O TYM ODCINKU
In Episode 60 of the E-commerce Leader Series, Eric Bidinger sits down with Andrea D'Ercole, Founder & MD of Italyabroad.com, the UK-based business he has spent more than two decades building to bring authentic, small-producer Italian wine and food to customers who want to know exactly what they're buying and where it comes from. Andrea launched Italyabroad.com in 2003 — long before off-the-shelf e-commerce existed — coding the site from scratch after leaving Italy and finding he couldn't buy the genuine products he'd grown up with anywhere abroad.
Coming from a winemaking and olive-oil family, Andrea works directly with small producers, tastes and vets every product (quality first, price second), and has taken principled stands from day one, like refusing to stock anything made with palm oil. His pitch is honesty over marketing. He won't chase cheap, and he pushes back on the word "premium" — comparing branded luxury to a Dolce & Gabbana suit you overpay for versus a tailor's equal-or-better version at a third of the price. His products, he says, are the quality without the name.
Trust, in his view, comes from letting the products speak for themselves. He doesn't do the sales pitch; he lets the quality sell, then focuses on delivering flawlessly once someone buys. Most customers discover the brand through tastings, events and restaurants, then search the label online later — with a notably strong US following. And he's blunt about the mistake he sees rivals make: marketing jargon and copy-paste descriptions written by people who don't actually know the products they sell.
Andrea also worries that social media has become a misinformation machine, where follower counts rather than facts define the "new truth." His response is to record myth-busting videos that other honest producers now ask to reuse — building a community organically. On AI he's pragmatic and optimistic: it's a great equaliser for small businesses ("like having ten extra employees"), now baked into every tool he uses, but it needs clear human direction — AI generates, the human validates. He's already seeing more traffic arrive from ChatGPT and Gemini, and he and Eric dig into how LLM-era discovery (GEO) can level the playing field for authentic brands that earn genuine authority.
Behind the scenes, Andrea runs online, wholesale and retail as one brand-amplifying system, and is candid that the hardest part isn't operations but being the lone voice for quality in a tough market. His biggest lesson in 23 years is disarmingly simple: never let good employees go — they pay for themselves and become real assets.
Whether you're building a premium brand without the premium price, selling in a trust-sensitive category, or working out where AI genuinely helps a small business, this episode is full of honest, hard-won insight.
