Is monthly giving on your year-end fundraising plan, or is it just one email? In this tough love episode, Dana Snyder shares two quotes from Emma Grede that changed how she thinks about her work: "If everything feels important, you haven't made a decision" and "The work you avoid would probably change your life."
If your nonprofit says it doesn't have time to start a monthly giving program, this episode is for you. Dana shares:
- Why "we don't have time" usually means monthly giving isn't at the top of the list
- Why one monthly giving email at year-end is not enough, and how to build a full season of asks
- How leading with a recurring ask can raise one-time gifts too
- How St. Jude turned a booth at Create and Cultivate into new supporters, and how to build visibility before year-end
- A 3-step challenge: cut one thing this week, choose who owns monthly giving, and block time on your calendar in the next 7 days

00:00:53.799 --> 00:01:02.280
This is one of those spur-of-the-moment Dana recordings where something was just on my mind and wanted to get it out in unedited version.
00:01:03.480 --> 00:01:06.519
And I went to the eye doctor this morning.
00:01:06.680 --> 00:01:11.319
And the reason this is really coming to you is because I had to get my eyes dilated for the first time.
00:01:11.640 --> 00:01:13.799
And I couldn't do any work.
00:01:13.879 --> 00:01:14.680
I couldn't do work.
00:01:14.760 --> 00:01:16.120
I couldn't read emails.
00:01:16.359 --> 00:01:21.879
Couldn't really see people on phone calls that I was having on Zoom earlier today.
00:01:22.039 --> 00:01:26.599
And so I was listening to a podcast episode I've been meaning to finish.
00:01:26.840 --> 00:01:32.280
And it was a podcast episode on the Aspire podcast by Emma Greed.
00:01:32.680 --> 00:01:40.039
She is the CEO and co-founder of Good American and a founding partner of Skims, co-founder of Safely.
00:01:40.439 --> 00:01:47.719
If you are familiar with any of these, these are very popular business ventures with members of the Kardashian family.
00:01:48.359 --> 00:01:50.920
And she's been very successful in fashion for a very long time.
00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:52.759
So Emma Greed, highly recommend.
00:01:52.840 --> 00:01:54.439
I think she's a boss.
00:01:55.079 --> 00:01:57.319
And she said two things.
00:01:57.400 --> 00:01:59.159
She basically, she turned 44.
00:01:59.320 --> 00:02:04.200
And in this birthday episode, she was giving some her 44 like lessons.
00:02:04.760 --> 00:02:07.239
And a couple stood out to me.
00:02:07.320 --> 00:02:14.519
One was if everything feels important, you haven't made a decision.
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:16.759
I was like, oh God, that's good.
00:02:16.840 --> 00:02:18.280
Like that just that one kind of hit me.
00:02:18.360 --> 00:02:24.040
And then the second one was the work you avoid would probably change your life.
00:02:24.360 --> 00:02:24.840
Wow.
00:02:25.079 --> 00:02:25.319
Right.
00:02:25.480 --> 00:02:30.199
Number one, again, if everything feels important, you haven't made a decision.
00:02:30.439 --> 00:02:34.199
And number two, the work you avoid would probably change your life.
00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:36.280
And I kind of feel like these went together.
00:02:36.599 --> 00:02:38.840
And I haven't been stopping about hearing them.
00:02:38.920 --> 00:02:41.719
And they all kind of just a bunch of experiences I've had recently.
00:02:41.800 --> 00:02:45.959
I just felt like I wanted to come on here because this episode is kind of a spinoff of those two lines.
00:02:46.040 --> 00:02:50.439
Because as we step right now into October, it's the final quarter of the year.
00:02:50.680 --> 00:02:56.840
It is fall in Atlanta finally, the start of end of year, the really start of giving season.
00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:58.920
These felt hyper relevant to me.
00:02:59.079 --> 00:03:03.079
So I wanted to have a little tough love conversation today.
00:03:03.319 --> 00:03:08.439
And whether you have started monthly giving it or you are deep in it right now, this one's for you.
00:03:08.519 --> 00:03:11.399
And I'm giving tough love with a lot of love here.
00:03:11.639 --> 00:03:18.439
Um, I want you to really think about last year with me for a second.
00:03:18.600 --> 00:03:22.519
And I want to explain where I was last year, literally around this time in October.
00:03:22.600 --> 00:03:36.839
I was at the Sarkeys Foundation event in Oklahoma, and someone came up to me before I was about to speak saying they had my book, they had read my book, they were so excited about monthly giving, they were integrating it into their work.
