Well hello dazzled prong as I like to say of the inspired mind audience please give a warm welcome to Mr Drew fortune Drew fortune say hello to the inspired minds audience.
00:14.23
Drew Fortune
Hello people of earth actually that's a catchphrase of ah how did this get made off I'll think of one later hey Jeff thanks for having me what's ah.
00:19.22
jeffwatson
Who's you I'll just edit I don't edit I don't edit anything by the way. So just f why I I'm really excited to get you on obviously Drew and I have been talking ladies and gentlemen for a bit before this interview and I can already tell that we're kindred spirits. Lot of touch points I want to get to but the first question that is you may or may not know my friend that I always ask everybody is that when you were young. What was the first thing that inspired you when you were a child was it a song or a book or an inflection point or whatever that was come.
00:53.15
Drew Fortune
Um, I don't even really need to think about that jaws watching the movie jaws on um, a vhs that we taped off of Abc I remember um, that's the first time I remember um, losing myself. Into entertainment. Um, it wasn't an album. It wasn't a tv show I mean sesame street sure I remember watching that but I you know my parents would tell me I would just sit in front of our Tv and just watch jaws silently by myself cross-legged I'm an only child. Um. So yeah, oh it was jaws and even back then I remember thinking. Um, there's something more to this. This is artistry. Ah, even at that age it just you know the feeling of being um, going down the rabbit hole so to speak when you're reading a book.
01:39.40
jeffwatson
Huh.
01:48.43
jeffwatson
Great.
01:48.69
Drew Fortune
When you're just totally lost in that world. That's the first time I remember that and it led to ah well kind of off topic. My lifelong love of fishing. Um, but I yeah I remember jaws was this seminal movie.
01:56.50
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, ah.
02:04.60
Drew Fortune
Wasn't star wars what I was big in Indiana Jones but that even took a backseat Brody um was my hero ah Roy Scheider ah I just I even had a jacket that we called my brody jacket when I was 5 Um.
02:10.20
jeffwatson
Yeah.
02:16.55
jeffwatson
Here. Yeah, yeah.
02:21.95
Drew Fortune
It's like just a tang jacket. He's wearing around town when he's going to get the peat brushes I mean that's how into it I was at such an early age. So yeah, that was that was really my starting point.
02:33.12
jeffwatson
How utterly fascinating that a 5 year old would be not only drawn into a pretty goddamn scary movie for back then ah not only would a 5 year old watch that and just because really be um, captivd by it. But what's fascinating to me is that whole idea of getting into a movie. Can you tell me a bit. Ah, bit more about that like pouring yourself into art. Maybe just.
02:55.17
Drew Fortune
Sure, um, hey Jeff your your volume just kind of went ah way low. Ah.
02:56.51
jeffwatson
Oh Can you hear me now. Oh wait I know what happened hang on hang on good. This any better is is that any better there. We go sorry about that. Okay, well obviously'll cut this out. So but let me ask the question.
03:09.61
Drew Fortune
Check! Oh yeah, there you go. That's way better. Yes, um, yeah, so yeah, okay, yeah, sorry well kind of losing Mark yeah, losing myself into art.
03:22.89
jeffwatson
Wow! yeah.
03:25.38
Drew Fortune
As it were um and I remember and jaws really started everything being an only child. Um you know what I had friends Obviously um I wasn't ah.
03:41.59
Drew Fortune
You know I wasn't like I was a small kid so I wasn't an athlete or anything growing up in Omat Nebraska um you know art wasn't I'm not trying to get too sidetrack but art wasn't necessarily appreciated or celebrated so much. Um, you know I was expected to just love cornhusker football and ah.
03:44.43
jeffwatson
Ah, for.
03:52.53
jeffwatson
Are. Right.
04:01.47
Drew Fortune
Play Sports you know, but that never just never did it for me. Um, so when I escaped into play by myself. Um, it was always movies. Um, you know I would play jaws in my backyard somehow I would create the fantasy that I was on the orca.
04:15.18
jeffwatson
Um, when.
04:20.84
Drew Fortune
You know in the middle of the ocean battling jaws in an Omaha Nebraska field. You know, um I mean talk about the power of movies for just to do something like that to me. Um, you know, even at that age I knew I was a junkie for movies. Um, and then it was die hard.
04:23.14
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
04:33.93
jeffwatson
Now.
04:39.22
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah, yeah, that was that's when our rated movies came in and I'm like oh God here we go give me more um but what I want to get to kind of losing myself in movies. Um, first was yeah, it was Jaws Diehard I actually broke my um.
04:43.90
jeffwatson
Um, ah run.
04:57.75
Drew Fortune
My arm playing cliffhanger ah in my in my tree house the sylvester a law movie. Um, so yeah I took it pretty far in my in my fantasies. Um, but what I wanted to get to was ah I used to make movies all the time in my basement and they were always.
05:01.78
jeffwatson
Um, um.
05:06.33
jeffwatson
Um, apparently fairly done.
05:17.73
Drew Fortune
Her horror movies like very horrific violent things. Um and my dad would always and I would always get my cousin Danny to play it. You know, kind of be my ah my star. Ah and you know nothing was scripted. It was a loose idea. Um. Tales from the crypt. It was mostly inspired by tales from the crypt to the Hbo series. Um, yeah, so we did one I remember called heartbait ah, we saw that was clever because it was a playoff of heartbeat and a guy rips out a dude's heart on a boat and uses it for bait.
05:37.45
jeffwatson
Um, ah yep.
05:53.34
jeffwatson
Okay, how was it.
05:54.85
Drew Fortune
I mean that's as far as we got basically um yeah, but yeah, that's that's where um, all that started and again I was reading really at an early age Stephen King heavily um I remember teachers you know when we have reading time in fifth grader.
06:06.12
jeffwatson
Men.
06:14.19
Drew Fortune
Maybe even sixth grade. You know I think I got in trouble they would say you know Drew's reading misery like did you give this book to him and my parents be like yes, um, not like I was acting out or anything but um, that's kind of heavy material when everyone else is reading goosebumps and I'm reading about.
06:19.40
jeffwatson
Right. Forgot.
06:33.50
Drew Fortune
You know a guy getting his leg amputated and caught aroused with a blow towards you know.
