00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:18.960
Now let's jump right in.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:27.760
Welcome everybody today to the Let's Talk About Pools Live podcast.
00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:36.399
And yes, yet again, my regular uh co-anchor, you guys are so used to joking with me, which is Rob Stewart.
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:43.439
I'm missing him here two times in a row, but I'm enjoying having guest co-anchors on with me.
00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:54.240
And today I have Jeff David with League Business Academy and also Leak and Subservice Locators out of Florida here.
00:00:54.399 --> 00:00:55.359
Welcome today, Jeff.
00:00:55.439 --> 00:00:56.000
How are you?
00:00:56.320 --> 00:00:57.840
Thank you, Laura.
00:00:58.240 --> 00:00:59.439
So I'm awesome.
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:03.600
As I said, we're gonna we announce what we're gonna talk about.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:08.640
He's such a specialist when it comes to leaks, and it's such an interesting topic to talk about.
00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:15.680
So we thought we would educate a little bit today on the live uh podcast and talk about leaks today.
00:01:15.760 --> 00:01:18.799
And then at the very end, I will bring up my public.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:21.840
I have to bring up my public health topic, right?
00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:24.159
That's my background.
00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:28.719
You know leaks, I know public health stuff and pools.
00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:31.599
So it's kind of like weird topics here.
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:37.519
So tell everybody a little bit about you so they know a little bit about you, Jeff, before we get started.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:41.680
Okay, of course, Jeff David, um, living in Palm Beach, Florida.
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:48.959
We own Leak and Subsurface Locators, which is a family leak locating business, been in it about 20 years.
00:01:49.200 --> 00:02:04.319
Family's always been in the pool industry, and then we developed the Leak Business Academy about a year ago to start teaching people how to do pool leaks because we found there was a part in the market that was missing.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:11.919
Everyone's selling equipment, but no one's teaching how to actually do pool leaks, so we wanted to fill that gap.
00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:24.639
Awesome, and and it's something that you you agree is something nice that a pool company could like add to their repertoire of services that they have.
00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:32.639
Your cleaning pools, you might be doing your service contractor, you might be doing some repairs, and then you're like, what else can I add?
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:37.360
And I know I've talked about inspections before uh on the podcast.
00:02:37.439 --> 00:02:43.599
So this is the other thing that's really enticing that uh people don't think about sometimes.
00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:55.039
Well, adding other things because you already have the customer, the customer already trusts you, they don't want to go through the research of trying to find someone they don't know.
00:02:55.360 --> 00:02:57.599
So why not take the business?
00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:20.159
And if if anything, if you have a big route or a big company, knowing what a leak guy is supposed to do helps you because if you go and subcontract out or refer out a leak detection some person and they do a bad job because you didn't know what they were supposed to do, it kind of makes you look bad.
00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:27.759
So if you're in construction, you have a big service company, or you're just the individual person, just the knowledge.
00:03:27.840 --> 00:03:35.599
The more knowledge you have, the better service you give your customers, and basically the bigger your business gets, the more money you make.
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:38.159
That that's very true.
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:39.680
So we're gonna talk about that.
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:43.120
We're gonna talk about like mistakes with leak detection.
00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:57.039
We're gonna be talking today about the pressurizing tests a little bit, and then some of the electronic equipment used for uh leak detection, and then my little public health thing, we're gonna talk about raccoons and pools.
00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:04.400
So before we totally get into that, I don't want to forget about our strategic podcast sponsor today.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:13.280
Um, I always get into these topics and then I forget, and I end up playing their sponsorship video later on in the podcast.
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:17.439
And I really want to, you know, give them their kudos in the beginning here.
00:04:17.759 --> 00:04:24.399
So our strategic podcast sponsor has been since the beginning of 2026 now, uh, Pool Brain.
00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:29.439
Thank you, Pool Brain, for uh, you know, they are investing in education.
00:04:29.600 --> 00:04:39.920
This is education through a medium that's different, more available online um for our podcast listeners and anybody who joins in as well.
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:51.360
So listen in to what they have to uh share, and then we'll be right back after uh we hear from Pool Brain.
00:04:52.160 --> 00:04:58.959
I talked to so many customers that are using this app for this feature, this app for this, and this app for this, and said, Well, why don't you just use pool brain?
00:04:59.040 --> 00:04:59.759
Because we can do it all.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:01.439
I absolutely love Pool Brain.
00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:03.360
There's not a better app on the market.
00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:06.800
We've tested a ton of different ones and we landed on Pool Brain for a reason.
00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:09.439
We have well over 6,000 pools on PoolBrain.
00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:13.600
We've been on a few other platforms in the past, and this one's been five power, the best one we've been on.
00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:21.439
Very intuitive and easily used for full professinals and very obviously made for full professionals, and uh love it.
00:05:22.160 --> 00:05:24.639
I love a lot of full brain babies.
00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:36.560
Yeah, I think that's everybody.
00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:51.279
Welcome back.
00:05:51.600 --> 00:05:54.240
I love, I'm not gonna use the bad word.
00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:57.439
I love pool brain, they are awesome over there.
00:05:57.519 --> 00:05:59.519
They got some awesome people that work there.
00:05:59.680 --> 00:06:03.920
I love working with them and them being part of the podcast.
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:09.519
They're a strategic uh diamond educational partner with Space Coast Pool School as well.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:11.839
So, um, as well as Aquastar.
00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:14.160
So thank you, Aquastar, for that as well.
00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:22.000
But they pool brain is the only sponsor of the Let's Talk About Pools podcast live and recorded.
00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:23.120
So thank you very much.
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:26.800
It's been a great year with you guys, and I appreciate it.
00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:34.160
And uh got gotta bring up my strategic uh apparel sponsor, which is Revved Up Apparel.
00:06:34.319 --> 00:06:36.240
He's right out of Florida, Jeff.
00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:42.480
He's a pool, he has a pool company, service company over on the west coast of Florida.
00:06:42.720 --> 00:06:49.680
Uh the Douglases, they're wonderful, and they made my shirts for Space Coast Pool School and for the podcast.
00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:54.879
So I'll be wearing those around at trade conferences this coming season.
00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:57.600
I can't wait starting November through February.
00:06:57.839 --> 00:06:59.759
Woohoo! I wrote it down.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:00.800
Revved up.
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:02.720
Yes, revved up apparel.
00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:03.920
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:04.639
They're beautiful.
00:07:04.720 --> 00:07:08.399
I mean, look, look, look at how the color gradient and stuff.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:11.040
It's like water, they can design anything.
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:11.839
It's it's cool.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:14.720
And they do collared shirts, they're dry fit.
00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:23.519
You could do the v-neck, they do uh the the hoodie, you know, where you have the hoodie thing to get out of the sun, they have the sunscreen protection.
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:25.360
Go go look them up, they're great.
00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:35.439
So I wanted to give them kudos as well because they uh have been great as an apparel sponsor for uh both Space Coast Pool School and Let's Talk About Pools podcast.
00:07:35.519 --> 00:07:37.680
So I know everybody wants to get right in.
00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:42.480
Before we do, I like to say hi to some of our people that are in listening.
00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:46.639
So on Instagram right now, we have Coastal Wave Pools that joined.
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:51.120
We got Rocka Pavers, George 88.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:54.639
This one, I'm not gonna fall for it.
00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:56.240
I finally met her in person.
00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:00.480
I was called, I was calling her the wrong name on Instagram.
00:08:00.639 --> 00:08:02.399
It's Day by the Pool.
00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:04.480
Hey, I got it right, Day.
00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:07.120
And then pool guy beard is on.
00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:16.480
Welcome guys to the live podcast that's streaming on Instagram, and anybody on Facebook join us, anybody on uh LinkedIn join us.
00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:27.040
We're on Lauren Broom on in on uh Facebook, Lauren Broom on LinkedIn, and CPO classes live on uh Instagram every other week, guys.
00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:29.519
So uh thank you for being here.
00:08:29.759 --> 00:08:36.720
All right, so let's talk a little, Jeff, about some mistakes that commonly happen with leak detection.
00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:42.799
Okay, so I have three common mistakes, and the biggest thing is a system.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:46.559
You have to have a system when you're doing pool leaks.
00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:53.120
Without the system, you're gonna be all over the place, you're gonna be missing stuff, and the biggest thing is time.
00:08:53.600 --> 00:09:04.159
If you don't follow a system, it's gonna take you three to four times longer to do a complete leak detection than if you have a system where you can actually go step by step by step.
00:09:04.559 --> 00:09:11.840
And if you skip a step, you always know you can go back and then go through the whole entire thing and finish up.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:16.399
That's one second mistake training.
00:09:17.039 --> 00:09:23.279
So it's not just going to one person and learning something myself.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:26.399
I'm a trainer, but I still go to training.
00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:32.720
I try to learn as much as I can because I am not the guru, I am not the total expert.
00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:46.559
There's always something I can learn, and from talking from having the school and talking to people around the world, um, I'm learning that pools are built differently, the way they do stuff is differently, and their equipment they use is different.
00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:52.080
And it's things that I never knew before, and I thought I knew quite a bit, and I don't.
00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:59.759
Um, so training just all the training, even if it's outside of pool leaks, how to how to fix a pump.
00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:04.879
And because a lot of times you have leaks of pumps, the client wants to know how do I fix this.
00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:08.000
You don't say, Oh, your pump is leaking, uh, you're on your own.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:10.240
It's this is how you need to fix it.
00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:15.919
Um, how to do repairs, even if you don't do repairs, you gotta know what the repair is.
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:22.240
So when you talk to the client, you say, This is what they need to do, this is how they're gonna do it, this is what to expect.
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:28.480
Yeah, and I don't have any more comments on that because I have uh the third one, which is the last.
00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:29.840
You ready?
00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:30.799
I'm ready.
00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:32.399
Follow up, follow-up.
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:48.639
Nobody, I should say nobody, but most leak guys do not follow up with their clients, and that is where you solidify that um that relationship where they remember you and you want the reviews, but it's it's more than that.
00:10:48.960 --> 00:11:00.480
I've gone to many leaks where some other leak company came, um, they missed the leak, but they didn't know it because the customer was upset and they just called someone else.
00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:07.440
So part of the learning process is call them up and find out hey, how's everything going?
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:09.039
Uh, is the pool still leaking?
00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:13.200
If the pool's still leaking, you miss something, and that's a learning experience.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:18.720
And also, it gives trust to the client that you actually care.
00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:23.200
You called up, you followed through, and then you made good on your promise.
00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:28.720
Um, and that's what spreads word, and that's how you develop professionalism.
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:34.480
It's it's one of the most important things I stress to everyone is you gotta do that follow-up.
00:11:35.279 --> 00:11:37.600
I think that's important in any business.
00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:55.440
The follow-up, and you have that relationship that you build with the uh with your customer base and stuff like that, they're more likely to then come back to you if there's another issue, another leak, or if you're doing other things other than leaks, if you're if the pump's down or whatever.
00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:04.000
So you don't want them to forget about you, you don't want to annoy them, but you do it in such a way that it's that happy medium, right?
00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:16.879
And yeah, and you also um think about when you had a service, and then um you get something in your mind where you thought, well, they didn't do this, but even though it wasn't part of the service, then you start thinking about it.
00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:19.039
That's a time for them to talk.
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:23.759
So um, I have a client now, uh, his vacuum's not working.
00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:28.639
Okay, we we put a skimmer in, but his vacuum's not working.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:31.679
Now he starts thinking they ruined my vacuum.
00:12:31.919 --> 00:12:38.000
So just the follow-up phone call we made, he goes, Hey, my vacuum wasn't working, uh, we're like, Yeah, we noticed.
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:40.720
We actually noticed the the whole thing was destroyed.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:44.879
Um, and then we could suggest this is what needs to be done, this is what you have to do.
00:12:44.960 --> 00:12:49.440
And he was the happiest in the world because he knows nothing about vacuums.
00:12:50.000 --> 00:13:03.679
So, because we were the last ones there, it got contributed to us, but because we did the follow-up phone call, that thing that was in his mind, he was able to talk about, and then we can come up with a remedy so we can help him.
00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:05.120
Awesome.
00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:13.759
Um, so now we're gonna move on to the next topic for Leak here, leaks here is the pressurizing test.
00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:16.159
Let's talk a little bit about that pressurizing test.
00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:27.120
One of the most important things in leaks, I I everything is important, but people get tripped up on pressurizing because they don't understand it, and it it's it's easy.
00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:32.720
You plug one line, you test from the other line, and then you pressurize it.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:37.440
That is all pressurizing is, and there's safety that goes behind it.
00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:41.919
You got to follow the manufacturer's suggestions on how much pressure you put in.
00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:45.840
So if you're using a churny plug, it says it right on the plug.
00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:56.159
You you can't blow up more than 30 pounds when you inflate it, and you can't put back pressure more than 13 pounds because then they pop out and things become dangerous.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:57.840
Then safety.
00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:09.360
If you start pumping that thing up, you're building pressure inside there that if it accidentally comes out and someone's near it, you can get really hurt.
