Send a Prayer or Prayer Request
Why does healing feel immediate for some people and painfully slow for others? We name the question out loud and refuse the easy answers, then walk straight through the Scriptures that complicate our favorite healing narratives. I’m Mark John, and I’m laying out multiple reasons people may not see healing right away, not to discourage you, but to help you pray with clarity and stay anchored when your body or your heart is worn out.
We talk about Paul’s thorn in the flesh and God’s surprising response: “My grace is sufficient for thee.” We sit with the uncomfortable possibility that God sometimes shows His power by sustaining us in weakness instead of removing the pain on demand. Then we turn to Lazarus and the tension of delayed healing when Jesus intentionally waits, reminding us that delay is not denial, even when it feels personal.
From there we zoom out to the bigger theology of suffering and bodily healing: we live in a fallen, mortal creation that groans, and complete restoration is ultimately tied to resurrection. We also look at faithful believers like Trophimus, Timothy, and Epaphroditus, asking why some people receive dramatic miracles while others receive practical instruction, endurance, or healing later. We address when sin can be connected to sickness or consequences, how confession and prayer belong together, and how faith matters without turning someone’s illness into a blame game.
If you need prayer, we share how to reach us, and we close by praying for healing in God’s time and God’s way while giving Him all the credit. Subscribe, share this with someone who’s waiting on an answer, and leave a review with what you want us to unpack next.

00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:02.000
I am your host, Mark John.
00:00:02.319 --> 00:00:03.839
Thank you for tuning in.
00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:06.160
Why God doesn't heal.
00:00:06.320 --> 00:00:14.080
There are many reasons why God may not heal someone, but more importantly, what we can do about it in case we are on that list.
00:00:14.400 --> 00:00:16.960
For prayer, call 747-4 Prayer.
00:00:17.199 --> 00:00:19.519
747-the number four in the word prayer.
00:00:19.760 --> 00:00:21.440
It is a voice message system.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:25.920
And somebody will be praying for you once they receive your request.
00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:27.839
Also feel free to leave a prayer.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:32.640
And if you're listening via podcast, feel free to leave a voice memo right where you are.
00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:36.799
We appreciate every prayer donation that you offer.
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:39.920
God may have a purpose in weakness.
00:00:40.079 --> 00:00:41.280
This is number one.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:43.920
Paul asked three times, you remember the story.
00:00:44.159 --> 00:00:48.719
Paul has asked thrice for his thorn in the flesh to be removed.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:51.679
But God answers him, which is kind of unique.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:54.000
And it's a conversation, it's not an inspiration.
00:00:54.159 --> 00:00:55.600
It sounds like it's an audible.
00:00:55.759 --> 00:00:58.799
And it says, My grace is sufficient for thee.
00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:01.439
Second Corinthians 12, 7 through 10.
00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:08.239
Sometimes God's power is displayed through sustaining someone rather than immediately removing the affliction.
00:01:08.319 --> 00:01:11.120
This does not sound good for certain denominations.
00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:12.319
They don't like this verse.
00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:21.280
And one thing they could argue and have some merit is that this affliction, this thorn, whatever it would be, may not have been a sickness.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:28.959
And they would argue if it was a sickness, God would heal it, but because this was a thorn, that God did not have to heal it right away, or some sort of argument like that.
00:01:29.200 --> 00:01:33.840
The argument at this point is irrelevant because there's a man at the time who was suffering.
00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.519
And when you're suffering, you're not necessarily worried about the label of what it is.
00:01:37.680 --> 00:01:41.280
You're just wondering if God will remove what is causing the suffering.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:52.640
So the thorn in this case, whether it is a sickness or eye disease or the people who are Judaizers who are coming after him, whatever your theology allows for this, he didn't want it.
00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:56.159
And he prayed thrice, three times, that God would take it away.
00:01:56.319 --> 00:01:59.200
And God said, My grace is sufficient.
00:01:59.519 --> 00:02:01.599
That was meaning no, he is not.
00:02:01.760 --> 00:02:10.000
And so we need to understand for the apostle who has faith that his grace was going to be sufficient.
00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:12.960
Healing may be delayed rather than denied.
00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:14.159
This is number two.
00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:16.560
Lazarus, if you remember, was sick.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:22.560
So let's assume that we like are like Lazarus and we are not feeling good, and we are sick and near unto death.
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:25.840
We don't know maybe that we're near unto death, but we do know we are sick.
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:29.759
And Yeshua intentionally waited before going to him.
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.240
That is always a marvelous story to read.
00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:35.599
If you are Lazarus, you don't know, then you just don't know.
00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:41.280
But there is something that Yeshua knows that he still decided intentionally to delay.