06:33.46
jeffwatson
Right? right? Yeah, Salem's Not not the kind of thing that kids really you read that time here.
06:42.83
Drew Fortune
Yeah, right? Yeah I did the Tommy knockers I remember that was like 747 pages and I felt like such a badass when I finished it like yup. Yeah, oh yeah, no.
06:48.96
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, that guy writes like a maniac never stops. But I love this story though? Oh go ahead. Please.
07:01.43
Drew Fortune
Oh no, that's that's that's pretty much you know the ah the early years of Drew fortune right? there.
07:07.26
jeffwatson
Right? And ah you know every time I ask this question is I love this question so much because it does provide a through line most of the time especially for creatives right? like I know my inflection point I was six by the way I knew exactly where I was it was a particular song Boston of all weird things.
07:18.49
Drew Fortune
Um.
07:24.22
jeffwatson
And that was it Boom I'm in right and it paired me through this. Yeah yeah, and it carried me through this time this through line of my life which has been completely devoted to music and now perhaps helping people when perhaps both and at at any rate.
07:29.10
Drew Fortune
Um, so music musical here. Yeah.
07:36.46
Drew Fortune
Are. Right.
07:42.72
jeffwatson
That Throughline is so important. So then I guess can you maybe just tell me just kind of briefly then I would guess how that influenced where you are now.
07:52.94
Drew Fortune
Sure, um, what I really should have done looking back? Um, you know I'm 40 Ah, one of my great regrets is not going to film school and pursuing that in earnest. Um.
08:08.71
Drew Fortune
You know it's um, again part of that midwest thing like in high school I regret that there was a guy Um, who was who was making he was a year older but he was making these really cool. You know obviously independent ah movies. Basically around our our our town and I remember he gave me a vhs sort of supercut of his stuff. Um, but you know it was part of that thing where I wasn't confident enough in high school to just be like let me work with you. Dude.
08:34.81
jeffwatson
Are.
08:40.93
Drew Fortune
Like I like what you're doing and it's way more interesting to me than you know lacrosse or whatever was going on in Barrrington Illinois in the late 90 s um so yeah, but I went to depaul university I ended up at de paul and that's where I um.
08:50.54
jeffwatson
Um, from ah.
09:00.37
Drew Fortune
That's why I graduated and you know there were a lot of kids at Columbia a lot of my friends were making short films actually doing the the film program thing. Um, but I didn't do that. Ah, you know I didn't really do much in college. Ah, that I again I wish I had done a million different things I could have been writing for the school paper I never did that. Um, so writing for me ah really came um through an internship I did with Rob Elder who was a Chicago suntimes um staffer and ah.
09:35.00
jeffwatson
Um.
09:36.86
Drew Fortune
He wrote about Movies. He was a critic. Um, so I was I helped him I did an internship with him worked on a few books of his and that's what got me into writing um I had never done anything besides short story stuff that um. The only thing I did well in school with or the only natural talent I feel like I really had was writing um and that goes back to when I was a kid on road trips I would write um little short stories in the car and they're all based loosely based off who you I'm sorry.
10:00.70
jeffwatson
Um, well.
10:05.66
jeffwatson
Would you really? I Just said that's incredible. We'll go ahead I Love that story already.
10:15.34
Drew Fortune
Yeah, but the thing is and it was so lame that I did this I would just rip off movies and rewrite them essentially. Ah like I remember um I wrote a ah thing called dead end when I was 11 and it was just the movie judgment night with Emilio Estevez
10:30.44
jeffwatson
If his dad's was right? yeah.
10:33.53
Drew Fortune
Essentially and like I was proud of it because my parents had never seen that movie like oh look I'm creative you are fuck. No I just ripped off judgment night for some reason. Um.
10:38.82
jeffwatson
Yeah, by the way I'm I'm so sorry kind I interrupt for 1 heartbeat because I have to to say this out loud and I just popped in my head. It's I'm weird theilo e to his line in that movie where he goes are yeah I'm gonna go see my parent or my family tonight know nothing am i.
10:46.10
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah.
10:54.46
Drew Fortune
But yeah I will get on to them tonight something like that and Cuba's overacting in every single fraian. Um, yep, so um, anyway I guess how my writing thing started. Um.
10:58.36
jeffwatson
Right? Go reach out. Um, go ahead.
11:11.92
Drew Fortune
You know I graduated I always wanted to be a screenwriter but I never knew I never took steps to really pursue Thatquentin Tarantino you know I was 12 when pulp fiction came out. Ah, ah, here's a little side note on my obsession with movies. Um, so pulp fiction came out.
11:23.15
jeffwatson
Um, no.
11:30.93
Drew Fortune
I still remember I thinking it was like October of 94 and I wasn't allowed to see it. It was like a hard. No and my dad would take me to numerous rrated films. Um, he never liked horror but we did a lot of like John Cloude Van Dam because I was really into that and we could agree on action most of the time.
11:42.77
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
11:49.90
Drew Fortune
But I remember he saw Pulp fiction before me by himself and he came home and I still remember he said no, it's not for you. It's an it's an adult movie and that just intrigued me more I'm like what does this mystery box of adult.
11:57.44
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
12:04.30
Drew Fortune
Have to offer a young you know, budding screenwriter or want tobe screenwriter. Um, so anyway, they they left for a weekend and I had a babysitter and I remember I told them I was going to my friend Marty Peters and I rode my bike ah eight miles to Indian Hills Movie Movie Theater Ah paid for I don't know the Brady bunch movie or something else that was out around that time and then snuck in and got pulled fiction. Ah yeah, and that was oh man that was just so cool and anything that was taboo or and I was told I couldn't do it.
12:26.80
jeffwatson
Um, and right.
12:37.96
jeffwatson
Um, sure.
12:41.91
Drew Fortune
My god I wanted to see it somewhat more I remember here's another little scam I pulled same here in 94 um naturalborn killers was out and you know I was aware of the controversy and um so I pulled the switcheroo and blockbuster where i.
12:59.83
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, yeah.
