Road is again that's your mozzle.
00:59:04
Speaker 1: You yeah, it's and it's such a problem. I mean, I know, we all know we need more houses, but you're right, it's the infrastructure around those houses. That's why houses take so long to build, because of the the labor shortages and the delays with approvals and stuff like that. But then once you do start to build houses, you're right, Schools get full, hospitals get full, roads get blocked up and start to fall apart and there's no money left to fix them. You know, the Lyle McEwan Hospital, there's always people there. I think there's still issues with ramping at the lal Mac and if there's a new big development at Manapara, what's that going to mean for pressure on the hospital as well as the schools. It's it needs to be a holistic approach, that's for sure. Darcy, thank you so much for the call.
00:59:54
Speaker 9: Today.
00:59:55
Speaker 1: You too, that's Darcy in Green with there and yeah, look governments know this, but obviously it's harder to have a holistic approach, takes more time, takes more money. Why do that when you can just announce bigger garages? Eight double two to three double o double oh is the number to call. A little bit of breaking news for you. PERSA has announced that there's been a Queensland fruitfly outbreak and has declared an area around glynd after maggots were discovered in home grown peaches. So there's been a bit of an exclusion zone setup and residents in the area are being urged not to remove their homegrown fruit and vegetables from their properties. Departments from the Person Department will be staff rather from the Person Department will be visiting households in the area to apply an organic bait to the trees there to the foliage and also check any fruits for signs of fruit fly, including maggots. So if you have fruit trees and you're in that Glynnd area, I'm looking at the map now. It takes in parts of Painum, South, Trinity Gardens, Saint Morris, furl Felix, Stowe, Royston Park, Paynham, Marden, Tranmere and parts of Hectorville as well. If you're in that area, it's worth going on the PERSA website to have a look. If you're affected, and if you do have fruit trees in your backyard, seek some advice from PERSA and they should be coming around to put some baits and check your fruit. But definitely don't remove any homegrown fruit from the property because, as always with fruitfly, we don't want it to spread. This is the crucial time to try and contain it and then attack it. All right, it's time for the two thirty news headlines now and after that entertainment news with Shane A. Bassett. We're talking new releases at their cinemas and on your streaming services. So if you want something to watch over the long weekend, Shane's got it for you.
01:01:57
Speaker 4: Five Double A Afternoon Swift Stacey.
01:02:01
Speaker 1: Twenty eight to three here on five double A thank you for your company this afternoon. I'm Stacey Lee with you on this cloudy day in Adelaide. Morgan pump is at the Bureau of Meteorology.
01:02:13
Speaker 22: Hello, Morgan, Hey, there's Stacy.
01:02:16
Speaker 1: It feel like it's been threatening to rain all day. Will will we get any any rate at all?
01:02:23
Speaker 22: Look, I think it's mostly just the cloud overhead at the moment. I'm not gonna say it definitely won't happen, but otherwise I think it's just a little bit of those now South Wesley winds just making it feel like it could be damp as we get through the rest of today. But I think we have mostly passed our period of seeing those showers for today, but otherwise still plenty of cloud overheads. So again, I definitely won't say nothing will fall whatsoever. But otherwise, even if anything does fall, it's probably may not even that be enough to put the windscreenwipers on the car or even need to take the washing in off the line.
01:02:59
Speaker 1: Okay, And then will the clouds hang around for the long weekend or will the sun come back out?
01:03:05
Speaker 22: Look, the sun will come back out and we will be seeing some northerly winds and that change in wind direction as we get towards this Sunday especially and still continuing into the public holiday on Monday as well, so we will start to see that gradually increase in temperature into tomorrow as we get more sun in that sky above rather than all that cloud that we've had at four today. So while we've got twenty eight on the cards for tomorrow, with the minimum of fourteen we're expecting on Sunday, there's sixteen or thirty five and quite a warm night overnight Monday, with another hot day on the Monday as well.
01:03:40
Speaker 1: Sounds good, Morgan, Thank you, Sorry, Thanks Basie. That's Morgan pump Out from the Bureau of Meteorology. After three o'clock. It's Costbusters and today and speaking of clouds and sun and energy, we're talking about energy bills because I don't know about you, but for me, they're very hard to read and understand, and you might be like me. I'm on a time of day usage tariff, so I get charged a different rate when I'm using my power at different times of the day. Is that the best option? It is for some people and not for others, So we'll find out who it's suitable for and then who wouldn't benefit from a time of day use? Would you just be one of those people who might be benefiting from one set rate for the whole day. We'll talk to energy consumers Australia Liz Stevens, and she's got some tips for you on how to read your energy bill.
01:04:39
Speaker 18: Yeah.
01:04:40
Speaker 1: I'm going to need all the tips I can get, that's for sure. Twenty five to.
01:04:44
Speaker 23: Three Movies and Entertainments with Shane Abass.
01:05:02
Speaker 1: He is the movie analyst and joins you now Happy Thursday, Shane.
01:05:07
Speaker 3: Happy Thursday. Back to you, Stacey, and good afternoon everyone.
01:05:11
Speaker 1: And I should say, for a couple of days ago, Shane, happy birthday.
01:05:23
Speaker 3: Oh thanks, Yeah, I know I generally try and keep a low profile, but I am very happy that I share my birthday with Gina Davis, one of my favorite actors. So yeah, twenty first of January, which was Tuesday. I appreciate that, Stacey.
01:05:37
Speaker 18: Thank you.
01:05:38
Speaker 1: No, Well, you know everyone likes to celebrate their birthday in some way, even if it is just just at home. I'm not a big birthday person either. I don't like to go over the top.
01:05:47
Speaker 3: But oh, I'm sure you get spoiled from the husbands and family and friends.
01:05:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, lots of cuddles from the doggie.
01:05:56
Speaker 16: Yeah.
01:05:56
Speaker 3: And there's nothing better than selling in with a good movie or something, a nice dinner, that kind of thing, just keeping it low key.
01:06:02
Speaker 1: Yes, dinner and a movie. But I know how you'll be celebrating this week, well today, at least OSCAR nominations tonight. Is that your kind of celebration?
01:06:14
Speaker 2: Sure is?
