It is the first podcast episode of the month here at A Sweat Life, and we are coming at you to share some things we're thinking about. We'll shoot the breeze, share things we love, and mostly try to crack each other up. Oh, and by the way, this is the Sweat Life's podcast, We Got Goals, and I'm Jena Anderson Cohen. Joining me today is Kelly Makovich, who leads our community and Dana Farber who runs Moonstone Marketing and works with A Sweat Life on content strategy and social media. I'm gonna choke. I'm dying. I'm drinking mud water
Dana:
Don't
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
and I
Dana:
touch.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
did not
Dana:
What
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I
Dana:
are
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
didn't
Dana:
you
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
stir
Dana:
drinking?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it well enough
Dana:
Oh.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
mud water I would made
Dana:
Ha.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
like a mud water latte So it's coffee and mud water which defeats the purpose of mud water and I made
Dana:
Got
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it very
Dana:
it
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
hastily
Dana:
got it
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
for this recordings anyway Add a spotlight we start every day and every episode of the podcast with one good thing. So Dana Kelly, what's good? Dana go first, I nominate you.
Dana:
Oh, great. As of the time of this recording, so we were recording this prior to Gina going to France. So we are recording this still before Memorial Day weekend, but I am meeting my boyfriend's parents this weekend, which feels like a very big adult step. He's already met my parents a handful of times because I'm based, I live close to my parents, but yeah, so it feels like a very adult thing. So if you guys have any tips on, met parents before obviously, and I'm very good with parents, I must say, but. If any tips
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
pick it with
Dana:
as
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
parents.
Dana:
to married ladies who have good relationships with your in-laws, please feel free to send those my way.
Kelly Matkovich:
Be
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Mmm.
Kelly Matkovich:
yourself. That's my tip.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Was that a song? Be
Kelly Matkovich:
Actually,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yourself,
Kelly Matkovich:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
be
Kelly Matkovich:
just,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yourself.
Kelly Matkovich:
it is.
Dana:
I really thought
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I love
Dana:
Kelly
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
that.
Dana:
was gonna break into some.
Kelly Matkovich:
It is because
Dana:
You know
Kelly Matkovich:
actually
Dana:
what
Kelly Matkovich:
this
Dana:
I always
Kelly Matkovich:
will,
Dana:
say.
Kelly Matkovich:
this plays into what we're gonna talk about later but one of my favorite rom-coms is Just Friends and there's so many great quotes in that and the Midwest mom in it, she sings this little tune and that's what it was.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Really? Yes.
Dana:
Oh my god, that's perfect! Perfect,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh,
Dana:
what a
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
a
Dana:
tie-in.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
preview. Be. Be
Dana:
I love it. Yeah, spoiler. Ha ha. Ha ha.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yourself. I love it. We do not have the rights to set be yourself song. So you didn't hear it. Kelly, what's good?
Kelly Matkovich:
Also, when this recording comes out, I will have completed my half marathon trail race,
Dana:
Nice!
Kelly Matkovich:
which I've been talking about forever, I feel like, but it is also Memorial Day weekend. And so when this comes out, I will have completed and I will feel great. And it went so well. That's the plan.
Dana:
We already know what went so
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
station.
Dana:
well.
Kelly Matkovich:
Yeah. Future self is...
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You tripped, Salah.
Kelly Matkovich:
excited that it's over.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Future self, this is past Kelly, who's done a lot of work to make things easier for future Kelly. I think you are in good hands with past Kelly.
Kelly Matkovich:
Yup.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Follow that time logic, because I'm a time scientist. My good thing, are you ready?
Kelly Matkovich:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
Yes. Yeah, no, we're ready. Sorry.
Kelly Matkovich:
Thanks for watching!
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh my god, no one's ready. I don't know why I always ask people if they're ready for
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
what
Kelly Matkovich:
sorry.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I'm about to say, because it's not gonna change your life at all. Okay.
Kelly Matkovich:
What if they said no? What if
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
No.
Kelly Matkovich:
they're
Dana:
No,
Kelly Matkovich:
like
Dana:
I'm
Kelly Matkovich:
no?
Dana:
not ready. Wait, give me a second. Now I'm ready. Yes.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Now I'm ready. I'm going to need some time. Okay, so my good thing is at first it made me nervous and now I'm happy I did it, but I was in charge of a group trip. It is my husband's 40th birthday. It has been my husband's 40th birthday. By my estimates, it will be my husband's birthday for the next three years. But I'm in charge of a group trip to France. Um, and I, I think I'm channeling my inner Kelly, uh, because I have created a spreadsheet itinerary for the group. Um, I have, I have everybody's like travel info and hotels and everything all in one document. And the closer I get, the more excited I get because I was the one in charge of it. Normally I'm like the, uh, the traveler who just shows up like, oh, thank you for hosting this bachelor party. be showing up and that's my gift. This is very exciting because I know every second of every day what we're doing.
Dana:
Does everyone on the trip know each other?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
No, which is also very exciting because there'll be so many friendship making possibilities.
Dana:
Yeah, I was gonna say, I was like, if anything, I'm sure your friendship activity is built in.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You know I do. Like there's a day when the gentleman will be going on a boat around France. Not all of France just Paris and then the ladies will be going to an exhibit and a lunch really looking forward to that day. I'm doing a go running tour run with my friend Shrena. And we know about go running tour because of the sweat life and pastors, specifically Eric leads those runs anyway, France. France
Dana:
That's amazing.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
and being the boss of it is my good thing. All right, what are you bringing this week? It's one topic from the categories of food, friendship, fitness, and fun. And we decided on one topic this week because we just really felt like two topics per person, we weren't giving enough love to each topic. So we're pairing it down one topic, we're really gonna go deep. Kelly, do you wanna go first or second?
Kelly Matkovich:
I'll go first.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
What are you bringing this week?
Kelly Matkovich:
I am talking about athletic shorts because it's been on my mind. Wait, am I going into it? Am I getting into it now? Okay.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah, let's
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
do
Dana:
right?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it.
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Let's
Dana:
let's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
get
Dana:
just
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it,
Dana:
do it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
sure.
Dana:
Let's just
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Let's
Dana:
do
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
get it.
Dana:
it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Let's
Dana:
Let's
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm
Dana:
dive
Kelly Matkovich:
just
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
just
Kelly Matkovich:
like
Dana:
straight
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
do
Kelly Matkovich:
ready
Dana:
into
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it.
Kelly Matkovich:
to
Dana:
those
Kelly Matkovich:
go.
Dana:
shorts. Get
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Straight
Dana:
into those
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
to the
Dana:
shorts,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
shorts.
Dana:
Kelly.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Get into your shorts. Ha ha ha
Kelly Matkovich:
I have
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
ha.
Kelly Matkovich:
such it's so hard for me to find shorts that I love like it I love more. I love yoga pants athletic pants. In the summer. It's hot. I need shorts especially since I'm doing so many more outdoor activities. So I have bought shorts from
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oof.
