the National Science Foundation.
11
00:00:48.079 --> 00:00:49.979
Hey, Mark here with Ellie.
12
00:00:50.179 --> 00:00:50.799
Hi, everyone.
13
00:00:51.020 --> 00:00:53.479
Normally, it would be Molly and our wonderful co-host, Ellie,
14
00:00:53.759 --> 00:00:56.799
who would start the show. But Ellie just arrived at
15
00:00:56.840 --> 00:00:59.939
Brains On HQ, and Molly is nowhere to be found.
16
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:00.479
Yeah.
17
00:01:00.810 --> 00:01:03.049
So we're going to find her. We already searched all
18
00:01:03.070 --> 00:01:04.129
of her regular spots.
19
00:01:04.549 --> 00:01:09.859
We checked Molly's office, Sandon's wildflower garden, Molly's other office
20
00:01:09.900 --> 00:01:11.680
that she keeps specifically for snacks.
21
00:01:12.120 --> 00:01:13.439
Hey, Mark, what about this room?
22
00:01:13.819 --> 00:01:17.000
Oh, that's the Brains On workshop. Maybe Molly's working on
23
00:01:17.040 --> 00:01:18.790
a project. Let's take a look.
24
00:01:21.510 --> 00:01:22.049
Wow.
25
00:01:22.290 --> 00:01:28.140
Holy supersized spiderwebs. There are strings everywhere. All my tools
26
00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:30.980
are tied together. There's piano wire stretching from the ceiling
27
00:01:31.019 --> 00:01:34.959
to the floor. Rubber bands on the chairs. Ellie, this
28
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:38.310
is a little embarrassing. It's not usually like this. I
29
00:01:38.370 --> 00:01:39.950
like my workspaces nice and tidy.
30
00:01:40.450 --> 00:01:42.370
Molly, are you in here?
31
00:01:42.390 --> 00:01:43.290
Who's that?
32
00:01:43.750 --> 00:01:44.230
What time is it?
33
00:01:45.310 --> 00:01:45.709
Oh, gosh.
34
00:01:45.730 --> 00:01:47.650
It's time to meet Ellie and record the new bridge.
35
00:01:47.909 --> 00:01:50.170
Oh, Ellie, you're here with Mark.
36
00:01:50.209 --> 00:01:50.530
Hi.
37
00:01:50.810 --> 00:01:51.439
I'm so sorry.
38
00:01:51.450 --> 00:01:53.680
I've been doing some string theory research and I was
39
00:01:53.879 --> 00:01:56.579
up all night. I took a really long nap under
40
00:01:56.640 --> 00:01:57.659
Mark's work table and.
41
00:01:57.680 --> 00:01:59.200
String theory? Like from physics?
42
00:01:59.549 --> 00:01:59.700
What?
43
00:02:00.120 --> 00:02:00.439
Physics?
44
00:02:00.709 --> 00:02:01.079
No, no, no.
45
00:02:01.510 --> 00:02:04.489
My string theory is the idea that you can make
46
00:02:04.530 --> 00:02:08.189
an instrument out of any kind of string. I'm close
47
00:02:08.270 --> 00:02:11.430
to a real breakthrough, but I will admit that string
48
00:02:11.490 --> 00:02:13.289
cheese has been a little tricky.
49
00:02:13.879 --> 00:02:16.460
Good thing we're talking about stringed instruments on the show today.
50
00:02:16.900 --> 00:02:19.840
Yeah, pretty convenient. Let's go, Ellie. I just need to
51
00:02:19.860 --> 00:02:22.080
make a quick stop to grab a blueberry scone from
52
00:02:22.120 --> 00:02:22.879
my snack office.
53
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:23.560
Wait!
54
00:02:23.860 --> 00:02:26.219
But all my tools are still tied together, and there's
55
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:30.319
dental floss wrapped around all the cabinets, and... Molly, did
56
00:02:30.360 --> 00:02:32.280
you eat all my string cheese?
57
00:02:32.610 --> 00:02:40.289
Gotta go. Bye, Mark. You're listening to Brains On from
58
00:02:40.389 --> 00:02:43.909
APM Studios. I'm Molly Bloom, and I'm here with my co-host, Ellie,
59
00:02:44.180 --> 00:02:47.139
from Toronto, Canada. So glad you're here, Ellie.
60
00:02:47.180 --> 00:02:47.520
Hi!
61
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:50.840
Me too, Molly. Um, I think you might have some
62
00:02:50.879 --> 00:02:51.879
silly string in your hair.
63
00:02:52.270 --> 00:02:55.449
Oh, yep. Got it. Thank you so much. So Ellie,
64
00:02:55.650 --> 00:02:58.610
you sent in a great question to us. Please remind
65
00:02:58.689 --> 00:02:59.310
us what it was.
66
00:02:59.849 --> 00:03:02.789
I wanted to know how stringed instruments make different sounds.
67
00:03:03.379 --> 00:03:06.159
Excellent question. So what made you think of this question?
68
00:03:06.580 --> 00:03:11.340
I was playing my harp and I noticed that some
69
00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:16.400
strings have more of a twangy rubber band sound, whereas
70
00:03:16.520 --> 00:03:18.810
some are more Slightly more musical.
71
00:03:19.330 --> 00:03:22.189
Oh, interesting. So you play the harp. Yes, I do.
72
00:03:22.710 --> 00:03:24.430
And you brought it with you today, right?
73
00:03:24.590 --> 00:03:25.189
Yes, I did.
74
00:03:25.650 --> 00:03:29.930
So, Ellie, can you play the string that you think
75
00:03:29.990 --> 00:03:35.319
sounds a little more rubber bandy twangy? And then can
76
00:03:35.340 --> 00:03:37.699
you play the one that you think sounds more musical?
77
00:03:41.319 --> 00:03:43.819
So is it that the twangy one is that a
78
00:03:43.819 --> 00:03:45.900
little higher? Is that why it sounds like that, do
79
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:46.259
you think?
80
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:50.039
I don't know. I just think it sounds more like
81
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:50.800
a rubber band.
82
00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:53.569
Okay. So can you just play a little bit of
83
00:03:53.590 --> 00:03:55.030
the harp for us as a song that you like
84
00:03:55.069 --> 00:03:55.409
to play?
85
00:03:55.789 --> 00:04:04.610
Sure. That's very beautiful.
86
00:04:05.389 --> 00:04:05.460
So.
87
00:04:16.029 --> 00:04:18.009
I mean, it's a gorgeous instrument, but what made you
88
00:04:18.069 --> 00:04:19.310
want to play the harp?
89
00:04:19.810 --> 00:04:22.810
My mama suggested it to me. I did some research
90
00:04:22.870 --> 00:04:25.269
on it, and I thought it sounded really beautiful, and
91
00:04:25.310 --> 00:04:26.790
I thought it would be fun to try to play.
92
00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:28.600
And I've really enjoyed it.
93
00:04:29.060 --> 00:04:30.079
How long have you been playing it for?
94
00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:35.800
I'm pretty sure I started when I was eight.
95
00:04:36.439 --> 00:04:36.800
Okay.
96
00:04:37.319 --> 00:04:38.060
And how old are you now?
97
00:04:38.699 --> 00:04:39.240
I am ten.
98
00:04:39.660 --> 00:04:40.019
Okay.
99
00:04:40.040 --> 00:04:43.839
It's been a couple years. That's amazing. It sounds so good.
100
00:04:44.750 --> 00:04:46.829
I guess we should learn first a little bit how
101
00:04:46.930 --> 00:04:49.889
you get the harp to make different notes.
102
00:04:50.850 --> 00:04:55.970
So all along the harp, there are different strings.
103
00:04:56.410 --> 00:05:02.089
Gotcha. Can you play the lowest note for me? And
104
00:05:02.389 --> 00:05:08.129
can you play the highest note? Ooh, that's a big range.
105
00:05:08.470 --> 00:05:11.350
Are there like exercises or warm-ups you do on the harp?
106
00:05:11.410 --> 00:05:12.300
Yes, there are.
107
00:05:12.680 --> 00:05:26.439
Could you play one of those for us? Ooh, that's
108
00:05:26.540 --> 00:05:29.610
very soothing. I could listen to you do that all day.
109
00:05:29.629 --> 00:05:32.269
But I suppose we have an episode to tape, so
110
00:05:32.290 --> 00:05:34.649
I guess we'll stop for the time being. But maybe
111
00:05:34.670 --> 00:05:39.689
later you can play me some more. Well, to really
112
00:05:39.709 --> 00:05:42.910
understand how incredible the world of stringed instruments is, I
113
00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:44.920
think we need to start with what I like to
114
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:46.199
call the wiggle wave.
115
00:05:46.220 --> 00:05:48.300
Ooh, is that an interpretive dance?
116
00:05:48.839 --> 00:05:49.899
Or are we waving hi to worms?
117
00:05:50.339 --> 00:05:51.600
Is it a worm dance party?
118
00:05:51.930 --> 00:05:55.689
That sounds fantastic, but I'm actually talking about stringed instruments
119
00:05:55.829 --> 00:05:59.439
making wiggles in the air. Like I always say, moving
120
00:05:59.579 --> 00:06:02.480
air around is the key to sound. Let me give
121
00:06:02.500 --> 00:06:08.699
you an example. Let's see. Oh, okay. Here's a rubber band.
122
00:06:09.389 --> 00:06:13.430
I'm going to stretch it out between my two pointer fingers. Now, Ellie,
123
00:06:13.470 --> 00:06:16.050
grab one side of the rubber band and give it
124
00:06:16.250 --> 00:06:19.529
a little pull. Okay, so you heard that sound, right?
125
00:06:19.970 --> 00:06:22.029
When you pulled back the rubber band and let it go,
126
00:06:22.050 --> 00:06:24.730
it moved back and forth really, really quickly in a
127
00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:27.199
wiggly wave motion. Here, let's try it again.
128
00:06:28.279 --> 00:06:30.279
Yeah, I can see the rubber band going up and
129
00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:31.740
down really fast when it wiggles.
130
00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:35.199
As it goes boinging back and forth, the band pushes
131
00:06:35.259 --> 00:06:37.680
against the air around it, pushing it outward in the
132
00:06:37.779 --> 00:06:42.819
same wiggly wave pattern. Those wiggly vibrations push more air
133
00:06:43.290 --> 00:06:45.649
and on and on until those sound waves get to
134
00:06:45.689 --> 00:06:46.930
your ear and you hear.
135
00:06:48.199 --> 00:06:50.279
It's like the sound of the rubber band is touching
136
00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:51.439
my ear through the air.
137
00:06:52.199 --> 00:06:54.790
Yeah, and the bigger the sound waves are, the louder
138
00:06:54.819 --> 00:06:58.009
the sound. The smaller the waves are, the quieter the sound.
139
00:06:58.569 --> 00:06:59.569
That's volume.
140
00:07:00.050 --> 00:07:03.149
Okay, but what about different notes? That's not the same
141
00:07:03.209 --> 00:07:05.550
as how loud or quiet a sound is.
142
00:07:06.329 --> 00:07:06.540
Right.
143
00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:11.259
This note is different from this note, even if they're
144
00:07:11.279 --> 00:07:15.920
the same volume. The two notes are different pitches. Pitch
145
00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.899
is whether a note sounds higher or lower, like these
146
00:07:18.980 --> 00:07:24.769
notes on the cello. They're low. Low sounds make waves
147
00:07:24.829 --> 00:07:26.889
that are long and far apart.
148
00:07:29.529 --> 00:07:33.449
Whoa, that's super low. So those are some really wide waves.
149
00:07:34.009 --> 00:07:36.810
Higher sounds make waves that are much closer together.
150
00:07:37.250 --> 00:07:39.050
Yeah, like these high notes on a guitar.
151
00:07:42.290 --> 00:07:42.949
How about a kazoo?
152
00:07:45.279 --> 00:07:48.600
Technically, a kazoo doesn't have strings, but we'll allow it. Wait,
153
00:07:48.980 --> 00:07:52.449
that's a great idea. Where's my string theory research book?
154
00:07:53.529 --> 00:07:58.370
Add strings to kazoo? Fantastic.
155
00:07:59.110 --> 00:08:02.189
So instruments make sound by creating invisible waves in the air.
156
00:08:02.629 --> 00:08:04.750
The volume of the sound depends on how big or
157
00:08:04.769 --> 00:08:07.740
small the waves are. And the pitch is how close
158
00:08:07.769 --> 00:08:09.420
together or far apart the waves are.
159
00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:13.060
Speaking of sound waves, we've got some very tricky ones
160
00:08:13.139 --> 00:08:15.290
coming your way. It's time for the.
161
00:08:15.310 --> 00:08:20.339
Mystery Sound.
162
00:08:22.279 --> 00:08:23.600
Are you ready for the mystery sound, Ellie?
163
00:08:23.860 --> 00:08:24.100
Yes.
164
00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:24.980
Here it is.
165
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:41.429
Whoa.
166
00:08:42.509 --> 00:08:42.690
Whoa.
167
00:08:43.629 --> 00:08:45.649
What was that? What do you think?
168
00:08:46.429 --> 00:08:52.919
To me, it kind of sounds like someone's spinning a
169
00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:56.340
top or rolling a die on top of, like, a guitar.
170
00:08:56.360 --> 00:08:59.419
Ooh, I love that. Yeah, I have no idea what
171
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:02.049
this is either, so I am stumped. Should we hear
172
00:09:02.070 --> 00:09:02.350
it again?
173
00:09:02.490 --> 00:09:03.470
Yes. Okay.
174
00:09:21.389 --> 00:09:23.100
What do you think now? Any new thoughts?
175
00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:27.139
I think I'm going to stick to my original guess.
176
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:30.419
Yeah, I think top is a great guess. I'm very
177
00:09:30.460 --> 00:09:33.519
impressed with whoever spun that top, though, because it lasted forever.
178
00:09:33.539 --> 00:09:37.259
It did. That's a very good top spinner. All right. Well,
179
00:09:37.639 --> 00:09:39.539
we will hear it again, get another chance to guess
180
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:42.519
and hear the answer after the credits. So stick around.