01:06:16
Speaker 3: They got delayed, they were the extensions for the voting by the Academy members was extended, and also the announcements are today. They were meant to be last week because of the fires, they were put back, but tonight are around midnight. I absolutely cannot wait. They'll be announcing the ninety seventh Academy Award nominations, and I hope that some Ozzies get nominated. I think our best stats will be either Guy Pierce or Nicole Kidman. Guy Pierce is in The Brutalist and Nicole Kidman is in the movie called Baby Girl, so both of them are pretty good chances. But Conclave is going to be my pick to win quite a lot and get nominated for a few too, So we'll see.
01:07:02
Speaker 1: Oh yes, this is the one we were talking about Last Week.
01:07:05
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I can't. I can't recommend it enough. And there's another one called Amelia Amelia Perez, which is also extremely fantastic, and Anora about a young girl who gets married on a whim and then the family of her new husband comes over and tries to get an annulled. There's some really interesting movies this year, and I know there's a mixed bag that's going to get nominated tonight. Can't wait?
01:07:30
Speaker 1: All right, Okay, looking forward to breaking it all down with you once it's announced. Let's talk about some new releases, because there's one out at the cinemas at the moment. A complete unknown Ercina wants to hear when you can't roll last month?
01:07:47
Speaker 15: Well, I like your songs.
01:07:49
Speaker 18: With the wins hit heavy on the boodline?
01:07:54
Speaker 4: Who wrote this mn me?
01:07:58
Speaker 1: How about that John Bees?
01:08:01
Speaker 15: She's pretty sounds, Pretty Wars, maybe a little two Pretty love who signs are like an oil painting and the dentist's office.
01:08:11
Speaker 1: You're kind of an asshole, Bob if.
01:08:13
Speaker 4: You go now.
01:08:18
Speaker 1: So it's the story of Bob Dylan.
01:08:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, it's a story of the early part of Bob Dylan's career when he first went to New York. He was about nineteen twenty years old, had nothing but a guitar and ended up making some contacts. And then he's a parents. You know, I guess not his physicality, but his talent was just there to be seen for everybody. And Timothy challo May plays the young Bob Dylan. And I've got to admit I'm not a Bob Dylan sort of aficionado or fan of his music. It's just not my style. But two things are going for this movie and really captivated my attention. Timothy challo May plays all the musical instrum himself and sings. And also it's just opened my eyes to how good the lyrics and he's just association with the people around him and how he can transfer that him to songs. So it opened my eyes to Bob Dylan and made me appreciate him a lot more.
01:09:19
Speaker 1: Yeah, right, Timothy Chalom, I actually don't know too much about it. He's not actually a singer though, is he. He's an assle.
01:09:26
Speaker 3: Oh yes, you mustn't have seen Wonka. He played Willie Wonker, all singing, all dancing. He's a he's he's still a young, but he's been around for a million decade now. He's been doing a lot of selective movies. He's already been nominated for an Oscar and he knew about this role. I think about three years ago I was told that James Mangold, the director, basically tapped him on the shoulder and said, look, I want you to play Bob Dylan in this movie that I'm preparing. So he had three years is to perfect the voice, the style, the walk, the way he talks and sings, and it's a remarkable feat. But the director, James Mangold, he has done the same thing before with a movie called Walk the Line, and Joaquin Phoenix played Johnny Cash and did the same thing, played the musical instruments in saying himself. So he's in good hands with this director. And I think Timothy shall May will be one of those nominated at the Oscars tonight.
01:10:27
Speaker 1: All Right. The only thing I know about him is he's dating Kylie Jenner, one of the Kardashians. That's my limited.
01:10:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, he's got boyish looks. He's in June, the June movies of course.
01:10:40
Speaker 1: Yeah.
01:10:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, he was in a very good movie called Ladybird, which was with Sirsharona and that was directed by Greta Gerwick.
01:10:50
Speaker 16: Yeah.
01:10:50
Speaker 3: So he's been around, but just in smaller, selective movies most of the time, a lot of art house stuff. But he's well respected and I think he's terrific as Bob Dylan.
01:11:02
Speaker 1: Okay, Now, the next one we're talking about is on Netflix. We've briefly touched on it last week before it was actually released, and it's been on my list to watch. I'll probably get to it on over the long weekend. It's called Back in Action. Here's some of the trailer.
01:11:18
Speaker 4: And can we please get something to eat? You look right of here?
01:11:22
Speaker 6: Do you guys running grass with snacks?
01:11:23
Speaker 4: Right in and out? Bring the change by some eminems? Go Wayne, did you see one?
01:11:41
Speaker 9: Just saw it?
01:11:42
Speaker 1: Did you see what we just did? So this is the one with Cameron Diaz?
01:11:49
Speaker 3: Yes? And was it worth the way eleven years to see Cameron back in a movie. Well, as with most movies that are direct to Netflix, they're entertaining. They quite moved quite fast, you don't have to think too much about them.
01:12:03
Speaker 8: And I liked it.
01:12:04
Speaker 3: I think she's got awesome chemistry with Jamie Fox and the kids. The actors that play the kids, that four of them were all good together. But Netflix have this thing they'll throw a lot of money to get actors into the movies, but then they don't worry about plot. And it's so generic and so formulated, and the thing is Stacey. I still liked it, Like I'm not writing it off. It's just I've seen it all before. Mister and Missus smith by Kids Keeping Up with the Joneses is another one that reminded me of But it's still fun. And if you're looking for something and no brain basically to watch over the weekend, you could go worse than this Back in Action.
01:12:45
Speaker 1: It's not a thinking movie. You're not going to be surprised by anything in the plot.
01:12:49
Speaker 3: It's c no, like there's sort of supposed to be this twist in it. And again, I don't want to give anything way, but I knew within like fifteen minutes of and it started what was going to happen. And I know that I do to take a lot of notice of things whenever I do watch movies. But yeah, you don't have to think too hard. But I've got to say that Cameron Dias, it's just amazing. She's funny, doesn't miss the beat, and she has some great one liners.
01:13:16
Speaker 18: Yeah.
