O TYM ODCINKU
Some people find in their work what other people find in love, and they are not broken. Our culture tells one story about a meaningful life, that you are not whole until you are attached, and for many people that story is true. It was never true for everyone.
I am one of those people. I spent decades believing something was wrong with me, and twenty years in the chair listening to others confess the same thing in a low voice, as if it were a crime. We even have a word for them. Workaholic. We say it like a diagnosis.
For someone whose worth to the people around them has rested on their usefulness, stepping back from the table can be a rational reading of their own data. There is a clean test for whether it is wisdom or hiding. Hiding is a door closing on pain. What I am describing is a door opening onto the thing you were built to do. The real tragedy is the person who feels that pull, chooses obligation out of guilt, gives a hollowed-out version of themselves to the very people they gave it up for, and finds at sixty that the fire has gone cold.
In this episode: the one story our culture tells about a meaningful life; why workaholic is used as an accusation; the difference between a flinch and a fire; the sacrifice that didn't work; the emptiest threat there is, that you'll die alone; the company you keep when you do your work; the question underneath it all, am I lovable if I am not useful; and who this episode is not for.
The episode draws on my book Beyond Attachment. If you want to see which axis your own life really turns on, go to codexofthearchitect.com and sit with the Atlas. It is free, it takes one sitting, and it names the single pattern that has been running underneath your life.