We love getting your questions, mystery sounds, and high fives.
190

00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:29.500
your artwork inspired by the show. Maybe you want to
193
00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:32.990
draw a picture of my snack office or an instrument
194
00:10:33.049 --> 00:10:36.470
petting zoo. You can send us your drawings at brainson.org

196
00:10:39.149 --> 00:10:40.830
mystery sounds, drawings, and questions.
197
00:10:41.169 --> 00:10:41.769
Like this one.
198
00:10:42.330 --> 00:10:45.840
My question is, why do hot sauce make your nose run?
199
00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:48.379
You can find answers to questions like these on the

Forever Ago. A history podcast starring Joy Dolo.
213
00:11:40.429 --> 00:11:44.230
Fleer's gum was so sticky, when the bubble popped, it
214
00:11:44.269 --> 00:11:46.029
was so hard to get off your skin.
215
00:11:46.389 --> 00:11:48.720
You'd have to scrub it off with harsh chemicals.
216
00:11:49.299 --> 00:11:52.159
Me love sticky facts.
217
00:11:52.580 --> 00:11:52.899

229
00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:43.240
You're listening to Brains On. I'm Ellie.
230
00:12:43.559 --> 00:12:46.200
And I'm Molly. And we've been talking about how stringed
231
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:47.600
instruments make sounds.
232
00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:51.320
It starts when you pluck or strum or bow a string,
233
00:12:51.639 --> 00:12:53.840
which makes that string vibrate or wiggle.
234
00:12:54.279 --> 00:12:57.120
Those wiggles from the string push on the air around
235
00:12:57.159 --> 00:13:00.110
it and make that air wiggle too. That makes a
236
00:13:00.149 --> 00:13:03.080
sound wave which travels to our ears. And speaking of
237
00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:05.740
sound waves, we asked all of you to make some
238
00:13:05.799 --> 00:13:09.960
waves by recreating the Brains On theme song. Check it out.
239
00:13:32.549 --> 00:14:01.110
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
240
00:14:40.950 --> 00:14:47.230
Wow. Many thanks to Gavin, Cooper, Carter, Charlie, Asher, Mia, Caleb, Lucy, Eddie, Waylon,
241
00:14:47.350 --> 00:14:51.820
and Roxy for those incredible renditions. I am in awe
242
00:14:52.220 --> 00:14:57.879
of your magical music minds. So good. I still hear
243
00:14:57.919 --> 00:14:58.620
them in my head.
244
00:14:59.070 --> 00:15:02.730
That's not coming from your head. It's coming from your pocket.
245
00:15:03.289 --> 00:15:08.029
Oh, it's my phone, and it's Brains On producer Anna Goldfield. Hey, Anna,
246
00:15:08.070 --> 00:15:08.549
what's up?
247
00:15:08.750 --> 00:15:10.009
Hey, Molly, are you with Ellie?
248
00:15:10.509 --> 00:15:12.370
Uh-huh, yeah, Ellie's here with me, and we're talking about
249
00:15:12.429 --> 00:15:13.149
stringed instruments.
250
00:15:13.429 --> 00:15:13.649
Why?
251
00:15:13.669 --> 00:15:16.090
I'm feeding the instruments at the petting zoo. You want
252
00:15:16.110 --> 00:15:16.509
to come by?
253
00:15:16.789 --> 00:15:20.370
Feeding time? At the instrument petting zoo? Heck yeah, we'll
254
00:15:20.409 --> 00:15:21.889
be right there. Come on, Ellie.
255
00:15:22.889 --> 00:15:24.330
Brains, brains, brains.
256
00:15:26.049 --> 00:15:26.860
Here we are.
257
00:15:28.139 --> 00:15:31.649
Hey, Molly. Hi, Ellie. I'm so glad you're here. Hang on,
258
00:15:31.690 --> 00:15:34.769
just let me wash my hands. Feeding the trombones always
259
00:15:34.789 --> 00:15:35.529
gets so messy.
260
00:15:36.809 --> 00:15:37.210
That's better.
261
00:15:37.789 --> 00:15:39.549
Welcome to the Instrument Petting Zoo.
262
00:15:39.929 --> 00:15:43.950
It's just a room with lots and lots of instruments.
263
00:15:44.850 --> 00:15:46.330
Laying on the floor?
264
00:15:47.049 --> 00:15:53.990
Just instruments? These are my prized instrument herds. All free-range, well-trained,
265
00:15:54.129 --> 00:15:57.419
and totally pampered. And when the herd and I heard
266
00:15:57.460 --> 00:16:00.039
you were going to be talking about stringed instruments, I
267
00:16:00.080 --> 00:16:03.440
wanted to show them off. Anna's ukulele won first prize
268
00:16:03.580 --> 00:16:05.799
at the fair last year. See, it's got a blue
269
00:16:05.860 --> 00:16:06.429
ribbon on it.
270
00:16:06.700 --> 00:16:09.820
Wow. Ellie and I were just talking about how strings
271
00:16:09.919 --> 00:16:11.340
make sound waves in the air.
272
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:14.159
And how we hear the sound waves as notes. They
273
00:16:14.200 --> 00:16:18.470
can be higher or lower and louder or softer. But
274
00:16:18.789 --> 00:16:21.129
I still want to know why instruments sound different from
275
00:16:21.230 --> 00:16:21.649
one another.
276
00:16:22.110 --> 00:16:23.509
That's a fantastic question.
277
00:16:24.029 --> 00:16:26.669
Another one of my string theories is that it depends
278
00:16:26.809 --> 00:16:31.100
on what you feed your instruments. A well-fed instrument always
279
00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:34.659
sounds better, right, Anna? Only the best diets of healthy
280
00:16:34.700 --> 00:16:38.139
whole notes for my little orchestra. But really, it's all
281
00:16:38.179 --> 00:16:42.259
about how each instrument bounces those sound waves around. Instruments
282
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:45.389
have different shapes and are made of different things. All
283
00:16:45.429 --> 00:16:47.049
of that can change the sound they make.
284
00:16:47.690 --> 00:16:50.990
Yeah, my harp and your guitar are really different shapes
285
00:16:51.029 --> 00:16:54.639
and sizes. And they make really different sounds. Exactly.
286
00:16:55.059 --> 00:16:58.490
Here, let me show you with my acoustic guitar. Come here, baby.
287
00:16:59.809 --> 00:17:00.230
Yeah.
288
00:17:00.809 --> 00:17:04.049
So an acoustic guitar usually has six strings and a
289
00:17:04.109 --> 00:17:08.109
hollow body made out of wood. The strings start at
290
00:17:08.130 --> 00:17:10.210
the top of the neck. That's where you press down
291
00:17:10.269 --> 00:17:12.680
to make different notes. And at the other end of
292
00:17:12.720 --> 00:17:15.200
the guitar, the strings are stretched over a thin piece
293
00:17:15.240 --> 00:17:18.700
of wood called a bridge that helps pass vibrations into
294
00:17:18.740 --> 00:17:21.779
the guitar. You can pluck the strings and it sounds
295
00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:26.900
like this. Or you can strum them like this.
296
00:17:30.200 --> 00:17:31.869
And there's a hole right in the middle of the
297
00:17:31.910 --> 00:17:33.589
guitar underneath where you're strumming.
298
00:17:34.210 --> 00:17:37.809
Another one of my string theories is that strings make
299
00:17:37.950 --> 00:17:42.430
better sound waves if you complement them regularly. And also
300
00:17:42.539 --> 00:17:44.859
if the sound waves can bounce around a lot. And
301
00:17:44.940 --> 00:17:48.839
bouncing is exactly what's happening. When I play the strings...
302
00:17:48.980 --> 00:17:52.099
They vibrate throughout the guitar and through this round hole
303
00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:53.359
in the middle called the sound hole.
304
00:17:53.720 --> 00:17:56.529
And then they keep bouncing off the walls inside the guitar?
305
00:17:56.710 --> 00:17:59.769
Yeah, it's kind of like when you yell into a tunnel,
306
00:17:59.950 --> 00:18:04.329
you know? I love to yell! Your voice makes sound
307
00:18:04.349 --> 00:18:06.509
waves that bounce around the tunnel, and you hear the
308
00:18:06.589 --> 00:18:08.759
echoes all coming back on top of each other.
309
00:18:09.220 --> 00:18:11.660
So the inside of the guitar is like the inside
310
00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:13.640
of a tunnel, bouncing sound waves around.
311
00:18:14.140 --> 00:18:14.559
Yes, exactly.
312
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:17.160
And the sound waves come back out of the sound hole,
313
00:18:17.299 --> 00:18:20.059