01:13:17
Speaker 1: I saw I was watching the trailer and thought, yeah, this it sounds like sort of mindless entertainment for the long what. You could watch it with the family. You could sit down with your parents, you could sit down with the kids, and everyone would get something out of it.
01:13:33
Speaker 6: Yeah.
01:13:34
Speaker 3: And it's interesting because it's a culture clash too, because the kids are so young. You know, there's a teenager and then there's a under she's he's probably about eight or nine years old. There's that clash of the generation X to their kids and what they did and didn't do. And yeah, that works too, the generational comedy side of it. Yeah, it all works for me. But it's one of those forgettable films. Once it was over, you're not talking about it, you know, for years and years to come.
01:14:05
Speaker 18: That's for sure.
01:14:06
Speaker 1: Won't be nominated tonight in the Oscars when they're released.
01:14:09
Speaker 3: Nah, it's not going to. Unfortunately, I think if it was a popularity movie, because I know Netflix will say, oh, it's the number one viewsed movie on Netflix this week. But Netflix have a thing that you only need to have the movie playing for about ten fifteen minutes and then it registers that you've watched the whole thing, So it actually if you don't like the movie and you turn it off, it's still registered that you've watched it still registers.
01:14:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah, I didn't realize that. How funny. All right, Well, in a moment, we'll talk about The Girl in the Pool, which is another new release. And then I thought I might get your tips for the long weekend, Shane, do you have any ossy movies that you're recommending if we if we.
01:14:50
Speaker 3: Have some extra Love Australian filmed, Yeah.
01:14:53
Speaker 1: All right, sounds good. We'll talk about it in a minute.
01:14:55
Speaker 4: Five double Afternoon Swiss Stay twelve to three five double A.
01:15:00
Speaker 1: We're in the middle of movies and entertainment news with Shane A. Massett and if you have something that you've been watching lately or a recommendation for the long weekend, we'd love to hear it. Eight double two three double O double Oh. And Laurie in Hendon has called Hello, Laurie.
01:15:18
Speaker 6: How are you safety good?
01:15:19
Speaker 1: Thank you?
01:15:21
Speaker 6: A couple of weeks ago you recommended Black Snow.
01:15:24
Speaker 1: Oh yes, what do you think?
01:15:26
Speaker 13: Yeah?
01:15:26
Speaker 6: Oh, unbelievable. Me and my wife bingched it the first season last Sunday, and yeah, just a few things like you know the old cop. Yes, yeah, they they left it open. I reckon with it. He was turning turning a blind eye to what was happening, or he was just a dumb country cop like I don't know. Like it makes you think, because he was saying, on it's the guy in the car with the white door.
01:16:03
Speaker 1: Don't give anything away, Laurie.
01:16:05
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, but yeah, I won't give anything away. I won't give anything there. But that just stuff like that. Yeah, it intrigued us both. And now we've started watching the second season and we're up to date with the second season. But na compelling, compelling series, and that for mel guy. He's a great actor.
01:16:24
Speaker 1: He is, isn't he. Oh good, I'm glad you're enjoying it. We just watched the new episode of season two last night as well, and I'm really into it.
01:16:31
Speaker 6: It's really Yeah, it's great. Thanks a lot, No, thank you.
01:16:35
Speaker 1: I'd love to hear the feedback. Appreciate it.
01:16:38
Speaker 6: That's okay, see ya, see ya.
01:16:40
Speaker 1: That's Laurie in Hendon. Shane. I can't remember have you watched Black Snow?
01:16:46
Speaker 3: I haven't yet Funnily enough, I was talking about it with someone else this morning and I was a bit worried that Laurie There was going to spoil it for me. It's I really like Travis Famel as Laurie was just saying, great actor being around for a while now. But this is a solid it's a Cold Case show from what I've been told and the eclips I've seen that I'll have to get on it because yeah, it's just I guess one of those Australian shows I should be watching.
01:17:15
Speaker 1: And you know what it is. I actually forgot until I was just talking to Laurie There that it's an Australian show, an Australian cop drama.
01:17:23
Speaker 20: Did you forget?
01:17:25
Speaker 16: Okay?
01:17:25
Speaker 1: I mean it's not in your face. We're not like walking through the outback and yeah, may Crocodile Dundee here is a north It's it's just a good cop drama based on Cold Case. And yeah, now that I think about it, it's Aussie cops. They look ouzzy, they sound Aussie. It's it's Australian, but it's as good as like a British cop drama. And you know how much I love my British cop drama.
01:17:48
Speaker 3: Oh well, if you can watch a series and it doesn't you know, it doesn't matter about accents or what you know surroundings in that and just get involved in the storyline. The filmmakers are doing something right. Yeah, yeah, no, I look forward to it. But it looks very Queensland from the clips. Lots of cane cane fields and yeah, hot weather.
01:18:07
Speaker 12: But I have to get on it.
01:18:09
Speaker 1: Yep, yep, you will when you've when you've got time. I know how busy you are, watching watching everything for us, and you've been watching something on a streaming platform. It's a new movie that you can rent and and buy on digital platforms. It's called The Girl in the Pool.
01:18:25
Speaker 3: Dad, everything's fine.
01:18:26
Speaker 4: Are you and mom like getting a divorce? So your mother and I love each other very much?
01:18:30
Speaker 3: Can you just breathe?
01:18:32
Speaker 4: Everything's sleep.
01:18:34
Speaker 3: Are you talking to yourself or your mistress?
01:18:37
Speaker 14: I see you, but I'm just waiting for you to slip.
01:18:39
Speaker 13: We're just getting towels to go to poor don't touch that.
01:18:43
Speaker 4: You're hiding something, timy or where were you at earlier today? I've been watching you on You can all be her shoulder.
01:18:48
Speaker 3: Amen, I'm Kevin, I'm just trying to find my wife. I was able to get into uber account and the last location she came to was here, but her phone.
01:18:56
Speaker 4: Keeps going to voicemail.
01:18:57
Speaker 23: You're just trying to see you up start and admit to my daughter what you're really upset about it?
01:19:04
Speaker 4: And I fixed this.
01:19:13
Speaker 1: Oh I can't. I couldn't see the vision obviously, but I feel like I know where it's going.