00:14:09.600 --> 00:14:11.600
So I've already broken a thumb.
00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:21.200
Um, one of my employees broke his index finger and a thumb, and it had to do with forgetting the safety rules, uh, misunderstanding.
00:14:21.440 --> 00:14:22.720
So here's one.
00:14:23.519 --> 00:14:26.080
And you know I'm all about safety here, Jeff.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:28.720
Yeah, I know, and that's why I was afraid to bring this one up.
00:14:28.960 --> 00:14:32.240
But it's it's something that it actually happens.
00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:42.240
So, on this particular um situation, um, my employee was pressurizing, but then he got distracted and walked away from the gauge.
00:14:42.559 --> 00:14:47.840
The gauge went all the way up over 35 pounds, which you can't do.
00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:53.600
When I we communicate back and forth, I go, is it okay if I take it off?
00:14:53.759 --> 00:14:56.399
I didn't hear him say no.
00:14:57.279 --> 00:15:02.639
And I went underwater, I took it out, it exploded out and broke my thumb.
00:15:02.960 --> 00:15:08.080
So, communication when you're with someone else, very specific, is it safe?
00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:09.600
Did you relieve the pressure?
00:15:09.840 --> 00:15:11.360
Can I take it out?
00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:12.639
So that's what we do now.
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:14.000
Can I take it out?
00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:15.519
And we get the yes or no.
00:15:15.600 --> 00:15:18.879
As soon as we get the yes or no, then we remove the plug.
00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:34.480
And and customers, what they love to do is they love to put their head over the plug and say, Oh, you have a plug in there, and that's usually when the plug pops out, so safety, yeah, safety.
00:15:34.879 --> 00:15:40.720
And I've talked, I've had on the podcast where me and Rob talked about pressurized filters and stuff like that.
00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:42.639
So, and the safety there.
00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:50.240
I mean, those have the yeah, they have the little warning stickers right on them on every pressurized filter.
00:15:50.480 --> 00:15:51.360
Who reads them?
00:15:51.440 --> 00:15:53.200
I don't know who reads those.
00:15:53.519 --> 00:15:56.639
Who not the pool, not the pool pro, right?
00:15:57.519 --> 00:16:02.000
I've been doing this for 10 years, I never had to worry about reading that label before.
00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:13.120
I'll just yeah, until something happens, but something does happen at some point to somebody, and some people have died with those lids popping off and and into their faces.
00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:15.600
But same thing here, you can get hurt.
00:16:15.840 --> 00:16:19.279
Anything else you want to mention about prep the pressurizing test?
00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:23.440
No, we do we offer a class on that, we put it on every once in a while.
00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:27.519
We have another one coming up in about three or four weeks.
00:16:27.759 --> 00:16:34.960
I saw yeah, it's just a basic where I just go over proper pressure testing, how to do a basic pressure test.
00:16:35.120 --> 00:16:39.840
Once you learn the basic, then you're able to take it to the Mac.
00:16:40.639 --> 00:16:45.840
So if you get this gigantic pool with all these water features, you understand the basics.
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:58.879
Plug one in, plug the other end, put the pressure in, piece of cake, the safety that goes along with it, and then you can't locate a broken line unless you have the basics of the pressurizing first.
00:16:59.679 --> 00:17:04.960
What was the class that you just taught online that I was teaching and missed it?
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:06.480
Was it the pressurizing test?
00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:07.279
Yeah, that was it.
00:17:07.359 --> 00:17:07.759
That was it.
00:17:07.839 --> 00:17:18.000
So, what we did is um we ran it, it was only supposed to be 45 minutes, and I as usual, when I give you a time, it's a lot more because I want to keep giving as much as I can.
00:17:18.400 --> 00:17:19.839
Getting more for your money, guys.
00:17:20.079 --> 00:17:21.039
You get it, yeah.
00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:24.240
Uh, so when I say 45 minutes, it's not 45 minutes.
00:17:24.400 --> 00:17:34.880
Um, it's it's a lot longer because I have a lot of information that I want to give, and um, I also I run the classes small so people could comment.
00:17:35.039 --> 00:17:43.599
I I want they're there to learn, and I am their servant, I am here to serve them, so they're not just paying for a class, I'm taking their money.
00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:52.480
I work for them, so I need the interaction so they can when they don't understand something, I explain it, and if it takes longer, it takes longer.
00:17:52.559 --> 00:17:54.319
That's just the way life is.
00:17:54.960 --> 00:18:03.920
All right, so our next topic for leaks is the electronic equipment that's used to do leak detection, right?
00:18:04.160 --> 00:18:15.920
So, one of the big misunderstandings is that the leak equipment does everything, so you just throw the hydrophone in the water and it's gonna find a leak.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:23.920
And it's it's a tool, everything that you have in your bucket in your truck is a tool, and you need to learn how to use each tool.
00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:39.680
So, um, if you watch my videos, um, I do videos where I I'll tell you we use electronic equipment, um, no, no brand names, because there's there's really only two in the pool industry in the United States that I know of.
00:18:39.839 --> 00:18:44.000
Um, they're both really good pieces of equipment, and I have both.
00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:47.839
Um, but it does not pick up everything.
00:18:48.079 --> 00:19:02.880
The leak makes a sound, the sound is a vibration, and if the vibration is too far away, or the vibration is not enough for the microphone to pick up because you have background noise and everything else, you're gonna miss the leak.
00:19:02.960 --> 00:19:05.519
So, you need the other techniques that go with it.
00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:06.880
Awesome.
00:19:07.200 --> 00:19:10.400
So you gotta get the right equipment, right?
00:19:10.559 --> 00:19:14.160
And there, you I mean, are you still die testing as well?
00:19:14.319 --> 00:19:16.960
Are you still doing the little die testing and all that too?
00:19:17.279 --> 00:19:26.079
Die testing is king, so you're looking for something invisible, which that's not electronic equipment, that's just doing the dive the pool, do the die testing.
00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:27.599
Where does it get pulled at?
00:19:27.920 --> 00:19:30.640
Yeah, so you don't yeah, some sometimes you dive in.
00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:32.160
I like to dive in.
00:19:32.240 --> 00:19:38.799
I'm in Florida, so and when it gets cold, you know, 80 degrees, I'm putting on the big suit.
00:19:39.119 --> 00:19:40.799
80 degrees is cold to us.
00:19:40.960 --> 00:19:41.839
Oh, that's freezing.
00:19:41.920 --> 00:19:42.960
What are you kidding me?
00:19:43.200 --> 00:19:46.799
Everybody else is like, Oh my god, that sounds so nice right now.
00:19:46.960 --> 00:19:48.400
Yeah, that's that's winter.
00:19:48.480 --> 00:19:51.039
I'm taking out the Arctic clothing and everything.
00:19:51.200 --> 00:19:55.759
Yeah, we like our bath, we like our bath water in our pools, guys, down here in Florida.
00:19:55.839 --> 00:20:01.359
If it's not like warm bath water, then it's like I I already went to my aunt and uncle's pool.
00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:06.799
I was like, nope, staying in the hot tub that was already heated up to like 98 degrees.
00:20:06.960 --> 00:20:09.440
I was like, I'm staying in the hot tub, pool's too cold.
00:20:09.680 --> 00:20:12.079
Yeah, yeah, that they hit 79.
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:15.119
Um, um, it's it's it was too cold for me.
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:16.079
I like the water.
00:20:16.880 --> 00:20:20.079
Denise Goff on Facebook Live says, Hi.
00:20:20.799 --> 00:20:25.440
Hey, do you have any questions about leak detection, Denise?
00:20:25.839 --> 00:20:29.440
Or about raccoons that we're gonna talk about in a little bit?
00:20:29.680 --> 00:20:31.920
Put it in the comments on Facebook.
00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:34.720
I'm actually monitoring the Facebook comments this time.
00:20:34.799 --> 00:20:35.599
I got smart.
00:20:36.160 --> 00:20:37.119
Awesome.
00:20:37.920 --> 00:20:48.079
Uh I I love to be in the water, so and you could see things from a different angle in the water, but you don't necessarily have to be in the water to do leak detection.
00:20:48.240 --> 00:20:50.640
Um, especially for the people up north.
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:54.000
It's too cold to get in the water all the time.
00:20:54.640 --> 00:20:59.119
So um there's ways of doing back to the die, which was the original question.
00:20:59.359 --> 00:21:01.920
The die is what makes the invisible visible.
00:21:02.400 --> 00:21:05.359
So we're using the die to watch the water movement.
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:09.279
So we need to see the water move out of the leak.
00:21:09.680 --> 00:21:13.599
And every pool has specific places where they leak.
00:21:13.759 --> 00:21:16.160
If you know where they are, you know where to put the die.
00:21:16.559 --> 00:21:21.440
And if you know how to use the die, you know how to watch it to see where the leak is at.
00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:22.960
Awesome.
00:21:23.279 --> 00:21:26.799
Anything else that you want to talk about with leaks here?
00:21:26.880 --> 00:21:27.839
We have a little bit of time.
00:21:27.920 --> 00:21:30.160
We can add some stuff.
00:21:30.480 --> 00:21:33.200
Am I allowed to talk about my training method?
00:21:33.440 --> 00:21:35.200
Yes, talk about your training method.
00:21:35.359 --> 00:21:57.039
It is don't give every don't give everything away, though, because I was gonna use this as everybody a hint is that Jeff is gonna be on a recorded podcast episode, not the live, the a recorded put up podcast episode, and that should be published.
00:21:57.200 --> 00:21:58.559
What did I say it was?
00:21:58.880 --> 00:21:59.759
This is the live we.
00:22:00.720 --> 00:22:04.240
Uh, not next week, October 19th, guys.
00:22:04.480 --> 00:22:16.799
If you're looking for Jeff talking about all about leaks and leak detection, and he's got uh training uh business leak business academy.
00:22:16.880 --> 00:22:18.240
He'll talk about that.
00:22:18.480 --> 00:22:27.039
Um, so we're hinting here with him being a guest anchor, and I want you to be on the lookout for his episode on October 19th.
00:22:27.759 --> 00:22:30.319
It's gonna be great, guys.
00:22:31.119 --> 00:22:32.880
Well, they'll be seeing more of me.
00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:37.680
Like I said, we're new, so we're our names getting out there, our reputation is building.
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:43.680
Um, I want to be known as the instructor for leaks, not not necessarily the guru because I'm not.
00:22:43.839 --> 00:22:45.039
I'm not a guru.
00:22:45.359 --> 00:22:46.880
Um, I just take a microphone.
00:22:47.920 --> 00:22:49.279
You're so modest, yeah.
00:22:49.759 --> 00:22:54.880
Because every time I meet, like even my students, my students come in, I learn something from them.
00:22:54.960 --> 00:22:57.039
I'm like, oh man, I never thought of that.
00:22:57.200 --> 00:22:58.240
Uh I do too.
00:22:58.400 --> 00:22:59.279
I do too.
00:22:59.519 --> 00:23:05.279
And if you put yourself out there as you're the expert, then you just set yourself up to not be the expert.
00:23:05.519 --> 00:23:08.160
So I'm I'm not, I want to learn, I keep learning.
00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:20.400
My students teach me, other people in the industry teach me, and uh this industry, there's so much to do in this industry that you can never get bored if you want to keep learning, it just keeps going.
00:23:20.960 --> 00:23:26.559
But training method this is something I've developed over years and years and years.
00:23:26.799 --> 00:23:34.400
So I used to be a college adjunct professor, um and that's where I learned how to teach adults.
00:23:35.200 --> 00:23:57.680
So learning from other instructors, I developed this method of teaching adults, and originally I called it the speed of light training, and I changed it to the stretch method, and this is the reason if you ever take a rubber band and you stretch it as far as you can and you let it go, it never retracts to the same size because that's what I'm trying to do with your mind.
00:23:57.759 --> 00:23:59.680
I'm trying to stretch as far as I can go.
00:23:59.759 --> 00:24:07.440
You're not gonna remember all of it, but when you leave me and it goes back, you learned a lot more than you had when you came to me.
00:24:07.759 --> 00:24:23.119
And the way I do it is I show you what you have to do, then I walk you through doing it, and then I take a step back, have you do it with a little guidance, then I have you do it on your own with some pressure.
00:24:23.359 --> 00:24:24.960
Then the pressure is very easy.
00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:30.400
I'll take you to a pool and I'll say, now when I do my training, it's on real pools, real jobs.
00:24:30.640 --> 00:24:32.720
I don't know whether we're gonna find a leak.
00:24:32.799 --> 00:24:34.240
I don't know where the leak is at.
00:24:34.400 --> 00:24:38.720
All I know is that the customer says their pool's leaking, they put the hose in every week.
00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:40.240
Go find it.
00:24:40.559 --> 00:24:47.200
So one of the last on the last day, your last pool is usually here.
00:24:47.279 --> 00:24:52.319
You are go do it, and then they have to teach once they get through that.
00:24:52.400 --> 00:24:53.680
Now they have to teach back to me.
00:24:53.759 --> 00:24:54.960
Okay, what did you do?
