WEBVTT
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:09.199
He goes, you bunch of fing whining, moaning, the only money we're making right now is we're renting Timmy Hunter's face out for the Chicago Blackhawk bubble.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:16.559
And I'm like, you're catching craze all over the place.
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:19.039
So where did that come from?
00:00:19.440 --> 00:00:25.519
So every time I see the Chicago Blackhawk bubble, I go, out of my pocket, I get a couple of royalties.
00:00:53.119 --> 00:00:56.880
Alongside Avalanche legend, Andrew Raycroft.
00:00:57.439 --> 00:00:58.640
Lightning Great.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:04.000
I'm the annoying one, Sabalski.
00:01:04.239 --> 00:01:11.120
Just a quick reminder, everybody, if you're enjoying the show and the content that we bring you in between the podcast, all the add-ons on social.

00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:24.159
And make sure you're following along with us on Instagram, folks, TikTok, or wherever else you're finding us.
00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:25.680
Commie, man, it's crazy.
00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:32.319
I don't know if this is like if it's the getting the uh the benefit of hanging out with YouTube rock stars, Razor.
00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:37.920
But man, like my Instagram followers have been like, not that I have a ton, but like they've been popping lately, man.
00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:39.680
A lot of so hello to all the people.
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:41.599
I don't know what it when you're whatever you're doing.
00:01:41.680 --> 00:01:42.000
Thank you.
00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:42.799
I'll take it.
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:44.000
Well, I don't know.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:46.400
I don't know what whatever we're doing, it we're doing it together.
00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:47.439
Mine's the same way, though.
00:01:47.519 --> 00:01:57.120
I will say for the last few months, like usually when I click on there, it's like you know, I'll kick, there'll be a little red dot, and there'd be some guy calling me an asshole or something on the comment.
00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:04.560
But now it's I'm like, you know, I'm getting more than just like the little, you know, I get like the little people icon and be like, oh, somebody news following it.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:06.560
Yeah, well, that's cool.
00:02:06.799 --> 00:02:10.560
Uh the I for so long I wouldn't even bother looking, right?
00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:18.800
Now I don't mind because again, it's like you sucked with the leaves, like that's all I would get from some, you know, some guy in Bellville, you know, my hometown is giving it to me.
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:21.039
So yeah, it's it's it's gotta be nice.
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:22.080
I found the show.
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:23.919
Oh, someone's watching.
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:24.960
I I find it interesting.
00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:27.840
Every once in a while click and like, like, who is this person?
00:02:27.919 --> 00:02:28.400
You know what I mean?
00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:34.800
It's sometimes it's just interesting, like you know, you just people and from places that you like would not expect.
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:42.159
And you know, it's it's sometimes I don't do that with everybody, obviously, but every once in a while, if I'm sitting there having a coffee, I'll be like, I wonder who this is, and I'll kind of go through it.
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:43.599
And anyways, it's just interesting.
00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:48.639
You know, I'll tell you, it's it is funny, you know, and and thank you to everybody who continues to find us.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:59.840
I was uh a couple of weeks ago, Brend and I were out for uh we were out in uh out in Port Moody along Brewery Row, and we went in for a bite and a and a and a pint for uh just a nice summer day.
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:05.439
We walk in, and you know, you guys have talked about you know having your stops in the over the course of the NHL career.
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:13.439
I've certainly been the media whore with all the different tourneyman stops for TSN and SportsNet and the score and NH the NHL video game.
00:03:13.599 --> 00:03:21.360
But you know, I walk in and there's two guys are sitting there right there, tipping them, and they're like, Oh my god, Sabolski, what are you doing in here in town?
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:29.280
I'm like, Well, I I you know I live in Metro Vancouver, and they're like, you know, the one guy's introducing his other buddies is like they're c'lear the Greece podcast, man.
00:03:29.360 --> 00:03:32.639
Like they're doing with Tommy and Razor, and oh my god, it's Brandon.
00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:35.840
Somebody cut these guys off.
00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:41.520
Well, Brenda's just kind of shaking her head, laughing at it, right?
00:03:41.599 --> 00:03:46.080
But it was like, all right, okay, now we're getting identified for the podcast, which is cool.
00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:47.840
So thank you.
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:50.159
And a quick reminder, everybody, we're gonna get right to it.
00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:53.039
Tim Hunter is going to be joining us on this show.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:57.840
Tim, one of the most feared enforcers in the history of the sport.
00:03:57.919 --> 00:04:00.879
He's got over 300, 3,000 pims to prove it.
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:05.439
Come, you've spent a lot of time with alumni events with uh with Tim, an A plus human being.
00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:06.560
Yeah, great guy.
00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:14.080
Uh, you know, I didn't never really, we were kind of talking about it before we started recording a little bit, just like going through like, you know, he he's he's coached for a long time too.
00:04:14.240 --> 00:04:16.160
And yeah, he was coaching the entire time.
00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:22.160
We were playing, and like I would see him once in a while, you know, but I'd never met him and you know, I never played for him or anything.
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:26.560
But yeah, since he, you know, since he was done coaching in Moose Jaw, he moved right back to Calgary.
00:04:26.639 --> 00:04:30.639
So, and he does like he's one of the alumni that like he does a lot.
00:04:30.800 --> 00:04:43.680
Like, whether it's uh, you know, he's at almost every function and he does things, whether it's you know, with the Flames alumni, sometimes you get paid a little bit, and some most of it is just volunteering your time and you're going to do things because you want to.
00:04:43.839 --> 00:04:48.879
And Tim does, you know, whether it's paid or not paid or wherever, he doesn't care.
00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:50.959
He if he's free, he goes and helps out.
00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:52.480
And he he's a really nice guy.
00:04:52.639 --> 00:04:52.879
Yeah.
00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:53.759
Absolutely.
00:04:53.839 --> 00:04:58.720
And a guy from Calgary originally, and so I'm sure there's always a little bit of that extra give back as well.
00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:03.600
So quick reminder, everybody, that the Clearin' the Creeks podcast is powered by Ozun.com.
00:05:03.680 --> 00:05:14.480

00:05:17.920 --> 00:05:18.639
Well played.
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:22.560
We're coming up for one of the toughest of all time, Tim Hunter.
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:27.519
Storytime with Tim for the next right here on Ozoun by Clearing the Craigs podcast.
00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:28.879
It's well floored for.
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:53.839
815 career games in the National Hockey League, 11 years with the Flames, three and a half in Vancouver, and stops in both Quebec and San Jose.
00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:55.199
Tim Hunter.
00:05:55.839 --> 00:05:57.279
Thank you so much for doing this, my friend.
00:05:58.160 --> 00:05:59.279
Thanks for having me, boys.
00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:03.360
You uh so first things first, you are living your best life this summer.
00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:08.240
I mean, you sent me a picture of one of the biggest hauls of fish that I have seen in quite some time.
00:06:08.319 --> 00:06:10.240
I mean, how how are things these days?
00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:12.319
They clearly look good on your end.
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:15.839
Well, I do two of my favorite things as much as I can.
00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:17.279
That's golf and fish.
00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:19.680
So uh I've done lots of both.
00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:21.920
Uh been on three fishing trips.
00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:27.680
I'm going on another one on Tuesday, and then another one at the end of the month, and lots of golf in between.
00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:29.199
So you can't complain.
00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:31.519
Somebody said, So, what do you do when you're retired?
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:33.519
I said, I do what retired people do.
00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:37.519
Where have you gone, Timmy?
00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:39.600
Are they like fairly local or are you like traveling?
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:41.120
Traveling for the fishing trips?
00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:42.160
Oh, traveling.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:50.639
Yeah, I've been to BC twice, uh, and then just came back from Winter Harbor, which is on the northwest top of Vancouver Island.
00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:54.399
Uh, we're out in the open water and it was pretty spectacular.
00:06:54.639 --> 00:07:05.839
We got our limit and Chinook, Limit and Coho, so hatchery fish and wilds, and then uh Ling Cod Limit, and only got one Halbot, but uh it was spectacular.
00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:08.639
Yeah, one that you're admitting to here on this interview.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:10.079
That's what I'm guessing.
00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:11.759
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.800
No, no, I uh my second favorite.
00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:18.399
Koho's my favorite, and then halb's my second favorite.
00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:21.759
I like Chinook, but uh yeah, I just like the Koho.
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:24.319
They uh they're nice uh sized fish.
00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:28.480
The fillets are nice, it's they're just a good, good eating fish.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:29.439
Perfect.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:31.680
Timmy, I'm gonna jump right to the point here.
00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:35.759
I was trying to think of some things to ask you this morning, and I don't think you've ever told me.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:36.639
I know a little bit about it.
00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:38.480
I'm gonna jump, get right to the point.
00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:41.839
1989, you guys win, you win in Montreal.
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:45.600
Walk me through the rest of the evening because I can't really remember what happened.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:50.319
Because you guys won in Montreal, did you guys stay overnight and then leave, or were you out right after?
00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:51.120
Like what's the one?
00:07:51.199 --> 00:07:51.920
No, no, no.
00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:55.600
You know, so you know, uh Jim and I didn't play.
00:07:55.759 --> 00:08:02.079
So we watched the game in the locker room, rode the bike for half hour during the first period, and got a workout in.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:06.319
We were in our tracksuits, and everyone says, geez, you guys should have gone on the ice with your equipment on.
00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:10.480
I'm like, no way, I'm I'm going out there the way I was, you know, we're part of the team.
00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:11.600
Yeah, no big deal.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:21.040
So, and Lanny uh, as uh gracious as he is and such a leader, had us right to the Stanley Cup, took the Stanley Cup, and we all raised it together.
00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:28.240
And then, you know, uh back in the dress room, all family and friends, they didn't come on the ice in those days.
00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:31.519
Now they go on the ice and you do all the pictures on the ice, which is pretty cool.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.759
We just went in the dress room in those dinky little dressing rooms in Montreal.
00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:40.080
There's one to dress in and one a training room, and it was just jam-packed.
00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:44.720
And once you got the owners and friends and family in there, it was just a zoo.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:58.480
At first, we just had the players in there, a bunch of beer with the players, photos, and then about I don't know, 15, 20, half hour later, all the families came in, and then you got your dad and your wife, your girlfriends, kids, whatever in there to get pictures.
00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:02.240
I had I had a buddy there as well, so had lots of photos.
00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:11.039
All the trainers and uh um scouts were in the other room, the training room, and they weren't, they couldn't get into our room so full.
00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:13.039
And I got a little note handed to me.
00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:15.360
Hey Hunts, could you take the cup over?
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:23.360
Because I said to I said to Pep, you know, we may not be able to skate the cup around the ice, but I'm going to take it off the ice.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:24.879
I'm gonna have it in the dress room.
00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:28.000
I'm gonna pour everybody a drink out of the Stanley cup.
00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:34.080
And you look at all the pictures, there's a picture of me and Lanny with the cup, but I'm pouring a drink, pouring beer into his mouth.
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:37.039
Fleur eat, everybody I'm pouring out of the Stanley Cup.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:40.720
So I had the cup, I took it over and had all the scouts and trainers.
00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:42.240
So you were the bartender.
00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:43.519
Pretty much, yeah.
00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:45.519
Yeah, that's right.
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:48.240
It's like letting the dog watch the butcher shop.
00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:53.519
It was it was pretty, it was pretty good.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:10:02.559
Uh so I took it next door, and to this day, those guys, those scouts, I'm legendary in the scouting community because I I made sure the scouts got pictures with the Stanley Cup.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:08.879
And but no, we uh and you know the great thing about winning in Montreal, no team had ever won there.
00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:15.519
The fans knew we were a better team, and they gave us a standing ovation when we were leaving the ice.
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:21.279
And that was they all stood, they all stayed for the for the cup presentation, watched us all with a cup.
00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:23.120
Uh, we did the impromptu picture.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:27.759
I think that was only the second time there was ever an impromptu picture on the ice.
00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:32.000
It turns out you had uh Joel Otto and Rick Womsley.
00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:36.159
They ran in the dress room to get the beer and didn't know we were doing the impromptu picture.
00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:37.279
They aren't in the impromptu picture.
00:10:37.600 --> 00:10:40.480
Oh no! Yeah, yes.
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:50.559
See, so anyways, so in we go, and then we leave, and we get the bus, and and it's pandemonium trying to get out of the forum and down the street.
00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:58.559
So we get the airport on the on the plane, and you know, we're going like, God, it would have been cool to have the cup on the plane and all that.
00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:11.039
And so, you know, we're we lift off and and uh just just getting past 10,000 feet or whatever, the seatbelt sign goes off, and the the captain goes, Welcome aboard, boys.
00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:13.840
Congratulations to your Stanley Cup victory.
00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:19.200
Uh, we just want to let you know that we have a special guest on the plane.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:21.200
And we're like, What?
00:11:21.440 --> 00:11:32.480
You have to look to the back of the plane, and Al Murray, Bear Cat's son, had taken bolt cutters and cut the Stanley Cup out of the box that out of the case.
00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:33.200
Oh, okay.
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:33.919
Amazing.
00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:40.720
And he brought it up the back stairs, and and he was in the bathroom with the Stanley Cup on, takeoff, taxi, and takeoff.
00:11:41.360 --> 00:11:41.919
Going up there.
00:11:42.559 --> 00:11:45.200
So the place, the place went crazy.
00:11:45.360 --> 00:11:50.639
Now we've got the cup, and we we had a whole bunch of beer and champagne and everything on the plane.
00:11:50.720 --> 00:12:01.759
And I mean, about I think it was somewhere you know, halfway home at uh two or three in the morning, and we're asking Cliff if we could stop in Winnipeg and get some more beer.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:07.360
Cliff goes, Cliff goes, Jesus Christ, he said, It's Winnipeg.
00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:09.600
They they roll the streets up at nine o'clock at night.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:15.200
You know, I don't they probably drank all the beer last night anyway, says none less.
00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:21.039
So, you know, back to Calgary, and then you know, we didn't sleep for a couple days, obviously.
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:23.759
It was it was fantastic, it was so much fun.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:25.279
Who who was on the plane, Tim?
00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:28.639
Like obviously the player, like players, coaches, friends, family.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:32.159
Yeah, so the they flew all the family out separate.
00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:40.799
We were there the day before uh the game and everything, and did the meal the night before and all that with our teammates, and the day of the game, they flew the families out.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:45.759
And I had a friend from Toronto come over and join my my dad and my wife.
00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:49.679
And um, yeah, and then then they all flew home with us.
00:12:49.759 --> 00:12:51.679
So we had everyone on the plane.
00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:58.879
The plane was jammed full, and uh, but it was some sweet celebration to to get that Stanley Cup.
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:04.240
And as you all know, there wasn't one player on that team that ever won the Stanley Cup before.
00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:05.679
Oh, that okay.
00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:07.440
I you know what I did I didn't realize that.
00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:09.279
Yeah, there's no first time for everybody.
00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:10.720
Okay, first time for everyone.
00:13:10.879 --> 00:13:11.279
Oh, cool.
00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:18.000
You know, when before when we we went in '86, you know, we had traded for John Tonelli and we had Doug Risebrow.
00:13:18.080 --> 00:13:18.399
Yeah.
00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:29.360
Um and uh they had won before, and that was kind of a Cliff's kind of you know mentorship of bringing those guys in to show us the way and and uh teach us how it was all about.
00:13:29.440 --> 00:13:34.399
So when we lost in 85, 86 to Montreal, we were fully prepared the next time.
00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:35.279
Yeah.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:37.919
That's that team, like six Hall of Famers.
00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:42.879
Am I did I count that right in terms of who who who won uh like looking back at that Flames team?
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:47.039
I mean, it comes up from time to time, but like that was a stacked roster.
00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:48.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:50.399
And I, you know, you had Cliff Fletcher in there as well.
00:13:50.559 --> 00:13:50.799
Yeah.
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:54.639
Um, and uh, you know, it had the best right wing in hockey.
00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:57.759
You had Lanny McDonald had had scored 50 goals.
