Spring Training Has Begun For The Phillies! (PST Episode 554)

WEBVTT
1
00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:02.439
Hey, everybody, it's Jeff.
We wanted to let you know. We
2
00:00:02.520 --> 00:00:06.599
recorded this podcast episode on Wednesday,
February twenty first, twenty twenty four.
3
00:00:06.759 --> 00:00:09.000
By the time you hear this,
some things may have changed, but we
4
00:00:09.039 --> 00:00:37.960
hope you enjoy the show. Welcome
to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
5
00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:41.920
the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast
show in the world, over ten and
6
00:00:41.920 --> 00:00:45.359
a half years strong. I am
Jeff Warren. I'm here of my good
7
00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:49.359
buddy Eric Leonard, and we got
some great Philly sports talk come on your
8
00:00:49.439 --> 00:00:52.920
way this week. I mean,
even though we're in a law here with
9
00:00:53.000 --> 00:00:56.439
regard to the sports world, we
got some good stuff coming. How you
10
00:00:56.479 --> 00:01:00.119
doing, Eric, Nana the word
law is uh being kind. Yes,
11
00:01:02.439 --> 00:01:04.879
there ain't much happened. The NBA
is not back in session yet. The
12
00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:10.799
Phillies just got to clear Water.
Yep. The Eagles they're in that dead
13
00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:14.480
period where they can't sign it these
there's nothing happening right. If the Flyers
14
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:19.239
won three one tonight to beat the
player called yes, my favorite team.
15
00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:22.879
They're six in the conference. I
only know this because we talked two minutes
16
00:01:22.920 --> 00:01:26.079
before. We just turn on the
mics and I did a couple of weeks
17
00:01:26.120 --> 00:01:30.280
ago. I did say, Jeff, I promise I'm gonna watch a Flyers
18
00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:34.560
game this weekend, and I flipped
it on. It was Philly and versus
19
00:01:34.599 --> 00:01:40.400
Boston. I swear. Ten minutes
later they were down four nothing, and
20
00:01:40.439 --> 00:01:44.359
I'm like, this is this what
I've been missing. We're having a good
21
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:47.560
season though, like you told me, I had. I had ten minutes
22
00:01:47.560 --> 00:01:49.319
of experience with them, and it
was the worst hockey they played all year.
23
00:01:49.359 --> 00:01:52.280
So I'm just not gonna watch again. All right. Yeah, I
24
00:01:52.319 --> 00:01:55.159
mean that's the extent of the Flyers
talk we're going to get into this week
25
00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:00.840
folks. Right there. That's it. Aarma Mater beat Illinois tonight, yeah,
26
00:02:00.599 --> 00:02:07.959
twelve, yeah, yeah, going
man sports sports. My son is
27
00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:15.919
upstairs watching Brazil versus Puerto Rico Gold
Cup Women's Gold Cup qualifier soccer. There
28
00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:21.960
you go. That's where we're at, folks. Just to give you a
29
00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:24.439
little preview of what we're gonna be
getting into, folks. We're going to
30
00:02:24.759 --> 00:02:29.639
certainly get into some Sixers talk and
really, you know, try to answer
31
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:32.439
the question. We're gonna be asking
the question, should the Sixers give Buddy
32
00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:37.800
Healed an extension in the future?
Yes, After four games should they do
33
00:02:37.960 --> 00:02:43.960
it? And then from there we're
gonna get into a dominant women's basketball player.
34
00:02:44.120 --> 00:02:46.599
She is a phenom. Everybody should
know her name, Caitlin Clark.
35
00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:51.400
If you don't know her name,
stay tuned for that particular story and segment
36
00:02:51.479 --> 00:02:53.879
that we're going to be getting into. From there, we're going to talk
37
00:02:53.919 --> 00:02:57.919
about the Philadelphia Eagles and whether or
not they should get a veteran defensive tackle
38
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:00.919
during this offseason. A lot of
quote marks with regard to that defensive line
39
00:03:00.919 --> 00:03:07.039
and specifically the defensive tackle position.
And as Eric said, spring training has
40
00:03:07.080 --> 00:03:13.520
started, pitchers and catchers and then
some have reported down to Clearwater and just
41
00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:15.840
some overall thoughts about this upcoming season. Here. Now, what we're thrown
42
00:03:15.879 --> 00:03:20.479
down on the table this week,
our good friend Jeff Kerr from CBS Sports.
43
00:03:20.680 --> 00:03:23.599
He's going to be joining us to
talk about this Phillies upcoming season and
44
00:03:23.639 --> 00:03:27.240
some of the storylines that we're going
to be following during spring training and throughout
45
00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:31.000
twenty twenty four. So Eric,
man, let's get into some sixers talk
46
00:03:31.080 --> 00:03:37.400
here because All Star Break is getting
ready to conclude here. We're recording this
47
00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:40.719
Wednesday this week. Believe the sixer
is gonna be playing Thursday night. They're
48
00:03:40.719 --> 00:03:46.080
gonna be playing the Knicks. I
believe getting this next Basically half of the
49
00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:52.280
season started here without again Joel Embiid
and what this team is going to need
50
00:03:52.319 --> 00:03:53.400
to do and what Nick Nurse is
going to need to do with the talent
51
00:03:53.719 --> 00:03:59.879
he has there in Philly, of
course, without the best player in basketball.
52
00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:04.280
But it's a small sample size,
as I mentioned earlier, four games,
53
00:04:04.520 --> 00:04:10.240
but Buddy healed, man, I
mean, an incredible four games thus
54
00:04:10.400 --> 00:04:13.439
far. And look, some of
these numbers probably aren't gonna hold up,
55
00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:16.279
but he's playing thirty nine minutes a
night thus far in Philly, twenty two
56
00:04:16.360 --> 00:04:20.240
point three points per game, seven
and a half assists, one point eight
57
00:04:20.279 --> 00:04:25.519
steals per game, and that's to
go along with him shooting just over fifty
58
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:31.839
two percent from the field forty five
percent from three point range. And it's
59
00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:35.839
great to have him there, really, I mean, his three point volume
60
00:04:35.879 --> 00:04:42.040
and skill, plus his play off
the dribble and as a passer just has
61
00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:44.920
been I think showing us over these
four games, Eric, how much he
62
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:48.360
can really elevate this Sixers offense.
And you know, I'm thinking to myself,
63
00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:53.160
man, they got to give this
guy an extension over like they they
64
00:04:53.279 --> 00:05:00.759
need him because what he has been
giving this team in the various skill sets
65
00:05:00.839 --> 00:05:04.199
that he has it thus far has
been such a great move by Daryl Morey.
66
00:05:04.279 --> 00:05:09.000
In fact, you know, it's
taken pressure off of Tyrese Maxi right
67
00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:14.879
now and his off ball play,
his movement and just complimentary scoring that he's
68
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:17.879
gonna end up providing alongside Joel Embiid. I think it's gonna be perfect for
69
00:05:17.959 --> 00:05:23.240
what this offense is gonna need when
Joel Embiid comes back. So Buddy Healed
70
00:05:23.480 --> 00:05:28.720
this particular situation and Era, I
actually think it's pretty good, and I'm
71
00:05:28.720 --> 00:05:31.399
actually optimistic about where the Sixers are
gonna be going for the remainder of this
72
00:05:31.480 --> 00:05:34.720
season. I was talking about it
with our friend Matt Rodgers on the Table
73
00:05:34.759 --> 00:05:39.800
Talk show this past week. Eric. But like Buddy Healed is an important
74
00:05:39.839 --> 00:05:45.839
cog now in this team and an
important piece. So I I honestly I
75
00:05:45.879 --> 00:05:51.360
think they may want to extend him
if he's gonna continue this production. Yeah,
76
00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:55.240
you got to give it to you
got to give to the GM.
77
00:05:55.399 --> 00:05:59.519
I mean, Mory gave up a
bag of peanuts for the guy. Yeah,
78
00:05:59.560 --> 00:06:03.800
I know he's in a in a
contract year expiring year. But to
79
00:06:04.199 --> 00:06:09.439
get him for pretty much nothing just
it was it was it was a win
80
00:06:09.519 --> 00:06:12.480
win, you know, for the
for the Sixers, there was no downside
81
00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:15.759
of that trade. And man,
he the last three games before the All
82
00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:19.720
Star Break, they they lost that
they lost that Heat game they could have
83
00:06:19.800 --> 00:06:24.519
won. But you know, they
beat the Wizards, they beat the Cavs
84
00:06:24.519 --> 00:06:28.879
in Cleveland and just played really well. And Healed and Maxie play compliment each
85
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:31.639
other pretty well. Defensively. It's
kind of a mess, which you knew
86
00:06:31.720 --> 00:06:35.399
was gonna happen, But the Sixers
knew that when they brought Healed in without
87
00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:40.319
and be there. It's just we're
gonna have to outscore teams, and they'll
88
00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:44.319
struggle against teams like the Heat,
who are really good defensively. But I
89
00:06:45.199 --> 00:06:48.240
like the way those two play it. And you can you can tell Healed
90
00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:53.519
was kind of there were too many
guys in Indiana, right, and Buddy,
91
00:06:53.639 --> 00:06:56.839
Buddy kind of got bent or kind
of just lost playing time. And
92
00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:00.959
you know, and when you're on
a decent team and you're not playing anymore
93
00:07:00.959 --> 00:07:02.399
and your your job kind of went
away, like you probably you know,
94
00:07:02.680 --> 00:07:05.879
he he was shooting thirty eight percent
from three. You know, it wasn't
95
00:07:05.879 --> 00:07:12.240
having the best season. He comes
to the Sixers, has four really really
96
00:07:12.279 --> 00:07:15.160
good games. He's shooting forty five
percent for three. Obviously he's reinvigorated.
97
00:07:15.800 --> 00:07:19.079
I mean I would be in I
would be a little careful in terms of
98
00:07:19.079 --> 00:07:25.319
resigning him. You know, he's
thirty one years old. But if but
99
00:07:25.399 --> 00:07:27.959
thirty one now in the NBA is
like not, you know, that's not
100
00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:33.600
terrible anymore. No, and my
god, like this this team has always
101
00:07:33.639 --> 00:07:41.079
needed shooting, you know, even
post even sorry what's the guy's name,
102
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:46.240
the white guy, the announcer now
the kid from Duke JJ Redick, Sorry,
103
00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:49.040
just he You know, they've been
looking for shooters. You know,
104
00:07:49.079 --> 00:07:51.759
they had they had Curry's brother for
that one season. I thought, this
105
00:07:51.800 --> 00:07:56.480
is awesome, but they traded him. But they've always kind of needed some
106
00:07:56.519 --> 00:08:00.519
shooting. And Max's a good shooter. And it's like I for was a
107
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:03.959
decent shooter, not like Buddy.
Heel like he has not just shooting.
108
00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:07.879
He can go to the rim.
He's he is the ideal player. If
109
00:08:07.879 --> 00:08:11.639
you want to keep if you want
to keep him beat around, you know,
110
00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:15.199
you just got to give him some
good guards with shooting in that.
111
00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:18.800
I think he fits the bill and
you could afford to sign him, you
112
00:08:18.839 --> 00:08:24.399
know. The I think like they
have the most ridiculous like set of contracts
113
00:08:24.399 --> 00:08:28.800
next year, Like literally it's just
Maxine Embiid yea or a contract. They
114
00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:33.720
could waive everyone else. There's no
player options. It's just those two.
115
00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:37.159
They could sign heel but my only
thing would be like, don't don't make
116
00:08:37.159 --> 00:08:41.399
it some ridiculous exactly. Well,
yeah, yeah, I mean I could
117
00:08:41.399 --> 00:08:46.200
see I could see a four year
deal. I mean do you think that.
118
00:08:46.759 --> 00:08:50.039
I God, I would jump at
that exactly. Yeah, four years
119
00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:54.840
if you could get it to one
hundred, one hundred and twenty somewhere in
120
00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:58.879
there, Like that's not insane.
The cap is going up. Ye,
121
00:08:58.360 --> 00:09:03.600
you're got to pay eventually, but
this is a team with embiid you're gonna
122
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:07.679
have to go into the luxury tax
eventually. They're not going to be at
123
00:09:07.679 --> 00:09:11.519
the h what's the term top,
the top the top of the rope or
124
00:09:11.559 --> 00:09:15.519
the top bill Like they're like the
teams like the Lakers and the uh,
125
00:09:16.360 --> 00:09:18.440
the uh, the the Golden State
Warriors. You know, they're Yeah,
126
00:09:18.519 --> 00:09:22.799
they've been in the luxury tax for
ages. Now the Sixers aren't even near
127
00:09:22.840 --> 00:09:28.159
that. So I to bring him
back because he can shoot and that's kind
128
00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:30.480
of what you need around him.
Be like, I would absolutely bring him
129
00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:33.320
back again. It just can't be
like some two hundred million dollar absurd deal
130
00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:37.279
exactly exactly. Look like I said, I'm optimistic about where the team is
131
00:09:37.320 --> 00:09:41.320
going to go. I do think
Embid's going to come back before the end
132
00:09:41.320 --> 00:09:43.000
of the regular season. I do
think he will. I know, the
133
00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:46.360
last time you were on with me, Eric, we talked about the fact
134
00:09:46.399 --> 00:09:50.240
that you know it's gonna take him
some time to get back into some basketball
135
00:09:50.279 --> 00:09:54.120
shape. Of course, that first
game he comes back, it's it's not
136
00:09:54.159 --> 00:09:58.799
gonna be joe El Embiid scoring forty
points. That's not gonna happen. I
137
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.799
know that. I think six Ers
Nation needs to know that as well.
138
00:10:01.159 --> 00:10:05.559
But the fact of the matter is
he will be coming back, and there
139
00:10:05.639 --> 00:10:07.759
is gonna be even though it's gonna
take him time to get back into basketball
140
00:10:07.799 --> 00:10:13.399
shape, there's gonna be a freshness
to him, I think, and with
141
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:18.600
that is going to come I think
some positive success down the stretch. I
142
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:22.679
really do. I am not under
the impression that this Sixer season is over
143
00:10:22.919 --> 00:10:26.799
at all. There are some factions
out there that say, oh, it's
144
00:10:26.840 --> 00:10:28.759
done. You know, Joel,
he's not gonna he's not gonna be MVP.
