O TYM ODCINKU
Abraham has just watched the smoke of Sodom rise and still, somehow, he falls back into the same old panic. Genesis 20 is one of those chapters that feels almost unbelievable until you recognize your own habits in it: fear-driven decisions, half-truths that hurt people, and the quiet hope that someone else will deal with the consequences.
We walk through the tense story of Abraham, Sarah, and Abimelech and ask what it reveals about marriage pressure, recurring sin patterns, and the difference between claiming faith and living with the fear of God. One of the surprises is how a Gentile ruler ends up acting with more integrity than the man carrying God’s promise. That reversal pushes us to examine our witness and consider how God sometimes uses “outsiders” to expose what we are missing.
Then we lean into a question many Christians still wrestle with: if God is sovereign, why pray? Genesis 20 ties real healing and restoration to Abraham’s prayer and reminds us that God ordains the ends and the means. We talk about how God protects, how he restrains sin, and how he still works through imperfect people without excusing their choices.

00:00:11.199 --> 00:00:13.199
And welcome back to a chapter of day.
00:00:13.439 --> 00:00:14.800
Keeps the devil away.
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:20.640
I'm Pastor Pleck, joined by none other than Pastor Holland Craig, and we're talking about Genesis chapter 20 today.
00:00:20.879 --> 00:00:23.679
Holland, what did you think about Genesis 20?
00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:28.160
It is quite a contrary viewpoint from Genesis 19, that's for sure.
00:00:28.399 --> 00:00:28.719
Yep.
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:38.399
Big, intense raining fire and sulfur, and now down to this kind of odd situation with Abraham and his wife that's uh a repeat of a previous situation.
00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:45.439
Yeah, and it's wild too that I feel like sexual morality was not something they quite conquered in the teens of Genesis.
00:00:45.679 --> 00:00:46.560
Correct.
00:00:46.960 --> 00:00:50.960
It's been a problem uh all throughout Genesis, continues to be a problem all throughout the Bible.
00:00:51.200 --> 00:00:59.439
You know, so you so if you wonder why we're having a problem with the tape, don't never say, let's go back to the good old days when people were wholly impure, because that was never a time.
00:00:59.920 --> 00:01:03.920
But it's uh it's really awesome and interesting how God intervenes in the situation.
00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:04.159
Yeah.
00:01:04.319 --> 00:01:15.760
And uh with with people, you know, not only intervenes for Abraham and Sarah's sake, but also even for, you know, the these kind of outsiders and uh Gentile rulers, right?
00:01:16.079 --> 00:01:19.920
Let's talk about the marriage dynamic of Abraham and Sarah.
00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:22.159
Like, listen, Sarah, I love you.
00:01:22.319 --> 00:01:26.319
But wherever we go, let's not pretend you're let's not tell anyone you're my wife.
00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:28.159
Let's just go with the sister line.
00:01:28.400 --> 00:01:29.519
That way no one will kill me.
00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:33.680
Now, I don't know what they'll do to you, but I'm sure they'll bless me because you are hot.
00:01:33.920 --> 00:01:36.959
Now, the other thing that's wild, she's like 90.
00:01:37.359 --> 00:01:37.680
Right.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:41.200
Like let's call it late, late 70s, 80s.
00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:42.239
Yeah, not quite 90s.
00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:42.879
Not quite 90s.
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:52.640
But she's like 75, 80 at this point, whenever she kind of hangs out at drawer, and you gotta go, what?
00:01:53.599 --> 00:01:58.159
Like, listen, maybe she just had some great uh skincare.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:02.079
And she was skincare, good jeans, great exercise, a lot of exercise.
00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:04.480
She ate right, she had a lot of fish, I'm sure.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:13.919
Like, I uh it was wild to me that like I mean, I don't know how many women in their late 70s, early 80s that I'm just like, man, there's nothing I can do.
00:02:14.159 --> 00:02:15.199
You must be mine.
00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:18.719
Yeah, but uh, you know, it's different times back then.
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:20.080
Could have been a lot of plastic surgery.
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:22.719
I just, you know, used to really God didn't put that in there.
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:23.199
I don't know.
00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:24.719
To me, I thought that was wild.
00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:26.560
I was like sort of shocked by that.