Kelly Matkovich:
to try them on. I'm not keeping them all. Cause I just have, it's so hard for me. Am I, what I'm looking for criteria wise is high-waisted that they have a brief liner.
Dana:
Mm.
Kelly Matkovich:
I like them to be about like four inches and some sort of storage and neutral colors. So I don't like bright colors. I don't like patterns. So more neutral colors. And you wouldn't think that'd be that hard, but for whatever reason. I struggle with shorts. So the runner up right now, I'm run run basically running shorts is through on running. They have a couple shorts that I'm into. But it is I don't know. I struggle every year with this. I don't know if you all share the same or what kind of athletic shorts you're into. I would take some suggestions because I just struggle every year. Shorts. Where are you with shorts?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Dana, do you wear shorts?
Dana:
I'm trying to get into bike shorts more because I'm really into the TikTok Princess Diana trend of just like a baggy sweatshirt and bike shorts. So mine's less for, I feel like fit, like function and more for fashion. So Kelly, are you mostly looking at like running shorts on specifically, right?
Kelly Matkovich:
Yeah, because I do like bike shorts, but I've never found bike shorts that fit me. They always like ride up on me.
Dana:
I
Kelly Matkovich:
I
Dana:
know,
Kelly Matkovich:
don't
Dana:
me
Kelly Matkovich:
really
Dana:
too.
Kelly Matkovich:
like how they look on me unless it's more lifestyle, then I don't like working out and then they're too much exposure for me.
Dana:
Yeah, now I get that too.
Kelly Matkovich:
I don't know. Yeah, so more, I guess more running based shorts or running, hiking.
Dana:
I have a pair of Nike running shorts. And again, I do very little actual running, but I do use them for errand running. And I love them. They have the brief and then they have a lot of storage. They have, I think a double waistband. So you can kind of like have them higher or lower, however you want them. Um, and I like those a lot, but I also keep really getting targeted by this brand on Tik TOK called Halara, I think it's called. And I keep getting targeted with this workout dress, but I was looking at all their stuff and like, they have good reviews and their stuff looks great. But again, this could just be TikTok influencing my mind.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay, I have two brands, one that I really love, but it's a bike short, and then one that's a running short that could be helpful for you. And PS, while you two were just chatting, I posted to the ambassador Slack, so maybe we'll get real-time results with Kelly's requirements.
Kelly Matkovich:
Perfect.
Dana:
Love it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
So we'll see what ambassadors have to share. So I love the, and I don't shop at Lululemon for a ton of things, but... These shorts are my go-to. I like the Align high rise short. These have pockets. There's a version without pockets. And the six inch inseam is my favorite, but they do have a four inch inseam. I just like, I like those extra two inches for me are the difference between chafing or not, especially if I'm running. So that's why I usually go with the six inch. And I... I also think that you should maybe look at what is the brand with the rabbit on it? Why can't I? It's a Boston
Kelly Matkovich:
Yep,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
brand.
Kelly Matkovich:
Run Rabbit. Isn't it called Run
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
No,
Kelly Matkovich:
Rabbit?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
there is a Run Rabbit. We lost Julia. We were going to introduce.
Dana:
I'm sorry.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Run Rabbit, Run Rabbit. I'm Googling. We're going to find
Kelly Matkovich:
Oh.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
this. We're Googling www.runrabbit.com. Rabbit ready.
Kelly Matkovich:
There is a run rabbit one. I the other thing I struggle with and this is just like a me and my body issue is that I like a brief lining but sometimes they I am constantly picking a wedgie when I'm
Dana:
Hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Mm-hmm.
Kelly Matkovich:
running. I can't find a big enough size or it won't stay so I'm like, can there be some kind of elastic that's like stays put?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Ooh, I
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
feel like you're...
Dana:
I would think that's a fair requirement.
Kelly Matkovich:
or like some kind
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I think.
Kelly Matkovich:
of rubber grip that's more gripping.
Dana:
No one wants a running wedgie.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
No.
Kelly Matkovich:
No.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Run Rabbit is a brand and also the brand I was trying to think of was TrackSmith.
Dana:
Mm-mm.
Kelly Matkovich:
Oh, yes.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
They
Kelly Matkovich:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
have more like, I feel like it's kind of retro track apparel and I like, I don't normally like a brief in a shirt, but I like the briefs in their running shorts. But the Align shorts, I think you can wear without underwear and without, if you are Team Commando, without underwear and without a brief. Okay. Wait, do you know anything else about shorts?
Dana:
Not really, but I am excited to hear the results because I will say this is tangential of this, but I just reorganized my like, I had like, I had loungewear separated from like, work from home stuff. And then I was just like, it was just like confusing. So I just reorganized this morning. And like now I have more of like work from home loungewear and then like workout class. stuff because like those are different and like workout class life running errands. So loosely it's like indoor and outdoor clothes, but reorganization. And now I like can see what I actually need now that I am hopefully going to work out more in the summer. So I'm all for the running short recommendations as well because I get really hot in leggings in the summer.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Poof. Okay, Kelly, this is gonna be an ongoing saga. I really feel like we're gonna have a summer of running shorts for Kelly. Before we move on, do you have an idea of what you're wearing race day for your trail half marathon?
Dana:
Hmm.
Kelly Matkovich:
Yes, well, I bought a bunch of stuff so I but it's weak of so I know you're not supposed to change attire a week
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah!
Kelly Matkovich:
of but I have a pair of shorts that are from Amazon that are that are fine that I'll probably wear I'll probably wear. I have these Viori t shirts that I'm obsessed with that I'll probably wear that I have on running cloud ultra shoes that I love and I'll wear a little and a hat.
Dana:
How cute will you be? So cute. Our
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
sleep.
Dana:
little trail running
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Mountain
Dana:
Kelly.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Kelly.
Dana:
Mountain Kelly.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Mountain Kelly!
Dana:
Colorado Kelly coming in hot.
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm sorry.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah, I can't wait to see, you know, how much
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
fun you have
Dana:
by
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
on race
Dana:
the time
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
day.
Dana:
of this recording, we will have a picture of
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
Kelly on race
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh
Dana:

Jeana Anderson Cohen:

Dana:
on our Instagram. So please go visit it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh
Kelly Matkovich:
Hehehehe
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
my gosh,
Dana:
Go
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Kelly,
Dana:
like
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
we're
Dana:
it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
gonna include definitely
Dana:
And
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
a picture
Dana:
maybe
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
of you.
Dana:
we'll drop the winning pair of shorts in the comments of
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Mm-hmm.
Dana:
that post. Should Kelly find it by then.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Thank you for strategizing for our social media posts for the week of this episode coming out. Okay, Dana, co-working space. Kelly, thank you for bringing shorts. I think we're gonna learn a lot from the community on that. Dana, co-working spaces is your topic. What do you, I revealed it for you. Oh my God.
