Hey, Coop here. Welcome to 90 Second ReCAP, where I share a quick sports history lesson based on today’s cap.
It’s October 26th, and I’m wearing a Chicago Cubs New Era 59Fifty, with a 2016 World Series side patch, purchased from Sports World Chicago.
We left off yesterday with the Indians shutting out the Cubs in game one of the Fall Classic, continuing a World Series winless streak that reached day twenty five thousand, nine hundred fifty–and which would FINALLY and MERCIFULLY come to an end on THIS DATE in 2016.
Game one’s LOUSY weather gave way to game two’s ABYSMAL weather.
The 43 degree temperature at first pitch tied for the second-coldest World Series game in the wildcard era, but the cold wasn’t the only weather issue–an inbound storm prompted the league to move the start time up by an hour, in hopes of getting in and out before the rains hit.
The visitors struck first, with the principals from the souvenir company getting the North Siders off the schneid early.
Leadoff man Dexter Fowler grounded out, but two-hitter Kris Bryant would single to center, and Anthony Rizzo would follow with a double to right, scoring KB with the first run that Cleveland had given up in 18 innings.
Game two really ended up being a story of two pitchers. Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer was ineffective, coming off a lacerated pinkie caused by an accident with a drone.
Meanwhile, 2015 Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta–who was good at baseball–wouldn’t give up a hit until the sixth, when The Tribe would push across a run to cut the deficit to 5-1–where it would end, with the Cubs locking up their first World Series victory in more than 71 years.
