WEBVTT
00:01:17.716 --> 00:01:19.246
Welcome back to the Author's Edge.
00:01:19.246 --> 00:01:27.616
I am Allison Lane, and I am here for you because marketing is hard, even when you're a marketer.
00:01:28.186 --> 00:01:42.066
Today's guest proves that book events can be one of the most creative and community building and joy filled parts of launching your book or launching anything.
00:01:42.456 --> 00:01:42.846
Dr.
00:01:42.846 --> 00:01:48.076
Deb Miller is here and she is first of all, one of my clients and brilliant.
00:01:48.226 --> 00:01:52.336
And the author of Forget the Fairytale and Find Your Happiness.
00:01:52.366 --> 00:02:02.506
This is a memoir that flips the script on traditional princess narratives and challenges women to create their own version of Happily ever After.
00:02:02.956 --> 00:02:17.786
Now, Deb, when it came to launch your book, you knew as a career Fortune 100 marketer, you weren't going to settle for your standard book reading.
00:02:18.246 --> 00:02:23.286
What questions did you ask yourself since you knew you wanted to do something different?
00:02:24.036 --> 00:02:27.276
Yes, I definitely wanted to do something different.
00:02:27.306 --> 00:02:30.336
I did not want to have the traditional author event.
00:02:30.406 --> 00:02:32.476
The bookstore introduces you.
00:02:32.476 --> 00:02:34.426
You have an author reading.
00:02:34.781 --> 00:02:39.372
You may have an in conversation partner, another author that asks you questions.
00:02:39.372 --> 00:02:42.851
You have the obligatory Q and A that's very polite.
00:02:42.851 --> 00:02:44.562
And then people buy the book.
00:02:44.611 --> 00:02:46.861
My whole motto was just have fun with this thing.
00:02:47.382 --> 00:02:51.562
I wanted to entertain my audiences, I wanted to inspire them.
00:02:51.611 --> 00:02:52.601
So, what did I do?
00:02:52.601 --> 00:02:59.211
instead of the author reading, I had actresses perform two scenes at my initial book launch.
00:02:59.601 --> 00:03:06.896
I had my local high school actresses who had performed in their school play and they were fantastic.
00:03:06.896 --> 00:03:08.637
They were like right off Broadway.
00:03:09.056 --> 00:03:10.437
So that really brought it to life.
00:03:10.466 --> 00:03:16.016
If you don't want to go through all that trouble, you can just grab another person and do a dramatic reading.
00:03:16.086 --> 00:03:18.276
You don't have to just read it yourself though.
00:03:18.276 --> 00:03:22.747
Just really just changing it up a little bit can make it so much more interesting.
00:03:23.146 --> 00:03:32.057
The book just won an International Writers Association award and they're performing a scene from the book in San Diego in November.
00:03:32.466 --> 00:03:42.427
When we worked together you were absorbing so much and planning so much because we were using the methods I share in my bestseller launch school.
00:03:42.516 --> 00:03:56.646
And you took these strategies and turned your launch into these really creative community building experiences that are just continuing to involve and engage people
00:03:56.997 --> 00:03:57.596
exactly.
00:03:57.627 --> 00:04:01.046
I'm based in Seattle, so we're very big on craft beer.
00:04:01.076 --> 00:04:04.346
Everybody belongs to a local brewery in some fashion.
00:04:04.627 --> 00:04:05.541
I belong to a pub.
00:04:06.262 --> 00:04:11.601
And so, I had my pub day at the pub, but that's not very creative in and of itself.
00:04:11.601 --> 00:04:18.302
But what was cool is I gave a free beer to anybody who showed proof of purchase of buying the book.
00:04:18.331 --> 00:04:20.341
And of course, we could buy them on hand.
00:04:20.341 --> 00:04:24.572
And so, we were selling like hotcakes because who doesn't want something free?
00:04:24.601 --> 00:04:26.552
Everybody wants a free beer, right?
00:04:26.552 --> 00:04:33.122
So, these are people that weren't even part of the friends and family and neighbors that were joining the Pub Day celebration.
00:04:33.122 --> 00:04:36.812
You have to think about what kind of behavior you're trying to drive.
00:04:36.812 --> 00:04:39.421
So, I was trying to drive sales, nice little spike.
00:04:39.471 --> 00:04:43.401
Another one I did right around Pub Day was I donated to charity.
00:04:43.742 --> 00:04:46.831
Find a charity that's aligned with your book or your heart.
00:04:46.891 --> 00:04:51.632
And in my case, the pub was located right across the street from my granddaughter's preschool.
00:04:51.632 --> 00:05:01.427
So, I donated any cash sale,$5, because of course you're making a ton more profit if you're selling them for cash than if you do that through the publisher.
00:05:01.766 --> 00:05:05.276
So, it doesn't show up on your book sales, but it really helps the profit margin.