Dana:
No, it's okay. It's probably fine. Spoiler alert, everyone. It's okay. No, it's, it's good. I feel like it's a good topic and time for this. Cause like, I guess I'm just curious, like, and we've talked a lot about this internally, but I think it's a good conversation that I feel like everyone's experiencing that now we're, you know, post COVID and like things of, I feel like settled down of like, if you're going back to the office, you're back. If you're not, you're not like some companies. I know my brother's company actually just started going back. So maybe I'm wrong with that. They're a big, big company. So maybe it takes longer, obviously, for some of these big companies. But I feel like people have kind of settled into this like weird work from home hybrid thing that we're just in now forever. And I like literally, I mean, I quit my job in 2021 because I had to go back to the office, like not fully, but that was a big impetus for it and that I was like, no, I can't, I just can't. And now I work fully from home. I was a member of Soho House in Chicago before I moved to California. And then again, when I moved home and I just, that membership expired, I did not renew it. So that just expired yesterday. So now
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
own.
Dana:
I'm kind of in search of something because as summer's coming, I know I don't wanna be in my apartment all the time. I will say I love the luxury of having two screens. And like, I have a whole like office setup at home that I'm very- productive at home, but I just don't want to be looking at a beautiful blue sky outside my window the whole summer. So I'm like all ears. I know Gina, you have a lot to say on this topic because you've been testing some different things, but just kind of where you guys are at in terms of how many days a week do you work from home? How often are you working just from coffee shops? I think this is something we'll also take to the community of ideas of co-working spaces. I definitely want to explore Hoxton, which I know Gina you'll talk about, and Bond Collective, which we are having an event at in Chicago during sweat working week. Gina and I just went there last week to check it out and film some content. It was beautiful. So I'm definitely in the market for potentially a co-working space or third alternative thoughts. Gina, Kelly?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Kelly, do you wanna weigh in first on your work
Kelly Matkovich:
No, you
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
from
Kelly Matkovich:
go.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
home
Kelly Matkovich:
You
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
situation?
Kelly Matkovich:
go.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay, fine. My work from home. So I have, it's kind of like a rotating schedule with my husband. We have two shared workspaces. Allow me to get comfortable.
Dana:
Didn't want to upset workspaces.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
So we have our office at home, which has a monitor. a laptop stand, an external keyboard and an external mouse, which I was really stubborn about using until last week and I realized like how much better it was. And then we also have, and I've talked about this before in case you recall, but we also have a membership to the coworking space called Working From at the Hoxton. It's called the Relay Membership. And so that means like one of us can be at the space any given time, not both of us. And then with that, we have like a desk. So we have a dedicated desk where we also have a monitor, a laptop stand, a keyboard, and a mouse. So no matter who is at home and who is in the coworking space, we are both like equally tricked out. And then we also have, in our building, we have an ample amount of
Dana:
Mm-hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
spaces around where we can. co-work. We live in a building that has two towers and a big outdoor terrace. So when it's nice out, like it is now, sometimes I'll work by the pool. If I don't feel like walking three blocks down the street. Sometimes I'll work by the pool, sometimes I'll work in one of the indoor co-working spaces. We have a lot of options, but we sort of switch off who goes to the hockstead and who stays at home. So it'll be like... Two days a week, I go, or three days a week, I go. This week it's gonna be two days I go, because it's Monday and I'm home.
Dana:
Yeah. Are there like days of the week that you prefer to be home or like it doesn't really matter?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Well, I like to be out of home on Friday. Kelly and I try to practice No Meeting Friday. Sometimes that gets blown up, like this week it will for me because I am out of town next week. So I'll open up No Meeting Friday and take meetings. But usually if we have a No Meeting Friday and we stick to it and there are no meetings, I get a ton done that day, but I'd like to be like not in my space for that, AKA like. not in a barking distance of the dogs, so that I'm not the one responsible for the puppy.
Dana:
Yeah, that's fair. That's fair.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
Yeah. And I have a lot of co-working spaces in my place too. And that's I think we've told the audience this, but Jean and I are neighbors. And so I do I think my biggest thing is I like to go outside, but my computer dies so fast in the
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
sun. And then it's like I find a charger. It's like it ends up being like a hassle instead of this like. Relaxing like, oh, look at me, I'm working outside. So what about you,
Kelly Matkovich:
I
Dana:
Kelly?
Kelly Matkovich:
know I feel like computers, I don't know why they're the battery life's not longer. I feel like they should be way
Dana:
Yeah.
Kelly Matkovich:
longer than or maybe
Dana:
Apple,
Kelly Matkovich:
it's just
Dana:
are
Kelly Matkovich:
my
Dana:
you
Kelly Matkovich:
computer,
Dana:
listening
Kelly Matkovich:
my computer.
Dana:
to this podcast?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Of
Dana:
Cause
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
course
Dana:
you
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
they
Dana:
should
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
are.
Dana:
be.
Kelly Matkovich:
Like I always need an outlet if I would go so many more places if it didn't die right away.
Dana:
Yeah!
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Who should we email
Kelly Matkovich:
I,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
at Apple about that?
Kelly Matkovich:
yeah, well, I don't have an apple, but whatever.
Dana:
Yeah, also Apple, if you're listening, why do I have to charge my mouse on the bottom? Like that is the absolute
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I'm going to go ahead and close the video.
Dana:
worst user functionality I've ever heard of in my life. Try harder, Apple.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
And also, why do you keep changing your charger?
Dana:
Yeah, like stop it, get out of here with that. Sorry, Kelly.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
one charger. Anyway, can't believe what we're saying.
Kelly Matkovich:
I am just I just work out of my home office. I don't move. I stay here. I think part of me so my first like job out of college that I was at forever I was always in office. And then I was kind of doing contract work. So I was working from home. And then when I started with us, like we were like, mostly at Gina's house and then also at the Hoxton. And now that like I moved into a home where we can I actually have an office space. I that was like one of the first rooms I like decorated and built out and I love it so much. I love having two screens. I hate having to like move everything if I'm going somewhere. So I just like home office all the time. I do have a friend in town who has a co working space and I'm like sometimes should I go over there just to socialize but I I don't I just like stay put I'm just here. I
Dana:
Oh,
Kelly Matkovich:
did love
Dana:
that's
Kelly Matkovich:
the Hoxton.
Dana:
interesting to me about you, Kelly. I don't know why I would have, I mean, even though, yes, you usually do have the same backdrop when we're on calls, like I don't, I guess I assumed you were as adventurous as you are in your play life and your work life, but that makes sense. And I feel like I'm kind of more of a creature of habit. And that's why I can never commit to a coworking space because I'm like, I don't want to actually go. But I also feel like if I had a nice coworking space that I liked, maybe I would go more. But again, I guess it doesn't get me out of my, I guess it gets me out of my apartment, but not like in the sunshine. Basically, I just need to work in a bubble outside so I can get tan, but my computer
Kelly Matkovich:
Ha ha!
Dana:
doesn't lose battery. So this is an ongoing conversation and a request from the audience in our community of if you, if you know, kind of how worried you guys work and what's going on, how are people living nowadays? You know, I think it's just interesting, but I would like, I'm very excited someday to have like a home office with like a door and like be able to really decorate it as a separate space.