00:13:57.840 --> 00:13:59.919
You have 450 goal scores on right wing.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:09.600
You had Lanny scored 66, Loube had scored 50, Mullen had scored 50, and of course I scored 62 in my career.
00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:10.720
You did.
00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:12.559
60 goal scores.
00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:15.200
Well played, well played.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:23.200
Uh Timmy, you gotta ask about the the journey to the NHL, the three years that you played prior to making it.
00:14:23.360 --> 00:14:32.960
I whenever I'm at an alumni event, I love asking the guys who played in the jungle back in the the early 80s, mid 80s what those seasons were like.
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:38.480
You had three years of a couple hundred pims a season, but um give us a couple of thoughts.
00:14:38.559 --> 00:14:40.080
I know you have a couple of great stories.
00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:46.320
Everybody does from that time while you were trying to to crack that lineup, which you finally did in '83.
00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:48.960
Yeah, we all seem to have played a little bit in the minors.
00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:49.919
Yeah, we did.
00:14:50.080 --> 00:14:55.519
Uh I have more stories from my first two years pro than the next 15.
00:14:56.480 --> 00:14:57.919
I kid you not.
00:14:58.159 --> 00:14:58.720
I do.
00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:01.919
Like the it's it's it's it's great.
00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:03.519
It's a great learning experience.
00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:06.879
It's totally dysfunctional in a lot of ways.
00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:19.600
Um, you know, we were we were just coming out of the WHA days uh with the Oilers, Hartford, Winnipeg, you know, and I'm my first year I'm in Birmingham, Birmingham, baby bulls, Birmingham Bulls.
00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:20.000
Yeah.
00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:22.159
So they're the farm team for the Flames.
00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:24.879
They were prior to the Atlanta Flames.
00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:30.080
And I go from Calgary all the way to Birmingham for my Birmingham, Alabama.
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:30.720
Yeah.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:37.279
And it was, you know, it was really a great experience uh living in the South, totally different culture.
00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:55.759
Um, and then the hockey, uh, there was a lot of guys uh still hanging on that had played in the WHA, a lot of guys that, you know, you know, uh Hansen Brothers, Carlson Brothers, uh played in the WHA, and John Brofe was my coach.
00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:56.720
Oh, I've heard of him.
00:15:58.639 --> 00:16:02.240
Brofe is is an animal legendary.
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:14.399
I heard uh Zena Kanopka played with for him in Richmond, and he had two exact same stories he told that Brofe pulled uh during his playing days with Brofe.
00:16:14.639 --> 00:16:20.480
Now you go back probably 10 years prior or 15 years prior to that, where I'm playing with Brofe, he did the same thing.
00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:23.360
You know, he's just a total nut bar.
00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:26.639
And and but you know, um what would he do?
00:16:27.200 --> 00:16:32.639
Well, he he had he he just had this love for me because he knew he knew I was really tough.
00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:36.960
I had played junior 200 two two years with 300 penalty minutes.
00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:38.720
I was the toughest guy in the Western Hockey League.
00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:51.600
I did what I wanted, and and now, you know, Cliff kind of told me you might give it you might play left wing, a little seventh defenseman, you know, a little bit of a rover if you play in the NHL, but I never played any forward in the minors.
00:16:51.679 --> 00:16:53.840
I get called up and played my first game left wing.
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:59.120
But so Brofi had me hitting a speed bag with Frank uh never beaten.
00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:00.240
Is Frank beaten?
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:05.119
And and Brofi was always you know, yeah, yeah.
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:10.480
No, I always well by the end it was kind of seldom beaten, but uh he was one tough dude.
00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:18.720
And Frankie was he showed me the ropes and how to how to do the job, like you protect your teammates and how to go out and handle things.
00:17:18.799 --> 00:17:25.839
And and you know, Brofi said to me one day, he says, uh Timmy, I think there's two ways you're gonna play in the NHL.
00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:33.599
That's number one is being the meanest mother in the Central Hockey League, or number two, being the best defensive in the central hockey league.
00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:35.359
I think you're gonna pick number one.
00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:41.759
I said I said, Oh, I said, bro, how about we we try for both?
00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:43.279
He said, good luck.
00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:51.599
So and he always he always seemed to have these um backhanded comments, you know, thrown my way.
00:17:51.759 --> 00:18:06.480
And um, but the first time, you know, I had a couple guys that played on that team, Ralph Andreessen and Jace Soloway, and they just really couldn't stand his tirades, his is you know, Neanderthal kind of coaching.
00:18:06.799 --> 00:18:10.960
But, you know, and I'd call my dad, and my dad would say, like, what's he what do you mean?
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:14.720
I saw the F-bombs and Hunter, you're this and that, and blah, blah, blah.
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:18.240
And he goes, Listen, you're not gonna play for this guy forever.
00:18:18.480 --> 00:18:23.759
But in everything he's saying, it's motivation, and it's the only way he knows how to motivate.
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:25.279
So there's a message.
00:18:25.440 --> 00:18:28.079
Find the message and put it to use.
00:18:28.559 --> 00:18:32.400
Get the older guys, get the older guys to explain to you what he's saying.
00:18:32.720 --> 00:18:34.720
You know, uh being a right defenseman.
00:18:34.880 --> 00:18:43.759
I came around the net one one game early in the season, first couple of games, and the right winger's dead available, and I was gonna pass to him, but I I'm looking up the middle and there's sentiment.
00:18:43.920 --> 00:18:45.119
I'm he's just cutting across.
00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:46.559
I'm thinking, oh, I can hit him.
00:18:46.720 --> 00:18:51.440
I pass it to him, boom, the pot, the puck gets picked off, scoring chance.
00:18:51.519 --> 00:18:52.960
I come back to the branch bench.
00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:55.759
Brofi comes flying down to the end of the bench.
00:18:55.920 --> 00:19:03.440
He's he's got this, he's got this, his his head is beat red, his hair fire, he's breathing fire.
00:19:03.599 --> 00:19:07.119
Honey, you're no Mona Lisa, pass the puck.
00:19:08.480 --> 00:19:14.079
And I'm like, I said, I said, uh, so he he's he's screaming and I he walks away.
00:19:14.160 --> 00:19:16.799
And I said the gourd, I go, who's the Mona Lisa?
00:19:17.920 --> 00:19:21.119
He goes, Timmy, you know, I'm a dumb 19-year-old kid.
00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:25.920
He goes, Timmy, Timmy, Timmy, not every pass has to be a masterpiece.
00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:26.960
Pass the puck.
00:19:27.039 --> 00:19:30.960
Come around the net, you see the first guy available, pass it right away, quick.
00:19:31.039 --> 00:19:31.279
Yeah.
00:19:31.440 --> 00:19:35.839
So years later, we were in the in the Louvre in uh Paris, and I saw the Mona Lisa.
00:19:35.920 --> 00:19:39.680
I took a picture, I text Gordon, I said, Gordon, finally found the Mona Lisa.
00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:42.960
Oh, that's funny.
00:19:43.359 --> 00:19:45.200
You know, oh, that's awesome.
00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:46.720
Just just stuff like that.
00:19:46.799 --> 00:19:54.799
And and you know, uh, we're playing a game in in Tulsa, and Winnipeg had sent down Jimmy Mann, one of the tough guys.
00:19:55.200 --> 00:19:55.759
Very tough guy.
00:19:56.559 --> 00:19:57.440
First round pick.
00:19:57.519 --> 00:20:02.640
So I I I I beat him up in the first period, and I had and I fought Rick Bonus.
00:20:02.720 --> 00:20:04.720
It did really well against Rick Bonus.
00:20:04.960 --> 00:20:08.160
And we come in between periods and we're losing like 3-1.
00:20:08.640 --> 00:20:13.759
He comes in the room, he goes, he looks around the room and he spots me, he goes, Hunter, when?
00:20:14.400 --> 00:20:17.440
When the f are you gonna do something for this hockey team?
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:21.279
And I'm like, uh, geez, I just thought I did.
00:20:21.839 --> 00:20:22.640
I didn't say that.
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:23.680
I didn't say that.
00:20:24.640 --> 00:20:27.440
And then he's he slams the door and he leaves.
00:20:27.599 --> 00:20:34.240
And and and uh and I'm going, oh, and all the guys going, Hans, you are the only guy doing something.
00:20:36.079 --> 00:20:40.240
You know, and it was it was it was, you know, and everyone stuck up for me.
00:20:40.319 --> 00:20:46.720
But so later on, team's getting ready to fold, and we're not making any money, and you know, so rumors are gonna be able to do it.
00:20:46.799 --> 00:20:48.960
And Tim, you're like what, 21, 20 years old around this?
00:20:49.200 --> 00:20:49.839
20 years old, yeah.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:51.200
19, just turned 20.
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:52.480
I was 20 in September.
00:20:52.880 --> 00:21:15.759
So, so um, and and he's always giving me these back-handed comments, and he so he's he's on a tirade, and he goes, and you know, rumors and guys quibbling and complaining, and and he goes, he goes, You bunch of whining, moaning the only money we're making right now is we're renting Timmy Hunter's face out for the Chicago Blackhawk bubble.
00:21:19.119 --> 00:21:20.000
Oh, that's funny.
00:21:20.160 --> 00:21:23.200
And I'm like, You're catching these all over the place.
00:21:23.440 --> 00:21:25.519
So, where did that come from?
00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:32.000
So every time I see the Chicago Blackhawk bubble, I go, at my pocket, I get a couple royalties.
00:21:32.319 --> 00:21:43.519
And they were funny as it was, they were my favorite team because I loved Keith Magnus, because he was like me, right defenseman, number three, tough as nails, and he could play.
00:21:43.680 --> 00:21:46.559
So it was like, God, bro, how'd you know?
00:21:46.799 --> 00:21:58.000
So, so, anyways, the team team finally folds and they have a Meyer League dispersal draft, and they're they're uh Montreal gets the first two selections.
00:21:58.079 --> 00:21:59.200
And we're like, how's this happening?
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:02.400
Picked me first selection off the team.
00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:03.519
I'm the guy they wanted.
00:22:03.599 --> 00:22:06.240
And then they took my defense partner, Gord Whopple.
00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:07.920
We're picked.
00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:08.799
I go, Whoops.
00:22:08.880 --> 00:22:09.759
I said, Aren't you excited?
00:22:09.839 --> 00:22:13.119
We're going to Halifax, to the Halifa, the Nova Scotia Voyager.
00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:15.039
He goes, Hans, it's the armpit of Canada.
00:22:15.119 --> 00:22:16.160
Do you really want to go there?
00:22:16.319 --> 00:22:17.680
It's 75 degrees out.
00:22:17.839 --> 00:22:19.359
We're laying by the pool.
00:22:20.319 --> 00:22:23.680
I said, Well, I'm thinking more hockey terms, Gord.
00:22:23.839 --> 00:22:26.160
You know, like, you know, it's a good place to play hockey.
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:27.440
He goes, I don't know about that.
00:22:27.519 --> 00:22:30.000
I heard that Bert Templeton's not much of a coach.
00:22:30.640 --> 00:22:32.000
So he's setting us.
00:22:32.160 --> 00:22:38.640
So, anyways, newspaper comes out the next day, Birmingham, whatever it's called, Herald or whatever.
00:22:38.799 --> 00:22:47.200
And uh headlines, um, Hunter, first player chosen from Birmingham Bulls in the minor minor league uh dispersal draft.
00:22:47.359 --> 00:22:48.480
John Brophy.
00:22:48.880 --> 00:22:52.480
Three months ago, there wasn't a team in hockey that wanted Tim Hunter.
00:22:52.960 --> 00:23:04.000
But through his hard work, his dedication, and how tough a motherfucker he is, no, he didn't say he said, and uh that's why he was taken first.
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:06.720
So there was another backhanded backhanded comment.
00:23:07.279 --> 00:23:08.400
Compliment, yeah.
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:11.279
What Timmy, did I hear it right?
00:23:11.359 --> 00:23:13.599
You you you didn't, and I don't want to interrupt.
00:23:13.759 --> 00:23:15.839
You every game you played in the minors, you were D.
00:23:15.920 --> 00:23:17.599
You didn't play forward until you got called up.
00:23:17.839 --> 00:23:19.359
I never played a game in forward in.
00:23:19.759 --> 00:23:20.640
Oh, I didn't know that.
00:23:20.960 --> 00:23:26.240
Two years, and then and then I get um I played in Calgary till January.
00:23:26.319 --> 00:23:31.039
I played only played 16 games my third year, and I because I only played 16 games.
00:23:31.119 --> 00:23:40.319
Like I probably played, was I probably dressed for about 25 games, but you know, uh Badger Bob, he he wouldn't give me a shift.
00:23:40.880 --> 00:23:45.119
Lanny, Lanny and Lanny and those guys are going, Bob, you can't not play Tim Hunter.
00:23:45.599 --> 00:23:49.519
You know, we go, we're in Chicago or Philadelphia, and I don't get a shift.
00:23:49.599 --> 00:23:51.680
They're going, this is where you play Tim Hunter.
00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:53.519
You know, Bob didn't quite know that.
00:23:53.599 --> 00:23:57.920
Yeah, so I get called up my first game, um, and I played forward.
00:23:58.000 --> 00:24:03.119
So then I played forward from training camp till January, sent me to the miners.
00:24:03.200 --> 00:24:06.720
I go to Colorado, played for Pierre Page, and I played defense.
00:24:06.960 --> 00:24:10.319
So it was like, holy mackerel, like what am I what am I gonna do?
00:24:10.480 --> 00:24:12.559
I would have loved to have been a defensive in the NHL.
00:24:12.640 --> 00:24:13.759
I just wasn't a good enough skater.
00:24:13.920 --> 00:24:21.440
I improved my forward skating, but I just couldn't, you know, something about those open hip turns just I couldn't get her done.
00:24:23.519 --> 00:24:24.640
Fair enough.
00:24:25.440 --> 00:24:28.240
Can I throw uh your time in Vancouver?
00:24:28.319 --> 00:24:35.920
You you came a game away with uh from winning another Stanley Cup in just an absolute epic series between the Rangers and Canucks in '94.
00:24:36.400 --> 00:24:40.960
But I I guess I'd be curious what was that team like?
00:24:41.119 --> 00:24:43.599
And is there a good Pavel Burray story?
00:24:43.839 --> 00:24:51.599
Because people who talk about playing against Peak Power, Pavel, or playing with him was just there was just another level at that time, Tim.
00:24:52.160 --> 00:24:54.960
Yeah, and he was really just coming into his own.
00:24:55.200 --> 00:25:01.519
And uh the my number one job in practice was to never get paired up with him in a race.
00:25:03.359 --> 00:25:04.400
Way away.
00:25:05.680 --> 00:25:09.599
Because Pat Quinn would have gone, holy Jesus guys, really slow.
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:12.799
I had Pat Quinn fooled.
00:25:12.880 --> 00:25:14.880
I didn't want him to see how really slow I was.
00:25:15.039 --> 00:25:18.240
You know, I was 35 at the time or 32 at the time.
00:25:18.400 --> 00:25:25.359
Um, I my my whole thing with Vancouver was um the ownership there, Griffiths family.
00:25:25.519 --> 00:25:27.680
Um you know it's really funny.
00:25:27.759 --> 00:25:34.480
I I'd go like join the team on the road, played some road games in LA and what have you, and then fly back to Vancouver.
00:25:34.960 --> 00:25:44.880
I'm staying in some rented duplot plex and renfru street over by the Coliseum, and and we get this invite to the the owner's uh place over in West Van.
00:25:45.119 --> 00:25:51.759
They own a little island, you know, you got a little road out to this little island in West Van by Horseshoe Bay, it's just beautiful property.
00:25:51.920 --> 00:25:58.480
They've got a blackfin 50-foot yacht in their in their kitchen where the boathouse is, you know, it's just amazing.
00:25:58.720 --> 00:26:04.960
So, anyways, I go I go, I'm the first guy there, and I get have a taxi drop me off, and I'm like, am I in the right place?
00:26:05.440 --> 00:26:13.359
Huge doors, huge doors, and I and I I knock on the door, and and the door slowly opens.