making a bigger, rounder, and fuller sound than just the
314
00:18:20.119 --> 00:18:23.319
strings twanging on their own. The shape of an instrument
315
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:26.210
and the stuff it's made from can totally change how
316
00:18:26.250 --> 00:18:27.130
those strings sound.
317
00:18:27.509 --> 00:18:27.789
How?
318
00:18:28.230 --> 00:18:31.910
I'll show you. How about we play a little guessing game?
319
00:18:32.529 --> 00:18:35.349
I'll play three of my beautiful instrument buddies for you.
320
00:18:35.890 --> 00:18:37.990
You can try to figure out which instruments are making
321
00:18:38.009 --> 00:18:40.890
the sounds, and then I'll tell you how their shape
322
00:18:41.089 --> 00:18:44.390
and how they're made influences the sound. Molly and Ellie,
323
00:18:44.470 --> 00:18:49.220
are you ready? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, here's instrument number one.
324
00:18:49.240 --> 00:18:53.680
That was fun. What do you think, Ellie?
325
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:17.740
I think that was the sound of maybe a banjo.
326
00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:21.880
Oh, yeah. Kind of had that sound like someone strumming strings,
327
00:19:21.960 --> 00:19:24.289
kind of like a guitar. It sounded like between a
328
00:19:24.309 --> 00:19:25.569
guitar and a banjo.
329
00:19:25.809 --> 00:19:27.650
But not really a ukulele.
330
00:19:28.089 --> 00:19:29.569
Yeah, I agree. Okay.
331
00:19:30.009 --> 00:19:31.509
More of a country sound.
332
00:19:31.910 --> 00:19:35.009
More of a country sound. I'm going to go with
333
00:19:35.430 --> 00:19:39.130
a tiny guitar that's not a ukulele. Are we right?
334
00:19:39.549 --> 00:19:43.069
So you were right on the money with your thought
335
00:19:43.130 --> 00:19:46.049
that maybe it was kind of country because this instrument
336
00:19:46.130 --> 00:19:48.930
is used in country and bluegrass music a lot. That
337
00:19:48.970 --> 00:19:49.759
was a mandolin.
338
00:19:50.220 --> 00:19:51.579
What's a mandolin, Anna?
339
00:19:51.940 --> 00:19:53.400
I've never heard of it before.
340
00:19:53.900 --> 00:19:57.839
Well, a mandolin is an instrument that's around the same
341
00:19:57.920 --> 00:20:00.819
size as a violin. So you can hold it pretty
342
00:20:00.940 --> 00:20:04.470
easily in one hand. And the body of it is
343
00:20:04.529 --> 00:20:10.349
kind of a teardrop shape. And it's got... four notes
344
00:20:10.750 --> 00:20:13.170
like a violin it's tuned like a violin but each
345
00:20:13.309 --> 00:20:16.730
note is played by two strings so there are pairs
346
00:20:16.789 --> 00:20:19.990
of strings and it gives it that kind of full
347
00:20:20.509 --> 00:20:23.349
sound that nice round sound that you heard but it
348
00:20:23.390 --> 00:20:26.250
makes it really tricky to tune all.
349
00:20:26.150 --> 00:20:44.980
Right will you please show us instrument number two so Wow.
350
00:20:46.039 --> 00:20:48.549
That was deep. What do you think, Ellie?
351
00:20:49.369 --> 00:20:53.630
It sounded kind of like maybe like a cello.
352
00:20:55.430 --> 00:21:00.390
Good guess. I think it sounds even deeper than a cello.
353
00:21:02.259 --> 00:21:03.740
Is it a bass? What is it called? Is it
354
00:21:03.759 --> 00:21:07.220
a bass? Like the one that stands upright? Like a
355
00:21:07.259 --> 00:21:08.200
really big cello?
356
00:21:08.779 --> 00:21:09.039
Yeah.
357
00:21:09.660 --> 00:21:14.000
You nailed it. It is an upright bass. So those
358
00:21:14.059 --> 00:21:18.420
are some big, big, wide sound waves because the notes
359
00:21:18.460 --> 00:21:20.720
were so low. So I want you to picture a
360
00:21:21.089 --> 00:21:23.710
violin with that kind of figure eight shape and the
361
00:21:23.869 --> 00:21:27.210
F-shaped holes in the body and then the neck and
362
00:21:27.230 --> 00:21:29.390
the tuning pegs. And then I want you to imagine
363
00:21:29.410 --> 00:21:32.539
that that violin is six feet tall because that's how
364
00:21:32.599 --> 00:21:33.539
big a string bass is.
365
00:21:33.759 --> 00:21:34.400
Whoa.
366
00:21:34.779 --> 00:21:37.160
That's very tall for an instrument.
367
00:21:37.799 --> 00:21:38.119
All right.
368
00:21:38.700 --> 00:21:41.099
Are you ready for instrument number three?
369
00:21:41.619 --> 00:21:41.799
Yes.
370
00:21:41.839 --> 00:21:41.980
Yes.
371
00:22:00.140 --> 00:22:01.079
What do you think, Ellie?
372
00:22:01.619 --> 00:22:06.950
I hear guitar-y sounds, but then again, I also hear
373
00:22:07.089 --> 00:22:11.130
high-pitched buzzing like a trumpet. But I also hear metal clicking,
374
00:22:11.210 --> 00:22:12.049
so I don't really know.
375
00:22:12.589 --> 00:22:16.130
Yeah, those are really good observations. I think I have
376
00:22:16.170 --> 00:22:18.549
an idea what it is. Okay. Is this an instrument
377
00:22:18.589 --> 00:22:23.430
from India? It is. Tell us what it is.
378
00:22:23.839 --> 00:22:26.680
That was the sound of a sitar. The sitar is
379
00:22:26.720 --> 00:22:30.059
a plucked string instrument. It's related to a lute, and
380
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:32.619
it's about four feet long, and you play it sitting
381
00:22:32.640 --> 00:22:35.039
down with the body in your lap. The body is
382
00:22:35.519 --> 00:22:38.339
kind of a pear-shaped gourd, and it's got a long,
383
00:22:38.480 --> 00:22:41.369
wide neck. that you kind of hold up at an
384
00:22:41.569 --> 00:22:45.049
angle and play. And sitars can have between 18 and
385
00:22:45.049 --> 00:22:48.509
21 strings. And that's because some of the strings are
386
00:22:48.549 --> 00:22:52.529
for plucking and some lined up underneath the plucked strings
387
00:22:52.829 --> 00:22:56.430
are sympathetic. That doesn't mean they'll sit and listen to
388
00:22:56.470 --> 00:22:59.829
your problems. Sympathetic vibration is when a sound or other
389
00:22:59.849 --> 00:23:03.230
type of wave passes from one object to another. So
390
00:23:03.579 --> 00:23:06.759
When the sitar player plucks the top strings that are
391
00:23:06.839 --> 00:23:09.769
stretched over these high, curved wooden bridges that hold them
392
00:23:09.880 --> 00:23:12.460
up off the body of the instrument, the sound waves
393
00:23:12.720 --> 00:23:15.890
also travel to the strings underneath. And those vibrate a
394
00:23:15.910 --> 00:23:19.549
little bit. And that makes that twangy, echoey sound that
395
00:23:19.569 --> 00:23:19.910
you heard.
396
00:23:20.150 --> 00:23:22.109
That's so cool. That's amazing.
397
00:23:22.250 --> 00:23:24.769
Yeah, sitar's fun. Thank you both so much for playing
398
00:23:24.809 --> 00:23:25.109
with me.
399
00:23:25.349 --> 00:23:26.069
Thank you, Anna.
400
00:23:26.250 --> 00:23:29.289
That was so fun. And I think this proves my
401
00:23:29.470 --> 00:23:33.470
biggest string theory of all. Stringed instruments are wonderful because
402
00:23:33.509 --> 00:23:37.670
they make so many amazing sounds. What a breakthrough! Maybe
403
00:23:37.730 --> 00:23:40.049
now I can finally make the stringed cheese harp I've
404
00:23:40.089 --> 00:23:42.910
been dreaming of. Where's my notebook?
405
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:52.119
Stringed instruments push air into wiggly sound waves which travel
406
00:23:52.160 --> 00:23:52.779
to our ears.
407
00:23:53.279 --> 00:23:56.319
Loud sound waves are made up of big, wiggly waves,
408
00:23:56.680 --> 00:23:59.519
and soft sounds are made up of smaller, wiggly waves.
409
00:23:59.980 --> 00:24:02.460
The pitch of a sound is how high or.
410
00:24:02.640 --> 00:24:03.599
Low it is.
411
00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:06.809
And stringed instruments sound different from each other because of
412
00:24:06.869 --> 00:24:10.309
the different tools used to hit, pluck, or play them.
413
00:24:10.710 --> 00:24:12.769
Plus the size and shape of their bodies.
414
00:24:13.509 --> 00:24:16.069
That's it for this episode of Brains On.
415
00:24:16.470 --> 00:24:19.539
This episode was written by Anna Goldfield. It was produced
416
00:24:19.619 --> 00:24:22.900
by Molly Bloom and Rosie Dupont. Our editors are Sanan
417