00:24:55.200 --> 00:25:16.240
Teach me back what you did, and that's where that rubber band is no longer its original size when you get to teach back, but there's more to it, and and uh coastal pools is on, and yeah, I saw him post Coastal Waves Pools said, Sweet, been waiting for that podcast to be released.
00:25:16.319 --> 00:25:20.400
So he's now you know when it on the timeline it's coming out.
00:25:20.640 --> 00:25:25.680
And earlier, Denise wanted to comment, and I like to give her credit because she's on.
00:25:25.920 --> 00:25:29.680
She said, '80 is too cold for the pool.
00:25:30.160 --> 00:25:31.599
Yes, yes, all right.
00:25:31.759 --> 00:25:33.519
I agree, put the heater on.
00:25:33.759 --> 00:25:38.480
All right, so get let's get back to the the you were talking about the elastic band.
00:25:39.279 --> 00:25:48.079
Yes, the the biggest thing is um, and that's why I mentioned coastal pools because he went through my training.
00:25:48.319 --> 00:25:51.039
Is I I throw so much out.
00:25:52.880 --> 00:25:54.400
I throw so much out.
00:25:54.559 --> 00:26:04.319
I and it's not it's not like you don't come, we have breakfast, and we talk, and then we do something, then we have lunch, and I I give you a sandwich.
00:26:04.559 --> 00:26:06.079
No, we're we're working.
00:26:06.240 --> 00:26:14.240
Okay, if you need food, we'll stop bringing you bring you food, and I'm working you until it gets dark or it gets really late because I want you exhausted.
00:26:14.400 --> 00:26:27.359
I want you so exhausted that you think you can't remember what's going on, and you just start spontaneously saying, Oh, yeah, this, and then oh yeah, and then we look at the scammer here, and then we got the five points of the light that we got to look here.
00:26:27.759 --> 00:26:33.200
When you're able to do that when you're tired, your mind has absorbed it.
00:26:33.519 --> 00:26:42.000
So this was a method I that I taught um or I used when I was an instructor, and then I brought it into the leak academy.
00:26:42.160 --> 00:26:48.720
That's why in two days I can teach a lot more than most instructors do in a whole entire week.
00:26:48.880 --> 00:26:50.400
Now, do you remember everything?
00:26:50.559 --> 00:26:53.119
No, can I teach you 20 years of experience?
00:26:53.599 --> 00:26:54.799
Absolutely not.
00:26:55.039 --> 00:27:02.160
Can I get you the basic where you have the confidence that once you leave me, you got I can do this, all right?
00:27:02.400 --> 00:27:04.319
And then I'm also here for support.
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:07.920
I don't just leave my students and say, All right, you're on your own.
00:27:08.160 --> 00:27:12.880
Uh and you can talk to Franco, you can text me, you can call me.
00:27:12.960 --> 00:27:22.000
Now I'm not able to answer the phone right away, but I will get back to you, I'll walk you through something, I'll have you send me pictures, and I'll help you.
00:27:22.079 --> 00:27:25.039
And then once you get going, you don't need me anymore.
00:27:25.279 --> 00:27:26.480
And that's the whole idea.
00:27:26.559 --> 00:27:37.359
I don't want you to the podcast episode that we're gonna have up next month is gonna talk about like even the revenue growth that you can possibly see with adding leak detection to your business.
00:27:37.519 --> 00:27:39.440
Remember, we talked about that, so yeah.
00:27:39.680 --> 00:27:41.039
I don't want to bring it up here.
00:27:41.200 --> 00:27:43.359
We're gonna the we're teasing here.
00:27:43.920 --> 00:27:47.279
Get everybody to listen to that good podcast episode.
00:27:47.359 --> 00:27:48.799
So we have some good listeners.
00:27:49.039 --> 00:27:53.039
Denise Goff said on Facebook, would love to do his training.
00:27:53.200 --> 00:27:56.000
So, where can they find training?
00:27:56.480 --> 00:27:58.799
Where where would they find your training at?
00:27:59.200 --> 00:28:00.960
Um, leak business academy.
00:28:01.119 --> 00:28:03.359

They can get to my page.
00:28:05.119 --> 00:28:09.920
Um, also just talking to us, so they can get the phone number that's on there.
00:28:10.079 --> 00:28:10.720
Call us up.
00:28:10.960 --> 00:28:14.799
Leak and subsurface locators is our actual service business.
00:28:14.960 --> 00:28:17.119
You can call it's the same phone number.
00:28:17.279 --> 00:28:19.119
Um, it's the same business.
00:28:19.279 --> 00:28:25.039
It's just we had to separate it because we're we're an actual school, so we had to have the separation.
00:28:25.920 --> 00:28:30.720
Um and you could just call up and then you'll talk to Sandra.
00:28:30.799 --> 00:28:33.519
Sandra can give you a whole bunch of information because she runs.
00:28:33.599 --> 00:28:34.799
I'm at her desk right now.
00:28:35.440 --> 00:28:37.279
My desk is in the corner over there.
00:28:37.440 --> 00:28:42.880
Um, she runs the whole inside, she's actually uh built this whole business.
00:28:43.039 --> 00:28:46.240
I'm the worker, um, the employee, she's the boss.
00:28:46.559 --> 00:28:50.240
Oh, you guys are working together, you guys make an awesome team, too.
00:28:51.200 --> 00:28:57.519
Well, and she knows so much about this business, and then when you need to talk to me, just I'll just come and talk.
00:28:57.680 --> 00:29:00.160
I'm always available at some point.
00:29:00.480 --> 00:29:02.319
Um, there was something else.
00:29:02.640 --> 00:29:05.599
Oh, the podcast has three secrets on it.
00:29:05.920 --> 00:29:07.119
Yeah, three secrets.
00:29:07.200 --> 00:29:08.559
We're not gonna tell what those are, though.
00:29:08.720 --> 00:29:09.279
No, we're not.
00:29:09.680 --> 00:29:22.960
Jeez, there's three secrets you want to know, and that whole podcast will be about uh hit leak detection and his business academy, and all what you're gonna learn from from that as well.
00:29:23.200 --> 00:29:31.519
So um, I wanted to give a shout out to J Money55 on uh Instagram live 305 pool service.
00:29:31.599 --> 00:29:33.920
I mentioned Coastal Wave Pools.
00:29:34.160 --> 00:29:42.640
Welcome, Holton uh Commercial Pool is on, and Ace Pools and Spa joined as well.
00:29:42.799 --> 00:29:44.960
So welcome to the live podcast.
00:29:45.359 --> 00:29:48.880
Alexis2824 just joined us.
00:29:49.119 --> 00:29:52.079
Welcome to the live Let's Talk About Pools Podcast.
00:29:52.160 --> 00:29:59.039
This is exciting as we keep growing because I didn't start the live podcast until about I think April-ish.
00:29:59.920 --> 00:30:10.079
And so twice twice a month, can't go crazy with it, but trying to grow slow, things that grow slowly just last and work really well.
00:30:10.319 --> 00:30:21.759
So we had like nobody listening or coming on, and now we got kind of some regulars, so uh, and I see your wife posted, you're so sweet, thank you.
00:30:22.559 --> 00:30:24.799
You're thank you're sweet too, Sandra.
00:30:24.880 --> 00:30:28.240
I know you can hear me out in the corner over there.
00:30:28.880 --> 00:30:33.279
All right, so um that this has been such an awesome topic.
00:30:33.440 --> 00:30:35.599
Everybody seems to be really excited about it.
00:30:35.839 --> 00:30:46.960
So I know everybody saw me post yesterday with the graphic for the live podcast, the cute little raccoon on the edge of the uh of the edge of the pool.
00:30:47.119 --> 00:30:50.000
And I'm gonna give credit for this idea.
00:30:50.160 --> 00:30:54.000
Uh, earlier in the was it late last week?
00:30:54.319 --> 00:30:56.559
Early this week, I don't remember.
00:30:56.720 --> 00:30:58.480
Um, I think it was late last week.
00:30:58.640 --> 00:31:10.240
One of my pool pros from Texas said, This is my day today, and sent me pictures of a dead raccoon floating around in this pool he showed up at.
00:31:10.400 --> 00:31:15.279
And I was like, you know, I haven't really like done anything about raccoons specifically.
00:31:15.359 --> 00:31:18.000
So this can be my public health part here.
00:31:18.160 --> 00:31:24.160
And you said you kind of write about it and had an aha moment, Jeff, about raccoons.
00:31:25.680 --> 00:31:33.440
No, when we talked earlier, um, when you were explaining about the podcast, I never knew how dangerous it was.
00:31:33.599 --> 00:31:39.920
Um, because we have raccoons in pools here all the time, dead rats and birds and skimmers.
00:31:40.160 --> 00:31:44.400
Um, so I never realized how date, but you're gonna talk about it.
00:31:44.480 --> 00:31:51.440
So I don't want to raccoons are different than every other critter that you kind of just mentioned in a pool.
00:31:51.759 --> 00:32:11.839
So, per CDC guidelines, if you've got any of those other critters, spiders, lizards, possums, whatever, they're treated like a solid poop incident from a human being, which is what 2 ppm of chlorine for 30 minutes, and it should be good.
00:32:11.920 --> 00:32:14.880
You clean it up, burns, bird poop, same thing.
00:32:14.960 --> 00:32:16.799
But raccoons are very specific.
00:32:16.960 --> 00:32:25.039
So if you walk up to a pool, you find a dead raccoon, or you saw the raccoon in the pool, what do they like to do, Jeff?
00:32:25.200 --> 00:32:28.160
They like to go the first or second step and do what?
00:32:28.799 --> 00:32:32.640
They like to clean their hands and poo all over the place.
00:32:32.880 --> 00:32:41.119
They take a dump in the pool while they're in there washing their hands, so they think they're being clean, which they kind of are.
00:32:41.359 --> 00:32:52.000
They're doing better than my nine-year-old son, who will go to the bathroom and come out when we're at a restaurant and claim that he washed his hands, and we're like, they're not damp at all.
00:32:52.079 --> 00:32:54.559
And he gets upset and we send them right back.
00:32:54.799 --> 00:33:07.359
Raccoons are trying to be cleaner than my son, nine-year-old son is uh at cleaning their hands, but they're not smart, so they take a dump while they're there, and it seems like a good place for them, you know, and then they're gone.
00:33:07.440 --> 00:33:11.359
So, what do you do as a pool pro with anything with raccoons?
00:33:11.519 --> 00:33:14.799
Dead raccoon, raccoon in the pool, raccoon poops in the pool.
00:33:14.960 --> 00:33:19.440
Uh, discovering a dead animal in a swimming pool, I know is unpleasant.
00:33:19.519 --> 00:33:28.720
And Rocky Housden, uh, my awesome pool pro from Tetis is the one that sent me the pictures and gave me this whole idea to talk about raccoons.
00:33:28.799 --> 00:33:36.720
And I know it's not the first time anybody's ever talked about it, um, but it's it's not necessarily an emergency.
00:33:36.960 --> 00:33:43.279
So, you know, birds, frogs, rodents, snakes, other animals will occasionally end up in the pool as well.
00:33:43.599 --> 00:33:58.240
The CDC says most dead animals found in swimming pools don't pose a significant health risk to swimmers, and you're just gonna treat it as a solid coop incident 2 ppm for 30 minutes.
00:33:58.319 --> 00:33:59.680
But raccoons are different.
00:33:59.839 --> 00:34:11.920
Whether you discover a dead raccoon, raccoon species on the steps, um, the incident's gonna deserve uh special attention because raccoons carry a very specific round worm, guys.
00:34:12.239 --> 00:34:19.840
And I will say it wrong because they give these funky names, you know, genus species names, these scientists, right?
00:34:19.920 --> 00:34:25.840
And I know I'm a scientist, um, but you know, I don't say even people's names right.
00:34:26.000 --> 00:34:35.920
It's something like Baelus Sicarious Procyonis, commonly known as the ra raccoon round worm.
00:34:36.079 --> 00:34:39.360
And this is an important lesson for pool pros, and it's simple.
00:34:39.519 --> 00:34:44.079
Don't assume adding more chlorine is gonna solve your this this problem, okay?
00:34:44.320 --> 00:34:50.480
Because chlorine cannot inactivate or kill this round worm, okay?
00:34:50.639 --> 00:34:52.639
So people come, what does it do to people?
00:34:52.719 --> 00:35:08.159
An infected raccoon can shed these roundworm eggs and it's poopy, or even when it dies, people become infected by accidentally swallowing the eggs from the the uh water or off objects that are in the water.
00:35:08.400 --> 00:35:16.960
Even though human infections are rare, it can be very serious and can infect your eyes, your organs, and your nervous system.
00:35:17.199 --> 00:35:22.960
And there's another important detail the eggs are not immediately infectious when passed in fresh feces.
00:35:23.039 --> 00:35:29.440
So the CDC states that they generally require about two to four weeks in the environment to become infective.
00:35:29.599 --> 00:35:32.800
So prompt cleanup is what's important, right?