Kelly Matkovich:
Mm-hmm.
Dana:
not to mention the tax write-offs.
Kelly Matkovich:
Hahaha.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh my god, I'm an accountant
Dana:
hehehehe
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
right
Dana:
yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
there.
Dana:
right, exactly.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
And now joining us by the by is the Sweat Life Summer Intern, Julia Faustina Fernandez. Julia, let the listeners know what you're all about before we have you chime in.
Julia Fernandez:
Perfect, so hi, my name is Julia Faustina Fernandez, as Gina just said. I am a rising senior, that's so weird to say, at Boston University. I study advertising and sociology with a minor in journalism. I am born and raised and proud from the Philippines and on my spare time I love to cook, crochet, and go on little walks if the weather permits. And yeah, I'm very excited to be interning at A Sweat Life this summer.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay,
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Juliette,
Dana:
feel like you've
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yeah.
Dana:
nailed your pitch
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
over the last few days
Kelly Matkovich:
Mm-hmm.
Dana:
about yourself, Jiliya. That was very, that was great.
Julia Fernandez:
It was the training.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
That's exactly what I was gonna say too. Juliette, before we dive in, let us know, how do you work? Where do you like to work? Where do you spend your time?
Julia Fernandez:
Um, yeah, I like got in to your conversation while you guys were talking about having like your own space, like somewhere at home where you guys work. I am honestly like completely the opposite. Like I think you guys have seen in the meetings, I try to go to like a coffee shop or somewhere really different from my, from like my apartment just because I feel like I need that separation between home and work and like, or home and play. So throughout the school year, I would always stay in like our student center. It's called the GSC or the George Sherman. I can live there from like 9 a.m. up until they actually have to kick me out if I really need to get work done because I just feel if I'm home, like my TV is right there, it's over, like it's gone. I'm just gonna see it and be like, I'm gonna watch now, like I'm gonna rest even though I have so much things that I should be doing. So I really like separating or like having to walk far to like actually do work, whether it be like academic or like attending meetings with. You guys. Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Wait, that's actually really, I'm, that cued me to ask Dana something. Dana, is your desire to create separation between home and work, or is your desire to get outside?
Dana:
That's a great question. I think it's probably the second, because I was actually thinking about that. And I do think, like, I agree with what you just said, Julia. Like, I think I'd be more productive if I'm not at home, because even though I'm productive, because like, I like my space here, I do laundry, like, I'll make lunch. Like, I can take breaks a lot during the day because I'm home, and there's always things I could do to distract myself. In college, when I was your age, Julia, like, I would have to go to like a library or somewhere to like hole up for. to get stuff done. And I was always like a huge procrastinator and I would like leave like a 20 page paper to like the day before it was due. And then I'd be like, I'm just gonna go do it and like, do it. So I don't know, maybe I'm like craving just like an outside place to so I think it's going outside though, probably. Like leaving my house to be more productive.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Have you tried Dusk Pass, by the way?
Dana:
No, I-
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Desk pass is like class pass, but for coworking spaces. Yeah, so it's a great
Dana:
genius.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
way for you. Yeah, and you can like try out different spaces to see if they're the one for you.
Dana:
That's so, it's like, that's like, that's the best.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Duh.
Dana:
That's
Kelly Matkovich:
He.
Dana:
exactly what I needed. Thank you so much, Gina. That's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Well, the
Dana:
so cool.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
other thing I'm thinking is maybe you could make a little schedule of like the days you're going to be out of home and the days you're going to be in home and plan for the days you're going to be in home to take like a no computer walk. Because
Dana:
Mmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
if you're, if you're like craving outside time and you're craving separation from home, I think you need to solve both problems.
Dana:
Yeah, I think it's like regardless if I'm working from home all day. I can still like take a walk
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah, but you actually have to do it.
Dana:
See, that's where I get held up.
Kelly Matkovich:
Hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You actually have to do it. I think you can do it.
Dana:
Okay, thank you for your belief in me. No, this was helpful. Thank you guys.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay, great. Do you feel like you got the answer you needed for co-working?
Dana:
Yeah, I just think it's an interesting conversation in this here day and age.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Well, it's crazy because pre-COVID, I feel like coworking spaces were bustling
Dana:
Mm-hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
and they're kind of swinging back to bustling, which I kind of missed because I have coworkers, I have you guys, but we're all over the place and it's nice to have other people who are in your space and giving you energy. Okay,
Dana:
I agree.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
great. Shall we talk about my topic?
Dana:
guess.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay, this week I am bringing skincare routines. I want to know what your skincare routine is and how much time you spend on it. And I also want to know like when you wash your face. Is it, do you wash your face before bed and in the morning or no? And let's be really honest, should I go first or last?
Kelly Matkovich:
Mm-hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay. Okay.
Kelly Matkovich:
Go first.
Dana:
first go for it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
So I am, I have two speeds with skincare. I have like, I'm really good and I do every like an eight step routine at night and then like a two two step routine in the morning. At night I'm a mud water powder hold on hold up at night
Kelly Matkovich:
Gosh.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
at night I'm really focused on like getting off the makeup and whatever got on my skin from the day and then doing like serums I do a vitamin c serum a hyaluronic acid serum both from which skincare professionals are ready for me to upgrade from, but that's neither here nor there. I still like them. And
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
then,
Dana:
know I still do too.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yeah, it's affordable and I like them. And then an under eye because I'm 37. And then I use, the under eye is a brand that I just started using from Hay Day. They get me every time with their merch. area. I'll link to it in the show notes because I can't think of it right now. I know it starts with an eight. And then and like I use bubble wrap from Glossier for around my
Dana:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
lips. Then a moisturizer. Right now I'm really on Scarlett Johansson skincare line, which is called offset.
Dana:
I've
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
There's
Dana:
heard good things about that.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I know
Julia Fernandez:
So.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
wait, Julia. actually gave me a hot tip and I just bought the blush from Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty. I think it was in our second intern or internship interview you were like
Julia Fernandez:
It
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I
Julia Fernandez:
was.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
really love Rare Beauty.
Julia Fernandez:
It was. It was on
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah
Julia Fernandez:
our second one.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
they finally finally like backwater came through and I bought the soft pinch blush anyway skincare. So then I'll do like the offset Moisturizer the night cream and then you know, that's it. I go to bed and in the morning. It's just like quick Get it off Or like, you know like getting the oil off from sleeping and then put sunscreen on That's my skincare routine. It's kind of a lot But there I also go through phases where I do not even touch my face before going to bed But then I try to be better in them Kelly, what's your skincare routine?
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm pretty routine as far as like it doesn't change too much. But morning is I do I cleanse my face in the morning. I kind of I usually just splash it with water honestly I think. Unless yeah and then I do vitamin C moisturizer. It's so dry in Colorado. So I'm constantly spraying my face with like a spray mist or am moisturizing. And then SPF, always. Nighttime is cleanser. I use like a gentle hydrating cleanser. Sometimes retinol, a heavy moisturizer. And I think that's kinda it. And like lip balm. Sometimes I'll use like a hydration steamer thing. Facials, facial steamer.