12:59.93
Drew Fortune
Remember the the old Vhs cases used to have that movies actually in them. Ah I exchanged that with a different movie so I rented naturaltborn killers in the mighty ducks Vhs case. And yeah I got busted big time for that because I left it in the vcr. My dad goes oh so how is mighty ducks.
13:10.35
jeffwatson
Ah.
13:16.25
jeffwatson
Um.
13:18.80
Drew Fortune
And then he like he set it up like an elaborate sting operation. You know so I'm like oh it's good I loved it. Another emilio es movie I guess I'm really into him then he pulls out the BHs in front of my face and like that shit that's it. Yeah, oh.
13:26.35
jeffwatson
Ah, right.
13:29.71
jeffwatson
Here we go. We're done set up on the kid the handcuffs and we're off so here's the thing there's there's like 4 subjects that I want to hit with you and so okay, so we're going to start this round this is lightning round right? I'm going to talk I'm going to throw out 3 different bands.
13:37.60
Drew Fortune
Was threatened. Yeah. Um, yeah.
13:48.17
jeffwatson
You are going to do a minute on it I'll do it in and on it and then we're going to move on to the second and third dale replacements. Go.
13:53.33
Drew Fortune
And sure got got you.
14:01.30
Drew Fortune
Paul Westerberg is my hero. Um, he could do no wrong I got into them late in life. Um, and I actually started through Paul Westerberg Solo which I feel is completely underrated. Um.
14:10.86
jeffwatson
Um.
14:16.11
Drew Fortune
But anyway you know it's midwest on we and drunken dreamers and beautiful losers and I fell right into that in my early 20 s um I actually got the last interview with Paul Westerberg for Spin Magazine I drove out to Minnesota and met him at his house and spent an afternoon at Paul's hell at Paul's house with just the 2 of us.
14:29.73
jeffwatson
Um I want come.
14:35.45
Drew Fortune
Um, and it's still my favorite piece of writing and one of the most amazing days of my life.
14:41.21
jeffwatson
I cannot be surprised by any of that I'm a giant replacements fan myself as well and I actually knew the guy forgot about this until I was thinking about it I used to know Peter Japerson he was their a and r guy and best friend and manager in the whole deal. Um and actually met I forgot about this.
14:47.33
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah.
14:55.98
Drew Fortune
Um, very yeah.
14:58.85
jeffwatson
And met Tommy a couple of times as he was living with a friend of mine before he made he was where telemarketer for a while was like really like oh my god but then he made all that money with guns and rolls. Sorry yeah I am yep yep yep, which.
15:08.53
Drew Fortune
Um, me was oh really? Well oh so when he was doing like mass and pop stuff like he was doing tele marketing to pay the bills Huh interesting. Never knew that oh my god.
15:17.83
jeffwatson
Can you imagine that accent and we got of the out of the phone or telemarket re yeah hey I don on like anyway. So but replacements have been a massive influence of me too I heard kissing on the bus and I was like what.
15:24.85
Drew Fortune
Hearing Tommy call you yeah right.
15:34.87
jeffwatson
And I love their whole shambolic thing and playing on Snl and completely wasted by the way. Do you know who got them drunk that night you certainly do because you're a fan. Okay, next ah super chunk super chunk. Go.
15:43.42
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah Harry Dean sin ah superchunk is my happy music. Um, again, it was kind of a late in life thing for me. Ah. I discovered them around when I was 19 through my cousin will brownley. Um, and oh you know how I and I got into them was shallow end on the jerky boy soundtrack shit garbage awful movie. Great soundtrack. Ah.
16:10.87
jeffwatson
Um, jerk him I know I am.
16:17.20
Drew Fortune
So yeah, it was shallow and like a b side of theirs and I just loved it. It was so it wasn't punk but it was close enough. Um not that I'm a big punk guy. But anyway I just I just fell in love with everything I have such a sweet spot for um, power pop 90 s um.
16:34.19
jeffwatson
Um, ah.
16:35.70
Drew Fortune
I think that they kind of flow in that vein. Um, but yeah you know I I came to love Max voice and max max songwriting. And yeah I still listen them daily. That's the best way to put it after all these years you know.
16:46.27
jeffwatson
I okay, my quick turn around here. Um I'm in love with Laura Balance been for a very long time the base there. Yeah baseally ladies and gentlemen I'm Gen x like I'm so Gen x like writing that speed spot pavement back.
16:56.86
Drew Fortune
Um, why who isn't.
17:00.73
Drew Fortune
You can.
17:02.54
jeffwatson
Ah, but anyway so like slack motherfucker was kind of like the Anthem for a lot of us of worst. Yeah, great song and then the other thing I was going to say was about superununk I I forgot great band Finally wean.
17:07.10
Drew Fortune
Sure.
17:22.17
jeffwatson
By all means.
17:22.68
Drew Fortune
Oh can I go back to superchunk real quick I think um yeah I think come pick me up is their greatest record and a lot of people differ with me on that they like the early stuff I'm like I don't know man come pick me up is.
17:34.50
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
17:38.10
Drew Fortune
Just the fruition of all their strengths coming together I feel but that's me.
17:41.18
jeffwatson
Um I look in conversation about Mac Mclalan who I'm good with um so how is it back but gone.
17:48.37
Drew Fortune
Um, mac mcone I it took me forever to learn how to pronounce it Mac Mc gone I think yep.
17:55.99
jeffwatson
Interesting. You know this could be the very first and last time on a podcast that anyone's had this conversation specifically before just I wanted out at any rate me like obviously.
18:05.70
Drew Fortune
Sure learning how to pronounce Max name. Um all right? So are we on mean this is all been building towards ween basically right? Okay, um I might go along on this.
18:14.98
jeffwatson
Obviously.
18:21.93
Drew Fortune
But ah I'm trying to we encapsulated everything I had ever loved about music. Um I loved genre hopping um like back and flaming lips and.
18:37.20
jeffwatson
Um, well.
18:38.44
Drew Fortune
A lot of that early 90 s alt stuff that was really experimental but still accessible. Um chocolate and cheese basically was all of that combined. Um, and once you go down that rabbit hole. It's kind of like the replacements are Paul Westerberg the fans are so hardcore.
18:45.47
jeffwatson
Who.