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:38.120
And I loved hearing that.
00:03:38.279 --> 00:03:43.319
So I asked her specifically, what are your end of year plans for monthly giving?
00:03:43.560 --> 00:03:46.519
And she paused and she said, you know what?
00:03:46.839 --> 00:03:53.639
We haven't actually embedded monthly giving into our year and asks at all.
00:03:54.199 --> 00:03:58.360
And I'm saying this now because I don't want this moment to hit for you.
00:03:58.839 --> 00:04:06.199
I don't want you to be looking back and come to this realization, woulda, coulda, should have, right?
00:04:06.279 --> 00:04:10.120
Like we still have time to do something about it.
00:04:10.279 --> 00:04:15.160
And I'm saying all of this because I have been in potentially your seat.
00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:21.160
Um, before I started this work, I was a director of development and marketing at a small nonprofit, a team of four.
00:04:21.319 --> 00:04:26.920
I remember sitting at my desk so carefully crafting emails, every word, every subject line.
00:04:27.079 --> 00:04:33.399
I would hit send, and then I would literally stand by waiting to see if donations would pour in, like refresh, refresh, refresh.
00:04:33.560 --> 00:04:36.839
And I'm sure I'm not alone in being the only person to do that.
00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:39.160
And if you've done it too, I understand.
00:04:39.319 --> 00:04:43.399
And what I was doing was I was emailing oftentimes the same group of people.
00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:44.920
I was hoping for the same result.
00:04:45.079 --> 00:04:47.959
I was hoping for a little spike, I was hoping for that one time bump.
00:04:48.040 --> 00:04:52.040
And it would feel really good when we would get those donations for a day or two, right?
00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:57.319
And then some weeks would go by, and then we're doing it all over again, right?
00:04:57.399 --> 00:05:02.279
I'm basically sending, I'm hoping the list is growing a little bit, and then I'm saying it out to the same people.
00:05:02.519 --> 00:05:07.639
Same kind of same type of ask, hoping for another like boop, like spike to come up.
00:05:07.800 --> 00:05:08.519
That was the cycle.
00:05:08.600 --> 00:05:12.199
That was what I was living in before starting all this work in monthly giving.
00:05:12.360 --> 00:05:15.159
Like ask, watch, hope, repeat, right?
00:05:15.479 --> 00:05:22.839
And probably what I was really hoping for was this like magic wand, the one email that would miraculously work.
00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:26.919
And the what I found out is there really is no magic wand.
00:05:27.079 --> 00:05:28.599
There's a decision.
00:05:29.240 --> 00:05:34.759
And that decision is what I want to help you replace that cycle with.
00:05:35.159 --> 00:05:42.839
And the number one reason that I hear that people have not started a monthly giving program, I've heard this over and over and over again, is time.
00:05:43.079 --> 00:05:45.639
Dana, we just don't have the time.
00:05:45.959 --> 00:05:51.800
And today, with so much respect and love, I'm gonna call a little bit BS on that.
00:05:52.120 --> 00:05:54.759
On not just you, but on past me too.
00:05:54.919 --> 00:05:57.319
Not because we're busy, we are, we all are.
00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:00.599
But we choose what we work on.
00:06:01.319 --> 00:06:10.439
I was spending hours on emails and we were working on direct mails, that led to another spike, a one-time spike.
00:06:10.680 --> 00:06:17.079
Instead of ever considering or building something that could create planning and growth and predictability and sustainability.
00:06:17.399 --> 00:06:27.479
So when we say I don't have time, what that often means is this actually isn't at the top of the list.
00:06:27.800 --> 00:06:30.120
And that's totally okay to admit.
00:06:30.199 --> 00:06:33.159
But then we have to be honest about what is at the top of the list.
00:06:33.319 --> 00:06:37.719
What is taking up your time that is keeping us busy?
00:06:38.279 --> 00:06:43.879
And recently someone had told me that, which was so kind to them.
00:06:43.959 --> 00:06:53.800
They're like, if if nonprofits have started growing and launching monthly giving programs over the past few years, it's likely because of your work, Dana, because of what you've put out in your book and the sum and all these things.
00:06:53.879 --> 00:06:56.279
And at first I was very flattered and I was like, thank you.
00:06:56.360 --> 00:06:58.839
And it was very lovely for them to say that.
00:06:58.919 --> 00:07:10.120
But then I thought, well, shoot, I am not doing nearly enough because across our sector, we're not seeing the growth we need to in net new recurring donors, not even close.