00:05:05.326 --> 00:05:15.791
Similarly, I belong to a sorority and there are a couple scenes in the book that are portrayed at the sorority Back in my day at Purdue University.
00:05:15.851 --> 00:05:30.932
And so, I donated a case of books to the sorority and they are selling them as holiday gifts to their sisters and their moms, I gave a talk at Pacific Northwest Writers Association to 150 memoirist.
00:05:31.322 --> 00:05:34.491
And it wasn't just here's how you write a memoir.
00:05:34.671 --> 00:05:39.711
It was a bold suggestion about let's rebrand the category.
00:05:40.132 --> 00:05:43.822
Memoirs sounds like your grandmother's trip to Europe.
00:05:44.096 --> 00:05:47.726
But people love a true story.
00:05:48.266 --> 00:05:54.086
We suggested the other panelists and I that we renamed the category, true story.
00:05:54.483 --> 00:06:11.998
So what I hear you saying is you did an inventory of the connections that you had in the community, your pub, your granddaughter's, preschool, your sorority, and a different way to bring memoirs together.
00:06:12.418 --> 00:06:23.235
You can make a list and not limit yourself based on how comfortable you feel about the outreach, because you don't know what's in their mind.
00:06:23.545 --> 00:06:28.205
They might think, gosh I'm so glad someone thought of us, because people don't normally.
00:06:28.625 --> 00:06:31.775
You usually get a yes when it's something new and interesting.
00:06:32.281 --> 00:06:36.060
Start where you are and use what you have.
00:06:36.675 --> 00:06:44.835
You were so helpful to me when I was putting together my strategy for the book launch, Allison, because you told me to mix it up.
00:06:44.835 --> 00:06:49.290
You were the one that said, don't just sit down and talk to another author.
00:06:49.290 --> 00:06:55.690
If not that, that isn't sometimes ideal, but in general, mix it up, Deb, is what you told me.
00:06:55.690 --> 00:07:02.840
And so, I leveraged my academic, I teach at Purdue University full circle moment online from Seattle.
00:07:02.840 --> 00:07:10.130
But I tapped into my academic ties and put together a happiness panel out here in Seattle.
00:07:10.400 --> 00:07:13.221
So I had a University of Washington, we call it UDub.
00:07:13.290 --> 00:07:17.430
Professor who teaches a course on happiness in the psychology department.
00:07:17.430 --> 00:07:22.276
She joined me and Ronit Plank, who has let's Talk memoir podcast.
00:07:22.306 --> 00:07:23.686
And she's phenomenal.
00:07:23.686 --> 00:07:25.276
She happens to be based in Seattle.
00:07:25.276 --> 00:07:27.646
And she teaches a course of memoir at UDub.
00:07:27.926 --> 00:07:38.406
There were a lot of men that were engaged in this and students that came from University of Washington, but I credit you for that because you got me thinking out of the box.
00:07:38.406 --> 00:07:41.346
The focus was not on the book at this book launch.
00:07:41.586 --> 00:07:55.567
It was all about the science of happiness When I went on book tour in the Midwest, I paired up with a couple professors from Indiana University and the gender studies program, and they have recommended the book to be reading for their students.
00:07:55.567 --> 00:07:57.681
So again, start where you are.
00:07:58.281 --> 00:07:59.692
Use what you have.
00:07:59.692 --> 00:08:01.581
another one would be book mail.
00:08:01.701 --> 00:08:07.431
For ARC readers, I didn't just send out, here's the arc and here's a little bookmark in there.
00:08:07.481 --> 00:08:09.391
I sent out, forget me, not seeds.
00:08:09.551 --> 00:08:12.192
Because the title has, forget the fairytale in it.
00:08:12.241 --> 00:08:15.811
And I got more comments from people on that, those seeds.
00:08:15.811 --> 00:08:17.041
Unexpected.
00:08:17.132 --> 00:08:18.541
Memorable.
00:08:19.081 --> 00:08:25.411
A keepsake as well, because if someone's going to plant forget me not, they're going to think of you every time they bloom.
00:08:25.858 --> 00:08:33.759
You hadn't seen that done for a book launch, you took something that maybe you had seen somewhere else and you applied it to your book.
00:08:34.158 --> 00:08:35.749
And that's what a good marketer does.
00:08:35.749 --> 00:08:39.678
Don't look around to what other people are doing right next to you.
00:08:39.678 --> 00:08:41.629
Look at what works somewhere else.
00:08:42.221 --> 00:08:45.797
I want to just back up about these really interesting events.
00:08:46.096 --> 00:08:55.147
A book launch event is usually about why the book is important or why someone should read the book.
00:08:55.177 --> 00:08:58.177
And that's not a way to fill a room.
00:08:58.956 --> 00:09:05.302
It's a way to get people who already know about the book and like the book to be in the room.
