Happy October! One less month to the next Eurovision Song Contest, and one more week where we get to showcase new music from a former contest artist with the latest single from Michael Schulte. Lithuania grabs our attention in this weeks Triple Play, and we head north to Iceland for your chosen fan favourite. Plus of course, the biggest Eurovision News stories of the past few days…
This Weeks HighlightsMichael Anthony Schulte is a German singer and songwriter. He began his singing career in 2008, posting covers on his YouTube channel and later placed third on season one of The Voice of Germany in 2012. He represented Germany in 2018 with the song 'You Let Me Walk Alone'. He finished in fourth place with 340 points.
Lithuania has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 23 times since its debut in 1994, where Ovidijus Vyšniauskas finished last, receiving “nul points”. The nation then withdrew from the contest, not returning until 1999. LT United’s sixth place in 2006 with the song “We Are the Winners” is Lithuania’s best result in the contest. The country reached the top ten for a second time in 2016, when Donny Montell finished ninth with “I’ve Been Waiting for This Night”, and for the third time in 2021, finishing eighth with The Roop and “Discoteque”.
As of 2023, Lithuania remains the only Baltic country that is yet to win the contest after wins for Estonia in 2001 and Latvia in 2002. However, since the introduction of the semi-final round in 2004, Lithuania has more final appearances than the other Baltic nations, with twelve, compared to nine for Estonia and six for Latvia.
Donatas Montvydas, better known by his stage name Donny Montell, is a Lithuanian singer-songwriter who represented Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, held in Baku, Azerbaijan. He did so for a second time in 2016, when he represented his country in Stockholm, Sweden.
Born in Vilnius, his mother was a gymnast and his father was a drummer of the hard rock group Plackartas. Montvydas’ older sister is a professional dancer. His interest in music began at a young age. He started performing publicly at age six when his vocal teacher let him participate in the contest for young singers Dainų dainelė (“The song of the Songs”), singing “Aš kiškelis mažas” and he became a laureate. In 2008 he won his first big prize when becoming the Grand Prix winner of the International Festival of Arts Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk, Belarus.
