O TYM ODCINKU
A county judge gets removed from the Houston Rodeo, then doubles down with public allegations and a letter that sparks a new political firestorm. We sit down with Harris County Commissioner Tom Ramsey to unpack what happened, why it matters, and how a moment of public behavior turns into a serious question of local leadership and public trust.
We talk about the Houston Rodeo as a pillar of the region, from its volunteer culture to its major economic impact, and why Ramsey believes Harris County owes the organization more than polite praise. He explains his push for a formal apology and a resolution calling for resignation, then walks through what actually happened inside Commissioners Court when the language got tabled, debated, and amended. Along the way, we dig into how quickly accountability debates get diverted into partisan talking points, and why Ramsey argues this is bigger than party labels.
Finally, we zoom out to the leadership standards behind the headlines: showing up for meetings, owning mistakes, and having the temperament to lead when the next emergency hits. If you care about Harris County politics, Houston Rodeo news, local government accountability, and what integrity should look like in public office, this conversation will give you context and clarity.

00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:01.679
Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen.
00:00:01.760 --> 00:00:08.720
I'm your host, Michael Wilson, and you're listening to the Lone Star Conservative brought to you by Textellant AC service on the line, on the air.
00:00:08.880 --> 00:00:12.240
We have with us Tom Ramsey from Harris County Commission Church Court.
00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:13.359
Welcome to the show, Tom.
00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:15.519
Great, good to be here.
00:00:15.599 --> 00:00:15.919
Thank you.
00:00:16.239 --> 00:00:16.640
Absolutely.
00:00:16.719 --> 00:00:21.359
And we have Tom on this morning because we have some pretty wild developments coming out really over the last couple of weeks.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:34.240
Of course, it's all kicked off with Lena Hidalgo's I mean, I I hate to call it a temperate tantrum breakdown at the rodeo when for the first time ever someone tried to tell her, hey, that just doesn't work this evening.
00:00:34.399 --> 00:00:42.719
Um, of course, she was escorted from the premises, uh her her uh directorship was revoked, her ex officio director status was revoked by the rodeo.
00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:48.880
And so I think it was fair uh when people came out and said, hey, maybe there should be some sort of consequence for this.
00:00:49.039 --> 00:01:01.920
Maybe there should be some sort of formal apology, especially in the wake when she put out this massive letter uh where there were these crazy allegations of racism and sexism and possibly illegal manhandling uh that she talked about.
00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:13.439
So I think it was fair when you came out a couple weeks ago and you said, Hey, I think we need to bare minimum put a resolution forth to not only thank the the Houston Rodeo, but to say, hey, we're sorry, and we're calling for her resignation.
00:01:13.760 --> 00:01:17.760
And so that was uh I believe that was tabled during the last meeting.
00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:22.239
Yeah, they were they chose not to deal with it at that point.
00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:26.079
That would have been a perfect time to deal with it because the rodeo was still going on.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:29.680
Everybody was still focused on what's going on out there.
00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:37.439
They had they'd more recently heard the outlandish remarks made by uh made by uh Judge Hildago.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:48.319
So it would have been better if it would have been two weeks ago where we could stand up in a bold and courageous manner, I would say, and say, you know, that's not right.
00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:54.640
You know the sad thing is everybody on commissioner's court has experienced her bad behavior.
00:01:54.799 --> 00:02:03.920
They've seen her, for whatever reason, get triggered and then go off into some really wild, outlandish accusations.
00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:11.360
So you know that this is the only individual that's ever had their credentials revoked.
00:02:11.599 --> 00:02:18.000
Now, the the rodeo is just the greatest PR program we have in the entire region.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:21.680
They're the most respected organization anywhere.
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:47.439
And when they're board of directors, directors, their bipartisan board of directors, the leaders in this community get in a room and say, you know what, we're gonna revoke her credentials because we're an at l outlandish uh accusation, then at that point, we as the county, that's our facility, we owe them an apology for what she said, what she accused of folks up.
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:57.919
So their unfounded accusations and and her entire sense of entitlement that she gets to go to the rodeo, she gets to sit wherever she wants to sit.
00:02:58.159 --> 00:03:02.560
No, when you go to the rodeo, all of us were guests of the rodeo.
00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:05.120
She doesn't she doesn't look at it that way.
00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:09.199
So, you know, I find it ironic they talk about King.
