ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Guilt has a way of following us, and the harder we try to numb it, the louder it becomes. When we act against our conscience, the pain can fuel a cycle of shame, isolation, and addiction.
We explore how that cycle plays out—from remorse to reaching for relief through substances or unhealthy behaviors—and why hiding only makes the emptiness worse. Steve shares his experience of using weed to escape guilt, and we connect it to relapse prevention and the truth that we’re only as sick as our secrets.
Recovery requires honesty and action. We talk about telling the truth when someone asks, “How are you?”, building connection, and taking contrary action to create healthier patterns.

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:02.080
We put ourselves in a different direction. We give ourselves an opportunity.
00:00:02.240 --> 00:00:07.280
This is the Addiction Recovery Podcast with Steven T.
00:00:07.280 --> 00:00:11.199
Ginsburg, founder of Restore Detox Centers in Sunny, California.
00:00:11.199 --> 00:00:13.279
Enjoy your experience.
00:00:13.279 --> 00:00:20.399
Steven, so great to be back together with you today.
00:00:20.399 --> 00:00:22.800
We're on a roll here with the podcast.
00:00:22.800 --> 00:00:25.440
This is episode 96.
00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:27.120
Oh, so close to 100.
00:00:27.120 --> 00:00:27.839
Love it.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:28.719
Love it.
00:00:28.719 --> 00:00:35.359
Today I want to talk about this idea of every sin wounds us.
00:00:35.359 --> 00:00:39.600
And so this isn't like praise the Lord, open your Bible, we're gonna preach to you.
00:00:39.600 --> 00:00:42.079
Because trust me, I sin all the time.
00:00:42.079 --> 00:00:44.159
I make a ton of mistakes.
00:00:44.159 --> 00:00:46.079
So do you, so does everybody else.
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:50.000
So if you sin, we we sin.
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:50.719
Welcome to the show.
00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:51.920
Man, yeah, yeah.
00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:52.560
Welcome to the show.
00:00:52.560 --> 00:01:00.560
There's also there's a bumper sticker once that uh somebody's talking about there saying, Don't judge me because I sin differently than you.
00:01:01.359 --> 00:01:02.079
I love that.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:02.960
I love that.
00:01:02.960 --> 00:01:04.319
Yep, exactly.
00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:15.040
But here's the thought I I think it's like wickedness, sin, whatever you want to call it, evil is never ever, ever happiness.
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:18.159
I was just talking to my kids about this, and I want to hear your thoughts on this.
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:21.359
This isn't even a religion type episode.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:29.920
I I just think there's some truth to it, and because I I know for a fact, because I've been like I've I've done a lot of bad things in my life.
00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:41.439
But the thought here that I sharing with my kids, I want to share with you in the audience, is when we do something, we have this remorse of conscious.
00:01:41.439 --> 00:01:50.400
It's guilt, it's shame, it's embarrassment, and there's no way to escape it.
00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:57.120
You think you can escape it, and guess guess how you think you can escape it?
00:01:57.120 --> 00:01:57.840
You'd numb.
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:13.120
Like you try to numb it because you're like, ah, I did something really bad, you feel bad, and then you numb it through drugs, alcohol, food, sleep, whatever it is, work, but it doesn't go away.
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:17.439
And so I remember I try to be a really good kid, you know.
00:02:17.439 --> 00:02:18.639
I tried my best.
00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:24.719
I remember one of my friends came over from high school and he brought a little baggie of weed.
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:27.280
Never smoked weed before in my life.
00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:30.800
And it's not like I had a pipe or anything to smoke it out of.
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:34.639
So we just got like a pop can or a soda can and poked some holes and smoked.
00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:38.159
It's probably like terrible for your brain cells, you know, doing it like that.
00:02:38.159 --> 00:02:38.879
But we did.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:40.960
I don't even know if I got high.
00:02:40.960 --> 00:02:45.599
Oh my gosh, Steven, I felt terrible.
00:02:45.599 --> 00:02:48.000
I was like, I'm going to hell.