18:57.45
Drew Fortune
And it's it's difficult to explain what it is why this band almost becomes like a religion and I could walk down the street and see someone with ah a ween bootna shirt and we will immediately almost be friends like I would feel comfortable enough to invite that person to like a house party or something.
19:08.70
jeffwatson
Um, right.
19:16.74
Drew Fortune
Um, and boy my love goes so deep I got a boognish tattoo ah in my early 20 s um and once I I formed a really good um friendship with ah Mickey Dean Ween um
19:31.23
jeffwatson
Um, no.
19:35.88
Drew Fortune
As I mentioned I'm a big fisherman my whole life and Dean became ah a charter captain. Um off the jersey shore ah, a licensed captain and ah but I pitched a story on just going fishing with him and kind of catching up that was you know after wean had broken up so was in that. Um.
19:41.76
jeffwatson
Um, wow.
19:55.27
Drew Fortune
Interim essentially um so yeah, he was just doing a lot of fishing and we went out and caught some big striped bass and and then that's kind of how our friendship started and um, my dad and I went fishing with him in q west he took his boat down to key west 2 year
19:55.86
jeffwatson
Um.
20:14.16
Drew Fortune
And we brought a £200 hammerhead shark to the boat. But um, yeah, and then we cut him loose but that was that was the big catch of the day. Um, but anyway all that goes to say um I've never done this officially but I think I've interviewed dean wean the most of any journalist ever.
20:29.49
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
20:33.40
Drew Fortune
Um, I think we're at a we're we're at around 8 or 9 or 10 interviews at this point. Um, so yeah, we we kind of got it down. Um, where I think he really ended up trusting me more than anyone. Um, so anyway, that's that's my ween.
20:36.90
jeffwatson
Um, wow.
20:50.86
jeffwatson
Yeah, you know and actually there's just I was thinking about this when you said that about the trust thing. Um, that's so in my world. My new world at least as a therapist I found something out. It was really interesting when I first started this gig which wasn't that long ago and that is the therapeutic alliance.
20:51.78
Drew Fortune
Thing.
20:59.63
Drew Fortune
Is he.
21:06.14
jeffwatson
Which is basically do you like your therapist enough to trust them with your darkest secrets. Can you build that trust that trust is actually 7 times higher power for the client at any modality any intervention anything I can say basically it's true. Yeah, absolutely because think about it.
21:10.76
Drew Fortune
A.
21:21.44
Drew Fortune
Um, real.
21:24.83
jeffwatson
I can sit there and say well one you could do a gratitude list or why don't you and I do all these things you little tiny little things right? But if you don't this person doesn't like me then they're not going to trust me what's the point of having a therapist right? So it's that what I'm talking.
21:38.65
Drew Fortune
Um, work Yeah have you.
21:41.82
jeffwatson
It's that way of locking in with somebody. It's that way of understanding you can do interviews with that guy forever and track his life.
21:50.89
Drew Fortune
Yeah, um, has there been anyone. You haven't been able to break essentially or crack Oh break are those are bad terms but you know what I mean someone who had a a shield up and you weren't able to break through it.
21:59.42
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, um, it's not as it's It's not as simple as that and perhaps um, you know there are people that you connect with more you and I is a fantastic example I know you and I'll be friends for a very long time others you know.
22:07.93
Drew Fortune
The name.
22:16.57
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah I agree.
22:16.95
jeffwatson
It's like dating to a certain degree right? So comes into my office. It's a first date thing too because it is kind of fun I don't know who's coming into the room on the first date essentially so there's that feeling of like what's going to happen next.
22:27.27
Drew Fortune
Right.
22:31.99
jeffwatson
But if you connect with that person. That's how it works right? and then you can maybe not break through or do anything but you can just shine a different perspective on um on what they're going through that they may not necessarily see and then you do it right? I give them sorry I don't give them their wings I showed them the wings that are already on their back before they even walked into my office right.
22:49.76
Drew Fortune
ME.
22:51.23
jeffwatson
So all I'm simply saying is this. It went a little far but this whole Dean Ween thing makes perfect sense because you guys obviously had built an enormous amount of. Trust.
23:03.90
Drew Fortune
Yeah, yeah I think so um I pitched a ween book I haven't mickey wants to write it himself. But I would love I would still love to do that. Some point.
23:11.84
jeffwatson
I cannot blame you but again I could do um I could do seriously and I know that you could too. Actually you do about 10 episodes just on this alone but we're going to move on and because I want to move on I really want to go into beast mode I would like to speak about beast mode first of all and then you can fill in the blanks I'm sure there will be a lot. I'm a giant horror guy. So I'm a gore guy right? when I was a kid with Fangoria that was it and to this day I still, we'll go on Youtube because I interviewed the guy from final destination a little while ago the writer so I did all this gore looking up and like god and it was energized and I felt like a kid again.
23:32.87
Drew Fortune
Nice. Yep I know.
23:43.20
Drew Fortune
He.

jeffwatson
So I love the Metta First of all the fact that and I wrote this down actually too because I'm it's such a great line from Ray Wise ladies and gentlemen from Twin Peaks and many other films. He says this line is so good I got to find it airing on. Um, oh no I have it here somewhere in my notes.
23:50.57
Drew Fortune
Ah.
24:06.74
Drew Fortune
Um, Green is a monster is that okay.
24:07.32
jeffwatson
Ah, yeah here we go I got it I got it. Celebrity is a mask you can't take it off.
24:19.73
jeffwatson
Um, great work. Great work. Just tell me about the movie. It's a meta horror movie and it's so fucking Good Please go on.
24:19.89
Drew Fortune
Yep yeah I remember when we wrote that? yeah.
24:29.16
Drew Fortune
Okay, beast mode are well my weird little mutant baby that my friend Spain Willingham and I came up with he was an old french from Chicago he was one of those guys who was at Columbia doing the film school stuff when I was in Chicago as well.
24:43.33
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
24:48.90
Drew Fortune
Um, so yeah, we bonded over ah a lot of Schlockcky eighty s horror trauma films um trauma films trauma Schlockcky movies. They're not films Anyway I Love trauma. Um, but yeah, you know the gory of the better we were. We were pretty hardcore gorahounds I.
24:54.10
jeffwatson
Um, yep, yep.
