00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:07.200
Do you think that you would be more productive and less likely to procrastinate if you had better time management skills?
00:00:07.519 --> 00:00:09.439
If you say yes, you're not alone.
00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:12.080
Most of us feel that way, myself included.
00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:21.280
And as a book coach, one of the main struggles my clients face is how often they procrastinate when they want to be writing.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:29.920
But what if I told you that procrastination and time management issues aren't the real cause of low writing productivity?
00:00:30.160 --> 00:00:34.799
What if I told you that procrastination wasn't the issue at all?
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:38.159
Hey writer, welcome to the Write It Scared Podcast.
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:39.759
I'm Stacy, your host.
00:00:40.079 --> 00:00:44.560
The podcast is on a break for the summer while I recharge and get ready for season four.
00:00:44.719 --> 00:00:46.719
But I didn't want to leave you hanging.
00:00:46.960 --> 00:00:55.920
Over the next couple months, I will be pulling some favorite solo episodes from the vault, episodes on craft, mindset, and just the messy reality of writing our books.
00:00:56.159 --> 00:01:02.079
Also, as a reminder, the Courage Files will remain open for submissions all summer long.
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:09.200
The Courage Files is a new segment launching on the podcast in season four where listeners share moments of writing courage, big or small.
00:01:09.439 --> 00:01:16.079
Maybe you finally figured out how to make a tricky scene work, or you finished your draft, or you shared your work.
00:01:16.239 --> 00:01:22.319
Maybe you returned to writing after a long time away, or you simply kept going when it would have been easier to quit.
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:25.040
Whatever your moment looks like, I want to hear about it.
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:30.079
And with your permission, share it on the podcast next season to help inspire other writers.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:32.640
Because remember, we're in this together.
00:01:32.879 --> 00:01:39.439
Every submission received this summer will be entered for a chance to win a free editorial assessment and book coaching session with me.
00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:43.200
And I'll announce the winner when season four kicks off this fall.
00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:50.159
To submit, go to writeitscared.co forward slash courage hyphen files, or you can find the link in the show notes.
00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:56.879
And if you're diving into planning or drafting a new novel this summer, grab my free novel quick start guide.
00:01:56.959 --> 00:02:08.080
It's called First Draft Confidence, and it's designed to help you build a strong foundation for your story so that you can move into your first draft with more clarity, more confidence, and a whole lot less flailing.
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:16.560
You can find the novel quick start guide at writitscared.co forward slash novel planning guide, or you can also find the link for that in the show notes.
00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:21.520
Alright, so let's get into today's episode and I'll see you back for real in season four.
00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:23.360
Well, hello, writer.
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:34.639
Today we're going to talk about procrastination and other forms of writing resistance and how to move past them so that you can get on with writing your novel.
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:42.080
So do you think that you would be more productive and less likely to procrastinate if you had better time management skills?
00:02:42.319 --> 00:02:44.240
If you say yes, you're not alone.
00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:46.879
Most of us feel that way, myself included.
00:02:47.199 --> 00:02:56.080
And as a book coach, one of the main struggles my clients face is how often they procrastinate when they want to be writing.
00:02:56.400 --> 00:03:04.719
But what if I told you that procrastination and time management issues aren't the real cause of low writing productivity?
00:03:04.960 --> 00:03:09.599
What if I told you that procrastination wasn't the issue at all?
00:03:09.919 --> 00:03:11.759
Did your eyebrows just go up?
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.800
My clients often do, especially when I tell them the truth.
00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:17.599
Procrastination is actually trying to help you.
00:03:17.919 --> 00:03:40.639
Procrastination is your body's attempt to solve the problem it's facing, the blank page, the scene you need to write, the outline you need to draft, the heap of words that you still need to revise, the query letter or the synopsis that you know you need to write, or the story idea that you've romanced writing forever, but you've never actually typed a word of.
00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:49.360
Even though these tasks can feel daunting, they aren't really what's triggering your procrastination or your poor time management either.
00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:54.479
So what is stress or perceived stress.
00:03:54.639 --> 00:03:56.800
To the mind body, it's one and the same.
00:03:56.960 --> 00:04:03.280
And to writers, writing is often stressful, especially when we focus on outcomes we can't control.
00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:05.520
Like, what are people going to think?
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:07.120
What if no one likes it?
00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:09.439
What if is it even worth it?
00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:11.439
What if I never get published?
00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:13.520
Who am I to write about this topic?
00:04:13.680 --> 00:04:15.680
It's probably a dumb idea anyway.
00:04:16.319 --> 00:04:28.079
And then there's the scarcity side of things, which looks like I don't have the time or the authority or the ability or the status or the know-how or the talent or the skills or the creativity or the authenticity.
00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:30.720
We could go on and on here, right?
00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:39.199
So procrastination is one mechanism that your body can use effectively and efficiently to temporarily reduce your stress levels.
00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:41.279
But it comes with a big cost.
00:04:41.600 --> 00:04:46.079
I recently read a book by a doctor of psychology named Tim Seichel.
