OVER DEZE AFLEVERING
In this final part of her Understanding the Scriptures series, Cindy Young explains three types of scripture passages you’ll encounter—informational, stories, and sermons—how to identify them, and how to approach each. Informational sections (like genealogies, land descriptions, and laws) can be list-heavy and difficult, so she suggests skimming or even skipping long informational chapters if you’re not ready for a deep dive. Stories are easiest to follow, so she recommends retelling the events, looking for messages and character choices, noticing sequence, and applying principles to your life. Sermons focus on doctrine, commandments, warnings, and promises from prophets or the Lord, so she advises looking for truths taught, personal application, and what they teach about Jesus Christ. Come back next month to learn all about how using a pencil can enhance your scripture study.

Don't forget the parable of the snowball: listening to someone else talk about the gospel is like having snowballs thrown at you. Reading the scriptures is like making your own snowball. Taking the time to search, ponder, and pray about what you've read is like rolling the snowball around and around so that it grows and grows. So don't just listen to me - please go read for yourself so your knowledge and testimony can grow and grow!!

00:00:00.043 --> 00:00:09.957
When my kids were little and I would put them to bed, sometimes they would ask for a bedtime story, and I would try to tell them stories that were more boring than you can possibly imagine.
00:00:10.243 --> 00:00:16.347
I would describe every single detail and I would drag this story on in the most boring way possible.
00:00:16.538 --> 00:00:30.202
but if my husband was in the room when they asked for a story, I knew that we were cooked! He would tell exciting stories with silly twists and monsters who said unexpected things while wearing ridiculous socks.
00:00:30.855 --> 00:00:34.741
Now, which story do you think helped my kids to fall asleep faster?
00:00:35.499 --> 00:00:46.082
When you read the scriptures, you are going to come across some parts that are exciting and interesting to read and follow, and then other parts will almost put you to sleep.
00:00:46.707 --> 00:00:51.220
Today is part five of my tips to help you understand the scriptures.
00:00:51.676 --> 00:00:59.215
And we are talking about three different kinds of passages that you will encounter in the scriptures, how to identify them, and what to do with them.
00:00:59.631 --> 00:01:02.396
I'm Cindy Young, and this is Primarily Scripture.
00:01:08.129 --> 00:01:12.748
We're gonna talk today about three different types of passages that you'll encounter in the scriptures.
00:01:12.956 --> 00:01:20.923
The first one is the hardest to understand and in my opinion, that is most likely to make you want to quit reading the Old Testament, and that is Informational.
00:01:21.391 --> 00:01:24.965
The second is the easiest to follow and understand, and that is Stories.
00:01:24.965 --> 00:01:26.766
We all are familiar with scripture stories.
00:01:27.209 --> 00:01:32.870
And the third one gives us the most clear teachings, and that is Sermons.
00:01:33.209 --> 00:01:37.670
So let's talk about these three different types, informational stories and sermons.
00:01:38.186 --> 00:01:39.933
How can you identify them?
00:01:40.012 --> 00:01:45.742
Well, for the informational passages, it's easy to identify them because spoiler alert, you're gonna be bored.
00:01:46.093 --> 00:01:57.572
these are often told in list form and you'll get a list of genealogy or a list of descriptions about lands- like to the east was this city and to the west was that city and the river ran through it.
00:01:57.615 --> 00:02:04.710
The other kind of informational passage that we'll get to pretty soon in our studies is administrative, the law of Moses.
00:02:04.710 --> 00:02:05.546
What are the rules?
00:02:05.546 --> 00:02:06.798
What are the consequences?
00:02:07.111 --> 00:02:11.397
What do the priests wear, and how should the priests perform the sacrifices.
00:02:11.633 --> 00:02:12.258
Things like that.
00:02:12.302 --> 00:02:17.962
It is very informational, very boring, and for most of us, very hard to get through.
00:02:18.123 --> 00:02:20.444
So that's gonna be kind of easy to identify.
00:02:20.776 --> 00:02:28.758
Now informationally, you'll have times that are talking about places or people, but the stories will also have people and places.
00:02:29.019 --> 00:02:37.236
Instead of just listing them and describing them, you get things like what they did, what they said, their interactions with each other, where they went.
00:02:37.451 --> 00:02:41.469
Stories will also have a timeline, a sequence of events.
00:02:41.705 --> 00:02:43.191
This happened, then this happened.
00:02:43.191 --> 00:02:44.365
What happened next?
00:02:44.626 --> 00:02:48.644
And this is what we are most familiar with because this is what we tell our kids, right?
00:02:48.687 --> 00:02:50.305
We start with scripture stories.
00:02:50.513 --> 00:02:51.322
Very easy.
00:02:51.522 --> 00:02:55.335
And this is most people's favorite kind of passage to read in the scriptures.