01:19:18
Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, The Girl on the Pool is definitely the movie of the week. I recommend this as number one for the week. Now picture this. He had a married man having an affair. He's played by Predy Freddie Prince Jr. The true pretty truty actor, and then all of a sudden, the person he's having an affair with is in the swimming pool, face down and has passed away. Then he can't remember what's happened, and all of a sudden, his wife is throwing a surprise birthday party at his house and it's full of people, so he has the one figure out what actually happened and to hide the body and hopefully no one will see it. It's it's like he's and then he's paranoid, so he doesn't know whether he's being set up. And he's a married Philander as for a start, so he's already a bit worried that he's going to get caught. But then is this body that he has to deal with as well. And it's really quite interesting and it's sort of funny as well. It's ironically funny, but it's also a thriller. And then it just moves and moves and moves quite fast until you might not guess what's going to happen on this one. It's really good.
01:20:27
Speaker 1: Okay, so part of it sounds almost comical. Is it a black comedy or it's not.
01:20:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's set up as not so much a satire, but it's set up as quite dark comedy because again, his memory is you don't understand why he's got a memory loss. It's not really explained its first, but it's the little clues that are peppered around along the way, little flashbacks. I really like how it's structured this movie, and it's not a big budget or anything. Monica Potter, it plays the wife Freddie Prince Junior's wife in this and they were in a movie in two thousand and one, so that's twenty four years ago called Head over Heels, so they're old friends. They've been reunited in it, like I thought was good. But yeah, The Girl in the Pool. It's on demand so you can hire, either rent it or buy.
01:21:14
Speaker 7: It on digital platforms.
01:21:15
Speaker 3: It's a good film and it's directed by Dakota Gorman, who female director that's got a long career ahead of I really liked the previous movie, so yeah, this.
01:21:27
Speaker 11: Was a good one, too awesome.
01:21:28
Speaker 1: Okay, I'll add it to the list. We have a couple of people on the text line. One's asking where to watch Black Snow. It's on stan and this person says, I'm up to date with season two and it's so so good. So there you go, Mike as well. So as if you ever get the chance to watch a film called The Garden with Peter Sellers and Shirley maclain, it'll brighten your day. Have you seen that one?
01:21:50
Speaker 12: Oh?
01:21:51
Speaker 3: I like Shirley McClain. She's still alive too. She's one of the few remaining actors from the golden years of Hollywood. She's been for such a long time now.
01:22:01
Speaker 1: Great Jared in morphort Vale has called in a double two three, double O double.
01:22:06
Speaker 11: Oh Hello, Jared afternoon. All, I won the tickets from Shane last week to see Wolfman, so I was just ringing to say thank you and also to give a review.
01:22:15
Speaker 5: Oh, go for it.
01:22:17
Speaker 11: Thank you Shange for the tickets.
01:22:20
Speaker 3: At all.
01:22:21
Speaker 11: No worries good movies in my life and Wolfman is definitely not on that list.
01:22:29
Speaker 22: Yeah.
01:22:29
Speaker 3: I know I was giving tickets away, but I didn't endorse the movie completely.
01:22:34
Speaker 11: I'm aware of that.
01:22:36
Speaker 8: But no, it was it was just it was wrong on so many levels. Yeah, yeah, a little bit, yes, very unnecessary.
01:22:46
Speaker 1: But anyway, for the ticket, you still you still had a had a night out or a day out and got that was good exactly. Well, thanks for calling, Jared, and I appreciate it for you. He's still still grateful for the tickets. Shane.
01:23:02
Speaker 3: Oh, I love honesty. I'm honest when I review films too, of it, you know. Yeah, He's right. Yeah, not for everyone, and that's still unnecessary. And it's like it's flopped at the box office. It's absolutely flopped, so that you know they'll make they'll probably fast track it to streaming on demand and make their money back that way.
01:23:24
Speaker 1: God, okay, yeah, I'll end up watching it on Netflix in a year's time and go that's right.
01:23:28
Speaker 3: That was that one.
01:23:29
Speaker 1: That was that one that Jared and Shane didn't love. All right, before I let you go Australia Day Long Weekend, we've been talking about Black Snow or good Aussie drama. It's on stand at the moment. But you've got some classic Ossie movie suggestions for us to watch. Don't have a heap of time before the news, but I know you've got some in your head.
01:23:49
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I'll just quickly tell you this because they change every year. But I love recommending the original Mad Max from nineteen seventy nine, Just absolutely love that film, The Dish from two thousand, true story with Sam Nehill. Classic movie The Royal Hotel, which has only had a few years ago, a true story about backpackers who do some work at an out back pubs and then get into trouble.
01:24:11
Speaker 1: I totally recommend here in South Australia.
01:24:14
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, exactly, Yeah, and based on a true story which was a documentary as well. Julia Ghana. Yeah, so that's the Royal Hotel. If you haven't seen a Hugo weeding is the hotel of the publican and you're Despicable and then finally one Low people don't know about. Tony Collet's in it, Russell Crowe's in it, then Mendelssohn's in it. Anthony Hopkins came to Australia.
01:24:38
Speaker 15: The film it.
01:24:39
Speaker 3: It's a comedy called Spotswood from nineteen ninety one. It's basically about an efficiency expert. He comes over to check out the company he owns and yeah, he's a bit of a clash of cultures, a British guy and the Australian Alericanism that he has to deal with in a factory.
01:25:00
Speaker 11: Yeah.
01:25:00
Speaker 3: A lot of young cast there, I mean, Russell Crowe and Rebecca Riggan, Dan Wiley, Tony Collector're all very young in this but great film.
01:25:08
Speaker 1: A great Shane, love your work. Thank you so much for your recommendations. And have a great weekend.
01:25:16
Speaker 3: Thank you, Stacy, I have. Everyone has a space long weekend, Happy Australia, you too.
01:25:20
Speaker 1: That's Shane A. Bassett, the movie Analyst. Time for the three o'clock news now and after that, Costbusters. We're talking about your energy bill. Are you on a time of day tariff or do you just have one fee that you're charged to use your power. It might be worth reconsidering. We'll tell you who should rethink their plans.
