O TYM ODCINKU
Stephen Jenkinson, culture activist, author, and teacher of grief and death literacy, reveals how facing a neurodegenerative diagnosis serves as a profound lens into the nature of mind, mortality, and human presence. Moving beyond clinical definitions of Parkinson's disease, he explains how the erosion of dopamine—what he terms the "give a shit elixir"—alters the connection between emotional affect and internal experience, forcing a drastic reconsideration of personal habits and identity.
From reflecting on the "awful clarity" of a mind in eclipse to writing his journal entries in *Trembling Still*, Stephen explores the disfiguring psychic distress that accompanies neurological decline. He cautions against viewing life as a pursuit to keep being oneself no matter what, while demonstrating how the physical act of splitting wood and performing musical recitations becomes an active refusal to prematurely surrender to physical limitation.
Tracing his journey from writing *Die Wise* to navigating his current physical reality, Stephen contrasts mainstream medical reliance on future-oriented hope with a disciplined, present-moment engagement. He examines the confounding alchemy of "grief love" and the concept of "harrowing," illustrating how breaking through hardened, inert surfaces keeps human sorrow liquid and makes room for genuine joy.
Is human identity bound strictly to neurological acuity and functional survival, or does the devastation of hard times offer a rare, grace-filled discipline to engage the present moment with profound love and clarity?