00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:39.360
Uh that she's late 70s, she's not a spring chicken, uh, and yet God has already promised to Abraham, even though he is very old, uh, that uh the promise will come through Sarah.
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:46.159
Now, the other thing about Sarah, because she's already done the thing with uh um Ishmael, right?
00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:46.639
Right.
00:02:46.879 --> 00:02:56.960
And so this, this Ishmael and Hagar are still with the family, but it's not like Abraham is worried about Sarah being thrown into the harem.
00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:00.960
Like he's, I mean, it's not like he's a small, like there aren't very many women.
00:03:01.039 --> 00:03:02.000
It's like the only one.
00:03:02.159 --> 00:03:10.000
It's like he is so worried that she is so beautiful that there's nothing this king will do but like I must kill you for your 75-year-old wife.
00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:10.719
Right.
00:03:10.879 --> 00:03:13.439
Like that is that is bonkers to me.
00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:14.879
Yeah, yeah.
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:20.560
Um what I what stands out to me about this though is the you know, it's the repeat episode.
00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:21.199
Yep.
00:03:21.360 --> 00:03:29.759
Um, and just the reality that we tend to commit the same sins over and over again, right?
00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:36.400
And so, like you see it in Abraham, and some I remember when, you know, when I first read this, I I read it and I was like, didn't I already read this before?
00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:40.479
And I had to go back and check, you know, um, the first first time I'm kind of going through Genesis.
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:52.639
It was Pharaoh the first time, and this time it's Abimelech, which means Abimelech, you guys know, is uh Malek is is king, Abby is father, so it's my father is king, uh, which is an interesting, yeah, whatever.
00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:54.400
It's just the name of the king.
00:03:54.719 --> 00:03:56.560
Yeah, and you know, I was like, didn't I read?
00:03:56.719 --> 00:03:59.199
And I was like, man, why would they include the same story two times?
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:09.840
And I was like, oh, he did the same thing two times, and it's just like a reminder of, you know, what we have we have these sin patterns and cycles and um things that we go back to.
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:24.879
And Abraham, you know, Abimelech is shown to be more righteous than Abraham here, and that he's, you know, he uh he doesn't want to do what's what's gonna be, you know, um uh wrong in God's eyes, and he he chooses to act in integrity and purity, he says.
00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:36.160
And you know, like it's just crazy to see this king acting in a more righteous way than Abraham, and Abraham, even though he's like God's chosen man, going back to the same sin again and again again.
00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:43.199
It it's it is wild, and this is why I'm wondering like what was the relationship between Abraham and Sarah?
00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:46.240
Were there some things from childhood that they just hadn't worked out yet?
00:04:46.319 --> 00:04:50.639
That he's just always trying to like, man, I just hope somebody just comes and takes her away so I can start all over.
00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:53.199
Like, I I don't know what it is, right?
00:04:53.279 --> 00:05:04.879
Like, I mean, if you've been promised by God, like you literally had angels show up and say to you with God, like God and two angels show up to you.
00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:05.600
Right.
00:05:06.319 --> 00:05:13.680
Like two chapters earlier, and they say, Hey, you're gonna have a son through Sarah, and then Sarah laughs and she said, No, you Sarah laughs.
00:05:13.759 --> 00:05:14.720
She's like, No, I didn't laugh.
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:25.120
Like that, that whole conversation just before this, and then he's like, Hey, I'm kind of nervous about getting killed by the king of this country because you're so beautiful.
00:05:25.519 --> 00:05:27.120
Why don't you go to his harem?
00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:33.600
And she's like, Okay, like somewhere along the lines, they either forgot the conversation they just had with God, right?
00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:41.600
Literally, Abraham watches the smoldering fire of Sodom and Gomorrah and still does not act in the fear of the Lord.
00:05:41.680 --> 00:05:44.720
And in the prom, he had a promise of God where God puts him in a trance.
00:05:44.800 --> 00:05:53.199
He watches a smoking firepot go through the pieces, and he's still for like it's like he has this promise of offspring through Sarah.
00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:57.360
And for some reason, he cannot lean into the promise of God.
00:05:57.519 --> 00:05:57.759
Right.
00:05:57.839 --> 00:06:04.879
And then, you know, the peak of all the irony in it, he does it because his assessment is there's no fear of God in the people here.
00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:05.279
Right.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:05.519
Yeah.
