00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,480
Welcome to Top 5 Tech, my weekly show sharing something to watch, listen to, read, download,
2
00:00:04,480 --> 00:00:05,839
and something deep every week.
3
00:00:05,839 --> 00:00:11,080
By the way, you can now watch this in Apple Podcasts Video or Spotify Video or Audio,
4
00:00:11,080 --> 00:00:13,679
or of course you can listen wherever you get your podcasts.
5
00:00:13,679 --> 00:00:15,160
Number one, something to watch.
6
00:00:15,160 --> 00:00:19,320
John Oliver actually did a segment on his show last week tonight all about AI chatbots.
7
00:00:19,320 --> 00:00:22,600
And you may or may not like John Oliver, but some of the stories and reporting that he
8
00:00:22,600 --> 00:00:25,160
does during the segment, I think is pretty interesting.
9
00:00:25,160 --> 00:00:28,079
Again, a lot of language and some inappropriate content.
10
00:00:28,079 --> 00:00:29,940
So maybe don't watch with kids around.
11
00:00:30,179 --> 00:00:33,500
But there's a lot of clips and stories about real people using AI chatbots,
12
00:00:33,500 --> 00:00:36,799
even for things like emotional validation, facts and figures, like
13
00:00:36,799 --> 00:00:39,140
75% of kids have used a chatbot.
14
00:00:39,179 --> 00:00:41,859
And there's also clips of Sam Altman interviews, a clip of Casey
15
00:00:41,859 --> 00:00:43,380
Newton from his platformer show.
16
00:00:43,420 --> 00:00:46,920
It gives a good look of how maybe real people, meaning outside of the tech
17
00:00:46,920 --> 00:00:49,879
bubble, or those of us that listen to tech podcasts all the time, how they're
18
00:00:49,879 --> 00:00:54,100
thinking about AI chatbots and some of the guardrails that we need even now.
19
00:00:54,239 --> 00:00:56,620
And AI is definitely a big theme this week, because the thing you should
20
00:00:56,620 --> 00:00:58,340
listen to is Neelay Patel.
21
00:00:58,340 --> 00:01:00,340
he did an episode of the Decoder show as well.
22
00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:02,320
It's just a solo show, not an interview.
23
00:01:02,320 --> 00:01:04,859
It's called the people do not yearn for automation.
24
00:01:04,859 --> 00:01:08,039
He talks about how the industry is having software brain and the companies are trying
25
00:01:08,039 --> 00:01:11,799
to shove AI and automation down everyone's throats, and a lot of people are actually
26
00:01:11,799 --> 00:01:12,799
resisting it.
27
00:01:12,799 --> 00:01:16,780
But I do have some comments on this, I'm going to save for the deep portion of the episode,
28
00:01:16,780 --> 00:01:20,239
but you can either listen to this or watch it or read his article, I'll put links to
29
00:01:20,239 --> 00:01:21,560
all of that down below.
30
00:01:21,560 --> 00:01:25,180
On something to read, Mac Rumors released this article after we recorded this week's
31
00:01:25,180 --> 00:01:30,060
primary technology, saying Apple has given up on the Vision Pro after the M5 refurbished.
32
00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:36,500
Now, we all know Apple Vision Pro has not sold some crazy amount and is definitely not pervasive or ubiquitous,
33
00:01:36,500 --> 00:01:38,799
but it also seems really early to say it's canceled.
34
00:01:38,799 --> 00:01:43,500
And interestingly, Jon Prosser, the leaker who is currently in the middle of a court case with Apple,
35
00:01:43,500 --> 00:01:48,799
with Apple suing him for the iOS 26 leaks, he just tweeted, "Vision Pro ain't dead fam."
36
00:01:48,799 --> 00:01:50,500
That's what he said verbatim.
37
00:01:50,500 --> 00:01:53,700
So I'm really curious about this story. I would read the MacRumors article,
38
00:01:53,700 --> 00:01:58,000
maybe take it with a grain of salt. We'll have to see what the long-term plan is for Vision Pro.