145
00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:33.600
Blah blah blah. Who cares about
that? However, you know he
146
00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:37.240
is going to come back. I
think so because we've seen his resiliency over
147
00:10:37.279 --> 00:10:41.159
the years, and because of that
resiliency, because the type of player is,
148
00:10:41.159 --> 00:10:43.600
and like I said, the best
player in the world. He's going
149
00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:48.279
to be back on this court at
the Wells Fargo Center, and I think
150
00:10:48.279 --> 00:10:52.360
we're gonna see some positive stuff from
this team, for sure. I'm not
151
00:10:52.240 --> 00:10:54.480
I am Sutrelian, and I want
to write this team off. I know
152
00:10:54.519 --> 00:10:58.600
the last time I was on the
shows two weeks ago, and it just
153
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:01.159
seemed grim. It did just happened. We didn't have we didn't have Buddy
154
00:11:01.200 --> 00:11:03.000
healed yet, and we're like,
what the hell are we gonna do?
155
00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:09.200
Right, But they're excuse me.
They're currently sitting fifth in the conference,
156
00:11:11.639 --> 00:11:16.720
but it's kind of it's kind of
like logjam between three and six. Yeah,
157
00:11:16.159 --> 00:11:20.360
so the Sixers are right there.
They play the Knicks tomorrow night,
158
00:11:20.440 --> 00:11:26.399
and we're talking about in the injury
is horrific for this team because he's the
159
00:11:26.440 --> 00:11:28.799
best player by far in this team. But every team is gonna have injuries.
160
00:11:28.840 --> 00:11:33.080
The Knicks are like og and Andobi
had surgery. Julius Randall's already out.
161
00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:37.720
Like it's not like every team is
healthy and just blowing past us,
162
00:11:37.919 --> 00:11:39.759
you know. And I don't believe
in the Knicks or the Cavaliers, to
163
00:11:39.799 --> 00:11:45.480
be honest with you, I really
don't. I believe in the Knicks.
164
00:11:45.799 --> 00:11:52.120
I think if everyone's healthy, that's
a scary ass team. Cleveland, I'm
165
00:11:52.559 --> 00:11:56.000
I'm not so sure about. I
thought they would have made another deal or
166
00:11:56.039 --> 00:11:58.480
two at the trade Dewnley. They
didn't really do anything. They did nothing.
167
00:11:58.759 --> 00:12:00.600
I know they're playing really well,
but I I don't know. They
168
00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:03.600
don't have enough to make make it
to the conference finals. I would have
169
00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:07.279
made some kind of trade. But
every tea's gonna have everything's gonna have injuries.
170
00:12:07.320 --> 00:12:11.360
The Bucks are old, you know, Doc is a new coach.
171
00:12:11.399 --> 00:12:15.480
I they they lost, God,
they lost their last game before they all
172
00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:18.120
start breaking. I was like,
I forge who they play, but it
173
00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:20.159
was just one of those horrific Doc
rivers. They just fell apart at the
174
00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:22.279
end of the game, and I
was like, whoa, this is this
175
00:12:22.360 --> 00:12:26.679
the favorite to win the East?
Like they played what didn't they play?
176
00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:30.840
Didn't they? Or no, they
played Memphis, Miami and Denver. Yes,
177
00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:33.240
it was the Memphis game they lost. Yes, they were the way
178
00:12:33.320 --> 00:12:37.919
up and to collapse like that against
a abysmal Memphis team. Yes, he
179
00:12:39.159 --> 00:12:43.799
kicked the ship out of them before
that. So like, I'm not scared
180
00:12:43.799 --> 00:12:46.840
of them either. And they're they're
they're old, Like that's an old team,
181
00:12:46.879 --> 00:12:50.399
you know. And with Doc Rivers
coaching them too, I mean,
182
00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:54.799
my gosh, I mean they are
struggling worse than when they actually got them.
183
00:12:54.639 --> 00:12:58.240
We have the best coach of the
top six teams. Yes, you
184
00:12:58.279 --> 00:13:03.200
know that's that. That is I
don't think you can even deny that.
185
00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:07.159
But the one thing about him be
coming back though when he does, is
186
00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:13.519
he's he's gonna look soft, he's
gonna look slow. You know, probably
187
00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:16.799
gets tired pretty easily. But the
difference between him a couple of years ago
188
00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:22.360
where you were like, uh,
oh it's fat embiid uh not fat,
189
00:13:22.440 --> 00:13:26.000
just not in shape, you know, that was the that was the thing
190
00:13:26.039 --> 00:13:28.720
with him. He was always winded
by the fourth quarter and his arms weren't
191
00:13:28.960 --> 00:13:33.279
cut offensively, he's a he's a
complete he's he's he's a he's a finished
192
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:37.440
product where he was. This is
the first time he's had a major injury.
193
00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:41.919
But he's also a finished product offensively. Yep. So even when he
194
00:13:41.919 --> 00:13:45.320
comes back, he'll be able to
hit threes, the twenty footers, the
195
00:13:45.360 --> 00:13:50.000
free throws, like he's gonna he's
gonna be able to still score three points
196
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:52.519
a game, but not be in
the best shape. Ye Like, he's
197
00:13:52.519 --> 00:13:58.159
gonna be a little more like Jokic
probably than he ever was, because he's
198
00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:00.720
such a you know, he's he's
so good around the basket. I think
199
00:14:00.720 --> 00:14:03.759
he's guys, you're gonna shoot more
from the outside. But I'm okay with
200
00:14:03.799 --> 00:14:07.480
that, because again, his game
is finally come full, like he's this
201
00:14:07.519 --> 00:14:11.120
is the best he's ever going to
be offensively. Many people said he forget
202
00:14:11.120 --> 00:14:18.120
interview, he was the best big
man offensive display ever, and I tend
203
00:14:18.200 --> 00:14:20.200
to agree when it's explained of how
he was scoring as a big man.
204
00:14:20.360 --> 00:14:22.919
Yep. Absolutely, We're going to
keep on top of it here at the
205
00:14:22.919 --> 00:14:28.159
PST podcast show, and we wanted
to stick with the basketball theme too,
206
00:14:28.279 --> 00:14:33.879
because you know, if you did
not know this lady who is playing women's
207
00:14:33.919 --> 00:14:39.440
basketball at Iowa for the buck Eyes, Caitlin Clark. You need to know
208
00:14:39.519 --> 00:14:43.879
about her. She is awesome.
I mean more people need to know who
209
00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:48.799
she is and what she has done, not just for women's college basketball and
210
00:14:48.919 --> 00:14:54.799
for basketball in general, but just
women's sports. My gosh, it just
211
00:14:54.200 --> 00:15:01.799
yet again another woman that we are
seeing breaking sports barrier. So just this
212
00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:09.120
past week she became she became the
all time leading scorer in NC DOUBLEA women's
213
00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:15.039
basketball again, all time, you
know, in her in vintage fashion,
214
00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:20.960
she had a three pointer from the
edge of the Hawkeye's logo at center court
215
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:24.240
to clinch that record, and it
was something of beauty, it was poetry.
216
00:15:24.279 --> 00:15:30.960
But my gosh, I mean,
she has done incredible, incredible things
217
00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:35.679
on a basketball court, and I
just I just don't think that she has
218
00:15:35.720 --> 00:15:39.840
gotten her due, because she's getting
she's getting ready to break the men's scoring
219
00:15:39.879 --> 00:15:46.159
record that was set by Pete Marvich. He holds the men's Division one scoring
220
00:15:46.200 --> 00:15:50.120
record in the NC Double A with
three six hundred and sixty seven points.
221
00:15:50.200 --> 00:15:54.879
She's just ninety nine points away with
four games remaining, three thousand, five
222
00:15:54.960 --> 00:16:00.440
hundred and sixty nine career points she
has right now, and apparently right now,
223
00:16:00.720 --> 00:16:06.559
the NCAA Women's Tournament, they're almost
sold out at this point. From
224
00:16:06.639 --> 00:16:12.759
what I understand, fewer than two
thousand tickets across seven sessions remain within with
225
00:16:14.240 --> 00:16:18.279
regard to that tournament, and a
lot of that is because of Caitlin Clark
226
00:16:18.600 --> 00:16:22.600
and what she has meant to women's
basketball at the basketball world in general.
227
00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:26.639
Oh and by the way, too, she also is the top selling college
228
00:16:26.759 --> 00:16:33.080
athlete in the nil era. We're
talking about the money that she is making
229
00:16:33.360 --> 00:16:40.480
on name, image and likeness,
and it's really great to see. I
230
00:16:40.480 --> 00:16:44.399
mean, as somebody who has two
daughters, Eric, your daughter, you
231
00:16:44.399 --> 00:16:48.120
know, all of our kids have
been in some sort of athletics within the
232
00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:51.960
course of their career or the course
of their very young childhood. I say
233
00:16:51.960 --> 00:16:56.399
careers because it seems like our kids
have careers at this point with regard to
234
00:16:56.399 --> 00:17:02.360
certain sports. But it's just it's
really good to see another woman breaking down
235
00:17:02.399 --> 00:17:06.640
some barriers here and I just I
love it, and I wanted to bring
236
00:17:06.680 --> 00:17:08.400
this up on the show because she
deserves her due. And I'm not sure
237
00:17:08.400 --> 00:17:14.839
if everybody knows who Caitlyn Clark actually
is, well, if you don't you're
238
00:17:14.839 --> 00:17:18.960
an asshole. I mean sorry,
I can't even Like I'm a basketball guy.
239
00:17:19.119 --> 00:17:23.640
Yeah, that is my favorite sport. And she's fucking phenomenal. Like
240
00:17:25.519 --> 00:17:30.599
i've she like just to get just
to give it a perspective, Like I
241
00:17:30.680 --> 00:17:37.119
coached my son's travel basketball team,
ten eleven year old boys, and her
242
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:41.240
name would come up when they were
like shooting around. And I can tell
243
00:17:41.240 --> 00:17:42.640
you right now, when I was
ten or eleven playing basketball, I would
244
00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:47.319
have never said a woman's basketball or
a woman's name from basketball. Ever,
245
00:17:47.720 --> 00:17:51.480
I couldn't even tell you, like
a name like what. I was never
246
00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:55.480
exposed to it. That's what I
mean. I had no idea you could
247
00:17:55.480 --> 00:17:56.599
say a name. I'd be like, okay, is that age? Is
248
00:17:56.640 --> 00:18:03.279
that a person? I have no
idea where And I was thinking about it,
249
00:18:03.319 --> 00:18:08.480
like you know, the like this
generation is a little more not team
250
00:18:08.599 --> 00:18:11.880
oriented. They're more like player oriented. Right, they're fans of players,
251
00:18:11.960 --> 00:18:17.599
especially in basketball. I mean for
sure, and we've we've finally reached you
252
00:18:17.640 --> 00:18:21.279
and I are old enough now we
have finally Like when Kobe came out,
253
00:18:21.480 --> 00:18:26.039
he was the next Jordan, right, he was the next Curry? Is
254
00:18:26.079 --> 00:18:30.440
the superstar? Like like Lebron was
the guy, and then Curry took over
255
00:18:30.599 --> 00:18:33.839
in terms of like who the fans, you know who what fans cared about?
256
00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:37.960
And this is the first generation of
players that are the is the Curry
257
00:18:38.039 --> 00:18:45.720
generation. They were influenced and watched
grew up watching watching Curry, and like
258
00:18:45.720 --> 00:18:48.680
like tre Trey Trey Young from the
Hawks, like he was supposed to be
259
00:18:48.680 --> 00:18:52.400
like the next Curry, and who
the hell knew it was actually going to
260
00:18:52.480 --> 00:18:56.640
be a woman that plays Iowa basketball
like she is the next Curry. If
261
00:18:56.680 --> 00:19:02.880
you watch her shoots, she shoots
just like him. And and it's not
262
00:19:02.960 --> 00:19:08.000
just she has the Curry thing,
because she has the bravado. She has
263
00:19:08.039 --> 00:19:14.279
that, she has that factor,
yep. And and like for her to
264
00:19:14.279 --> 00:19:18.359
break the record from a thirty two
footer from the Iowa logo, that is
265
00:19:18.440 --> 00:19:22.680
just a fuck you till everyone like
yes, put her hands up, just
266
00:19:22.720 --> 00:19:25.920
like yeah, I'm the best,
Like this is not even close, no
267
00:19:25.960 --> 00:19:27.319
one can, no one's better than
me. She's like p maarovitch, why
268
00:19:27.359 --> 00:19:32.519
don't you go fuck yourself. I'm
coming for you, buddy. That record's
269
00:19:32.559 --> 00:19:36.000
done. She has not ey points
to go one hundred points right, yeah,
270
00:19:36.039 --> 00:19:38.119
four games, Yeah, I think
she'll get it. I'm not I'm
271
00:19:38.160 --> 00:19:42.680
not concerned, but I love how
she I mean, she plays perfectly sound
272
00:19:42.680 --> 00:19:47.720
basketball. She has great handle,
great form, and she's got that that
273
00:19:47.839 --> 00:19:51.440
chip on her shoulder fuck you attitude, which is just Curry had it.
274
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:53.599
He seems like a super nice guy. Do you actually watch basketball? He's
275
00:19:53.640 --> 00:20:00.160
a killer and uh, she's she
is like, she is the next Curry.
276
00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:02.559
And if you would have told me
in twenty fifteen, twenty sixty,
277
00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:06.079
when Curry kind of took kind of
like took off, that it was going
278
00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:11.599
to be a woman basketball player,
no idea, I would have been like,
279
00:20:11.599 --> 00:20:15.200
no, I believe that. Yeah, but it's absolutely true. She
280
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:18.599
is the next Curry, and it's
proven with the nil thing. I think
281
00:20:18.599 --> 00:20:22.000
it's gonna follow her into the WNBA
or whatever she winds up doing. But
282
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:26.680
I do have to ask, how
does she does she get how does she
283
00:20:26.720 --> 00:20:30.480
get paid for that? Like,
how does she actually get money for that?