00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:11.520
Well, they ought to be talking about Queen.
00:03:11.680 --> 00:03:22.960
This would be Queen Lena, thinking that she's entitled to go anywhere, anytime, behave any way she wants to, and no one is gonna say anything about it.
00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:24.879
And that's just that's just not right.
00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:26.800
It's absolutely embarrassing.
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:32.159
Right, and it would have been bad enough had it all ended with what literally happened, right?
00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:37.759
If it had all ended the night of the rodeo, that already would have been a massive embarrassment for the county.
00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:40.319
Uh already that your county judge is having to be thrown out.
00:03:40.479 --> 00:03:43.840
I think that already was was uh too many steps too far.
00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:44.639
That alone.
00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:47.919
You throw in that we all know Lena's history, right?
00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:52.719
We all know how she's left for concerts, how she's just not shown up to meetings, the temper tantrums.
00:03:53.039 --> 00:03:59.840
I mean, I'm sure you remember bringing in the kids to try to bully Commissioner's court into passing her early child care program.
00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:01.840
This is a pattern of behavior.
00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:03.360
It's not one mistake.
00:04:03.599 --> 00:04:06.960
And then in the wake of that mistake, there might have even been a little respect gained.
00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:09.520
Had she come out the next morning and said, I'm so sorry.
00:04:09.680 --> 00:04:11.759
Uh I behaved awfully last night.
00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:19.040
I even said on my show, I said, you know, we probably would have all said, wow, what a what a mature response if she changed.
00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:20.800
But of course we didn't get that.
00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:28.240
We got then on top of that those allegations of racism and sexism and manhandling and just berating the rodeo and the rodeo leadership.
00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:31.279
And so they tabled that and said at the next meeting we'll address it.
00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:33.439
And the last meeting I understand was yesterday.
00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:37.680
Can you kind of give us some breakdown as to what happened yesterday?
00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:42.319
So we started with, again, I wanted to honor the rodeo.
00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:44.800
I think that's that's a reasonable thing to do.
00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:49.040
They just completed their most successful uh rodeo on record.
00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:54.319
You know, the total of economic impact of the rodeo in this region, 326 million.
00:04:54.480 --> 00:04:58.399
There's 5,694 jobs supported by it.
00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:05.199
When you look at the number of volunteers that goes out there, it's a it's tens of thousands of people.
00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:19.839
And these are these are everybody from uh uh uh uh folks in the in the in the uh uh back room to the folks in the head office, these these are everybody, this is everybody's rodeo.
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.160
This is this is our celebration of of Houston.
00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:30.160
And to go to that program and and not so we yesterday we celebrated.
00:05:30.319 --> 00:05:36.160
We went through the the data, we went through the details, and they acknowledged, yes, the rodeo is wonderful.
00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:50.240
I said, but you can't celebrate the rodeo on one hand and not apologize for the damage that Judge Hildago did insulting the rodeo the way the way that she did.
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:53.519
But I did not get folks agreeing with me.
00:05:53.680 --> 00:05:54.959
I find it interesting.
00:05:55.199 --> 00:05:59.360
The argument was, well, you know, we should let the voters decide.
00:05:59.519 --> 00:06:04.319
We should we don't have the legal authority to take her out of office.
00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:05.439
We don't.
00:06:05.600 --> 00:06:11.279
All we can do is ask her to do the right thing, and that's all we were doing.
00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:14.560
We were asking Judge Hildago to show a little integrity.
00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:21.360
We're gonna, I'm going to resign, I apologize, I've embarrassed people, we're gonna move on.
00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:28.800
We've got many things to deal with over the next eight months that she's in office, but they chose to make it political.
00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:36.000
I mean, even one of the commissioners brought up Donald Trump and said, well, maybe he needs to resign.
00:06:36.160 --> 00:06:41.360
I didn't know what Donald Trump had to do with rodeo, and this is a classic example.
00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:44.160
They start talking about other things.
00:06:44.399 --> 00:06:50.720
I knew when they brought up Donald Trump that, okay, they're making this political.
00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:52.720
I'm not making it political.
00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:54.959
I'm making it all about the rodeo.
00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:57.839
I'm making it all about doing the right thing.
00:06:58.160 --> 00:06:59.680
Show a little integrity.
00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:01.360
Why don't you resign?