00:07:10.279 --> 00:07:12.839
So this tough love is equally for me too.
00:07:13.079 --> 00:07:22.199
There are many, many, many more organizations and the in the sector, I think overall is talking much more about monthly giving, totally.
00:07:22.759 --> 00:07:27.639
But talking about it is not the same as choosing it.
00:07:27.879 --> 00:07:38.120
There is still a massive gap between the organizations I see that lead with a recurring ask and the ones that put up the one-time option first.
00:07:38.599 --> 00:07:45.959
And I think this is what I wish I would have heard over a decade ago now, 15 years ago.
00:07:46.279 --> 00:07:50.199
Giving culture is a choice.
00:07:51.159 --> 00:07:54.519
We have to choose it, and then donors will follow.
00:07:54.599 --> 00:07:56.360
And I've literally seen this proof.
00:07:56.599 --> 00:08:00.919
I've seen organizations that actually make it harder to choose a one-time gift.
00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:06.919
They focus on recurring and shocker, their monthly giving program thrives and grows.
00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:13.560
And I think what also surprises people is when you lead with a recurring first ask, one-time gifts often go up too.
00:08:13.719 --> 00:08:14.039
Why?
00:08:14.199 --> 00:08:15.800
Because your language is different.
00:08:15.959 --> 00:08:19.560
It's bigger, it's invitational, it's transformational.
00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:21.479
You're not asking for a transaction.
00:08:21.560 --> 00:08:24.039
You're asking people to join something.
00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:33.800
And continuously, what's what's been funny is all year I keep hearing like, Dana, you must be killing it, crushing it, like lots of lovely, lovely accolades.
00:08:33.879 --> 00:08:34.919
And I am very grateful.
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:38.360
But the only reason that people are saying that is because I've been so visible.
00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:43.639
I have been going to in-person events and I have been documenting them.
00:08:43.720 --> 00:08:45.480
And that's a very proactive strategy.
00:08:45.560 --> 00:08:49.639
And I want you to think about this in your daily life and what you're going through.
00:08:49.800 --> 00:09:02.600
I think this comes from my American Idol days as a digital producer where we literally documented and saved everything for the show, either for in the moment of recording something or when it was going to air.
00:09:02.840 --> 00:09:08.360
So some things I equally share in the moment, and some things I hold and I save and I share later.
00:09:08.519 --> 00:09:14.279
So I want you to start to ask yourself what can I share in this moment?
00:09:14.680 --> 00:09:19.240
What can I share after at a certain when I know this is going to be perfect to use?
00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:24.680
Because it creates this feeling of being seen everywhere.
00:09:24.840 --> 00:09:29.399
And it keeps me and therefore you, if you do this, top of mind.
00:09:29.799 --> 00:09:34.199
So this is all going to come together, I swear, in my stream of random consciousness here.
00:09:34.360 --> 00:09:39.080
When you're at meetings, at conferences, if you're traveling for something, document the process.
00:09:39.319 --> 00:09:43.799
How do you stay top of mind so that your supporters say, wow, they're everywhere.
00:09:43.960 --> 00:09:46.679
Look at all the work they're doing, like the incredible work they're doing.
00:09:46.759 --> 00:09:50.919
It's about visibility, and that helps get you in front of other new audiences.
00:09:51.080 --> 00:09:53.799
And I want to share an example, an awesome example.
00:09:54.039 --> 00:09:57.319
A couple of weeks ago, I was at Create and Cultivate.
00:09:57.399 --> 00:09:59.879
It is the largest festival for women in business.
00:10:00.120 --> 00:10:04.199
It's basically a women's entrepreneur conference that looks like a music festival.
00:10:04.439 --> 00:10:07.399
There's gorgeous activations, great speakers.
00:10:07.480 --> 00:10:12.439
I was very fortunate to speak on a panel as part of my Zoom Solopreneur 50 opportunity.
00:10:12.600 --> 00:10:17.639
And there was exactly one nonprofit activation at the event.
00:10:17.799 --> 00:10:18.919
I wrote about this on LinkedIn.
00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:19.399
It was St.
00:10:19.559 --> 00:10:20.039
Jude.
00:10:20.120 --> 00:10:21.399
I thought it was so brilliant.
00:10:21.559 --> 00:10:27.799
They had a booth and they gave away these cute little bandanas tied to the story of one of their patients who's also an artist.
00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:32.439
And when they scanned a QR code, they got your email address.
00:10:32.519 --> 00:10:35.559
And then you also, then you received your bandana.