Dana:
Mm-hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oof.
Kelly Matkovich:
But that's about it. That's about it.
Dana:
Is that
Kelly Matkovich:
Wait,
Dana:
in the morning
Kelly Matkovich:
Gina,
Dana:
or at night? That's in the morning.
Kelly Matkovich:
uh, nighttime, nighttime. Gina, you forgot to mention your new tool that you use under your eye.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh my gosh. It's getting more and more complicated. This is how you
Dana:
hehe
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
can tell, like we're just trying to keep, we're just trying to stay afloat.
Dana:
Yeah, basically.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Actually, I have three new things to talk about for my face. Four new things, oh my God. Okay, so this I love so much. I actually put on our, we're like tracking things we would want to gift this year for our holiday gift guide. So I'll give a little preview, but it's, I think it's French. It's the... L'Ange lip sleeping mask. If it's actually French, it would
Dana:
Hmm
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
be like L'Ange. Well, how is it pronounced, Julia? Do you know it?
Julia Fernandez:
I think it's Lawni, like the second way you pronounce it. I've just
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay.
Julia Fernandez:
been seeing that brand everywhere and my best friend is like super into skincare. So I see
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
that all over his like bathroom, it's crazy.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah, and the lip mask is incredible. It's just, I have both the water mask and the lip mask, and I'll put the water mask over my skincare. It's like slugging, but it actually is like a beneficial product. And then the lip mask is just like the plumpest, most beautiful lip scrub. I wanna use it all the time, but it's a premium product. So one should not use it like Vaseline. And then cryo spoon.
Dana:
Hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
So at our partner and friend Scratch Goods, I purchased a cryo spoon. I'll link to this in the show notes too. This is also probably gonna be our gift guy because I love it so much. But it's just like this heavy kind of metal. I think it's steel, who knows? It looks like kind of like the head of a golf club, but they come in sets of two. I just use one because I like to have a free hand. You put it in the freezer and then you put. like some under eye, you can use it for anything. You can use it for like headaches. You can use it for neck aches. I use it specifically for puffiness in the morning under my eyes, but I'll put like a coffee mask from scratch goods, which I'll link to in the show notes. And then the cryo spoon, I'll just run from like the inside of my eye out. And it just feels so good. Even if my eyes are puffy, it feels incredible. And then yesterday,
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm gonna go to bed.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I was at Hay Day and I got an LED light for my, because they were selling like these LED face masks. So I used it to time my meditation this morning. This is the goopy as shit I've ever said, but that's true. there was more to
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
add,
Dana:
love it.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
you're right, Kelly. Okay, Dana, what's your skincare routine?
Dana:
the opposite of you, Gina, because I do more in the morning and less at night. So I'm a nighttime shower. So I feel like I wash my face, but I always take my makeup and wash my face before bed. So if
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
I am sleeping at home, I get to do all my whole routine. If I'm sleeping at my boyfriend's, I bought these like exfoliating wipes that just take everything off, but I have to like, I always take my stuff off. In the morning, I wash, I kind of alternate, like I'll rotate different. products, I get fat fit fun box. So like if I get a full size product in there, I'll try it. I live across the street from an Ulta, which is very dangerous. So like I'll always try new things. But, and I'm pretty lucky that like my skin, I can like try different stuff and I don't have to use the same product. I use Indie Lee brightening face wash right now. I mean, I, I, I used to work with Indie Lee long, long, long ago when she first started her brand and helped her with their social media. She's a great lady and also a great brand. So I will always support them. I bought that at Hay Day. And then I use a moisturizing, like a hydrating mist. I always do that. It's mine's by Glossier and I love it. It's like a rose water face mist, but I also love the one by, I never know if it's herbivore, herbivore, herbivore botanicals. I believe
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
or
Dana:
it's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
sounds
Dana:
herbivore.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
right to me, the age
Dana:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
is silent, so...
Dana:
Yeah. The H is silent. Yeah. I don't
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
..er,
Dana:
know
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
by
Dana:
why,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the way.
Dana:
but I'm like herbivore sounded. wrong in that context. But I do love that brand also. I use a, right now I'm using a moisturizer from, I believe it's like Watermelon Glow is the brand.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I believe.
Dana:
And then I use a, I don't actually remember the brand, but I'll find it for, I have this eye, an eye serum mask and I also put that on my lips. And then I do, I bought at, I'm dipping my toes in the kind of realm of retinol. Cause at Hay Day when I got my facial, I talked to them kind of about what I needed. And that was kind of what they said I should start using as a 34 year old lady. And so I bought the Moon Juice Plump something jelly. It's lovely. I love it
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Hi,
Dana:
so
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
hi, hi.
Dana:
much. So I do like three pumps of that in the morning. You're supposed to do it at night too, but I've only been using in the morning because I like wanted to last. So I've been doing that. And then at night, I do, I pretty much just wash my face and then I'll do a, I have an Ilya, like lip mask that you're supposed to sleep in. And then sometime, and then I do have a couple of face masks. You can sleep them out like that just because I get
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
like
Dana:
like,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it.
Dana:
it's just not super comfortable. But I do have, I do like an actual mask usually once a week. So I like Glossier. Their moisturizing moon mask is like my. favorite. I have to assume what like cold cream felt like back in like the 30s when women did cold cream because it's like always cold. I don't know whenever I put it on like my skin's like, but right
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
It's like
Dana:
now I'm
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
menthol.
Dana:
doing their, yeah, it's so good. And right now I have their green galaxy, like their other mask and I like it. It's more like exfoliating, but I like their moon moisturizing one other than that. So yeah, other than that, I don't think I don't wear face makeup though. So I do think that just like helps my my skin personally. So usually after that, and I should, and my heyday facialist did lecture me, I should be wearing sunscreen. I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You
Dana:
don't
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
aren't
Dana:
wear
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
wearing
Dana:
SPF.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
sunscreen?
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh
Dana:
don't
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
my
Dana:
wear SPF and it's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
god.
Dana:
like terrible. And I know when I'm approaching 35 and I probably should be wearing SPF, but.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You know who should be wearing SPF? Us in the past.
Dana:
Yes,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
And
Dana:
totally.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
now we're just making
Dana:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
up for it.
Dana:
Yeah. But I think that, you know, other than that, I think I take pretty good care.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I want to, we just, I just want you all to know the references, the like, all of the links. It's a growing list. So
Dana:
We're
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it's
Dana:
basically
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
basically,
Dana:
just going
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yeah,
Dana:
to tell you all exactly the products we use.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it's just a lot of skincare. Okay, Julia, do you want to talk about your skincare routine?
Julia Fernandez:
I would love to talk about my skincare routine, but it's very different from I feel like what everyone has said, because I honestly only got into skincare this year because of the best friend that I talked about who also likes Lunege, I am
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah,
Julia Fernandez:
so sorry
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
they're
Julia Fernandez:
if I'm
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
not.