00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:50.240
Oh my gosh, what did I just do?
00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:52.319
Now I'm a drug addict.
00:02:52.319 --> 00:02:54.560
I felt so bad.
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:56.159
I felt so guilty.
00:02:56.159 --> 00:02:57.919
I felt so much shame.
00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:00.080
And so you know what I did about it?
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:01.599
I smoked more.
00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:09.360
Of course, and then I smoked more, and then I smoked more until I was just numb walking around like a like a dead person.
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:22.000
And so I think like men, women, you know, sexual sin things that we do, like it plagues us, and we broken world because we have this system built in where we feel guilt and shame.
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:23.840
I think that's by design.
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:27.360
Otherwise, if there's no consequence, everybody would just do crazy stuff.
00:03:27.360 --> 00:03:30.960
They just murder their neighbor, they do this, they do that.
00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:34.800
But we have a system built in that alerts us.
00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:35.520
Absolutely.
00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:37.599
I just don't think there's a way to escape that.
00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:39.280
I wanna what are your thoughts on that, Steven?
00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:46.000
I mean, it's just so it's a it's a remarkably poignant, relevant, broad stroke, and I love it.
00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.800
And like we're only as sick as our secrets.
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:54.800
And you know, we we are we are broken, and we gotta take this thing all.
00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:58.080
And yes, we're not doing a Bible study, we gotta take it all the way back to the garden.
00:03:58.080 --> 00:04:05.120
And and that it all just went from there, and it's a fallen world, and that's not bad news.
00:04:05.120 --> 00:04:16.800
There's good news, and the good news is we don't have to live in depravity, we don't have to allow shame and regret and remorse to govern or to rule us.
00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:38.480
We can take contrary action, we can pivot, uh, we can start a new pattern of behavior and focus on a different objective at any point in our day, at any point in our life, and start to rewrite the history and start to really rectify the very things that held us back.
00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:42.800
And so, you know, one perfect man I know about, they put him on a cross.
00:04:42.800 --> 00:04:45.759
The rest of us, while we're here, are doing the best we can.
00:04:45.759 --> 00:05:00.000
So I think we've got to continue to look and live in the solution, continue to look and live in the exploration for the solution, and continue to participate in supporting one another.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:03.360
Again, easy things to say, hard things to live.
00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:12.959
Extending ongoing grace to one another, reaching out to one another, and we start to slowly but surely rise out of those ashes and realize there's a better way.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:14.800
The day gets hopeful.
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:19.279
We start to understand like we don't have to live in sin.
00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:23.199
And anything we take out of that darkness into the light, it has no power over us.
00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:24.639
Yeah, and and I love that.
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:27.920
And I love how you brought up just Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:33.040
And I think you know, God is so full of grace and mercy.
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:40.639
What's interesting is, you know, in the Bible in Genesis, it talks about like this tree of life and cherubim and a flaming sword.
00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:41.759
And you're like, what is that?
00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:42.879
Is that just symbolism?
00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:43.920
What is it?
00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:55.519
And you know, the thoughts that I have on that is God is so merciful and graceful that he put a cherub, like cherubim's like an angel, like a uh angelic messenger.
00:05:55.519 --> 00:05:56.160
I didn't know that.
00:05:56.160 --> 00:06:12.319
I had to look it up in this flaming sword, basically in front of the tree of life, saying, I'm gonna protect you from yourself because if you sin or transgress, and then you go eat of this fruit of the tree of life, you're gonna live forever and you're gonna be forever miserable.
00:06:12.319 --> 00:06:14.639
So, what he did is he created this space.
00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:20.000
He said, I'm gonna create this distance between the tree of life and where you are right now.
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:23.920
And that distance, that space allows us to change.
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:33.519
And so, what's interesting about like the last episode and how this all ties in, um, episode 95, we were talking about doing stuff that works in simplicity.
00:06:33.519 --> 00:06:38.240
And when you think about it, like it's it's really simple.
00:06:38.240 --> 00:06:41.199
Every single day we're gonna probably make a mistake.