00:24:26.869 --> 00:24:31.170
We had engineering help from Gary O'Keefe, Derek Ramirez, Lucien Lozon,
419
00:24:31.339 --> 00:24:34.359
and Bill Walker with sound design by Rachel Brees. Original
420
00:24:34.380 --> 00:24:37.880
theme music by Mark Sanchez. We had production help from

and questions.
433
00:25:12.619 --> 00:25:14.940
Speaking of mystery sounds, Ellie, are you ready to hear
434
00:25:14.980 --> 00:25:15.599
that sound again?
435
00:25:15.619 --> 00:25:15.690
Yep.
436
00:25:16.579 --> 00:25:16.779
Sweet.
437
00:25:34.500 --> 00:25:36.519
Nice. Okay, what do we think?
438
00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:40.910
I'm still sticking to my original guess. The die or
439
00:25:41.009 --> 00:25:45.430
the top rolling or spinning on top of a guitar
440
00:25:46.069 --> 00:25:46.589
or a table.
441
00:25:46.950 --> 00:25:48.829
I love that guess. I have no idea, so I'm
442
00:25:48.849 --> 00:25:52.190
going to stick to your guess too. Let's hear the answer.
443
00:25:52.210 --> 00:25:57.460
Hi, my name is Edgar from Akers, Georgia, and that
444
00:25:57.519 --> 00:26:00.119
was the sound of my top spinning.
445
00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:03.299
Oh my gosh, Ellie. You did it!
446
00:26:04.380 --> 00:26:05.019
You got it right.
447
00:26:05.579 --> 00:26:10.079
How does that feel? Great. Awesome. Have you spun tops before?
448
00:26:10.119 --> 00:26:13.720
You must have. Yes, I have. Can you spin your
449
00:26:13.740 --> 00:26:16.299
tops as long as Edgar can? Because that was pretty impressive, Edgar.
450
00:26:16.940 --> 00:26:17.140
No.
451
00:26:17.460 --> 00:26:20.839
The tables in my house have like cracks on them
452
00:26:21.039 --> 00:26:22.779
for the wood as a design.
453
00:26:22.859 --> 00:26:24.299
So they always get.
454
00:26:24.240 --> 00:26:25.940
Stuck on them. Okay.
455
00:26:25.960 --> 00:26:27.440
We need a better surface for you.
456
00:26:27.460 --> 00:26:28.240
Wow.
457
00:26:28.640 --> 00:26:49.329
Good guessing. Excellent ears. Now it's time for the Brain's
458
00:26:49.470 --> 00:26:51.990
Honor Roll. These are the incredible kids who keep this
459
00:26:52.009 --> 00:26:54.910
show going with their questions, ideas, mystery sounds, drawings, and

00:28:35.690 --> 00:28:38.299
be back next week with an episode all about vacuums.
487
00:28:38.720 --> 00:28:39.559
Thanks for listening.