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:44.159
He has something greater in mind than healing a sickness.
00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:50.879
But how would you feel if you are Lazarus and you are sick and you are wondering if the Lord is coming to heal you and he does not show up?
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:53.199
He intentionally waited to go to him.
00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:58.319
The delay served a larger purpose that the people involved could not initially see.
00:02:58.719 --> 00:03:04.159
How you work with that in your particular denominations is completely up to you.
00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:08.879
Number three, we still live in a fallen, mortal creation.
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:11.520
We still live in a fallen and mortal creation.
00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:18.000
Romans says creation groans and travails, and believers themselves groan while we are waiting for the redemption of our body.
00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:24.719
Complete bodily restoration is ultimately connected with resurrection, not necessarily guaranteed before death.
00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:26.560
That's a tough one, isn't it?
00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:29.280
Because this is talking about the ultimate healing.
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:35.280
So some people, if you remember when Yeshua says, hey, when you bind, you know, when you're going to cast out a demon, go for the strong man.
00:03:35.520 --> 00:03:39.199
Well, isn't it interesting that when we think about sickness, what would be worse?
00:03:39.439 --> 00:03:47.199
Having a new body or praying for a headache to go away, what would be the stronger man, so to speak, when we relay that parallel over here?
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:50.479
Well, the resurrection body, and here we're still groaning.
00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:54.000
So that which has been promised is not yet on earth.
00:03:54.240 --> 00:03:59.120
Now we can pray for it, but we're groaning for it, and it did not happen immediately or instantly.
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:00.639
In fact, we're still waiting.
00:04:00.800 --> 00:04:09.599
Take note that delay is not deny, and let's also be willing to celebrate when he brings it in the form in which he wishes to bring it.
00:04:09.840 --> 00:04:16.000
Lazarus had something in store with his prayers, I would be assured, but yet God has something else in mind.
00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:25.199
We're praying sometimes for the headache or for the cancer, but we also should be praying just as diligently for the resurrection of our bodies, that we're going to be totally transformed.
00:04:25.360 --> 00:04:29.519
Most people don't pray for that as they isolate and pray for the little things.
00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:33.839
Go ahead and pray for this up here and let these other things begin to fall into place.
00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:37.120
We do not ignore them, but let's go after the strong man too.
00:04:37.279 --> 00:04:40.079
God does not heal every faithful believer immediately.
00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:50.240
Now, the only argument against this is that the people we're about to mention were not faithful, because what we would have to do as a preacher trying to prove a doctrine is say, well, they probably had something going on in their life.
00:04:50.480 --> 00:04:51.439
But let's take a look.
00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:54.480
There's a very famous man in the Bible that you've probably heard of.
00:04:54.560 --> 00:04:55.759
His name was Trophimus.
00:04:56.079 --> 00:04:57.439
He was sick at Meletum.
00:04:57.600 --> 00:04:58.160
I'm kidding.
00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:01.680
Not many people know his name, but he is very important to the transmission of the gospel.
00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:06.560
He is one of Paul's proteges that Paul was training to take over for him when he was going to be done.
00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:13.600
And Paul trained a lot of people fast because he knew his time was probably getting near due to the gospel being spread.
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:21.759
Be that as it may, Trophimus was one of the men that he was training, and he was sick at miletus, or meletum in this case.
00:05:21.920 --> 00:05:31.759
Second Timothy 4 and 20, Timothy had recurring stomach problems and often infirmities, 1 Timothy 5 23, and epaphroditis became extremely ill and nearly died, and then God did heal him.
00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:34.000
Extremely ill and nearly died.
00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:36.560
Let's pretend that took more than just four hours.
00:05:36.800 --> 00:05:40.800
He became ill, let's say that took a few days, and then he almost died, let's say that took almost a week.
00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:44.000
Do you think from day one he was praying for God to heal him?
00:05:44.319 --> 00:05:46.000
Now, all three men have something in common.
00:05:46.079 --> 00:05:47.360
They each knew Paul.
00:05:47.600 --> 00:05:52.959
Now, what you know about Paul and what I know about Paul, they probably knew about Paul, that Paul prayed over handkerchiefs and sent them out.
00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:55.600
And people were getting healed just by touching that handkerchief.
00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:56.480
Now think about this.
00:05:56.720 --> 00:06:02.079
Your mentor, Timothy Trophimus, had sent out handkerchiefs so that people could be healed.
00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:04.480
But he sent you a letter saying drink more wine.
00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:06.000
Why didn't they get a handkerchief?
00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:07.439
Why didn't they just receive that healing?
00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:12.319
What is going on in God's mind where some people get a hanky and they get a letter?