00:07:01.759 --> 00:07:09.600
Because there are some critical things that's going to be happening over the next eight months, and she is not in any position to deal with any of them.
00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:12.240
She hadn't been to the last three meetings.
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:13.839
She wasn't there yesterday.
00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:16.079
I was hoping she would be there.
00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:21.199
And maybe, to your point earlier, maybe she could have said then, I apologize.
00:07:21.360 --> 00:07:22.240
I'm sorry.
00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:28.639
You know, that wouldn't be that wouldn't re rebuild everything, but it would have been something.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:31.439
She's not owned up to any of her remarks.
00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:32.000
Right.
00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:45.759
And that's kind of the thing is maybe even if she had bare minimum, if she had shown up, and this is crazy to me, because of course, you know, regardless of the power or authority of the commissioner's court, for you guys to come out and there be the option, because going into this, everyone thought that maybe it would get passed.
00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:52.319
For there to be a resolution calling for her resignation and for everyone to be aware of it and her not show up knowing that could happen is already insanity.
00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:59.439
But if she had shown up and said, hey, I'm not going to resign, the people duly elected me, but what I will do is say I was wrong, and I apologize.
00:07:59.600 --> 00:08:09.519
Even even weeks later, uh, where we say you should have done this sooner, even then there would have been a level of cordial response among among commissioners to say, Well, thank you for that.
00:08:09.680 --> 00:08:11.439
Like bare minimum, thank you.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:12.480
But none of that.
00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:13.759
She didn't even show up.
00:08:14.160 --> 00:08:22.480
You know, you know, she went uh three nights in a row to the rodeo as the rodeo's guest.
00:08:22.959 --> 00:08:25.920
And she expected to have the best seat in the house.
00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:28.000
It's called, it's kind of on the dirt.
00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:31.279
It's down there by the stage where the concert's going on.
00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:33.840
And those are pretty high-priced tickets.
00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:39.679
She's been down there, she had six tickets three nights in a row down there.
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:45.679
And the fourth night, when she asked to go down there, they said, Sorry, Judge, it's sold out.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:47.519
You can't tonight.
00:08:48.720 --> 00:08:51.840
Into yes, a cussing argument.
00:08:52.480 --> 00:09:00.559
You would not want to listen to the take of cussing that she did to the leadership there at the rodeo.
00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:02.960
She even said, she even said this.
00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:08.080
She said, Well, you know, if I was Ed Emmett, you would let me in.
00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:14.720
I thought the rodeo's response to that was if you were Ed Emmett, you wouldn't be acting.
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:18.240
Yeah, and that's kind of the same thing with Donald Trump.
00:09:18.320 --> 00:09:19.519
They want to bring Donald Trump into it.
00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:21.120
You could just easily say, Yeah, you know what?
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:24.320
If Donald Trump was the Harris County judge, I don't think we'd have this problem.
00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:26.320
Exactly.
00:09:26.559 --> 00:09:27.200
Exactly.
00:09:27.440 --> 00:09:35.120
And so now, of course, you have this this this sort of, they turned it into this sort of partisan battle of Republicans versus Democrats.
00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:36.639
And of course they did that.
00:09:36.720 --> 00:09:38.480
That's not really a surprise to many of us.
00:09:38.639 --> 00:09:45.200
But the result of that now is the the Democrats are acting like, you know, uh Rodney Elsevier, we're successful.
00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:48.080
We thanked James Rodeo, we did our job, we passed our resolution.
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:53.440
It's like, no, you passed an amended resolution that on uh it's both sides of your mouth.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:57.200
On the one hand, you're saying, yeah, we're we're thankful, we thank you for everything you do.
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:04.559
Uh but all the disrespect and disparagement that you suffered as a result of our leadership that we're largely responsible for, that's our county.
00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:06.559
We're not going to say anything about it at all.
00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:08.559
Nothing to nothing to say about it.
00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:11.200
Um and again, it's this sort of pattern of behavior.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:19.679
It's insulting to the rodeo to not even address it, to not even say, they don't even say.
00:10:19.919 --> 00:10:22.799
They they didn't even say, they said, yeah, we celebrate the rodeo.
00:10:23.039 --> 00:10:26.080
Well, what about what about Judge O'Doggle's behavior?
00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:27.679
Wouldn't you call him out on it?
