OVER DEZE AFLEVERING
How can athletic directors make faster, safer and more confident weather decisions when lightning, extreme heat or winter storms threaten high school sporting events?
In this episode of the Bound for Greatness Podcast, host Scott Garvis talks with Jameson Allen of Flash Weather AI about how artificial intelligence and predictive weather technology are transforming safety in education-based athletics.
Athletic directors are regularly expected to make critical weather decisions without formal meteorological training. They must determine when to suspend practices, evacuate stadiums, postpone games, modify activities or safely allow student-athletes to return to competition. Every decision affects athletes, coaches, officials, spectators, transportation schedules and entire school communities.
Jameson explains how Flash Weather AI provides location-specific lightning predictions designed to identify potential threats before the first strike occurs. He also discusses wet-bulb globe temperature forecasting, heat illness prevention, multi-site weather monitoring and winter weather planning for schools.
Drawing from more than 120 conversations with high school athletic directors, Jameson reveals the pressure administrators experience when making public safety decisions with incomplete information. He shares why traditional weather apps can leave school leaders searching through multiple forecasts and how clearer, pre-interpreted information can help athletic departments move from reactive crisis management to proactive planning.
This conversation also explores the leadership principles behind effective emergency decision-making. Scott and Jameson discuss transparency, trust, communication, mentorship and the courage required to prioritize student-athlete safety when parents, coaches and spectators may disagree with the decision.
Listeners will learn how better weather forecasting can help schools:
• Improve lightning safety at athletic events
• Prepare practices for dangerous heat conditions
• Use WBGT forecasts to protect student-athletes
• Communicate weather decisions with greater confidence
• Develop proactive emergency action plans
• Reduce uncertainty across multiple athletic facilities
• Strengthen trust with coaches, families and communities
Technology cannot replace athletic leadership, but it can give leaders more time and better information when the stakes are highest.
This episode is essential listening for athletic directors, coaches, athletic trainers, school administrators, superintendents and anyone responsible for weather safety in high school sports.
