OVER DEZE AFLEVERING
Welcome back to Mayhem & Masterplans, where Max, Simon, and Andreas dive into the often-debated topic of finding joy in your work. From American football season to Bavarian hot mustards, the guys navigate the fine line between passion and profession, societal expectations, and the pure mayhem of finding fulfillment—or at least satisfaction—in day-to-day work.
In this episode, we:
🔹 Kick off with an unexpected quest – Can we bring fun back to work? Or is the current societal mood making everything a chore? Max challenges the pervasive negativity and questions why work has to be joyless.
🔹 Revisit the "occupation" debate (carefully) – While Max steers clear of Andreas's pet peeve, we touch on the German perspective of work as an "occupation" versus a path to fulfillment, especially when contrasting business worlds in Spain, the US, and Germany.
🔹 Explore the concept of "work-life blending" – Inspired by Andreas Herb of MBG, we delve into the idea of merging business with pleasure. But is this a privileged position for those in profit-making, event-heavy industries, or applicable to any job?
🔹 Ask: Can *any* job be fun? – Andreas shares his experience as an EMT, finding satisfaction in providing service despite the challenging and often unpleasant tasks. He argues that a mindset shift can transform even the most difficult roles.
🔹 Simon’s print house revelation – From being a 16-year-old apprentice seeing 30 years ahead of him in a demanding print house to the realization that repetitive work wasn’t his path. We discuss the profound impact of early career experiences on long-term career choices.
🔹 The power of choice – Andreas emphasizes that realizing "this is temporary as long as I choose it to be" is crucial for emotional well-being. We acknowledge those who find peace in stability versus those who thrive on change.
🔹 Max’s mandatory service wisdom – Max reflects on his time assisting a wheelchair user, gaining dual insights: the satisfaction of creating vs. helping, and a heightened awareness of societal diversity and accessibility needs. An experience that provides crucial life perspectives, even if it confirms what you *don't* want to do.
🔹 The right to work for money – We stress that it's perfectly valid to perform a job simply to get paid and fund your life, without seeking profound fulfillment in the work itself. "It is totally okay to work so that you can have a life during the rest of the time."
🔹 The challenge of culture at scale – Building a company culture that accommodates varied motivations (from seeking fulfillment to simply earning a living) is a complex task often underestimated by startup founders, leading to scaling issues.
As always, we close with what’s been on repeat:
🎵 Straight Outta Nowhere - H-Blockxx
🎵 Song for Lovers - Bachelors of Science
🎵 Maybe So, Maybe No - Mayer Hawthorne