25:06.61
Drew Fortune
I took that a bit further than Spain. Um, but ah yeah, you know horror comedies Frank Hennan lotter basket case. Um a lot of that really obscure. Um, mostly eighty s stuff um is kind of what what we wanted to tap into with beast mode. Um.
25:11.40
jeffwatson
Um, yep.
25:17.44
jeffwatson
On on.
25:25.27
Drew Fortune
So I was in l a he ended up moving there from San Francisco and I remember one day I was at his house and we were kicking around some ideas about a project and we didn't have ideas but he said okay I just wrote this page about. Um, a Hollywood agent who accidentally runs over his only client and that's it. Um, so that's yeah, yeah, that's how it that's how it started and then it just expanded into this weird.
25:45.57
jeffwatson
I.
25:57.68
Drew Fortune
Thing where ah, there's a I mean the plot sounds so silly, but there's in central America we never say where ah, there's a very there's a healing flower that if you're if you're pure of heart. Um or a good person. It will heal. Whatever physically ails you. Ah, if you're a bad guy. Ah, it'll turn you into a beast or a monster. Um, so that that flower makes its way to hollywood and um, that's where our story really kicks off. Um. But this whole journey. Um, you know again all I wanted to ever really wanted to do was write a movie in some form somehow. Ah so you know there was a lot of perseverance because getting a movie made sucks. Even ah, you know a low buzzy horror thing.
26:46.31
jeffwatson
Mother Yeah, sure.
26:52.56
Drew Fortune
Um, but we can a shop for the stars. Um, our co-director we brought in a co-director Spain co-directed it with this guy Chris Freeman um who brought in Ray wise and see Thomas Howell who plays our our lead. Um James Duvall from
27:05.43
jeffwatson
Um, well yeah.
27:11.00
Drew Fortune
Greg a rocky movies like the dune generation. He's also an independence day in the movie. Go um and I loved yeah I always loved these guys. So the really trippy part of it was when we sat down to do a table read and you hear these guys reading the dialogue we wrote stoned out of our gourds at like. At midnight you know and then there they're taking it seriously it was so cool. Um, but the process was very long and arduous. Um, you know we wrote it. Ah.
27:31.27
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, are run.
27:45.90
Drew Fortune
Numerous rewrites blah blah blah I think we shot about 65% of the movie in 20 so in 2016 and then funding dropped out and we it was just sort of this thing where we had more than half the movie shot. But. Wasn't finished. Um so that was I got accredit Spain um for really hustling and raising the money to finish it. Ah you know I think we came in around like well I don't want to say budgets I don't know exactly. Um.
28:05.70
jeffwatson
Um, right.
28:20.81
Drew Fortune
But I think it's fun. You know and it was I mean it was my first time writing something I actually just finished another screenplay. Um, but ah yeah, you know there were things that we had to um.
28:37.58
Drew Fortune
That we couldn't do I mean it was We originally wrote it as the goous thing we could come up with and then we get to set and it's like oh shit practical effects are very expensive and time consuming. Um, so yeah to cut back on that stuff and then it became more of a comedy. Ah, but in the end you know it got reviewed.
28:45.29
jeffwatson
Right.
28:56.19
jeffwatson
Are.
28:56.19
Drew Fortune
Pretty well like not by friends. You know, just like actual reviews being like yeah they you know it's a B minus they gave it a shot I'm like fuck. Yeah, right? That's that's all we could really ask for So I mean it was a blast I Still think it's a hoot to watch and um.
29:04.49
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, sure. Yeah, oh it's just it's fantastic and again, it's like it just it's complete I'm I'm your demo. Let me just put it that way because I was watching this I'm like oh my god this is like Roger Corman
29:20.64
Drew Fortune
Um I can't believe you watched it Oh my god.
29:21.89
jeffwatson
Kind of stuff. It is so good and like it's a really dumb Meta movie which is not the mean you heard of that often right? because it's little offense but I say dumb but I know know you exactly what I'm saying and.
29:33.84
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah, sure. Yeah, totally yeah.
29:37.90
jeffwatson
It. It's just in which fine and it's magical and it gory so ladies and gentlemen of the inspired mind audience Bees Mode Vod find it anywhere you can ah your closest streaming outlet and get on it because I've got to move on to some more topics. How about that buddy.
29:55.71
Drew Fortune
Yeah, hey I appreciate that plug I interviewed Roger Corman a couple years ago I mean god he was ninety I think when we spoke yeah very sweet guy very sharp as it sharp as attack I was gonna say but that's ah, who says that anymore. But yeah, how he was he was just.
29:58.36
jeffwatson
Um, he really moves. Yeah, what was he like? ah.
30:09.30
jeffwatson
Um, now what was this place. What was this place like.
30:13.10
Drew Fortune
On it and yeah, very cool guy. Huge inspiration. Oh that was it was a phoner. Yeah, so.
30:20.66
jeffwatson
Um, ah I just imagine like big boobs are everywhere and it the old thing. Um, okay so moving on and so I got to get to the this ladies and gentlemen speaking the plug is this guy is this book called no encore.
30:28.59
Drew Fortune
Um, right exactly.
30:36.57
jeffwatson
Musicians reveal their weirdest wildest and most embarrassing gigs and as a road warrior myself to get into it a second Drew ladies and gentlemen this is perfect. It is an incredible distillation. It's an incredible snapshot of what it's like to be on tour and I love how many people that you got through on this thing. Ladies and gentlemen. This guy has a massive range of people talking about touring stories and I want to bring up 1 example from D Snyder's personal favorite of mine and the quote is I I yeah I go to the exit the venue and there was 25 people marching toward us. It's about 3 a m and they weren't there to be nice. They were carrying bats boards chains.
31:04.43
Drew Fortune
Fifth.
31:15.87
jeffwatson
Hammers and they were coming for us. That's one of the quotes so tell me how you got this idea in the first place.
31:19.92
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah, yep, yep.
31:26.28
Drew Fortune
Ah, yeah I mean growing up um behind the music came out in my teen years you know VHOne's behind the music. Um and the gnarlier ones were always my favorite of course motley crew stood out as one of the best. Um.