284
00:20:30.319 --> 00:20:34.640
For the nil? Yeah, for
the nil stuff. I honestly have
285
00:20:34.880 --> 00:20:40.839
not done a deep dive into it. I haven't, but I mean apparently
286
00:20:41.119 --> 00:20:48.799
there according to fanatics, the Clark
branded merchandise is going crazy. I don't
287
00:20:48.799 --> 00:20:55.519
know if she necessarily gets any money
from that. I think she does actually
288
00:20:55.839 --> 00:21:00.400
through some of the Fanatics merchandise.
But as I'm reading here from an article
289
00:21:03.519 --> 00:21:07.480
right here with regard to NIL,
it says, according to Fanatics, more
290
00:21:07.559 --> 00:21:11.359
Clark branded merchandise was sold in less
than twenty four hours after she broke the
291
00:21:11.400 --> 00:21:17.200
record Thursday night than any other individual
men's or women's NIL college athlete across all
292
00:21:17.319 --> 00:21:22.839
sports has sold since twenty twenty two, when NIL merchandise began. So Fanatics
293
00:21:22.920 --> 00:21:27.920
is obviously doing some NIL merchandising.
Where they're able to get they're able to
294
00:21:27.960 --> 00:21:36.039
make some money, and rightfully so, so anyway, that's basically probably where
295
00:21:36.079 --> 00:21:40.240
she's getting it. She's probably doing
autographs as well, autograph sessions here and
296
00:21:40.279 --> 00:21:45.680
there. There's various ways that a
lot of these college athletes are making money
297
00:21:45.720 --> 00:21:48.119
off of NIL, and I'm actually
glad to see it. I really am.
298
00:21:48.680 --> 00:21:52.799
It's changed in the direction of college
sports, for sure, but focusing
299
00:21:53.359 --> 00:22:00.359
in the or focusing momentum toward college
athletes. Yeah, and man, she
300
00:22:00.880 --> 00:22:06.319
first of all, I would absolutely
get a T shirt jersey of hers Iowa
301
00:22:06.400 --> 00:22:08.880
twenty two. It's actually kind of
a sharp looking I'm looking at it right
302
00:22:08.880 --> 00:22:15.160
now. But and it's long been
said, like if you're really into basketball
303
00:22:15.240 --> 00:22:21.440
again. I've had real like basketball
heads, coaches and just people I know
304
00:22:21.480 --> 00:22:23.599
that really love basketball. They'll always
tell you, like, if you want
305
00:22:23.599 --> 00:22:29.880
to teach kids how to play basketball, have them watch women's college basketball.
306
00:22:30.400 --> 00:22:33.400
I'm watching that tournament more than the
men's tournament, dude. I think this
307
00:22:33.480 --> 00:22:37.400
is actually the first year I've heard
people on radio, people on podcasts,
308
00:22:37.559 --> 00:22:44.039
and like people in my life say
I'm more interested in the women's tournament than
309
00:22:44.039 --> 00:22:47.519
the men's tournament this year. Yeah. It's close. Yeah, and she's
310
00:22:47.559 --> 00:22:48.960
the biggest part of it, obviously. You know, she's the star.
311
00:22:51.119 --> 00:22:53.160
She like I said, she's the
Curry. Yep. I mean anyone that
312
00:22:53.319 --> 00:22:57.440
just any person that can just take
one step over the half court line and
313
00:22:57.480 --> 00:23:02.039
they're in range. Watch it.
Man, that's that's amazing. Great.
314
00:23:02.559 --> 00:23:07.039
Yeah, but it's but it's kind
of unheard of. Like I remember when
315
00:23:07.079 --> 00:23:11.519
the WA when the w NBA kicked
off, and god was it ninety four
316
00:23:11.640 --> 00:23:14.480
ninety five somewhere in there. Yeah, man, I wrote it off.
317
00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:17.519
You know, that's just so I
was at that time. And I think
318
00:23:17.640 --> 00:23:21.119
most of the men in America,
like the NBA kind of wrote it off,
319
00:23:21.799 --> 00:23:25.319
but if eventually, you know,
if you if you watch the if
320
00:23:25.319 --> 00:23:27.039
you watch the game the way it's
played, and you want to teach fundamentals
321
00:23:27.039 --> 00:23:33.359
to people, like they're way better
than like the AEU product coming through up
322
00:23:33.480 --> 00:23:38.480
high school for men's basketball or boys
basketball into men. But yeah, I
323
00:23:38.839 --> 00:23:42.960
just it's such a cool story because
I love basketball, and I I do
324
00:23:44.079 --> 00:23:47.839
coach, and I coach au By. You know, it is a lot
325
00:23:47.880 --> 00:23:51.799
of control times, but it's like
I wish, I wish she could be
326
00:23:51.839 --> 00:23:55.519
a little more like what she does, because it's if you haven't watched her
327
00:23:55.559 --> 00:23:57.839
play, guys, just everybody just
go watch. She's great. It's going
328
00:23:57.920 --> 00:24:00.720
to be fun to watch her or
teammates. It's going to be fun to
329
00:24:00.759 --> 00:24:06.920
watch the women's NCAA tournament for sure. So as we're moving along here,
330
00:24:06.920 --> 00:24:08.880
folks, we are going to take

340
00:24:40.799 --> 00:24:42.200
Just want to say sorry about that, folks. It's just been it
341
00:24:42.240 --> 00:24:47.240
really has been a busy time for
the guys and myself and just you know
342
00:24:47.359 --> 00:24:51.319

four. Lots of stuff that we're doing

348
00:25:23.440 --> 00:25:26.759
I say it all the time.
You all know where had So let's take
349
00:25:26.759 --> 00:25:30.000
that break. We'll be back in
just a bit. All right, we
350
00:25:30.079 --> 00:25:34.240
are back, and uh, Eric, let's get into some eagles talk here.
351
00:25:34.279 --> 00:25:37.160
Of course, we got to talk
eagles, you know, because it's
352
00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:40.480
like the off season, nothing's happening, but everybody loves Eagles talk, and
353
00:25:40.519 --> 00:25:42.920
no, folks, we're not I'm
sorry, We're not gonna get into the
354
00:25:42.960 --> 00:25:48.000
whole Jalen Hurts had too much stuff
going the storyline that he had too much
355
00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:52.319
stuff going on and off the field, there was too much pressure on him.
356
00:25:52.319 --> 00:25:57.039
The Derek Gun crap about Nick Sirianni
and Big Dom the security guy.
357
00:25:57.440 --> 00:26:00.480
I'm sorry, I'm not gonna be
We're not gonna get in to nonsense.
358
00:26:00.920 --> 00:26:07.119
But what we're gonna get into is
something of reality with this team, which
359
00:26:07.279 --> 00:26:11.680
is, should the Eagles actually get
a veteran defensive tackle during the offseason when
360
00:26:11.680 --> 00:26:17.519
they only have Jalen Carter, Jordan
Davis, Milton Williams, Marlon Tooey Polotu
361
00:26:17.759 --> 00:26:22.000
and maybe they signed Fletcher Cox,
maybe they bring him back on a one
362
00:26:22.079 --> 00:26:26.079
year deal. We're gonna talk about
this here. Should they or should they
363
00:26:26.160 --> 00:26:30.079
get another defensive tackle, because certainly
they could draft somebody. They could certainly
364
00:26:30.200 --> 00:26:36.000
draft a guy in the in the
first round. I don't think Byron Murphy
365
00:26:36.079 --> 00:26:40.000
is gonna be there, Chris Jenkins
might not be there, but Michael Hall,
366
00:26:40.200 --> 00:26:45.079
Johnny Newton from Illinois, Darius Robinson
from Missouri, Uh, Devondre Sweat
367
00:26:45.079 --> 00:26:48.759
from Texas as well. Maybe maybe
they draft somebody, But I don't know.
368
00:26:49.200 --> 00:26:53.319
This defensive tackle unit is so young, Eric, I think they need
369
00:26:53.359 --> 00:26:57.759
to have a veteran presence there,
especially on that especially on the line in
370
00:26:57.880 --> 00:27:02.079
general. As we know Brandon Graham's
probably not going to be coming back.
371
00:27:02.720 --> 00:27:06.400
I don't know one of your most
senior guys aside from Hassan Reddick if he
372
00:27:06.480 --> 00:27:08.519
is coming back, which I think
he will be, but it would be
373
00:27:08.599 --> 00:27:12.240
Josh Sweat. He'd be one of
the oldest guys there on the line,
374
00:27:12.279 --> 00:27:15.880
And it's like, man, I
don't know if I want Josh Sweat necessarily
375
00:27:15.480 --> 00:27:21.640
being that veteran leader at this point
in his career. So yeah, you
376
00:27:21.680 --> 00:27:23.480
don't. Yeah, I'm just saying, if they don't bring Fletcher Cox back
377
00:27:23.519 --> 00:27:26.960
on a one year deal, they
got to get a veteran defensive tackle.
378
00:27:26.079 --> 00:27:30.720
They have to. Yeah, I
think bringing Fletcher back would kind of be
379
00:27:30.759 --> 00:27:34.839
an easy unless he gets like a
two year deal with more guaranteed money somewhere
380
00:27:34.839 --> 00:27:38.839
else. Yeah, I'm hoping they
can bring him back. How he's pretty
381
00:27:38.839 --> 00:27:45.119
good at like moving the money around
to bring guys back like that. Yeah,
382
00:27:45.240 --> 00:27:48.920
I think the good thing you talked
about drafting someone in the first round,
383
00:27:48.960 --> 00:27:52.319
like they've already spent how much draft
capital in that position, Like you
384
00:27:52.440 --> 00:27:55.599
just listed off the ends, and
it's like, I think, if that's
385
00:27:55.599 --> 00:27:57.279
where you want a draft, honestly, like that's where you should probably put
386
00:27:57.720 --> 00:28:02.400
put some draft capital this year.
The good thing is I was on spot
387
00:28:02.480 --> 00:28:06.039
track today. I'm looking at it
right now, like it's actually a pretty
388
00:28:06.160 --> 00:28:10.920
good defensive tackle unrestricted free agent market
this year. Not bad, yeah,
389
00:28:11.039 --> 00:28:15.359
I mean these guys are like more
expensive, but Chris Jones, DJ Reider,
390
00:28:15.640 --> 00:28:18.240
Sheldon Rankins, like there's some real
names on here, and even like
391
00:28:18.319 --> 00:28:22.440
as you go down the lister,
it's like there's guys they could bring in
392
00:28:22.920 --> 00:28:26.359
to fill spots, you know,
Christian Wilkins, is there, Quentin Jefferson,
393
00:28:26.359 --> 00:28:29.759
Like, there's there's a lot of
players they could bring in on kind
394
00:28:29.759 --> 00:28:34.240
of cost effective deal. So they
picked a good year to be to need
395
00:28:34.279 --> 00:28:37.960
to kind of fill that position.
Yeah, yeah, I think so too.
396
00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:41.440
And just keep in mind, folks
too, that the Eagles have three
397
00:28:42.200 --> 00:28:47.079
picks in the top fifty three this
year. They have one first round,
398
00:28:47.279 --> 00:28:52.880
they have two second round picks again, three picks in the top fifty three.
399
00:28:52.279 --> 00:28:56.480
It's I'm happy about that. And
who do I really think we're gonna
400
00:28:56.480 --> 00:29:00.680
see again, It's gonna be building
through the trench. Is because you know,
401
00:29:00.680 --> 00:29:04.319
if Jason Kelsey does retire, which
I think officially he will, I
402
00:29:04.400 --> 00:29:07.880
do, that's my gut instinct is
that he's going to retire, is that
403
00:29:07.960 --> 00:29:12.359
Cam Jurgens is going to be moving
over to the center position, and there's
404
00:29:12.359 --> 00:29:17.319
gonna there's gonna need to be some
depth with regard to the offensive line too.
405
00:29:17.440 --> 00:29:21.920
So I think defensive line and offensive
line are going to be focused on
406
00:29:22.039 --> 00:29:26.720
heavily in this draft. And they
currently have nine picks, so I think
407
00:29:26.720 --> 00:29:30.720
it's going to be heavily invested in, especially from a defensive side things.
408
00:29:30.839 --> 00:29:33.359
Yeah, And I think I think
those first three picks are going to if
409
00:29:33.400 --> 00:29:36.720
they keep them all, are going
to be all offensive line defensive end.
410
00:29:36.960 --> 00:29:40.000
I mean, that's how they've built
this team throughout the years. They have
411
00:29:40.039 --> 00:29:41.799
plenty of weapons. I think offensively, they don't even have to like reach
412
00:29:41.839 --> 00:29:47.720
for anybody. If they want to
go back or they want to go cornerback,
413
00:29:47.759 --> 00:29:49.880
safety, then never go safety,
but cornerback maybe, Yeah, I
414
00:29:49.920 --> 00:29:53.079
think that's where you have to focus
because the offensive line is going to be
415
00:29:53.559 --> 00:29:56.960
I mean, Lane Johnson is what
fifty? I mean, how long has
416
00:29:56.960 --> 00:30:00.640
he been on the team. I
love him me too, I remember whatever,
417
00:30:02.039 --> 00:30:03.680
Yeah, he's injured every year.
I remember when you met him,
418
00:30:04.240 --> 00:30:07.680
like we weren't there, but manage
you fanboy out like you text us.