00:00:36.689 --> 00:00:40.799
You're listening to Brains On, where we're serious about being curious.
9
00:00:41.229 --> 00:00:44.880
Brains On is supported in part by a grant from
10
00:00:44.920 --> 00:00:47.200
the National Science Foundation.
11
00:00:48.079 --> 00:00:49.979
Hey, Mark here with Ellie.
12
00:00:50.179 --> 00:00:50.799
Hi, everyone.
13
00:00:51.020 --> 00:00:53.479
Normally, it would be Molly and our wonderful co-host, Ellie,
14
00:00:53.759 --> 00:00:56.799
who would start the show. But Ellie just arrived at
15
00:00:56.840 --> 00:00:59.939
Brains On HQ, and Molly is nowhere to be found.
16
00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:00.479
Yeah.
17
00:01:00.810 --> 00:01:03.049
So we're going to find her. We already searched all
18
00:01:03.070 --> 00:01:04.129
of her regular spots.
19
00:01:04.549 --> 00:01:09.859
We checked Molly's office, Sandon's wildflower garden, Molly's other office
20
00:01:09.900 --> 00:01:11.680
that she keeps specifically for snacks.
21
00:01:12.120 --> 00:01:13.439
Hey, Mark, what about this room?
22
00:01:13.819 --> 00:01:17.000
Oh, that's the Brains On workshop. Maybe Molly's working on
23
00:01:17.040 --> 00:01:18.790
a project. Let's take a look.
24
00:01:21.510 --> 00:01:22.049
Wow.
25
00:01:22.290 --> 00:01:28.140
Holy supersized spiderwebs. There are strings everywhere. All my tools
26
00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:30.980
are tied together. There's piano wire stretching from the ceiling
27
00:01:31.019 --> 00:01:34.959
to the floor. Rubber bands on the chairs. Ellie, this
28
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:38.310
is a little embarrassing. It's not usually like this. I
29
00:01:38.370 --> 00:01:39.950
like my workspaces nice and tidy.
30
00:01:40.450 --> 00:01:42.370
Molly, are you in here?
31
00:01:42.390 --> 00:01:43.290
Who's that?
32
00:01:43.750 --> 00:01:44.230
What time is it?
33
00:01:45.310 --> 00:01:45.709
Oh, gosh.
34
00:01:45.730 --> 00:01:47.650
It's time to meet Ellie and record the new bridge.
35
00:01:47.909 --> 00:01:50.170
Oh, Ellie, you're here with Mark.
36
00:01:50.209 --> 00:01:50.530
Hi.
37
00:01:50.810 --> 00:01:51.439
I'm so sorry.
38
00:01:51.450 --> 00:01:53.680
I've been doing some string theory research and I was
39
00:01:53.879 --> 00:01:56.579
up all night. I took a really long nap under
40
00:01:56.640 --> 00:01:57.659
Mark's work table and.
41
00:01:57.680 --> 00:01:59.200
String theory? Like from physics?
42
00:01:59.549 --> 00:01:59.700
What?
43
00:02:00.120 --> 00:02:00.439
Physics?
44
00:02:00.709 --> 00:02:01.079
No, no, no.
45
00:02:01.510 --> 00:02:04.489
My string theory is the idea that you can make
46
00:02:04.530 --> 00:02:08.189
an instrument out of any kind of string. I'm close
47
00:02:08.270 --> 00:02:11.430
to a real breakthrough, but I will admit that string
48
00:02:11.490 --> 00:02:13.289
cheese has been a little tricky.
49
00:02:13.879 --> 00:02:16.460
Good thing we're talking about stringed instruments on the show today.
50
00:02:16.900 --> 00:02:19.840
Yeah, pretty convenient. Let's go, Ellie. I just need to
51
00:02:19.860 --> 00:02:22.080
make a quick stop to grab a blueberry scone from
52
00:02:22.120 --> 00:02:22.879
my snack office.
53
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:23.560
Wait!
54
00:02:23.860 --> 00:02:26.219
But all my tools are still tied together, and there's
55
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:30.319
dental floss wrapped around all the cabinets, and... Molly, did
56
00:02:30.360 --> 00:02:32.280
you eat all my string cheese?
57
00:02:32.610 --> 00:02:40.289
Gotta go. Bye, Mark. You're listening to Brains On from
58
00:02:40.389 --> 00:02:43.909
APM Studios. I'm Molly Bloom, and I'm here with my co-host, Ellie,
59
00:02:44.180 --> 00:02:47.139
from Toronto, Canada. So glad you're here, Ellie.
60
00:02:47.180 --> 00:02:47.520
Hi!
61
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:50.840
Me too, Molly. Um, I think you might have some
62
00:02:50.879 --> 00:02:51.879
silly string in your hair.
63
00:02:52.270 --> 00:02:55.449
Oh, yep. Got it. Thank you so much. So Ellie,
64
00:02:55.650 --> 00:02:58.610
you sent in a great question to us. Please remind
65
00:02:58.689 --> 00:02:59.310
us what it was.
66
00:02:59.849 --> 00:03:02.789
I wanted to know how stringed instruments make different sounds.
67
00:03:03.379 --> 00:03:06.159
Excellent question. So what made you think of this question?
68
00:03:06.580 --> 00:03:11.340
I was playing my harp and I noticed that some
69
00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:16.400
strings have more of a twangy rubber band sound, whereas
70
00:03:16.520 --> 00:03:18.810
some are more Slightly more musical.
71
00:03:19.330 --> 00:03:22.189
Oh, interesting. So you play the harp. Yes, I do.
72
00:03:22.710 --> 00:03:24.430
And you brought it with you today, right?
73
00:03:24.590 --> 00:03:25.189
Yes, I did.
74
00:03:25.650 --> 00:03:29.930
So, Ellie, can you play the string that you think
75
00:03:29.990 --> 00:03:35.319
sounds a little more rubber bandy twangy? And then can
76
00:03:35.340 --> 00:03:37.699
you play the one that you think sounds more musical?
77
00:03:41.319 --> 00:03:43.819
So is it that the twangy one is that a
78
00:03:43.819 --> 00:03:45.900
little higher? Is that why it sounds like that, do
79
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:46.259
you think?
80
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:50.039
I don't know. I just think it sounds more like
81
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:50.800
a rubber band.
82
00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:53.569
Okay. So can you just play a little bit of
83
00:03:53.590 --> 00:03:55.030
the harp for us as a song that you like
84
00:03:55.069 --> 00:03:55.409
to play?
85
00:03:55.789 --> 00:04:04.610
Sure. That's very beautiful.
86
00:04:05.389 --> 00:04:05.460
So.
87
00:04:16.029 --> 00:04:18.009
I mean, it's a gorgeous instrument, but what made you
88
00:04:18.069 --> 00:04:19.310
want to play the harp?
89
00:04:19.810 --> 00:04:22.810
My mama suggested it to me. I did some research
90
00:04:22.870 --> 00:04:25.269
on it, and I thought it sounded really beautiful, and
91
00:04:25.310 --> 00:04:26.790
I thought it would be fun to try to play.
92
00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:28.600
And I've really enjoyed it.
93
00:04:29.060 --> 00:04:30.079
How long have you been playing it for?
94
00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:35.800
I'm pretty sure I started when I was eight.
95
00:04:36.439 --> 00:04:36.800
Okay.
96
00:04:37.319 --> 00:04:38.060
And how old are you now?
97
00:04:38.699 --> 00:04:39.240
I am ten.
98
00:04:39.660 --> 00:04:40.019
Okay.
99
00:04:40.040 --> 00:04:43.839
It's been a couple years. That's amazing. It sounds so good.
100
00:04:44.750 --> 00:04:46.829
I guess we should learn first a little bit how
101
00:04:46.930 --> 00:04:49.889
you get the harp to make different notes.
102
00:04:50.850 --> 00:04:55.970
So all along the harp, there are different strings.
103
00:04:56.410 --> 00:05:02.089
Gotcha. Can you play the lowest note for me? And
104
00:05:02.389 --> 00:05:08.129
can you play the highest note? Ooh, that's a big range.
105
00:05:08.470 --> 00:05:11.350
Are there like exercises or warm-ups you do on the harp?
106
00:05:11.410 --> 00:05:12.300
Yes, there are.
107
00:05:12.680 --> 00:05:26.439
Could you play one of those for us? Ooh, that's
108
00:05:26.540 --> 00:05:29.610
very soothing. I could listen to you do that all day.
109
00:05:29.629 --> 00:05:32.269
But I suppose we have an episode to tape, so
110
00:05:32.290 --> 00:05:34.649
I guess we'll stop for the time being. But maybe
111
00:05:34.670 --> 00:05:39.689
later you can play me some more. Well, to really
112
00:05:39.709 --> 00:05:42.910
understand how incredible the world of stringed instruments is, I
113
00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:44.920
think we need to start with what I like to
114
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:46.199
call the wiggle wave.
115
00:05:46.220 --> 00:05:48.300
Ooh, is that an interpretive dance?
116
00:05:48.839 --> 00:05:49.899
Or are we waving hi to worms?
117
00:05:50.339 --> 00:05:51.600
Is it a worm dance party?
118
00:05:51.930 --> 00:05:55.689
That sounds fantastic, but I'm actually talking about stringed instruments
119
00:05:55.829 --> 00:05:59.439
making wiggles in the air. Like I always say, moving
120
00:05:59.579 --> 00:06:02.480
air around is the key to sound. Let me give
121
00:06:02.500 --> 00:06:08.699
you an example. Let's see. Oh, okay. Here's a rubber band.
122
00:06:09.389 --> 00:06:13.430
I'm going to stretch it out between my two pointer fingers. Now, Ellie,
123
00:06:13.470 --> 00:06:16.050
grab one side of the rubber band and give it
124
00:06:16.250 --> 00:06:19.529
a little pull. Okay, so you heard that sound, right?
125
00:06:19.970 --> 00:06:22.029
When you pulled back the rubber band and let it go,
126
00:06:22.050 --> 00:06:24.730
it moved back and forth really, really quickly in a
127
00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:27.199
wiggly wave motion. Here, let's try it again.
128
00:06:28.279 --> 00:06:30.279
Yeah, I can see the rubber band going up and
129
00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:31.740
down really fast when it wiggles.
130
00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:35.199
As it goes boinging back and forth, the band pushes
131
00:06:35.259 --> 00:06:37.680
against the air around it, pushing it outward in the
132
00:06:37.779 --> 00:06:42.819
same wiggly wave pattern. Those wiggly vibrations push more air
133
00:06:43.290 --> 00:06:45.649
and on and on until those sound waves get to
134
00:06:45.689 --> 00:06:46.930
your ear and you hear.
135
00:06:48.199 --> 00:06:50.279
It's like the sound of the rubber band is touching
136
00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:51.439
my ear through the air.
137
00:06:52.199 --> 00:06:54.790
Yeah, and the bigger the sound waves are, the louder
138
00:06:54.819 --> 00:06:58.009
the sound. The smaller the waves are, the quieter the sound.
139
00:06:58.569 --> 00:06:59.569
That's volume.
140
00:07:00.050 --> 00:07:03.149
Okay, but what about different notes? That's not the same
141
00:07:03.209 --> 00:07:05.550
as how loud or quiet a sound is.
142
00:07:06.329 --> 00:07:06.540
Right.
143
00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:11.259
This note is different from this note, even if they're
144
00:07:11.279 --> 00:07:15.920
the same volume. The two notes are different pitches. Pitch
145
00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:18.899
is whether a note sounds higher or lower, like these
146
00:07:18.980 --> 00:07:24.769
notes on the cello. They're low. Low sounds make waves
147
00:07:24.829 --> 00:07:26.889
that are long and far apart.
148
00:07:29.529 --> 00:07:33.449
Whoa, that's super low. So those are some really wide waves.
149
00:07:34.009 --> 00:07:36.810
Higher sounds make waves that are much closer together.
150
00:07:37.250 --> 00:07:39.050
Yeah, like these high notes on a guitar.
151
00:07:42.290 --> 00:07:42.949
How about a kazoo?
152
00:07:45.279 --> 00:07:48.600
Technically, a kazoo doesn't have strings, but we'll allow it. Wait,
153
00:07:48.980 --> 00:07:52.449
that's a great idea. Where's my string theory research book?
154
00:07:53.529 --> 00:07:58.370
Add strings to kazoo? Fantastic.
155
00:07:59.110 --> 00:08:02.189
So instruments make sound by creating invisible waves in the air.
156
00:08:02.629 --> 00:08:04.750
The volume of the sound depends on how big or
157
00:08:04.769 --> 00:08:07.740
small the waves are. And the pitch is how close
158
00:08:07.769 --> 00:08:09.420
together or far apart the waves are.
159
00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:13.060
Speaking of sound waves, we've got some very tricky ones
160
00:08:13.139 --> 00:08:15.290
coming your way. It's time for the.
161
00:08:15.310 --> 00:08:20.339
Mystery Sound.
162
00:08:22.279 --> 00:08:23.600
Are you ready for the mystery sound, Ellie?
163
00:08:23.860 --> 00:08:24.100
Yes.
164
00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:24.980
Here it is.
165
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:41.429
Whoa.
166
00:08:42.509 --> 00:08:42.690
Whoa.
167
00:08:43.629 --> 00:08:45.649
What was that? What do you think?
168
00:08:46.429 --> 00:08:52.919
To me, it kind of sounds like someone's spinning a
169
00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:56.340
top or rolling a die on top of, like, a guitar.
170
00:08:56.360 --> 00:08:59.419
Ooh, I love that. Yeah, I have no idea what
171
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:02.049
this is either, so I am stumped. Should we hear
172
00:09:02.070 --> 00:09:02.350
it again?
173
00:09:02.490 --> 00:09:03.470
Yes. Okay.
174
00:09:21.389 --> 00:09:23.100
What do you think now? Any new thoughts?
175
00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:27.139
I think I'm going to stick to my original guess.
176
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:30.419
Yeah, I think top is a great guess. I'm very
177
00:09:30.460 --> 00:09:33.519
impressed with whoever spun that top, though, because it lasted forever.
178
00:09:33.539 --> 00:09:37.259
It did. That's a very good top spinner. All right. Well,
179
00:09:37.639 --> 00:09:39.539
we will hear it again, get another chance to guess
180
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:42.519
and hear the answer after the credits. So stick around.
181
00:09:45.080 --> 00:09:48.299
Are you ready for a brand new adventure? Then check

