ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Last week the 65th meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change, the world leading body on climate science, was suspended after the meeting went over time and a group of delegates from smaller and vulnerable countries left.
The panel had been unable to agree on a timetable for an important upcoming climate report and a budget. Major disagreements centred around whether the report should be published in 2028 in time to inform the second Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement or pushed back to 2029.
Delegates from countries such as India, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Kenya have heavily supported the 2029 date, as they claim it will allow more equitable participation of scientists from around the world.
To discuss the suspended meeting and controversial report timeline producer Thomas talked to University of Auckland Professor Cate Macinnis-Ng.