00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:29.759
Why wouldn't you call him out on it?
00:10:30.080 --> 00:10:33.440
But the fact that they wouldn't is their politics.
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:35.039
That is their politics.
00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:39.039
That is clashless, that is no integrity.
00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:46.399
So I I have a real problem with not calling people to account for what they say and how they say it.
00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:57.919
In commissioner's court, she let loose with the worst language you can imagine in front of a 13-year-old girl, right in front of her.
00:10:58.320 --> 00:11:00.960
Now we we passed a resolution then.
00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:03.840
We we we challenged her on that one.
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:06.000
We said you lack decorum.
00:11:06.159 --> 00:11:09.919
So if we would do it there, why wouldn't we do it for the rodeo?
00:11:10.080 --> 00:11:12.000
I it's just it's just mind-numbing.
00:11:12.320 --> 00:11:13.759
Yeah, it's it's it is baffling.
00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:19.919
And I think it again speaks leaps and bounds about our leadership in general and how much of a change that we really need in a lot of these positions.
00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:29.200
Because on top of obviously all the bad policies and taxpayer concerns, you just throw in the blatant lack of decorum and lack of respect uh that that our politics used to be known for, right?
00:11:29.360 --> 00:11:32.480
There's a reason that we're like we wear suits to rise things, we dress nice, right?
00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:50.080
There's a level of class that you're supposed to have in certain places, in certain positions, and on top of all the policies, to throw in the very obvious distaste, uh, just the disrespect, and then to refuse to say anything about it at all is is baffling to me.
00:11:50.159 --> 00:11:51.759
I think it's baffling to it should be to everybody.
00:11:51.840 --> 00:11:53.360
On again, you mentioned not being political.
00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:57.120
It should be baffling to everyone of of every belief and every ideology.
00:11:57.200 --> 00:11:58.159
It should be baffling.
00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:01.120
And I think it needs to go ahead.
00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:03.200
Mark my words.
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:07.120
Uh the problem isn't going to be handled.
00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:10.240
It's if you ignore a problem, it's not going to go away.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:16.320
We will be we will be sitting here in in a few short weeks, and she said something else.
00:12:16.480 --> 00:12:32.639
But worse than that, she could be involved in some leadership role in a disaster that could end up being a disaster because of her lack of judgment, her lack of discernment, her lack of ability to even show up.
00:12:33.279 --> 00:12:36.480
So uh I'll I'll not be quiet.
00:12:36.639 --> 00:12:38.480
I I I have a responsibility.
00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:40.000
It's not comfortable.
00:12:40.240 --> 00:12:55.440
You know, people will accuse me of being partisan and and trying to pick on uh the judge, or I'm not picking on anybody, I just expect everybody to behave in a certain manner, and she is not behaving to anybody's standard at this point.
00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:56.000
Right.
00:12:56.080 --> 00:13:05.679
And to be honest, if you because all of us here in Houston, all the listeners to this show, we know what's kind of going on here with Judge Adalga, we know who she is, and we know the pattern of abuse that we've gone through.
00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:14.480
But if you were to take somebody from outside, uh even from another country, and and just bare minimum show them, hey, this is what happened the night of the rodeo.
00:13:14.639 --> 00:13:18.559
This was her letter formal response with these allegations.
00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:20.240
Here's all of the evidence.
00:13:20.559 --> 00:13:29.360
Do you trust that person to run one of the largest counties in the country, uh known for having possible weather disasters?
00:13:29.519 --> 00:13:30.559
Is that a good idea?
00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:33.039
I don't know that I've ever met a living soul who'd say yes.
00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:37.039
All right, well, here we go.
00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:37.600
Thank you.
00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:39.120
Thank you, Tom, for coming on.
00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:41.039
Thanks for being a part of the show and for keeping us updated.
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:42.320
And thank you, furthermore.
00:13:42.399 --> 00:13:47.519
Uh I know often when you read, you know, the articles and the headlines, you hear the lone Republican on Twitch course.
00:13:47.600 --> 00:13:52.799
That gets uttered all the time because you often find yourself alone on one side of the aisle trying to fight for what's right.
00:13:52.879 --> 00:13:58.960
And so I appreciate uh in the midst of all that, you you displaying that courage and that willingness to continue to speak the truth.
00:13:59.840 --> 00:14:01.039
Okay, thank you very much.
