00:00:00.050 --> 00:00:00.660
Hi everyone.
00:00:00.670 --> 00:00:06.080
Today's question is: why do I feel more bloated on a low FODMAP diet?
00:00:07.469 --> 00:00:19.850
That low FODMAP diet works for bloating incredibly well when you have hydrogen or methane SIBO, as long as you're getting your bowels moving and you're not constipated.
00:00:20.190 --> 00:00:26.940
But even if you're not getting your bowels moving, that diet alone should just reduce the gas and reduce the bloating.
00:00:27.280 --> 00:00:33.399
If it's getting worse, there's two real key things I want you to think about.
00:00:34.070 --> 00:00:39.210
Firstly, a low FODMAP diet is not a low sulfur diet.
00:00:40.213 --> 00:00:45.192
Sometimes people will start increasing sulfur foods.
00:00:45.905 --> 00:00:55.302
They might be a legume person for their protein, so they remove the legumes and they have more red meat, more eggs, high sulfur.
00:00:56.073 --> 00:01:01.412
They might start eating more cruciferous or brassica vegetables, high sulfur.
00:01:02.343 --> 00:01:05.373
They're not eating garlic and onion because that's high FODMAP as well.
00:01:06.132 --> 00:01:11.135
So if that's happening to you, you might also start to feel toxic.
00:01:11.146 --> 00:01:13.209
That's a classic sulfur symptom.
00:01:13.218 --> 00:01:15.179
You might feel headachey.
00:01:15.638 --> 00:01:19.179
You might feel like you're getting skin rashes.
00:01:19.188 --> 00:01:21.168
You might have egg-smelling flatulence.
00:01:22.058 --> 00:01:23.938
So just look at your sulfur load.
00:01:24.899 --> 00:01:30.058
This is especially for people that haven't actually done a SIBO test and they can't actually see what's going on.
00:01:30.698 --> 00:01:31.799
Could be a sulfur issue.
00:01:32.838 --> 00:01:47.055
The other thing that can happen is people go low FODMAP and then they can't have wheat,'cause wheat is high FODMAP, and they will have almond meal, almond flour, or buckwheat flour.
00:01:47.865 --> 00:01:50.085
They're both very high in oxalate.
00:01:51.296 --> 00:01:57.036
And you might inevitably start consuming more high oxalate foods that aren't high FODMAP.
00:01:57.335 --> 00:02:02.305
Things like celery, things like carrot, beetroots, high oxalate.
00:02:02.936 --> 00:02:04.856
And spinach is high oxalate as well.
00:02:05.147 --> 00:02:16.000
People have these dietary changes and they're consuming healthy foods, but it's actually unraveling that there is, or exposing that there's another issue.
00:02:16.402 --> 00:02:17.633
It could be a sulfur issue.
00:02:17.633 --> 00:02:19.483
It could be an oxalate issue.
00:02:20.682 --> 00:02:27.413
So if you're eating more oxalates, you might also find that you're getting pain symptoms, gut pain, joint pain, bladder pain.
00:02:28.323 --> 00:02:37.073
It's not a matter of just pushing through this low FODMAP diet if you're still very, very bloated,'cause it could be a dietary issue.
00:02:37.719 --> 00:02:41.526
The other thing is that you might have a migrating motor complex issue.
00:02:42.445 --> 00:02:48.665
And basically the migrating motor complex sweeps out undigested food and bad bacteria between meals.
00:02:49.506 --> 00:02:55.026
Now, usually still the low FODMAP diet will at least get some of the bloating down.
00:02:55.075 --> 00:02:56.936
It usually doesn't make it worse.
00:02:57.605 --> 00:03:02.366
Usually the sulfur, if you're eating more sulfur or more oxalates, it can actually make it worse.
00:03:02.586 --> 00:03:05.906
Migrating motor complex issues might be no change.
00:03:06.675 --> 00:03:19.300
So they're actually the three reasons that-- Well, they're not sort of common reasons, but reasons that I wanted to flag why your bloating might not be subsiding on a low FODMAP diet.
