OVER DEZE AFLEVERING
What happens when a US family member moves abroad, or when you finally buy that dream villa in Tuscany? The tax and estate planning implications might surprise you and could even render your investment worthless if you're not careful.
In this episode, host David Savir reconnects with law school classmate Sarah Jacobson, a Partner at Day Pitney and one of the leading voices in international estate planning for high-net-worth families. Based in Miami, Sarah has spent her career navigating the complex intersection of US tax law, foreign trust structures, and cross-border wealth transfers.
Their conversation reveals eye-opening scenarios that catch even sophisticated families off guard: how a single trustee relocating to the UK can accidentally trigger an exit tax on an entire trust, why funding a simple revocable living trust while living abroad could cost you 20% upfront in certain countries, and the surprising concept of "forced heirship" that overrides your will in places like Italy and Costa Rica. Sarah also shares how the rise of digital nomads and second-passport seekers is creating tax complexities that existing laws simply haven't caught up with yet.
Whether you own foreign real estate, have family members scattered across the globe, or are considering a move abroad yourself, this episode is essential listening.