00:26:13.519 --> 00:26:28.960
It's really slow, and there's this tiny little lady standing there, she's like five feet tall, and she's looking at me, and she's got this scowl on her face, and I'm going, Oh my god, I've never been terrified of anyone in my life, and I'm terrified of an 85-year-old woman.
00:26:29.519 --> 00:26:35.039
She might not have been 85, but she was older, and and I'm going, she's looking at me, she puts her hands out.
00:26:35.359 --> 00:26:38.880
You, you, I used to hate your guts.
00:26:39.359 --> 00:26:39.839
I love you.
00:26:40.480 --> 00:26:41.759
She gives me a big hug.
00:26:42.079 --> 00:26:42.880
I was horrified.
00:26:42.960 --> 00:26:44.960
I was going, holy Mrs.
00:26:45.119 --> 00:26:45.759
Griffith.
00:26:46.400 --> 00:26:47.680
Hi, how are you, Emily?
00:26:47.759 --> 00:26:48.160
Nice to meet you.
00:26:48.400 --> 00:26:48.799
200.
00:26:49.039 --> 00:26:49.200
Yeah.
00:26:49.279 --> 00:26:50.480
Oh, I know who you are.
00:26:50.720 --> 00:26:51.680
Come on in.
00:26:52.079 --> 00:26:53.759
So, you know, it was great.
00:26:53.839 --> 00:27:00.240
And and uh Frank, uh, they treated us great, and and then right from the top, and then Pat Quinn.
00:27:00.960 --> 00:27:03.920
He was by far my favorite coach.
00:27:04.079 --> 00:27:15.119
Um, a lot of coaches try to do what a guy like Pat does, and that's hand the team to the players and let them manage themselves and police themselves.
00:27:15.599 --> 00:27:22.079
And we had such a, you know, not unlike our team in Calgary, so many character guys, so many guys that could be leaders.
00:27:22.480 --> 00:27:27.440
You know, Trevor, Dave Babbage, Yerky Loomey, um, all those guys.
00:27:29.279 --> 00:27:31.440
Courtney, yeah, we had both Courtney's at one time.
00:27:31.599 --> 00:27:34.079
Cliffy, Cliffy, what a great player he was.
00:27:34.240 --> 00:27:42.880
And, you know, I just love taking in care of Cliffey because you know, he was so competitive and he just needed a little bit of a little bit of help now and again, and and it was great.
00:27:42.960 --> 00:27:49.920
But you know, Pat put that team together kind of, you know, we we finished uh last in the in the in our division.
00:27:50.079 --> 00:27:59.839
Calgary was the top dog, and we beat them in the first round, and and we but we were coming on, you know, he made some trades, you know, the Courtney, the Momesso.
00:28:00.319 --> 00:28:02.720
And then, you know, we're we're and Cliff was great.
00:28:02.799 --> 00:28:04.799
Um calls me in his office one day.
00:28:04.960 --> 00:28:06.000
Have a seat, have a seat.
00:28:06.079 --> 00:28:10.480
Um hey, uh that guy there you had at your house in Calgary when you played there.
00:28:10.559 --> 00:28:15.200
Uh he he was a rookie, came in overweight, uh um left defenseman.
00:28:15.279 --> 00:28:16.160
He's going like this.
00:28:16.319 --> 00:28:17.759
I'm going, oh, Brian Glenn.
00:28:17.920 --> 00:28:18.640
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:28:18.799 --> 00:28:20.640
He's on waivers in Ottawa.
00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:21.200
What do you think?
00:28:21.359 --> 00:28:23.920
I said, Yeah, we're gonna need eight defensemen.
00:28:24.160 --> 00:28:24.799
Pick him up.
00:28:25.119 --> 00:28:25.920
Great kid.
00:28:26.079 --> 00:28:26.880
Uh, he can play.
00:28:26.960 --> 00:28:30.160
He's not super tough, um, but he can play.
00:28:30.240 --> 00:28:33.440
He may not look like a stellar athlete, but the guy can play.
00:28:35.039 --> 00:28:36.319
You know, go ahead, pick him up.
00:28:36.400 --> 00:28:36.960
Great, great.
00:28:37.039 --> 00:28:38.160
He goes, hold on a second.
00:28:38.240 --> 00:28:42.400
He said, little guy he's in Quebec, uh, left shot, winger, fast guy, French guy.
00:28:42.559 --> 00:28:45.039
Um uh Marty Jellin.
00:28:45.279 --> 00:28:45.920
Yeah, that's the guy.
00:28:46.000 --> 00:28:46.880
Uh, should we pick him up?
00:28:46.960 --> 00:28:48.160
I go, yeah, oh, I love Marty.
00:28:48.240 --> 00:28:52.000
Marty can fly, he can play, he's got he's he's real versatile, kill penalties.
00:28:52.160 --> 00:28:52.480
Sure.
00:28:52.720 --> 00:28:53.599
Okay, beat it.
00:28:53.759 --> 00:28:58.240
You know, and and Cliff was uh, I mean, Pat was just amazing like that.
00:28:58.319 --> 00:29:09.920
He just uh um trusted guys, he'd call you in, have all the players sit around the the leaders sit around the desk, throw a case of beer on the thing, okay, what's going on?
00:29:10.240 --> 00:29:23.119
And I I when I first got there, they I told my agent, I was on waivers, I forced Quebec to put me on waivers, and I was on waivers, and it was Minnesota, Vancouver, and uh San Jose were interested.
00:29:23.200 --> 00:29:26.799
And and I told my agent, I said, I can think I can help Vancouver.
00:29:26.960 --> 00:29:32.160
I think Gino could use a little bit of help, and they could use more toughness.
00:29:32.400 --> 00:29:36.960
Um and so right away, Pat put me with uh Gino as a roommate.
00:29:37.119 --> 00:29:38.640
So I roomed with Gino for a couple years.
00:29:43.599 --> 00:29:52.079
Well, Gino was Gino was a fantastic kid, and and I'll tell you what, he he is so adored in in Vancouver and BC amongst the fans.
00:29:52.960 --> 00:29:55.119
He's a legend in that uh community.
00:29:55.279 --> 00:30:00.880
And and but Gino is just young, and but his favorite guy, their pals, was Pavel.
00:30:01.279 --> 00:30:10.799
And like I had always go, come on, Gino, let's go out and pound some paper and have some beer and you know, go go uh get some dinner, and all the guys are going up, no, no, no, partner, uh, I'm gonna go, you know.
00:30:10.960 --> 00:30:14.640
Uh and he'd end up with Pavel, and they they'd have their fun.
00:30:14.799 --> 00:30:24.960
And so I finally said to Pat, I said, you know, Pat, and this is in during one of these meetings, I said, I think we should put uh Pavel back with uh Gino back with Pavel.
00:30:25.279 --> 00:30:26.960
Oh, I don't know about that.
00:30:27.119 --> 00:30:30.400
I said, listen, they're the happiest when they're together.
00:30:30.559 --> 00:30:34.000
And I explained, I said, they never, you know, they they they just hang out together.
00:30:34.160 --> 00:30:38.640
I said, they're always happy, they're like little kids out in the ice, and I think, I think it's better for them.
00:30:38.799 --> 00:30:42.480
He says, Okay, so you he says pointing at me, you take care of this.
00:30:42.640 --> 00:30:44.000
And they were never a problem.
00:30:44.240 --> 00:30:48.400
They were never a problem, you know, because I told him, I said, Gino, don't get in trouble.
00:30:49.200 --> 00:30:58.240
I know, I know your your your your worst nightmare is having a room with a 31-year-old guy, and you're 21, and I'm not doing the things you're doing.
00:31:00.319 --> 00:31:08.480
So, but Gina was great, and Pat, you know, but uh you know, Pat Pat was the guy that uh we uh we just love playing for Pat.
00:31:08.720 --> 00:31:16.240
Uh uh it was just a special thing, and and and some of the I have my some of my best stories in the NHL from playing for Pat.
00:31:16.319 --> 00:31:16.799
You know, I don't know.
00:31:16.880 --> 00:31:18.799
I commented a true leader, right, Tim?
00:31:18.880 --> 00:31:21.759
Like yeah, he was just an alpha when he walked into the room.
00:31:21.839 --> 00:31:26.319
Like there's certain people just kind of have that sort of presidential prime minister type feel.
00:31:26.400 --> 00:31:28.720
Pat Quinn was that kind of guy, in my opinion.
00:31:29.039 --> 00:31:29.599
Presence.
00:31:29.759 --> 00:31:30.559
Yeah, presence.
00:31:30.799 --> 00:31:31.519
That's what he had.
00:31:31.759 --> 00:31:34.079
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, for sure.
00:31:34.720 --> 00:31:37.680
Tim, I mean, 3,100 penalty minutes, I'd be remiss if I didn't.
00:31:37.759 --> 00:31:39.440
I don't think we've ever asked you this either.
00:31:39.599 --> 00:31:42.720
I mean, I I know there's a ton you fought literally everybody.
00:31:42.799 --> 00:31:43.359
I understand.
00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:56.720
Is there like somebody that was there a name that would like sticks out looking back that was like maybe gave you a I don't know, maybe a little bit of trouble or something you were a little uh like a little leery of, maybe a little bit, like somebody that stands out from the past at all.
00:31:57.039 --> 00:31:57.680
John Brophy.
00:31:57.920 --> 00:31:59.200
Somewhere in those 3100.
00:32:00.640 --> 00:32:05.839
You know, you never took anyone lightly, everyone was capable, and it only takes one punch.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:17.599
Um, I would say uh the two toughest, and I only fought him twice, and once was I was dumb, I didn't realize it, but um the first time was it was was uh Bob Probert.
00:32:17.680 --> 00:32:30.000
Oh and I fought him in Detroit, and he was early in his career, and I only played four or five years, and and I hit him as hard as I ever hit anyone with a punch, and he didn't even flinch.
00:32:30.480 --> 00:32:32.640
And I just I just went, uh oh, uh-oh.
00:32:33.440 --> 00:32:34.319
This is not good.
00:32:34.480 --> 00:32:35.359
That's not good.
00:32:35.599 --> 00:32:37.519
I just gave him everything I got.
00:32:37.839 --> 00:32:41.680
And and and he swung and for the fences, and and I docked him.
00:32:41.759 --> 00:32:43.920
We spun into the ice and went, thank God.
00:32:44.160 --> 00:32:47.119
And so then I fought him again in Quebec.
00:32:47.599 --> 00:33:11.359
And you know, I was playing on right wing with with uh with um couple guys, and and you know, like um Puck comes around the boards, comes comes around the boards to me, and I hear this uh um big roar of the crowd, and I'm trying to chip the puck off the D and get around him, and I look back, and Mike Huff is my left winger.
00:33:11.839 --> 00:33:14.720
He's laying on the ice and Probert skates by.
00:33:14.960 --> 00:33:19.359
I'm going, oh geez, I gotta answer this guy right at home, man.
00:33:20.240 --> 00:33:22.480
And Probert hadn't played in Canada.
00:33:22.640 --> 00:33:24.720
He played two nights earlier in Montreal.
00:33:24.880 --> 00:33:27.119
We're the second guy he played in six months.
00:33:27.200 --> 00:33:31.599
He'd been suspended for some infraction of doing something.
00:33:31.920 --> 00:33:33.599
Yeah, he wasn't allowed in Canada for a bit.
00:33:33.680 --> 00:33:34.640
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:33:34.799 --> 00:33:36.960
So I'm going, oh boy, caged animal.
00:33:37.039 --> 00:33:37.920
Now I gotta go fight him.
00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:42.640
So I go right across the ice and I cross-check him, and he's looking at me like, what are you doing?
00:33:42.799 --> 00:33:45.519
And I'm thinking, uh, what am I doing?
00:33:46.960 --> 00:33:54.079
Thank God the referees, the linesman got in, and I go to the penalty box and I'm in the penalty box and I'm going, clock's ticking down.
00:33:54.160 --> 00:33:58.079
I look across the ice and there's Probert calling off the left winger.
00:33:58.160 --> 00:33:58.880
He wants to get on.
00:33:58.960 --> 00:34:02.400
So when I come off the out of the penalty box, he's gonna attack me.
00:34:02.640 --> 00:34:08.000
Comes flying across the ice right to my get my stick out to get myself a little bit of room because he's gonna kill me.
00:34:09.760 --> 00:34:12.400
And and you probably could watch the fight.
00:34:12.639 --> 00:34:13.599
I don't do so good.
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:16.400
I don't get, you know, no one ever skated away from me.
00:34:16.559 --> 00:34:19.599
And I was laying there, they just skated away and kind of went like this.
00:34:19.760 --> 00:34:22.719
No one, but he he did a pretty good job.
00:34:22.880 --> 00:34:28.559
And I I was in, you know, it was it was tough, tough sledding, so so to speak.
00:34:28.639 --> 00:34:30.880
Um it again.
00:34:31.119 --> 00:34:31.599
Yeah, yeah.
00:34:31.679 --> 00:34:40.639
So the best part is is period Ans are going the in the in the dressing room, and the guys are going, Hans, why why'd you fight Proby?
00:34:40.960 --> 00:34:42.639
I go, Well, he ran over Huffer.
00:34:42.719 --> 00:34:44.400
Oh no, that was somebody else.
00:34:46.320 --> 00:34:47.679
You got the wrong guy.
00:34:47.920 --> 00:34:49.119
I got the wrong guy.
00:34:49.760 --> 00:34:51.199
All the wrong guys to get, too.
00:34:51.760 --> 00:34:55.119
No, no, no wonder he's looking at me like, what are you doing?
00:34:57.440 --> 00:34:59.039
Oh, that's funny.
00:34:59.760 --> 00:35:03.440
Yeah, I mean, uh, you know, and I tell people Tim, who was the other?
00:35:03.519 --> 00:35:04.000
Who was the other?
00:35:04.079 --> 00:35:05.440
You said Probert was one.
00:35:05.920 --> 00:35:07.039
Who was the other guy?
00:35:07.360 --> 00:35:11.119
Well, I and I I I get asked the this question the most.
00:35:11.280 --> 00:35:15.599
The two questions I get asked the most are who's the toughest guy you ever fought?
00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:18.079
And how many times you broke your nose?
00:35:19.519 --> 00:35:21.119
So we're not gonna ask that, Tim.
00:35:21.280 --> 00:35:23.199
We're both even on my radar.
00:35:24.400 --> 00:35:24.960
It's all good.
00:35:25.039 --> 00:35:31.920
If you've ever seen my mother, my aunt, my two uncles, you'll know that I have their nose or they have my nose, and they never played a game in the NFL.
00:35:33.280 --> 00:35:39.360
Um, so and I didn't know it at the time, but I fought Nick Fatillo in New York.
00:35:39.519 --> 00:35:39.760
First time.
00:35:40.159 --> 00:35:41.679
Oh, yeah, yeah, there's a name.
00:35:42.000 --> 00:35:45.679
Yeah, Nick was really he was intimidating, no helmet.
00:35:45.840 --> 00:35:50.480
He had these big Popeye forearms, his shirt was rolled up, tiny little gloves.
00:35:50.559 --> 00:35:52.719
He was just like ready to kill.
00:35:52.880 --> 00:35:58.960
And so I beat up Don Maloney, and then later in the game, I hadn't, you know, the third period.
00:35:59.039 --> 00:36:01.599
I played a few, and then I never saw Nick.
00:36:01.679 --> 00:36:04.400
I'm going, holy mackerel, I'm gonna get out of here alive.
00:36:04.480 --> 00:36:06.159
I'm not gonna have to deal with this guy.
00:36:06.800 --> 00:36:14.159
Well, we score and go up by two or three goals late in the game, and Bob Johnson's our coach again, a guy that doesn't know the tough guy part.
00:36:14.239 --> 00:36:27.119
And they have they have Herb Brooks, college coaches, really doesn't know the tough guy game, or maybe he does, because we score, Bob throws me out, so Herb throws out Nick, and I'm going, damn, not gonna get out of here alive.