your artwork inspired by the show. Maybe you want to
193
00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:32.990
draw a picture of my snack office or an instrument
194
00:10:33.049 --> 00:10:36.470
petting zoo. You can send us your drawings at brainson.org

mystery sounds, drawings, and questions.
197
00:10:41.169 --> 00:10:41.769
Like this one.
198
00:10:42.330 --> 00:10:45.840
My question is, why do hot sauce make your nose run?
199
00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:48.379
You can find answers to questions like these on the

Forever Ago. A history podcast starring Joy Dolo.
213
00:11:40.429 --> 00:11:44.230
Fleer's gum was so sticky, when the bubble popped, it
214
00:11:44.269 --> 00:11:46.029
was so hard to get off your skin.
215
00:11:46.389 --> 00:11:48.720
You'd have to scrub it off with harsh chemicals.
216
00:11:49.299 --> 00:11:52.159
Me love sticky facts.
217
00:11:52.580 --> 00:11:52.899

229
00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:43.240
You're listening to Brains On. I'm Ellie.
230
00:12:43.559 --> 00:12:46.200
And I'm Molly. And we've been talking about how stringed
231
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:47.600
instruments make sounds.
232
00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:51.320
It starts when you pluck or strum or bow a string,
233
00:12:51.639 --> 00:12:53.840
which makes that string vibrate or wiggle.
234
00:12:54.279 --> 00:12:57.120
Those wiggles from the string push on the air around
235
00:12:57.159 --> 00:13:00.110
it and make that air wiggle too. That makes a
236
00:13:00.149 --> 00:13:03.080
sound wave which travels to our ears. And speaking of
237
00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:05.740
sound waves, we asked all of you to make some
238
00:13:05.799 --> 00:13:09.960
waves by recreating the Brains On theme song. Check it out.
239
00:13:32.549 --> 00:14:01.110
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
240
00:14:40.950 --> 00:14:47.230
Wow. Many thanks to Gavin, Cooper, Carter, Charlie, Asher, Mia, Caleb, Lucy, Eddie, Waylon,
241
00:14:47.350 --> 00:14:51.820
and Roxy for those incredible renditions. I am in awe
242
00:14:52.220 --> 00:14:57.879
of your magical music minds. So good. I still hear
243
00:14:57.919 --> 00:14:58.620
them in my head.
244
00:14:59.070 --> 00:15:02.730
That's not coming from your head. It's coming from your pocket.
245
00:15:03.289 --> 00:15:08.029
Oh, it's my phone, and it's Brains On producer Anna Goldfield. Hey, Anna,
246
00:15:08.070 --> 00:15:08.549
what's up?
247
00:15:08.750 --> 00:15:10.009
Hey, Molly, are you with Ellie?
248
00:15:10.509 --> 00:15:12.370
Uh-huh, yeah, Ellie's here with me, and we're talking about
249
00:15:12.429 --> 00:15:13.149
stringed instruments.
250
00:15:13.429 --> 00:15:13.649
Why?
251
00:15:13.669 --> 00:15:16.090
I'm feeding the instruments at the petting zoo. You want
252
00:15:16.110 --> 00:15:16.509
to come by?
253
00:15:16.789 --> 00:15:20.370
Feeding time? At the instrument petting zoo? Heck yeah, we'll
254
00:15:20.409 --> 00:15:21.889
be right there. Come on, Ellie.
255
00:15:22.889 --> 00:15:24.330
Brains, brains, brains.
256
00:15:26.049 --> 00:15:26.860
Here we are.
257
00:15:28.139 --> 00:15:31.649
Hey, Molly. Hi, Ellie. I'm so glad you're here. Hang on,
258
00:15:31.690 --> 00:15:34.769
just let me wash my hands. Feeding the trombones always
259
00:15:34.789 --> 00:15:35.529
gets so messy.
260
00:15:36.809 --> 00:15:37.210
That's better.
261
00:15:37.789 --> 00:15:39.549
Welcome to the Instrument Petting Zoo.
262
00:15:39.929 --> 00:15:43.950
It's just a room with lots and lots of instruments.
263
00:15:44.850 --> 00:15:46.330
Laying on the floor?
264
00:15:47.049 --> 00:15:53.990
Just instruments? These are my prized instrument herds. All free-range, well-trained,
265
00:15:54.129 --> 00:15:57.419
and totally pampered. And when the herd and I heard
266
00:15:57.460 --> 00:16:00.039
you were going to be talking about stringed instruments, I
267
00:16:00.080 --> 00:16:03.440
wanted to show them off. Anna's ukulele won first prize
268
00:16:03.580 --> 00:16:05.799
at the fair last year. See, it's got a blue
269
00:16:05.860 --> 00:16:06.429
ribbon on it.
270
00:16:06.700 --> 00:16:09.820
Wow. Ellie and I were just talking about how strings
271
00:16:09.919 --> 00:16:11.340
make sound waves in the air.
272
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:14.159
And how we hear the sound waves as notes. They
273
00:16:14.200 --> 00:16:18.470
can be higher or lower and louder or softer. But
274
00:16:18.789 --> 00:16:21.129
I still want to know why instruments sound different from
275
00:16:21.230 --> 00:16:21.649
one another.
276
00:16:22.110 --> 00:16:23.509
That's a fantastic question.
277
00:16:24.029 --> 00:16:26.669
Another one of my string theories is that it depends
278
00:16:26.809 --> 00:16:31.100
on what you feed your instruments. A well-fed instrument always
279
00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:34.659
sounds better, right, Anna? Only the best diets of healthy
280
00:16:34.700 --> 00:16:38.139
whole notes for my little orchestra. But really, it's all
281
00:16:38.179 --> 00:16:42.259
about how each instrument bounces those sound waves around. Instruments
282
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:45.389
have different shapes and are made of different things. All
283
00:16:45.429 --> 00:16:47.049
of that can change the sound they make.
284
00:16:47.690 --> 00:16:50.990
Yeah, my harp and your guitar are really different shapes
285
00:16:51.029 --> 00:16:54.639
and sizes. And they make really different sounds. Exactly.
286
00:16:55.059 --> 00:16:58.490
Here, let me show you with my acoustic guitar. Come here, baby.
287
00:16:59.809 --> 00:17:00.230
Yeah.
288
00:17:00.809 --> 00:17:04.049
So an acoustic guitar usually has six strings and a
289
00:17:04.109 --> 00:17:08.109
hollow body made out of wood. The strings start at
290
00:17:08.130 --> 00:17:10.210
the top of the neck. That's where you press down
291
00:17:10.269 --> 00:17:12.680
to make different notes. And at the other end of
292
00:17:12.720 --> 00:17:15.200
the guitar, the strings are stretched over a thin piece
293
00:17:15.240 --> 00:17:18.700
of wood called a bridge that helps pass vibrations into
294
00:17:18.740 --> 00:17:21.779
the guitar. You can pluck the strings and it sounds
295
00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:26.900
like this. Or you can strum them like this.
296
00:17:30.200 --> 00:17:31.869
And there's a hole right in the middle of the
297
00:17:31.910 --> 00:17:33.589
guitar underneath where you're strumming.
298
00:17:34.210 --> 00:17:37.809
Another one of my string theories is that strings make
299
00:17:37.950 --> 00:17:42.430
better sound waves if you complement them regularly. And also
300
00:17:42.539 --> 00:17:44.859
if the sound waves can bounce around a lot. And
301
00:17:44.940 --> 00:17:48.839
bouncing is exactly what's happening. When I play the strings...
302
00:17:48.980 --> 00:17:52.099
They vibrate throughout the guitar and through this round hole
303
00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:53.359
in the middle called the sound hole.
304
00:17:53.720 --> 00:17:56.529
And then they keep bouncing off the walls inside the guitar?
305
00:17:56.710 --> 00:17:59.769
Yeah, it's kind of like when you yell into a tunnel,
306
00:17:59.950 --> 00:18:04.329
you know? I love to yell! Your voice makes sound
307
00:18:04.349 --> 00:18:06.509
waves that bounce around the tunnel, and you hear the
308
00:18:06.589 --> 00:18:08.759
echoes all coming back on top of each other.
309
00:18:09.220 --> 00:18:11.660
So the inside of the guitar is like the inside
310
00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:13.640
of a tunnel, bouncing sound waves around.
311
00:18:14.140 --> 00:18:14.559
Yes, exactly.
312
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:17.160
And the sound waves come back out of the sound hole,
313
00:18:17.299 --> 00:18:20.059
making a bigger, rounder, and fuller sound than just the
314
00:18:20.119 --> 00:18:23.319