419
00:30:07.880 --> 00:30:11.119
I was wearing his jersey and he
walked right up to me. I was
420
00:30:11.119 --> 00:30:15.960
all fat and disgusting. He should
have called you a do he really should
421
00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:22.680
have. Hey, dork, you
want your picture? I mean, although
422
00:30:22.680 --> 00:30:25.200
it is kind of like when you
and I go to metal shows and we
423
00:30:25.240 --> 00:30:27.880
meet band members. We were wearing
their shirts. Yeah, I think they
424
00:30:27.960 --> 00:30:32.599
never think it's stupid. So maybe
maybe Lane, maybe he was like flattered,
425
00:30:32.640 --> 00:30:33.839
but yeah, maybe maybe. I
mean, he's the one that came
426
00:30:33.880 --> 00:30:36.720
up to me. I didn't even
see him. It was it was when
427
00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:40.519
the draft was in Philly. Yeah, yes, right, yep, all
428
00:30:40.640 --> 00:30:42.839
right, Well you know what they
got to get a veteran defensive tackle for
429
00:30:42.880 --> 00:30:47.519
sure, And let us know what
you're thinking about this Eagles offseason, specifically
430
00:30:47.640 --> 00:30:49.519
defensive tackle. We'd love to hear
from you, Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail
431
00:30:49.559 --> 00:30:52.480
dot com. Love to read your
email here in the show and respond to
432
00:30:52.519 --> 00:30:59.960
it. But moving along here,
Phillies spring training has started. Thank god,
433
00:31:00.160 --> 00:31:03.039
we're get we're getting the marketing images
out there. Eric, I don't
434
00:31:03.039 --> 00:31:06.640
know. I'm on Instagram. I'm
seeing I'm seeing Trey Turner and the batter's
435
00:31:06.720 --> 00:31:10.799
cage. I'm seeing them taking some
ground balls and stuff. I'm starting to
436
00:31:10.839 --> 00:31:15.079
get excited for baseball season here.
I'm getting excited to think whether or not
437
00:31:15.119 --> 00:31:19.200
they're gonna meet the Braves once again, hopefully in the postseason and take care
438
00:31:19.240 --> 00:31:22.160
of business with that team that you
know, the Braves will win like one
439
00:31:22.240 --> 00:31:26.039
hundred and two games and then and
then the lose to the Phillies. And
440
00:31:26.240 --> 00:31:30.720
I'm just fine with that. I
know, I'm really putting the car before
441
00:31:30.720 --> 00:31:33.200
the horse here, but still,
it's great that baseball is right around the
442
00:31:33.240 --> 00:31:37.079
corner, and like I'm just I'm
really excited about it. I'm excited to
443
00:31:37.079 --> 00:31:41.240
see what's gonna happen with this pitching
staff. I'm really excited about that.
444
00:31:42.000 --> 00:31:45.680
We're gonna be talking to our friend
Jeff Kerr from CBS Sports in just a
445
00:31:45.720 --> 00:31:52.400
little bit and really want to talk
to him also about with Maryfield coming to
446
00:31:52.519 --> 00:31:56.519
this team and what he's gonna be
able to give the outfield, perhaps at
447
00:31:56.559 --> 00:32:00.400
second base as well, just a
versatile play. Don't necessarily know what we're
448
00:32:00.440 --> 00:32:06.519
gonna be getting from Johann Rojas,
Brandon Marsh He's rehabbing that knee procedure,
449
00:32:07.079 --> 00:32:10.160
so I love that move. I
mean, I'm feeling overall, dude,
450
00:32:10.200 --> 00:32:15.359
like when it comes to Philly Sports, it's like Embeed being out is absolutely
451
00:32:15.680 --> 00:32:22.559
terrible. It sucks, but we're
optimistic upon his potential return here as it
452
00:32:22.640 --> 00:32:28.200
goes for every other team, Like
it's not awful. Like it's not awful.
453
00:32:28.359 --> 00:32:31.039
And I'm like really high on the
Phillies here, even if they're just
454
00:32:31.079 --> 00:32:36.039
gonna be playing for a wildcard round. I'm really high on the Phillies being
455
00:32:36.079 --> 00:32:39.000
able to get to the postseason because
that's where this front office has positioned.
456
00:32:39.039 --> 00:32:45.519
This team hasn't been the quote greatest
offseason in the world, but I would
457
00:32:45.559 --> 00:32:50.759
give the off season a B plus
at this point because the stability is there
458
00:32:51.279 --> 00:32:53.920
for them to continue to do what
they did last year. And they came
459
00:32:54.000 --> 00:32:59.279
up. They came up a game
short against a team that was just completely
460
00:32:59.319 --> 00:33:02.559
inferior, that got hot when they
needed to get hot. Phil's got hot
461
00:33:02.720 --> 00:33:07.079
well before that, and some some
of the bats just went cold when they
462
00:33:07.119 --> 00:33:12.640
need when, you know, right
before or I should say during that NLCS.
463
00:33:12.640 --> 00:33:15.359
So anyway, I'm just really looking
forward to this season. Oh my
464
00:33:15.599 --> 00:33:21.160
god, saw am I I mean
considering the other options, right, I
465
00:33:21.200 --> 00:33:24.240
mean Sam b doesn't come back this
season, that'd be awful. Let's go
466
00:33:24.319 --> 00:33:30.839
Phillies, right, yes, But
I I you know, some of the
467
00:33:30.880 --> 00:33:36.319
storylines, they kind of they kind
of go along with your typical feeling of
468
00:33:36.400 --> 00:33:39.160
like spring training. Like the nice
thing about spring training is everybody has a
469
00:33:39.200 --> 00:33:44.319
shot. Like the stories the amount
of spring training are always like and I'm
470
00:33:44.319 --> 00:33:46.680
talking about every team in the league
with the exception of the Pirates, where
471
00:33:46.680 --> 00:33:52.799
it's just it's just always dreadful,
you know, unfortunately. But are we
472
00:33:52.799 --> 00:33:55.440
going to be mediocre horrible this year? That's kind of there for them.
473
00:33:55.720 --> 00:34:00.079
But like with this team with the
with the and are still in place,
474
00:34:00.400 --> 00:34:04.839
and they took one step back last
year, did not get back the World
475
00:34:04.960 --> 00:34:07.280
Series, but man, you still
got to be hind this team. And
476
00:34:07.679 --> 00:34:13.480
I really I'm really happy that they
have kind of established themselves as this weird
477
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:17.400
team that doesn't They're like the Miami
Heat, they don't give a shit about
478
00:34:17.400 --> 00:34:22.360
the regular season, Like they've kind
of like, of course they care,
479
00:34:22.079 --> 00:34:25.239
but like they're kind of like,
let's just get in and then then we'll
480
00:34:25.320 --> 00:34:28.519
kick ass. Yeah, they don't
want to win the they don't care about
481
00:34:28.519 --> 00:34:30.880
winning the NL East. At this
point, it's like day it's a foregone
482
00:34:30.920 --> 00:34:34.199
conclusion that the Braves are likely going
to be winning the division, but they
483
00:34:34.199 --> 00:34:37.920
don't care. And because of the
way the playoffs works banded, they can
484
00:34:37.000 --> 00:34:40.039
do that. They just got to
kind of sneak in and then let's go
485
00:34:40.079 --> 00:34:43.760
from there. And I kind of
like that, like like, give give
486
00:34:43.760 --> 00:34:46.920
your older players some rest. But
you know, some of the some of
487
00:34:46.960 --> 00:34:52.519
the stories, I mean, Johann
Rojas can only get better. I mean,
488
00:34:52.199 --> 00:34:57.400
what a great experience for a young
player getting to play in those final
489
00:34:57.519 --> 00:35:00.880
regular season games and then into like
the playoffs. That was pretty cool.
490
00:35:00.840 --> 00:35:06.239
I'm reading a lot about Colby Allard, who's going to be starting the first
491
00:35:06.280 --> 00:35:09.679
spring training and like, I'm I'm
not really feeling that one. Jeff,
492
00:35:09.760 --> 00:35:13.599
I'll be honest with you, No, I'm not either. But it's like
493
00:35:13.639 --> 00:35:16.280
you said, you don't know what's
necessarily gonna happen in spring training. I
494
00:35:16.320 --> 00:35:19.880
mean, who could see again?
Like I said, I'm gonna be talking
495
00:35:19.880 --> 00:35:22.400
to Jeff Kerr from CBS Sports in
a little bit, and I know I'm
496
00:35:22.400 --> 00:35:25.039
gonna be bringing up to him the
fact that, you know, this farm
497
00:35:25.159 --> 00:35:30.840
system actually has produced some value,
especially this past year it did. I
498
00:35:30.840 --> 00:35:37.639
mean we saw uh, Roger Clemens
kid forgetting his name right now, Cody
499
00:35:37.639 --> 00:35:40.000
Clemens. You know, we saw
Cody Clemens come up O. Ryan Kirkering.
500
00:35:40.360 --> 00:35:45.519
Those are two pretty good storylines of
guys being able to come up from
501
00:35:45.559 --> 00:35:50.119
the farm system to really help the
team. And during spring training, anything
502
00:35:50.159 --> 00:35:52.119
can happen with regard to you know
what. Okay, we're seeing this guy
503
00:35:52.159 --> 00:35:55.559
over here. Wow, we didn't
know he had this in him. He's
504
00:35:55.599 --> 00:35:58.679
hot right out of the gate.
Let's bring him on the forty man,
505
00:35:58.760 --> 00:36:02.360
Let's see what he's got. So
I'm really excited and the experience can only
506
00:36:02.360 --> 00:36:08.079
help because when they brought Kirkering into
his first playoff appearance, he was awesome,
507
00:36:08.119 --> 00:36:12.159
and then that second one he look
like he might have shited his pants.
508
00:36:12.679 --> 00:36:15.119
Like but that's what do you expect
from a twenty year old? Like
509
00:36:15.159 --> 00:36:17.039
that makes you know, that makes
perfect sense. And that getting that experience
510
00:36:17.039 --> 00:36:22.679
on your belt on a really good
team can only help the only the only
511
00:36:22.719 --> 00:36:27.280
thing. You can just be positive
about this team. There's really nothing to
512
00:36:27.320 --> 00:36:30.079
look at and be like ugh,
Like the bats went cold when they shouldn't
513
00:36:30.079 --> 00:36:35.280
have. But you have those bats
in house that they can go off.
514
00:36:35.280 --> 00:36:38.639
Like we watched the first round of
the playoffs and holy shit where they scary,
515
00:36:38.800 --> 00:36:43.760
right, But they can just keep
that going. They can make the
516
00:36:43.760 --> 00:36:47.360
World Series again. But you're you're
one hundred percent right. The starting pitching
517
00:36:47.440 --> 00:36:52.280
is the key. The bullpen is
always going to be a question. But
518
00:36:52.320 --> 00:36:59.760
that's that's every baseball team. It
really started meging the resigned Nola is Zach
519
00:36:59.760 --> 00:37:01.519
Wie Like, is this who Zach
Wheeler is? I think I think this
520
00:37:01.559 --> 00:37:06.039
is who he is now? Oh
yeah, Like the injury kind of bugs
521
00:37:06.199 --> 00:37:10.039
maybe maybe gone from his career.
Is that one two punch enough? Is
522
00:37:10.079 --> 00:37:16.400
there someone else that is in the
farm system on the trade market eventually that
523
00:37:16.480 --> 00:37:21.760
can like they they kind of needed
that one more arm last year, you
524
00:37:21.800 --> 00:37:24.480
know, and maybe that happens this
year and they go out and get someone
525
00:37:24.480 --> 00:37:30.480
else. But man, I'm optimistic. I love the signing of a wit
526
00:37:30.679 --> 00:37:35.000
Merrifield, say it, wit Maryfield? Yeah, yeah, yeah, like
527
00:37:35.320 --> 00:37:37.400
what a Actually, he's kind of
a perfect player for this team because they
528
00:37:37.559 --> 00:37:44.519
yes, they have superstars at multiple
positions. If this was a cap league,
529
00:37:44.599 --> 00:37:46.599
they'd be so way the fuck capped
out right, yes, like to
530
00:37:46.679 --> 00:37:51.039
bringing a guy for one year eight
million bucks and could play all over the
531
00:37:51.079 --> 00:37:53.679
field and he's not expected to play
every day. Like who I heard?
532
00:37:53.800 --> 00:37:57.559
I saw people on Twitter complaining about
him, Like what are you complaining?
533
00:37:57.639 --> 00:38:00.360
Were they complaining about he was an
All Star of the past couple years?
534
00:38:00.400 --> 00:38:05.280
My god, well we know he
was. That's not what we're signing him
535
00:38:05.280 --> 00:38:09.480
for, you exactly, asshole.
As an insurance policy, he really is.
536
00:38:09.559 --> 00:38:14.280
And to give some guys off and
you're still gonna have productivity. A
537
00:38:14.280 --> 00:38:17.760
guy who's batting two eighty. Come
on, give me a guy that can
538
00:38:17.760 --> 00:38:22.000
play one hundred and twenty games this
year and filling it first or short if
539
00:38:22.000 --> 00:38:25.599
he has to, or yeah,
the field and he bats to eighty and
540
00:38:25.679 --> 00:38:30.360
gives you like twenty home run like
perfect, awesome, I'll take it.
541
00:38:30.480 --> 00:38:34.079
Yep, it's a discount, so
absolutely really quick with the starting pitching,
542
00:38:34.199 --> 00:38:37.199
the one guy I'm really gonna be
keeping my eye on, of course,
543
00:38:37.599 --> 00:38:40.119
as the regular season starts, is
Ranger Suarez. I mean, last year
544
00:38:40.559 --> 00:38:45.920
he had a two point four war
win loss was four and six, four
545
00:38:45.960 --> 00:38:50.239
point one, eight e er And
obviously I'd love to see that get down,
546
00:38:50.320 --> 00:38:52.559
like, you know, maybe three
point five, three point six somewhere
547
00:38:52.559 --> 00:38:58.320
maybe around there. But Ranger Swarez
is a guy where he's gonna go,
548
00:38:58.480 --> 00:39:02.000
how he's going to develop here in
twenty twenty four. That's a particular storyline
549
00:39:02.000 --> 00:39:07.239
that I'm really gonna be honing in
on. Yeah, he was disappointing last
550
00:39:07.320 --> 00:39:10.440
year compared to the previous season.
Yes, he didn't know. I think
551
00:39:10.480 --> 00:39:14.039
the injuries really kind of hurt that, Like he had that eye of the
552
00:39:14.079 --> 00:39:19.119
tiger. I'm like, I'm a
silent killer kind of deale the season prior.