00:35:33.039 --> 00:35:34.079
Because of that.
00:35:34.400 --> 00:35:41.360
So for a pool operator, perhaps the most important fact is chlorine does not kill the roundworm eggs.
00:35:41.599 --> 00:35:50.079
Chlorine will kill many of the other germs a raccoon might introduce to the water, but the CDC specifically says the chlorine is not going to do it.
00:35:50.320 --> 00:36:00.320
So that is why the raccoon incident should be treated as simply, not as simply as any other dead animal or a routine fecal incident.
00:36:00.639 --> 00:36:03.119
So, what does the CDC say to do?
00:36:03.280 --> 00:36:04.159
What should we do?
00:36:04.400 --> 00:36:09.199
Close the pool, make sure if it's a private pool, you let the customers know.
00:36:09.440 --> 00:36:09.760
Okay.
00:36:10.239 --> 00:36:18.000
CDC recommends um, if you can, you know, contacting local animal control, but you can't always, you know, do that.
00:36:18.159 --> 00:36:33.760
So you're gonna put on your disposable gloves, you're gonna net out and get whatever out, remove the raccoon from the pool, place it and anything else into double garbage bags and remove it and get rid of it properly.
00:36:33.920 --> 00:36:38.400
Secure the bags, put them in a sealed trash container, and immediately wash your hands.
00:36:38.639 --> 00:36:40.079
Now, what happens?
00:36:40.320 --> 00:36:43.599
The most likely scenario, you're not gonna catch the raccoon, right?
00:36:43.679 --> 00:36:48.239
So you're not gonna be able to test it if it's pooped and gone, it's not dead.
00:36:48.559 --> 00:36:56.639
So the CDC, the the option one that's most likely gonna happen is you're filtering the water, and it's about turnovers, right?
00:36:57.199 --> 00:37:01.920
So filter the pool for a minimum of 24 hours.
00:37:02.559 --> 00:37:03.760
That what does that mean?
00:37:03.840 --> 00:37:08.320
How what's the average, Jeff, for a residential pump, pool pump running?
00:37:08.559 --> 00:37:11.199
Here we're doing eight hours, eight hours.
00:37:11.280 --> 00:37:13.039
Let's just say six to eight hours.
00:37:13.119 --> 00:37:15.679
We'll say seven, whatever, not sit seven.
00:37:15.760 --> 00:37:17.519
Ha ha, had to do it, guys.
00:37:18.079 --> 00:37:21.360
Um, go to Walmart.
00:37:21.440 --> 00:37:24.719
They're selling a shirt now uh for the sit seven club.
00:37:25.920 --> 00:37:28.079
Husband bought one and my daughter bought one.
00:37:28.320 --> 00:37:29.519
All right, back on track.
00:37:29.599 --> 00:37:31.920
I always get on my little fun tangents.
00:37:32.159 --> 00:37:35.519
So you gotta take the pins out of the time clock, don't you?
00:37:35.760 --> 00:37:46.000
You gotta explain to the customer why the pins are out, why their pump is running for a full 24 hours because they're shutting it off.
00:37:46.239 --> 00:37:53.199
Or if there's a variable speed pump there, you need to make sure it's running at full speed for 24 hours, okay?
00:37:53.360 --> 00:37:55.599
Not dial it, let it dial down.
00:37:55.920 --> 00:38:04.159
After you've done that full 24 hours of filtering the water, everything goes to the filter, it captures the the eggs and the round worms.
00:38:04.320 --> 00:38:06.159
So you got to backwash a filter.
00:38:06.320 --> 00:38:10.480
Um, if you got to take out a cartridge filter, then you gotta hose that off, right?
00:38:10.559 --> 00:38:11.599
It's not backwashing.
00:38:11.679 --> 00:38:13.199
You should be wearing gloves.
00:38:13.440 --> 00:38:22.480
Replace your filter media if possible, place the discarded filter media in the double garbage bags, remove your gloves and put them into the bags as well.
00:38:22.880 --> 00:38:28.800
Um what you know, we got to be careful if we start talking about personal protective equipment.
00:38:28.960 --> 00:38:30.639
What is recommended?
00:38:30.880 --> 00:38:41.039
Um, especially with like a cartridge filter where you could have over spray while you're spraying it, and maybe it comes into your face, or you've got some of that water.
00:38:41.199 --> 00:38:46.320
Um, you really should have a dust mask on, gloves on, so that you're not breathing it in.
00:38:46.400 --> 00:38:50.480
You don't want to risk breathing anything in that might have some of those round wormaids.
00:38:50.719 --> 00:38:54.639
So we're not asking for a full hazmat suit or anything, guys.
00:38:54.719 --> 00:39:01.119
We're just asking for a dust mask and some disposable gloves at most, okay?
00:39:01.280 --> 00:39:04.800
We're talking about respiratory protection and stuff like that.
00:39:05.119 --> 00:39:08.239
Um, anything else you want to add, Jeff?
00:39:10.000 --> 00:39:10.480
Nope.
00:39:10.719 --> 00:39:15.440
I learned a lot from just the conversation from yesterday and from today.
00:39:15.679 --> 00:39:22.559
Um, I can't tell you how many pools we go to, and that whole top step is just covered in it.
00:39:22.960 --> 00:39:26.719
It looks like floating berries, like on the top surface of the pool.
00:39:27.679 --> 00:39:30.880
It's like they swallowed the berries, and then just didn't it's like corn.
00:39:31.119 --> 00:39:33.920
Like their body takes something but not all of it, and it comes out.
00:39:34.000 --> 00:39:37.199
It's like we poop out corn kernels, right?
00:39:37.440 --> 00:39:39.519
Our body doesn't process those either.
00:39:39.599 --> 00:39:40.960
I don't even know why we eat corn.
00:39:41.039 --> 00:39:42.159
What do we get from it?
00:39:42.400 --> 00:39:45.599
But the raccoons, it's the same thing with their little poopies.
00:39:45.760 --> 00:39:52.480
They love they love berries and stuff around, and that's what they're eating and stuff, other than the trash and our trash cans.
00:39:52.559 --> 00:40:00.000
We have resident raccoons that come in our trash cans all the time, so they're gonna be around, their animals aren't going away, you're gonna deal with them.
00:40:00.159 --> 00:40:09.199
I mean, one of the crazy ones I ever heard, not raccoon-related animal-wise, was um, they kept trying to figure out was pooping and peeing in their backyard pool.
00:40:09.360 --> 00:40:11.840
So they put up, like, you know, ring camera or whatever.
00:40:12.000 --> 00:40:21.519
And it was a bobcat that was coming up to the edge of the pool and taking a dump and peeing in it almost every day in at night, you know.
00:40:21.679 --> 00:40:29.119
So they wake up in the morning, there's a poop floating around in their pool, and they're like, What is doing this every night?
00:40:29.360 --> 00:40:38.320
And you know, the cat can scale the fence, it can get into the yard, and I don't, it has a fetish for pooping and peeing and in pools, I guess.
00:40:38.559 --> 00:40:40.559
So, yeah, it's pretty gross.
00:40:40.719 --> 00:40:42.400
I agree, Sandra.
00:40:42.800 --> 00:40:45.599
So, I mean, that's what I got today, guys.
00:40:45.679 --> 00:40:47.679
And I will have a nice blog article.
00:40:47.840 --> 00:40:54.960
Thank you, Rocky, uh, Aqua Clean Pools, uh, for uh giving that great idea.
00:40:55.039 --> 00:41:03.920
And I'm gonna have a really nice long blog article about raccoons and what to do, and it'll talk a lot more detail than what I brought up here.
00:41:04.079 --> 00:41:06.239
So that'll go up this week.
00:41:06.480 --> 00:41:11.119
Um, it usually goes up October, like the first of the month.
00:41:11.440 --> 00:41:20.639
So um, I put try to put one blog article up a month on the website, but I'll link it and post it onto social media for you guys, like my Black Widow one.
00:41:20.719 --> 00:41:22.639
You saw my Black Widow one, right?
00:41:23.039 --> 00:41:25.440
Black widows and the skimmer lids and stuff like that.
00:41:25.599 --> 00:41:25.920
Let's see.
00:41:26.000 --> 00:41:30.000
Denise Scobb said, raccoons love the open pools.
00:41:30.159 --> 00:41:32.880
Thanks for the info on the cleanup of their poo.
00:41:33.039 --> 00:41:38.880
I always run for 24 hours and clean the filter, but didn't know about the worms.
00:41:39.440 --> 00:41:40.719
So there we go.
00:41:40.960 --> 00:41:46.639
It's all about that's a public health thing, and that I love talking public health, can't you tell?
00:41:47.039 --> 00:41:48.880
I love the bacteria.
00:41:49.039 --> 00:41:51.039
People don't realize that you can get sick.
00:41:51.199 --> 00:41:58.000
General people don't realize you can get sick from pool water, and it's all different ways and different things, you know.
00:41:58.079 --> 00:42:00.159
So it's it's very interesting to me.
00:42:00.400 --> 00:42:04.159
Public health was a very fun job I did for 17 years.
00:42:04.480 --> 00:42:08.480
Loved every day I was there doing it, the actual job.
00:42:08.719 --> 00:42:17.440
Maybe not always all the other it's you know, things out there with people that you had to deal with and stuff, but the the job was super interesting.
00:42:17.840 --> 00:42:33.360
Regulatory side, and then taking the public health and putting it together when you can take public health and then be able to explain why violations are what they are on out of the public pool code, and you can it's connect the dots with public health and safety.
00:42:33.440 --> 00:42:36.880
That's how you get people to correct violations on their public facilities.
00:42:36.960 --> 00:42:38.000
Do you agree, Jeff?
00:42:38.320 --> 00:42:40.400
I do, yes, absolutely.
00:42:40.800 --> 00:42:51.599
And and I know you you haven't done like you've been doing leak and subsurface locators for a long time now, but did you started as a service company, correct?
00:42:51.920 --> 00:42:53.920
Over 20 years ago.
00:42:54.239 --> 00:42:58.480
Don't ask me any questions about chemicals because I don't hear anything, Jeff.
00:42:58.639 --> 00:43:01.199
I don't even know how to test chemicals anymore.
00:43:03.119 --> 00:43:10.719
Uh your uh Sandra said, yes, sometimes they want us to jump in green pools and don't understand why we say no.
00:43:11.840 --> 00:43:15.599
Um, yeah, and and they're green because of algae, right?
00:43:15.840 --> 00:43:21.280
And if you've ever taken a good pool operator course, we don't talk about algae in chapter four.
00:43:21.519 --> 00:43:29.360
It's not that it gets people sick, it's just an indicator organism that conditions aren't being maintained really well in that pool.
00:43:29.519 --> 00:43:35.920
And if it's present, all those recreational water illnesses that do get people sick are most likely present as well.
00:43:36.079 --> 00:43:39.360
They're gonna be present right along with the algae in the pool.
00:43:39.599 --> 00:43:46.880
So algae is a slip hazard and it's gross, and people don't want, you know, are gonna complain about it.
00:43:47.039 --> 00:43:50.880
It's probably your biggest complaint as a pool company, right?
00:43:51.039 --> 00:43:51.519
Anywhere.
00:43:51.760 --> 00:43:53.760
People just want to be able to go swimming.
00:43:54.800 --> 00:43:57.039
Well, that's all I got for today.
00:43:57.199 --> 00:44:06.000
We were in 43 minutes, and I want everybody to be on the lookout for his podcast again coming out on I think I said October 19th.
00:44:06.400 --> 00:44:21.599
It'll be published uh with Jeff and me, but all about leaks and the leak uh leak business academy and his classes and how how you can get into that because I think this is a really good thing to add on to people's uh businesses.
00:44:21.840 --> 00:44:22.159
Oh, yeah.
00:44:22.400 --> 00:44:34.000
And he's doing these classes online virtual as well as in person, and you can go to what's the website again, leak detection leakbusinessacademy.com.
00:44:34.400 --> 00:44:43.119
I keep adding a word, leak businessacademy.com, and the really long one, leak and subsurface locators.com.
00:44:43.599 --> 00:44:44.960
Awesome, awesome.
00:44:45.280 --> 00:44:50.239
Well, thank you for being on the podcast as a guest anchor today, Jeff.
00:44:50.400 --> 00:44:52.639
I uh it is awesome having you on.
00:44:52.719 --> 00:44:56.559
I was so excited when you volunteered when you saw me post about it.
00:44:56.880 --> 00:45:05.840
And I'm hoping keeping my fingers crossed that Rob will be back at him with his uh his uh personality that he brings in.
00:45:06.000 --> 00:45:11.199
Uh, he's always got something on me, so he keeps me in in my place.
00:45:12.719 --> 00:45:13.360
Thank you very much.
00:45:13.519 --> 00:45:14.000
It was awesome.
00:45:14.800 --> 00:45:21.119
And we're gonna leave you guys with our outro, and and then we'll see you in two weeks.
00:45:21.280 --> 00:45:30.400
Uh, hopefully, me and Rob on the next live Let's Talk About Fools podcast, which should be uh Tuesday, October 6th at 10 a.m.