01:25:40
Speaker 4: Five double A afternoon Swiss Stacey.
01:25:43
Speaker 1: Lee, twenty three past three here on five double A and we are in the middle of Costbusters talking about your electricity bill with Liz Stevens from Energy Consumers Australia. And we're getting a couple of calls, so let's go to them. Maria is in Forest Rangehi, Hi Stacey.
01:26:02
Speaker 24: Just a quick one without notice about titles for women. Oh yes, it should be just miss and missus. For the ones that want moves, well they can, you know, drop off the planet. Now back to electricity.
01:26:16
Speaker 1: Oh Maria, can I just say I don't think it's people that want mess They're told to do that after they get divorced. Yeah.
01:26:23
Speaker 24: Well I was never divorced. I was a missus and every time in a government department they would put mis and I would jump up and down and say, I'm not a merve, I'm a missus, thank you very much. But they didn't like that. But you know me, I'm a little bit impenuated or a lot of pinuated.
01:26:46
Speaker 1: That's what we love.
01:26:48
Speaker 24: In regards to electricity time as they use demand peak off peak stacy. Look, we have one hundred and twelve point nine one percent of renewable energy ESUS comes from research. South Australia has gone from zero to one hundred and twelve point nine percent in twenty years. We have self dependence with twenty five percent exportative Victorias rooftop solar produces more than enough electricity for our use. And electricity electorate polleys that actually lie to us and undermined our power will leave our country poorer. They deliver exorbitant expensive prices, unreliable energy for foreign raiders, profiteering on mom and dads and singles backs. Why switch off electricity? Why hotel electricity? And send the prices through the roof to fourteen hundred dollars per killer watch and instead of giving South Australians the incentive for free power for all.
01:28:06
Speaker 18: Of us, not just a few.
01:28:09
Speaker 1: I thank you for your thoughts, Maria. We are we are taking some questions this half hour, but I do appreciate the statement there. Thank you so much for calling eight double two three double o double Oh. Let's go to John in Tranmere. Hi, John, do you have a question about your electricity bill?
01:28:24
Speaker 20: Ladies? Look you may have answered this already.
01:28:26
Speaker 12: I've got a cyst a battery.
01:28:29
Speaker 10: Should it be so self powered or time based control?
01:28:32
Speaker 1: Oh, Liz Stevens from Energy Consumers Australia, what do you have any thoughts on that?
01:28:38
Speaker 14: That's when I'm probably not qualified to answer without seeing your battery and knowing a whole lot more about your circumstances. But look, I can we can if you want to leave you an email afterwards, maybe we can give some general advice on that.
01:28:54
Speaker 1: And John I can. I can put you in touch with Eddie May from n RG Solo. They're all all across the batteries, especially the Tesla batteries, so we can put you in touch there as well and see between Liz and Eddie hopefully we can get you an answer.
01:29:08
Speaker 12: Thanks Ada, thank you.
01:29:09
Speaker 1: Thank you, thanks for the call. Let's go to Edwin in Campbelltown.
01:29:14
Speaker 10: Hi Edwin, Hello Stacey. I trying to make a comment about my own experience with SOLA. I had Solo installs on our place a few years ago and I was charging me lots of money. I don't know why, but I had to get rid of it.
01:29:29
Speaker 1: But I find that now.
01:29:31
Speaker 10: All I'm doing now is I'm just paying by installments, and I'm paying. I'm not worried about you the cost now, but I'm just saying that everything is expensive now, not just the electricity but everything, so you know, we have to get used to it. But I also I think we're putting out too many carved into one box regarding solar, and I think there should be a bit of an ergy mix. And because solah is not that cheap, the sub cheap at all, it's expensive.
01:29:57
Speaker 1: Okay, thanks for the call, Edwin, thanks for your thought thoughts. Let's go to Trevor in Old Ranella.
01:30:02
Speaker 16: Hey, Trevor, Yeah, Hi Stacey. Stacey. Just a question for those that are shift workers, and I appreciate you talking about time of usage. For those that have a rotational shift, the energy companies don't account for that. I think they've got a fixed sort of time of use of day and night. But for someone that works day shift, afternoonshift and night shift, their usage is well, quite frankfully all over the place. But should the energy companies take something like that indoor camp. As a shift worker, I could provide Okay, here's my roster. You provide an energy plan because this is what my life is all of that out.
01:31:00
Speaker 3: Oh, that's true.
01:31:02
Speaker 1: That sounds like an ideal world. I guess the prices are set on They probably set it on demand, Liz, you'll probably know better than me more more as over the price that they buy it for. But they would set the prices based on demand, right. Is that why the peak is six pm when everyone gets home and that's the peak usage.
01:31:22
Speaker 14: Yes, predominantly on demand, and there's a range of other things there, Trevor, are you finding that you're paying like a lot more because you can't shift the time that you're giving new energy.
01:31:38
Speaker 16: Because popping people are up and about and putting on their washing machines and dishwashers, et cetera, et cetera. I would be asleep, and I appreciate with most modern appliances you can set and forget those. That's fine. But the star as my showering habits ETCC dish washing habits are absolutely out of whack with someone that works nine to five, which is when they get their cheapest thing, and that's for us. Maybe pair companies need to take that in the consideration because we have an enormous shift working working population in Australia.
01:32:20
Speaker 12: Good line's out of Australia.
01:32:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, and especially at the moment with more flexible working arrangements, there's actually more people opting not to work nine to five. They'd rather do an early morning shift or a nighttime shift because it makes their home life a bit easier. Thanks for the call, Trevor, really appreciate it, and Liz, thank you so much for your time today. It seems like there's a lot of people if we struggle to understand our bills. But I might look into it and see if I can work out. Maybe time of use is not for me, Maybe I should go on a fixed tariff. We'll see if I can work that out.
01:32:55
Speaker 14: You can go on Energy Made Easy the website, or don't be afraid to call your retailers. Well, well, your retailer has to tell you what the best plan that you could be on is and they've.
01:33:05
Speaker 17: Got an obligation to help you if you're struggling with your bill.