553
00:39:20.719 --> 00:39:24.800
And I think it's pretty big,
pretty huge if he makes the leap,
554
00:39:25.400 --> 00:39:30.880
the minor leap to like being a
super solid number three yep, and
555
00:39:30.920 --> 00:39:34.960
he's a lefty like that, that
could that could be a like the difference
556
00:39:34.960 --> 00:39:37.719
between them getting out of the first
round in the second round maybe in the
557
00:39:37.719 --> 00:39:40.039
World Series. Like I think that's
because you got time on Walker, who's
558
00:39:40.079 --> 00:39:44.000
going to fill that fourth spot?
And god knows who fills out the fifth
559
00:39:44.000 --> 00:39:46.599
spot, but like if he can
really make that leap, and like he's
560
00:39:46.599 --> 00:39:51.960
almost like a he's still kind of
young's he's almost like that third year NBA
561
00:39:52.039 --> 00:39:53.800
player is like, all right,
dude, you average eighteen points last year.
562
00:39:53.840 --> 00:39:57.159
Are you going to go to twenty
two exactly? Are you going to
563
00:39:57.639 --> 00:40:01.480
two undred million dollar contract? And
maybe that that confidence and that momentum gets
564
00:40:01.480 --> 00:40:05.000
you to be a number, a
solid number two down the road. Yep,
565
00:40:05.159 --> 00:40:07.159
Like this is kind of this is
kind of a year for him.
566
00:40:07.280 --> 00:40:09.039
Like I said, if you can
get to three point five, three point
567
00:40:09.119 --> 00:40:13.480
six five, he was three point
sixty five with his era in twenty twenty
568
00:40:13.480 --> 00:40:15.519
two. I mean, if we
get that back that it's not only gonna
569
00:40:15.519 --> 00:40:19.119
be great for his career long term, but it's gonna be good for this
570
00:40:19.119 --> 00:40:22.800
Phillies team this year. So I'm
really looking forward to that. So buddy,
571
00:40:22.000 --> 00:40:25.039
I'm gonna I'm gonna let you head
out here. Any final thoughts before
572
00:40:25.199 --> 00:40:30.960
we get to our next break here? Yeah, next week, if I'm
573
00:40:30.000 --> 00:40:37.440
doing the show, Uh, sixers
are playing right? Yeah, hopefully something
574
00:40:37.480 --> 00:40:42.519
else happens. Yes, oh yes, we might have to do it.
575
00:40:42.519 --> 00:40:45.360
We might have to do a list, O saying, okay, all right,
576
00:40:45.400 --> 00:40:46.679
you know what, we haven't done
on top three list in a while.
577
00:40:46.679 --> 00:40:49.480
We were trying to. I was
trying to get back into that and
578
00:40:49.480 --> 00:40:51.559
I kind of let that fall by
the wayside. Yeah, we got to
579
00:40:51.559 --> 00:40:53.519
do one. And I ain't complaining. I'm just saying, like, like
580
00:40:53.760 --> 00:40:57.119
it is funny, like when like
Jeff is like you can do the show,
581
00:40:57.159 --> 00:40:58.840
speak sure, and then I see
the topics, I'm like, ah
582
00:40:58.719 --> 00:41:00.599
ah, this is a shit week
for sports. There's nothing going on,
583
00:41:02.559 --> 00:41:05.840
and I should thro out there,
like maybe we do a list this week
584
00:41:05.840 --> 00:41:09.320
because like you know, I I'll
think on it and I'll send you some
585
00:41:09.360 --> 00:41:13.280
ideas. All right, list,
Yeah that sounds good. That sounds good.
586
00:41:13.320 --> 00:41:15.840
All right, buddy, we'll let
you head on. Oh don't don't
587
00:41:15.880 --> 00:41:21.400
don't think I didn't notice the uh
the car before the horse. You said
588
00:41:21.400 --> 00:41:23.800
it, damn yeah, you did. You noticed it. I did it
589
00:41:25.639 --> 00:41:29.880
because I couldn't see the force through
the tree exactly. We just got to
590
00:41:29.920 --> 00:41:32.199
do that. We gotta do the
cliche show at some point. At some
591
00:41:32.320 --> 00:41:36.960
point, we have to, all
right, buddy, I'm gonna let you
592
00:41:37.000 --> 00:41:39.000
go, folks, or take a
quick break here we will be back in
593
00:41:39.119 --> 00:41:43.440
just a bit. All right,
we are back. We are gonna get
594
00:41:43.440 --> 00:41:45.320
to what we were thrown down on
the table. Here. We got Jeff
595
00:41:45.360 --> 00:41:49.480
Kerr from CBS Sports joining us.
We got more Phillies talk coming to you.
596
00:41:50.119 --> 00:41:52.639
Stick around for it again. It's
what we're thrown down on the table
597
00:41:52.840 --> 00:41:59.199
and now on the table. It
is great to have back on the podcast.
598
00:41:59.239 --> 00:42:02.760
We love talking to him coming to
us from CBS Sports. You can
599
00:42:02.800 --> 00:42:07.840
find him on Twitter slash x at
Jeff Kerr CBS and he does a lot
600
00:42:07.920 --> 00:42:10.599
of great work out there, writing
a lot of great articles, a lot
601
00:42:10.599 --> 00:42:14.159
of great content. We've got our
friend, Jeff Kerr. How you doing,
602
00:42:14.199 --> 00:42:16.000
buddy, Thanks for joining us.
I'm doing good. You know,
603
00:42:16.000 --> 00:42:20.599
it's just going from one season to
the next these days. I don't get
604
00:42:20.639 --> 00:42:22.880
an all season anymore. Well that's
a good thing, right, I mean,
605
00:42:23.119 --> 00:42:27.280
look for my understanding, I guess
to pull back the curtain a little
606
00:42:27.280 --> 00:42:30.280
bit. You know, you gotta
you yourself. Got a contract extension with
607
00:42:30.280 --> 00:42:34.760
CBS Sports. I'm very very happy
for you. And congratulations my friend.
608
00:42:35.199 --> 00:42:38.039
So you're gonna be with us with
CBS Sports now for a while. But
609
00:42:38.079 --> 00:42:40.840
you're right, I mean, I'm
actually glad you don't, because I enjoy
610
00:42:40.960 --> 00:42:45.320
reading your content. Quite frankly,
I'm glad you don't get a break my
611
00:42:45.400 --> 00:42:49.280
friend. Oh yeah, you know, like I'll be taking my own vacations
612
00:42:49.280 --> 00:42:52.159
and stuff. But you know,
it is weird, Like what so one
613
00:42:52.199 --> 00:42:55.320
of my good buddies, Andrew to
Cheko. You know, we hang out
614
00:42:55.320 --> 00:42:59.440
a lot all outside the Eagles.
We've had him on the show number of
615
00:42:59.440 --> 00:43:01.400
times, yep, yeah, and
he's text he texts me, I think
616
00:43:01.400 --> 00:43:05.599
it was Super Bowl Sunday. He
goes so many. You get a site
617
00:43:05.599 --> 00:43:07.559
for Philly season. I'm like,
oh, yeah, that's right, I
618
00:43:07.559 --> 00:43:10.159
gotta start doing that. But I
was preparing, but I was like making
619
00:43:10.199 --> 00:43:14.880
the joke about it, right,
and you know, now not like a
620
00:43:15.079 --> 00:43:20.280
full bred Phillies here, but it
is different trying to keep up with the
621
00:43:20.400 --> 00:43:22.599
NFL, which luckily there's nothing going
on, and then you got the Phillies
622
00:43:22.639 --> 00:43:25.840
so that there's funny going on.
Absolutely there is. You know. Look,
623
00:43:25.840 --> 00:43:30.639
they're down in Clearwater reporting to string
the spring training, and like,
624
00:43:30.719 --> 00:43:35.440
I just just seeing some of the
marketing stuff on their website as I was
625
00:43:35.480 --> 00:43:38.320
talking to my co host Eric about
some of the marketing stuff with the website,
626
00:43:38.400 --> 00:43:42.840
Like, I'm just so excited for
baseball season to be here, but
627
00:43:42.880 --> 00:43:45.400
I really wanted to get into what
we're going to see with this team here
628
00:43:45.440 --> 00:43:50.960
in twenty twenty four with you,
Jeff, and specifically with one of their
629
00:43:51.000 --> 00:43:55.440
recent signings during this offseason. I
love the recent signing of Wit Maryfield Man.
630
00:43:55.760 --> 00:44:00.039
He's versatile, he's able to play
second base, played the outfield,
631
00:44:00.159 --> 00:44:04.519
and ultimately they bring him in.
I guess you know, he's an insurance
632
00:44:04.519 --> 00:44:08.639
policy for Johann Rojas and with Brandon
marsh as he's continuing to rehab that knee.
633
00:44:09.000 --> 00:44:15.320
What are your overall thoughts on this
particular offseason signing really and really what
634
00:44:15.320 --> 00:44:17.840
it means for this team here in
twenty twenty four. So I heard there
635
00:44:17.840 --> 00:44:22.000
were two names that they were targeting
for the long haul. Yeah, and
636
00:44:22.000 --> 00:44:27.400
that was with Maryfield then, and
the other was Amtibal And Maryfield was the
637
00:44:27.440 --> 00:44:30.519
guy nave been after since December,
and I think Witt was considering all his
638
00:44:30.559 --> 00:44:34.239
options. Right, You're thirty five
years old. Do you want to play
639
00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:36.039
every day? Do you want to
play for a team like the Pirates,
640
00:44:36.119 --> 00:44:37.760
want to play for a team like
the Tigers, or you know, go
641
00:44:37.840 --> 00:44:42.760
back to the Royals, or you
want opportunity to compete for a World Series.
642
00:44:42.760 --> 00:44:45.360
And like he said, he's I
don't think he's ever been to the
643
00:44:45.400 --> 00:44:50.679
postseason? Am I right on that? He may not be Well you know
644
00:44:50.719 --> 00:44:53.400
what he was on the postseason last
year? Yeah he was, yeah,
645
00:44:53.519 --> 00:44:57.639
yeah, so but those years at
the Royals and he was really good,
646
00:44:57.639 --> 00:45:01.719
they weren't good. So and I
think he wanted an actual chance to compete
647
00:45:01.760 --> 00:45:05.880
for a title, at least that's
what he sounds like. And look he's
648
00:45:05.920 --> 00:45:08.599
going to get is that bats here
one. The Brandon marsh injury changes things
649
00:45:08.639 --> 00:45:14.639
too. You need insurance policy in
case Johann Rojas can't hit again. Right,
650
00:45:14.920 --> 00:45:17.360
So, you know, Jeff,
you're thinking to yourself, Okay,
651
00:45:17.400 --> 00:45:22.599
it's make the team. You go
with Rojas and marsh What if Rojas hits
652
00:45:23.280 --> 00:45:28.119
two ten? Are you okay with
that? Or you know what the fans
653
00:45:28.119 --> 00:45:31.679
are gonna say, how did they
let not getting a centerfielder or a left
654
00:45:31.679 --> 00:45:35.480
fielder go? Right? Well,
now you go. Now you've got Brandon
655
00:45:35.480 --> 00:45:37.599
marshon center and you can play with
Maryfield and left or you know, when
656
00:45:37.599 --> 00:45:42.000
there's a tough lefty for Brandon Marshall
Price and Scott, you can put with
657
00:45:42.159 --> 00:45:45.440
merryfield in that is the right handed
bat off that bench they need. It's
658
00:45:45.440 --> 00:45:50.239
more like a super utility guy.
And I personally I love the move.
659
00:45:50.320 --> 00:45:52.360
I thought it was a move they
had to make. Absolutely I love it
660
00:45:52.360 --> 00:45:57.719
as well. And you know,
as as I'm thinking about whether it's this
661
00:45:57.840 --> 00:46:00.559
off season rate, it's not really
the off season. I mean, like
662
00:46:00.559 --> 00:46:02.320
I said, you know, in
spring training right now, but during the
663
00:46:02.360 --> 00:46:06.679
course of the offseason, I've really
been giving a lot of thought to that
664
00:46:06.840 --> 00:46:12.840
storyline surrounding Zach Wheeler and the fact
that he is likely that next player on
665
00:46:12.880 --> 00:46:17.000
this Phillies team who is going to
be potentially re signed to an extension.
666
00:46:17.119 --> 00:46:20.239
So I mean, for me,
this is of course a no brainer.