00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:18.960
Now let's jump right in.
00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:27.760
Welcome everybody today to the Let's Talk About Pools Live podcast.
00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:36.399
And yes, yet again, my regular uh co-anchor, you guys are so used to joking with me, which is Rob Stewart.
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:43.439
I'm missing him here two times in a row, but I'm enjoying having guest co-anchors on with me.
00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:54.240
And today I have Jeff David with League Business Academy and also Leak and Subservice Locators out of Florida here.
00:00:54.399 --> 00:00:55.359
Welcome today, Jeff.
00:00:55.439 --> 00:00:56.000
How are you?
00:00:56.320 --> 00:00:57.840
Thank you, Laura.
00:00:58.240 --> 00:00:59.439
So I'm awesome.
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:03.600
As I said, we're gonna we announce what we're gonna talk about.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:08.640
He's such a specialist when it comes to leaks, and it's such an interesting topic to talk about.
00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:15.680
So we thought we would educate a little bit today on the live uh podcast and talk about leaks today.
00:01:15.760 --> 00:01:18.799
And then at the very end, I will bring up my public.
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:21.840
I have to bring up my public health topic, right?
00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:24.159
That's my background.
00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:28.719
You know leaks, I know public health stuff and pools.
00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:31.599
So it's kind of like weird topics here.
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:37.519
So tell everybody a little bit about you so they know a little bit about you, Jeff, before we get started.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:41.680
Okay, of course, Jeff David, um, living in Palm Beach, Florida.
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:48.959
We own Leak and Subsurface Locators, which is a family leak locating business, been in it about 20 years.
00:01:49.200 --> 00:02:04.319
Family's always been in the pool industry, and then we developed the Leak Business Academy about a year ago to start teaching people how to do pool leaks because we found there was a part in the market that was missing.
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:11.919
Everyone's selling equipment, but no one's teaching how to actually do pool leaks, so we wanted to fill that gap.
00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:24.639
Awesome, and and it's something that you you agree is something nice that a pool company could like add to their repertoire of services that they have.
00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:32.639
Your cleaning pools, you might be doing your service contractor, you might be doing some repairs, and then you're like, what else can I add?
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:37.360
And I know I've talked about inspections before uh on the podcast.
00:02:37.439 --> 00:02:43.599
So this is the other thing that's really enticing that uh people don't think about sometimes.
00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:55.039
Well, adding other things because you already have the customer, the customer already trusts you, they don't want to go through the research of trying to find someone they don't know.
00:02:55.360 --> 00:02:57.599
So why not take the business?
00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:20.159
And if if anything, if you have a big route or a big company, knowing what a leak guy is supposed to do helps you because if you go and subcontract out or refer out a leak detection some person and they do a bad job because you didn't know what they were supposed to do, it kind of makes you look bad.
00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:27.759
So if you're in construction, you have a big service company, or you're just the individual person, just the knowledge.
00:03:27.840 --> 00:03:35.599
The more knowledge you have, the better service you give your customers, and basically the bigger your business gets, the more money you make.
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:38.159
That that's very true.
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:39.680
So we're gonna talk about that.
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:43.120
We're gonna talk about like mistakes with leak detection.
00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:57.039
We're gonna be talking today about the pressurizing tests a little bit, and then some of the electronic equipment used for uh leak detection, and then my little public health thing, we're gonna talk about raccoons and pools.
00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:04.400
So before we totally get into that, I don't want to forget about our strategic podcast sponsor today.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:13.280
Um, I always get into these topics and then I forget, and I end up playing their sponsorship video later on in the podcast.
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:17.439
And I really want to, you know, give them their kudos in the beginning here.
00:04:17.759 --> 00:04:24.399
So our strategic podcast sponsor has been since the beginning of 2026 now, uh, Pool Brain.
00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:29.439
Thank you, Pool Brain, for uh, you know, they are investing in education.
00:04:29.600 --> 00:04:39.920
This is education through a medium that's different, more available online um for our podcast listeners and anybody who joins in as well.
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:51.360
So listen in to what they have to uh share, and then we'll be right back after uh we hear from Pool Brain.
00:04:52.160 --> 00:04:58.959
I talked to so many customers that are using this app for this feature, this app for this, and this app for this, and said, Well, why don't you just use pool brain?
00:04:59.040 --> 00:04:59.759
Because we can do it all.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:01.439
I absolutely love Pool Brain.
00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:03.360
There's not a better app on the market.
00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:06.800
We've tested a ton of different ones and we landed on Pool Brain for a reason.
00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:09.439
We have well over 6,000 pools on PoolBrain.
00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:13.600
We've been on a few other platforms in the past, and this one's been five power, the best one we've been on.
00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:21.439
Very intuitive and easily used for full professinals and very obviously made for full professionals, and uh love it.
00:05:22.160 --> 00:05:24.639
I love a lot of full brain babies.
00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:36.560
Yeah, I think that's everybody.
00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:51.279
Welcome back.
00:05:51.600 --> 00:05:54.240
I love, I'm not gonna use the bad word.
00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:57.439
I love pool brain, they are awesome over there.
00:05:57.519 --> 00:05:59.519
They got some awesome people that work there.
00:05:59.680 --> 00:06:03.920
I love working with them and them being part of the podcast.
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:09.519
They're a strategic uh diamond educational partner with Space Coast Pool School as well.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:11.839
So, um, as well as Aquastar.
00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:14.160
So thank you, Aquastar, for that as well.
00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:22.000
But they pool brain is the only sponsor of the Let's Talk About Pools podcast live and recorded.
00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:23.120
So thank you very much.
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:26.800
It's been a great year with you guys, and I appreciate it.
00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:34.160
And uh got gotta bring up my strategic uh apparel sponsor, which is Revved Up Apparel.
00:06:34.319 --> 00:06:36.240
He's right out of Florida, Jeff.
00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:42.480
He's a pool, he has a pool company, service company over on the west coast of Florida.
00:06:42.720 --> 00:06:49.680
Uh the Douglases, they're wonderful, and they made my shirts for Space Coast Pool School and for the podcast.
00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:54.879
So I'll be wearing those around at trade conferences this coming season.
00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:57.600
I can't wait starting November through February.
00:06:57.839 --> 00:06:59.759
Woohoo! I wrote it down.
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:00.800
Revved up.
00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:02.720
Yes, revved up apparel.
00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:03.920
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:04.639
They're beautiful.
00:07:04.720 --> 00:07:08.399
I mean, look, look, look at how the color gradient and stuff.
00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:11.040
It's like water, they can design anything.
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:11.839
It's it's cool.
00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:14.720
And they do collared shirts, they're dry fit.
00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:23.519
You could do the v-neck, they do uh the the hoodie, you know, where you have the hoodie thing to get out of the sun, they have the sunscreen protection.
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:25.360
Go go look them up, they're great.
00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:35.439
So I wanted to give them kudos as well because they uh have been great as an apparel sponsor for uh both Space Coast Pool School and Let's Talk About Pools podcast.
00:07:35.519 --> 00:07:37.680
So I know everybody wants to get right in.
00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:42.480
Before we do, I like to say hi to some of our people that are in listening.
00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:46.639
So on Instagram right now, we have Coastal Wave Pools that joined.
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:51.120
We got Rocka Pavers, George 88.
00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:54.639
This one, I'm not gonna fall for it.
00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:56.240
I finally met her in person.
00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:00.480
I was called, I was calling her the wrong name on Instagram.
00:08:00.639 --> 00:08:02.399
It's Day by the Pool.
00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:04.480
Hey, I got it right, Day.
00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:07.120
And then pool guy beard is on.
00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:16.480
Welcome guys to the live podcast that's streaming on Instagram, and anybody on Facebook join us, anybody on uh LinkedIn join us.
00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:27.040
We're on Lauren Broom on in on uh Facebook, Lauren Broom on LinkedIn, and CPO classes live on uh Instagram every other week, guys.
00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:29.519
So uh thank you for being here.
00:08:29.759 --> 00:08:36.720
All right, so let's talk a little, Jeff, about some mistakes that commonly happen with leak detection.
00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:42.799
Okay, so I have three common mistakes, and the biggest thing is a system.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:46.559
You have to have a system when you're doing pool leaks.
00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:53.120
Without the system, you're gonna be all over the place, you're gonna be missing stuff, and the biggest thing is time.
00:08:53.600 --> 00:09:04.159
If you don't follow a system, it's gonna take you three to four times longer to do a complete leak detection than if you have a system where you can actually go step by step by step.
00:09:04.559 --> 00:09:11.840
And if you skip a step, you always know you can go back and then go through the whole entire thing and finish up.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:16.399
That's one second mistake training.
00:09:17.039 --> 00:09:23.279
So it's not just going to one person and learning something myself.
00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:26.399
I'm a trainer, but I still go to training.
00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:32.720
I try to learn as much as I can because I am not the guru, I am not the total expert.
00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:46.559
There's always something I can learn, and from talking from having the school and talking to people around the world, um, I'm learning that pools are built differently, the way they do stuff is differently, and their equipment they use is different.
00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:52.080
And it's things that I never knew before, and I thought I knew quite a bit, and I don't.
00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:59.759
Um, so training just all the training, even if it's outside of pool leaks, how to how to fix a pump.
00:09:59.919 --> 00:10:04.879
And because a lot of times you have leaks of pumps, the client wants to know how do I fix this.
00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:08.000
You don't say, Oh, your pump is leaking, uh, you're on your own.
00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:10.240
It's this is how you need to fix it.
00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:15.919
Um, how to do repairs, even if you don't do repairs, you gotta know what the repair is.
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:22.240
So when you talk to the client, you say, This is what they need to do, this is how they're gonna do it, this is what to expect.
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:28.480
Yeah, and I don't have any more comments on that because I have uh the third one, which is the last.
00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:29.840
You ready?
00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:30.799
I'm ready.
00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:32.399
Follow up, follow-up.
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:48.639
Nobody, I should say nobody, but most leak guys do not follow up with their clients, and that is where you solidify that um that relationship where they remember you and you want the reviews, but it's it's more than that.
00:10:48.960 --> 00:11:00.480
I've gone to many leaks where some other leak company came, um, they missed the leak, but they didn't know it because the customer was upset and they just called someone else.
00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:07.440
So part of the learning process is call them up and find out hey, how's everything going?
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:09.039
Uh, is the pool still leaking?
00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:13.200
If the pool's still leaking, you miss something, and that's a learning experience.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:18.720
And also, it gives trust to the client that you actually care.
00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:23.200
You called up, you followed through, and then you made good on your promise.
00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:28.720
Um, and that's what spreads word, and that's how you develop professionalism.
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:34.480
It's it's one of the most important things I stress to everyone is you gotta do that follow-up.
00:11:35.279 --> 00:11:37.600
I think that's important in any business.
00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:55.440
The follow-up, and you have that relationship that you build with the uh with your customer base and stuff like that, they're more likely to then come back to you if there's another issue, another leak, or if you're doing other things other than leaks, if you're if the pump's down or whatever.
00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:04.000
So you don't want them to forget about you, you don't want to annoy them, but you do it in such a way that it's that happy medium, right?
00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:16.879
And yeah, and you also um think about when you had a service, and then um you get something in your mind where you thought, well, they didn't do this, but even though it wasn't part of the service, then you start thinking about it.
00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:19.039
That's a time for them to talk.
00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:23.759
So um, I have a client now, uh, his vacuum's not working.
00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:28.639
Okay, we we put a skimmer in, but his vacuum's not working.
00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:31.679
Now he starts thinking they ruined my vacuum.
00:12:31.919 --> 00:12:38.000
So just the follow-up phone call we made, he goes, Hey, my vacuum wasn't working, uh, we're like, Yeah, we noticed.
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:40.720
We actually noticed the the whole thing was destroyed.
00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:44.879
Um, and then we could suggest this is what needs to be done, this is what you have to do.
00:12:44.960 --> 00:12:49.440
And he was the happiest in the world because he knows nothing about vacuums.
00:12:50.000 --> 00:13:03.679
So, because we were the last ones there, it got contributed to us, but because we did the follow-up phone call, that thing that was in his mind, he was able to talk about, and then we can come up with a remedy so we can help him.
00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:05.120
Awesome.
00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:13.759
Um, so now we're gonna move on to the next topic for Leak here, leaks here is the pressurizing test.
00:13:13.840 --> 00:13:16.159
Let's talk a little bit about that pressurizing test.
00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:27.120
One of the most important things in leaks, I I everything is important, but people get tripped up on pressurizing because they don't understand it, and it it's it's easy.
00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:32.720
You plug one line, you test from the other line, and then you pressurize it.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:37.440
That is all pressurizing is, and there's safety that goes behind it.
00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:41.919
You got to follow the manufacturer's suggestions on how much pressure you put in.
00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:45.840
So if you're using a churny plug, it says it right on the plug.
00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:56.159
You you can't blow up more than 30 pounds when you inflate it, and you can't put back pressure more than 13 pounds because then they pop out and things become dangerous.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:57.840
Then safety.