39
00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:00,000
Because MacRumors also shared this article
40
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:02,000
saying Apple is reportedly questioning
41
00:02:02,000 --> 00:02:04,000
whether they should drop MagSafe
42
00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:06,000
and this seems like a more bizarre story
43
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:08,000
especially the 17E just got MagSafe
44
00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:10,000
where the 16E did not
45
00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:12,000
and the MagSafe accessory market
46
00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:14,000
both accessories that Apple makes
47
00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:16,000
and the third party ecosystem
48
00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:18,000
doesn't seem like it's going anywhere anytime soon
49
00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:20,000
so not sure about this but the Vision Pro story
50
00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:22,000
I'm curious about
51
00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:24,000
On what to download, I have a shortcut for you this week
52
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:26,000
and I think it's pretty fun
53
00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:28,000
I call this my basic gradient wallpaper
54
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:30,000
several of the pages from Basic App
55
00:02:30,840 --> 00:02:33,400
where he has lots of amazing wallpapers, even for free.
56
00:02:33,400 --> 00:02:35,400
And this shortcut is actually going to randomize
57
00:02:35,400 --> 00:02:38,400
what wallpaper you get from about five different collections.
58
00:02:38,400 --> 00:02:40,400
It has gradients of September and February.
59
00:02:40,400 --> 00:02:42,400
It has the sound wave.
60
00:02:42,400 --> 00:02:44,400
And this is going to just get a random one
61
00:02:44,400 --> 00:02:46,400
and set it as your wallpaper.
62
00:02:46,400 --> 00:02:48,400
And the best part is, it's automatically going to recognize
63
00:02:48,400 --> 00:02:50,400
what device you're running this shortcut on
64
00:02:50,400 --> 00:02:54,400
and get the wallpaper formatted properly for that device.
65
00:02:54,400 --> 00:02:56,400
And now, every time I run this shortcut,
66
00:02:56,400 --> 00:02:58,400
it's going to pull a random wallpaper,
67
00:02:58,400 --> 00:03:00,159
to the device that I'm running the shortcut on.
68
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:01,759
And it changes that quickly.
69
00:03:01,759 --> 00:03:03,000
If you're on an iPhone or iPad,
70
00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:04,360
you'll have to choose your lock screen,
71
00:03:04,360 --> 00:03:05,840
home screen combination to make sure
72
00:03:05,840 --> 00:03:07,240
it's changing the right one.
73
00:03:07,240 --> 00:03:09,039
But you can even automate this to run every morning
74
00:03:09,039 --> 00:03:10,879
and wake up to a really nice wallpaper
75
00:03:10,879 --> 00:03:12,080
from BasicAppleGuy.
76
00:03:12,080 --> 00:03:13,300
I'm also wearing BasicAppleGuy's
77
00:03:13,300 --> 00:03:14,759
little finder guide merch right now.
78
00:03:14,759 --> 00:03:16,079
All right, and finally, for something deep,
79
00:03:16,079 --> 00:03:19,900
going back to Neelat Patel's Decoder article/episode,
80
00:03:19,900 --> 00:03:22,159
John Gruber at Daring Fireball also linked to it,
81
00:03:22,159 --> 00:03:25,680
but commented on the whole AI software brain thing
82
00:03:25,680 --> 00:03:26,680
that's going on.
83
00:03:26,680 --> 00:03:29,500
And even as we talk about AI on primary technology,
84
00:03:30,020 --> 00:03:32,680
it is clear that so much of it is overhyped,
85
00:03:32,680 --> 00:03:35,419
both what the AI companies and brands are promising
86
00:03:35,419 --> 00:03:37,919
and saying what is capable using their products,
87
00:03:37,919 --> 00:03:40,400
and also just what real world people
88
00:03:40,400 --> 00:03:42,159
are being able to use these things for
89
00:03:42,159 --> 00:03:44,419
in their work and daily lives.
90
00:03:44,419 --> 00:03:45,680
So I wanted to make a video,
91
00:03:45,680 --> 00:03:47,560
and I'll link my video down below.
92
00:03:47,560 --> 00:03:49,120
I use AI every day.
93
00:03:49,120 --> 00:03:51,439
There's a bunch of tools that help speed up my process,
94
00:03:51,439 --> 00:03:52,659
whether I'm making videos.
95
00:03:52,659 --> 00:03:54,219
So there's a little me inception here,
96
00:03:54,219 --> 00:03:56,759
picture in picture of me here and down there.
97
00:03:56,759 --> 00:03:58,120
But I'll link my video on YouTube
98
00:03:58,120 --> 00:04:00,060
because I wanted to share about 15.