00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:10.399
And then come to find out the people there actually do have a fear of God, and Abraham's the one who doesn't have the fear of God.
00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:10.720
Yeah.
00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:12.319
Because he's so willing to give up his wife.
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:19.519
He's so uh and and I think this is the consequence for Abraham was you have to wait longer for your son.
00:06:20.319 --> 00:06:26.560
Because we have to make sure that no one thinks it could have been like Abimelech got her pregnant.
00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:39.120
We have to be at least far enough away from that where nobody could go back in the history books and say, you remember when uh, you know, uh she was 80 or 75 or whatever, and she did that little stint, that's where that kid came from.
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:42.000
Like that's that to me is wild.
00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:47.040
Now, what else is interesting is and I think this is God's promise, right?
00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:52.079
He like, why wouldn't God talk to Abraham?
00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:54.639
Like, why is he not communicating?
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:58.160
Why is he communicating with everybody except Abraham?
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.560
Like he only tells Abraham the good stuff, and he gives him plenty of good stuff.
00:07:02.720 --> 00:07:07.040
But when it comes to warning, like, I will kill you, uh, Abimelech, if you do not give the wife.
00:07:07.279 --> 00:07:13.759
Like, he could be like, hey, Abraham, it's really gonna ruin the plan if you give your wife when he makes the call to give his wife away.
00:07:13.920 --> 00:07:15.360
Why doesn't God step in there?
00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:19.199
That would have been a great, we wouldn't even have to have like a whole awkward conversation with Abimelech.
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:20.399
Why not?
00:07:20.720 --> 00:07:22.240
Like, what do you what do you think is going on?
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:24.560
What's God's perspective of all that?
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:25.680
I don't know.
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:32.639
My only thought would be he's giving Abraham a chance to repent and go, like, this is a bad idea.
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:43.519
And and then he has the pagan call out Abraham, and so that his, you know, like you have the person who is godless, no fear of God, is calling him to have a fear of God.
00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:55.920
And I think that's why it's so powerful for us is how many times um does a non-Christian world sometimes do more godly things to us and say, like, why are you not acting in accordance with the God that you say you believe in?
00:07:56.240 --> 00:08:00.240
Yeah, I, you know, I hesitate to say, here's what God was doing there, because it's not stated.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:15.279
But at the same time, you you know, I see similarities to like the story of Jonah, the prophet, who's running from God, and while the Gentile sailors or the, you know, wicked Ninevites are actually repenting um while Jonah is, you know, fleeing from God.
00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:32.639
And you see something similar here, um, where you go, okay, had God just stopped Abraham right there and spoken to him, like you said, well then um that may have been a missed opportunity, you know, for how God was going to work among, you know, Abimelech and and the people there.
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:39.840
And so I just see like the providence of God in using man's failures and sins to expand redemption to even more people.
00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:40.240
Yeah.
00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:47.679
And you know what also I sort of love about this is I wonder if God chose Abraham because he wasn't exactly the brightest bulb on the tree.
00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:48.799
Because he was, yeah, isn't it?
00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:51.200
He's an absolute wreck.
00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:59.600
And he's like, I'm gonna choose that guy, and he's gonna keep doing the wrong thing, but my promises will still stand strong, even though he screws it up over and over again.
00:08:59.840 --> 00:09:10.080
Which I like the the the humor and wit of Abimelech when he says, Sarah, behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver.
00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:14.960
It is a sign of your innocence in the eyes of all who are with you, and before everyone you are vindicated.
00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:17.679
Which that was kindness of Abimelech.
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:20.960
Like, I really appreciate that about him.
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:27.519
Even he's been completely uh disrespected by Abraham, saying, like, there's no fear of God in this place.
00:09:27.600 --> 00:09:31.440
You guys are all heathens, which is I mean, like, who says that?
00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:31.919
Yeah.
00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:36.559
Like, even at like 3,000 years ago, 4,000 years ago, who says that?
00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:37.679
Anyway.
00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:44.159
Yeah, and well, I mean, you look at verses like um six and seven, and it's just amazing how God works through this.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:49.679
You know, he's he he says to Abimelech, it was I who kept you from sinning against me.
00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:51.919
Therefore, I did not let you touch her.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:10:01.519
God, you know, sometimes we uh I don't know, we forget how how many times that, you know, when when we have like, man, I had a great day and I did it.