00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:09.360
If you start pumping that thing up, you're building pressure inside there that if it accidentally comes out and someone's near it, you can get really hurt.
00:14:09.600 --> 00:14:11.600
So I've already broken a thumb.
00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:21.200
Um, one of my employees broke his index finger and a thumb, and it had to do with forgetting the safety rules, uh, misunderstanding.
00:14:21.440 --> 00:14:22.720
So here's one.
00:14:23.519 --> 00:14:26.080
And you know I'm all about safety here, Jeff.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:28.720
Yeah, I know, and that's why I was afraid to bring this one up.
00:14:28.960 --> 00:14:32.240
But it's it's something that it actually happens.
00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:42.240
So, on this particular um situation, um, my employee was pressurizing, but then he got distracted and walked away from the gauge.
00:14:42.559 --> 00:14:47.840
The gauge went all the way up over 35 pounds, which you can't do.
00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:53.600
When I we communicate back and forth, I go, is it okay if I take it off?
00:14:53.759 --> 00:14:56.399
I didn't hear him say no.
00:14:57.279 --> 00:15:02.639
And I went underwater, I took it out, it exploded out and broke my thumb.
00:15:02.960 --> 00:15:08.080
So, communication when you're with someone else, very specific, is it safe?
00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:09.600
Did you relieve the pressure?
00:15:09.840 --> 00:15:11.360
Can I take it out?
00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:12.639
So that's what we do now.
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:14.000
Can I take it out?
00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:15.519
And we get the yes or no.
00:15:15.600 --> 00:15:18.879
As soon as we get the yes or no, then we remove the plug.
00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:34.480
And and customers, what they love to do is they love to put their head over the plug and say, Oh, you have a plug in there, and that's usually when the plug pops out, so safety, yeah, safety.
00:15:34.879 --> 00:15:40.720
And I've talked, I've had on the podcast where me and Rob talked about pressurized filters and stuff like that.
00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:42.639
So, and the safety there.
00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:50.240
I mean, those have the yeah, they have the little warning stickers right on them on every pressurized filter.
00:15:50.480 --> 00:15:51.360
Who reads them?
00:15:51.440 --> 00:15:53.200
I don't know who reads those.
00:15:53.519 --> 00:15:56.639
Who not the pool, not the pool pro, right?
00:15:57.519 --> 00:16:02.000
I've been doing this for 10 years, I never had to worry about reading that label before.
00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:13.120
I'll just yeah, until something happens, but something does happen at some point to somebody, and some people have died with those lids popping off and and into their faces.
00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:15.600
But same thing here, you can get hurt.
00:16:15.840 --> 00:16:19.279
Anything else you want to mention about prep the pressurizing test?
00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:23.440
No, we do we offer a class on that, we put it on every once in a while.
00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:27.519
We have another one coming up in about three or four weeks.
00:16:27.759 --> 00:16:34.960
I saw yeah, it's just a basic where I just go over proper pressure testing, how to do a basic pressure test.
00:16:35.120 --> 00:16:39.840
Once you learn the basic, then you're able to take it to the Mac.
00:16:40.639 --> 00:16:45.840
So if you get this gigantic pool with all these water features, you understand the basics.
00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:58.879
Plug one in, plug the other end, put the pressure in, piece of cake, the safety that goes along with it, and then you can't locate a broken line unless you have the basics of the pressurizing first.
00:16:59.679 --> 00:17:04.960
What was the class that you just taught online that I was teaching and missed it?
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:06.480
Was it the pressurizing test?
00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:07.279
Yeah, that was it.
00:17:07.359 --> 00:17:07.759
That was it.
00:17:07.839 --> 00:17:18.000
So, what we did is um we ran it, it was only supposed to be 45 minutes, and I as usual, when I give you a time, it's a lot more because I want to keep giving as much as I can.
00:17:18.400 --> 00:17:19.839
Getting more for your money, guys.
00:17:20.079 --> 00:17:21.039
You get it, yeah.
00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:24.240
Uh, so when I say 45 minutes, it's not 45 minutes.
00:17:24.400 --> 00:17:34.880
Um, it's it's a lot longer because I have a lot of information that I want to give, and um, I also I run the classes small so people could comment.
00:17:35.039 --> 00:17:43.599
I I want they're there to learn, and I am their servant, I am here to serve them, so they're not just paying for a class, I'm taking their money.
00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:52.480
I work for them, so I need the interaction so they can when they don't understand something, I explain it, and if it takes longer, it takes longer.
00:17:52.559 --> 00:17:54.319
That's just the way life is.
00:17:54.960 --> 00:18:03.920
All right, so our next topic for leaks is the electronic equipment that's used to do leak detection, right?
00:18:04.160 --> 00:18:15.920
So, one of the big misunderstandings is that the leak equipment does everything, so you just throw the hydrophone in the water and it's gonna find a leak.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:23.920
And it's it's a tool, everything that you have in your bucket in your truck is a tool, and you need to learn how to use each tool.
00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:39.680
So, um, if you watch my videos, um, I do videos where I I'll tell you we use electronic equipment, um, no, no brand names, because there's there's really only two in the pool industry in the United States that I know of.
00:18:39.839 --> 00:18:44.000
Um, they're both really good pieces of equipment, and I have both.
00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:47.839
Um, but it does not pick up everything.
00:18:48.079 --> 00:19:02.880
The leak makes a sound, the sound is a vibration, and if the vibration is too far away, or the vibration is not enough for the microphone to pick up because you have background noise and everything else, you're gonna miss the leak.
00:19:02.960 --> 00:19:05.519
So, you need the other techniques that go with it.
00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:06.880
Awesome.
00:19:07.200 --> 00:19:10.400
So you gotta get the right equipment, right?
00:19:10.559 --> 00:19:14.160
And there, you I mean, are you still die testing as well?
00:19:14.319 --> 00:19:16.960
Are you still doing the little die testing and all that too?
00:19:17.279 --> 00:19:26.079
Die testing is king, so you're looking for something invisible, which that's not electronic equipment, that's just doing the dive the pool, do the die testing.
00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:27.599
Where does it get pulled at?
00:19:27.920 --> 00:19:30.640
Yeah, so you don't yeah, some sometimes you dive in.
00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:32.160
I like to dive in.
00:19:32.240 --> 00:19:38.799
I'm in Florida, so and when it gets cold, you know, 80 degrees, I'm putting on the big suit.
00:19:39.119 --> 00:19:40.799
80 degrees is cold to us.
00:19:40.960 --> 00:19:41.839
Oh, that's freezing.
00:19:41.920 --> 00:19:42.960
What are you kidding me?
00:19:43.200 --> 00:19:46.799
Everybody else is like, Oh my god, that sounds so nice right now.
00:19:46.960 --> 00:19:48.400
Yeah, that's that's winter.
00:19:48.480 --> 00:19:51.039
I'm taking out the Arctic clothing and everything.
00:19:51.200 --> 00:19:55.759
Yeah, we like our bath, we like our bath water in our pools, guys, down here in Florida.
00:19:55.839 --> 00:20:01.359
If it's not like warm bath water, then it's like I I already went to my aunt and uncle's pool.
00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:06.799
I was like, nope, staying in the hot tub that was already heated up to like 98 degrees.
00:20:06.960 --> 00:20:09.440
I was like, I'm staying in the hot tub, pool's too cold.
00:20:09.680 --> 00:20:12.079
Yeah, yeah, that they hit 79.
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:15.119
Um, um, it's it's it was too cold for me.
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:16.079
I like the water.
00:20:16.880 --> 00:20:20.079
Denise Goff on Facebook Live says, Hi.
00:20:20.799 --> 00:20:25.440
Hey, do you have any questions about leak detection, Denise?
00:20:25.839 --> 00:20:29.440
Or about raccoons that we're gonna talk about in a little bit?
00:20:29.680 --> 00:20:31.920
Put it in the comments on Facebook.
00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:34.720
I'm actually monitoring the Facebook comments this time.
00:20:34.799 --> 00:20:35.599
I got smart.
00:20:36.160 --> 00:20:37.119
Awesome.
00:20:37.920 --> 00:20:48.079
Uh I I love to be in the water, so and you could see things from a different angle in the water, but you don't necessarily have to be in the water to do leak detection.
00:20:48.240 --> 00:20:50.640
Um, especially for the people up north.
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:54.000
It's too cold to get in the water all the time.
00:20:54.640 --> 00:20:59.119
So um there's ways of doing back to the die, which was the original question.
00:20:59.359 --> 00:21:01.920
The die is what makes the invisible visible.
00:21:02.400 --> 00:21:05.359
So we're using the die to watch the water movement.
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:09.279
So we need to see the water move out of the leak.
00:21:09.680 --> 00:21:13.599
And every pool has specific places where they leak.
00:21:13.759 --> 00:21:16.160
If you know where they are, you know where to put the die.
00:21:16.559 --> 00:21:21.440
And if you know how to use the die, you know how to watch it to see where the leak is at.
00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:22.960
Awesome.
00:21:23.279 --> 00:21:26.799
Anything else that you want to talk about with leaks here?
00:21:26.880 --> 00:21:27.839
We have a little bit of time.
00:21:27.920 --> 00:21:30.160
We can add some stuff.
00:21:30.480 --> 00:21:33.200
Am I allowed to talk about my training method?
00:21:33.440 --> 00:21:35.200
Yes, talk about your training method.
00:21:35.359 --> 00:21:57.039
It is don't give every don't give everything away, though, because I was gonna use this as everybody a hint is that Jeff is gonna be on a recorded podcast episode, not the live, the a recorded put up podcast episode, and that should be published.
00:21:57.200 --> 00:21:58.559
What did I say it was?
00:21:58.880 --> 00:21:59.759
This is the live we.
00:22:00.720 --> 00:22:04.240
Uh, not next week, October 19th, guys.
00:22:04.480 --> 00:22:16.799
If you're looking for Jeff talking about all about leaks and leak detection, and he's got uh training uh business leak business academy.
00:22:16.880 --> 00:22:18.240
He'll talk about that.
00:22:18.480 --> 00:22:27.039
Um, so we're hinting here with him being a guest anchor, and I want you to be on the lookout for his episode on October 19th.
00:22:27.759 --> 00:22:30.319
It's gonna be great, guys.
00:22:31.119 --> 00:22:32.880
Well, they'll be seeing more of me.
00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:37.680
Like I said, we're new, so we're our names getting out there, our reputation is building.
00:22:37.920 --> 00:22:43.680
Um, I want to be known as the instructor for leaks, not not necessarily the guru because I'm not.
00:22:43.839 --> 00:22:45.039
I'm not a guru.
00:22:45.359 --> 00:22:46.880
Um, I just take a microphone.
00:22:47.920 --> 00:22:49.279
You're so modest, yeah.
00:22:49.759 --> 00:22:54.880
Because every time I meet, like even my students, my students come in, I learn something from them.
00:22:54.960 --> 00:22:57.039
I'm like, oh man, I never thought of that.
00:22:57.200 --> 00:22:58.240
Uh I do too.
00:22:58.400 --> 00:22:59.279
I do too.
00:22:59.519 --> 00:23:05.279
And if you put yourself out there as you're the expert, then you just set yourself up to not be the expert.
00:23:05.519 --> 00:23:08.160
So I'm I'm not, I want to learn, I keep learning.
00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:20.400
My students teach me, other people in the industry teach me, and uh this industry, there's so much to do in this industry that you can never get bored if you want to keep learning, it just keeps going.
00:23:20.960 --> 00:23:26.559
But training method this is something I've developed over years and years and years.
00:23:26.799 --> 00:23:34.400
So I used to be a college adjunct professor, um and that's where I learned how to teach adults.
00:23:35.200 --> 00:23:57.680
00:23:57.759 --> 00:23:59.680
I'm trying to stretch as far as I can go.
00:23:59.759 --> 00:24:07.440
You're not gonna remember all of it, but when you leave me and it goes back, you learned a lot more than you had when you came to me.
00:24:07.759 --> 00:24:23.119
And the way I do it is I show you what you have to do, then I walk you through doing it, and then I take a step back, have you do it with a little guidance, then I have you do it on your own with some pressure.
00:24:23.359 --> 00:24:24.960
Then the pressure is very easy.
00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:30.400
I'll take you to a pool and I'll say, now when I do my training, it's on real pools, real jobs.
00:24:30.640 --> 00:24:32.720
I don't know whether we're gonna find a leak.
00:24:32.799 --> 00:24:34.240
I don't know where the leak is at.
00:24:34.400 --> 00:24:38.720
All I know is that the customer says their pool's leaking, they put the hose in every week.
00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:40.240
Go find it.
00:24:40.559 --> 00:24:47.200
So one of the last on the last day, your last pool is usually here.
00:24:47.279 --> 00:24:52.319
You are go do it, and then they have to teach once they get through that.
00:24:52.400 --> 00:24:53.680
Now they have to teach back to me.
00:24:53.759 --> 00:24:54.960
Okay, what did you do?