Julia Fernandez:
like butchering that brand's name, because he has been on me and being like Julia, please do skincare and he's the only reason I've been consistent right now. So I have like a very, very basic routine. So I take a shower at the night too. And while in the shower, I like cleanse my face and depending if I put makeup on that day, I'll like double cleanse. I hop off the shower and I do moisturizer and recently added vitamin C.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Hmm
Julia Fernandez:
And then depending if it was like a bad day, like if Boston was super cold and it had like, it was winter, I would put on like Vaseline on my lips. But if not, I just go to sleep. And then I wake up in the morning, wash my face with literally just water, brush my teeth, put on SPF because I can hear my best friend, his name is Elijah, I will send him this
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Hey, Elijah.
Julia Fernandez:
and I'll be like, hi Elijah, I get to talk about this because you put me on skincare. And I like hear his voice at the back of my head being like Julia sunblock, sunscreen, you have to put SPF. So now I cannot leave the house without putting SPF and that is honestly all on him. Like thank you Elijah
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Thank you, Elijah.
Julia Fernandez:
for. giving me a skincare, but yeah, that's about my skincare routine. I use a brand called ITK. It stands for In the Know. I just get it off Walmart and it's a brand that I haven't like broken out in. So I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Mmm.
Julia Fernandez:
think I just like stay with it. So I switch between that and CeraVe because I have really like sensitive skin and their hydrating cleanser like just really helps with my skin and I have felt like a difference when I started using like those products. So that is my skin care routine.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Amazing.
Dana:
That's impressive, because I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
didn't even know what a skincare routine was in college. I was sleeping with my makeup. I was like, yeah, I was not. I
Julia Fernandez:
That was...
Dana:
definitely could not name a product that I was using.
Julia Fernandez:
That was honestly me until I met Elijah and he was like, you don't do anything before
Dana:
So
Julia Fernandez:
you
Dana:
you're
Julia Fernandez:
sleep.
Dana:
saying we all need an Elijah in our lives.
Julia Fernandez:
Honestly, yeah, cause
Kelly Matkovich:
Ha ha ha.
Julia Fernandez:
I knew nothing until he passed, he came to my place and he looked at my bathroom and was like, how do you take off your makeup? And I was like, in the shower, I assume that everything just goes away at one point.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Break
Julia Fernandez:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
down the drain. Is that not it? Is that not the drain? Oh my
Julia Fernandez:
Apparently not.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
God. Oh my God. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I also wanna point out one other product I didn't mention by name Daybird. Daybird.
Dana:
Oh yes.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
So Daybird we love. They're out of Austin, Texas. It's founded by two women of color who wanted sunscreen with moisturizer and a tint that worked for. a broad spectrum of humans. I think it takes a little testing to figure out your exact shade. Kelly went too light last time, so we need to get Kelly in shade number two, I think. Dana, you're probably in number two. Julia, you are a three. I am a one. And we can... The founders are... They list their shades too, so you can compare to them as well. And they... The product I love. I feel like it is just enough... tint for your skin and it evens it out. It's almost like a night out
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
for me
Dana:
I definitely
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
because
Dana:
want,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I don't
Dana:
I think
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
really
Dana:
that's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
like this
Dana:
gonna
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
foundation.
Dana:
be how I'm gonna start to get my SPF because I know the community has been loving it.
Kelly Matkovich:
Wait, I have
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Wait,
Kelly Matkovich:
two
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Julia,
Kelly Matkovich:
additional, I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
oh go ahead.
Kelly Matkovich:
have two additional
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yes,
Kelly Matkovich:
hot
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Kelly.
Kelly Matkovich:
tips. This is mostly to Dana since we both use like a rose water spray. The brand now, which is they do a lot of vitamins and stuff. They have one and it's $6 and it's honestly the best one. And when it comes to like rose water, it's honestly like, if you're, you
Dana:
Yeah,
Kelly Matkovich:
know,
Dana:
it's
Kelly Matkovich:
some
Dana:
like,
Kelly Matkovich:
of those get
Dana:
that's,
Kelly Matkovich:
like 20
Dana:
yeah.
Kelly Matkovich:
or $30 for water, but it feels so good. So I highly recommend that one. And someone told me once about a tip about you know, because sometimes you get tired before bed and like, you don't want to do anything. And they're like, you can do your nighttime routine. Like anytime, it doesn't have to be like right before bed. So say like you went and worked out and like at home and you're about to eat dinner, you can do your nighttime routine then before you're like tired. And then it's done. So I was like, I always, I forget that tip,
Dana:
So smart.
Kelly Matkovich:
but I think it's such a good one. Yeah.
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Actually,
Dana:
love that.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
that's a nice way to give yourself grace too. Cause I think
Julia Fernandez:
It is.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
a lot of times like all work out at like six and then shower and like do my skincare. But then in my head I'm like, oh, I didn't do my skincare, but I did.
Dana:
Yeah. And who's making these rules? Just us.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah, we make the rules. We make the rules. Okay, should we talk about our tiny topic?
Dana:
Mm-hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yes, I'm seeing some heads nod. Julia made a big smile. This is very exciting. Our tiny topic this week is rom-coms. I wanna know what your favorite in your formative years was, and if you've watched or rewatched any lately. Julia, you're new around here. Do you wanna go first or last?
Julia Fernandez:
I think I can go first because I honestly don't watch a lot of movies, but when you talked about rom-coms, I was like, these are things I can watch over and over again and I will be completely fine. And Dana like talked about this, but and put it on her little thing, but 10 Things I Hate About You has a
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah,
Julia Fernandez:
special
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yeah, yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
place in my heart. That was just, it's just such a nice rom-com because there's like a lot of side stories, but it's still like talks about like. the two main characters and I just love the promposal scene where he like gets the
Dana:
Hmm
Julia Fernandez:
whole band and like just asks Kate out to prom. It was like just a really nice show and it's like such a light watch that I can just go back and be like aww. It's not your typical like how a guy meets a girl and ends up together and I think it's just a really nice rom-com to go back and watch.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
What's amazing is you can tell how much someone really loves a rom-com by whether or not they know the main character's name like that. And
Dana:
Oh
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
when
Dana:
yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Juliet just said Kate, I was like, I wouldn't have known the main character's name because I haven't seen it in a while. I did know it was based on the taming of
Julia Fernandez:
Thank
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the
Julia Fernandez:
you
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
shrew.
Julia Fernandez:
for watching.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
Mm-hmm.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
By Shikasphere. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt's in it. Like, the cast is incredible.
Dana:
Yeah, great cast, yeah.
Kelly Matkovich:
Heath Ledger,
Julia Fernandez:
Yeah,
Dana:
The
Kelly Matkovich:
RIP.
Dana:
dearly
Julia Fernandez:
I hate Ledger
Dana:
departed
Julia Fernandez:
in it.