00:36:27.199 --> 00:36:28.480
He's gonna kill me.
00:36:29.840 --> 00:36:40.159
So we face off, and just as the puck drops, Nick spears me right inside the top of my leg in that real tender area.
00:36:40.239 --> 00:36:47.519
Yeah, just misses all the stuff, and I'm like, I go down, I'm going, okay, just stay down.
00:36:47.679 --> 00:36:50.480
He's gonna get a spearing penalty, and you won't have to fight him.
00:36:50.719 --> 00:36:51.840
This is going through my mind.
00:36:51.920 --> 00:36:57.360
I'm going, no, I'm young and dumb, and I get up and I'm and Nick's giving me this.
00:36:57.519 --> 00:36:58.719
Come here, I'm gonna kill you.
00:36:58.800 --> 00:37:01.599
So I drop my gloves, I take a step towards Nick.
00:37:01.760 --> 00:37:03.440
He grabs me and pulls me in.
00:37:03.679 --> 00:37:08.000
As he's pulling me, he's throwing a punch and he hit me on the helmet.
00:37:08.800 --> 00:37:11.519
And Bear Cat's still looking for the helmet today.
00:37:11.599 --> 00:37:12.719
It flew off my head.
00:37:12.800 --> 00:37:14.079
I don't know where it went.
00:37:14.719 --> 00:37:21.119
It's it was like, and we wrestled around, it wasn't much of a fight, and I'm going, oh, thank God, I got out of here alive.
00:37:21.599 --> 00:37:25.199
But that wasn't the moment where I knew Nick was the toughest guy.
00:37:25.360 --> 00:37:29.440
So years later, playing in Calgary, and Nick had joined Calgary.
00:37:29.519 --> 00:37:33.119
We're looking for some help to, you know, we had those guys up the highway.
00:37:33.199 --> 00:37:37.199
They had five or six of them that myself and Pep and Ots had to fight.
00:37:37.360 --> 00:37:42.000
Yeah, and so we had Nick, and but Nick hadn't fought, so he was like, We're all everyone's waiting.
00:37:42.079 --> 00:37:43.679
Like, when's this guy gonna kill somebody?
00:37:43.760 --> 00:37:45.119
You know, like show us what we can do.
00:37:45.360 --> 00:37:48.639
Yeah, so we're in Vancouver and we're playing, and they had Craig Cox.
00:37:48.800 --> 00:37:49.360
Yeah.
00:37:49.679 --> 00:37:54.800
And Coxy, you know, Coxy's this big Southern California surfer dude.
00:37:55.039 --> 00:37:58.400
And I skate down, we're in the Khan, and he skates over him.
00:37:58.559 --> 00:38:00.800
He goes, Hey Hunts, you wanna go?
00:38:01.199 --> 00:38:04.719
In this surfer dude language, and I'm going, sure, man.
00:38:06.239 --> 00:38:08.239
We square off and we're getting ready to fight.
00:38:08.320 --> 00:38:10.480
And this big hand comes in and pushes me out of the way.
00:38:10.559 --> 00:38:12.800
It's Nick, he goes, Hunts, I'll take care of this guy.
00:38:12.960 --> 00:38:15.519
So they're squaring off, and Nick just goes, boom.
00:38:15.679 --> 00:38:20.880
Like the number one thing, like Nick's a golden glove boxing chat, is okay to disguise your punch.
00:38:21.039 --> 00:38:28.480
And he just snapped it out there, hit Coxy in the in the left cheek, and just caved the whole side of his face in.
00:38:28.559 --> 00:38:29.039
Oh man.
00:38:29.199 --> 00:38:36.239
And I I was standing right there and looking at him two feet away, and I saw this big divot in the side of his face.
00:38:36.400 --> 00:38:40.320
I heard it was like taking a sledgehammer and hitting the side of beef.
00:38:40.559 --> 00:38:41.119
Side of beef.
00:38:41.199 --> 00:38:41.360
Yeah.
00:38:41.519 --> 00:38:51.920
And and he he hit him, and I'm like, that is the toughest guy I ever fought because that could have been me four years ago in Madison Square Gardens when I ducked.
00:38:52.159 --> 00:38:52.320
Right.
00:38:52.719 --> 00:38:54.000
Could have been my face.
00:38:54.960 --> 00:38:57.440
And and that was the power that Nick had.
00:38:57.599 --> 00:38:59.280
And I I could not believe it.
00:38:59.519 --> 00:39:00.719
He was a golden glove boxer.
00:39:00.880 --> 00:39:02.719
I knew he boxed, I didn't know golden gloves.
00:39:02.960 --> 00:39:06.400
He even had that look, Tim, that just looked a little out there on the ice.
00:39:06.880 --> 00:39:07.199
Oh, yeah.
00:39:07.440 --> 00:39:08.800
And with no helmet on, you know.
00:39:10.079 --> 00:39:17.360
He's still like I see uh Ranger uh alumni stuff, and I he he he looks like uh he looks like a hitman for the mafia.
00:39:19.199 --> 00:39:20.159
Yeah, he's got that look.
00:39:20.559 --> 00:39:21.599
That's kind of you, right?
00:39:21.920 --> 00:39:22.559
Yeah.
00:39:23.280 --> 00:39:25.199
Oh great stuff.
00:39:25.519 --> 00:39:26.239
Great stuff.
00:39:26.480 --> 00:39:30.639
Tim, what's your best other than the cup, what's your best National Hockey League moment?
00:39:31.119 --> 00:39:36.719
Uh just playing my first game and knowing knowing that I I got to the NHL to play.
00:39:36.800 --> 00:39:37.920
I played in the corral.
00:39:38.400 --> 00:39:50.480
Um, you know, you know, it was always the those great things, the uh the the older guys, they all, you know, take you under the wing and and tell you like hunts, just do your thing, play it.
00:39:50.559 --> 00:39:51.599
And I'm playing left wing.
00:39:51.679 --> 00:39:53.119
I'd never played left wing before.
00:39:53.280 --> 00:39:55.760
And I played with Guy Schonard, he set me up.
00:39:55.920 --> 00:40:00.559
If I could one time the puck, I would have scored, but I wasn't really good at one timing the puck.
00:40:01.119 --> 00:40:06.800
Especially on my off wing and getting my hips open because I couldn't turn anyways, because they open hip turn.
00:40:06.880 --> 00:40:09.519
And then I fought Glenn Cochran and did really well.
00:40:09.599 --> 00:40:15.760
And you know, again, those guys are saying hey hunts, like you know, Ben Wilson, Glenn Cochran, you know, like be careful.
00:40:15.920 --> 00:40:16.719
This guy does that.
00:40:17.280 --> 00:40:21.119
Cochrane comes over and then underneath, and I'm fighting Cochrane.
00:40:21.199 --> 00:40:23.760
I ran him through the boards, glass came out.
00:40:24.239 --> 00:40:25.039
He's not happy.
00:40:25.119 --> 00:40:26.960
So we was a big dude too, wasn't he?
00:40:27.119 --> 00:40:29.360
Oh, he was like Yeah, I think I met him in Kelowna.
00:40:29.760 --> 00:40:33.920
He was like 6'4, and I was only 6'2, and he was one of the biggest guys in the league at the time.
00:40:34.000 --> 00:40:42.239
And yeah, and this punch goes goes straight up, and I'm going, thank God I listened to Eric Vale, you know, Willie the Pl will Willie uh Plett.
00:40:42.400 --> 00:40:50.079
And uh um, but it was just just to have my family at the game and and uh just that experience, you know.
00:40:50.159 --> 00:40:57.440
And I mean there's lots of great moments just just having your playing your first game and you know, little things like scoring your first goal and and all that.
00:40:57.599 --> 00:41:01.440
You just kind of like you you've kind of made it, you've arrived.
00:41:01.599 --> 00:41:05.920
And I always thought that if I played one year, I'd play two.
00:41:06.079 --> 00:41:07.840
If I played two, I'd play five.
00:41:08.000 --> 00:41:10.800
If I played five, I'd played basically as long as I wanted.
00:41:10.960 --> 00:41:11.519
And I did.
00:41:11.599 --> 00:41:13.840
I got to play till I was 37.
00:41:14.239 --> 00:41:20.480
Um and I just had I retired on my terms, and it was I had a just a fantastic career.
00:41:20.559 --> 00:41:23.360
I just uh hell career.
00:41:23.840 --> 00:41:25.519
I got one more for you, Tim.
00:41:25.920 --> 00:41:27.360
I've never asked you this, I don't think.
00:41:27.440 --> 00:41:33.039
You coach for a long time, assistant in the NHL for years, and then six years as the head coach there in uh Moose Jaw, right?
00:41:33.199 --> 00:41:33.679
Yeah.
00:41:34.000 --> 00:41:36.639
Well, other so I mean you coached a long time.
00:41:36.800 --> 00:41:40.960
What would you say your favorite part of the job was, and what would your least favorite been?
00:41:41.039 --> 00:41:42.559
I don't think I've ever asked you that.
00:41:43.440 --> 00:41:49.840
Favorite part um was being allowed to be um an innovator.
00:41:50.000 --> 00:41:52.239
So Ron Wilson uh was my coach.
00:41:52.320 --> 00:42:09.280
I coached for Ron for 15 years, and Ron told me when I first started the job, he said, Listen, don't be a copycat and do what all the other assistant coaches did when you were playing, or whatever you see other assistant or you think the job should be done.
00:42:09.760 --> 00:42:12.880
Be an innovator, be an entrepreneur in your own position.
00:42:13.119 --> 00:42:18.880
So he says, and you know, if you try something and you it up, hockey players aren't that smart anyways.
00:42:19.119 --> 00:42:20.880
So they won't know, they won't know.
00:42:21.119 --> 00:42:21.920
They won't notice.
00:42:22.559 --> 00:42:23.440
Yeah, yeah.
00:42:23.679 --> 00:42:35.199
So um we we that got me going on looking for different ways and different things to to do drills, to to you know, have fun with the guys.
00:42:35.360 --> 00:42:45.920
Uh, you know, and I had another assistant that was started with Tim Army, and Tim Tim's in Anaheim and um long time assistant coach, a little head, bit of a head coach here and there.
00:42:46.079 --> 00:42:47.519
Um, but same thing.
00:42:47.679 --> 00:42:50.079
We started in Washington with digital video.
00:42:51.039 --> 00:43:10.000
Um, uh we we were the first team in the NHL to have a bench monitor, and so all that stuff, being being creative and and putting all that stuff together and using it in a real constructive way to be able to show your star players, you know, where sticks are in the power play when you fake there, go here, where did the sticks go?
00:43:10.079 --> 00:43:13.519
So you can no look and rink wide pass and things like that.
00:43:13.679 --> 00:43:16.960
You're able to show players and and teach them.
00:43:17.199 --> 00:43:25.679
Um, and then you know, transitioning from Washington to San Jose and then starting to take all that into another level.
00:43:26.000 --> 00:43:32.239
Um, you know, was that was that was probably that and and and a lot of the players.
00:43:32.320 --> 00:43:34.880
I I coached a lot of really good people.
00:43:35.440 --> 00:43:43.119
And uh, you know, you meet guys like Joe Thornton, you know, he inducted in the Holy Hall of Fame last year.
00:43:43.360 --> 00:43:46.239
And I was talking to Lanny, he said, What a guy.
00:43:46.400 --> 00:43:48.159
He's just the super guy.
00:43:48.320 --> 00:43:49.679
He's a man's man.
00:43:49.920 --> 00:43:52.559
He he was unbelievable to to coach.
00:43:52.639 --> 00:43:57.840
And he always came in early, he'd come in the coach's office and sit and have a coffee with us and just chew the fat.
00:43:58.079 --> 00:43:59.760
It wasn't so much about the game or hockey.
00:44:00.320 --> 00:44:01.199
just just hanging out.
00:44:01.599 --> 00:44:02.480
What are you guys doing now?
00:44:02.559 --> 00:44:03.039
What's going on?
00:44:03.440 --> 00:44:04.719
What's up with the bench monitor?
00:44:04.800 --> 00:46:07.199
What's going on with the you know we had these uh whiteboards in the room and it was kind of fun stuff we did and and you know just cool stuff and Joe was like so generous with his uh with his money and his time uh for the players you know he he he uh he spent a lot of money behind the scenes making sure everybody was happy and everyone everything got taken care of and and no you know you never wanted anyone to know that he was buying lunch for the players every day because the owner didn't want to pay for it every day but and Joe he said well what where's where where's lunch day well we're not you can't have it every day well tell tell miles put it on my tab charge me we're having lunch every day we're here we're practicing you know just a that guy and uh you know Tamo Solani another guy very similar very very gracious um you know uh compassionate towards his teammates towards the coaches uh just you know you just love a guy like that because he loves playing for you um guys like that are just so much fun to to coach and be around I mean there's tons and tons of them but uh you know those two guys really stand out and that was the fun part and the I think if the worst part is you know after a while you start to get calloused it was just it's just how much they move coaches and a lot of it's just and there's a definitely a reason for it a lot of it but you know we're you know we're in so five years in Washington then six years in San Jose and we had the best record in the West best power play penalty killing low schools for most goals most goals for low schools against won the Pacific all this and we lost Edmonton the conference finals and we we did we we had to change our jobs we didn't get we didn't get re-signed yes but but you know we all went to Toronto and I almost tripled my salary so I I wasn't really complaining.
00:46:07.519 --> 00:51:04.719
That's all right too you know I used to tell all the all the you know the general manager never negotiated contract they had another guy that did that he was like the contract guy and I'd say to the contract guy I said you know there's no salary cap on coach's contract it worked out yeah well I gotta tell you your your time like for somebody who grew up in a sarcastic household I loved being around Ron Wilson because of the just the sense you but between you and and and Ron like I know the the success wasn't there in Toronto but man you guys were a lot of fun to chat with uh you know at a time where you're always surrounded by a million cameras and you got to watch what you say but uh you guys were a blast you guys were a lot of fun yeah yeah and I I always I was I was uh talking with um Elliot Friedman one day and I told him I said uh he he came and he said Tim Tim uh I'm doing a podcast and I'm like what's that right it's total ESA it's total ESA 2008 and uh I said oh a podcast yeah oh he's well he says I want to talk about you know there's rumor that they might fire Ron I said I'm not talking about rumors I'm Ron's right hand man I'm loyal to Ron and you're not getting me to talk about so I told Ron that he says well F Elliot we stopped talking to Elliot because he was like the sideline guy to talk to we outed Elliot oh boy it was like you know but anyways it was just kind of fun stuff I mean it and but Ron yeah Ron might have got carried away now and again let's see and but that was just his his makeup Ron did not stop for fools I'll tell you that oh I mean him announcing his uh contract extension on Christmas Day went over like a lead balloon for a long time the power of social media there was no rules right no no there's still not many rules thank you so much for this uh one of the most feared personalities in the history of hockey and now it's just coho in the water that have to worry about you these days um this was this was an absolute treat uh open invitation if you ever want to come back and hang out with us this was so much fun Tim thank you great thanks Timmy yeah thank you over 3100 minutes of the National Hockey League when it comes to penalties over 815 games Stanley Cup winner Tim Hunter joining us here on the Clearing the Crease podcast powered by Ozoon that was well played that I don't know if I have laughed as hard throughout a guest interview the Chicago jersey for me is that is an all-time store retting his face up for the jersey in Chicago oh that is wonderful wonderful grophy stories I I didn't expect I didn't even put those two together but you can you can imagine uh he has about a hundred more of those kind of comments the Mona Lisa got me what's Mona Lisa which which you know for a 19 year old that that probably tracks right no a hundred percent oh so good uh okay thank you so much to Tim Hunter for joining us here on the show okay time for our fan question of the week this is when we turn it over to you again if you have a question you'd like to hit the boys with uh use the hashtag ask ctc in the comments on YouTube on Instagram on TikTok wherever you want to find us on social and uh when we find them we try to work them into the show one a week so here we go this one coming from M Bark okay uh and says when's the first time that you guys played as yourself in a video game that must have been cool and if it was in NHL did Sabalski call the action love the show um was the first time you play it as yourself in a video game i got you guys were already done by the time i i was starting to work with the well i was gonna ask you well when was the first year for you all when did you nice was my first year yeah okay long gone by that we were in the alumni the alumni section that's the 19th alumni section that they came up with they finally got to call me and I in those names after 2020 um yeah absolutely I would have looked that up as soon as I played in the NHL whether you know 2000 2001 was my first season um I ended up I would have ended up in the game probably in 01 with like a a 48 rating and and I would have played and I would have lost seven nothing every game because I stunk in the game but definitely one of the things like the hockey card was a cool thing to get the the first custom stick with your name on it was cool to get and then of course the video game that's that's kind of when you you really make it in the NHL to get on get on EA Sports.