99
00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:04,280
using AI that's actually useful for my daily work.
100
00:04:04,639 --> 00:04:08,560
But I'll also fully admit that when you try to push AI beyond its limits,
101
00:04:08,800 --> 00:04:12,159
a lot of times it could be more trouble than it's worth or just take too much
102
00:04:12,159 --> 00:04:15,879
finicky messing around and it would just be faster if you did it yourself,
103
00:04:16,000 --> 00:04:19,399
quote unquote manually. And they also talked about Neely and John Gruber,
104
00:04:19,399 --> 00:04:23,120
the reaction of younger generations to AI, Gen Z especially,
105
00:04:23,360 --> 00:04:24,680
just saying they don't like it.
106
00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:29,319
And while I do think there's that reaction for the frustration of what AI can't
107
00:04:30,040 --> 00:04:33,439
I do think like even my kids, I have Gen Alpha and Gen Z,
108
00:04:33,680 --> 00:04:37,240
that there is just a accepting of AI into just daily life,
109
00:04:37,240 --> 00:04:40,399
using AI to plan a workout, which one of my sons did,
110
00:04:40,480 --> 00:04:42,800
or using AI to ask general knowledge questions,
111
00:04:42,800 --> 00:04:44,240
or even to helping with research,
112
00:04:44,319 --> 00:04:48,040
which you do have to navigate and actually show what is real and making sure
113
00:04:48,040 --> 00:04:50,920
facts are accurate. But while there's a lot of AI hype,
114
00:04:50,959 --> 00:04:52,920
both in the industry and from the brands,
115
00:04:52,959 --> 00:04:55,720
I do think there's still actually useful things you can do with it.
116
00:04:55,759 --> 00:05:00,000
If you take a few moments and actually learn how it can work in your processes.
117
00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:05,899
So you can check out my video. I'll link that below and those are all the things to download watch read listen and more
118
00:05:05,899 --> 00:05:06,899
So thanks for tuning in
119
00:05:06,899 --> 00:05:11,720
remember you can watch or listen in Apple podcast Spotify or listen wherever you get your podcast and
120
00:05:11,819 --> 00:05:17,620
Read this as a newsletter that comes every Friday link to subscribe to the newsletter down in the show notes as well
121
00:05:17,620 --> 00:05:19,860
Thanks for listening or watching. I'll catch you next time
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,480
Welcome to Top 5 Tech, my weekly show sharing something to watch, listen to, read, download,

John Oliver actually did a segment on his show last week tonight all about AI chatbots.

so not sure about this but the Vision Pro story
50
00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:22,000
I'm curious about
51
00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:24,000
On what to download, I have a shortcut for you this week
52
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:26,000
and I think it's pretty fun
53
00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:28,000
I call this my basic gradient wallpaper
54
00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:30,000
several of the pages from Basic App
55
00:02:30,840 --> 00:02:33,400
where he has lots of amazing wallpapers, even for free.
56
00:02:33,400 --> 00:02:35,400
And this shortcut is actually going to randomize
57
00:02:35,400 --> 00:02:38,400
what wallpaper you get from about five different collections.
58
00:02:38,400 --> 00:02:40,400
It has gradients of September and February.
59
00:02:40,400 --> 00:02:42,400
It has the sound wave.
60
00:02:42,400 --> 00:02:44,400
And this is going to just get a random one
61
00:02:44,400 --> 00:02:46,400
and set it as your wallpaper.
62
00:02:46,400 --> 00:02:48,400
And the best part is, it's automatically going to recognize
63
00:02:48,400 --> 00:02:50,400
what device you're running this shortcut on
64
00:02:50,400 --> 00:02:54,400
and get the wallpaper formatted properly for that device.
65
00:02:54,400 --> 00:02:56,400
And now, every time I run this shortcut,
66
00:02:56,400 --> 00:02:58,400
it's going to pull a random wallpaper,
67
00:02:58,400 --> 00:03:00,159
to the device that I'm running the shortcut on.
68
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:01,759
And it changes that quickly.
69
00:03:01,759 --> 00:03:03,000
If you're on an iPhone or iPad,
70
00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:04,360
you'll have to choose your lock screen,
71
00:03:04,360 --> 00:03:05,840
home screen combination to make sure
72
00:03:05,840 --> 00:03:07,240
it's changing the right one.