01:33:08
Speaker 1: Yes, good advice. Energy made Easy. I've almost forgot about it, but I used that website every six months to check my bills and it's quite easy to you. So if you haven't used it, I'd recommend going on Energymadeasy. Dot gov dot AU. Liz, thanks so much for your time. Talk to you soon.
01:33:23
Speaker 14: Thanks so much, Sophie.
01:33:24
Speaker 1: As Liz Stevens there from Energy Consumers Australia, it is time for the three thirty news now and after that, should we get rid of miss missus and miss for women? Men just get one? Mister? Should women just have one?
01:33:39
Speaker 3: Eight?
01:33:39
Speaker 1: Double two three double.
01:33:40
Speaker 4: O double O five double A afternoon Swiss Stacey le twenty five to four here on five double A.
01:33:49
Speaker 1: Paula has sent us a text and she wants to know the name of the mini series about the man who had the affair with the woman and then he finds her dead body floating in his pook. Paula. We were talking about this earlier with Shane Bassett. It's a movie. It's called The Girl in the Pool and you can rent it and buy it on digital platforms at the moment, so I think usually you can go on even YouTube or just google the Girl in the Pool movie and it should come up. But it's not available on a streaming website for free yet. It's one of those ones that you need to rent or buy. So I hope you enjoy it. I hope you can find it there you go, okay. Well, over time, language changes, some of it loses its relevancy, and meanings change and we have new words that emerge. What do you think about women's titles? Is it antiquated to still have three different options if you're a woman, miss if you're not married, missus if you're married, and miss if you're divorced. Why do we need them? For men? It's pretty easy. You feel out a form and you're a mister. Whether you're married, whether you're divorced, whether you're single, it doesn't matter. So why does it matter for women? Let's have this discussion. Would you like to see it simplified or are you a traditionalist and you want to keep it? Lee on the text line, says Hi Stacy, get rid of it. My opinion, it's no one's business. I am a miss. No, I haven't been divorced. YESLEI, I am with you on that. And then we have Adam, leave our gendered language alone. This is typical lefties again, Adam, there's nothing political about this. You can have your gendered language, but it's easy for you because you're a mister. Has anyone ever asked you what your title is?
01:35:38
Speaker 3: No?
01:35:39
Speaker 1: I don't think they have eight double two three double o double.
01:35:42
Speaker 7: Oh.
01:35:43
Speaker 1: I'd love to get your thoughts on this. Let's talk about it with Sarah Blake. She's a conflict strategist and mediator.
01:35:49
Speaker 17: Hello, Sarah Jday.
01:35:51
Speaker 5: How are you going?
01:35:52
Speaker 15: Lord?
01:35:53
Speaker 19: How are you?
01:35:54
Speaker 24: Yeah?
01:35:54
Speaker 17: Yeah, Look, it's such a good conversation. In fact, such a good conversation. I had it with my son yesterday.
01:36:00
Speaker 1: Oh how old's your son?
01:36:02
Speaker 17: He's twelve? Right, And it's one of those sort of things that don't really come up in conversation. We don't talk about, hey, how do we lay with ourselves?
01:36:09
Speaker 11: Very often?
01:36:10
Speaker 17: And I think because of the politics. It led to a conversation with him and he's like, why does it even matter?
01:36:16
Speaker 3: Mom? You just you know, like, why, great question.
01:36:21
Speaker 1: I love talking to kids about things like this because their perspectives on it are so I don't want to say simple and it come across in a bad way, but it is. Sometimes it is really simple. Kids are just like why does it matter? And You're like, that isn't a great question.
01:36:37
Speaker 17: They kind of just cut through it, don't they.
01:36:39
Speaker 3: Yeah?
01:36:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. So, because I think this is something that is actually introduced to us quite young because once you get into school you have teachers. And I really struggled with it at school, working out why it was miss ives and then why it was missus rollie, and then it gets explained to you and then you think, okay, so then there's all of the men are misters, so are they married or not? And you know your parents are like, well, that doesn't really matter for men.
01:37:08
Speaker 17: Yeah, it's so interesting. I don't think I ever had that explained to me as a kid, Like, I don't remember that conversation. I feel like it was just assumed we all knew and on the whole it was just missus unless it was an old spinster as that you never got married and it was missed, but spinster, that was your function back then. And I just think I don't know about you, but I remember as I transitioned from being you know, like in my early twenties, as I was getting a bit older and you're having to fill out more forms and what am I miss doesn't really sound right anymore. I'm not like a little kid, I'm grown up. How do we reflect that?
01:37:51
Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, well, Sue has sent a text. I see no need for a title at all, men or women the days of being embarrassed to be unmad married along gone. Miss was invented to supposedly save us the shame of being unmarried. Just call me Sue, please, yes, Sue.
01:38:09
Speaker 17: I think that's great that I do too.
01:38:13
Speaker 1: And there's another texture here, came through earlier. I'm just trying to find it here it is. I think it's in France, where all adult women, regardless of marital status, are referred to as missus. So that's interesting as well.
01:38:26
Speaker 17: It's really interesting and really interesting because in a particular region of France they remove the word mademoiselle for excuse my French, which is no good. But it's notion that you were a young woman and that they just made it generic. You are a woman. So I think that there is a lot going on that we just don't talk about.
01:38:45
Speaker 1: Absolutely. I've got one here. A young male is a master and a young female is a miss. I have never heard of a man being called referred to as a master.
01:38:56
Speaker 17: Or no, but maybe a young boy you're filling out a passport form or something like that. There's this transition that happens about eighteen, you know, become a man right and personally, I think I probably used myths when I didn't know any better, But as I started to learn more, I made a really conscious despite being married, I made a conscious decision. I used myths all the time unless I'm filling out a passport form where marital status sometimes matters in some countries.
01:39:28
Speaker 1: Yes, I do as well. I always use mis because I just don't care. Except sometimes if I feel like having a bit of fun and Lady is available in the drop down menu, I'll just do lady because I'm like, why does it matter? It doesn't matter if I'm a miss It doesn't matter if I'm a missus. Why does it matter if I'm a lady? I can be lady Lee.