667
00:46:20.239 --> 00:46:23.239
I think for Phillies Nation, it's
a no brainer bring Zack Wheeler back just
668
00:46:23.280 --> 00:46:27.079
because of what, of course he's
meant to the starting rotation. Jeff,
669
00:46:27.599 --> 00:46:30.800
is this the next big re signing
for this team? Is Zach Wheeler that
670
00:46:30.920 --> 00:46:36.039
next guy that they definitely need to
re sign for the future. And if
671
00:46:36.119 --> 00:46:38.519
so, you know what might this
kind of an extension really really look like
672
00:46:38.559 --> 00:46:43.800
for this front office and what it
means for the rotation too? I think
673
00:46:43.800 --> 00:46:46.239
it's no brainer you bring Zack Wheeler
back. But how much are you bringing
674
00:46:46.440 --> 00:46:49.960
back for and how long is the
deal. I don't think it's gonna be
675
00:46:50.000 --> 00:46:52.000
seven years like Aaron Nolan. I'm
sure Zach Aron would love the half of
676
00:46:52.000 --> 00:46:58.119
the seven year contract fully tarantee that
ain't gonna happen. I want to know
677
00:46:58.119 --> 00:47:00.440
if it's going to be like a
three year, covered, twenty million dollar
678
00:47:00.480 --> 00:47:02.719
deal something like that, because you
got to remember, Jeff, they've never
679
00:47:02.719 --> 00:47:07.360
given over thirty million a year to
a pitcher, right Aaron oh was their
680
00:47:07.440 --> 00:47:09.519
highest paid pitcher ever, and that
was seven years, one seventy two,
681
00:47:09.920 --> 00:47:15.000
so that's under twenty five million a
year. Do you go longer with you
682
00:47:15.000 --> 00:47:19.199
know, say seven years to ten
to Zach Wheeler. I don't think that's
683
00:47:19.199 --> 00:47:22.159
gonna happen, but I think you
pay him a lot upfront and say,
684
00:47:22.159 --> 00:47:24.159
look, here's your money, here's
the years. We'll revisit this thing in
685
00:47:24.239 --> 00:47:28.039
three or four years. I think
a four year deal was more acceptable for
686
00:47:28.119 --> 00:47:30.880
Zach Wheeler. Take him all,
he's thirty eight years old. I think
687
00:47:30.920 --> 00:47:35.280
he's entrenched as the ace of this
team. And look, he's shown new
688
00:47:35.360 --> 00:47:37.840
signs of slow him down right exactly. I was actually thinking about a four
689
00:47:37.920 --> 00:47:43.599
year deal five at the absolute most. That was my initial thought. I
690
00:47:43.599 --> 00:47:45.559
think, you know, even five
years five years down the road, I
691
00:47:45.559 --> 00:47:49.280
mean that that is a long time. And you know, given Aaron Knowle's
692
00:47:49.599 --> 00:47:53.119
contract extension too or his resign,
I should say, you know, these
693
00:47:53.159 --> 00:47:55.239
guys are going to be getting a
little older here, you know, with
694
00:47:55.360 --> 00:47:59.840
the latter part of their deals here. And I do have a little trepidation
695
00:48:00.119 --> 00:48:02.360
with that. I would honestly love
a three year deal and think the Phillies
696
00:48:02.440 --> 00:48:05.960
would probably like to have a three
year deal as well. But when you
697
00:48:05.960 --> 00:48:09.239
get into that four and five range, I'm a little trepidacious about it,
698
00:48:09.320 --> 00:48:15.480
Jeff, I am too. And
again this is why injured Painter's injury hurts,
699
00:48:15.639 --> 00:48:19.840
and this is why mckabel needs to
develop, because you need to have
700
00:48:19.920 --> 00:48:22.800
guys in the pipeline. Look,
we all know the Phillies are gonna spend
701
00:48:22.840 --> 00:48:24.159
money on pitching. Yeah, there's
no doubt about it. You know,
702
00:48:24.320 --> 00:48:29.280
Jordan Montgomery is available at their price
and at their years. They're going to
703
00:48:29.280 --> 00:48:31.679
bring Jordan Montgomery in here. I
have no doubt about that. But you
704
00:48:31.800 --> 00:48:37.239
have to look at what the years
are how like I feel like, you
705
00:48:37.280 --> 00:48:40.679
know, John Milton always says stupid
money. I always feel like he uses
706
00:48:40.760 --> 00:48:45.840
smart money when it comes to this
team. That's a good phrase. I
707
00:48:45.880 --> 00:48:49.360
mean, yes, it is smart
money. I don't seriously think I think
708
00:48:49.400 --> 00:48:52.039
I'm assuming what he meant by stupid
money is that all right, we're just
709
00:48:52.079 --> 00:48:55.880
going to be spending a lot,
a lot of money. I think that's
710
00:48:55.880 --> 00:48:59.320
what he meant. But when we
look at it and we reflect on it,
711
00:48:59.400 --> 00:49:05.400
Jeff, there really hasn't been any
stupid based signings, free agent signings,
712
00:49:05.519 --> 00:49:07.639
extensions that I would say this team
is really embarked on. I mean
713
00:49:07.679 --> 00:49:10.679
they really have a bit like when
you're talking stupid, I mean, there
714
00:49:10.679 --> 00:49:15.920
are some stupid resigns, and there
are stupid free agent signings throughout the UH,
715
00:49:16.559 --> 00:49:21.360
throughout the MLB, for sure.
I don't think the Phillies have embarked
716
00:49:21.360 --> 00:49:25.360
on a stupid resigning at all.
Well, my favorite is people think that
717
00:49:25.400 --> 00:49:29.599
the cash loans deal was bad.
I'm like, well that's not Yeah,
718
00:49:29.599 --> 00:49:31.960
he was an All Star in his
second year. He makes twenty million a
719
00:49:32.039 --> 00:49:37.119
year. It's about what he's worth. Yeah, And look, I get
720
00:49:37.159 --> 00:49:39.920
the contract is tough to trade if
they actually want to go through with it
721
00:49:40.039 --> 00:49:43.960
and trade him. But is it
the worst thing in the world to have
722
00:49:44.079 --> 00:49:46.159
the cash loans on your team?
Yeah, exactly, it's a great,
723
00:49:46.159 --> 00:49:50.760
great question. And as we're moving
along here, Jeff, you know,
724
00:49:51.000 --> 00:49:55.400
we've recently heard reports that the Phillies
they were all in on Yamamoto before he
725
00:49:55.599 --> 00:49:59.639
signed with the Dodgers. Yes,
I mean, in fact, you know
726
00:49:59.840 --> 00:50:01.719
you talking about pitching. Just you
know, you're just talking about pitching a
727
00:50:01.719 --> 00:50:07.360
couple of minutes ago, and just
how the Phillies front office wants to concentrate
728
00:50:07.400 --> 00:50:09.480
on that. In fact, Phillies
front office they wanted to give more money
729
00:50:09.519 --> 00:50:14.440
than the Dodgers. You would have
been making more in Philly than out in
730
00:50:14.480 --> 00:50:17.880
Los Angeles. I mean, I
think their pursuit of Yamamoto shows that they're
731
00:50:17.920 --> 00:50:23.320
serious about engaging with the Japanese baseball
market well into the future. They've ignored
732
00:50:23.320 --> 00:50:28.119
this market for way, way too
long. They've ignored the international market in
733
00:50:28.239 --> 00:50:31.679
general for way too long up until
the past couple years here. So what
734
00:50:31.719 --> 00:50:37.400
does being more active in the Japanese
market really mean for this team and this
735
00:50:37.559 --> 00:50:40.679
organization in the future, Jeff.
So I'll add more to the Yamamoto thing
736
00:50:42.039 --> 00:50:45.039
I was told back in December.
They offer more money than the Dodgers,
737
00:50:45.039 --> 00:50:50.400
but again not really covering it,
like with people. You know me,
738
00:50:50.480 --> 00:50:53.920
Jeff, I don't tweet anything unless
I'm convinced or convicted of it, right,
739
00:50:54.000 --> 00:50:58.000
yeah, you know, and I
wanted to do it, but like
740
00:50:58.159 --> 00:51:00.480
you know what, I know this
for fact, they offer more money.
741
00:51:00.519 --> 00:51:04.559
But I'm not a Major League Baseball
rier. I'm not a Phillies insider.
742
00:51:04.840 --> 00:51:07.960
I just know people in there that
know that are in the know, and
743
00:51:08.000 --> 00:51:10.480
I'm like, so, and I
asked them, so what happens? Just
744
00:51:10.559 --> 00:51:14.360
didn't want to come here? Yeah, And I'm like, and I think
745
00:51:14.400 --> 00:51:16.719
that's what it is. In Japan. It feels like the only hero of
746
00:51:16.719 --> 00:51:22.639
a couple of teams, and it's
like the Dodgers, the Yankees, the
747
00:51:22.639 --> 00:51:27.800
the Red Sox, the Mets,
the Angels, the Mariners. Like like
748
00:51:27.800 --> 00:51:30.119
like in Japan, right, you
and I watched you bum professional baseball?
749
00:51:30.119 --> 00:51:32.559
How many teams do you think you
and I can name off the top of
750
00:51:32.599 --> 00:51:37.679
our heads? Right? Probably a
lot? Yeah, Like the jod Marin
751
00:51:37.760 --> 00:51:40.000
Johnson they're the team, right,
like like they're the Yankees of that league.
752
00:51:40.039 --> 00:51:44.679
So that's probably how they feel over
here. So I think for the
753
00:51:44.719 --> 00:51:51.760
Phillies to get into that presence and
basically tell everybody from Japan, look,
754
00:51:52.000 --> 00:51:54.320
we are willing to spend money if
we feel you're worth it. It's like
755
00:51:54.360 --> 00:51:59.719
the old moneyball sake. It's not
about the money, Billy, it's it's
756
00:51:59.760 --> 00:52:02.039
tell you that you're worth it.
Yes, Yamamoto was worth it for that
757
00:52:02.320 --> 00:52:07.239
absolutely, for twelve years, three
fifty. I think that would have gotten
758
00:52:07.280 --> 00:52:09.760
it done for a lot of people. I think, I honestly think if
759
00:52:09.800 --> 00:52:13.199
they had a chance, they would
have paid, showing you have Tani a
760
00:52:13.199 --> 00:52:16.840
lot of money. Yeah, but
but Yamamoto was the guy I was gonna
761
00:52:16.840 --> 00:52:20.119
say. I wonder if it really
came down to And I don't know if
762
00:52:20.159 --> 00:52:22.159
you have any info on this too, but you know, there were reports
763
00:52:22.199 --> 00:52:24.679
that he just wanted to stay on
the West Coast, you know, because
764
00:52:24.719 --> 00:52:30.920
it's closer to Japan, and and
that those hours of difference really do mean
765
00:52:30.960 --> 00:52:35.039
a lot to some folks coming from
Japan are coming from Asia, Uh,
766
00:52:35.239 --> 00:52:37.840
it does matter to them. I
don't know if there's any validity to that
767
00:52:37.920 --> 00:52:40.079
at all. Yeah, I don't
know anythink, but it would make sense.
768
00:52:40.159 --> 00:52:43.719
The atonic thing you know what,
Jeff, the only thing that bothered
769
00:52:43.719 --> 00:52:46.840
me about a Tani signing with the
Dodgers is the defer money. Oh yeah,
770
00:52:47.000 --> 00:52:51.079
Like I was happy for the Dodgers
franchise. So like, Okay,
771
00:52:51.159 --> 00:52:52.880
that's awesome. You guys got them, you have the money. You've been
772
00:52:52.880 --> 00:52:57.679
waiting for signing like this for a
long time. You basically waited this out
773
00:52:58.000 --> 00:53:00.840
and you got your guy. And
then you're hearing about the pay. I'm
774
00:53:00.840 --> 00:53:05.480
like, oh, come on,
I know it's perfectly in the rule book,
775
00:53:05.519 --> 00:53:07.639
but there has to be like,
when you pay a guy that much
776
00:53:07.679 --> 00:53:10.840
money, you should only be allowed
at the fir half of that. Yeah,
777
00:53:12.039 --> 00:53:14.559
you just have to you should have
to have that in your books.
778
00:53:14.679 --> 00:53:17.920
Absolutely. I'm just glad that the
Phillies are going to be engaging more in
779
00:53:17.960 --> 00:53:22.920
the Japanese market. We've seen them
engaging in the more in the Caribbean market
780
00:53:23.000 --> 00:53:27.440
as well, and and uh,
you know, getting down into the Dominican
781
00:53:27.480 --> 00:53:32.400
Republic more. I think that this
Phillies organization, Jeff has been uh in
782
00:53:32.440 --> 00:53:37.360
a in a way, pretty pretty
closed off to certain parts of the world
783
00:53:37.800 --> 00:53:43.840
over these years. But Dave Dombrowski
wanting to venture out into other parts of
784
00:53:43.840 --> 00:53:47.960
the world to understand and realize that
there is talent available and talent that wants
785
00:53:47.960 --> 00:53:52.480
to come to the United States,
perhaps wants to come to Philadelphia. I
786
00:53:52.519 --> 00:53:57.039
think it's a great thing for this
organization. They're they're ahead of other organizations
787
00:53:57.079 --> 00:53:59.519
for sure. I mean, just
take a look at the Pittsburgh Pirates you
788
00:53:59.599 --> 00:54:01.559
out. They're there's certainly ahead of
that organization. But it's really good to
789
00:54:01.599 --> 00:54:07.800
see. I feel like since John
Milton has taken over as the primary owner
790
00:54:07.800 --> 00:54:13.400
of this team, this is a
franchise that is worth playing for. Treats
791
00:54:13.400 --> 00:54:15.639
his employees well. He treats him
like how he ran cigar business. He
792
00:54:15.719 --> 00:54:22.840
treats them all with respect. I
got a story about John Milton when my
793
00:54:22.920 --> 00:54:27.320
cousin passed away. My cousin worked
for John Milton the cigar company for years.
794
00:54:27.360 --> 00:54:31.679
He retired for them. When pretty
much when he passed away, John
795
00:54:31.760 --> 00:54:37.400
Milton sent something out and you know, he died of throw cancer, Like
796
00:54:37.559 --> 00:54:39.159
just send something out to him,
you know, just thanking him for all
797
00:54:39.159 --> 00:54:42.280
his years a work. And he
did this when he retired too. But
798
00:54:43.119 --> 00:54:45.440
I thought that was a really cool
thing, Like he didn't have to give
799
00:54:45.119 --> 00:54:50.239
a ratch, you know what about
him but that just shows you the type
800
00:54:50.239 --> 00:54:53.559
of person John Milton is, Like
I got, I was fortunate I got
801
00:54:53.599 --> 00:54:59.000
to meet John Milton this year at
the Phillies holiday thing and it was just
802
00:55:00.119 --> 00:55:02.559
blue. I'm just walking, you
know, I got my Phillies cap on
803
00:55:04.320 --> 00:55:07.119
and I just go up and introduce
myself to them and we talked for ten
804
00:55:07.159 --> 00:55:09.679
minutes. I thought it was great. You know, he's just walking like
805
00:55:09.679 --> 00:55:13.639
like he's there, and like,
you know, if you were a hardcore
806
00:55:13.679 --> 00:55:17.199
Phillies fan, like you knew who
he was, right right, Because there
807
00:55:17.199 --> 00:55:21.119
were some people that that that that
like they had to do double takes,
808
00:55:21.159 --> 00:55:22.480
yeah, and I'm like, there
was no double take. I'm like,
809
00:55:22.519 --> 00:55:27.000
that's that's John Milton. You don't
see that out of owners. You definitely
810
00:55:27.000 --> 00:55:30.000
don't see that out Jeffrey Lori or
you know, Josh Harris, right,
811
00:55:30.119 --> 00:55:34.000
very true, Yeah, very true. Yeah. You don't see too many
812
00:55:34.000 --> 00:55:38.559
owners throwing out baseball's at the end
of their postseason games to the crowd like
813
00:55:38.679 --> 00:55:44.079
John Middleton has. For sure.