00:09:05.542 --> 00:09:10.312
But even then, usually about 10% of the people in the room have read the book.
00:09:10.402 --> 00:09:11.062
10%.
00:09:11.241 --> 00:09:20.302
And somehow authors miss that what they should be talking about are why the themes in the book are important.
00:09:20.302 --> 00:09:27.527
So, you took that bigger theme of happiness and you made that the discussion point.
00:09:28.126 --> 00:09:28.937
Exactly.
00:09:28.996 --> 00:09:35.716
The book is about my journey of transformation from damsel in Distress to Warrior Princess.
00:09:35.807 --> 00:09:46.817
And I actually use the Disney princesses to kick off some cultural commentary The outcome of it that you helped me see was really getting back to what's the benefit to other people.
00:09:47.147 --> 00:09:53.237
And it is about inspiring them to redefine their own happiness, their own happily ever after.
00:09:53.237 --> 00:09:58.667
And so, happiness has taken over, but it was not the original plan.
00:09:59.057 --> 00:10:02.297
It's been a wonderful outcome, so thank you for that.
00:10:02.397 --> 00:10:02.877
Listen.
00:10:03.096 --> 00:10:14.047
The thing about memoir, and you know this is when you're writing it, you're writing a novel about yourself or what happened to you during a specific time.
00:10:14.317 --> 00:10:18.877
But the person who reads it, unless you're a celebrity, they don't care what happened to you.
00:10:19.667 --> 00:10:31.206
Your story is really a delivery of an experience through them watching themselves inhabit your body'cause that's what we do when we read.
00:10:31.511 --> 00:10:36.071
We feel like we are the protagonist and we are there with you.
00:10:36.100 --> 00:10:39.870
So, they're reading about themselves, finding happiness
00:10:39.870 --> 00:10:43.471
Instead of waiting for Prince Charming to come and save the day.
00:10:43.971 --> 00:10:45.711
It's about finding yourself.
00:10:46.384 --> 00:10:48.663
And that that pursuit.
00:10:49.084 --> 00:10:51.514
That is really a life pursuit.
00:10:51.894 --> 00:10:58.224
That's what makes these conversations interesting to so many different types of people.
00:10:58.261 --> 00:11:03.271
what also is interesting to me about Your events they're so photogenic.
00:11:03.781 --> 00:11:07.480
Because you've got actors, mid scene.
00:11:07.641 --> 00:11:12.701
You're capturing a moment at a pub You're capturing these moments.
00:11:12.751 --> 00:11:15.511
that's your marketing asset for the next five years.
00:11:15.671 --> 00:11:18.341
And there are specific shots you need to get.
00:11:18.610 --> 00:11:20.350
In fact, I keep a checklist.
00:11:20.350 --> 00:11:34.661
You can go to my website, lane lit.com/checklist two and get my ultimate event photo checklist that whether it's your event or you are attending someone's event.
00:11:35.605 --> 00:11:38.156
Photos that you should get, there's a checklist.
00:11:38.256 --> 00:11:41.316
Choose three and just grab them because you will definitely use them.
00:11:41.355 --> 00:11:43.966
No, you reminded me to do that upfront.
00:11:44.038 --> 00:11:50.639
I tried to follow the Allison formula for that, and I think it has paid off, especially on the social media side.
00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:52.918
And I do have a whole inventory of things to use.
00:11:53.278 --> 00:11:55.949
I wanted to touch upon what some other authors are doing.
00:11:55.949 --> 00:12:03.389
One of my friends wrote a book about sailing to Tahiti with her dad and sisters when she was age 14, and that's the name of the book, 14.
00:12:03.479 --> 00:12:04.619
Leslie Johansson Neck.
00:12:05.059 --> 00:12:10.639
While her book was about coming of age story, it was actually she tied into yacht clubs.
00:12:10.668 --> 00:12:15.709
And I think she went to more than a hundred yacht clubs up and down the Pacific Coast over here.
00:12:16.049 --> 00:12:26.429
So, the point is to think outside the box as you always encourage your authors to do, and getting eyes on your book in ways that you never would've imagined.
00:12:26.679 --> 00:12:29.679
I leveraged my students at Washington State University.
00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:32.229
I also teach an MBA marketing class there.
00:12:32.859 --> 00:12:33.579
Of course you do.
00:12:33.788 --> 00:12:34.269
They gave
00:12:34.269 --> 00:12:35.859
me six interns.
00:12:35.889 --> 00:12:38.259
They gave me two last, a year ago in the fall.
00:12:38.259 --> 00:12:40.329
They gave me two in the winter and two in the spring.
00:12:40.329 --> 00:12:42.459
And they did things like create my book trailers.
00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:45.309
They got me going on social media.
00:12:45.549 --> 00:12:46.009
Wow.
00:12:46.009 --> 00:12:47.479
Library outreach.