01:39:46
Speaker 17: Look, I having, you know, knowing we were going to have this conversation and did a little bit of research around where does this language merge from? And it was really interesting to understand that missus or miss emerge from this notion of master and mistress. So it wasn't even about a status of are you married or not, but almost like an authority, and that in fact it came to be associated with almost a business woman like you were significant, you had control and some authority.
01:40:14
Speaker 1: Oh okay, so it wasn't about marital status at all in the beginning?
01:40:20
Speaker 25: No, And isn't that a great example of how meanings change and about intent? And I think that's the question around what is the intent in using it and is it relevant and needed?
01:40:30
Speaker 4: Now?
01:40:31
Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm getting a lot of texts from all men that probably won't surprise you, who are saying we don't need to change everything. This person says it hasn't mattered until now, Stacy, just leave it alone. This person says it's called the English language. Just leave it alone. As someone's being really derogatory towards women there, Dan in Port Clinton, you'll be blocked if you continue that, Dan. But there's a lot of people saying we don't need to change these things. But somewhere it changed along the line because it was never referred to as miss and missus as marital status.
01:41:12
Speaker 17: That's right. So things do change. And it's a great example of conversations that do lead to conflict because it's associated with identity and often power, and we don't really talk about how having to make a choice for indicated if you're married or not my impact how you feel. And you know, maybe it's been used as a respect title, but also it's there are lots of examples of the more you categorize. Are you a doctor, are you a miss?
01:41:40
Speaker 15: Or missus? Are you.
01:41:42
Speaker 16: Your honor?
01:41:44
Speaker 17: All of those of the stat of things helped gather data for marketing as well, so it can be usedful lots for different things.
01:41:50
Speaker 1: Right, Okay, we've got one here from Vicki and she says, good afternoon, Stacy. Regarding titles, I'm proudly a miss, having not nor want to be married. Government papers always address me as miss, and it makes me angry. I always cross out miss and insert miss. Young women are miss until married, not miss. Get it right, people, So this is important for some people because of that tradition that has come that miss is refers to someone who's unmarried, And for Vicki that's important.
01:42:20
Speaker 17: Yeah. Absolutely, And I think in all of this that the labels we use, you know, will matter to some people. It will matter a lot, and they'll feel very strongly about it. And sometimes I think we need to think about parking our judgment and why does it matter what someone else decides. If they want to do that, then that's fantastic. And if I want to do something different, is it harming the other person, that's not so it should be okay. So I think it's important to have the conversation to really dig down and say, hey, where does the history lay and what does it have meaning for me in this day and age.
01:42:55
Speaker 1: Is it about collecting data? Do these companies that ask does my doctors surge need to harvest my data? And oh she was single until four years ago, but now she's married.
01:43:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, look I don't.
01:43:08
Speaker 17: I think probably My guess is that they're just doing it automatically. It's become a habit and something that they do. And whether they actually use that data or not as a doctor surgery, probably not. But certainly, you know, I've seen some websites for shopping places, you know, certainly in the UK, where they go down to if you've been in the military, it might plug your military title, baronessa, you know, whatever that status you have, and so it goes right down into about twenty five different drop choices, and that's clearly been used to help them create niches in their marketing.
01:43:43
Speaker 1: Oh so when I book my flights under Lady Lee, they must think, oh, wow, we've got to We've got somewhat royal on the plane.
01:43:51
Speaker 17: Maybe it's an upgrade.
01:43:52
Speaker 1: Right, it's never led to any better treatments work so far.
01:43:58
Speaker 16: It's a optimist to keep hoping.
01:44:01
Speaker 1: I like this message from Dean good afternoon. We have an issue in our medical profession. Profession physicians are called doctors and surgeons are called mister. What so if there's a female surgeon, they're called a mister?
01:44:18
Speaker 24: Yes?
01:44:18
Speaker 17: Well, really interesting.
01:44:20
Speaker 10: I didn't know that.
01:44:21
Speaker 17: Well, I knew that they went doctor anymore, but I didn't know there was gender associated with it.
01:44:25
Speaker 1: Oh that's crazy.
01:44:27
Speaker 17: Yeah, isn't that so interesting?
01:44:30
Speaker 1: So can we talk about what some potential alternatives would be. What if we're just going to get rid of different titles for women and treat women like men. Oh, God, Heaven for good dare we what would what would we use? Would we'd keep mister for men, you'd have to keep doctor for doctors?
01:44:50
Speaker 17: Yeah, Look, you're in a status that's gravitates to them. I personally I like ms. And if if we go back to the roots of the meaning of the word originally, I think that more accurately reflects a gender well, you know, a mutual term for female sorry mister miss and doctor, or maybe to flee the blank box. So if people don't want to have a label, they don't have to have a label.
01:45:16
Speaker 1: Yes, I once asked because I was booking something on the phone and they said, oh, and your title and I said, oh, do you need it? And then there was this awkward silence and they said, yeah, so is it miss missus or miss And I said, does it matter? Can we just skip that part? And the poor receptionist, I don't know, she's just got me on a bad day, and she said, I actually can't go through with the form until I put something in. And I said, okay, just put doctor. And she was like, are you a doctor? And I'm like no, but I'd love to. So I just said just do miss I don't just put something in. Let's move on. But there are some forms where you have to put it in.
01:45:58
Speaker 16: Yes.
01:46:00
Speaker 17: I don't know about you, but there is this as a woman, there's this confusion. There's this sense of guilt. Am I doing the right thing? What is the right thing? What is the expectation? But we're having to process all of this and finding our own way through it. It's much simpler when you're a bloke and you say, hey, I'm missed it.
01:46:17
Speaker 1: It's just mister, and it doesn't good on you and you've never had to think about it or worry about it.
01:46:22
Speaker 17: Yeah, exactly right. Simplicity. I like simplicity. We've got enough stuff to worry about. I think without having a fight.
01:46:29
Speaker 8: About this, we do.
01:46:31
Speaker 1: We're getting a few calls on this, so I'll take some calls in just a moment. But I think this is almost text of the day from Simon. Hi, Stacy. Just to confuse your listeners, I'm going with Miss Simon.
01:46:43
Speaker 14: Love it.
01:46:45
Speaker 1: Miss Simon, thank you for the text. Sarah, thank you for your time today. Really appreciate it.