00:10:01.600 --> 00:10:09.600
We we forget how often God may be keeping us back from sin, that apart from his grace, we would have just gone off and done what our flesh wanted to do.
00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:11.759
God kept him from sinning.
00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:20.080
Um, and then uh says, give return the man's wife, so he he's a prophet, so that he'll pray for you and you shall live.
00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:20.480
Wow.
00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:33.840
Um, and so like God is just working this whole thing out to expand redemption, expand um his glory throughout people who maybe, you know, otherwise uh would have never known the power of God and the grace of God.
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:35.840
Yeah, let's go on that prayer thing for a second.
00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:36.799
Uh, because I love this.
00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:40.720
Why I uh one of the questions I like to ask people is like, why do we pray?
00:10:40.879 --> 00:10:47.200
If God already knows what we need, if God is already sovereign over the whole thing, why do we pray?
00:10:47.360 --> 00:10:53.360
And I think right here, you see it with Job uh when he when God tells him to pray for his friends and it'll heal him.
00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:58.720
You see it with Elijah when God tells him to pray and it'll rain and and not rain.
00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:08.799
You see it here with uh Abraham, pray for Abimelech and he will heal him and his family and the whole household because they he had made them barren.
00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:13.759
God uses his people to activate his will through their prayer.
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:18.000
Yeah, God does not just ordain the ends, he also ordains the means.
00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:20.159
And I love the fact that he loves to use us.
00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:30.320
And I think this is where you could, and I think sometimes we undervalue prayer because we're like, if God's gonna do whatever he's gonna do anyway, why am I praying?
00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:45.279
Because it might be that God activates his will through your prayers, and you can you can legitimately say, I prayed and things changed because God used your prayer to do the changing.
00:11:45.360 --> 00:12:02.480
And so I don't ever want to have anyone say, like, I God's gonna do whatever he's gonna do anyway, and then you rob yourself, and then you rob God of the glory he might get from you and from everyone else for your experiencing God working through you.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:03.120
Right.
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:11.279
And and God, you know, even though Abraham just totally sinned, God still used him.
00:12:11.519 --> 00:12:13.840
He used his prayer to bring about that healing.
00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:34.159
And a bit, and so like you just see the grace of God all over this, the grace of God toward Abraham, the grace of God toward Abimelech protecting him, the grace of God toward Sarah, protecting her from Abraham's sin and foolishness, the grace of God toward um all of the um, toward Abimelech's wife, um the female servants, um, opening their wombs that they can bear children.
00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:38.320
Like the grace of God to everyone involved in this is just amazing.
00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:50.240
I think one of the things that reading this in hindsight, when we have perfect knowledge of the whole thing, we can see where Abraham is short-sighted, we can see where Sarah is short-sighted, uh, and we can kind of like, guys, just trust the Lord.
00:12:50.320 --> 00:13:05.200
And then in our own lives, when we're pushed up against something, if we really believe that God was intricately involved so much so he would cause dreams to happen in the people around us so that we would not um, so that the darkness would not win.
00:13:05.519 --> 00:13:08.960
What if we really believe that and we started acting in accordance with that?
00:13:09.039 --> 00:13:11.120
Right, it would transform our lives.
00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:17.279
And I think that's the problem I think a lot of us have is that we don't believe God is in the business of interacting with us.
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:23.679
And we sort of, we just sort of like punt that to the Old Testament or with Jesus and the Bible, and that doesn't happen today.
00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:34.799
What I'm saying to you is if the same God who intervened in Abraham's life is the same God who's intervening in your life, convicting you of sin, Holy Spirit empowering you, using your prayers.
00:13:34.879 --> 00:13:45.200
Uh, when you pray for missionaries, when you pray for your family, when you pray for uh that person in your in your family that might be lost or a prodigal son, or you know, they're out there somewhere, and you're like, God, please would you speak to them?
00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:47.840
God uses those prayers.
00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:51.120
And so please be a person of prayer and then also a person who trusts.
00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:51.679
Amen.
00:13:51.919 --> 00:13:53.279
Any other thoughts on that?
00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:55.200
Just amen and amen.
00:13:55.360 --> 00:13:56.159
Amen, amen.
00:13:56.240 --> 00:13:58.799
Hey, we'll see you tomorrow on a jacket.