00:12:47.479 --> 00:12:53.239
So, again, like tap into whatever resources you might have.
00:12:53.629 --> 00:13:04.254
People don't think of themselves as marketing people because they're an author or they're a psychotherapist, or they're a professor of ethics.
00:13:04.524 --> 00:13:07.644
They're not thinking, how do I get this out there?
00:13:07.644 --> 00:13:15.954
But if you're not a marketing person, you probably aren't going to come up with these ideas in a brainstorm of one by yourself.
00:13:16.283 --> 00:13:21.069
It helps to be around other people who can say, oh, I have to go.
00:13:21.069 --> 00:13:23.649
I'm going to be traveling because I'm going to Cannes.
00:13:23.969 --> 00:13:24.538
What?
00:13:25.104 --> 00:13:26.424
Why didn't we talk about that?
00:13:26.454 --> 00:13:27.774
Oh I've been asked to be on a panel.
00:13:27.804 --> 00:13:30.804
What, Deb, you have to tell me these things.
00:13:31.074 --> 00:13:38.214
That is crazy that we overlook the thing that we think is separate.
00:13:38.754 --> 00:13:41.153
But it's not separate because you are one person.
00:13:41.754 --> 00:13:42.324
That's right.
00:13:42.324 --> 00:13:43.644
I'm surprised you remember that.
00:13:43.694 --> 00:13:46.364
This happens with every single person I work with.
00:13:46.783 --> 00:13:52.374
Oh, I didn't think that mattered because that was before, or I'm not doing that anymore.
00:13:52.424 --> 00:14:00.974
No, you were a major magazine editor of a women's magazine and now you do something else.
00:14:00.974 --> 00:14:02.624
But you did that for 25 years.
00:14:02.653 --> 00:14:02.894
Yeah.
00:14:02.894 --> 00:14:03.538
We're going to talk about it.
00:14:03.889 --> 00:14:12.146
The skill and the expertise comes with you, and sometimes you get opportunities because you're so different and It's easy to overlook those things.
00:14:12.276 --> 00:14:20.485
So, we're not thinking of these things that we have the ruby slippers that you're not even aware of that could help you launch your book.
00:14:20.485 --> 00:14:30.566
So, back to your point about staying aligned with what you know, but thinking outside of the box about how can that low key tie in with your book.
00:14:30.776 --> 00:14:32.186
I think that's great advice.
00:14:32.696 --> 00:14:37.961
It's really a conversation about reinvention and identity.
00:14:38.591 --> 00:14:54.011
Because you've reinvented yourself multiple times to global marketing leader to professor and now author and your book has already won more than several awards and continues to gain momentum.
00:14:54.041 --> 00:15:04.179
So, when authors need to draw on their past experience to elevate their book's opportunity, but also their opportunity.
00:15:04.599 --> 00:15:06.609
What can they do?
00:15:07.059 --> 00:15:12.129
What would you tell someone to do today so that they're not starting from zero?
00:15:12.729 --> 00:15:19.894
Number one, have you shake them up a little bit because you give tough love in your one-on-ones, which is what I benefited from.
00:15:20.403 --> 00:15:25.744
But I think they need to hold up the mirror and see what their strengths are.
00:15:26.644 --> 00:15:39.834
What they enjoy, because I would encourage everyone to have fun with this book launch It's whatever brings you joy and because this should be a fun process and it has been for me.
00:15:39.834 --> 00:15:44.783
It has been such a joy ride and I don't think it is for everyone.
00:15:44.793 --> 00:15:47.163
You have to take charge of your book launch.
00:15:47.163 --> 00:15:49.384
You have to take charge of your happiness.
00:15:49.984 --> 00:15:50.403
You do.
00:15:50.403 --> 00:15:54.033
You have to be in your own marketing director.
00:15:54.064 --> 00:16:01.038
I think what I see you doing though is that you are enjoying the whole ride.
00:16:01.099 --> 00:16:06.799
But a lot of people think of the book launch as one event.
00:16:07.309 --> 00:16:10.849
And then it's over, and then they think of it like a memory, like a birthday party.
00:16:11.359 --> 00:16:12.739
And it's not.
00:16:12.788 --> 00:16:17.799
The baby is born, but now it's it's every day, it's out there.
00:16:17.889 --> 00:16:23.619
And so, if you stop talking about it, no one's going to know about it.
00:16:24.099 --> 00:16:34.359
You have to keep talking about it and integrate the events about your book or about your opportunities into your life.
00:16:34.449 --> 00:16:36.519
And when you do that, it brings you joy.
00:16:36.939 --> 00:16:42.189
But if you look at it as an uphill climb, it's going to feel sweaty and painful.
00:16:42.469 --> 00:16:43.459
Something you said.
00:16:43.969 --> 00:16:48.579
Gave me an idea I mentioned I had these students, these interns, that helped me out.
00:16:48.908 --> 00:16:50.259
It actually helped them out.
