OVER DEZE AFLEVERING
Author, educator, and poet Casey Bailey is with Herman talking about how he combines his very different passions.
Casey discusses how important and powerful it is to play a part in other people's journeys of transformation and how anyone's journey is made up of many inspirations and defining moments
This is an inspirational listen and an insight into how we need to understand and see young people beyond the constraints of their environments and support them in accessing opportunities and changing their narrative
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- I try not to define myself I'm just a soul on life's journey
- A lot of people go a long time writing and sharing poetry before they call themselves a poet
- There is nothing that is so rewarding as teaching
- The journey can be transformational for them and they don't even recognise who they were when they started their journey
- To play a small part in their journey is massive
- There are lots of defining moments in your life and there are some decisions that need to be understood so you can effectively move past them
- Changing other's lives and influencing others through your contribution is really powerful
- People told us that people like us didn't walk in worlds like this
- Grime Boy is about friendship, loss, and the environment we grow up
- We look at people where I come from as having no aspirations or not being ambitious
- We need to look at the environment, access to it and how it shapes people and who they wanted to be
- The aspirations aren't low they are just negative aspirations
- It's about them being able to see beyond the constraints of their environment
- When we write them off it makes it easier for us to deal with it
- When we see people in those situations as human we know we have a role to play
BEST MOMENTS
‘My two prominent personas have merged and seep into everything I do'
‘You don't have to want to write poetry you can just want to listen to it'
‘We felt that we had to change who we were or change our aspirations
