Stop Digging: Mastering the Art of Letting Be

WEBVTT
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:09.520
Music.
00:00:09.707 --> 00:00:18.547
Hello it's june 11th and we're reading from the daily stoic just don't make things worse,
00:00:19.707 --> 00:00:22.827
how much more harmful are the consequences of anger
00:00:22.827 --> 00:00:30.007
and grief than the circumstances that arouse them in us marcus aurelius meditations
00:00:30.007 --> 00:00:41.107
11.18.8 the first rule of holes goes the adage is that if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
00:00:41.627 --> 00:00:47.267
This might be the most violated piece of common sense wisdom in the world.
00:00:48.047 --> 00:00:52.927
Because what most of us do when something happens, goes wrong,
00:00:53.087 --> 00:00:56.667
or is inflicted on us is make it worse.
00:00:57.107 --> 00:01:00.767
First by getting angry or feeling aggrieved.
00:01:00.907 --> 00:01:07.787
And next by flailing around before we have much in the way of a plan.
00:01:08.367 --> 00:01:13.107
Today, give yourself the most simple and doable of tasks.
00:01:13.507 --> 00:01:21.387
Just don't make stuff worse. Whatever happens, don't add angry or negative emotions to the equation.
00:01:21.847 --> 00:01:24.827
Don't react for the sake of reacting.
00:01:25.487 --> 00:01:30.147
Leave it as it is. Stop digging. then plan your way out,
00:01:32.267 --> 00:01:32.907
this.
00:01:35.947 --> 00:01:45.067
Is one of the reasons why I like reading this a little later in the evening because,
00:01:47.527 --> 00:01:52.967
usually something that's happened throughout the day it has an answer for it,
00:01:55.807 --> 00:02:08.347
and in this instance I was just talking to someone about grief and how grief changed my life.
00:02:10.058 --> 00:02:18.198
Relationship with food. And as I was going through grief, it caused me to overeat.
00:02:20.578 --> 00:02:27.938
And it led me into being obese. It led me into having a lot of visceral fat.
00:02:30.758 --> 00:02:35.158
And I got a wake-up call in December of last year.
00:02:36.338 --> 00:02:38.978
And I've been on a path to change it.
00:02:41.218 --> 00:02:45.838
And it's working, you know, losing weight, being more active.
00:02:46.638 --> 00:02:52.798
But it's a perfect example of how we just make stuff worse.
00:02:53.498 --> 00:02:58.238
Because instead of just taking a second, grounding ourselves.
00:03:01.558 --> 00:03:03.198
Taking a deep breath,
00:03:05.318 --> 00:03:12.018
and, you know, approaching the situation with a better eye.
00:03:12.298 --> 00:03:14.458
I know they said common sense wisdom.
00:03:16.278 --> 00:03:20.578
I've always been under the belief that common sense is not a common thing.
00:03:20.698 --> 00:03:23.198
If it was, everybody would use it.
00:03:28.378 --> 00:03:33.998
But having some practices in place, whatever that may be,
00:03:34.398 --> 00:03:46.278
having a good community that will keep you motivated, uplifted, and support you.
00:03:46.278 --> 00:03:54.118
And if you have a partner that would be nice too because relationships ebbs
00:03:54.118 --> 00:04:01.258
and flow and having somebody there that understands and recognizes what's going on,
00:04:02.038 --> 00:04:04.918
and can support you that's nice too,
00:04:06.598 --> 00:04:14.178
but just like they said if it's bad just stop digging take a deep breath and.
00:04:15.600 --> 00:04:24.009
Music.