00:16:50.349 --> 00:16:52.089
It helped them out for their resumes.
00:16:52.089 --> 00:16:54.278
It helped them complete their degree requirement.
00:16:54.278 --> 00:17:00.889
They had to have an unpaid real world marketing experience before they can receive their degree.
00:17:00.889 --> 00:17:02.658
So, I was helping them fulfill that.
00:17:02.658 --> 00:17:08.118
But the point is that these things have legs and that's what you were reminding me of.
00:17:08.453 --> 00:17:14.903
So I did this with the students, but now Washington State put it did an article.
00:17:14.933 --> 00:17:18.743
It was written in the summer, but it just got sent out to all of their alumni.
00:17:18.814 --> 00:17:25.828
Obviously to encourage them if their business owners or to participate to have interns for this program as well.
00:17:26.009 --> 00:17:28.558
So, that's a great benefit for future students.
00:17:28.828 --> 00:17:32.578
But it highlighted these six students and my book, oh, and by the way.
00:17:32.939 --> 00:17:36.568
And then they posted it on LinkedIn back to that.
00:17:36.848 --> 00:17:41.499
So, who would think that this one little intern thing would keep having these legs?
00:17:41.578 --> 00:17:55.128
I want to talk about the difference between pitching an article of, Hey local author gets team of interns to help with book launch.
00:17:55.278 --> 00:18:06.769
That is not news because it gives nothing, no opportunity to the reader or local businesses, but local universities.
00:18:07.368 --> 00:18:16.668
Intern program is serving businesses in the community, and here's an example of one very newsworthy.
00:18:17.449 --> 00:18:20.028
Same benefit to you.
00:18:20.989 --> 00:18:36.889
In fact, a bigger benefit because more people will share the thing that has an opportunity for others instead of just wasn't Deb Miller's singular experience working with interns interesting?
00:18:37.098 --> 00:18:40.699
No, it's not because people are looking for what can I do?
00:18:41.459 --> 00:18:51.489
That reminds me back at that happiness panel with the University of Washington, a couple authors asked me after that event, they was saying, this is like the best event I've ever been to.
00:18:51.489 --> 00:18:54.994
But did you feel bad, Deb, that the focus wasn't really about your book?
00:18:55.594 --> 00:19:01.963
And I said, no, you just told me like this was one of the best or the best event you've ever been to.
00:19:02.384 --> 00:19:05.914
And you could tell by the buzz in the room other people were feeling the same.
00:19:05.914 --> 00:19:08.345
And I had so many people tell me that afterwards.
00:19:08.825 --> 00:19:16.505
I was like a proud parent watching these other two talk about the science of happiness and the storytelling behind it.
00:19:16.555 --> 00:19:22.654
It just seems like one of the tennents of your activities is community building.
00:19:22.715 --> 00:19:24.845
And maybe that was a byproduct.
00:19:25.235 --> 00:19:35.454
But having people come and that there's a buzz and talking to each other, not just to you or not just about you is engaging.
00:19:35.985 --> 00:19:44.715
When people get the opportunity to come together they can walk away with understanding themselves and each other in a deeper way.
00:19:45.434 --> 00:19:48.884
Most bookstores don't have the room to host an event.
00:19:49.634 --> 00:19:56.954
And it is excruciatingly expensive for bookstores to stay open to host your event.
00:19:57.690 --> 00:20:02.970
And they hope that you do the marketing, but they have room for maybe 20 people.
00:20:03.269 --> 00:20:08.539
But when you have your event at a pub, or a yacht club or Dr.
00:20:08.539 --> 00:20:21.230
Mimi Zieman had her book launch at an REI because when she climbed Everest, she took gear from REI and they were more than delighted to host her book launch event.
00:20:21.350 --> 00:20:23.420
And it was packed.
00:20:23.640 --> 00:20:25.110
There had to be a hundred people there.
00:20:25.230 --> 00:20:26.759
The photos tell the story.
00:20:27.360 --> 00:20:38.940
You are giving people more and you can make a list from just this conversation about all the types of places.
00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:41.809
Even like a sorority conference.
00:20:41.809 --> 00:20:49.275
Sororities get together every year to have a leadership conference or women's leadership.
00:20:49.325 --> 00:20:54.130
That way people also don't feel like they're going to get pitch slapped and please buy the book.
00:20:54.730 --> 00:20:57.490
No one wants to be sold at.
00:20:57.819 --> 00:20:59.470
They want to be invited.
00:20:59.470 --> 00:21:01.360
They want to feel part of something.
00:21:01.660 --> 00:21:04.210
And that is good marketing.
00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:09.329
And it also makes you feel like you are part of something too.
00:21:09.329 --> 00:21:11.460
You're not there to shill.
00:21:12.009 --> 00:21:12.370
You can
00:21:12.370 --> 00:21:18.890
give away the book at, if you buy a couple cases of your own book, it's only,$4 each or something.