31:36.31
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
31:41.73
Drew Fortune
Yeah I Love the ah, almost the comically ridiculous over- The-t top debaerous stories. Um, and and if you notice you know the nice ah behind the musics didn't get so much replay. But.
31:48.47
jeffwatson
And.
32:00.84
Drew Fortune
God They would just Hammer Motley Crew or poison or you know not just eighty s hairbands. But um, those were the ones that you would see over and over yeah and um, so that was that was the genesis of the idea. Um.
32:05.40
jeffwatson
Um, M C hamer.
32:19.67
Drew Fortune
But when I was when I started doing music journalism um I would I used to ask the question. What's a perfect day for ah I don't know Mark mothers bought from devo. That's just an example and um, they would tell me that and you know that was very early.
32:31.34
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
32:38.45
Drew Fortune
Very green journalism. Um, but then I started to ask? What's the worst. What's your worst moment on the road or what was the worst day for you on the road and I kind of started collecting those um those stories or so you're kind of saving them away in my memory bank and. Dean Ween it's kind of a nice segue. Um, after we went fishing that one time I remember on the boat we were ah started talking about his worst gig um, which is kind of convoluted but it's really funny. Um, well I'll just tell it really quick. Um. Ween was scheduled to play a college in Vermont and ah bust of rhymes is also on the bill. The students got to choose it was sort of like their spring fling concert thing or whatever. So I remember um, it's been a minute since I read his chapter but um.
33:24.39
jeffwatson
Um, ah ah.
33:34.49
Drew Fortune
Busta took so long setting up that the timing got all screwed up. So so when everyone came in for bustta rhymes ween was just starting and this was not wean's demo I mean this was like hardcore Busta rhymes fans.
33:52.77
jeffwatson
Um.
33:53.65
Drew Fortune
So they and Dean was like they fucking hated us right at the bat and I was doing 10 minute solos just to piss people off and he said the worst of it was when a flying forty ounce hit me right in the groin and he's like it got both of them I dropped you know when knocked out and some woman in the front row said.
34:07.96
jeffwatson
Um, ah.
34:13.55
Drew Fortune
Motherfucker you got to go. So yeah, that was he told me that on the boat I'm like oh that's amazing. We got to get this down. Um, so that was the first chapter. Ah.
34:15.88
jeffwatson
Ah.
34:26.84
jeffwatson
Ah.
34:30.76
Drew Fortune
And I just built from there originally I was going to call the book Rainer Shine um I thought it might be too I don't know morbid or depressing to just have the worst gigs. Um, but as I've learned the worst gigs at the time are just the funniest or you know the biggest train wrecks you just have to laugh at yourself.
34:37.68
jeffwatson
Um, right.
34:42.50
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
34:49.73
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
34:50.80
Drew Fortune
Um, and the worst or the best gigs did not work out at all and I really tried it was none of it was salvable. Um I remember I interviewed um my friend from frightened rabbit who sadly is no longer around. Um you know. Not to fault him or any of the people I tried to do this with but they would immediately rattle off their worst Gig Boom They knew it off the bat. Um, and then the best they would have to kind of hem and haw and well my brother was there so it was really special or I just gotten engaged and you know that's really sweet stuff. But.
35:24.67
jeffwatson
Um, one.
35:26.33
Drew Fortune
Wasn't working for the Book. So when I when I decided to focus on the worst. Um, that's when it just all came very.. It started to come very easily um, most artists would would jump at the invitation to share about their worst Gig. Um. And that's I you know I have 61 artists in the book and I wanted. You know you mentioned there's a good cross section of people I wanted to touch on every genre like and vogue is in there because obviously in vogue was huge when I was growing up in the 90 s yeah, what's their story. Um.
35:53.54
jeffwatson
Um, ah yeah, and.
36:01.51
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
36:02.15
Drew Fortune
There you know there, there's isn't one of the my favorites but it's it's cute, um and kind of funny. Um, but yeah I just I wanted to go all all over the map. Um, and I think I did pretty well with that. Um, now I'm looking look.
36:11.82
jeffwatson
You did you know I got to say now you did fantastic and here's the thing. So as I mentioned I I was in 6 bands kind of some of them lot of them overlapping but back in the 90 s that was a quote unquote professional musician meaning I made no I bear it was broke all the time. But.
36:23.32
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah.
36:30.20
jeffwatson
I got to be in the van for ten essentially ten years and you know it's interesting because first of all that first tour that you do is Exc Sta I mean I was excited me beyond belief because I'm going across the country and it's like it's that point in a band where you don't hit each other yet right? so.
36:41.72
Drew Fortune
Will you.
36:47.44
Drew Fortune
Right.
36:49.77
jeffwatson
You're just excited to be together band of Brothers and it feels like a pirate I've said this so many times it feels like you're a pirate with a bunch of pirates around you and the van is the ship and you're going from City to City and you're plundering and you're stealing and you're rocking and you're rolling and then you move in your fucking and you're moving to the next down right? and.
36:59.41
Drew Fortune
And.
37:07.25
Drew Fortune
Yeah, right.
37:08.89
jeffwatson
It's that full of connectivity and and you know being in a van and I'm 52 so you know we had cassettes go fucking figure. You know back in the 90 s and we're touring with back and when they're first starting now we're touring with weezer and they're first starting out and it was this feeling of like.
37:19.42
Drew Fortune
Um, will see.
37:24.85
jeffwatson
Like this whole silver leg too this whole Silver Lake scene in Los angeleses was a lot of fun and it's because of community and this is where I went ahead right? because what you but we've really talked about this whole ween conversation is a community. You know that you got a booji tattoo for god's sakes right.
37:32.92
Drew Fortune
Yeah, yeah.
37:43.00
Drew Fortune
Right? right.
37:44.40
jeffwatson
So you're part of a tribe and that tribe understands you and you just said it earlier too. You see a guy walking down or a woman walking down the street with a ween shirt you're in I had the same experience with another guy I talked to he's a squeeze fan but I love squeeze I Know exactly who he is now right? Not exactly.
38:00.92
Drew Fortune
True. Yep.
38:03.56
jeffwatson
But 80% of me knows 80% of him right.
38:09.56
Drew Fortune
Yeah I mean you know where he's essentially coming from with his likes and dislikes. Um, yeah, right off the bat.