strings twanging on their own. The shape of an instrument
315
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:26.210
and the stuff it's made from can totally change how
316
00:18:26.250 --> 00:18:27.130
those strings sound.
317
00:18:27.509 --> 00:18:27.789
How?
318
00:18:28.230 --> 00:18:31.910
I'll show you. How about we play a little guessing game?
319
00:18:32.529 --> 00:18:35.349
I'll play three of my beautiful instrument buddies for you.
320
00:18:35.890 --> 00:18:37.990
You can try to figure out which instruments are making
321
00:18:38.009 --> 00:18:40.890
the sounds, and then I'll tell you how their shape
322
00:18:41.089 --> 00:18:44.390
and how they're made influences the sound. Molly and Ellie,
323
00:18:44.470 --> 00:18:49.220
are you ready? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, here's instrument number one.
324
00:18:49.240 --> 00:18:53.680
That was fun. What do you think, Ellie?
325
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:17.740
I think that was the sound of maybe a banjo.
326
00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:21.880
Oh, yeah. Kind of had that sound like someone strumming strings,
327
00:19:21.960 --> 00:19:24.289
kind of like a guitar. It sounded like between a
328
00:19:24.309 --> 00:19:25.569
guitar and a banjo.
329
00:19:25.809 --> 00:19:27.650
But not really a ukulele.
330
00:19:28.089 --> 00:19:29.569
Yeah, I agree. Okay.
331
00:19:30.009 --> 00:19:31.509
More of a country sound.
332
00:19:31.910 --> 00:19:35.009
More of a country sound. I'm going to go with
333
00:19:35.430 --> 00:19:39.130
a tiny guitar that's not a ukulele. Are we right?
334
00:19:39.549 --> 00:19:43.069
So you were right on the money with your thought
335
00:19:43.130 --> 00:19:46.049
that maybe it was kind of country because this instrument
336
00:19:46.130 --> 00:19:48.930
is used in country and bluegrass music a lot. That
337
00:19:48.970 --> 00:19:49.759
was a mandolin.
338
00:19:50.220 --> 00:19:51.579
What's a mandolin, Anna?
339
00:19:51.940 --> 00:19:53.400
I've never heard of it before.
340
00:19:53.900 --> 00:19:57.839
Well, a mandolin is an instrument that's around the same
341
00:19:57.920 --> 00:20:00.819
size as a violin. So you can hold it pretty
342
00:20:00.940 --> 00:20:04.470
easily in one hand. And the body of it is
343
00:20:04.529 --> 00:20:10.349
kind of a teardrop shape. And it's got... four notes
344
00:20:10.750 --> 00:20:13.170
like a violin it's tuned like a violin but each
345
00:20:13.309 --> 00:20:16.730
note is played by two strings so there are pairs
346
00:20:16.789 --> 00:20:19.990
of strings and it gives it that kind of full
347
00:20:20.509 --> 00:20:23.349
sound that nice round sound that you heard but it
348
00:20:23.390 --> 00:20:26.250
makes it really tricky to tune all.
349
00:20:26.150 --> 00:20:44.980
Right will you please show us instrument number two so Wow.
350
00:20:46.039 --> 00:20:48.549
That was deep. What do you think, Ellie?
351
00:20:49.369 --> 00:20:53.630
It sounded kind of like maybe like a cello.
352
00:20:55.430 --> 00:21:00.390
Good guess. I think it sounds even deeper than a cello.
353
00:21:02.259 --> 00:21:03.740
Is it a bass? What is it called? Is it
354
00:21:03.759 --> 00:21:07.220
a bass? Like the one that stands upright? Like a
355
00:21:07.259 --> 00:21:08.200
really big cello?
356
00:21:08.779 --> 00:21:09.039
Yeah.
357
00:21:09.660 --> 00:21:14.000
You nailed it. It is an upright bass. So those
358
00:21:14.059 --> 00:21:18.420
are some big, big, wide sound waves because the notes
359
00:21:18.460 --> 00:21:20.720
were so low. So I want you to picture a
360
00:21:21.089 --> 00:21:23.710
violin with that kind of figure eight shape and the
361
00:21:23.869 --> 00:21:27.210
F-shaped holes in the body and then the neck and
362
00:21:27.230 --> 00:21:29.390
the tuning pegs. And then I want you to imagine
363
00:21:29.410 --> 00:21:32.539
that that violin is six feet tall because that's how
364
00:21:32.599 --> 00:21:33.539
big a string bass is.
365
00:21:33.759 --> 00:21:34.400
Whoa.
366
00:21:34.779 --> 00:21:37.160
That's very tall for an instrument.
367
00:21:37.799 --> 00:21:38.119
All right.
368
00:21:38.700 --> 00:21:41.099
Are you ready for instrument number three?
369
00:21:41.619 --> 00:21:41.799
Yes.
370
00:21:41.839 --> 00:21:41.980
Yes.
371
00:22:00.140 --> 00:22:01.079
What do you think, Ellie?
372
00:22:01.619 --> 00:22:06.950
I hear guitar-y sounds, but then again, I also hear
373
00:22:07.089 --> 00:22:11.130
high-pitched buzzing like a trumpet. But I also hear metal clicking,
374
00:22:11.210 --> 00:22:12.049
so I don't really know.
375
00:22:12.589 --> 00:22:16.130
Yeah, those are really good observations. I think I have
376
00:22:16.170 --> 00:22:18.549
an idea what it is. Okay. Is this an instrument
377
00:22:18.589 --> 00:22:23.430
from India? It is. Tell us what it is.
378
00:22:23.839 --> 00:22:26.680
That was the sound of a sitar. The sitar is
379
00:22:26.720 --> 00:22:30.059
a plucked string instrument. It's related to a lute, and
380
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:32.619
it's about four feet long, and you play it sitting
381
00:22:32.640 --> 00:22:35.039
down with the body in your lap. The body is
382
00:22:35.519 --> 00:22:38.339
kind of a pear-shaped gourd, and it's got a long,
383
00:22:38.480 --> 00:22:41.369
wide neck. that you kind of hold up at an
384
00:22:41.569 --> 00:22:45.049
angle and play. And sitars can have between 18 and
385
00:22:45.049 --> 00:22:48.509
21 strings. And that's because some of the strings are
386
00:22:48.549 --> 00:22:52.529
for plucking and some lined up underneath the plucked strings
387
00:22:52.829 --> 00:22:56.430
are sympathetic. That doesn't mean they'll sit and listen to
388
00:22:56.470 --> 00:22:59.829
your problems. Sympathetic vibration is when a sound or other
389
00:22:59.849 --> 00:23:03.230
type of wave passes from one object to another. So
390
00:23:03.579 --> 00:23:06.759
When the sitar player plucks the top strings that are
391
00:23:06.839 --> 00:23:09.769
stretched over these high, curved wooden bridges that hold them
392
00:23:09.880 --> 00:23:12.460
up off the body of the instrument, the sound waves
393
00:23:12.720 --> 00:23:15.890
also travel to the strings underneath. And those vibrate a
394
00:23:15.910 --> 00:23:19.549
little bit. And that makes that twangy, echoey sound that
395
00:23:19.569 --> 00:23:19.910
you heard.
396
00:23:20.150 --> 00:23:22.109
That's so cool. That's amazing.
397
00:23:22.250 --> 00:23:24.769
Yeah, sitar's fun. Thank you both so much for playing
398
00:23:24.809 --> 00:23:25.109
with me.
399
00:23:25.349 --> 00:23:26.069
Thank you, Anna.
400
00:23:26.250 --> 00:23:29.289
That was so fun. And I think this proves my
401
00:23:29.470 --> 00:23:33.470
biggest string theory of all. Stringed instruments are wonderful because
402
00:23:33.509 --> 00:23:37.670
they make so many amazing sounds. What a breakthrough! Maybe
403
00:23:37.730 --> 00:23:40.049
now I can finally make the stringed cheese harp I've
404
00:23:40.089 --> 00:23:42.910
been dreaming of. Where's my notebook?
405
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:52.119
Stringed instruments push air into wiggly sound waves which travel
406
00:23:52.160 --> 00:23:52.779
to our ears.
407
00:23:53.279 --> 00:23:56.319
Loud sound waves are made up of big, wiggly waves,
408
00:23:56.680 --> 00:23:59.519
and soft sounds are made up of smaller, wiggly waves.
409
00:23:59.980 --> 00:24:02.460
The pitch of a sound is how high or.
410
00:24:02.640 --> 00:24:03.599
Low it is.
411
00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:06.809
And stringed instruments sound different from each other because of
412
00:24:06.869 --> 00:24:10.309
the different tools used to hit, pluck, or play them.
413
00:24:10.710 --> 00:24:12.769
Plus the size and shape of their bodies.
414
00:24:13.509 --> 00:24:16.069
That's it for this episode of Brains On.
415
00:24:16.470 --> 00:24:19.539
This episode was written by Anna Goldfield. It was produced
416
00:24:19.619 --> 00:24:22.900
by Molly Bloom and Rosie Dupont. Our editors are Sanan
417