00:51:04.960 --> 00:52:33.119
Yeah I I would have been the same time frame I remember being I don't remember exactly when it was but it probably would have been the same thing as you Razor I remember and I used to play video games back then like quite a bit I did up till like till I got to Columbus and then all of a sudden I just stopped I don't know why I didn't mean to or anything but anyways I used to play a lot of video games and I was so pumped like when I'm like man I hope I'm in this game that this is going to be awesome I go buy it right away put the little DVD thing in or whatever and I remember playing myself I was so excited and I started playing with myself that sounds terrible but started playing myself on the video game and I was so shitty I was basically unplayable and I was so slow I'm like do I really look this bad when I play I am terrible at this game like you couldn't even I couldn't even play myself I was that bad I couldn't catch anybody I couldn't do anything I couldn't even shoot the puck my like I think my rating on my shot was like 40 or something I'm like man my shot's not that bad anyways I remember being really really excited and then I was like oh no you I if I wanted to win a game I couldn't play myself there was no chance like every goal went in every shot yeah it's just a yeah so it like Kami it feels real good and then you get put in your place just like everything else in the National League real quick.
00:52:33.360 --> 00:54:12.639
But you guys were both of the generation and and razor I love the fact that you kind of point out like the hockey card uh you know the collectibles industry is red hot again but like I think the hockey card to be in the video game because you guys are of that's that sort of video game generation growing up with it um and I think the video game the hockey card and then to get your first stick I think that's so neat but you guys were the generation where ratings I think they're a little more balanced now where even if you're you know even if you're a fringe NHL player like you're still in the 70s where there's nobody who's got murderous rating where like I can remember some of those mid 90s like guys had you know 47s or 50 right and so yeah you're like you're not you're never you know you're never not turning off the line chain just to put them on the ice so I can totally have to Jeremy Rohnick's just blowing your force off a bird you're still doing it in 2000 just blowing by everybody just ripping by everybody yeah yeah I mean one of the coolest things I always found like that I was really proud of what my first year being involved with the game was um you know just being able to put to voice my name like obviously not having a built-in player but just to be able to have my name said correctly by now it's obviously me as the commentator but it was you know an incorporator I'd put my put my friends' names in there and then you know one of the things I'm pretty proud of that to throw out to talk to the producers at EA and they said hey what if we do a call out to the community and and see if you know if your name's not in the game if you're interested and you know got hundreds of responses from people on social media and just work those game names in and you know here we are eight years later and I'll still get messages from people like thank you for making me feel just thanks for making me feel included in the game.
00:54:12.719 --> 00:54:22.239
Like I would have never had that otherwise you know for certain names that unless that player unless that name is an NHL player they weren't traditionally in there and they've kind of expanded it.
00:54:22.320 --> 00:54:25.679
So yeah it's a great story both of you guys so great question I love it.
00:54:26.960 --> 00:54:28.639
Yeah that's that's that's very good.
00:54:28.800 --> 00:54:32.000
Okay uh on that note let's uh wind this one down.
00:54:32.079 --> 00:54:37.679

00:55:18.639 --> 00:55:32.559
Well played it's a
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:09.199
He goes, you bunch of fing whining, moaning, the only money we're making right now is we're renting Timmy Hunter's face out for the Chicago Blackhawk bubble.
00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:16.559
And I'm like, you're catching craze all over the place.
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:19.039
So where did that come from?
00:00:19.440 --> 00:00:25.519
So every time I see the Chicago Blackhawk bubble, I go, out of my pocket, I get a couple of royalties.
00:00:53.119 --> 00:00:56.880
Alongside Avalanche legend, Andrew Raycroft.
00:00:57.439 --> 00:00:58.640
Lightning Great.
00:01:02.079 --> 00:01:04.000
I'm the annoying one, Sabalski.

00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:25.680
Commie, man, it's crazy.
00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:32.319
I don't know if this is like if it's the getting the uh the benefit of hanging out with YouTube rock stars, Razor.
00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:37.920
But man, like my Instagram followers have been like, not that I have a ton, but like they've been popping lately, man.
00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:39.680
A lot of so hello to all the people.
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:41.599
I don't know what it when you're whatever you're doing.
00:01:41.680 --> 00:01:42.000
Thank you.
00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:42.799
I'll take it.
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:44.000
Well, I don't know.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:46.400
I don't know what whatever we're doing, it we're doing it together.
00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:47.439
Mine's the same way, though.
00:01:47.519 --> 00:01:57.120
I will say for the last few months, like usually when I click on there, it's like you know, I'll kick, there'll be a little red dot, and there'd be some guy calling me an asshole or something on the comment.
00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:04.560
But now it's I'm like, you know, I'm getting more than just like the little, you know, I get like the little people icon and be like, oh, somebody news following it.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:06.560
Yeah, well, that's cool.
00:02:06.799 --> 00:02:10.560
Uh the I for so long I wouldn't even bother looking, right?
00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:18.800
Now I don't mind because again, it's like you sucked with the leaves, like that's all I would get from some, you know, some guy in Bellville, you know, my hometown is giving it to me.
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:21.039
So yeah, it's it's it's gotta be nice.
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:22.080
I found the show.
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:23.919
Oh, someone's watching.
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:24.960
I I find it interesting.
00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:27.840
Every once in a while click and like, like, who is this person?
00:02:27.919 --> 00:02:28.400
You know what I mean?
00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:34.800
It's sometimes it's just interesting, like you know, you just people and from places that you like would not expect.
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:42.159
And you know, it's it's sometimes I don't do that with everybody, obviously, but every once in a while, if I'm sitting there having a coffee, I'll be like, I wonder who this is, and I'll kind of go through it.
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:43.599
And anyways, it's just interesting.
00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:48.639
You know, I'll tell you, it's it is funny, you know, and and thank you to everybody who continues to find us.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:59.840
I was uh a couple of weeks ago, Brend and I were out for uh we were out in uh out in Port Moody along Brewery Row, and we went in for a bite and a and a and a pint for uh just a nice summer day.
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:05.439
We walk in, and you know, you guys have talked about you know having your stops in the over the course of the NHL career.
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:13.439
I've certainly been the media whore with all the different tourneyman stops for TSN and SportsNet and the score and NH the NHL video game.
00:03:13.599 --> 00:03:21.360
But you know, I walk in and there's two guys are sitting there right there, tipping them, and they're like, Oh my god, Sabolski, what are you doing in here in town?
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:29.280
I'm like, Well, I I you know I live in Metro Vancouver, and they're like, you know, the one guy's introducing his other buddies is like they're c'lear the Greece podcast, man.
00:03:29.360 --> 00:03:32.639
Like they're doing with Tommy and Razor, and oh my god, it's Brandon.
00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:35.840
Somebody cut these guys off.
00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:41.520
Well, Brenda's just kind of shaking her head, laughing at it, right?
00:03:41.599 --> 00:03:46.080
But it was like, all right, okay, now we're getting identified for the podcast, which is cool.
00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:47.840
So thank you.
00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:50.159
And a quick reminder, everybody, we're gonna get right to it.
00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:53.039
Tim Hunter is going to be joining us on this show.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:57.840
Tim, one of the most feared enforcers in the history of the sport.
00:03:57.919 --> 00:04:00.879
He's got over 300, 3,000 pims to prove it.
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:05.439
Come, you've spent a lot of time with alumni events with uh with Tim, an A plus human being.
00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:06.560
Yeah, great guy.
00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:14.080
Uh, you know, I didn't never really, we were kind of talking about it before we started recording a little bit, just like going through like, you know, he he's he's coached for a long time too.
00:04:14.240 --> 00:04:16.160
And yeah, he was coaching the entire time.
00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:22.160
We were playing, and like I would see him once in a while, you know, but I'd never met him and you know, I never played for him or anything.
00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:26.560
But yeah, since he, you know, since he was done coaching in Moose Jaw, he moved right back to Calgary.
00:04:26.639 --> 00:04:30.639
So, and he does like he's one of the alumni that like he does a lot.
00:04:30.800 --> 00:04:43.680
Like, whether it's uh, you know, he's at almost every function and he does things, whether it's you know, with the Flames alumni, sometimes you get paid a little bit, and some most of it is just volunteering your time and you're going to do things because you want to.
00:04:43.839 --> 00:04:48.879
And Tim does, you know, whether it's paid or not paid or wherever, he doesn't care.
00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:50.959
He if he's free, he goes and helps out.
00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:52.480
And he he's a really nice guy.
00:04:52.639 --> 00:04:52.879
Yeah.
00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:53.759
Absolutely.
00:04:53.839 --> 00:04:58.720
And a guy from Calgary originally, and so I'm sure there's always a little bit of that extra give back as well.
00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:03.600
So quick reminder, everybody, that the Clearin' the Creeks podcast is powered by Ozun.com.
00:05:03.680 --> 00:05:14.480
The clearest route to winning big is to play on Ozun because Ozun's got your cover for all the props, game lines, futures, whether it's on the ice, on the pitch, the diamond, the gridiron.
00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:17.759
Make your power play, score big with Ozoon.
00:05:17.920 --> 00:05:18.639
Well played.
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:22.560
We're coming up for one of the toughest of all time, Tim Hunter.
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:27.519
Storytime with Tim for the next right here on Ozoun by Clearing the Craigs podcast.
00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:28.879
It's well floored for.
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:53.839
815 career games in the National Hockey League, 11 years with the Flames, three and a half in Vancouver, and stops in both Quebec and San Jose.
00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:55.199
Tim Hunter.
00:05:55.839 --> 00:05:57.279
Thank you so much for doing this, my friend.
00:05:58.160 --> 00:05:59.279
Thanks for having me, boys.
00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:03.360
You uh so first things first, you are living your best life this summer.
00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:08.240
I mean, you sent me a picture of one of the biggest hauls of fish that I have seen in quite some time.
00:06:08.319 --> 00:06:10.240
I mean, how how are things these days?
00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:12.319
They clearly look good on your end.
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:15.839
Well, I do two of my favorite things as much as I can.
00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:17.279
That's golf and fish.
00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:19.680
So uh I've done lots of both.
00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:21.920
Uh been on three fishing trips.
00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:27.680
I'm going on another one on Tuesday, and then another one at the end of the month, and lots of golf in between.
00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:29.199
So you can't complain.
00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:31.519
Somebody said, So, what do you do when you're retired?
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:33.519
I said, I do what retired people do.
00:06:36.319 --> 00:06:37.519
Where have you gone, Timmy?
00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:39.600
Are they like fairly local or are you like traveling?
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:41.120
Traveling for the fishing trips?
00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:42.160
Oh, traveling.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:50.639
Yeah, I've been to BC twice, uh, and then just came back from Winter Harbor, which is on the northwest top of Vancouver Island.
00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:54.399
Uh, we're out in the open water and it was pretty spectacular.
00:06:54.639 --> 00:07:05.839
We got our limit and Chinook, Limit and Coho, so hatchery fish and wilds, and then uh Ling Cod Limit, and only got one Halbot, but uh it was spectacular.
00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:08.639
Yeah, one that you're admitting to here on this interview.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:10.079
That's what I'm guessing.
00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:11.759
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.800
No, no, I uh my second favorite.
00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:18.399
Koho's my favorite, and then halb's my second favorite.
00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:21.759
I like Chinook, but uh yeah, I just like the Koho.
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:24.319
They uh they're nice uh sized fish.
00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:28.480
The fillets are nice, it's they're just a good, good eating fish.
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:29.439
Perfect.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:31.680
Timmy, I'm gonna jump right to the point here.
00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:35.759
I was trying to think of some things to ask you this morning, and I don't think you've ever told me.
00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:36.639
I know a little bit about it.
00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:38.480
I'm gonna jump, get right to the point.
00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:41.839
1989, you guys win, you win in Montreal.
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:45.600
Walk me through the rest of the evening because I can't really remember what happened.
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:50.319
Because you guys won in Montreal, did you guys stay overnight and then leave, or were you out right after?
00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:51.120
Like what's the one?
00:07:51.199 --> 00:07:51.920
No, no, no.
00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:55.600
You know, so you know, uh Jim and I didn't play.
00:07:55.759 --> 00:08:02.079
So we watched the game in the locker room, rode the bike for half hour during the first period, and got a workout in.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:06.319
We were in our tracksuits, and everyone says, geez, you guys should have gone on the ice with your equipment on.
00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:10.480
I'm like, no way, I'm I'm going out there the way I was, you know, we're part of the team.
00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:11.600
Yeah, no big deal.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:21.040
So, and Lanny uh, as uh gracious as he is and such a leader, had us right to the Stanley Cup, took the Stanley Cup, and we all raised it together.
00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:28.240
And then, you know, uh back in the dress room, all family and friends, they didn't come on the ice in those days.
00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:31.519
Now they go on the ice and you do all the pictures on the ice, which is pretty cool.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.759
We just went in the dress room in those dinky little dressing rooms in Montreal.
00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:40.080
There's one to dress in and one a training room, and it was just jam-packed.
00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:44.720
And once you got the owners and friends and family in there, it was just a zoo.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:58.480
At first, we just had the players in there, a bunch of beer with the players, photos, and then about I don't know, 15, 20, half hour later, all the families came in, and then you got your dad and your wife, your girlfriends, kids, whatever in there to get pictures.
00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:02.240
I had I had a buddy there as well, so had lots of photos.
00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:11.039
All the trainers and uh um scouts were in the other room, the training room, and they weren't, they couldn't get into our room so full.
00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:13.039
And I got a little note handed to me.
00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:15.360
Hey Hunts, could you take the cup over?
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:23.360
Because I said to I said to Pep, you know, we may not be able to skate the cup around the ice, but I'm going to take it off the ice.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:24.879
I'm gonna have it in the dress room.
00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:28.000
I'm gonna pour everybody a drink out of the Stanley cup.
00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:34.080
And you look at all the pictures, there's a picture of me and Lanny with the cup, but I'm pouring a drink, pouring beer into his mouth.
00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:37.039
Fleur eat, everybody I'm pouring out of the Stanley Cup.
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:40.720
So I had the cup, I took it over and had all the scouts and trainers.
00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:42.240
So you were the bartender.
00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:43.519
Pretty much, yeah.
00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:45.519
Yeah, that's right.
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:48.240
It's like letting the dog watch the butcher shop.
00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:53.519
It was it was pretty, it was pretty good.
00:09:53.600 --> 00:10:02.559
Uh so I took it next door, and to this day, those guys, those scouts, I'm legendary in the scouting community because I I made sure the scouts got pictures with the Stanley Cup.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:08.879
And but no, we uh and you know the great thing about winning in Montreal, no team had ever won there.
00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:15.519
The fans knew we were a better team, and they gave us a standing ovation when we were leaving the ice.
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:21.279
And that was they all stood, they all stayed for the for the cup presentation, watched us all with a cup.
00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:23.120
Uh, we did the impromptu picture.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:27.759
I think that was only the second time there was ever an impromptu picture on the ice.
00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:32.000
It turns out you had uh Joel Otto and Rick Womsley.
00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:36.159
They ran in the dress room to get the beer and didn't know we were doing the impromptu picture.
00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:37.279
They aren't in the impromptu picture.
00:10:37.600 --> 00:10:40.480
Oh no! Yeah, yes.