73
00:03:07,240 --> 00:03:09,039
But you can even automate this to run every morning
74
00:03:09,039 --> 00:03:10,879
and wake up to a really nice wallpaper
75
00:03:10,879 --> 00:03:12,080
from BasicAppleGuy.
76
00:03:12,080 --> 00:03:13,300
I'm also wearing BasicAppleGuy's
77
00:03:13,300 --> 00:03:14,759
little finder guide merch right now.
78
00:03:14,759 --> 00:03:16,079
All right, and finally, for something deep,
79
00:03:16,079 --> 00:03:19,900
going back to Neelat Patel's Decoder article/episode,
80
00:03:19,900 --> 00:03:22,159
John Gruber at Daring Fireball also linked to it,
81
00:03:22,159 --> 00:03:25,680
but commented on the whole AI software brain thing
82
00:03:25,680 --> 00:03:26,680
that's going on.
83
00:03:26,680 --> 00:03:29,500
And even as we talk about AI on primary technology,
84
00:03:30,020 --> 00:03:32,680
it is clear that so much of it is overhyped,
85
00:03:32,680 --> 00:03:35,419
both what the AI companies and brands are promising
86
00:03:35,419 --> 00:03:37,919
and saying what is capable using their products,
87
00:03:37,919 --> 00:03:40,400
and also just what real world people
88
00:03:40,400 --> 00:03:42,159
are being able to use these things for
89
00:03:42,159 --> 00:03:44,419
in their work and daily lives.
90
00:03:44,419 --> 00:03:45,680
So I wanted to make a video,
91
00:03:45,680 --> 00:03:47,560
and I'll link my video down below.
92
00:03:47,560 --> 00:03:49,120
I use AI every day.
93
00:03:49,120 --> 00:03:51,439
There's a bunch of tools that help speed up my process,
94
00:03:51,439 --> 00:03:52,659
whether I'm making videos.
95
00:03:52,659 --> 00:03:54,219
So there's a little me inception here,
96
00:03:54,219 --> 00:03:56,759
picture in picture of me here and down there.
97
00:03:56,759 --> 00:03:58,120
But I'll link my video on YouTube
98
00:03:58,120 --> 00:04:00,060
because I wanted to share about 15.
99
00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:04,280
using AI that's actually useful for my daily work.
100
00:04:04,639 --> 00:04:08,560
But I'll also fully admit that when you try to push AI beyond its limits,
101
00:04:08,800 --> 00:04:12,159
a lot of times it could be more trouble than it's worth or just take too much
102
00:04:12,159 --> 00:04:15,879
finicky messing around and it would just be faster if you did it yourself,
103
00:04:16,000 --> 00:04:19,399
quote unquote manually. And they also talked about Neely and John Gruber,
104
00:04:19,399 --> 00:04:23,120
the reaction of younger generations to AI, Gen Z especially,
105
00:04:23,360 --> 00:04:24,680
just saying they don't like it.
106
00:04:25,000 --> 00:04:29,319
And while I do think there's that reaction for the frustration of what AI can't
107
00:04:30,040 --> 00:04:33,439
I do think like even my kids, I have Gen Alpha and Gen Z,
108
00:04:33,680 --> 00:04:37,240
that there is just a accepting of AI into just daily life,
109
00:04:37,240 --> 00:04:40,399
using AI to plan a workout, which one of my sons did,
110
00:04:40,480 --> 00:04:42,800
or using AI to ask general knowledge questions,
111
00:04:42,800 --> 00:04:44,240
or even to helping with research,
112
00:04:44,319 --> 00:04:48,040
which you do have to navigate and actually show what is real and making sure
113
00:04:48,040 --> 00:04:50,920
facts are accurate. But while there's a lot of AI hype,
114
00:04:50,959 --> 00:04:52,920
both in the industry and from the brands,
115
00:04:52,959 --> 00:04:55,720
I do think there's still actually useful things you can do with it.
116
00:04:55,759 --> 00:05:00,000
If you take a few moments and actually learn how it can work in your processes.
117
00:05:00,000 --> 00:05:05,899
So you can check out my video. I'll link that below and those are all the things to download watch read listen and more