38:14.72
jeffwatson
Um, art is a divining Rod to character in my opinion I get the way around. Um.
38:19.80
Drew Fortune
Sure I mean let's say he likes squeeze. Okay, we could we? He's probably kind of a new wave guy. You know you can sort of go down the list of checkboxes like I bet he's into this I bet he's into this and yeah, no, that's yes, yeah.
38:31.19
jeffwatson
Um, and also I bet he's articulate and I'll bet you appreciates higher art right? And that's what I love about conversations like these my friends is because I love myself some low art like you know gore and um dead alive to Peter facts and masterpiece. You know.
38:38.25
Drew Fortune
Right.
38:46.45
Drew Fortune
Um, Beast made. No yeah, right.
38:49.33
jeffwatson
Ah, but but I also appreciate these conversations so moving on and by the way honestly man. Okay I tell you my worst experience. Okay, there are many on the road. Um, let's go for some runners up one was happening.
38:58.44
Drew Fortune
I Would love to hear that but hold on can I ask you a bit were you were you signed at this point when you were doing this.
39:10.37
jeffwatson
Oh right? I'm kind of like I said I've been in a lot of bands. 3 of them have been quote unquote signed ah ludaf fisk was a band that I was in that was signed a bo load early in the producer who was actually on my podcast Rob schops produced the record.
39:16.60
Drew Fortune
E.
39:27.10
jeffwatson
We did and he did noa gold and and and um and then the I was in a couple of other bands that were signed to one was a major actually one was Warner Brothers and I worked there but you know we were just mid-level made nothing and had a blast all of us for.
39:28.24
Drew Fortune
Brett.
39:41.63
Drew Fortune
Sure I just wasn't sure how DIY your situation was yeah.
39:45.78
jeffwatson
Very much so very much I mean onload they could I be money at any rate so you captured it? Well I'm tipping my hat to you but real quick. My worst I think it's not really touring so much. It's actually that I was in your town of Chicago.
40:03.33
Drew Fortune
Of.
40:03.39
jeffwatson
Um, and I was recording a record with Keith Cleversley who produced the first flaming lips first produced like a flaming lips records a big one and he had a ton of acid and one night in December I'd never done acid before and he gives me this acid and I'm like a terrified drug kid and drug guy. And I cut it in half and no ah no I said Keith Cleversly who was before Dave Friedman
40:21.91
Drew Fortune
Um, hold on real quick I'm sorry Jeff real quick. Did you say Dave Friedman
40:29.17
Drew Fortune
Okay, cool. Sorry I just I misheard go ahead.
40:32.67
jeffwatson
No nope ah right? So I tore my acid in half then and could not get really high and listening to cheat trick think they're talking to me in my headphones then I walk outside in East like 35 no I think it was like a five degree weather wind chill kind of thing middle of the night I have.
40:44.90
Drew Fortune
Um.
40:50.34
jeffwatson
A t-shirt on and I'm starting to walk up and down the stretch of Chicago completely lost end up in a mexican bar that I barely remember they kicked me out and somehow I but back home gray. That's my but I got a lot of them.
40:56.22
Drew Fortune
This.
41:01.67
Drew Fortune
Um, wow.
41:07.80
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah, ah to be a flying the wall on that in that Mexican bar must have been amazing right? So that's good. Yep.
41:07.88
jeffwatson
But that's not the next.
41:15.51
jeffwatson
Ah, you're you're not getting I don't remember much I ah yeah I was had a gun I help you I had a gun held in my head when I was in Texas trying to pony up with a manager I was fun.
41:30.13
Drew Fortune
No shit. Ah whoa The man wait the manager pulled a gun on you.
41:30.63
jeffwatson
It's the road will not no, we didn't have a band manager but I met I guess made the house owner.
41:40.41
Drew Fortune
That's oh that's what I meant I'm sorry yeah I meant that yeah the ah the house guy. Wow that's insane. What like an old Texas like 6 shooter in a holster kind of deal.
41:44.26
jeffwatson
Um, yeah, yeah, one my it was one of those things where I said can I I kind of I don't know I had a gunplay on my head I don't remember what it was it looked like um I don't know all right moving on. Ah.
41:57.19
Drew Fortune
Um, yeah, right? Wow! okay.
42:01.60
jeffwatson
Really got to talk about this one. Ah as a guy who's seen a billion shows as have I right? What would you say is the most connecting live show that you've ever seen interpret that how you will.
42:22.66
Drew Fortune
Okay, um, this is kind of a 2 pronged thing. Um, so in Barrington where I grew up. Ah you know at least my high school years. Ah, it was a hippie thing. It was a total hippie scene. Um, the cool crew were hippies like even some of the jots were hippies and fish was just the soundtrack for better or worse. Um, yeah, so I never I never really connected with it. But it was just what my friends did and.
42:44.70
jeffwatson
Ah, right.
42:56.72
Drew Fortune
You know I like drugs back then so yes, going to fish shows were fun. Um, but I could never understand I I Still don't anyway I won't talk about that but I will say that under the right circumstances. There's a feeling of being locked in at a show where.
43:15.56
Drew Fortune
Call it like a mushroom acid psychedelic thing where you feel everyone is on the same page. It's all good. It's all good vibes. Everyone's moving the same way almost. That's pretty cool and there's a reason life fish Still you know has such a.
43:22.74
jeffwatson
Ah.
43:35.36
Drew Fortune
You know is legion with their fan base and so I can't really you know Target a specific fish show but I had it on numerous occasions where everything felt right with the world I guess you could put it that way. Um.
43:47.30
jeffwatson
Yeah, yeah.
43:53.22
Drew Fortune
So there's that ah I mean but my personal favorite show here's just a really cool one and I could give you a ween show at the canopy club in 2001 at Urbanna Illinois it was the greatest week of music of my life flaming lips played there and then ween played two days later
44:09.72
jeffwatson
Well oh.
44:13.20
Drew Fortune
And that place holds maybe 300 people so I mean that was kind of before both those bands really took off in a sense you know I mean ween was I don't know you know Wien was it was before streaming and you know tape trading was going on. But. Ween was not headlining laopalooza in 2001, you know, um or it was just a different thing and then you know they really became well anyway. Ah, but yeah, those shows were 2 of my favorites. Um, but here's one that I guarantee you wouldn't.