00:06:41.199 --> 00:06:45.759
And if maybe one day we have a perfect day here or there, but then the next day we're gonna make a mistake.
00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:52.720
It's it's basically okay, we make a mistake, we sin, we do evil, we transgress, whatever you want to call it.
00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:56.240
All we got to do is commit to change.
00:06:56.240 --> 00:06:58.399
We say, okay, we're not gonna do that again.
00:06:58.399 --> 00:07:02.800
Feel remorse, feel regret, and say, I'm gonna change.
00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:08.480
Yesterday, the way I spoke to my wife, that felt terrible and made her sad.
00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:10.800
I'm not gonna, I'm gonna try not to do that again.
00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:11.680
And then guess what?
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:13.600
You're gonna do it again, right?
00:07:13.600 --> 00:07:20.000
But the whole attitude is today I'm gonna just be better than I was yesterday.
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:28.959
But I I think when we believe that we can just hide our sins, like you said, our you know, our secrets keep us sick.
00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:35.439
When we believe we could live this life, and there's just no consequence, there's no wounds.
00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:41.519
That's where I think we trick ourselves and we open ourselves up to addiction because we're gonna feel this pain.
00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:47.759
You talk about it in your book, Steven, like this pain, emptiness, that emptiness, this the emptiness, right?
00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:52.800
And you're like, I don't know what's going on, but I feel this emptiness, I feel this gap.
00:07:52.800 --> 00:07:56.240
And then we try to fill it with terrible things.
00:07:56.240 --> 00:07:59.839
But that's why the gap gets us in the first place.
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:01.759
A thousand percent.
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:12.800
And again, this the whole conveyance of the sentiment is on track, and it's about giving ourselves, like giving ourselves through, and it's it's an action, it's a verb.
00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:17.360
We put ourselves in a different direction, we give ourselves an opportunity.
00:08:17.360 --> 00:08:22.000
We you can't like you know, that this thing's age-old, this part of it.
00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:27.680
Like the definition of insanity is what repeating the same behavior and expecting a different result.
00:08:27.680 --> 00:08:29.920
It all starts to anchor in.
00:08:29.920 --> 00:08:36.799
So, okay, let's get into a different behavior pattern, let's get into different choices, let's get on this.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:38.080
Or how about this?
00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:42.320
Let's reach out and be like, hey, I need a hand, like I need someone to process with me.
00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:44.000
I want to talk about how I'm feeling.
00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.600
Okay, like I mean, like, you know, one thing I this is good.
00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:48.799
It triggered me on this.
00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:52.000
Something I've been working on this year, and I work on different things.
00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:54.320
I'm finding different points in my life in sobriety.
00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:55.600
Steve, I'm working on different things.
00:08:55.600 --> 00:08:58.000
There's something I've been really intentional about this year.
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:03.840
When people ask me how I am, I thank them for asking me because I really am excited they've asked me.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:06.639
And then I actually tell them how I am.
00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:10.559
I don't just, you know, I'm fine, I'm blessed, I'm nah, dude.
00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:11.600
Nah, we're not doing that.
00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:14.799
I'll be like, oh man, we're going right now.
00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:16.000
Like it's a roller coaster.
00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:16.399
I don't know.
00:09:16.399 --> 00:09:17.679
And like, or this or that.
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:20.159
I share like my like what is my truth?
00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:21.279
And you know what?
00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:25.600
Like, good, that totally like releases that pressure valve for me.
00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:30.320
And by the way, they light up because they're so I can see they're like, this is so awesome.
00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:34.240
Thank you for like sharing with me what's really going on.
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:39.039
I want to participate in that, and that that's like that's I'm not tooting my horn.
00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:45.360
Like, I do that for my own sake, but I'm doing something great for that person who cares enough to ask me how I'm doing.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:49.679
And so things like that, those are sin busters, man.
00:09:49.679 --> 00:09:53.919
Those are secret busters, those are shame busters.
00:09:53.919 --> 00:09:59.919
I like this, and I want us to live in those realms like we are right now, today, together.