00:24:55.200 --> 00:25:16.240
Teach me back what you did, and that's where that rubber band is no longer its original size when you get to teach back, but there's more to it, and and uh coastal pools is on, and yeah, I saw him post Coastal Waves Pools said, Sweet, been waiting for that podcast to be released.
00:25:16.319 --> 00:25:20.400
So he's now you know when it on the timeline it's coming out.
00:25:20.640 --> 00:25:25.680
And earlier, Denise wanted to comment, and I like to give her credit because she's on.
00:25:25.920 --> 00:25:29.680
She said, '80 is too cold for the pool.
00:25:30.160 --> 00:25:31.599
Yes, yes, all right.
00:25:31.759 --> 00:25:33.519
I agree, put the heater on.
00:25:33.759 --> 00:25:38.480
All right, so get let's get back to the the you were talking about the elastic band.
00:25:39.279 --> 00:25:48.079
Yes, the the biggest thing is um, and that's why I mentioned coastal pools because he went through my training.
00:25:48.319 --> 00:25:51.039
Is I I throw so much out.
00:25:52.880 --> 00:25:54.400
I throw so much out.
00:25:54.559 --> 00:26:04.319
I and it's not it's not like you don't come, we have breakfast, and we talk, and then we do something, then we have lunch, and I I give you a sandwich.
00:26:04.559 --> 00:26:06.079
No, we're we're working.
00:26:06.240 --> 00:26:14.240
Okay, if you need food, we'll stop bringing you bring you food, and I'm working you until it gets dark or it gets really late because I want you exhausted.
00:26:14.400 --> 00:26:27.359
I want you so exhausted that you think you can't remember what's going on, and you just start spontaneously saying, Oh, yeah, this, and then oh yeah, and then we look at the scammer here, and then we got the five points of the light that we got to look here.
00:26:27.759 --> 00:26:33.200
When you're able to do that when you're tired, your mind has absorbed it.
00:26:33.519 --> 00:26:42.000
So this was a method I that I taught um or I used when I was an instructor, and then I brought it into the leak academy.
00:26:42.160 --> 00:26:48.720
That's why in two days I can teach a lot more than most instructors do in a whole entire week.
00:26:48.880 --> 00:26:50.400
Now, do you remember everything?
00:26:50.559 --> 00:26:53.119
No, can I teach you 20 years of experience?
00:26:53.599 --> 00:26:54.799
Absolutely not.
00:26:55.039 --> 00:27:02.160
Can I get you the basic where you have the confidence that once you leave me, you got I can do this, all right?
00:27:02.400 --> 00:27:04.319
And then I'm also here for support.
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:07.920
I don't just leave my students and say, All right, you're on your own.
00:27:08.160 --> 00:27:12.880
Uh and you can talk to Franco, you can text me, you can call me.
00:27:12.960 --> 00:27:22.000
Now I'm not able to answer the phone right away, but I will get back to you, I'll walk you through something, I'll have you send me pictures, and I'll help you.
00:27:22.079 --> 00:27:25.039
And then once you get going, you don't need me anymore.
00:27:25.279 --> 00:27:26.480
And that's the whole idea.
00:27:26.559 --> 00:27:37.359
I don't want you to the podcast episode that we're gonna have up next month is gonna talk about like even the revenue growth that you can possibly see with adding leak detection to your business.
00:27:37.519 --> 00:27:39.440
Remember, we talked about that, so yeah.
00:27:39.680 --> 00:27:41.039
I don't want to bring it up here.
00:27:41.200 --> 00:27:43.359
We're gonna the we're teasing here.
00:27:43.920 --> 00:27:47.279
Get everybody to listen to that good podcast episode.
00:27:47.359 --> 00:27:48.799
So we have some good listeners.
00:27:49.039 --> 00:27:53.039
Denise Goff said on Facebook, would love to do his training.
00:27:53.200 --> 00:27:56.000
So, where can they find training?
00:27:56.480 --> 00:27:58.799
Where where would they find your training at?
00:27:59.200 --> 00:28:00.960
Um, leak business academy.
00:28:01.119 --> 00:28:03.359
Yeah, leakbusinessacademy.com.
00:28:03.519 --> 00:28:04.960
They can get to my page.
00:28:05.119 --> 00:28:09.920
Um, also just talking to us, so they can get the phone number that's on there.
00:28:10.079 --> 00:28:10.720
Call us up.
00:28:10.960 --> 00:28:14.799
Leak and subsurface locators is our actual service business.
00:28:14.960 --> 00:28:17.119
You can call it's the same phone number.
00:28:17.279 --> 00:28:19.119
Um, it's the same business.
00:28:19.279 --> 00:28:25.039
It's just we had to separate it because we're we're an actual school, so we had to have the separation.
00:28:25.920 --> 00:28:30.720
Um and you could just call up and then you'll talk to Sandra.
00:28:30.799 --> 00:28:33.519
Sandra can give you a whole bunch of information because she runs.
00:28:33.599 --> 00:28:34.799
I'm at her desk right now.
00:28:35.440 --> 00:28:37.279
My desk is in the corner over there.
00:28:37.440 --> 00:28:42.880
Um, she runs the whole inside, she's actually uh built this whole business.
00:28:43.039 --> 00:28:46.240
I'm the worker, um, the employee, she's the boss.
00:28:46.559 --> 00:28:50.240
Oh, you guys are working together, you guys make an awesome team, too.
00:28:51.200 --> 00:28:57.519
Well, and she knows so much about this business, and then when you need to talk to me, just I'll just come and talk.
00:28:57.680 --> 00:29:00.160
I'm always available at some point.
00:29:00.480 --> 00:29:02.319
Um, there was something else.
00:29:02.640 --> 00:29:05.599
Oh, the podcast has three secrets on it.
00:29:05.920 --> 00:29:07.119
Yeah, three secrets.
00:29:07.200 --> 00:29:08.559
We're not gonna tell what those are, though.
00:29:08.720 --> 00:29:09.279
No, we're not.
00:29:09.680 --> 00:29:22.960
Jeez, there's three secrets you want to know, and that whole podcast will be about uh hit leak detection and his business academy, and all what you're gonna learn from from that as well.
00:29:23.200 --> 00:29:31.519
So um, I wanted to give a shout out to J Money55 on uh Instagram live 305 pool service.
00:29:31.599 --> 00:29:33.920
I mentioned Coastal Wave Pools.
00:29:34.160 --> 00:29:42.640
Welcome, Holton uh Commercial Pool is on, and Ace Pools and Spa joined as well.
00:29:42.799 --> 00:29:44.960
So welcome to the live podcast.
00:29:45.359 --> 00:29:48.880
Alexis2824 just joined us.
00:29:49.119 --> 00:29:52.079
Welcome to the live Let's Talk About Pools Podcast.
00:29:52.160 --> 00:29:59.039
This is exciting as we keep growing because I didn't start the live podcast until about I think April-ish.
00:29:59.920 --> 00:30:10.079
And so twice twice a month, can't go crazy with it, but trying to grow slow, things that grow slowly just last and work really well.
00:30:10.319 --> 00:30:21.759
So we had like nobody listening or coming on, and now we got kind of some regulars, so uh, and I see your wife posted, you're so sweet, thank you.
00:30:22.559 --> 00:30:24.799
You're thank you're sweet too, Sandra.
00:30:24.880 --> 00:30:28.240
I know you can hear me out in the corner over there.
00:30:28.880 --> 00:30:33.279
All right, so um that this has been such an awesome topic.
00:30:33.440 --> 00:30:35.599
Everybody seems to be really excited about it.
00:30:35.839 --> 00:30:46.960
So I know everybody saw me post yesterday with the graphic for the live podcast, the cute little raccoon on the edge of the uh of the edge of the pool.
00:30:47.119 --> 00:30:50.000
And I'm gonna give credit for this idea.
00:30:50.160 --> 00:30:54.000
Uh, earlier in the was it late last week?
00:30:54.319 --> 00:30:56.559
Early this week, I don't remember.
00:30:56.720 --> 00:30:58.480
Um, I think it was late last week.
00:30:58.640 --> 00:31:10.240
One of my pool pros from Texas said, This is my day today, and sent me pictures of a dead raccoon floating around in this pool he showed up at.
00:31:10.400 --> 00:31:15.279
And I was like, you know, I haven't really like done anything about raccoons specifically.
00:31:15.359 --> 00:31:18.000
So this can be my public health part here.
00:31:18.160 --> 00:31:24.160
And you said you kind of write about it and had an aha moment, Jeff, about raccoons.
00:31:25.680 --> 00:31:33.440
No, when we talked earlier, um, when you were explaining about the podcast, I never knew how dangerous it was.
00:31:33.599 --> 00:31:39.920
Um, because we have raccoons in pools here all the time, dead rats and birds and skimmers.
00:31:40.160 --> 00:31:44.400
Um, so I never realized how date, but you're gonna talk about it.
00:31:44.480 --> 00:31:51.440
So I don't want to raccoons are different than every other critter that you kind of just mentioned in a pool.
00:31:51.759 --> 00:32:11.839
So, per CDC guidelines, if you've got any of those other critters, spiders, lizards, possums, whatever, they're treated like a solid poop incident from a human being, which is what 2 ppm of chlorine for 30 minutes, and it should be good.
00:32:11.920 --> 00:32:14.880
You clean it up, burns, bird poop, same thing.
00:32:14.960 --> 00:32:16.799
But raccoons are very specific.
00:32:16.960 --> 00:32:25.039
So if you walk up to a pool, you find a dead raccoon, or you saw the raccoon in the pool, what do they like to do, Jeff?
00:32:25.200 --> 00:32:28.160
They like to go the first or second step and do what?
00:32:28.799 --> 00:32:32.640
They like to clean their hands and poo all over the place.
00:32:32.880 --> 00:32:41.119
They take a dump in the pool while they're in there washing their hands, so they think they're being clean, which they kind of are.
00:32:41.359 --> 00:32:52.000
They're doing better than my nine-year-old son, who will go to the bathroom and come out when we're at a restaurant and claim that he washed his hands, and we're like, they're not damp at all.
00:32:52.079 --> 00:32:54.559
And he gets upset and we send them right back.
00:32:54.799 --> 00:33:07.359
Raccoons are trying to be cleaner than my son, nine-year-old son is uh at cleaning their hands, but they're not smart, so they take a dump while they're there, and it seems like a good place for them, you know, and then they're gone.
00:33:07.440 --> 00:33:11.359
So, what do you do as a pool pro with anything with raccoons?
00:33:11.519 --> 00:33:14.799
Dead raccoon, raccoon in the pool, raccoon poops in the pool.
00:33:14.960 --> 00:33:19.440
Uh, discovering a dead animal in a swimming pool, I know is unpleasant.
00:33:19.519 --> 00:33:28.720
And Rocky Housden, uh, my awesome pool pro from Tetis is the one that sent me the pictures and gave me this whole idea to talk about raccoons.
00:33:28.799 --> 00:33:36.720
And I know it's not the first time anybody's ever talked about it, um, but it's it's not necessarily an emergency.
00:33:36.960 --> 00:33:43.279
So, you know, birds, frogs, rodents, snakes, other animals will occasionally end up in the pool as well.
00:33:43.599 --> 00:33:58.240
The CDC says most dead animals found in swimming pools don't pose a significant health risk to swimmers, and you're just gonna treat it as a solid coop incident 2 ppm for 30 minutes.
00:33:58.319 --> 00:33:59.680
But raccoons are different.
00:33:59.839 --> 00:34:11.920
Whether you discover a dead raccoon, raccoon species on the steps, um, the incident's gonna deserve uh special attention because raccoons carry a very specific round worm, guys.
00:34:12.239 --> 00:34:19.840
And I will say it wrong because they give these funky names, you know, genus species names, these scientists, right?
00:34:19.920 --> 00:34:25.840
And I know I'm a scientist, um, but you know, I don't say even people's names right.
00:34:26.000 --> 00:34:35.920
It's something like Baelus Sicarious Procyonis, commonly known as the ra raccoon round worm.
00:34:36.079 --> 00:34:39.360
And this is an important lesson for pool pros, and it's simple.
00:34:39.519 --> 00:34:44.079
Don't assume adding more chlorine is gonna solve your this this problem, okay?
00:34:44.320 --> 00:34:50.480
Because chlorine cannot inactivate or kill this round worm, okay?
00:34:50.639 --> 00:34:52.639
So people come, what does it do to people?
00:34:52.719 --> 00:35:08.159
An infected raccoon can shed these roundworm eggs and it's poopy, or even when it dies, people become infected by accidentally swallowing the eggs from the the uh water or off objects that are in the water.
00:35:08.400 --> 00:35:16.960
Even though human infections are rare, it can be very serious and can infect your eyes, your organs, and your nervous system.
00:35:17.199 --> 00:35:22.960
And there's another important detail the eggs are not immediately infectious when passed in fresh feces.
00:35:23.039 --> 00:35:29.440
So the CDC states that they generally require about two to four weeks in the environment to become infective.