00:10:35.799 --> 00:10:43.319
Now they weren't hoping or expecting donations on site, but donations came because they were there, because of the conversations.
00:10:43.480 --> 00:10:49.240
They built this in-person experience, they grew their visibility with an audience they wanted to reach.
00:10:49.480 --> 00:11:01.799
So the festival brought the audience and the energy, and Saint Jude put themselves right smack dab in the middle of a very viral moment in the female entrepreneur space.
00:11:02.279 --> 00:11:08.919
So, one question for you is where are you building awareness right now, leading up to your end?
00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:15.559
So that when your name pops up in someone's inboxes, supporting you is a clear choice.
00:11:15.720 --> 00:11:18.039
Oh, already heard about them, saw them recently.
00:11:18.120 --> 00:11:19.000
Wow, they're doing so much.
00:11:19.080 --> 00:11:20.279
Let me see what they're up to.
00:11:20.519 --> 00:11:27.080
And then designing for a monthly giving experience becomes a no-brainer.
00:11:27.799 --> 00:11:36.919
So my ask coming, bringing this all together is please don't let this end of year season go by without making monthly giving a core priority.
00:11:37.080 --> 00:11:39.720
I promise you, you will feel so different come January.
00:11:39.960 --> 00:11:44.600
And I do not mean sending one email with a monthly giving ask.
00:11:44.759 --> 00:11:46.279
That's it's not gonna cut it.
00:11:46.439 --> 00:11:49.399
It's not gonna give you the results that you want, your expectations.
00:11:49.639 --> 00:11:56.039
If you send one email and it doesn't work, and then you say, well, it didn't work, that's BS2 calling it.
00:11:56.199 --> 00:11:57.319
Think about how busy you are.
00:11:57.399 --> 00:11:58.759
How many emails do you miss?
00:11:58.919 --> 00:12:01.799
We can't send one email and say we gave it a shot.
00:12:02.039 --> 00:12:07.480
End of year, and this is where like my tough love is pumping out for you because I've seen it work when we put in the effort.
00:12:07.720 --> 00:12:10.439
End of year, donors are paying attention.
00:12:10.679 --> 00:12:15.720
So let's make it a season of monthly giving asks and not just a single send.
00:12:15.879 --> 00:12:22.600
Integrate it into your emails, make sure it's prominent on your donation page, in your stories, in thank yous.
00:12:22.919 --> 00:12:26.439
And if you're like, I'm doing this, Dana, I am focused on monthly giving.
00:12:26.519 --> 00:12:27.559
I've been listening, I got it.
00:12:27.639 --> 00:12:28.439
This is for you too.
00:12:28.600 --> 00:12:34.199
Because I think it's equally our duty as peers to encourage each other to work on this together.
00:12:34.439 --> 00:12:35.240
Encourage us.
00:12:35.319 --> 00:12:40.279
Like, remember the woman at the event I shared with you towards the beginning of this episode, she was so excited.
00:12:40.360 --> 00:12:43.960
She was doing the real work and still end of year somehow is slipping through.
00:12:44.120 --> 00:12:45.159
And it's because we're all busy.
00:12:45.240 --> 00:12:46.759
We have a bazillion things going on.
00:12:46.919 --> 00:12:56.039
So I want to invite you the next time you're in a conversation with another friend in this space, ask them, like, hey, what's your plan for end of year for monthly giving?
00:12:56.279 --> 00:12:58.360
How can we challenge the status quo?
00:12:58.519 --> 00:13:00.199
Have these conversations with each other?
00:13:00.360 --> 00:13:04.679
And maybe you can be the one that prevents that pause from happening.
00:13:04.840 --> 00:13:07.639
This is exactly why I had the sustain our Slack group.
00:13:07.720 --> 00:13:08.840
It's completely free.
00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:11.960
It's a place to share resources, share ideas.
00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:15.559
If you want a peer to bounce off plans, that's where you can go.
00:13:15.799 --> 00:13:19.319
Just head to positiveequation.com and click on resources and you'll see it.
00:13:19.559 --> 00:13:23.879
And then back to time, because this is kind of where all this came from.
00:13:24.199 --> 00:13:25.960
What can someone else do?
00:13:26.360 --> 00:13:28.919
What can you hand off to free up some space for yourself?
00:13:29.080 --> 00:13:32.120
Or what if it's somebody else who focuses on the monthly giving program?
00:13:32.439 --> 00:13:34.039
Because shoot, that could work too.
