O TYM ODCINKU
Opening their fourth consecutive week of teaching on Restoring the Family’s Radio Ministry, Pastors Stan and Cynthia Shelby evaluate a character habit that dictates a child’s long-term resilience and destiny: Perseverance and “Grit.”
Reuniting in the broadcast booth, the Shelbys draw on their combined 50-plus years as public school educators and leaders—Pastor Stan with 33 years in elementary classrooms and Cynthia with over 25 years spanning middle school, high school, and elementary administration.
Reflecting on why raw talent and high intelligence fail without tenacity, the Shelbys examine how parents can actively train children to anchor into a task, overcome the paralytic “fear of failure,” and develop the spiritual and emotional stamina required to handle real-world adult responsibilities.
Why Perseverance Matters: Beyond Talent and Intelligence === THE ARCHITECTURE OF HOUSEHOLD PERSEVERANCE ===
PRAISING EFFORT OVER RESULTS ──┐

NORMALIZING MISTAKES & GROWTH ──┘
Perseverance is the refusal to quit when faced with friction, setbacks, or slow progress. In academic, athletic, and spiritual domains, tenacity often yields far greater long-term success than raw natural talent.
=== PARALYZED DEFAULT vs. TRAINED PERSEVERANCE ===
FEAR-OF-FAILURE / QUIT DEFAULT TRAINED KINGDOM PERSEVERANCE
============================== ============================
• Quits to Avoid Making Mistakes • Views Mistakes as Learning Tools
• Demands Perfect Scores / Immediate Ease • Values Process, Effort, and Growth
• Suffers from "Learned Helplessness" • Develops "Grit" and Self-Reliance
• Operates with a Fixed Mindset • Embraces a Growth Mindset
4 Core Benefits of Training Children in PerseveranceCynthia on Developing “Grit”: “Another word I use when teaching children about perseverance is grit,” Cynthia explains. “It is the capacity to anchor into a concept, a problem, or a difficult task and push forward despite discomfort. If we shield our children from every obstacle, we raise adults who freeze the moment life gets hard.”

Tenacity and sustained effort matter significantly more than raw IQ when tackling complex subjects, mastering skills, or completing long-term projects.
2. Fostering a Growth MindsetChildren who understand perseverance view mistakes as normal, necessary tools for learning rather than permanent failures—stopping them from quitting when tasks become difficult.
3. Preventing “Learned Helplessness”Sticking through tough moments proves to children that their personal effort directly alters the outcome—eliminating the helpless mindset that constantly demands adult bails-outs.
4. Preparing Emotional Stamina for AdulthoodPastor Stan on the “Playing Not to Lose” Mindset: “In college baseball, my coach constantly challenged us when we made mistakes: ‘Are you going to let that hold you back, or are you going to use it to get better?'” Pastor Stan shares. “When children develop a fear of failure, they default to quitting so they don’t mess up. They start ‘playing not to lose’ instead of playing to win. We have to teach our kids that making a mistake isn’t the end—it’s just an opportunity to grow.”
Practicing through childhood frustration gives young people the emotional stamina necessary to handle adult employment, financial stress, and relationship dynamics.
4 Practical Ways Parents Can Build PerseveranceComplement your child on how hard they worked and the strategy they used, rather than focusing exclusively on whether they won the game or got an A-grade.
Talk openly about your own mistakes and demonstrate calm, rational problem-solving so your children see that errors are a normal part of human growth.
Help children divide massive projects, study guides, or household chores into small, manageable steps rather than dumping an entire overwhelming task on them at once.
Help children manage their emotions when an outcome isn’t favorable, teaching them to ask: “What did this result teach me, and how will I adjust my approach next time?”
Scripture provides clear, unshakeable narratives illustrating how God uses difficult seasons to forge endurance and victory:
-
Joseph’s Long Journey (Genesis 37–50): Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and falsely imprisoned, Joseph continued trusting God and persevering until God elevated him to save nations from famine.
-
David Waiting on the Promise (1 Samuel 18–24): Anointed as king as a youth, David spent years fleeing for his life from King Saul—learning patience and strength rather than taking matters into his own hands.
-
Nehemiah Rebuilding the Wall (Nehemiah 4–6): Facing fierce enemy opposition, ridicule, and exhaustion, Nehemiah’s crew rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls in 52 days by working with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other.
-
Paul Running the Race (2 Corinthians 11:23–33, 2 Timothy 4:7): Enduring beatings, shipwrecks, and imprisonment, Paul compared the Christian life to a marathon—instructing believers to keep running with their eyes fixed on Jesus.
James 1:12: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
Hebrews 12:1: “…and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
Step Into Your Parenting Assignment TodayGalatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Perseverance is not an accidental personality trait—it is a kingdom discipline forged when parents praise effort, normalize growth through mistakes, and model unshakeable faith.
Evaluate your domestic climate today. Praise your child’s effort over their grade, teach them to break down overwhelming tasks, align your words with God’s Word, and walk in the fullness of your assignment!