01:46:51
Speaker 17: My absolute pleasure. Good luck everyone, Good.
01:46:54
Speaker 1: Tark, thank you. That's Miss Sarah Blake, conflict strategist and mediator T two three double o double oh is the number to call?
01:47:03
Speaker 3: What do you think?
01:47:03
Speaker 1: Let's do a poll. Should we get rid of it? Is it antiquated? Should we ditch the miss missus miss for women and just have one like there is for men? Or are you a traditionalist? Would you like to keep it?
01:47:14
Speaker 16: And why?
01:47:15
Speaker 1: Eight? Double two to three double o, double oh.
01:47:17
Speaker 4: It's five double a afternoon, swift, Stacey Lee, good afternoon, it's eight minutes to four here on five double am, we're doing a pole eight double two to three double o double Oh?
01:47:29
Speaker 1: Should we get rid of miss missus and miss Is it antiquated to have such language? Who cares if you're married? Who cares if you're single? Who cares if you're divorced? Men have missed her? There's just one little option to pick in the drop down box. Should we get rid of it? Or are you a traditionalist and would like to keep it? Sue wants to get rid of it, Maria wants to keep it. Gabby on the text line, Shit, I'm married, so I'm a proudly missus. Gabby, so she's a proud missus. What about you?
01:47:56
Speaker 11: Joy?
01:47:56
Speaker 1: Hello, Hello?
01:47:59
Speaker 18: I wanted the old fashion ones. I want to be missus missus, and look this goes right back. I think I can remember when the first came in, which I think was somewhere in this nineteen sixty five seventy era, and all of a sudden, miss come in.
01:48:18
Speaker 17: And I was horrified.
01:48:20
Speaker 18: My husband thought it was a great joke, and I said, I refuse to open anything that's addressed.
01:48:26
Speaker 3: To move the bill right.
01:48:31
Speaker 18: But the problem was the first letter that I received under my name was the family allowance, and they had changed that already to missus. I had this one. I'm up a prize, a family allowance, but I still hate it.
01:48:48
Speaker 19: I will not use it.
01:48:49
Speaker 18: I am a proud missus and those days to be missus was you were proud, and I don't see that happening quite so much now. Good to independent.
01:49:04
Speaker 1: Thank you for the call. Appreciate it.
01:49:05
Speaker 20: Bye.
01:49:06
Speaker 1: See that's joy in Fulham. Oh here we go. Timmy's in the studio. Rowie and Timmy g are on after for mister g mister Jennifer, thank you very much.
01:49:18
Speaker 26: I actually liked it when I was a kid and used to get master.
01:49:21
Speaker 1: I only just found out today that that was a thing Master.
01:49:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I thought Master, what.
01:49:28
Speaker 1: Jack exactly?
01:49:30
Speaker 26: That was probably exactly.
01:49:32
Speaker 1: We've just got a call from Denise. You might go to Denise before we find out what's happening after four Hello Denise.
01:49:37
Speaker 19: Hello, Yes, my my take on it. When you're a little girl, you're a miss When you're a little boy, you're a master. When you grow up, you're a mister. When you get married, you're a missus. If you get divorced, unless you change your name back to your mind name. You are still a missus? Oh no, miss miss is nothing all right there go thank you for all I've been a missus. I've been both for forty years and yet I still have missus. Good good, and it's good for my children. We've all got the same name.
01:50:15
Speaker 4: Go you.
01:50:16
Speaker 19: Yeah, okay, thanks to appreciate thoughts.

01:50:43
Speaker 26: Hello, can I keep that for the rest of the you know, the week later forever?
01:50:48
Speaker 1: It's yours. We can just pick what we want now exactly.
01:50:50
Speaker 3: I'm just.
01:50:51
Speaker 1: I'm just I've picked lady whenever I book a flight, I'm a lady lady Lee, Yeah, lady, why not? It doesn't matter anyway? Who cares?
01:50:59
Speaker 26: Should We've got we've got an interesting show tonight. Because I think a lot of a lot of us woke up a little disappointed this morning. I was at the Adelaide United game, which looked like we were going to have this incredible last minute win and ended up being a last two second draw, so it was a bit of a bent. We're still top by it, but could have been four points instead of one point, but it was so close. So it was an exciting game there at Cooper Stadium. Another twelve odd thousand rocked up to that sensational support for our reds which is going well, and Alex Diminor. We really thought that, you know, maybe this time he's going to step it up a cog and take on the best in the world, and unfortunately anix cinner was just way too good. It was six six six one. The only thing is for for Alex and he and his team and we'll be covering this off the Australian Open. Is where do they go now back to the drawing board, because they really had built this up to say, okay, this is Alex is going to go to the next step. So they go back and go okay, actually when we're nowhere near it at the moment, you know, he's number eight in the world, but it seems like a big gap between him and the top five, so interesting to see what answers we can get out of that. Of course, those games will continue on the TDU has just been running one the next I think that will stage three nor to urin luck. Also the Adelaide Epic was run and that's where you know, all the all the normal people can go out and have a ride, you getting the like on that. That can be different stages and always a lot of fun. So we'll cover that off as well. Of course, the BBL finals coming up. We're going to speak to Michael Hussy about that. That one's there's a there's a final happening tomorrow and then the Grand Final on the Monday. Of course the finals for tennis will go through. The women's will play on the Saturday and the men's will plan on the Sunday. So we've got a big weekend of sport coming up and a lot to cover off and we'll be doing all that at ball.
01:52:56
Speaker 1: All right, sounds good? Drew Boner with mister Gennifer and miss to row after four with the Sports Show here on five double A. Thanks for all your calls and texts today. I will talk to you tomorrow.
01:53:07
Speaker 4: Five Double A afternoons with Stacey Lee
01:49:05

01:49:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I thought Master, what.
01:49:28
Speaker 1: Jack exactly?
01:49:30

01:49:32

If you get divorced, unless you change your name back to your mind name. You are still a missus? Oh no, miss miss is nothing all right there go thank you for all I've been a missus. I've been both for forty years and yet I still have missus. Good good, and it's good for my children. We've all got the same name.
01:50:15