I think that's what bothers me about Phillies
814
00:55:44.119 --> 00:55:46.400
fans sometimes, like you and I
know this, there's a lot that just
815
00:55:46.440 --> 00:55:51.000
watching October and they like to call
this team chokers and they call this and
816
00:55:51.079 --> 00:55:52.480
that. Yeah, you know,
all the same old Phillies. I'm like,
817
00:55:52.480 --> 00:55:55.079
they're not the same old Phillies.
If you watch them, if you
818
00:55:55.119 --> 00:55:59.320
knew who their owner was, and
if you know how how they operate,
819
00:55:59.360 --> 00:56:02.400
they're not the Pies. Like I
think, it's a team that even when
820
00:56:02.440 --> 00:56:06.079
things get banned, they're going to
buy their way out. Yeah. Yeah,
821
00:56:06.480 --> 00:56:07.920
look, and that's the world we're
living in right now in terms of
822
00:56:07.960 --> 00:56:12.679
Major League Baseball. If you want
to be successful, that's that's what's happening
823
00:56:13.079 --> 00:56:15.760
right now with a number of teams
throughout this league. But you know,
824
00:56:16.559 --> 00:56:21.239
I also wanted to talk about the
farm system with you as well, Jeff,
825
00:56:21.280 --> 00:56:24.559
because I think it is fair to
say that we've been seeing some productivity
826
00:56:24.800 --> 00:56:28.440
in recent years coming from the Phillies
farm system. I mean, last year
827
00:56:28.440 --> 00:56:31.679
they utilized and they got some really
good work from Cody Clemens, Ryan Kirkering,
828
00:56:31.760 --> 00:56:35.360
he came up to help the team
as well. As we saw in
829
00:56:35.400 --> 00:56:39.559
twenty twenty three, the farm system
has been changing. It's the investments that
830
00:56:39.639 --> 00:56:45.920
John Middleton has made during the course
of his tenure as the owner, and
831
00:56:45.960 --> 00:56:51.119
also Dave Dombrowski as well. Kind
of you know, making some changes here
832
00:56:51.159 --> 00:56:55.599
and there in Lehigh Valley and Redding
for sure. Is there anyone that you've
833
00:56:55.639 --> 00:57:00.719
been really looking at it double A
or even TRIPLEA who you think could potentially
834
00:57:00.760 --> 00:57:05.000
help this team throughout the twenty twenty
four season as we saw some help coming
835
00:57:05.079 --> 00:57:08.159
up that came up in twenty twenty
three from the farm system. What are
836
00:57:08.199 --> 00:57:10.960
your thoughts here? So I actually
thought you were going to go in a
837
00:57:12.000 --> 00:57:14.639
different direction with this because there's gonna
be a guy that's gonna be playing for
838
00:57:14.639 --> 00:57:19.000
Reading this year. Remember this name, Gabrielle Rincones Junior. Oh, yes,
839
00:57:19.239 --> 00:57:21.559
yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm
sure you've heard him. Yep,
840
00:57:21.559 --> 00:57:23.239
I'm sure he heard of him.
So you know he was in Clearward,
841
00:57:23.320 --> 00:57:27.679
Jersey Shore last year hit about fifteen
Hume runs. I think he's gonna break
842
00:57:27.679 --> 00:57:30.960
out of writing this year. A
lot of those kids from Clearwater and Jersey
843
00:57:31.039 --> 00:57:34.360
Shore are going to be him writing. Now. Remember the Phillies had a
844
00:57:34.400 --> 00:57:37.800
really good lower level system last year, while those kids are going to be
845
00:57:37.880 --> 00:57:42.760
up there now. Aiden Miller in
God, I always forget Crawford's first date.
846
00:57:43.719 --> 00:57:46.880
Uh, oh my gosh, justin
Craft for justin Craft. There you
847
00:57:46.920 --> 00:57:50.480
go yeah, I wanted to say
JP, and I'm like, that's not
848
00:57:50.599 --> 00:57:52.400
right, right if he's on the
area and he was in the system,
849
00:57:52.639 --> 00:57:58.840
so they won't be up in writing. Maybe Crawford might if they wanted to
850
00:57:58.880 --> 00:58:01.679
take that big leap, But Gabrielle
Ridcone should be in rank. That's a
851
00:58:01.679 --> 00:58:06.320
guy that I don't know if he's
gonna actually contribute to the Philopi Phillies in
852
00:58:06.320 --> 00:58:08.079
twenty twenty four. Like, oh, the oryan kirk Ring story is just
853
00:58:08.119 --> 00:58:13.039
phenomenal. I remember I remember seeing
in the press box with guys and writing
854
00:58:13.119 --> 00:58:17.559
in July and we were watching Kirkering. This this guy's he might be in
855
00:58:17.559 --> 00:58:21.280
Triple A in a week or two. He was, and you know,
856
00:58:21.480 --> 00:58:23.679
and then you know he actually was, and then like you start thinking,
857
00:58:23.719 --> 00:58:27.559
wow, he he could pitch in
the majors right now, like the Redding's
858
00:58:27.599 --> 00:58:30.440
bullpen was directed last year. Unless
he was pitching, he was the only
859
00:58:30.480 --> 00:58:35.039
guy worth pitching on that team last
year. You know, mick Abel,
860
00:58:35.320 --> 00:58:38.360
his control was. If Mickabel could
fix his slider and get that control right
861
00:58:38.760 --> 00:58:43.480
with his breaking pitches, he could
contribute to this team this year in some
862
00:58:43.480 --> 00:58:46.639
way shape or because they need depth
in their triple A like Spencer Turnbull I
863
00:58:46.639 --> 00:58:50.760
think can make the team. Who
they just signed, I think, uh,
864
00:58:50.920 --> 00:58:52.800
Kobe Allard's gonna be in Lee High. I think Abel's gonna be in
865
00:58:52.880 --> 00:58:57.760
Lee High. Like they need depth
there. Ricardo Pinto I was told who
866
00:58:57.760 --> 00:59:00.519
they just signed last week. He's
basically going to be a starter Lee High.
867
00:59:00.639 --> 00:59:02.960
So that's pretty much why they signed
a lot of these guys. But
868
00:59:04.320 --> 00:59:07.039
yeah, Gabrielle the Rincons is the
guy I will watch in terms of guys
869
00:59:07.039 --> 00:59:12.480
that on the farm team, like
like maybe that could come up this year.
870
00:59:12.559 --> 00:59:15.119
That's a little tougher to predict,
like Abel will probably able will probably
871
00:59:15.159 --> 00:59:19.880
be my my. I don't think
Simon Muziaddi is a thing anymore, Like
872
00:59:19.960 --> 00:59:22.760
think, Okay, it just seemed
like he was there, you know how
873
00:59:22.800 --> 00:59:24.880
it is, Jeff, you're up
in that area, like he hit,
874
00:59:24.960 --> 00:59:29.440
but he just couldn't get up goodn't
exactly? Yeah, yeah, and you
875
00:59:29.519 --> 00:59:32.039
know they're telling you something then,
And you know, Western Wilson was the
876
00:59:32.039 --> 00:59:35.719
guy who actually ended up contributing to
that team last year, was on the
877
00:59:35.719 --> 00:59:38.159
postseason roster. Maybe he's the guy
that they take a look at as an
878
00:59:38.320 --> 00:59:42.079
right hand battle at the bench.
But we'll see how that works out with
879
00:59:42.119 --> 00:59:44.920
Maryfield here. Yeah. I just
remember four or five years ago, Jeff,
880
00:59:45.000 --> 00:59:47.119
the farm system it was just barren. It was there was just not
881
00:59:47.360 --> 00:59:52.320
a lot of anything going on with
any talent. And I think some of
882
00:59:52.360 --> 00:59:57.840
the changes that they made to whether
whether it was development personnel or or or
883
00:59:57.920 --> 01:00:00.239
other changes that they've made to the
farm system that we've talked to out on
884
01:00:00.280 --> 01:00:04.679
this podcast over the years, is
that it's actually working. We're actually starting
885
01:00:04.719 --> 01:00:08.960
to see some homegrown talent where we're
starting to see the farm system actually becoming
886
01:00:09.280 --> 01:00:12.599
something that they're gonna be able to
utilize in the future, you know,
887
01:00:12.679 --> 01:00:15.679
much like not necessarily like the Braves, but you know, we're hoping to
888
01:00:15.719 --> 01:00:19.480
get to that point where you have
a robust farm system to continue to have
889
01:00:19.519 --> 01:00:23.400
future success. And I think the
foundation really is being laid there, especially
890
01:00:23.480 --> 01:00:28.039
at Double A, Triple A and
well even you said, you know,
891
01:00:28.119 --> 01:00:30.840
even even in Single A last year
and the success that we saw from certain
892
01:00:30.880 --> 01:00:35.559
players there. I think we're starting
to see the foundations of the work that's
893
01:00:35.599 --> 01:00:37.880
being put in and the investments that
have been put in by this Phillies front
894
01:00:37.920 --> 01:00:40.599
office. I think it's great to
see. Yeah, And you know what,
895
01:00:40.639 --> 01:00:44.719
it's a shame too because like even
some of the higher end guys like
896
01:00:44.760 --> 01:00:47.400
on the Prospect Lard like Carlos Dave
the Cruz like love the kid. I
897
01:00:49.400 --> 01:00:52.719
think the kid can hit, but
stretch out a lot, doesn't walk a
898
01:00:52.760 --> 01:00:57.280
ton, but he can't really play
anywhere in the places he can play,
899
01:00:57.360 --> 01:01:00.039
they're kind of blocked right now.
So like he was trade bait last year,
900
01:01:00.079 --> 01:01:02.639
I feel like he's gonna be trade
bait this year if anybody wants them.
901
01:01:02.639 --> 01:01:06.800
But it seems like he projects as
a bench piece, So maybe they
902
01:01:06.800 --> 01:01:09.440
do call a guy like him up
and as a bench piece at some point.
903
01:01:10.360 --> 01:01:14.199
I know we're not gonna see Andrew
Painter this year, which is unform
904
01:01:14.519 --> 01:01:16.199
someone like you, Jeff, because
he probably would be a lehigh right now.
905
01:01:16.199 --> 01:01:20.800
Absolutely, he absolutely would. It
stinks, but who knows, Maybe
906
01:01:20.800 --> 01:01:22.760
we'll see him at some point down
the road. But by the way,
907
01:01:22.760 --> 01:01:25.440
I want to ask you this,
do you think they handled that right last
908
01:01:25.519 --> 01:01:32.039
year? I don't know if they
handled it one hundred percent correct. I'll
909
01:01:32.039 --> 01:01:35.960
say that I don't know if they
handled it one hundred percent correct. I
910
01:01:36.000 --> 01:01:39.320
think I think there was that hope
that they were just clinging to and holding
911
01:01:39.400 --> 01:01:45.559
onto a little bit too long.
Inevitably they did the right thing, of
912
01:01:45.639 --> 01:01:49.760
course, but I don't think they
one did the right thing right off the
913
01:01:49.760 --> 01:01:52.519
bat. Yeah. So I got
a buddy who he's pitched for a long
914
01:01:52.559 --> 01:01:57.280
time. And he's not myer leagueer
majorleague pitcher or anything, right, you
915
01:01:57.280 --> 01:01:59.639
know, he pitched a long time
in high school, pitched a little bit
916
01:01:59.639 --> 01:02:02.119
in college. He never had Tommy
John surgery, but I knew people that
917
01:02:02.159 --> 01:02:07.239
did. And when Painter first had
that swelling, he said right away,
918
01:02:07.440 --> 01:02:08.920
I don't care, get the surgery. Yeah, just get it, you
919
01:02:08.960 --> 01:02:14.280
know, don't delay this, And
they did, and I remember how furious
920
01:02:14.320 --> 01:02:16.760
he was when that that was the
eventual outcome. He I could have told
921
01:02:16.800 --> 01:02:20.199
you that three weeks ago. I'm
not three months ago. I'm not a
922
01:02:20.239 --> 01:02:22.480
doctor, you know, but I
can tell you it's just as a picture,
923
01:02:23.159 --> 01:02:28.320
you know, there's elbow inflammation and
elbow swelling, and he always says,
924
01:02:28.320 --> 01:02:30.679
neither are good. Yeah, you
know, And it was one of
925
01:02:30.679 --> 01:02:36.360
those like you're twenty years old,
just get it done. I know surgery
926
01:02:36.400 --> 01:02:38.480
is always the last resort, but
it's a little different for them than it
927
01:02:38.519 --> 01:02:42.800
is for us. Definitely waited on
it a little too long, definitely.
928
01:02:43.440 --> 01:02:45.960
Yeah. And now he's out all
of this year and like he could have
929
01:02:45.000 --> 01:02:49.639
contributed to this baseball team at the
end of this year, that's gone and
930
01:02:49.679 --> 01:02:52.280
maybe that's what they wanted. I
don't know, who knows. Again,
931
01:02:52.360 --> 01:02:57.559
folks were talking to Jeff Kerr from
CBS Sports at Jeff Kerr CBS on Twitter
932
01:02:57.599 --> 01:03:00.559
slash X, Jeff, are you
over on Are you over on threads?
933
01:03:00.679 --> 01:03:02.519
I think you're on threads? Are
you? I'm on threads? But I
934
01:03:02.559 --> 01:03:06.599
don't really use it, you know, is je? There's so many social
935
01:03:06.719 --> 01:03:09.000
media I do. I've been asking
folks on the podcast that come on,
936
01:03:09.039 --> 01:03:12.519
like I've been asking our guests here, you're on threads. I think you're
937
01:03:12.559 --> 01:03:15.039
on threads, and everybody says the
same thing, just like what you said.