00:35:29.599 --> 00:35:32.800
So prompt cleanup is what's important, right?
00:35:33.039 --> 00:35:34.079
Because of that.
00:35:34.400 --> 00:35:41.360
So for a pool operator, perhaps the most important fact is chlorine does not kill the roundworm eggs.
00:35:41.599 --> 00:35:50.079
Chlorine will kill many of the other germs a raccoon might introduce to the water, but the CDC specifically says the chlorine is not going to do it.
00:35:50.320 --> 00:36:00.320
So that is why the raccoon incident should be treated as simply, not as simply as any other dead animal or a routine fecal incident.
00:36:00.639 --> 00:36:03.119
So, what does the CDC say to do?
00:36:03.280 --> 00:36:04.159
What should we do?
00:36:04.400 --> 00:36:09.199
Close the pool, make sure if it's a private pool, you let the customers know.
00:36:09.440 --> 00:36:09.760
Okay.
00:36:10.239 --> 00:36:18.000
CDC recommends um, if you can, you know, contacting local animal control, but you can't always, you know, do that.
00:36:18.159 --> 00:36:33.760
So you're gonna put on your disposable gloves, you're gonna net out and get whatever out, remove the raccoon from the pool, place it and anything else into double garbage bags and remove it and get rid of it properly.
00:36:33.920 --> 00:36:38.400
Secure the bags, put them in a sealed trash container, and immediately wash your hands.
00:36:38.639 --> 00:36:40.079
Now, what happens?
00:36:40.320 --> 00:36:43.599
The most likely scenario, you're not gonna catch the raccoon, right?
00:36:43.679 --> 00:36:48.239
So you're not gonna be able to test it if it's pooped and gone, it's not dead.
00:36:48.559 --> 00:36:56.639
So the CDC, the the option one that's most likely gonna happen is you're filtering the water, and it's about turnovers, right?
00:36:57.199 --> 00:37:01.920
So filter the pool for a minimum of 24 hours.
00:37:02.559 --> 00:37:03.760
That what does that mean?
00:37:03.840 --> 00:37:08.320
How what's the average, Jeff, for a residential pump, pool pump running?
00:37:08.559 --> 00:37:11.199
Here we're doing eight hours, eight hours.
00:37:11.280 --> 00:37:13.039
Let's just say six to eight hours.
00:37:13.119 --> 00:37:15.679
We'll say seven, whatever, not sit seven.
00:37:15.760 --> 00:37:17.519
Ha ha, had to do it, guys.
00:37:18.079 --> 00:37:21.360
Um, go to Walmart.
00:37:21.440 --> 00:37:24.719
They're selling a shirt now uh for the sit seven club.
00:37:25.920 --> 00:37:28.079
Husband bought one and my daughter bought one.
00:37:28.320 --> 00:37:29.519
All right, back on track.
00:37:29.599 --> 00:37:31.920
I always get on my little fun tangents.
00:37:32.159 --> 00:37:35.519
So you gotta take the pins out of the time clock, don't you?
00:37:35.760 --> 00:37:46.000
You gotta explain to the customer why the pins are out, why their pump is running for a full 24 hours because they're shutting it off.
00:37:46.239 --> 00:37:53.199
Or if there's a variable speed pump there, you need to make sure it's running at full speed for 24 hours, okay?
00:37:53.360 --> 00:37:55.599
Not dial it, let it dial down.
00:37:55.920 --> 00:38:04.159
After you've done that full 24 hours of filtering the water, everything goes to the filter, it captures the the eggs and the round worms.
00:38:04.320 --> 00:38:06.159
So you got to backwash a filter.
00:38:06.320 --> 00:38:10.480
Um, if you got to take out a cartridge filter, then you gotta hose that off, right?
00:38:10.559 --> 00:38:11.599
It's not backwashing.
00:38:11.679 --> 00:38:13.199
You should be wearing gloves.
00:38:13.440 --> 00:38:22.480
Replace your filter media if possible, place the discarded filter media in the double garbage bags, remove your gloves and put them into the bags as well.
00:38:22.880 --> 00:38:28.800
Um what you know, we got to be careful if we start talking about personal protective equipment.
00:38:28.960 --> 00:38:30.639
What is recommended?
00:38:30.880 --> 00:38:41.039
Um, especially with like a cartridge filter where you could have over spray while you're spraying it, and maybe it comes into your face, or you've got some of that water.
00:38:41.199 --> 00:38:46.320
Um, you really should have a dust mask on, gloves on, so that you're not breathing it in.
00:38:46.400 --> 00:38:50.480
You don't want to risk breathing anything in that might have some of those round wormaids.
00:38:50.719 --> 00:38:54.639
So we're not asking for a full hazmat suit or anything, guys.
00:38:54.719 --> 00:39:01.119
We're just asking for a dust mask and some disposable gloves at most, okay?
00:39:01.280 --> 00:39:04.800
We're talking about respiratory protection and stuff like that.
00:39:05.119 --> 00:39:08.239
Um, anything else you want to add, Jeff?
00:39:10.000 --> 00:39:10.480
Nope.
00:39:10.719 --> 00:39:15.440
I learned a lot from just the conversation from yesterday and from today.
00:39:15.679 --> 00:39:22.559
Um, I can't tell you how many pools we go to, and that whole top step is just covered in it.
00:39:22.960 --> 00:39:26.719
It looks like floating berries, like on the top surface of the pool.
00:39:27.679 --> 00:39:30.880
It's like they swallowed the berries, and then just didn't it's like corn.
00:39:31.119 --> 00:39:33.920
Like their body takes something but not all of it, and it comes out.
00:39:34.000 --> 00:39:37.199
It's like we poop out corn kernels, right?
00:39:37.440 --> 00:39:39.519
Our body doesn't process those either.
00:39:39.599 --> 00:39:40.960
I don't even know why we eat corn.
00:39:41.039 --> 00:39:42.159
What do we get from it?
00:39:42.400 --> 00:39:45.599
But the raccoons, it's the same thing with their little poopies.
00:39:45.760 --> 00:39:52.480
They love they love berries and stuff around, and that's what they're eating and stuff, other than the trash and our trash cans.
00:39:52.559 --> 00:40:00.000
We have resident raccoons that come in our trash cans all the time, so they're gonna be around, their animals aren't going away, you're gonna deal with them.
00:40:00.159 --> 00:40:09.199
I mean, one of the crazy ones I ever heard, not raccoon-related animal-wise, was um, they kept trying to figure out was pooping and peeing in their backyard pool.
00:40:09.360 --> 00:40:11.840
So they put up, like, you know, ring camera or whatever.
00:40:12.000 --> 00:40:21.519
And it was a bobcat that was coming up to the edge of the pool and taking a dump and peeing in it almost every day in at night, you know.
00:40:21.679 --> 00:40:29.119
So they wake up in the morning, there's a poop floating around in their pool, and they're like, What is doing this every night?
00:40:29.360 --> 00:40:38.320
And you know, the cat can scale the fence, it can get into the yard, and I don't, it has a fetish for pooping and peeing and in pools, I guess.
00:40:38.559 --> 00:40:40.559
So, yeah, it's pretty gross.
00:40:40.719 --> 00:40:42.400
I agree, Sandra.
00:40:42.800 --> 00:40:45.599
So, I mean, that's what I got today, guys.
00:40:45.679 --> 00:40:47.679
And I will have a nice blog article.
00:40:47.840 --> 00:40:54.960
Thank you, Rocky, uh, Aqua Clean Pools, uh, for uh giving that great idea.
00:40:55.039 --> 00:41:03.920
And I'm gonna have a really nice long blog article about raccoons and what to do, and it'll talk a lot more detail than what I brought up here.
00:41:04.079 --> 00:41:06.239
So that'll go up this week.
00:41:06.480 --> 00:41:11.119
Um, it usually goes up October, like the first of the month.
00:41:11.440 --> 00:41:20.639
So um, I put try to put one blog article up a month on the website, but I'll link it and post it onto social media for you guys, like my Black Widow one.
00:41:20.719 --> 00:41:22.639
You saw my Black Widow one, right?
00:41:23.039 --> 00:41:25.440
Black widows and the skimmer lids and stuff like that.
00:41:25.599 --> 00:41:25.920
Let's see.
00:41:26.000 --> 00:41:30.000
Denise Scobb said, raccoons love the open pools.
00:41:30.159 --> 00:41:32.880
Thanks for the info on the cleanup of their poo.
00:41:33.039 --> 00:41:38.880
I always run for 24 hours and clean the filter, but didn't know about the worms.
00:41:39.440 --> 00:41:40.719
So there we go.
00:41:40.960 --> 00:41:46.639
It's all about that's a public health thing, and that I love talking public health, can't you tell?
00:41:47.039 --> 00:41:48.880
I love the bacteria.
00:41:49.039 --> 00:41:51.039
People don't realize that you can get sick.
00:41:51.199 --> 00:41:58.000
General people don't realize you can get sick from pool water, and it's all different ways and different things, you know.
00:41:58.079 --> 00:42:00.159
So it's it's very interesting to me.
00:42:00.400 --> 00:42:04.159
Public health was a very fun job I did for 17 years.
00:42:04.480 --> 00:42:08.480
Loved every day I was there doing it, the actual job.
00:42:08.719 --> 00:42:17.440
Maybe not always all the other it's you know, things out there with people that you had to deal with and stuff, but the the job was super interesting.
00:42:17.840 --> 00:42:33.360
Regulatory side, and then taking the public health and putting it together when you can take public health and then be able to explain why violations are what they are on out of the public pool code, and you can it's connect the dots with public health and safety.
00:42:33.440 --> 00:42:36.880
That's how you get people to correct violations on their public facilities.
00:42:36.960 --> 00:42:38.000
Do you agree, Jeff?
00:42:38.320 --> 00:42:40.400
I do, yes, absolutely.
00:42:40.800 --> 00:42:51.599
And and I know you you haven't done like you've been doing leak and subsurface locators for a long time now, but did you started as a service company, correct?
00:42:51.920 --> 00:42:53.920
Over 20 years ago.
00:42:54.239 --> 00:42:58.480
Don't ask me any questions about chemicals because I don't hear anything, Jeff.
00:42:58.639 --> 00:43:01.199
I don't even know how to test chemicals anymore.
00:43:03.119 --> 00:43:10.719
Uh your uh Sandra said, yes, sometimes they want us to jump in green pools and don't understand why we say no.
00:43:11.840 --> 00:43:15.599
Um, yeah, and and they're green because of algae, right?
00:43:15.840 --> 00:43:21.280
And if you've ever taken a good pool operator course, we don't talk about algae in chapter four.
00:43:21.519 --> 00:43:29.360
It's not that it gets people sick, it's just an indicator organism that conditions aren't being maintained really well in that pool.
00:43:29.519 --> 00:43:35.920
And if it's present, all those recreational water illnesses that do get people sick are most likely present as well.
00:43:36.079 --> 00:43:39.360
They're gonna be present right along with the algae in the pool.
00:43:39.599 --> 00:43:46.880
So algae is a slip hazard and it's gross, and people don't want, you know, are gonna complain about it.
00:43:47.039 --> 00:43:50.880
It's probably your biggest complaint as a pool company, right?
00:43:51.039 --> 00:43:51.519
Anywhere.
00:43:51.760 --> 00:43:53.760
People just want to be able to go swimming.
00:43:54.800 --> 00:43:57.039
Well, that's all I got for today.
00:43:57.199 --> 00:44:06.000
We were in 43 minutes, and I want everybody to be on the lookout for his podcast again coming out on I think I said October 19th.
00:44:06.400 --> 00:44:21.599
It'll be published uh with Jeff and me, but all about leaks and the leak uh leak business academy and his classes and how how you can get into that because I think this is a really good thing to add on to people's uh businesses.
00:44:21.840 --> 00:44:22.159
Oh, yeah.
00:44:22.400 --> 00:44:34.000
And he's doing these classes online virtual as well as in person, and you can go to what's the website again, leak detection leakbusinessacademy.com.
00:44:34.400 --> 00:44:43.119
I keep adding a word, leak businessacademy.com, and the really long one, leak and subsurface locators.com.
00:44:43.599 --> 00:44:44.960
Awesome, awesome.
00:44:45.280 --> 00:44:50.239
Well, thank you for being on the podcast as a guest anchor today, Jeff.
00:44:50.400 --> 00:44:52.639
I uh it is awesome having you on.
00:44:52.719 --> 00:44:56.559
I was so excited when you volunteered when you saw me post about it.
00:44:56.880 --> 00:45:05.840
And I'm hoping keeping my fingers crossed that Rob will be back at him with his uh his uh personality that he brings in.
00:45:06.000 --> 00:45:11.199
Uh, he's always got something on me, so he keeps me in in my place.
00:45:12.719 --> 00:45:13.360
Thank you very much.
00:45:13.519 --> 00:45:14.000
It was awesome.
00:45:14.800 --> 00:45:21.119
And we're gonna leave you guys with our outro, and and then we'll see you in two weeks.
00:45:21.280 --> 00:45:30.400