00:21:18.890 --> 00:21:24.440
But you can give that away and put a little reminder in, please leave a review or whatever.
00:21:24.500 --> 00:21:27.740
If that's the behavior that you're trying to drive.
00:21:28.009 --> 00:21:38.329
But then you've got this ready audience of a hundred women at a luncheon that get this book, that get all excited about it'cause they're getting something for free and you get paid 2,500 just speak to the group.
00:21:38.750 --> 00:21:42.410
So, yes, it makes sense sometimes to just give away your book.
00:21:43.069 --> 00:21:43.549
Right.
00:21:43.850 --> 00:21:56.732
Because people love something that they can take away and that offers them an opportunity to feel like they live that adventure because they're always seeing it through their own experience.
00:21:56.833 --> 00:22:01.363
So, for me, next steps would be targeting women's empowerment groups.
00:22:01.413 --> 00:22:01.893
Yeah.
00:22:02.492 --> 00:22:21.168
Deb, before we call this podcast complete, what is one step you want authors to take today who need to design their marketing efforts so that they feel fresh and full of purpose and true to themselves?
00:22:21.948 --> 00:22:25.307
I think first of all, you need to be clear on what is your goal.
00:22:25.758 --> 00:22:28.008
Is your goal to sell books?
00:22:28.087 --> 00:22:36.278
Is your goal instead to build a business of which the books is just one piece of it And I think you need to know your customer.
00:22:36.278 --> 00:22:39.817
These are classic things that you and I did in the corporate world, right?
00:22:39.918 --> 00:22:44.567
But I think they apply to the whole book marketing piece.
00:22:44.688 --> 00:22:49.877
I will guarantee you that you will find happiness and you will have a successful book launch.
00:22:49.877 --> 00:22:52.337
And the other thing you really need to tie in with Allison.
00:22:52.337 --> 00:22:56.268
I'm not just saying this, I was recommending just somebody just last week.
00:22:57.117 --> 00:22:59.886
because you're overwhelmed at first when you're doing all this bookmarking.
00:22:59.886 --> 00:23:00.937
And there are just so many things.
00:23:00.937 --> 00:23:02.467
I wish I'd found you sooner.
00:23:02.467 --> 00:23:14.317
Because even though I am 20 years as vice president of corporate marketing communication for Fortune 500 companies, I still needed you to help me get my head on straight.
00:23:14.366 --> 00:23:16.917
You help me get back to the basics.
00:23:17.211 --> 00:23:20.481
And learn that what I did know from marketing could apply.
00:23:21.382 --> 00:23:39.184
Thank you Deb, so much for all of your words of wisdom and sharing all of the challenges too that go into this'cause you really are living this experience and holding up the measure of success is happiness.
00:23:39.275 --> 00:23:40.865
Are you enjoying this?
00:23:41.105 --> 00:23:43.055
If you're not enjoying your book launch?
00:23:43.085 --> 00:23:50.730
If it feels like a sweaty mess full of angst and anxiety, then that's going to come across too.
00:23:50.730 --> 00:24:00.480
Nobody's going to want your anxious book, no matter how important it is that it sell, or how important it is that they get the message that's in the book.
00:24:00.480 --> 00:24:03.960
They can't get the message unless it's from you'cause the book can't speak.
00:24:04.410 --> 00:24:07.759
The book can't invite people to events and build engagement.
00:24:07.880 --> 00:24:09.259
Only you can.
00:24:09.610 --> 00:24:14.340
If you can forget what everybody else is doing or what the neighbor did, or the other author.
00:24:14.809 --> 00:24:22.340
Then, you can free yourself to go find your own happy book launch that is tailored just for you.
00:24:22.690 --> 00:24:24.840
I can't even follow that up with anything.
00:24:24.840 --> 00:24:27.420
That was amazing, Deb, thank you so much.
00:24:27.779 --> 00:24:31.529
And for you out there thinking maybe it is time to write my book.
00:24:31.650 --> 00:24:32.430
Yes, it is.
00:24:32.460 --> 00:24:33.269
Stop waiting.
00:24:33.329 --> 00:24:34.769
No one's going to do it for you.
00:24:35.250 --> 00:24:40.079
Your story, your message, your insight, it's needed in the world.
00:24:40.170 --> 00:24:44.610
And the only thing that happens if you wait is more time passes.
00:24:45.150 --> 00:24:49.259
And the person who needs your genius doesn't get it.
00:24:49.860 --> 00:24:55.319
They're still sitting, waiting, and they're hollering, hoping that you will hear their call.
00:24:55.470 --> 00:24:57.990
So, it's time to act.
00:24:57.990 --> 00:24:58.710
Get on it.
00:24:59.440 --> 00:25:02.140
If you need support, you know I'm here.