00:04:46.319 --> 00:04:52.399
The book is called Solving the Procrastination Puzzle, a Concise Guide to the Strategies for Change, and I highly recommend it.
00:04:52.560 --> 00:04:56.959
I read it on, listened to it on audio, and it's short but concise.
00:04:57.120 --> 00:04:59.920
And I'll paraphrase here, but Dr.
00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:06.319
Seichel says that procrastination is actually an emotion-focused coping habit.
00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:20.240
And it's a problem of self-regulation in the same way that eating the second or third row of cookies is a self-regulation problem when we only wanted one cookie to begin with.
00:05:21.040 --> 00:05:23.839
The point is, it's not going to make us feel better.
00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:27.519
Putting things off isn't going to make us feel better either.
00:05:27.680 --> 00:05:34.000
But we hold on to this naive belief that this is the thing we need to do right now.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:41.439
Our present self believes that we're going to benefit, but our future self is who pays the price.
00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:44.240
And I just found this incredibly eye-opening.
00:05:44.399 --> 00:05:50.800
The idea that procrastination is an emotion-focused coping habit.
00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:53.439
So, what's the takeaway?
00:05:53.600 --> 00:06:05.600
Well, if you're caught up in procrastination and not writing your book or doing the work to reach your publishing dreams, and you're beating yourself up about it, please hear me.
00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:08.000
There is nothing wrong with you.
00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:13.439
You are not lazy, you are not weak, it is not because you are ill-equipped to do this work.
00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:15.920
You are a human being.
00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:26.560
And procrastination, which is just one of the many forms of resistance that we gravitate to, is a natural response to difficult and uncertain situations.
00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:34.480
So don't beat yourself up over your biology, but do investigate because feelings are not facts.
00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:37.920
I know if you know me, you know I say that a lot.
00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:47.439
Because it's true, and because I have to remind myself of that fact all the time because my feelings are very powerful and they can easily derail me.
00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:54.639
So I invite you to pop the hood and investigate what's really going on underneath your lack of progress.
00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:59.279
And first and foremost, remember that not all delay is procrastination.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:03.040
Sometimes there are very legitimate reasons for putting off our writing.
00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:12.000
The kids get sick, we get sick, something unforeseen or terrible happens, or something wonderful and positive happens, like we go on vacation.
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:15.680
You know, we live this messy life.
00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:24.319
My point is don't beat yourself up when you have to rejigger your priorities, and that means that writing falls to the bottom rung.
00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:36.079
But when lack of progress isn't related to life outcomes you can't control, then you need to do some digging and examine what the tape is saying that's playing inside of your head.
00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:38.800
So what are some ways to do that?
00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:40.240
Write about it.
00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:41.759
Get it outside of you.
00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:44.079
Talk to somebody you trust.
00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:46.079
Be honest about it.
00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:52.639
Because only when we are willing to face our resistance and our fears can we move beyond them.
00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:57.839
One of my clients recently experienced what I like to call the cozy stuck.
00:07:58.079 --> 00:08:02.240
They were frustrated by their lack of progress in drafting.
00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:11.600
But instead of working on a scene that they were supposed to turn into me, they were focused on continuing their character development and their world building and their organization.
00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:14.480
And these were things they felt comfortable with.
00:08:15.120 --> 00:08:21.279
Yeah, they were frustrated by their lack of traction, but they weren't changing anything.
00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:30.560
And after a little discussion, it turns out that they felt really overwhelmed by all the decisions they needed to make and were afraid of making the wrong choices.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:32.159
That's very real.
00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:36.799
So cue the mind-body stress, cue the procrastination.
00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:42.000
So I asked them, what if you stopped worrying about getting it right?
00:08:42.159 --> 00:08:47.120
What if you dropped your expectations to the dirt and then buried them?
00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:52.639
What would it actually hurt you to try to write this scene?
00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:54.559
And they just kind of looked at me.
00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:58.480
And you know, the fear of getting it getting things wrong is very, very real.
00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:01.200
But the truth is, so what?
00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:06.799
So what if you get it wrong, you'll fix it.
00:09:07.600 --> 00:09:10.399
That's the primary thing we do as writers.
00:09:11.279 --> 00:09:18.480
The only thing we can do is improve the work so long as we continue to work at it.
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:21.200
And we can never be perfect.
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:25.440
And even if we could be, it would not protect us from pain.
00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:29.919
It would not protect us from uncertainty, though our egos beg to differ.
00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:40.240
So I invite you to really look at what's going on inside yourself and figure out what's holding you back because no one can write this book but you.
00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:45.519
As writers, we often face resistance to doing our creative work.
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:53.440
It is a normal part of the process to have doubt, to feel unsteady, and procrastination is just one of those forms of resistance.
00:09:53.679 --> 00:09:58.159
And if resistance keeps us stuck for too long, we have to do something about it.
00:09:58.399 --> 00:10:07.120
So I have a simple process that I use with my clients, and it begins with cultivating awareness of what our brain wants us to believe in order to stay safe.
00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:13.519
We look at those beliefs and then we determine what's true and if it serves us.