44:33.84
jeffwatson
Sure.
44:50.82
Drew Fortune
Think of as the greatest show of my life. Ah, you're familiar with Tony Clifton the Andy Kaufman character yes yeah I mean I oh right? exactly. It's a been a long con right to reveal that. Um.
44:55.89
jeffwatson
Oh ah, very much so he's me I am him actually gone.
45:07.24
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
45:09.26
Drew Fortune
Yeah, ah so anyway, um, Tony Clifton played by Bob Zamuda um ah Kauffman's old writing partner who actually used to play Tony a lot of the times back in the day when coffin was still alive. Um.
45:20.51
jeffwatson
Yeah, yeah.
45:26.11
Drew Fortune
Ah, we became I don't know my friends and I became big fans. We used to watch all the kind of old Andy Coffin specials that we keep playing like boot like Vhs is we could get our hands on man on the moon came out and what 9099 and Jim Carrey is so great in that. Um, always had a big love for Tony Clifton and that character. Um, so he he announced a tour. Ah I want to say it was in the wake of Hurricane Katrina it was a benefit tour um and he had a full brass band and showgirls and ah.
45:57.80
jeffwatson
You serious.
46:01.51
Drew Fortune
Here here's of kind of funny part of this story. Um I was writing for this Chicagos. Well it's they're based out of Chicago. It's called pop matters. Um I was the events editor at that point and I set up an interview with samuda but he played it as he was as if he was totally Tony like. The email would come from bobsuda but it would be like wow. What do you want you want to fucking talk to cluton that's me, um, but he never broke character even like when we were pre pregaining this interview. Um, but the show is.
46:22.31
jeffwatson
And.
46:27.92
jeffwatson
Oh yeah.
46:36.17
Drew Fortune
What the best thing I the best live experience I've ever had I swear it went just over four hours and Bob I mean Tony just I mean he I remember he did the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald he did um, 3 and 3
46:38.50
jeffwatson
Into.
46:47.69
jeffwatson
I. Um, no, please let me this is on video somewhere.
46:53.80
Drew Fortune
3 am m by matchbox twenty and it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen. It made me love that song? Um, but the whole time. Oh I would love it. You know you know it was kind of pre. You know, easy access to video and streaming and all that stuff. Um, there's got to be something.
47:08.53
jeffwatson
Oh my god.
47:11.74
Drew Fortune
Um, but he's like oh she says baby. It's three a m I must be lonely and like he's dancing around and is he's all sweaty. So and then he had showgirls passing out shots like every other like every 4 song or something to the entire audience. Sure if you didn't want to drink it. No.
47:14.33
jeffwatson
Um, ah.
47:29.50
jeffwatson
Um, of like ah.
47:31.55
Drew Fortune
Um, but I mean that was kind of the thing I mean so everyone's just caught. Yeah, you know the whole audience is really drunk at that point. So I go backstage and interview him and he's pretty loaded too. Um, so we did a backstage interview which was going to be a phoner the next day. Um, and for some reason I thought he met the day after because I it was it was some kind of miscommunication but I woke up to all these or all these voice messages from Tony Clifton being like Drew where the fuck are you? You don't stand me up I stand you? Um, and.
48:06.77
jeffwatson
Um, yeah.
48:10.39
Drew Fortune

48:15.61
jeffwatson

A huge fan of that band is that obviously you are softol and don. Best record ever were 1 of the best masterpiece but the one in between ah um, transmissions of a satellite heart cotton's conversations. People were tuned to a fuck out now but transmissions of his.
48:57.32
Drew Fortune
Oh it's amazing. Yep.
49:11.22
jeffwatson
Goes into kes taste metallic as I know so is the taste metallic right? cows tastes metallic certainly in Los Angeles they did this thing where they were going to do where are you either the way you're in Chicago right? Michigan okay, at any rate, there's this place in ah l a.
49:11.85
Drew Fortune
Um, love clients has vitalic for him.
49:25.39
Drew Fortune
I'm in Michigan.
49:28.77
jeffwatson
And they had this great little tiny venue maybe five hundred people one story just basically like a little building and they're kind of a not that big of a stage maybe five feet high tops and bands would come in and play so the lips promote cloud taste metallic we're doing 5 nights at this place right? Hollywood Moguls and I got in.
49:46.32
Drew Fortune
Um, wow.
49:48.11
jeffwatson
You walk in everything's dark. Um, but then they start off that first song on cloud takes metallic where you know it like yeah, there's that slow guitar thing. You know what? I mean then it goes ba ba ba ba ba boom boom boom and this so they do that.
49:58.00
Drew Fortune
And here.
50:03.92
jeffwatson
Somebody he flicks a light on and the entire room head do toe is all in Christmas lights. Even the ceiling is Christmas lights right? and it was a massive room and everybody all the hipsters like me were like holy crap. That's amazing. That was it but they just turned.
50:09.56
Drew Fortune
Now Cool yeah.
50:20.97
Drew Fortune
That's cool. Ah no, that's yeah to see them at yeah that early in those early stages is just amazing. Um I thought you're going to say you were part the parking lot experiment with sareka.
50:27.57
jeffwatson
Um, ah.
50:30.70
jeffwatson
I was but I was not at the south by southwest one I was at the original one at Warner. But thiss records hello and know and wow in ja this is the officially the dorkiest conversation in modern history. So what we're Goingnna do is we're gonna do a little quick acting involved was this kind of ha and the shtick.
50:37.90
Drew Fortune
Oh my God That's so cool.
50:46.20

He.
23:48.26
43:22.74
jeffwatson
Ah.

46:53.80
Drew Fortune
And then I felt so bad I'm like oh now Tony I'm sorry I doop the date. Well, it's no problem. That's even 1 of my favorite interviews in her. It was just just a hoot.
48:15.61
jeffwatson
Well I would I would not be surprised I could do 3 hours on Andrew Andy cofflin Andrew so but we're not going to do that just now because we're gonna wrap this fucker up. But here's what's gonna happen. We're gonna talk well actually no.