00:10:00.159 --> 00:10:00.639
I like that.
00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:02.559
Guilt busters, shame busters.
00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:13.440
No, and I mean, think about think about a a while back when we when we had Victoria on the show, you know, she's a super fan of the show and and a friend of Restore.
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:19.440
When she was on the show, like how natural was it to just have a conversation with her?
00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:22.159
It was like this, just like this.
00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:23.519
It was right.
00:10:23.519 --> 00:10:51.759
And we were just we were talking about things that mattered, and we were talking about things that were definitely sensitive and and personal, and we were talking about the solution and where there's hope and where there's light, and something remarkable and beautiful that came out of something that was, you know, horrible and horrific, but but that trauma and that mess uh starts to construct that beautiful message where there is hope for all of us.
00:10:52.080 --> 00:11:03.519
And and I'm I don't know about you, but I sitting on you know the the show and doing the show with her and and you and I was thinking there's 10 things here that she just said that I could say me too.
00:11:03.519 --> 00:11:05.919
Oh my gosh, yeah, same here.
00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:22.240
Completely, and it's the similarities, not the differences, and the world carries these things, and we realize we're not terminally unique, and then the best part, brother, is when we get together and we camp out on the solution to what?
00:11:22.240 --> 00:11:25.919
To everything, and then like we're gonna be here anyhow, right?
00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:41.519
We're here, let's make it like this like let's communicate, let's hold one another up, let's participate in the solution, let's foster hope and let's keep forging ahead and just keep finding a better way each day.
00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:43.279
That's a good deal, right there.
00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:45.919
Let's participate in that deal together.
00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:51.919
Yeah, and and here's the deal we know you're out there, we know you're listening because we see the stats on the show, right?
00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:55.120
So we we know that a lot of people are tuning into the show.
00:11:55.120 --> 00:11:56.639
So don't be weird.
00:11:56.639 --> 00:11:58.399
Like you could pull your phone right now.
00:11:58.399 --> 00:12:00.080
You're listening on your phone, I'm sure.
00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:11.279
If you're driving, yeah, don't don't do this while you're driving, but you could pull your phone, open your email browser, and type in hello at restore detoxcenters.com.
00:12:11.279 --> 00:12:14.879
We're not gonna like opt you into anything or try to sell you anything.
00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:21.440
Send us an email and just say, I'm alive, I agree, I want to be on your show.
00:12:21.440 --> 00:12:23.600
I am struggling with this.
00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:29.759
Like, look when Steven and I do this show together, we do it because we love you and we care about you.
00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:35.039
And like we just said, there's so many similarities with us.
00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:45.120
And I think when we're making mistakes, we're screwing up, or life's hard, or life's great, or we're full of gratitude, whatever state you're in, we can relate.
00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:53.440
But I think when you don't have anybody to reach out to, or you just don't feel like you're part of something, like you can be part of the the restored nation here.
00:12:53.440 --> 00:13:02.080
And when when you have that connection to a bigger community, you realize, oh my gosh, maybe I'm not so weird.
00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:07.440
Maybe maybe my struggles aren't so like foreign to everybody.
00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:13.600
I can relate to other people, and when we share into that, our pain is eased.
00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:14.639
Amen.
00:13:14.639 --> 00:13:15.440
I don't know.
00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:18.639
I just that that's what I wanted to end on here, Steven.
00:13:19.039 --> 00:13:30.159
I I love that, and I I think it's a common solution for the better good, and it's it's proven, and and we're participating in the proof of that now.
00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:36.720
And again, to your point, please know this like we want to hear from you, we want to interact with you.
00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:39.600
Uh, we want we want to have you come on the podcast.
00:13:39.600 --> 00:13:41.039
We want questions.
00:13:41.039 --> 00:13:42.879
We're here for you and with you.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:44.240
We love you, we support you.
00:13:44.240 --> 00:13:46.000
Everyone have a safe and sober day.
00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:49.919
And Steve, thank you so much for this remarkable subject today.
00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:50.879
Cheers.