00:13:34.600 --> 00:13:39.559
It should not, does not all have to land on you, but it should be owned somewhere.
00:13:40.120 --> 00:13:45.319
So my challenge to consider as we're about to start a new month is three things.
00:13:45.639 --> 00:13:50.279
One, what's one thing that can be cut this week?
00:13:50.600 --> 00:13:51.720
Is it busy work?
00:13:51.879 --> 00:13:54.439
What's one thing that we can subtract from our time?
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:57.720
Two, who can own monthly giving?
00:13:58.039 --> 00:13:59.319
If it's not you, who could it be?
00:13:59.480 --> 00:14:04.759
Who can you challenge on your board, on a committee, uh a volunteer, an ambassador?
00:14:04.919 --> 00:14:08.919
Who can help ramp it up just a little bit, just a little bit more than it was before?
00:14:09.159 --> 00:14:19.879
And three, start to put real blocks on your calendar in the next seven days to plan exactly where monthly giving shows up in your end-of-year plan.
00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:21.879
It doesn't need to be perfect.
00:14:22.199 --> 00:14:35.720
Never, never needs to be perfect, but we do need to choose if we're going to make a decision about how we want monthly giving to be integrated internally and then externally, are we calling people into it?
00:14:36.199 --> 00:14:41.159
And I know how hard you're working this season, and I remember working that hard too.
00:14:41.399 --> 00:14:51.000
And I'm just asking you to think about building something differently, to make a different decision this end of year.
00:14:51.240 --> 00:14:53.159
Are we going back to the very beginning?
00:14:53.319 --> 00:14:57.240
The two quotes if everything feels important, you haven't made a decision.
00:14:57.319 --> 00:15:02.439
If everything feels important, we haven't made a decision about what we're actually focused on.
00:15:02.679 --> 00:15:07.319
And the second quote was the work you avoid would probably change your life.
00:15:07.480 --> 00:15:09.559
Are you avoiding monthly giving?
00:15:10.840 --> 00:15:12.679
Could it change your life?
00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:15.879
Could it change the projection of the organization?
00:15:16.439 --> 00:15:17.080
Maybe.
00:15:17.319 --> 00:15:19.879
So can we do some of the work maybe we've been avoiding?
00:15:19.960 --> 00:15:21.559
And then tell me how it went.
00:15:21.799 --> 00:15:26.600
Okay, join us in the free sustainer Slack group, share your plan, ask questions, swap ideas.
00:15:26.759 --> 00:15:35.559
And then if you're ready to really stop standing by, if you're ready to start building a program that brings in supporters every month, if you want to framework, the monthly giving builder is here for you.
00:15:35.799 --> 00:15:39.960
I am announcing on this is for the podcast audience only.
00:15:40.439 --> 00:15:45.240
You can use a code MOVEMETS, like literally all capital movements.
00:15:45.319 --> 00:15:49.080
I'll put it in the show notes for 25% off the annual plan to get started.
00:15:49.240 --> 00:15:50.519
The link will be in the show notes.
00:15:50.679 --> 00:15:57.960
And as a bonus, on October 22nd, I am going to host a live coaching call for all monthly Giving Builder users.
00:15:58.039 --> 00:16:03.720
So if you join now, you can bring your questions, your end-of-year plan, and we will work on it together.
00:16:03.960 --> 00:16:11.559
I just want this to be as we head into this final quarter of the year, for nothing to hold us back, to take the action.
00:16:11.799 --> 00:16:16.360
And again, the work we avoid could probably change our life.
00:16:16.439 --> 00:16:22.519
And I am internalizing these for myself and felt it was worthwhile to share with you in this episode today.
00:16:22.679 --> 00:16:26.439
So I am so excited for what this season is going to bring.
00:16:26.679 --> 00:16:32.600
If in any way we can be supportive in the growth of monthly giving, I am so excited for you.
00:16:32.679 --> 00:16:40.439
And I wish Dana back in 2011, 2012 could be hearing this message to do things a little bit differently.
00:16:40.600 --> 00:16:44.120
So until then, keep building the movement.
00:16:44.519 --> 00:16:54.600
And for our official weekly episodes on Wednesday coming up this week, you're going to meet our final monthlies winner from this year, World Central Kitchen.
00:16:54.679 --> 00:17:01.159
And this episode on Wednesday is how their 80,000 Kitchen Corps members fund day zero disaster response.
00:17:01.240 --> 00:17:02.919
So you're in for a good one.
00:17:03.080 --> 00:17:04.200
I'll see you then.