00:02:55.935 --> 00:02:59.102
The third kind of passage that you'll come across are sermons.
00:02:59.188 --> 00:03:04.542
I'm sure you already know what a sermon is, but for our very youngest or newest listeners, I'll just explain it real quick.
00:03:04.723 --> 00:03:10.100
It's basically a talk that teaches about something religious, something in the context of the gospel.
00:03:10.310 --> 00:03:13.413
So when someone gives a talk in church, they're giving a sermon.
00:03:13.597 --> 00:03:16.466
When they speak in General Conference, they're giving a sermon.
00:03:16.700 --> 00:03:19.649
We get writings in the scriptures of sermons that the prophets gave.
00:03:19.981 --> 00:03:30.929
These will often include things like commandments, what we're supposed to do, doctrine, eternal truth, promises, warnings, to do lists- we'll be encouraged to act in some way.
00:03:31.268 --> 00:03:32.206
That's a sermon.
00:03:32.473 --> 00:03:35.890
We can also identify it because it's given by somebody in authority.
00:03:36.126 --> 00:03:39.108
Especially in the scriptures, sermons are given by prophets.
00:03:39.264 --> 00:03:44.943
Sometimes you'll come across a sermon that is given by the Lord himself because he's giving commandments and teachings to the people.
00:03:45.211 --> 00:03:52.020
Now that we know the three different types of passages and how to identify them, let's talk about why you would even want to identify them.
00:03:52.394 --> 00:03:56.959
Why would you need to identify whether you're reading information or a story or a sermon?
00:03:57.610 --> 00:03:59.723
Well, it will help you to understand better.
00:03:59.750 --> 00:04:02.959
That's what this month is all about, understanding the scriptures.
00:04:03.332 --> 00:04:21.800
What if you opened up the Book of Mormon and you were reading what King Benjamin said, and you thought that he was telling a story about what he did as a king- because he definitely talks about that- and if you think that's a story that he's telling, then your brain will get locked into story mode and it might start looking for what happens next.
00:04:22.490 --> 00:04:32.403
And then you're going to be confused when he starts talking about the suffering that people will go through if they rebel against God, or when he starts talking about how we should feed the hungry.
00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:34.456
Well, it's not a story.
00:04:34.848 --> 00:04:36.778
King Benjamin was giving a sermon.
00:04:37.237 --> 00:04:48.125
At the same time, if you read information like a story, you'll probably get bored very quickly, and you might even fall asleep just like my kids did when I purposefully told them boring bedtime stories.
00:04:48.541 --> 00:04:55.872
So that information that's included in the Bible was put there to preserve the history and for people who want to know every detail.
00:04:56.170 --> 00:05:08.245
If that's not for you, or if your brain is looking for a story, then most likely you won't get much out of it, you'll probably be confused, and you might even consider never reading the scriptures again because they're just too hard, too boring, too confusing.
00:05:08.762 --> 00:05:11.762
And we don't want to have that happen, so let's avoid that.
00:05:12.310 --> 00:05:23.684
If you are feeling confused by the scriptures, then you could try to identify if you're reading information, a story, or a sermon, and then you'll know better how to handle that passage.
00:05:23.947 --> 00:05:25.591
So how do we approach these passages?
00:05:25.774 --> 00:05:28.305
Let's start with the easiest one first- stories.
00:05:29.031 --> 00:05:30.413
And you already know how to do this.
00:05:30.543 --> 00:05:34.430
If you're reading a scripture story, the first thing to do is make sure you understand it.
00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:36.074
Can you retell what happened?
00:05:36.398 --> 00:05:41.223
After you know the basics of the story, then you can start asking yourself, what can we learn from this?
00:05:41.615 --> 00:05:45.814
Is there an overall message of the story of faith or courage or patience?
00:05:46.206 --> 00:05:47.692
You could analyze the characters.
00:05:47.737 --> 00:05:51.444
How did they respond to their trials, or what Christlike attributes did they have?
00:05:52.002 --> 00:05:56.507
You could look at the timeline and ask yourself, is there anything significant about the order of events?
00:05:57.028 --> 00:05:59.403
And then third, relate it to your own life.
00:05:59.761 --> 00:06:03.961
How is my understanding of a gospel principle different because of this story?
00:06:03.961 --> 00:06:07.586
And how can I make choices that reflect what I've learned from this story?
00:06:07.934 --> 00:06:15.029
That's the most common way of reading and studying and applying the scriptures is with stories, because it really is the easiest.
00:06:15.401 --> 00:06:23.891
When you have a sermon, you're gonna approach it similarly, but instead of looking for the people and the timeline, you're going to look for those specific doctrines.
00:06:24.127 --> 00:06:27.336
What is the truth that's being taught and how can I understand it better?