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:21.120
What is going on in God's mind where they can touch the hanky and all of a sudden they're healed, but somebody who's working for the gospel falls ill and almost dies, and then God says, okay, now I'll heal.
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:23.680
We have to deal with that reality, do we not?
00:06:23.839 --> 00:06:25.839
Or we could just say they just didn't have enough faith.
00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:27.120
We could say that.
00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:29.040
I wouldn't, but we could.
00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:36.480
Sometimes, and this is a big one, sin can be directly connected to sickness or physical consequences.
00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:45.279
First Corinthians 11, 29 through 32, Paul says some believers were weak and sick, and some had died because God's discipline connected with their conduct at the Lord's Supper.
00:06:45.600 --> 00:06:51.279
Yeshua also told the man he had healed at Bethesda, behold, thou art made whole.
00:06:51.600 --> 00:06:55.519
Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon thee.
00:06:55.680 --> 00:06:57.120
That deserves his whole podcast.
00:06:57.199 --> 00:06:59.360
And we might do that if God permits.
00:06:59.600 --> 00:07:04.879
But that gives a direct biblical connection between continuing in sin and the possibility of a worse consequence.
00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:10.800
And then James 5, 15 through 16 also places healing, confession, forgiveness, and prayer in close relationship.
00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:14.560
However, scripture does not teach that every sickness is caused by an individual sin.
00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:15.600
It does not teach that.
00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:17.519
But isn't it interesting that some are?
00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:18.800
So what do you do about it?
00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:20.160
Oh, repent.
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:21.839
So you go to the strong man first.
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:23.680
That sin is going to be worse than a sickness.
00:07:23.759 --> 00:07:24.800
Get the sin out of your life.
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:26.399
The sickness can follow.
00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:28.000
It can follow.
00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:29.920
If this is the one that is connected.
00:07:30.079 --> 00:07:32.160
But as you're saying, there's a lot of things going on.
00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:37.519
It doesn't appear that Paul's thorn was because of sin in his life, but because of the surpassing revelation.
00:07:37.759 --> 00:07:38.639
Interesting note.
00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:42.720
God's answer may differ from what was requested.
00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:43.839
How about that one?
00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:47.360
We are told to ask boldly, but prayer remains subject to God's will.
00:07:47.519 --> 00:07:50.000
If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:53.279
Yeshua himself prayed, nevertheless, not my will, but thying be done.
00:07:53.439 --> 00:07:59.519
So we need to understand that what he would have in mind, Lazarus could say, Come immediately, but he intentionally waited.
00:07:59.759 --> 00:08:04.240
Trophimus could say, Send me a hanky, but he might get a word of encouragement instead.
00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:08.720
He got left behind from an apostle, from a healing evangelist.
00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:09.839
He got left behind.
00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:12.000
We left him there because he was sick.
00:08:12.319 --> 00:08:16.160
And Timothy might want a hanky, but he gets a letter saying drink.
00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:19.279
Well, what are we going to do about that?
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:20.639
That's in the Bible.
00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:22.319
There are cases.
00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:26.720
There are cases where unbelief hindered the mighty works.
00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:27.759
Now we're home.
00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:28.720
Now we're there.
00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:31.199
This is the only one that most people know, but now we made it.
00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:38.159
Matthew 13, 58 says, Yeshua did not many, did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:41.360
James 1, 6 through 7 warns about asking while doubting.
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:42.720
So faith does matter.
00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:44.320
We're not minimizing that.
00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:47.840
But if that's the only thing you understand, you're missing a lot.
00:08:48.080 --> 00:08:54.960
And you can cause people to suffer because they think maybe it was a lack of faith, they might have needed to repent.
00:08:55.120 --> 00:09:01.279
They might have a sin that they know they're continuing in that is connected to what's going on, but they're thinking they just need more faith for healing.
00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:03.679
Strong man, get that sin out first.
00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.759
Sometimes we simply are not told why.
00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:08.799
Ouch.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:10.480
Not everybody likes that.
00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:11.840
We want God in a box.
00:09:11.919 --> 00:09:12.960
We want God to be predictable.
00:09:13.039 --> 00:09:19.279
We want to say a formula and know that God's going to do something, and then we can take credit because I prayed, they were healed.
00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:21.279
Listen, a lot of you have already had that.
00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:21.759
We've had that.
00:09:21.840 --> 00:09:23.600
We've seen it overseas, we've seen it in America.
00:09:23.759 --> 00:09:25.440
When we pray, people are healed.
00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:28.159
I can tell you with guarantee it had nothing to do with me.
00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:33.360
There were times when I just thought there's going to be a massive amount of healing because of how I felt, and very little happened.
00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:39.440
And there were literally times when I felt nothing and even felt sick myself, and that's when all the massive miracles would break out.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:40.639
I've seen it happen.