Dana:
love of my life, Heath Ledger, yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
Exactly, he
Dana:
Yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
was so good there.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
He was so good. He was also like every movie he was in, in the rom-com genre, really he was
Dana:
Yeah, he
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
lovable.
Dana:
really knew how to elevate a rom-com.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
He really
Dana:
Yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
Yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
did. Rest in peace. Okay, I love that. 10 Things I Hate About You. Okay, Dana, tell us yours.
Dana:
So yes, I was also big 10 things I hate about you. Like I said 11 times in theaters. That was the most I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Hahaha
Dana:
ever saw a movie in theaters. I know that number off the top of my head because that's how many times I saw it in theaters. So I was a big one. I was also big. I literally use the acronym in this deck and it's a bad one, but how to lose a guy in 10 days. That was what I was trying to write in this document.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I got it.
Dana:
That's a great one. Like I, that will always be like, if it's on TV, I will stop whatever I'm doing. to watch
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
it because I always find it delightful. Just like truly like whether or not I'm like, oh, it's the best movie of all time. No, but I love it. Like it always makes me laugh. I quote it a lot, just like randomly. And then if I'm looking at like a movie that I think like holds the test, like stands the test of time of rom-coms to me, it's like the like highest pinnacle is when Harry Met Sally. I love that movie so much. And I like rewatched it. I wanna say over the winter cause it's always like a winter movie to me. And I know you also have this on your list, Gina, while you were sleeping, because that's another one that's like similar to this where it's like, I have to watch it every year, like it just fills me with such like, uh, I don't, it's just like, that's what a rom-com should be. It's perfect. It's like perfect to me. So I would say that one definitely still holds up. A lot of them still hold up, but some of them that you watch and you're like, wow, these are like super sexist, like the ones from the nineties, the two thousands, like I really like that. I mean, there's definitely things you watch and you're like, You can, like, I wouldn't watch this now. Or like, I wouldn't, like, if that came out now, people would be like, not into it. Um, but I do like the trend right now happening of people who started rom-coms in the nineties and two thousands that were a little sexist maybe. But they're the, these same women, JLo, Reese Witherspoon, um, I know there's more are like starring rom-coms now. and almost like reclaiming it. And now the trope is like, maybe it's like an older woman with a younger man, or maybe it's a young older woman rediscovering herself, or like it's complicated. One of my all time favorites, watched that one recently. Like I love a Nancy Myers. So I really love when there's like a, like an empowerment angle to something there. And I think that's why I like 10 things I hate about you so much when I was younger, cause I was like, she's a bad ass. Like she got the guy,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
but also she like kind
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
of just was fine on her own. And I love that. So. I don't love when it's all about like getting the guy. I'm like, that's old. That's been there, done that, but like add a little more intrigue and I'm in.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Huh?
Dana:
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk on Romcoms. I've been prepping
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah!
Dana:
for this tiny topic all week.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Kelly, what do you have to say about romcoms?
Kelly Matkovich:
also love 10 things I hate about you such a great one. I also mentioned just friends earlier, which is also considered like a Christmas movie, but I just love it. It's with Ryan Reynolds. I don't know. I just watched that one a million times. She's all that. That's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh
Kelly Matkovich:
a
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yeah.
Kelly Matkovich:
classic.
Dana:
Oh
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm
Dana:
yeah,
Kelly Matkovich:
sure it's
Dana:
classic.
Kelly Matkovich:
like I haven't watched it in a while. But I have watched the reboot of he's all that which features an Instagram or a tick tocker, Addison Rae and it's it's pretty it's okay. It's you know, it is it is what it is. Um, it's a movie.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
movie.
Dana:
It is a movie.
Kelly Matkovich:
Uh,
Julia Fernandez:
It's a movie.
Kelly Matkovich:
I think one of my favorite rom-coms is actually the wedding singer. I think it's classic. I love drew Barrymore.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yes!
Kelly Matkovich:
I love Adam Sandler and drew Barrymore. They're such a,
Dana:
Mm-hmm.
Kelly Matkovich:
this classic rom-com
Dana:
Yeah.
Kelly Matkovich:
couple. They've done so many movies together and I'm obsessed with them. And I loved wedding singer. So good.
Dana:
That's
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
51st
Dana:
such a good
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
date
Dana:
movie.
Kelly Matkovich:
51st
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
51st
Julia Fernandez:
51st
Kelly Matkovich:
dates.
Dana:
yeah.
Kelly Matkovich:
Yes.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
dates.
Julia Fernandez:
dates!
Dana:
They have
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah,
Dana:
such like
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
how
Dana:
effortless
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
are we not? Oh
Dana:
chemistry.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
my god.
Dana:
Ooh,
Julia Fernandez:
They
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah
Dana:
also
Julia Fernandez:
really
Dana:
like
Julia Fernandez:
do.
Dana:
everything Drew Barrymore did like in the early 2000s, like fever
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
pitch, like everything she did in the early 2000s was just
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Never
Dana:
perfect.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
been kissed?
Dana:
Oh my God, Never Been Kissed, set in Chicago. It's a classic.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Ugh, I'm getting goosebumps.
Dana:
haha
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I love Never Been Kissed. She gives that little speech at the end. Every rom-com has a speech. Yeah,
Dana:
Every romcom has a speech. Every romcom has the moment. It's like
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the moment.
Dana:
15 minutes till the end where you think like, oh, it's over. Like they're broken
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
It's over.
Dana:
up. They are never speaking again just so it can get to that final
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
conclusion.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
And getting to my romcom, well one of them, in for example, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the speech is, I meant every word, where she describes, she's telling Ben Barry, character name that I remember,
Dana:
Andy
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
that
Dana:
Anderson
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the article,
Dana:
and Benjamin Barry, the best
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
yeah,
Dana:
advertising names
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the
Dana:
ever.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
best. Well, she worked at a magazine because she was a woman in a romcom.
Dana:
Oh
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
So
Dana:
yes,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
that's
Dana:
you're
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the
Dana:
right,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
only
Dana:
she
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
place
Dana:
worked
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
where
Dana:
in a
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
you
Dana:
magazine.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
can work.
Dana:
Yeah, she wanted to write about politics, but they would only
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
let her write about shoes.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Shoots. Whatever she wanted. As long as it's shoes,
Dana:
As long as
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
sex.
Dana:
it's shoes. Yes, exactly.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Um, and I, that scene is so delightful, but also like problematic in every way. One from a safety perspective and how to lose a guy in 10 days because her cab driver
Dana:
Yeah, they're like
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
pulls
Dana:
on a bridge.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
over on a bridge in New York City, that's dangerous, first of all. And second of all, she gets on his motorcycle with him? No, this guy, you barely know him.
Dana:
Well, she did meet his family though. So,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Ah, I don't
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
know.
Dana:
mean,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Ah, she
Dana:
I don't know.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
met
Dana:
She
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
his,
Dana:
met his family.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Wormative.
Dana:
That's basically what I envisioned going to Green Bay. We're just gonna play bullshit. I assume that's just what
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
We'll start
Dana:
you do
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
off.