00:06:27.569 --> 00:06:34.562
Looking for ways to apply it to yourself, of course, and always, always asking, what does this teach me about Jesus Christ?
00:06:35.343 --> 00:06:42.230
Now, my tip for what to do with information, you are either going to love or hate this tip.
00:06:42.434 --> 00:06:45.966
Either you'll think that I'm sacrilegious or that I'm an actual genius.
00:06:45.992 --> 00:06:46.958
Are you ready for this?
00:06:47.170 --> 00:06:51.632
Because the informational parts of the Old Testament, it's like boss level scripture study.
00:06:51.903 --> 00:06:55.267
This is deep and boring and complicated stuff.
00:06:55.762 --> 00:07:04.004
So think about it this way- we wouldn't put a 4-year-old dancer in point shoes to dance ballet, and we wouldn't take a 9-year-old pitcher and put him in the World Series.
00:07:04.487 --> 00:07:10.930
We wouldn't take a 2-year-old who really, really loves trucks and put them in the pits at a monster truck rally.
00:07:11.125 --> 00:07:17.334
Even though each of them may love those different activities, they're not ready for that level of involvement.
00:07:17.620 --> 00:07:21.588
So the same thing goes with these long passages of information in the scriptures.
00:07:21.850 --> 00:07:28.959
This is like the hardest part, the hardest possible thing that you could study in the scriptures, is all of these nitty gritty details.
00:07:29.273 --> 00:08:01.488
So when you come across these long passages of information, and I'm not talking about a phrase or one or two verses, I mean like a whole page or a whole chapter, when you come across these passages, my advice to you is skim it or skip it! Now, I'm not saying that these are not important or that you should never read them, but let's be honest, if you are here on Primarily Scripture looking for help with your scripture study, then how to do a deep dive and get something out of the very hardest and the most complex parts of the Old Testament, is not something that you're actually looking for.
00:08:02.036 --> 00:08:09.886
Once you are comfortable in the Bible, there are many other resources to help you with these informational chapters and passages.
00:08:10.274 --> 00:08:17.684
Until then, if your goal is to read every single word of the Old Testament, then when you come to these passages, just skim over it.
00:08:17.684 --> 00:08:23.423
You can even use the chapter headings to help you get a sense of what they're talking about, and then quickly skim through it.
00:08:23.944 --> 00:08:28.213
And otherwise, if you're not trying to read every single word, feel free to skip it entirely.
00:08:28.526 --> 00:08:34.657
Your energy will be much better spent if you are looking at the stories and the sermons and applying them to your life.
00:08:35.140 --> 00:08:46.445
So if you really want to understand the scriptures and feel comfortable with the parts that you are reading, then identifying these stories and sermons and informational passages is a really good place to start.
00:08:46.815 --> 00:09:00.058
And with each one, once you identify the kind of passage you're reading, your brain will get switched into that mode, and you'll be able to follow and process what you read so much easier than if you just stumble along unsure of the kinds of words that you're reading.
00:09:01.153 --> 00:09:08.293
All right, so if you've been listening all month, then you've got a whole pocket full of tips and tricks that will help you to better understand the scriptures.
00:09:08.580 --> 00:09:09.701
Coming up next month.
00:09:09.701 --> 00:09:14.985
We're gonna focus on all the ways that a pen or a pencil can change your scripture study forever.
00:09:15.140 --> 00:09:16.263
You're going to love it.
00:09:16.732 --> 00:09:19.446

00:03:45.211 --> 00:03:52.020
Now that we know the three different types of passages and how to identify them, let's talk about why you would even want to identify them.
00:03:52.394 --> 00:03:56.959
Why would you need to identify whether you're reading information or a story or a sermon?
00:03:57.610 --> 00:03:59.723
Well, it will help you to understand better.
00:03:59.750 --> 00:04:02.959
That's what this month is all about, understanding the scriptures.
00:04:03.332 --> 00:04:21.800
What if you opened up the Book of Mormon and you were reading what King Benjamin said, and you thought that he was telling a story about what he did as a king- because he definitely talks about that- and if you think that's a story that he's telling, then your brain will get locked into story mode and it might start looking for what happens next.
00:04:22.490 --> 00:04:32.403
And then you're going to be confused when he starts talking about the suffering that people will go through if they rebel against God, or when he starts talking about how we should feed the hungry.
00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:34.456
Well, it's not a story.
00:04:34.848 --> 00:04:36.778
King Benjamin was giving a sermon.
00:04:37.237 --> 00:04:48.125
At the same time, if you read information like a story, you'll probably get bored very quickly, and you might even fall asleep just like my kids did when I purposefully told them boring bedtime stories.
00:04:48.541 --> 00:04:55.872
So that information that's included in the Bible was put there to preserve the history and for people who want to know every detail.