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:50.559
See, so anyways, so in we go, and then we leave, and we get the bus, and and it's pandemonium trying to get out of the forum and down the street.
00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:58.559
So we get the airport on the on the plane, and you know, we're going like, God, it would have been cool to have the cup on the plane and all that.
00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:11.039
And so, you know, we're we lift off and and uh just just getting past 10,000 feet or whatever, the seatbelt sign goes off, and the the captain goes, Welcome aboard, boys.
00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:13.840
Congratulations to your Stanley Cup victory.
00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:19.200
Uh, we just want to let you know that we have a special guest on the plane.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:21.200
And we're like, What?
00:11:21.440 --> 00:11:32.480
You have to look to the back of the plane, and Al Murray, Bear Cat's son, had taken bolt cutters and cut the Stanley Cup out of the box that out of the case.
00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:33.200
Oh, okay.
00:11:33.440 --> 00:11:33.919
Amazing.
00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:40.720
And he brought it up the back stairs, and and he was in the bathroom with the Stanley Cup on, takeoff, taxi, and takeoff.
00:11:41.360 --> 00:11:41.919
Going up there.
00:11:42.559 --> 00:11:45.200
So the place, the place went crazy.
00:11:45.360 --> 00:11:50.639
Now we've got the cup, and we we had a whole bunch of beer and champagne and everything on the plane.
00:11:50.720 --> 00:12:01.759
And I mean, about I think it was somewhere you know, halfway home at uh two or three in the morning, and we're asking Cliff if we could stop in Winnipeg and get some more beer.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:07.360
Cliff goes, Cliff goes, Jesus Christ, he said, It's Winnipeg.
00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:09.600
They they roll the streets up at nine o'clock at night.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:15.200
You know, I don't they probably drank all the beer last night anyway, says none less.
00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:21.039
So, you know, back to Calgary, and then you know, we didn't sleep for a couple days, obviously.
00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:23.759
It was it was fantastic, it was so much fun.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:25.279
Who who was on the plane, Tim?
00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:28.639
Like obviously the player, like players, coaches, friends, family.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:32.159
Yeah, so the they flew all the family out separate.
00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:40.799
We were there the day before uh the game and everything, and did the meal the night before and all that with our teammates, and the day of the game, they flew the families out.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:45.759
And I had a friend from Toronto come over and join my my dad and my wife.
00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:49.679
And um, yeah, and then then they all flew home with us.
00:12:49.759 --> 00:12:51.679
So we had everyone on the plane.
00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:58.879
The plane was jammed full, and uh, but it was some sweet celebration to to get that Stanley Cup.
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:04.240
And as you all know, there wasn't one player on that team that ever won the Stanley Cup before.
00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:05.679
Oh, that okay.
00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:07.440
I you know what I did I didn't realize that.
00:13:07.600 --> 00:13:09.279
Yeah, there's no first time for everybody.
00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:10.720
Okay, first time for everyone.
00:13:10.879 --> 00:13:11.279
Oh, cool.
00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:18.000
You know, when before when we we went in '86, you know, we had traded for John Tonelli and we had Doug Risebrow.
00:13:18.080 --> 00:13:18.399
Yeah.
00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:29.360
Um and uh they had won before, and that was kind of a Cliff's kind of you know mentorship of bringing those guys in to show us the way and and uh teach us how it was all about.
00:13:29.440 --> 00:13:34.399
So when we lost in 85, 86 to Montreal, we were fully prepared the next time.
00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:35.279
Yeah.
00:13:35.519 --> 00:13:37.919
That's that team, like six Hall of Famers.
00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:42.879
Am I did I count that right in terms of who who who won uh like looking back at that Flames team?
00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:47.039
I mean, it comes up from time to time, but like that was a stacked roster.
00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:48.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:50.399
And I, you know, you had Cliff Fletcher in there as well.
00:13:50.559 --> 00:13:50.799
Yeah.
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:54.639
Um, and uh, you know, it had the best right wing in hockey.
00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:57.759
You had Lanny McDonald had had scored 50 goals.
00:13:57.840 --> 00:13:59.919
You have 450 goal scores on right wing.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:09.600
You had Lanny scored 66, Loube had scored 50, Mullen had scored 50, and of course I scored 62 in my career.
00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:10.720
You did.
00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:12.559
60 goal scores.
00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:15.200
Well played, well played.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:23.200
Uh Timmy, you gotta ask about the the journey to the NHL, the three years that you played prior to making it.
00:14:23.360 --> 00:14:32.960
I whenever I'm at an alumni event, I love asking the guys who played in the jungle back in the the early 80s, mid 80s what those seasons were like.
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:38.480
You had three years of a couple hundred pims a season, but um give us a couple of thoughts.
00:14:38.559 --> 00:14:40.080
I know you have a couple of great stories.
00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:46.320
Everybody does from that time while you were trying to to crack that lineup, which you finally did in '83.
00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:48.960
Yeah, we all seem to have played a little bit in the minors.
00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:49.919
Yeah, we did.
00:14:50.080 --> 00:14:55.519
Uh I have more stories from my first two years pro than the next 15.
00:14:56.480 --> 00:14:57.919
I kid you not.
00:14:58.159 --> 00:14:58.720
I do.
00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:01.919
Like the it's it's it's it's great.
00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:03.519
It's a great learning experience.
00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:06.879
It's totally dysfunctional in a lot of ways.
00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:19.600
Um, you know, we were we were just coming out of the WHA days uh with the Oilers, Hartford, Winnipeg, you know, and I'm my first year I'm in Birmingham, Birmingham, baby bulls, Birmingham Bulls.
00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:20.000
Yeah.
00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:22.159
So they're the farm team for the Flames.
00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:24.879
They were prior to the Atlanta Flames.
00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:30.080
And I go from Calgary all the way to Birmingham for my Birmingham, Alabama.
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:30.720
Yeah.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:37.279
And it was, you know, it was really a great experience uh living in the South, totally different culture.
00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:55.759
Um, and then the hockey, uh, there was a lot of guys uh still hanging on that had played in the WHA, a lot of guys that, you know, you know, uh Hansen Brothers, Carlson Brothers, uh played in the WHA, and John Brofe was my coach.
00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:56.720
Oh, I've heard of him.
00:15:58.639 --> 00:16:02.240
Brofe is is an animal legendary.
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:14.399
I heard uh Zena Kanopka played with for him in Richmond, and he had two exact same stories he told that Brofe pulled uh during his playing days with Brofe.
00:16:14.639 --> 00:16:20.480
Now you go back probably 10 years prior or 15 years prior to that, where I'm playing with Brofe, he did the same thing.
00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:23.360
You know, he's just a total nut bar.
00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:26.639
And and but you know, um what would he do?
00:16:27.200 --> 00:16:32.639
Well, he he had he he just had this love for me because he knew he knew I was really tough.
00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:36.960
I had played junior 200 two two years with 300 penalty minutes.
00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:38.720
I was the toughest guy in the Western Hockey League.
00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:51.600
I did what I wanted, and and now, you know, Cliff kind of told me you might give it you might play left wing, a little seventh defenseman, you know, a little bit of a rover if you play in the NHL, but I never played any forward in the minors.
00:16:51.679 --> 00:16:53.840
I get called up and played my first game left wing.
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:59.120
But so Brofi had me hitting a speed bag with Frank uh never beaten.
00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:00.240
Is Frank beaten?
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:05.119
And and Brofi was always you know, yeah, yeah.
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:10.480
No, I always well by the end it was kind of seldom beaten, but uh he was one tough dude.
00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:18.720
And Frankie was he showed me the ropes and how to how to do the job, like you protect your teammates and how to go out and handle things.
00:17:18.799 --> 00:17:25.839
And and you know, Brofi said to me one day, he says, uh Timmy, I think there's two ways you're gonna play in the NHL.
00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:33.599
That's number one is being the meanest mother in the Central Hockey League, or number two, being the best defensive in the central hockey league.
00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:35.359
I think you're gonna pick number one.
00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:41.759
I said I said, Oh, I said, bro, how about we we try for both?
00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:43.279
He said, good luck.
00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:51.599
So and he always he always seemed to have these um backhanded comments, you know, thrown my way.
00:17:51.759 --> 00:18:06.480
And um, but the first time, you know, I had a couple guys that played on that team, Ralph Andreessen and Jace Soloway, and they just really couldn't stand his tirades, his is you know, Neanderthal kind of coaching.
00:18:06.799 --> 00:18:10.960
But, you know, and I'd call my dad, and my dad would say, like, what's he what do you mean?
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:14.720
I saw the F-bombs and Hunter, you're this and that, and blah, blah, blah.
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:18.240
And he goes, Listen, you're not gonna play for this guy forever.
00:18:18.480 --> 00:18:23.759
But in everything he's saying, it's motivation, and it's the only way he knows how to motivate.
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:25.279
So there's a message.
00:18:25.440 --> 00:18:28.079
Find the message and put it to use.
00:18:28.559 --> 00:18:32.400
Get the older guys, get the older guys to explain to you what he's saying.
00:18:32.720 --> 00:18:34.720
You know, uh being a right defenseman.
00:18:34.880 --> 00:18:43.759
I came around the net one one game early in the season, first couple of games, and the right winger's dead available, and I was gonna pass to him, but I I'm looking up the middle and there's sentiment.
00:18:43.920 --> 00:18:45.119
I'm he's just cutting across.
00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:46.559
I'm thinking, oh, I can hit him.
00:18:46.720 --> 00:18:51.440
I pass it to him, boom, the pot, the puck gets picked off, scoring chance.
00:18:51.519 --> 00:18:52.960
I come back to the branch bench.
00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:55.759
Brofi comes flying down to the end of the bench.
00:18:55.920 --> 00:19:03.440
He's he's got this, he's got this, his his head is beat red, his hair fire, he's breathing fire.
00:19:03.599 --> 00:19:07.119
Honey, you're no Mona Lisa, pass the puck.
00:19:08.480 --> 00:19:14.079
And I'm like, I said, I said, uh, so he he's he's screaming and I he walks away.
00:19:14.160 --> 00:19:16.799
And I said the gourd, I go, who's the Mona Lisa?
00:19:17.920 --> 00:19:21.119
He goes, Timmy, you know, I'm a dumb 19-year-old kid.
00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:25.920
He goes, Timmy, Timmy, Timmy, not every pass has to be a masterpiece.
00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:26.960
Pass the puck.
00:19:27.039 --> 00:19:30.960
Come around the net, you see the first guy available, pass it right away, quick.
00:19:31.039 --> 00:19:31.279
Yeah.
00:19:31.440 --> 00:19:35.839
So years later, we were in the in the Louvre in uh Paris, and I saw the Mona Lisa.
00:19:35.920 --> 00:19:39.680
I took a picture, I text Gordon, I said, Gordon, finally found the Mona Lisa.
00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:42.960
Oh, that's funny.
00:19:43.359 --> 00:19:45.200
You know, oh, that's awesome.
00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:46.720
Just just stuff like that.
00:19:46.799 --> 00:19:54.799
And and you know, uh, we're playing a game in in Tulsa, and Winnipeg had sent down Jimmy Mann, one of the tough guys.
00:19:55.200 --> 00:19:55.759
Very tough guy.
00:19:56.559 --> 00:19:57.440
First round pick.
00:19:57.519 --> 00:20:02.640
So I I I I beat him up in the first period, and I had and I fought Rick Bonus.
00:20:02.720 --> 00:20:04.720
It did really well against Rick Bonus.
00:20:04.960 --> 00:20:08.160
And we come in between periods and we're losing like 3-1.
00:20:08.640 --> 00:20:13.759
He comes in the room, he goes, he looks around the room and he spots me, he goes, Hunter, when?
00:20:14.400 --> 00:20:17.440
When the f are you gonna do something for this hockey team?
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:21.279
And I'm like, uh, geez, I just thought I did.
00:20:21.839 --> 00:20:22.640
I didn't say that.
00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:23.680
I didn't say that.
00:20:24.640 --> 00:20:27.440
And then he's he slams the door and he leaves.
00:20:27.599 --> 00:20:34.240
And and and uh and I'm going, oh, and all the guys going, Hans, you are the only guy doing something.
00:20:36.079 --> 00:20:40.240
You know, and it was it was it was, you know, and everyone stuck up for me.
00:20:40.319 --> 00:20:46.720
But so later on, team's getting ready to fold, and we're not making any money, and you know, so rumors are gonna be able to do it.
00:20:46.799 --> 00:20:48.960
And Tim, you're like what, 21, 20 years old around this?
00:20:49.200 --> 00:20:49.839
20 years old, yeah.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:51.200
19, just turned 20.
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:52.480
I was 20 in September.
00:20:52.880 --> 00:21:15.759
00:21:19.119 --> 00:21:20.000
Oh, that's funny.
00:21:20.160 --> 00:21:23.200
And I'm like, You're catching these all over the place.
00:21:23.440 --> 00:21:25.519
So, where did that come from?
00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:32.000
So every time I see the Chicago Blackhawk bubble, I go, at my pocket, I get a couple royalties.
00:21:32.319 --> 00:21:43.519
And they were funny as it was, they were my favorite team because I loved Keith Magnus, because he was like me, right defenseman, number three, tough as nails, and he could play.
00:21:43.680 --> 00:21:46.559
So it was like, God, bro, how'd you know?
00:21:46.799 --> 00:21:58.000
So, so, anyways, the team team finally folds and they have a Meyer League dispersal draft, and they're they're uh Montreal gets the first two selections.
00:21:58.079 --> 00:21:59.200
And we're like, how's this happening?
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:02.400
Picked me first selection off the team.
00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:03.519
I'm the guy they wanted.
00:22:03.599 --> 00:22:06.240
And then they took my defense partner, Gord Whopple.
00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:07.920
We're picked.
00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:08.799
I go, Whoops.
00:22:08.880 --> 00:22:09.759
I said, Aren't you excited?
00:22:09.839 --> 00:22:13.119
We're going to Halifax, to the Halifa, the Nova Scotia Voyager.
00:22:13.359 --> 00:22:15.039
He goes, Hans, it's the armpit of Canada.
00:22:15.119 --> 00:22:16.160
Do you really want to go there?
00:22:16.319 --> 00:22:17.680
It's 75 degrees out.
00:22:17.839 --> 00:22:19.359
We're laying by the pool.
00:22:20.319 --> 00:22:23.680
I said, Well, I'm thinking more hockey terms, Gord.
00:22:23.839 --> 00:22:26.160
You know, like, you know, it's a good place to play hockey.
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:27.440
He goes, I don't know about that.
00:22:27.519 --> 00:22:30.000
I heard that Bert Templeton's not much of a coach.
00:22:30.640 --> 00:22:32.000
So he's setting us.
00:22:32.160 --> 00:22:38.640
So, anyways, newspaper comes out the next day, Birmingham, whatever it's called, Herald or whatever.
00:22:38.799 --> 00:22:47.200
And uh headlines, um, Hunter, first player chosen from Birmingham Bulls in the minor minor league uh dispersal draft.
00:22:47.359 --> 00:22:48.480
John Brophy.
00:22:48.880 --> 00:22:52.480
Three months ago, there wasn't a team in hockey that wanted Tim Hunter.
00:22:52.960 --> 00:23:04.000
But through his hard work, his dedication, and how tough a motherfucker he is, no, he didn't say he said, and uh that's why he was taken first.
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:06.720
So there was another backhanded backhanded comment.
00:23:07.279 --> 00:23:08.400
Compliment, yeah.
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:11.279
What Timmy, did I hear it right?
00:23:11.359 --> 00:23:13.599
You you you didn't, and I don't want to interrupt.
00:23:13.759 --> 00:23:15.839
You every game you played in the minors, you were D.
00:23:15.920 --> 00:23:17.599
You didn't play forward until you got called up.
00:23:17.839 --> 00:23:19.359
I never played a game in forward in.
00:23:19.759 --> 00:23:20.640
Oh, I didn't know that.
00:23:20.960 --> 00:23:26.240
Two years, and then and then I get um I played in Calgary till January.
