speaker-0: This podcast contains graphic and explicit content, as well as all of the spoilers a movie has to offer.
speaker-1: Listener discretion is advised.
speaker-0: Hi friends, welcome back to So Here's the Problem With That, where we watch every sci-fi movie ever made and tell you what's wrong with their Psi and their fi. My name is Emily and I'm a movie fan.
speaker-1: And my name is Doctor Neal and I have a PhD in high energy physics.
speaker-0: Yay! And we have such a special guest right now, Doctor
speaker-1: Special guest. Special guest
speaker-2: Yes! I am Dr. Hannah Ridgewell. I have a a doctorate in pharmacy or a pharma D, but that's not what we're gonna talk about. We're not gonna talk about anything pharmacy related.
speaker-0: It's not quite as ⁓ it's not
speaker-2: There was one point in the book I was like a pharmacist would never have let that happen, but we will talk about that in our own episodes.
speaker-0: Very excited about that. Hannah, can you please tell these fine folks at home why you're joining us?
speaker-2: I am here because Emily and I are kooky and also have our own podcast about book two movie adaptations and we decided, well Emily decided, that we needed to do a crossover episode and before I understood that Emily betrayed me and had already seen the movie, I agreed. So I read the whole book thinking I was the first one to know what happened. No
speaker-0: So sorry. So to let the audience in
speaker-2: ⁓ yeah, we probably should like name our podcast. The book
speaker-0: Well, the book that we that I gave Hannah apoplexion about, apparently, is called Project Hail Mary. Now you can see, fine folks at home, where all the interconnections are coming. So Hannah and I have a podcast called Adaptation Addicts. It is live now. We will link to it in the show notes where we read books. Not just sci fi books, book books. We watch the movie adaptations.
speaker-2: So many different genres of books.
speaker-0: ⁓ my god, too many. We Hannah and I are gonna read, did read Project Hail Mary. The three of us, we are going to watch this film. I'm so excited. Now, for people in the future, this film just came out a month ago. So this movie details episode is not only gonna be ⁓ full of spoilers, but this movie details episode is also gonna be a little bit shorter because there's just not a lot of information out there. Unfortunately There's no numbers game 'cause the numbers aren't in yet. I know.
speaker-2: Play the numbers game.
speaker-1: My favorite part of the book.
speaker-2: Two
speaker-1: I was getting good at it, Emily.
speaker-0: You were getting real good at it. You have like zeroed in. ⁓ we do the numbers game on Adaptation Addicts as well because it was such a fan favorite, fan being Hannah. It was Hannah's favorite. We had to do it.
speaker-2: Yeah, that's my
speaker-1: Good one. It's fun.
speaker-0: So, this is gonna be a multi-part crossover episode. I am not sure if this is gonna be episode one in this multi-part or if the book is gonna be episode one. We'll find out. We're gonna have to talk about the movie, but that's gonna be separate from how many science questions I am gonna have. So
speaker-2: Many science questions. That was like half the fun of reading this book. It was like, ⁓ we're gonna have to ask Neil about this and ask Neil about this.
speaker-1: I'm very excited to talk about the science. ⁓ I know like literally two th maybe three things about this movie and that
speaker-2: Which is more than I knew going into the book. Okay. I knew I just knew it was a book in space.
speaker-1: Yep. Okay. Yeah. Like I actually didn't know that they were in space. I just kind of assumed that there was like I knew that there were aliens, but I didn't know if the aliens were in space or if the aliens were on Earth or if they were on some other planet. ⁓
speaker-0: Hannah, you hold that thought. I see your thought about to exit your mouth. You hold that thought. We are in the minisode, so here's what we're gonna do. Neil, would you please read this handy dandy little synopsis of Project Hail Mary for these fine folks at home?
speaker-1: A science teacher wakes up alone on a spaceship. As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing Earth's Sun and that an unexpected friendship may be the key.
speaker-0: Friendship Friendship saves the universe.
speaker-1: Friends the power of friendship.
speaker-0: ⁓ can you read the only tagline that IMDB has?
speaker-1: There's one. Believe. Just one.
speaker-0: I think as they re-release
speaker-2: Just one word?
speaker-1: Believe in the Hail Mary
speaker-0: It could be worse. It could be better.
speaker-1: I mean there have been honestly, it's pretty mid. It's pretty mid.
speaker-2: the better.
speaker-0: So Project Cale Mary is rated PG thirteen for some thematic material and suggestive references. Runtime, two hours, thirty six minutes, ta ⁓ genre tags, adventure, comedy, sci fi. I'm so excited to get to the parents guide, you guys. I love it so much. So Neil, what are the two things that you know about this film? ⁓ the science or sorry, is space and air.
speaker-1: I didn't even know it was space. I knew it was Aliens. And I knew that Ryan Gosling was in this movie because he loved the book so much that he went to the director and said, You must cast me as the main main character. And the director said, Well, yeah, now the movie's gonna do good. Those are the two things that I know about.
speaker-0: Yep. And you guys okay, so I did see this opening night. And I was so excited and I enjoyed it greatly. Just spoiler alert. And then I had the thought, hey, this is a sci-fi movie. I can't wait to talk to Neil about it. And then I had the thought, hey, this is a sci-fi book.
speaker-1: Passover.
speaker-0: But what are your science expectations, Niels?
speaker-1: ⁓ mid. My science expectations are real mid. This is a b this is like a major blockbuster thriller. Somebody told me this movie felt like Interstellar did to them. And I was like, You realize they had a team of consulting scientists who wrote papers about what black holes should look like so that they could render that in a simulation and put it into the movie, right? And they were like Well yeah, but it felt the same. And I was like, All right, that's the expectation now. So I'm so sorely set up for success going into this movie. I can't I cannot overstate how hard I'm gonna rip this apart.
speaker-0: Yeah. The story checks out. Yeah. And here's the thing is I can't even like say no, it's gonna be so much closer to Interstellar, because obviously I don't know shit about shit. So
speaker-1: We're gonna find out.
speaker-0: Yeah.
speaker-1: Hannah, you look like you have thoughts about this.
speaker-0: Hey
speaker-2: We're saving my thoughts. I was told to save my thoughts. I'm saving my thoughts.
speaker-0: Alright. So where can we watch this? At the time of this taping, you can only see this in theaters. Alright. On that note, friends, neighbors, we will see you next week.
speaker-1: Listener discretion is advised.