00:04:56.170 --> 00:05:08.245
If that's not for you, or if your brain is looking for a story, then most likely you won't get much out of it, you'll probably be confused, and you might even consider never reading the scriptures again because they're just too hard, too boring, too confusing.
00:05:08.762 --> 00:05:11.762
And we don't want to have that happen, so let's avoid that.
00:05:12.310 --> 00:05:23.684
If you are feeling confused by the scriptures, then you could try to identify if you're reading information, a story, or a sermon, and then you'll know better how to handle that passage.
00:05:23.947 --> 00:05:25.591
So how do we approach these passages?
00:05:25.774 --> 00:05:28.305
Let's start with the easiest one first- stories.
00:05:29.031 --> 00:05:30.413
And you already know how to do this.
00:05:30.543 --> 00:05:34.430
If you're reading a scripture story, the first thing to do is make sure you understand it.
00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:36.074
Can you retell what happened?
00:05:36.398 --> 00:05:41.223
After you know the basics of the story, then you can start asking yourself, what can we learn from this?
00:05:41.615 --> 00:05:45.814
Is there an overall message of the story of faith or courage or patience?
00:05:46.206 --> 00:05:47.692
You could analyze the characters.
00:05:47.737 --> 00:05:51.444
How did they respond to their trials, or what Christlike attributes did they have?
00:05:52.002 --> 00:05:56.507
You could look at the timeline and ask yourself, is there anything significant about the order of events?
00:05:57.028 --> 00:05:59.403
And then third, relate it to your own life.
00:05:59.761 --> 00:06:03.961
How is my understanding of a gospel principle different because of this story?
00:06:03.961 --> 00:06:07.586
And how can I make choices that reflect what I've learned from this story?
00:06:07.934 --> 00:06:15.029
That's the most common way of reading and studying and applying the scriptures is with stories, because it really is the easiest.
00:06:15.401 --> 00:06:23.891
When you have a sermon, you're gonna approach it similarly, but instead of looking for the people and the timeline, you're going to look for those specific doctrines.
00:06:24.127 --> 00:06:27.336
What is the truth that's being taught and how can I understand it better?
00:06:27.569 --> 00:06:34.562
Looking for ways to apply it to yourself, of course, and always, always asking, what does this teach me about Jesus Christ?
00:06:35.343 --> 00:06:42.230
Now, my tip for what to do with information, you are either going to love or hate this tip.
00:06:42.434 --> 00:06:45.966
Either you'll think that I'm sacrilegious or that I'm an actual genius.
00:06:45.992 --> 00:06:46.958
Are you ready for this?
00:06:47.170 --> 00:06:51.632
Because the informational parts of the Old Testament, it's like boss level scripture study.
00:06:51.903 --> 00:06:55.267
This is deep and boring and complicated stuff.
00:06:55.762 --> 00:07:04.004
So think about it this way- we wouldn't put a 4-year-old dancer in point shoes to dance ballet, and we wouldn't take a 9-year-old pitcher and put him in the World Series.
00:07:04.487 --> 00:07:10.930
We wouldn't take a 2-year-old who really, really loves trucks and put them in the pits at a monster truck rally.
00:07:11.125 --> 00:07:17.334
Even though each of them may love those different activities, they're not ready for that level of involvement.
00:07:17.620 --> 00:07:21.588
So the same thing goes with these long passages of information in the scriptures.
00:07:21.850 --> 00:07:28.959
This is like the hardest part, the hardest possible thing that you could study in the scriptures, is all of these nitty gritty details.
00:07:29.273 --> 00:08:01.488
00:08:02.036 --> 00:08:09.886
Once you are comfortable in the Bible, there are many other resources to help you with these informational chapters and passages.
00:08:10.274 --> 00:08:17.684
Until then, if your goal is to read every single word of the Old Testament, then when you come to these passages, just skim over it.
00:08:17.684 --> 00:08:23.423
You can even use the chapter headings to help you get a sense of what they're talking about, and then quickly skim through it.
00:08:23.944 --> 00:08:28.213
And otherwise, if you're not trying to read every single word, feel free to skip it entirely.
00:08:28.526 --> 00:08:34.657
Your energy will be much better spent if you are looking at the stories and the sermons and applying them to your life.
00:08:35.140 --> 00:08:46.445
So if you really want to understand the scriptures and feel comfortable with the parts that you are reading, then identifying these stories and sermons and informational passages is a really good place to start.
00:08:46.815 --> 00:09:00.058
And with each one, once you identify the kind of passage you're reading, your brain will get switched into that mode, and you'll be able to follow and process what you read so much easier than if you just stumble along unsure of the kinds of words that you're reading.
00:09:01.153 --> 00:09:08.293
All right, so if you've been listening all month, then you've got a whole pocket full of tips and tricks that will help you to better understand the scriptures.
00:09:08.580 --> 00:09:09.701