00:25:02.190 --> 00:25:08.130
At lane lit.com/ Allison, and you can find me right away.
00:25:08.130 --> 00:25:11.160
You can book a call with me and we can talk.
00:25:11.910 --> 00:25:12.779
Easy sneezy.
00:01:17.716 --> 00:01:19.246
Welcome back to the Author's Edge.
00:01:19.246 --> 00:01:27.616
I am Allison Lane, and I am here for you because marketing is hard, even when you're a marketer.
00:01:28.186 --> 00:01:42.066
Today's guest proves that book events can be one of the most creative and community building and joy filled parts of launching your book or launching anything.
00:01:42.456 --> 00:01:42.846
Dr.
00:01:42.846 --> 00:01:48.076
Deb Miller is here and she is first of all, one of my clients and brilliant.
00:01:48.226 --> 00:01:52.336
And the author of Forget the Fairytale and Find Your Happiness.
00:01:52.366 --> 00:02:02.506
This is a memoir that flips the script on traditional princess narratives and challenges women to create their own version of Happily ever After.
00:02:02.956 --> 00:02:17.786
Now, Deb, when it came to launch your book, you knew as a career Fortune 100 marketer, you weren't going to settle for your standard book reading.
00:02:18.246 --> 00:02:23.286
What questions did you ask yourself since you knew you wanted to do something different?
00:02:24.036 --> 00:02:27.276
Yes, I definitely wanted to do something different.
00:02:27.306 --> 00:02:30.336
I did not want to have the traditional author event.
00:02:30.406 --> 00:02:32.476
The bookstore introduces you.
00:02:32.476 --> 00:02:34.426
You have an author reading.
00:02:34.781 --> 00:02:39.372
You may have an in conversation partner, another author that asks you questions.
00:02:39.372 --> 00:02:42.851
You have the obligatory Q and A that's very polite.
00:02:42.851 --> 00:02:44.562
And then people buy the book.
00:02:44.611 --> 00:02:46.861
My whole motto was just have fun with this thing.
00:02:47.382 --> 00:02:51.562
I wanted to entertain my audiences, I wanted to inspire them.
00:02:51.611 --> 00:02:52.601
So, what did I do?
00:02:52.601 --> 00:02:59.211
instead of the author reading, I had actresses perform two scenes at my initial book launch.
00:02:59.601 --> 00:03:06.896
I had my local high school actresses who had performed in their school play and they were fantastic.
00:03:06.896 --> 00:03:08.637
They were like right off Broadway.
00:03:09.056 --> 00:03:10.437
So that really brought it to life.
00:03:10.466 --> 00:03:16.016
If you don't want to go through all that trouble, you can just grab another person and do a dramatic reading.
00:03:16.086 --> 00:03:18.276
You don't have to just read it yourself though.
00:03:18.276 --> 00:03:22.747
Just really just changing it up a little bit can make it so much more interesting.
00:03:23.146 --> 00:03:32.057
The book just won an International Writers Association award and they're performing a scene from the book in San Diego in November.
00:03:32.466 --> 00:03:42.427
When we worked together you were absorbing so much and planning so much because we were using the methods I share in my bestseller launch school.
00:03:42.516 --> 00:03:56.646
And you took these strategies and turned your launch into these really creative community building experiences that are just continuing to involve and engage people
00:03:56.997 --> 00:03:57.596
exactly.
00:03:57.627 --> 00:04:01.046
I'm based in Seattle, so we're very big on craft beer.
00:04:01.076 --> 00:04:04.346
Everybody belongs to a local brewery in some fashion.
00:04:04.627 --> 00:04:05.541
I belong to a pub.
00:04:06.262 --> 00:04:11.601
And so, I had my pub day at the pub, but that's not very creative in and of itself.
00:04:11.601 --> 00:04:18.302
But what was cool is I gave a free beer to anybody who showed proof of purchase of buying the book.
00:04:18.331 --> 00:04:20.341
And of course, we could buy them on hand.
00:04:20.341 --> 00:04:24.572
And so, we were selling like hotcakes because who doesn't want something free?
00:04:24.601 --> 00:04:26.552
Everybody wants a free beer, right?
00:04:26.552 --> 00:04:33.122
So, these are people that weren't even part of the friends and family and neighbors that were joining the Pub Day celebration.
00:04:33.122 --> 00:04:36.812
You have to think about what kind of behavior you're trying to drive.
00:04:36.812 --> 00:04:39.421
So, I was trying to drive sales, nice little spike.
00:04:39.471 --> 00:04:43.401
Another one I did right around Pub Day was I donated to charity.
00:04:43.742 --> 00:04:46.831
Find a charity that's aligned with your book or your heart.
00:04:46.891 --> 00:04:51.632
And in my case, the pub was located right across the street from my granddaughter's preschool.