938
01:03:15.199 --> 01:03:17.880
There's so many out there. My
gosh, I wish it was like
939
01:03:19.039 --> 01:03:22.239
I wish it was me two.
You know, you know what, I
940
01:03:22.079 --> 01:03:28.079
like threads. I feel like threads
would be better if there was no X.
941
01:03:28.320 --> 01:03:30.079
You know, like you still go
on X. Yes, I don't
942
01:03:30.119 --> 01:03:34.000
think people have made that switch.
And you know what, It's not like
943
01:03:34.039 --> 01:03:37.480
in the mid two thousands where you
made the switch from my space to Facebook,
944
01:03:37.559 --> 01:03:39.239
right right. I just think people
are just sick of this stuff.
945
01:03:39.599 --> 01:03:46.960
And I feel like threads is how
Twitter was ten years ago, where the
946
01:03:47.119 --> 01:03:52.719
dumb people aren't on it. You
know where I'm going with this, y
947
01:03:52.480 --> 01:03:57.519
Yeah, see, I still love
Facebook, and then all of a sudden,
948
01:03:58.519 --> 01:04:00.199
the Facebook crowd got banned, so
I went to Twitter, and now
949
01:04:00.280 --> 01:04:03.360
the Twitter crowds baby, and now
like, I kind of want to go
950
01:04:03.440 --> 01:04:06.880
on threads, but I just don't
want to commit more time to something I'm
951
01:04:06.880 --> 01:04:10.599
not making money off. I hear
you. But by the way, Jeff,
952
01:04:11.719 --> 01:04:15.119
I try not to insult people.
I don't think you do. I
953
01:04:15.119 --> 01:04:18.320
don't think that you Yeah, but
you know when I always make the insult,
954
01:04:18.360 --> 01:04:21.400
like you pay for Twitter? Sometimes
I gotta watch that because there are
955
01:04:21.719 --> 01:04:26.800
I do have some friends that are
reporters that they do pay for and I
956
01:04:26.880 --> 01:04:29.039
kind of want con front like why
don't you do that? I know,
957
01:04:29.440 --> 01:04:31.400
yeah, no matter what side of
the fence you're on. I like,
958
01:04:31.599 --> 01:04:33.400
oh, yeah, it doesn't matter
what side of the fence you're on.
959
01:04:33.519 --> 01:04:36.119
Necessarily when it comes to sports,
I don't think you know, I mean,
960
01:04:36.280 --> 01:04:42.280
is it really important to have certain
things bumped? Like certain replies bumped
961
01:04:42.360 --> 01:04:44.800
up and stuff. I don't know. I don't think the blue check mark
962
01:04:44.920 --> 01:04:47.960
means what it used to. Of
course we know that, but I don't
963
01:04:48.000 --> 01:04:51.320
know what else it gets you really
in terms of how you're going to be
964
01:04:51.440 --> 01:04:56.440
more productive, We'll be able to
obtain more information, valuable information for you,
965
01:04:56.599 --> 01:04:59.880
your brand, whatever it is.
I just don't see where the blue
966
01:05:00.039 --> 01:05:02.679
check mark comes into play anymore and
where it's valuable. I've I've talked to
967
01:05:02.760 --> 01:05:06.119
some people on LinkedIn about it,
like just just sound like curiosity. I
968
01:05:06.199 --> 01:05:09.639
won't pay for it unless my company
pays for it. Let's just put that
969
01:05:09.920 --> 01:05:13.239
that's where I'll sell out, but
I will not personally pay for it.
970
01:05:13.440 --> 01:05:15.679
But they so they went. So
I talked to some people on LinkedIn.
971
01:05:15.760 --> 01:05:18.000
Some people are into that, right, and they're like, you know,
972
01:05:18.920 --> 01:05:23.639
you can make some money off just
your reporting, off your Twitter. They
973
01:05:23.679 --> 01:05:27.159
said that is the best that's been
fit off off because even when you tweet
974
01:05:27.199 --> 01:05:30.079
your opinion, you probably could make
a couple bucks out of it. And
975
01:05:30.159 --> 01:05:32.239
I'm like, fine, I don't
need the money, right, I just
976
01:05:32.280 --> 01:05:36.199
don't need it. So some people
do. I get it, but it's
977
01:05:36.320 --> 01:05:40.119
just I don't know. It just
doesn't. It's like you said, the
978
01:05:40.119 --> 01:05:43.079
blue check mark doesn't mean but the
blue check mark used to me, and
979
01:05:43.800 --> 01:05:46.559
that means something to me. It's
like when when I see the average Joe
980
01:05:47.159 --> 01:05:51.119
have it and I have to see
their response because they have it, it
981
01:05:51.800 --> 01:05:56.079
kind of drives me nuts. Link
It would drive me nuts too if I
982
01:05:56.159 --> 01:05:59.800
were you. But I do have
to say, folks again at Jeff KERCBS.
983
01:06:00.039 --> 01:06:04.480
Jeff is a fantastic on that platform, actually giving really valuable information,
984
01:06:04.960 --> 01:06:10.280
interesting data all the time. Give
him a follow if you are not already.
985
01:06:10.480 --> 01:06:14.000
And as we're closing things out here, Jeff, again, appreciate you
986
01:06:14.079 --> 01:06:16.880
taking the time, but as we're
continuing to you know, look at spring
987
01:06:17.000 --> 01:06:20.800
training, look at what this twenty
twenty four Philly season might be. No,
988
01:06:20.920 --> 01:06:24.599
it's a general question, but you
know, what's the biggest storyline in
989
01:06:24.679 --> 01:06:27.960
your opinion, that we're really going
to need to keep our eyes on throughout
990
01:06:27.960 --> 01:06:31.159
Philly spring training here? You know
what, I still think, Jeff,
991
01:06:31.679 --> 01:06:35.840
could they add somebody else? Like
and I thought, you know, even
992
01:06:35.920 --> 01:06:43.519
before Maryfield, there's some talks about
Jordia Montgomery. Yeah, you know I
993
01:06:43.639 --> 01:06:45.840
mentioned him like three or four times, right right, Yeah, Like there
994
01:06:45.960 --> 01:06:51.360
is some truth to it that they
are interested, but at their price exactly,
995
01:06:51.480 --> 01:06:54.880
they're not. They're just not going
to sign this guy to a five
996
01:06:54.960 --> 01:06:57.159
year, a half and twenty five
million. I'd be shocked that they did
997
01:06:57.360 --> 01:07:00.199
that. They did. I'm again, but it feels like they're getting in
998
01:07:00.960 --> 01:07:05.119
Milton's head, or at least Nebrawski
is, Hey, you know what there
999
01:07:05.199 --> 01:07:09.599
is July. Yeah, we all
have to get one of these people like
1000
01:07:09.960 --> 01:07:13.719
we can go for I feel like
this is the year they will go for
1001
01:07:14.199 --> 01:07:17.079
ye And I hate when people say
they haven't done anything, so all say,
1002
01:07:17.079 --> 01:07:19.679
I'm like, well, what really
did they need to improve upon?
1003
01:07:19.840 --> 01:07:24.840
I think it was a B plus
off season so far. I mean they
1004
01:07:24.880 --> 01:07:27.679
spent a lot of money. They
spent They spent the second most money in
1005
01:07:27.760 --> 01:07:30.079
baseball, beyond only the Dodgers.
It's I'm sorry they didn't get Shoe a
1006
01:07:30.159 --> 01:07:34.079
Otani. I mean David signed Al
Momoto. I feel like the fan hype
1007
01:07:34.119 --> 01:07:38.079
for this team would have been incredible. It would have been an A plus
1008
01:07:38.159 --> 01:07:41.840
off season for sure. Yes,
and I think that I think a lot
1009
01:07:41.880 --> 01:07:45.960
of the true fans that watch this
team now know that we're getting a lot
1010
01:07:46.039 --> 01:07:48.840
of these people that watch them in
October. Like, I was already with
1011
01:07:48.920 --> 01:07:53.159
a guy on Facebook yesterday. It
was on the w I P page and
1012
01:07:53.239 --> 01:07:56.360
he just say, Bryce Harper in
the two biggest series of his life.
1013
01:07:56.400 --> 01:07:59.800
He choked. I'm like, are
we just going to ignore what he did?
1014
01:08:00.079 --> 01:08:01.639
Game five? Well, they were
up three to one, that was
1015
01:08:01.719 --> 01:08:05.559
his thing. I'm like, dude, you don't know the sport man like
1016
01:08:06.480 --> 01:08:10.840
like, it's okay to admit you
only just very misguided. Exactly, very
1017
01:08:10.920 --> 01:08:15.559
misguided for sure. But I think
that's a great, great theme and storyline
1018
01:08:15.599 --> 01:08:18.239
to take into uh this coming season
is are they actually going to sign some
1019
01:08:18.359 --> 01:08:21.000
more talent? So we're certainly going
to be monitoring. And I know you
1020
01:08:21.199 --> 01:08:27.000
are my friend again folks at Jeff
kerse CBS on Twitter, slash x and
1021
01:08:27.399 --> 01:08:29.720
my friend. It was great having
you on the pod. Thank you for
1022
01:08:29.840 --> 01:08:31.680
taking the time, come back join
us down the road. Love to talk
1023
01:08:31.720 --> 01:08:34.600
to you as always, my friend, absolutely, Jeff. You know what
1024
01:08:34.840 --> 01:08:39.880
I think I'm nervous about this season
though, just you know, writing about
1025
01:08:39.880 --> 01:08:43.199
this team now, yeah, could
they win more games and lose to the
1026
01:08:43.279 --> 01:08:45.840
Brais in the playoffs? Oh gosh, I don't know the mat of Braves
1027
01:08:45.000 --> 01:08:49.079
number though. I mean Curry history
tells us that. I love when people
1028
01:08:49.199 --> 01:08:53.199
say, like, beating those Brace
teams don't mean the thing. I'm like,
1029
01:08:53.279 --> 01:08:55.880
yeah, they do. The Bras
have been the Braves have been better
1030
01:08:55.920 --> 01:08:58.359
than that. I knew they were
going to beat the Brais in the playoffs?
1031
01:08:58.560 --> 01:09:00.079
Would they beat him in that series? A true park in September?
1032
01:09:00.680 --> 01:09:04.439
And I think, I forget what
player said. It might have been Castelanos,
1033
01:09:05.000 --> 01:09:12.199
but we know we have that right. They know they knew then that
1034
01:09:12.520 --> 01:09:15.680
they're on the Brase radar right exactly, because the Braids kept bragging about winning
1035
01:09:15.680 --> 01:09:20.920
the division and they're like, we'll
see in the playoffs exactly. And you
1036
01:09:21.039 --> 01:09:25.520
know what that Game four I was
at. I was at pretty much every
1037
01:09:25.560 --> 01:09:29.640
playoff game but Game six and seven
of the NLCS, ironically, but that
1038
01:09:29.840 --> 01:09:32.359
Game four was probably one of the
better baseball games I saw. And I
1039
01:09:32.399 --> 01:09:35.000
thought Ronald er Kune hit the ball
out of the park from where I was
1040
01:09:35.039 --> 01:09:40.079
sitting when he hit that win Ross
came up and made that catch. Imke
1041
01:09:40.920 --> 01:09:45.399
unbelievable. I never heard that,
and I've heard this. I will see
1042
01:09:45.439 --> 01:09:48.119
this as someone who's been to a
lot of great moments for that franchise.
1043
01:09:48.199 --> 01:09:54.399
Jeff, I think there were two
moments where that it was louder than them
1044
01:09:54.479 --> 01:09:57.920
even win the World Series. Breech
Austinson's home runs, Puncher Schreider, Yeah,
1045
01:09:58.119 --> 01:10:01.720
I thought that place erupted. And
Johann Ross's catch, Yeah, because
1046
01:10:01.840 --> 01:10:06.399
I don't think people realize he was
gonna catch that ball, and then he
1047
01:10:06.520 --> 01:10:12.960
did and the place just went nuts. Everybody. Oh it was loud.
1048
01:10:13.000 --> 01:10:15.159
With Harper hit the home run in
Game five, I'm like it was,
1049
01:10:15.359 --> 01:10:18.960
but I don't think it was like
Hoskins. I think that was the long
1050
01:10:19.119 --> 01:10:23.680
time I always said there were a
lot of long time season ticket holders at
1051
01:10:23.720 --> 01:10:28.039
that game that stood by that team
for a lot of years. When they
1052
01:10:28.119 --> 01:10:32.079
sucked, that got like they're just
moment. Absolutely, Hoskins hit that like
1053
01:10:32.239 --> 01:10:34.920
like it was a war. For
being patient, I tell you we have
1054
01:10:35.039 --> 01:10:39.039
gotten a lot of great moments over
these past few years. For sure,
1055
01:10:39.119 --> 01:10:42.800
we've gotten a lot of great moments. And Jeff, we'll talk about him
1056
01:10:42.800 --> 01:10:45.119
more. We'll talk about even more
great moments. They are going to be
1057
01:10:45.159 --> 01:10:47.439
around the corner, because I'm sure
there will be for sure. Thanks for
1058
01:10:47.560 --> 01:10:50.920
joining us this week, my man. Absolutely, Jeff, pleas for having
1059
01:10:50.960 --> 01:10:55.119
me. It's always so much fun
talking to Jeff. I mean, we
1060
01:10:55.199 --> 01:10:58.720
certainly went off on a tangent a
few different areas there, for sure,
1061
01:10:59.199 --> 01:11:02.079
but he is so pad about his
coverage, not just with the NFL,
1062
01:11:02.479 --> 01:11:06.640
but as it pertains to the Philadelphia
Phillies. I mean, Jeff is an
1063
01:11:06.880 --> 01:11:14.079
avid Philly sports fan through and through, not just a reporter for CBS,
1064
01:11:14.239 --> 01:11:17.600
but man a Philly fan through and
through. Absolutely love having him on the
1065
01:11:17.680 --> 01:11:20.960
show. That's gonna do it for
us. Folks. Hope you have been