Dana:
when you meet the parents. And...
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah, it's a true full
Dana:
And I'll
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
circle
Dana:
pull
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
moment.
Dana:
out a creepy album I made of our faces blended together and what our future children would look like.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I won't burn up!
Dana:
You let it die. So this is now a ho ho ho ho no, how to lose a guy
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
that
Dana:
in 10 days podcast.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
we're just going to break down two minutes of How to Lose a Guy in 10 days at a time for the
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
next
Kelly Matkovich:
I'm gonna
Dana:
imagine
Kelly Matkovich:
go.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
season.
Dana:
if you had never seen it before and now someone is like, spoiler alert, like now they already
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
with
Dana:
know
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
her alert.
Dana:
about this whole movie.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
She might move to DC, because that's the only place she can do what she wants to do, and he says, bullshit.
Dana:
Bullshit.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Anyway. Another very important wrong comment to me is while you were sleeping. That one is Sandi Bullock, I think really at her finest, right after speed. So it was like, she caught fire after speed, got leading lady role. also based in Chicago on, I think that might've been what you were saying in the beginning, but while you were sleeping, and she falls in love with a man in a coma. And that's, you know, just what one does.
Dana:
Or does she? Maybe you should watch it and find out.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
oh! dun
Dana:
You
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
dun
Dana:
know.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
dun!
Dana:
Dun-dun.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
she pulled the ol' brother bait and switch, which
Dana:
Oh,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
is a
Dana:
she
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
move
Dana:
does.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
i
Dana:
Oh,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
loved to
Dana:
another
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
you!
Dana:
great one about meeting parents.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You never know if you're gonna actually. Julia, now that you've heard all of our romcom takes, do you still wanna work here?
Julia Fernandez:
I have now so much movies that I will be watching in a couple of weekends.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh, okay, old tech alert. All of them are gonna have landlines, just so
Dana:
No,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
you know.
Dana:
yes, yes, yeah, don't be triggered. It's called
Julia Fernandez:
I
Dana:
a
Julia Fernandez:
still
Dana:
beeper.
Julia Fernandez:
have, there's one
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Oh,
Julia Fernandez:
here.
Kelly Matkovich:
Oh,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
you
Kelly Matkovich:
you
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
have
Kelly Matkovich:
have
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
a landline.
Kelly Matkovich:
a landline? Ahaha!
Julia Fernandez:
There's one in my apartment.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
For
Julia Fernandez:
I haven't,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
the listener, Julia
Julia Fernandez:
I have not.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
has a landline. Why do you have a landline?
Julia Fernandez:
I don't know. I moved in here and it was there. And I honestly didn't know it was there until we had a
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You
Julia Fernandez:
dinner.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
didn't even notice it.
Julia Fernandez:
I didn't notice it and someone hit it and the phone fell. And they were like, Julia, I hit your landline. And I like was in the kitchen and I had whiplash and I was like, I have a what?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I'm sorry.
Julia Fernandez:
It's just right
Dana:
Oh
Julia Fernandez:
there.
Dana:
my God,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You guys,
Dana:
you should put
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Gen
Dana:
like
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Z doesn't
Dana:
a...
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
even see landlines.
Dana:
No, I
Kelly Matkovich:
Just...
Dana:
was gonna say you should put like a clear box around it like it's like an artificial, like a relic from the past.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yes.
Dana:
Like,
Julia Fernandez:
It's
Dana:
let's
Julia Fernandez:
an
Dana:
not
Julia Fernandez:
art.
Dana:
touch it.
Julia Fernandez:
Yeah,
Kelly Matkovich:
Does
Julia Fernandez:
it's
Dana:
Oh
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Let's
Julia Fernandez:
an
Kelly Matkovich:
anyone
Dana:
my
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
not
Julia Fernandez:
artwork.
Dana:
gosh.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
touch
Kelly Matkovich:
call
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it.
Kelly Matkovich:
it? Do you ever get
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah,
Kelly Matkovich:
calls
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
does it ring?
Kelly Matkovich:
on it?
Julia Fernandez:
I've never gotten a call on it. Honestly, the day that happens, I think I'll message like our group chat immediately and be like, guys, my landline got a call.
Dana:
my landline rang.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You know the phone number? This is really interesting.
Julia Fernandez:
I don't.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
You don't know the phone number.
Julia Fernandez:
I don't. They didn't
Dana:
So it'd
Julia Fernandez:
even
Dana:
be even
Julia Fernandez:
tell
Dana:
crazier
Julia Fernandez:
me it was
Dana:
if
Julia Fernandez:
there.
Dana:
someone did call you.
Julia Fernandez:
And I'd just be like, hello?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Wait, so when you pick it up, is there a dial tone or no? Like, does that thing have service?
Julia Fernandez:
I'm not sure. Maybe I should
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
This
Julia Fernandez:
check
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
could
Julia Fernandez:
that.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
be a good thing to do live. Julia, we
Julia Fernandez:
Okay,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
need to know. We need
Julia Fernandez:
give me
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
to know.
Julia Fernandez:
one second.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Okay, we'll wait. We'll wait.
Dana:
I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
This
Dana:
love
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
is really
Dana:
how the
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
important.
Dana:
youngest one here has a landline.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I know.
Dana:
I guess there's no dial tone.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
I guess
Dana:
If
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
there's
Dana:
there
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
no
Dana:
is
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
dial
Dana:
a dial
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
tone.
Dana:
tone, that's kind of creepy.
Julia Fernandez:
It does
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
not have service. It
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
It
Julia Fernandez:
is
Kelly Matkovich:
Okay.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
does
Julia Fernandez:
not
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
not
Julia Fernandez:
beeping.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
have service.
Dana:
Yeah,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Cause
Dana:
that almost
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
guess
Dana:
makes
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
what?
Dana:
me feel
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Those.
Dana:
better, because if it did,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
that'd be like, who set it up?
Julia Fernandez:
Exactly,
Dana:
Is this the Black
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
okay.
Dana:
phone?
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Why?
Dana:
That
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Dana:
movie I
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
And
Dana:
didn't
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
also
Dana:
watch,
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
you'd
Dana:
but.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
be getting, you'd be getting sales calls to your landline, which would be so annoying. You'd probably.
Dana:
Robo calls,
Julia Fernandez:
Yeah,
Dana:
yeah.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Yeah.
Julia Fernandez:
I think it is just
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
Anyway,
Julia Fernandez:
the relic.
Jeana Anderson Cohen:
it's just a relic. It's just an artifact from the past. Well, this has been another episode of We Got Goals. It's just in a sweatlife.com production. And another thing that's better with friends. Thanks to Ryan Deffit for editing, to Ryan Baryuga for video editing. Thanks to Kelly, Dana and Julia for joining me this week. And thanks to all of you, our listeners, for subscribing, rating and reviewing wherever you get your podcasts. Bye-bye.
Dana:
Bye.
Julia Fernandez:
Bye.