00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:24.159
And if those beliefs don't serve us the way we want them to, we've got to find a way to rewrite them and take ownership of our decisions and the consequences of our action.
00:10:24.399 --> 00:10:27.120
Because writing a novel is an inside job.
00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:29.279
Yes, I say that a lot too.
00:10:29.759 --> 00:10:42.159
So if you're dealing with resistance, you're avoiding the blank page, avoiding the edit, or you've been in an endless research and prewriting cycle, try this process by answering these questions and see what comes up.
00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:49.840
Number one, ask yourself, what do I ultimately want in regards to my writing?
00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:55.519
Number two, why do I believe I can't have it?
00:10:57.120 --> 00:11:03.679
Notice what the but statements are that come up when you think about what you want.
00:11:04.399 --> 00:11:10.320
Slow down and consider if fear is hiding inside of any of those but statements.
00:11:10.799 --> 00:11:17.600
And recognize, again, that fear is a natural response to uncertainty and ask how that but statement is keeping you safe.
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:19.840
Now look for the truth.
00:11:20.080 --> 00:11:27.679
I often say that fear is a false expectation appearing real that is directing your action.
00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:33.919
So look at those but statements, those expectations, those fears that you have that are holding you back.
00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:37.279
Are you absolutely certain that they're going to happen?
00:11:37.519 --> 00:11:44.639
Are you absolutely certain that you can't write a novel in the 20 spare minutes that you have at night?
00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:52.399
Are you 100% sure that if you start revising your book, your changes won't really matter and it'll still be a mess?
00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:57.519
Are you absolutely sure you'll never be able to fix this first draft?
00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:59.919
Do you have a crystal ball?
00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:00.559
No.
00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:02.240
Me either.
00:12:02.480 --> 00:12:08.639
So there's a very good chance that what you're afraid of happening is not going to happen.
00:12:08.879 --> 00:12:16.320
And by leaning into resistance tactics like procrastination or perfectionism, you're never going to have to find out.
00:12:16.480 --> 00:12:17.840
You won't have to risk it.
00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:21.279
You'll be able to stay safe, which your mind body thinks is good.
00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:24.399
So high five self dodged another bullet there.
00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:34.720
But your higher self, the conscious self-aware, you knows that you're still going to be here, still stuck with a desire that you haven't moved on.
00:12:35.360 --> 00:12:37.200
And I know that's not what you want.
00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:39.440
You wouldn't be listening to this if it were.
00:12:40.799 --> 00:12:45.919
So you need to find a way to convince your body-mind that you're already safe to do this work.
00:12:48.159 --> 00:13:00.320
So if those but statements were not facts, ask yourself, what do you need to learn to believe instead to be able to take action that you need to move towards your goals?
00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:09.200
So you put this belief into practice by doing, because action is how we cultivate confidence.
00:13:09.919 --> 00:13:19.039
So whatever these beliefs may be, let's say it's the only thing I can do is make this book better by continuing to work.
00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:26.799
Every word I write matters and counts, and it serves towards creating a body of work that I'll be proud of.
00:13:27.519 --> 00:13:30.240
Maybe those are the beliefs that you need to lean into.
00:13:30.399 --> 00:13:34.559
And they're probably things that you don't believe at all right now, but that's okay.
00:13:34.799 --> 00:13:37.679
You don't have to believe it in order to take action.
00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:42.399
But let those beliefs become your daily affirmations.
00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:47.519
Say it to yourself a million times as you continue to take action to achieve your goals.
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:50.080
Act your way forward.
00:13:50.320 --> 00:13:52.159
We can't think our way forward.
00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:54.480
We have to act our way forward.
00:13:54.639 --> 00:13:55.519
That is the key.
00:13:55.679 --> 00:13:56.480
It is action.
00:13:57.120 --> 00:14:02.639
Action taken in small, consistent steps in service to our goals.
00:14:02.879 --> 00:14:10.080
So, writer friend, remind yourself that feeling resistance or fear is a natural response to uncertainty.
00:14:10.559 --> 00:14:12.159
There is nothing wrong with you.
00:14:12.480 --> 00:14:16.399
You are not weak, you are not lazy, you are not ill-equipped.
00:14:16.960 --> 00:14:23.600
Feelings are not facts, and you are safe to begin and continue, even if the outcome is unknown.
00:14:24.080 --> 00:14:27.360
Resistance is always going to come before growth.
00:14:27.679 --> 00:14:32.639
And the bigger the resistance you feel, the greater the growth you are going to experience.
00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:34.720
And you can do this.
00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:41.200
If you would like more help working through these types of resistance, I have a free guide that you can download.
00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:46.720
It's a mindset tool called Facing Writing Fears and Moving Past Creative Blocks.
00:14:46.960 --> 00:14:57.120
And the purpose is to help you learn to manage your expectations as you come to the page, identify and reframe any unhelpful narratives so that you can get back to writing.
00:14:57.600 --> 00:15:04.639
You can find it at www.writitscared.co forward slash the right mindset.
00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:13.120
Again, that's www.writeitscared.co forward slash the right mindset.
00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:18.320