00:23:26.319 --> 00:23:31.039
I played only played 16 games my third year, and I because I only played 16 games.
00:23:31.119 --> 00:23:40.319
Like I probably played, was I probably dressed for about 25 games, but you know, uh Badger Bob, he he wouldn't give me a shift.
00:23:40.880 --> 00:23:45.119
Lanny, Lanny and Lanny and those guys are going, Bob, you can't not play Tim Hunter.
00:23:45.599 --> 00:23:49.519
You know, we go, we're in Chicago or Philadelphia, and I don't get a shift.
00:23:49.599 --> 00:23:51.680
They're going, this is where you play Tim Hunter.
00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:53.519
You know, Bob didn't quite know that.
00:23:53.599 --> 00:23:57.920
Yeah, so I get called up my first game, um, and I played forward.
00:23:58.000 --> 00:24:03.119
So then I played forward from training camp till January, sent me to the miners.
00:24:03.200 --> 00:24:06.720
I go to Colorado, played for Pierre Page, and I played defense.
00:24:06.960 --> 00:24:10.319
So it was like, holy mackerel, like what am I what am I gonna do?
00:24:10.480 --> 00:24:12.559
I would have loved to have been a defensive in the NHL.
00:24:12.640 --> 00:24:13.759
I just wasn't a good enough skater.
00:24:13.920 --> 00:24:21.440
I improved my forward skating, but I just couldn't, you know, something about those open hip turns just I couldn't get her done.
00:24:23.519 --> 00:24:24.640
Fair enough.
00:24:25.440 --> 00:24:28.240
Can I throw uh your time in Vancouver?
00:24:28.319 --> 00:24:35.920
You you came a game away with uh from winning another Stanley Cup in just an absolute epic series between the Rangers and Canucks in '94.
00:24:36.400 --> 00:24:40.960
But I I guess I'd be curious what was that team like?
00:24:41.119 --> 00:24:43.599
And is there a good Pavel Burray story?
00:24:43.839 --> 00:24:51.599
Because people who talk about playing against Peak Power, Pavel, or playing with him was just there was just another level at that time, Tim.
00:24:52.160 --> 00:24:54.960
Yeah, and he was really just coming into his own.
00:24:55.200 --> 00:25:01.519
And uh the my number one job in practice was to never get paired up with him in a race.
00:25:03.359 --> 00:25:04.400
Way away.
00:25:05.680 --> 00:25:09.599
Because Pat Quinn would have gone, holy Jesus guys, really slow.
00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:12.799
I had Pat Quinn fooled.
00:25:12.880 --> 00:25:14.880
I didn't want him to see how really slow I was.
00:25:15.039 --> 00:25:18.240
You know, I was 35 at the time or 32 at the time.
00:25:18.400 --> 00:25:25.359
Um, I my my whole thing with Vancouver was um the ownership there, Griffiths family.
00:25:25.519 --> 00:25:27.680
Um you know it's really funny.
00:25:27.759 --> 00:25:34.480
I I'd go like join the team on the road, played some road games in LA and what have you, and then fly back to Vancouver.
00:25:34.960 --> 00:25:44.880
I'm staying in some rented duplot plex and renfru street over by the Coliseum, and and we get this invite to the the owner's uh place over in West Van.
00:25:45.119 --> 00:25:51.759
They own a little island, you know, you got a little road out to this little island in West Van by Horseshoe Bay, it's just beautiful property.
00:25:51.920 --> 00:25:58.480
They've got a blackfin 50-foot yacht in their in their kitchen where the boathouse is, you know, it's just amazing.
00:25:58.720 --> 00:26:04.960
So, anyways, I go I go, I'm the first guy there, and I get have a taxi drop me off, and I'm like, am I in the right place?
00:26:05.440 --> 00:26:13.359
Huge doors, huge doors, and I and I I knock on the door, and and the door slowly opens.
00:26:13.519 --> 00:26:28.960
It's really slow, and there's this tiny little lady standing there, she's like five feet tall, and she's looking at me, and she's got this scowl on her face, and I'm going, Oh my god, I've never been terrified of anyone in my life, and I'm terrified of an 85-year-old woman.
00:26:29.519 --> 00:26:35.039
She might not have been 85, but she was older, and and I'm going, she's looking at me, she puts her hands out.
00:26:35.359 --> 00:26:38.880
You, you, I used to hate your guts.
00:26:39.359 --> 00:26:39.839
I love you.
00:26:40.480 --> 00:26:41.759
She gives me a big hug.
00:26:42.079 --> 00:26:42.880
I was horrified.
00:26:42.960 --> 00:26:44.960
I was going, holy Mrs.
00:26:45.119 --> 00:26:45.759
Griffith.
00:26:46.400 --> 00:26:47.680
Hi, how are you, Emily?
00:26:47.759 --> 00:26:48.160
Nice to meet you.
00:26:48.400 --> 00:26:48.799
200.
00:26:49.039 --> 00:26:49.200
Yeah.
00:26:49.279 --> 00:26:50.480
Oh, I know who you are.
00:26:50.720 --> 00:26:51.680
Come on in.
00:26:52.079 --> 00:26:53.759
So, you know, it was great.
00:26:53.839 --> 00:27:00.240
And and uh Frank, uh, they treated us great, and and then right from the top, and then Pat Quinn.
00:27:00.960 --> 00:27:03.920
He was by far my favorite coach.
00:27:04.079 --> 00:27:15.119
Um, a lot of coaches try to do what a guy like Pat does, and that's hand the team to the players and let them manage themselves and police themselves.
00:27:15.599 --> 00:27:22.079
And we had such a, you know, not unlike our team in Calgary, so many character guys, so many guys that could be leaders.
00:27:22.480 --> 00:27:27.440
You know, Trevor, Dave Babbage, Yerky Loomey, um, all those guys.
00:27:29.279 --> 00:27:31.440
Courtney, yeah, we had both Courtney's at one time.
00:27:31.599 --> 00:27:34.079
Cliffy, Cliffy, what a great player he was.
00:27:34.240 --> 00:27:42.880
And, you know, I just love taking in care of Cliffey because you know, he was so competitive and he just needed a little bit of a little bit of help now and again, and and it was great.
00:27:42.960 --> 00:27:49.920
But you know, Pat put that team together kind of, you know, we we finished uh last in the in the in our division.
00:27:50.079 --> 00:27:59.839
Calgary was the top dog, and we beat them in the first round, and and we but we were coming on, you know, he made some trades, you know, the Courtney, the Momesso.
00:28:00.319 --> 00:28:02.720
And then, you know, we're we're and Cliff was great.
00:28:02.799 --> 00:28:04.799
Um calls me in his office one day.
00:28:04.960 --> 00:28:06.000
Have a seat, have a seat.
00:28:06.079 --> 00:28:10.480
Um hey, uh that guy there you had at your house in Calgary when you played there.
00:28:10.559 --> 00:28:15.200
Uh he he was a rookie, came in overweight, uh um left defenseman.
00:28:15.279 --> 00:28:16.160
He's going like this.
00:28:16.319 --> 00:28:17.759
I'm going, oh, Brian Glenn.
00:28:17.920 --> 00:28:18.640
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:28:18.799 --> 00:28:20.640
He's on waivers in Ottawa.
00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:21.200
What do you think?
00:28:21.359 --> 00:28:23.920
I said, Yeah, we're gonna need eight defensemen.
00:28:24.160 --> 00:28:24.799
Pick him up.
00:28:25.119 --> 00:28:25.920
Great kid.
00:28:26.079 --> 00:28:26.880
Uh, he can play.
00:28:26.960 --> 00:28:30.160
He's not super tough, um, but he can play.
00:28:30.240 --> 00:28:33.440
He may not look like a stellar athlete, but the guy can play.
00:28:35.039 --> 00:28:36.319
You know, go ahead, pick him up.
00:28:36.400 --> 00:28:36.960
Great, great.
00:28:37.039 --> 00:28:38.160
He goes, hold on a second.
00:28:38.240 --> 00:28:42.400
He said, little guy he's in Quebec, uh, left shot, winger, fast guy, French guy.
00:28:42.559 --> 00:28:45.039
Um uh Marty Jellin.
00:28:45.279 --> 00:28:45.920
Yeah, that's the guy.
00:28:46.000 --> 00:28:46.880
Uh, should we pick him up?
00:28:46.960 --> 00:28:48.160
I go, yeah, oh, I love Marty.
00:28:48.240 --> 00:28:52.000
Marty can fly, he can play, he's got he's he's real versatile, kill penalties.
00:28:52.160 --> 00:28:52.480
Sure.
00:28:52.720 --> 00:28:53.599
Okay, beat it.
00:28:53.759 --> 00:28:58.240
You know, and and Cliff was uh, I mean, Pat was just amazing like that.
00:28:58.319 --> 00:29:09.920
He just uh um trusted guys, he'd call you in, have all the players sit around the the leaders sit around the desk, throw a case of beer on the thing, okay, what's going on?
00:29:10.240 --> 00:29:23.119
And I I when I first got there, they I told my agent, I was on waivers, I forced Quebec to put me on waivers, and I was on waivers, and it was Minnesota, Vancouver, and uh San Jose were interested.
00:29:23.200 --> 00:29:26.799
And and I told my agent, I said, I can think I can help Vancouver.
00:29:26.960 --> 00:29:32.160
I think Gino could use a little bit of help, and they could use more toughness.
00:29:32.400 --> 00:29:36.960
Um and so right away, Pat put me with uh Gino as a roommate.
00:29:37.119 --> 00:29:38.640
So I roomed with Gino for a couple years.
00:29:43.599 --> 00:29:52.079
Well, Gino was Gino was a fantastic kid, and and I'll tell you what, he he is so adored in in Vancouver and BC amongst the fans.
00:29:52.960 --> 00:29:55.119
He's a legend in that uh community.
00:29:55.279 --> 00:30:00.880
And and but Gino is just young, and but his favorite guy, their pals, was Pavel.
00:30:01.279 --> 00:30:10.799
And like I had always go, come on, Gino, let's go out and pound some paper and have some beer and you know, go go uh get some dinner, and all the guys are going up, no, no, no, partner, uh, I'm gonna go, you know.
00:30:10.960 --> 00:30:14.640
Uh and he'd end up with Pavel, and they they'd have their fun.
00:30:14.799 --> 00:30:24.960
And so I finally said to Pat, I said, you know, Pat, and this is in during one of these meetings, I said, I think we should put uh Pavel back with uh Gino back with Pavel.
00:30:25.279 --> 00:30:26.960
Oh, I don't know about that.
00:30:27.119 --> 00:30:30.400
I said, listen, they're the happiest when they're together.
00:30:30.559 --> 00:30:34.000
And I explained, I said, they never, you know, they they they just hang out together.
00:30:34.160 --> 00:30:38.640
I said, they're always happy, they're like little kids out in the ice, and I think, I think it's better for them.
00:30:38.799 --> 00:30:42.480
He says, Okay, so you he says pointing at me, you take care of this.
00:30:42.640 --> 00:30:44.000
And they were never a problem.
00:30:44.240 --> 00:30:48.400
They were never a problem, you know, because I told him, I said, Gino, don't get in trouble.
00:30:49.200 --> 00:30:58.240
I know, I know your your your your worst nightmare is having a room with a 31-year-old guy, and you're 21, and I'm not doing the things you're doing.
00:31:00.319 --> 00:31:08.480
So, but Gina was great, and Pat, you know, but uh you know, Pat Pat was the guy that uh we uh we just love playing for Pat.
00:31:08.720 --> 00:31:16.240
Uh uh it was just a special thing, and and and some of the I have my some of my best stories in the NHL from playing for Pat.
00:31:16.319 --> 00:31:16.799
You know, I don't know.
00:31:16.880 --> 00:31:18.799
I commented a true leader, right, Tim?
00:31:18.880 --> 00:31:21.759
Like yeah, he was just an alpha when he walked into the room.
00:31:21.839 --> 00:31:26.319
Like there's certain people just kind of have that sort of presidential prime minister type feel.
00:31:26.400 --> 00:31:28.720
Pat Quinn was that kind of guy, in my opinion.
00:31:29.039 --> 00:31:29.599
Presence.
00:31:29.759 --> 00:31:30.559
Yeah, presence.
00:31:30.799 --> 00:31:31.519
That's what he had.
00:31:31.759 --> 00:31:34.079
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, for sure.
00:31:34.720 --> 00:31:37.680
Tim, I mean, 3,100 penalty minutes, I'd be remiss if I didn't.
00:31:37.759 --> 00:31:39.440
I don't think we've ever asked you this either.
00:31:39.599 --> 00:31:42.720
I mean, I I know there's a ton you fought literally everybody.
00:31:42.799 --> 00:31:43.359
I understand.
00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:56.720
Is there like somebody that was there a name that would like sticks out looking back that was like maybe gave you a I don't know, maybe a little bit of trouble or something you were a little uh like a little leery of, maybe a little bit, like somebody that stands out from the past at all.
00:31:57.039 --> 00:31:57.680
John Brophy.
00:31:57.920 --> 00:31:59.200
Somewhere in those 3100.
00:32:00.640 --> 00:32:05.839
You know, you never took anyone lightly, everyone was capable, and it only takes one punch.
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:17.599
Um, I would say uh the two toughest, and I only fought him twice, and once was I was dumb, I didn't realize it, but um the first time was it was was uh Bob Probert.
00:32:17.680 --> 00:32:30.000
Oh and I fought him in Detroit, and he was early in his career, and I only played four or five years, and and I hit him as hard as I ever hit anyone with a punch, and he didn't even flinch.
00:32:30.480 --> 00:32:32.640
And I just I just went, uh oh, uh-oh.
00:32:33.440 --> 00:32:34.319
This is not good.
00:32:34.480 --> 00:32:35.359
That's not good.
00:32:35.599 --> 00:32:37.519
I just gave him everything I got.
00:32:37.839 --> 00:32:41.680
And and and he swung and for the fences, and and I docked him.
00:32:41.759 --> 00:32:43.920
We spun into the ice and went, thank God.
00:32:44.160 --> 00:32:47.119
And so then I fought him again in Quebec.
00:32:47.599 --> 00:33:11.359
00:33:11.839 --> 00:33:14.720
He's laying on the ice and Probert skates by.
00:33:14.960 --> 00:33:19.359
I'm going, oh geez, I gotta answer this guy right at home, man.
00:33:20.240 --> 00:33:22.480
And Probert hadn't played in Canada.
00:33:22.640 --> 00:33:24.720
He played two nights earlier in Montreal.
00:33:24.880 --> 00:33:27.119
We're the second guy he played in six months.
00:33:27.200 --> 00:33:31.599
He'd been suspended for some infraction of doing something.
00:33:31.920 --> 00:33:33.599
Yeah, he wasn't allowed in Canada for a bit.
00:33:33.680 --> 00:33:34.640
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:33:34.799 --> 00:33:36.960
So I'm going, oh boy, caged animal.
00:33:37.039 --> 00:33:37.920
Now I gotta go fight him.
00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:42.640
So I go right across the ice and I cross-check him, and he's looking at me like, what are you doing?
00:33:42.799 --> 00:33:45.519
And I'm thinking, uh, what am I doing?
00:33:46.960 --> 00:33:54.079
Thank God the referees, the linesman got in, and I go to the penalty box and I'm in the penalty box and I'm going, clock's ticking down.
00:33:54.160 --> 00:33:58.079
I look across the ice and there's Probert calling off the left winger.
00:33:58.160 --> 00:33:58.880
He wants to get on.
00:33:58.960 --> 00:34:02.400
So when I come off the out of the penalty box, he's gonna attack me.
00:34:02.640 --> 00:34:08.000
Comes flying across the ice right to my get my stick out to get myself a little bit of room because he's gonna kill me.
00:34:09.760 --> 00:34:12.400
And and you probably could watch the fight.
00:34:12.639 --> 00:34:13.599
I don't do so good.
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:16.400
I don't get, you know, no one ever skated away from me.
00:34:16.559 --> 00:34:19.599
And I was laying there, they just skated away and kind of went like this.