418
00:24:26.869 --> 00:24:31.170
We had engineering help from Gary O'Keefe, Derek Ramirez, Lucien Lozon,
419
00:24:31.339 --> 00:24:34.359
and Bill Walker with sound design by Rachel Brees. Original
420
00:24:34.380 --> 00:24:37.880
theme music by Mark Sanchez. We had production help from

and questions.
433
00:25:12.619 --> 00:25:14.940
Speaking of mystery sounds, Ellie, are you ready to hear
434
00:25:14.980 --> 00:25:15.599
that sound again?
435
00:25:15.619 --> 00:25:15.690
Yep.
436
00:25:16.579 --> 00:25:16.779
Sweet.
437
00:25:34.500 --> 00:25:36.519
Nice. Okay, what do we think?
438
00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:40.910
I'm still sticking to my original guess. The die or
439
00:25:41.009 --> 00:25:45.430
the top rolling or spinning on top of a guitar
440
00:25:46.069 --> 00:25:46.589
or a table.
441
00:25:46.950 --> 00:25:48.829
I love that guess. I have no idea, so I'm
442
00:25:48.849 --> 00:25:52.190
going to stick to your guess too. Let's hear the answer.
443
00:25:52.210 --> 00:25:57.460
Hi, my name is Edgar from Akers, Georgia, and that
444
00:25:57.519 --> 00:26:00.119
was the sound of my top spinning.
445
00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:03.299
Oh my gosh, Ellie. You did it!
446
00:26:04.380 --> 00:26:05.019
You got it right.
447
00:26:05.579 --> 00:26:10.079
How does that feel? Great. Awesome. Have you spun tops before?
448
00:26:10.119 --> 00:26:13.720
You must have. Yes, I have. Can you spin your
449
00:26:13.740 --> 00:26:16.299
tops as long as Edgar can? Because that was pretty impressive, Edgar.
450
00:26:16.940 --> 00:26:17.140
No.
451
00:26:17.460 --> 00:26:20.839
The tables in my house have like cracks on them
452
00:26:21.039 --> 00:26:22.779
for the wood as a design.
453
00:26:22.859 --> 00:26:24.299
So they always get.
454
00:26:24.240 --> 00:26:25.940
Stuck on them. Okay.
455
00:26:25.960 --> 00:26:27.440
We need a better surface for you.
456
00:26:27.460 --> 00:26:28.240
Wow.
457
00:26:28.640 --> 00:26:49.329
Good guessing. Excellent ears. Now it's time for the Brain's
458
00:26:49.470 --> 00:26:51.990
Honor Roll. These are the incredible kids who keep this
459
00:26:52.009 --> 00:26:54.910