00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:46.879
And then when they wanted to come up and touch me, like I was some great evangelist from America, I had to let them know, no, this was not me.
00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:48.399
I don't feel good myself.
00:09:48.879 --> 00:09:51.759
I'm going through some acid reflux and everything while I'm talking to you.
00:09:51.919 --> 00:09:55.279
I'm a little lightheaded, and yet miracles are breaking out in this church.
00:09:55.519 --> 00:09:56.320
It's amazing.
00:09:56.559 --> 00:09:59.519
And now they think I'm being humble when I say, no, no, it praise God, praise God.
00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:00.480
And I'm like, no, no, it's you.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:01.120
No, no, it's him.
00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:02.080
It really is him.
00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:05.120
There was nothing that I could think or sense even in me.
00:10:05.279 --> 00:10:08.720
What they would call the anointing, I felt nothing, and yet God was operating.
00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:16.960
And in fact, it's kind of humorous that one lady was walking up to me, she got healed right in front of me, so I move up because God was just right here healing.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:18.960
So I move up to see if I can get a healing.
00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:21.120
And I'm the one that they come to listen to.
00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:23.919
Faith can move mountains for sure.
00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:26.080
We're not minimizing faith at all.
00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:28.399
But there's going to be more reasons than just faith.
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:36.720
And we don't want anyone to feel bad when your faith was sufficient, but maybe it was the preacher who wasn't where he needed or she needed to be, etc.
00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:40.639
We just went over several reasons why God may not heal.
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:42.960
His grace is going to be sufficient.
00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:44.799
We don't like that, but that's what he told Paul.
00:10:44.879 --> 00:10:45.919
We have to deal with that.
00:10:46.159 --> 00:10:47.840
We live in a fallen world.
00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:51.440
Delay is not denial, and those promises are all yes and amen.
00:10:51.679 --> 00:10:53.200
But what if it only happened in the resurrection?
00:10:53.279 --> 00:10:54.159
Would you be okay with that?
00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:59.279
Or are you so angry at God because you're demanding your frame, your frame of reference, and your frame of time?
00:10:59.440 --> 00:11:00.799
Lazarus could have done that.
00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:04.799
He could have been very angry, and people seemingly were angry when he showed up to the city.
00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:06.639
But yet look what happened.
00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:13.919
We cannot put God in a box, we cannot control God's timing, but we can say it is God's will to heal everyone all the time.
00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:17.440
It is God's will for everyone to be saved, so of course he wants you to be healed.
00:11:17.600 --> 00:11:18.559
We know that.
00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:23.279
But when and how always belong to him.
00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:25.519
And you can hinder that.
00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:26.799
And that's what we want to do.
00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:37.840
We want to make sure that if we're not being healed right now, it's nothing we have done, there's no sin in our lives, there's nothing that we haven't confessed, there's nothing, there's no habits that we're unwilling to break.
00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:42.960
And that is just him saying, I'll be there when the time is right.
00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:54.000
So if your name is Lazarus and you're sick, or if you're apaphroditis and you're sick and near unto dying, and he didn't heal you immediately, but you're still here.
00:11:54.559 --> 00:11:55.600
You are still here.
00:11:55.840 --> 00:12:02.399
So we do pray right now that if you've repented of your sins, we pray right now that you are healed and that the healing has already begun.
00:12:02.480 --> 00:12:04.240
He's already secured that at the cross.
00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:05.440
That's already begun.
00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:07.440
It's already here, it's already there.
00:12:07.679 --> 00:12:10.080
On earth as it is in heaven, that's what we're asking for.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:15.919
That he might move on earth in this timeline, as he has in his own timeline, in his eternity.
00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:20.399
And that's why we pray the way we pray, and that's why it doesn't rely on me, it relies on him.
00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:23.039
We ask him, he gets the credit.
00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:25.840
We agree with him, he gets the credit.
00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:27.840
Yes, they say I got a gift of healing.
00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:33.759
However, I have to agree with him because it is a gift from him and not from me.
00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:37.840
Yes, we do our best to stir it up, but it's a gift from him and not from me.
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:43.840
Yes, people are going to be healed by listening to this, but it is a gift from him and not from me.
00:12:44.399 --> 00:12:47.679
And if he doesn't heal, let's think about what's going on.
00:12:47.840 --> 00:12:50.320
Is it just a delay or is it a denial?
00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:53.919
It's not a denial, because it's already been approved at the cross.
00:12:55.039 --> 00:13:02.399
So now, Father, in your time, in your way, and in your will, heal in Yeshua's name.
00:13:02.720 --> 00:13:04.240
Let us know your testimonies.
00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:05.440
Let us know.
00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:06.240
It's time.