00:34:19.760 --> 00:34:22.719
No one, but he he did a pretty good job.
00:34:22.880 --> 00:34:28.559
And I I was in, you know, it was it was tough, tough sledding, so so to speak.
00:34:28.639 --> 00:34:30.880
Um it again.
00:34:31.119 --> 00:34:31.599
Yeah, yeah.
00:34:31.679 --> 00:34:40.639
So the best part is is period Ans are going the in the in the dressing room, and the guys are going, Hans, why why'd you fight Proby?
00:34:40.960 --> 00:34:42.639
I go, Well, he ran over Huffer.
00:34:42.719 --> 00:34:44.400
Oh no, that was somebody else.
00:34:46.320 --> 00:34:47.679
You got the wrong guy.
00:34:47.920 --> 00:34:49.119
I got the wrong guy.
00:34:49.760 --> 00:34:51.199
All the wrong guys to get, too.
00:34:51.760 --> 00:34:55.119
No, no, no wonder he's looking at me like, what are you doing?
00:34:57.440 --> 00:34:59.039
Oh, that's funny.
00:34:59.760 --> 00:35:03.440
Yeah, I mean, uh, you know, and I tell people Tim, who was the other?
00:35:03.519 --> 00:35:04.000
Who was the other?
00:35:04.079 --> 00:35:05.440
You said Probert was one.
00:35:05.920 --> 00:35:07.039
Who was the other guy?
00:35:07.360 --> 00:35:11.119
Well, I and I I I get asked the this question the most.
00:35:11.280 --> 00:35:15.599
The two questions I get asked the most are who's the toughest guy you ever fought?
00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:18.079
And how many times you broke your nose?
00:35:19.519 --> 00:35:21.119
So we're not gonna ask that, Tim.
00:35:21.280 --> 00:35:23.199
We're both even on my radar.
00:35:24.400 --> 00:35:24.960
It's all good.
00:35:25.039 --> 00:35:31.920
If you've ever seen my mother, my aunt, my two uncles, you'll know that I have their nose or they have my nose, and they never played a game in the NFL.
00:35:33.280 --> 00:35:39.360
Um, so and I didn't know it at the time, but I fought Nick Fatillo in New York.
00:35:39.519 --> 00:35:39.760
First time.
00:35:40.159 --> 00:35:41.679
Oh, yeah, yeah, there's a name.
00:35:42.000 --> 00:35:45.679
Yeah, Nick was really he was intimidating, no helmet.
00:35:45.840 --> 00:35:50.480
He had these big Popeye forearms, his shirt was rolled up, tiny little gloves.
00:35:50.559 --> 00:35:52.719
He was just like ready to kill.
00:35:52.880 --> 00:35:58.960
And so I beat up Don Maloney, and then later in the game, I hadn't, you know, the third period.
00:35:59.039 --> 00:36:01.599
I played a few, and then I never saw Nick.
00:36:01.679 --> 00:36:04.400
I'm going, holy mackerel, I'm gonna get out of here alive.
00:36:04.480 --> 00:36:06.159
I'm not gonna have to deal with this guy.
00:36:06.800 --> 00:36:14.159
Well, we score and go up by two or three goals late in the game, and Bob Johnson's our coach again, a guy that doesn't know the tough guy part.
00:36:14.239 --> 00:36:27.119
And they have they have Herb Brooks, college coaches, really doesn't know the tough guy game, or maybe he does, because we score, Bob throws me out, so Herb throws out Nick, and I'm going, damn, not gonna get out of here alive.
00:36:27.199 --> 00:36:28.480
He's gonna kill me.
00:36:29.840 --> 00:36:40.159
So we face off, and just as the puck drops, Nick spears me right inside the top of my leg in that real tender area.
00:36:40.239 --> 00:36:47.519
Yeah, just misses all the stuff, and I'm like, I go down, I'm going, okay, just stay down.
00:36:47.679 --> 00:36:50.480
He's gonna get a spearing penalty, and you won't have to fight him.
00:36:50.719 --> 00:36:51.840
This is going through my mind.
00:36:51.920 --> 00:36:57.360
I'm going, no, I'm young and dumb, and I get up and I'm and Nick's giving me this.
00:36:57.519 --> 00:36:58.719
Come here, I'm gonna kill you.
00:36:58.800 --> 00:37:01.599
So I drop my gloves, I take a step towards Nick.
00:37:01.760 --> 00:37:03.440
He grabs me and pulls me in.
00:37:03.679 --> 00:37:08.000
As he's pulling me, he's throwing a punch and he hit me on the helmet.
00:37:08.800 --> 00:37:11.519
And Bear Cat's still looking for the helmet today.
00:37:11.599 --> 00:37:12.719
It flew off my head.
00:37:12.800 --> 00:37:14.079
I don't know where it went.
00:37:14.719 --> 00:37:21.119
It's it was like, and we wrestled around, it wasn't much of a fight, and I'm going, oh, thank God, I got out of here alive.
00:37:21.599 --> 00:37:25.199
But that wasn't the moment where I knew Nick was the toughest guy.
00:37:25.360 --> 00:37:29.440
So years later, playing in Calgary, and Nick had joined Calgary.
00:37:29.519 --> 00:37:33.119
We're looking for some help to, you know, we had those guys up the highway.
00:37:33.199 --> 00:37:37.199
They had five or six of them that myself and Pep and Ots had to fight.
00:37:37.360 --> 00:37:42.000
Yeah, and so we had Nick, and but Nick hadn't fought, so he was like, We're all everyone's waiting.
00:37:42.079 --> 00:37:43.679
Like, when's this guy gonna kill somebody?
00:37:43.760 --> 00:37:45.119
You know, like show us what we can do.
00:37:45.360 --> 00:37:48.639
Yeah, so we're in Vancouver and we're playing, and they had Craig Cox.
00:37:48.800 --> 00:37:49.360
Yeah.
00:37:49.679 --> 00:37:54.800
And Coxy, you know, Coxy's this big Southern California surfer dude.
00:37:55.039 --> 00:37:58.400
And I skate down, we're in the Khan, and he skates over him.
00:37:58.559 --> 00:38:00.800
He goes, Hey Hunts, you wanna go?
00:38:01.199 --> 00:38:04.719
In this surfer dude language, and I'm going, sure, man.
00:38:06.239 --> 00:38:08.239
We square off and we're getting ready to fight.
00:38:08.320 --> 00:38:10.480
And this big hand comes in and pushes me out of the way.
00:38:10.559 --> 00:38:12.800
It's Nick, he goes, Hunts, I'll take care of this guy.
00:38:12.960 --> 00:38:15.519
So they're squaring off, and Nick just goes, boom.
00:38:15.679 --> 00:38:20.880
Like the number one thing, like Nick's a golden glove boxing chat, is okay to disguise your punch.
00:38:21.039 --> 00:38:28.480
And he just snapped it out there, hit Coxy in the in the left cheek, and just caved the whole side of his face in.
00:38:28.559 --> 00:38:29.039
Oh man.
00:38:29.199 --> 00:38:36.239
And I I was standing right there and looking at him two feet away, and I saw this big divot in the side of his face.
00:38:36.400 --> 00:38:40.320
I heard it was like taking a sledgehammer and hitting the side of beef.
00:38:40.559 --> 00:38:41.119
Side of beef.
00:38:41.199 --> 00:38:41.360
Yeah.
00:38:41.519 --> 00:38:51.920
And and he he hit him, and I'm like, that is the toughest guy I ever fought because that could have been me four years ago in Madison Square Gardens when I ducked.
00:38:52.159 --> 00:38:52.320
Right.
00:38:52.719 --> 00:38:54.000
Could have been my face.
00:38:54.960 --> 00:38:57.440
And and that was the power that Nick had.
00:38:57.599 --> 00:38:59.280
And I I could not believe it.
00:38:59.519 --> 00:39:00.719
He was a golden glove boxer.
00:39:00.880 --> 00:39:02.719
I knew he boxed, I didn't know golden gloves.
00:39:02.960 --> 00:39:06.400
He even had that look, Tim, that just looked a little out there on the ice.
00:39:06.880 --> 00:39:07.199
Oh, yeah.
00:39:07.440 --> 00:39:08.800
And with no helmet on, you know.
00:39:10.079 --> 00:39:17.360
He's still like I see uh Ranger uh alumni stuff, and I he he he looks like uh he looks like a hitman for the mafia.
00:39:19.199 --> 00:39:20.159
Yeah, he's got that look.
00:39:20.559 --> 00:39:21.599
That's kind of you, right?
00:39:21.920 --> 00:39:22.559
Yeah.
00:39:23.280 --> 00:39:25.199
Oh great stuff.
00:39:25.519 --> 00:39:26.239
Great stuff.
00:39:26.480 --> 00:39:30.639
Tim, what's your best other than the cup, what's your best National Hockey League moment?
00:39:31.119 --> 00:39:36.719
Uh just playing my first game and knowing knowing that I I got to the NHL to play.
00:39:36.800 --> 00:39:37.920
I played in the corral.
00:39:38.400 --> 00:39:50.480
Um, you know, you know, it was always the those great things, the uh the the older guys, they all, you know, take you under the wing and and tell you like hunts, just do your thing, play it.
00:39:50.559 --> 00:39:51.599
And I'm playing left wing.
00:39:51.679 --> 00:39:53.119
I'd never played left wing before.
00:39:53.280 --> 00:39:55.760
And I played with Guy Schonard, he set me up.
00:39:55.920 --> 00:40:00.559
If I could one time the puck, I would have scored, but I wasn't really good at one timing the puck.
00:40:01.119 --> 00:40:06.800
Especially on my off wing and getting my hips open because I couldn't turn anyways, because they open hip turn.
00:40:06.880 --> 00:40:09.519
And then I fought Glenn Cochran and did really well.
00:40:09.599 --> 00:40:15.760
And you know, again, those guys are saying hey hunts, like you know, Ben Wilson, Glenn Cochran, you know, like be careful.
00:40:15.920 --> 00:40:16.719
This guy does that.
00:40:17.280 --> 00:40:21.119
Cochrane comes over and then underneath, and I'm fighting Cochrane.
00:40:21.199 --> 00:40:23.760
I ran him through the boards, glass came out.
00:40:24.239 --> 00:40:25.039
He's not happy.
00:40:25.119 --> 00:40:26.960
So we was a big dude too, wasn't he?
00:40:27.119 --> 00:40:29.360
Oh, he was like Yeah, I think I met him in Kelowna.
00:40:29.760 --> 00:40:33.920
He was like 6'4, and I was only 6'2, and he was one of the biggest guys in the league at the time.
00:40:34.000 --> 00:40:42.239
And yeah, and this punch goes goes straight up, and I'm going, thank God I listened to Eric Vale, you know, Willie the Pl will Willie uh Plett.
00:40:42.400 --> 00:40:50.079
And uh um, but it was just just to have my family at the game and and uh just that experience, you know.
00:40:50.159 --> 00:40:57.440
And I mean there's lots of great moments just just having your playing your first game and you know, little things like scoring your first goal and and all that.
00:40:57.599 --> 00:41:01.440
You just kind of like you you've kind of made it, you've arrived.
00:41:01.599 --> 00:41:05.920
And I always thought that if I played one year, I'd play two.
00:41:06.079 --> 00:41:07.840
If I played two, I'd play five.
00:41:08.000 --> 00:41:10.800
If I played five, I'd played basically as long as I wanted.
00:41:10.960 --> 00:41:11.519
And I did.
00:41:11.599 --> 00:41:13.840
I got to play till I was 37.
00:41:14.239 --> 00:41:20.480
Um and I just had I retired on my terms, and it was I had a just a fantastic career.
00:41:20.559 --> 00:41:23.360
I just uh hell career.
00:41:23.840 --> 00:41:25.519
I got one more for you, Tim.
00:41:25.920 --> 00:41:27.360
I've never asked you this, I don't think.
00:41:27.440 --> 00:41:33.039
You coach for a long time, assistant in the NHL for years, and then six years as the head coach there in uh Moose Jaw, right?
00:41:33.199 --> 00:41:33.679
Yeah.
00:41:34.000 --> 00:41:36.639
Well, other so I mean you coached a long time.
00:41:36.800 --> 00:41:40.960
What would you say your favorite part of the job was, and what would your least favorite been?
00:41:41.039 --> 00:41:42.559
I don't think I've ever asked you that.
00:41:43.440 --> 00:41:49.840
Favorite part um was being allowed to be um an innovator.
00:41:50.000 --> 00:41:52.239
So Ron Wilson uh was my coach.
00:41:52.320 --> 00:42:09.280
I coached for Ron for 15 years, and Ron told me when I first started the job, he said, Listen, don't be a copycat and do what all the other assistant coaches did when you were playing, or whatever you see other assistant or you think the job should be done.
00:42:09.760 --> 00:42:12.880
Be an innovator, be an entrepreneur in your own position.
00:42:13.119 --> 00:42:18.880
So he says, and you know, if you try something and you it up, hockey players aren't that smart anyways.
00:42:19.119 --> 00:42:20.880
So they won't know, they won't know.
00:42:21.119 --> 00:42:21.920
They won't notice.
00:42:22.559 --> 00:42:23.440
Yeah, yeah.
00:42:23.679 --> 00:42:35.199
So um we we that got me going on looking for different ways and different things to to do drills, to to you know, have fun with the guys.
00:42:35.360 --> 00:42:45.920
Uh, you know, and I had another assistant that was started with Tim Army, and Tim Tim's in Anaheim and um long time assistant coach, a little head, bit of a head coach here and there.
00:42:46.079 --> 00:42:47.519
Um, but same thing.
00:42:47.679 --> 00:42:50.079
We started in Washington with digital video.
00:42:51.039 --> 00:43:10.000
Um, uh we we were the first team in the NHL to have a bench monitor, and so all that stuff, being being creative and and putting all that stuff together and using it in a real constructive way to be able to show your star players, you know, where sticks are in the power play when you fake there, go here, where did the sticks go?
00:43:10.079 --> 00:43:13.519
So you can no look and rink wide pass and things like that.
00:43:13.679 --> 00:43:16.960
You're able to show players and and teach them.
00:43:17.199 --> 00:43:25.679
Um, and then you know, transitioning from Washington to San Jose and then starting to take all that into another level.
00:43:26.000 --> 00:43:32.239
Um, you know, was that was that was probably that and and and a lot of the players.
00:43:32.320 --> 00:43:34.880
I I coached a lot of really good people.
00:43:35.440 --> 00:43:43.119
And uh, you know, you meet guys like Joe Thornton, you know, he inducted in the Holy Hall of Fame last year.
00:43:43.360 --> 00:43:46.239
And I was talking to Lanny, he said, What a guy.
00:43:46.400 --> 00:43:48.159
He's just the super guy.
00:43:48.320 --> 00:43:49.679
He's a man's man.
00:43:49.920 --> 00:43:52.559
He he was unbelievable to to coach.
00:43:52.639 --> 00:43:57.840
And he always came in early, he'd come in the coach's office and sit and have a coffee with us and just chew the fat.
00:43:58.079 --> 00:43:59.760
It wasn't so much about the game or hockey.
00:44:00.320 --> 00:44:01.199
just just hanging out.
00:44:01.599 --> 00:44:02.480
What are you guys doing now?
00:44:02.559 --> 00:44:03.039
What's going on?
00:44:03.440 --> 00:44:04.719
What's up with the bench monitor?
00:44:04.800 --> 00:46:07.199
00:46:07.519 --> 00:51:04.719
00:51:04.960 --> 00:52:33.119
00:52:33.360 --> 00:54:12.639
00:54:12.719 --> 00:54:22.239
Like I would have never had that otherwise you know for certain names that unless that player unless that name is an NHL player they weren't traditionally in there and they've kind of expanded it.
00:54:22.320 --> 00:54:25.679
So yeah it's a great story both of you guys so great question I love it.
00:54:26.960 --> 00:54:28.639
Yeah that's that's that's very good.
00:54:28.800 --> 00:54:32.000
Okay uh on that note let's uh wind this one down.