00:04:51.632 --> 00:05:01.427
So, I donated any cash sale,$5, because of course you're making a ton more profit if you're selling them for cash than if you do that through the publisher.
00:05:01.766 --> 00:05:05.276
So, it doesn't show up on your book sales, but it really helps the profit margin.
00:05:05.326 --> 00:05:15.791
Similarly, I belong to a sorority and there are a couple scenes in the book that are portrayed at the sorority Back in my day at Purdue University.
00:05:15.851 --> 00:05:30.932
And so, I donated a case of books to the sorority and they are selling them as holiday gifts to their sisters and their moms, I gave a talk at Pacific Northwest Writers Association to 150 memoirist.
00:05:31.322 --> 00:05:34.491
And it wasn't just here's how you write a memoir.
00:05:34.671 --> 00:05:39.711
It was a bold suggestion about let's rebrand the category.
00:05:40.132 --> 00:05:43.822
Memoirs sounds like your grandmother's trip to Europe.
00:05:44.096 --> 00:05:47.726
But people love a true story.
00:05:48.266 --> 00:05:54.086
We suggested the other panelists and I that we renamed the category, true story.
00:05:54.483 --> 00:06:11.998
So what I hear you saying is you did an inventory of the connections that you had in the community, your pub, your granddaughter's, preschool, your sorority, and a different way to bring memoirs together.
00:06:12.418 --> 00:06:23.235
You can make a list and not limit yourself based on how comfortable you feel about the outreach, because you don't know what's in their mind.
00:06:23.545 --> 00:06:28.205
They might think, gosh I'm so glad someone thought of us, because people don't normally.
00:06:28.625 --> 00:06:31.775
You usually get a yes when it's something new and interesting.
00:06:32.281 --> 00:06:36.060
Start where you are and use what you have.
00:06:36.675 --> 00:06:44.835
You were so helpful to me when I was putting together my strategy for the book launch, Allison, because you told me to mix it up.
00:06:44.835 --> 00:06:49.290
You were the one that said, don't just sit down and talk to another author.
00:06:49.290 --> 00:06:55.690
If not that, that isn't sometimes ideal, but in general, mix it up, Deb, is what you told me.
00:06:55.690 --> 00:07:02.840
And so, I leveraged my academic, I teach at Purdue University full circle moment online from Seattle.
00:07:02.840 --> 00:07:10.130
But I tapped into my academic ties and put together a happiness panel out here in Seattle.
00:07:10.400 --> 00:07:13.221
So I had a University of Washington, we call it UDub.
00:07:13.290 --> 00:07:17.430
Professor who teaches a course on happiness in the psychology department.
00:07:17.430 --> 00:07:22.276
She joined me and Ronit Plank, who has let's Talk memoir podcast.
00:07:22.306 --> 00:07:23.686
And she's phenomenal.
00:07:23.686 --> 00:07:25.276
She happens to be based in Seattle.
00:07:25.276 --> 00:07:27.646
And she teaches a course of memoir at UDub.
00:07:27.926 --> 00:07:38.406
There were a lot of men that were engaged in this and students that came from University of Washington, but I credit you for that because you got me thinking out of the box.
00:07:38.406 --> 00:07:41.346
The focus was not on the book at this book launch.
00:07:41.586 --> 00:07:55.567
It was all about the science of happiness When I went on book tour in the Midwest, I paired up with a couple professors from Indiana University and the gender studies program, and they have recommended the book to be reading for their students.
00:07:55.567 --> 00:07:57.681
So again, start where you are.
00:07:58.281 --> 00:07:59.692
Use what you have.
00:07:59.692 --> 00:08:01.581
another one would be book mail.
00:08:01.701 --> 00:08:07.431
For ARC readers, I didn't just send out, here's the arc and here's a little bookmark in there.
00:08:07.481 --> 00:08:09.391
I sent out, forget me, not seeds.
00:08:09.551 --> 00:08:12.192
Because the title has, forget the fairytale in it.
00:08:12.241 --> 00:08:15.811
And I got more comments from people on that, those seeds.
00:08:15.811 --> 00:08:17.041
Unexpected.
00:08:17.132 --> 00:08:18.541
Memorable.
00:08:19.081 --> 00:08:25.411
A keepsake as well, because if someone's going to plant forget me not, they're going to think of you every time they bloom.
00:08:25.858 --> 00:08:33.759
You hadn't seen that done for a book launch, you took something that maybe you had seen somewhere else and you applied it to your book.
00:08:34.158 --> 00:08:35.749
And that's what a good marketer does.
00:08:35.749 --> 00:08:39.678
Don't look around to what other people are doing right next to you.
00:08:39.678 --> 00:08:41.629
Look at what works somewhere else.
00:08:42.221 --> 00:08:45.797
I want to just back up about these really interesting events.
00:08:46.096 --> 00:08:55.147
A book launch event is usually about why the book is important or why someone should read the book.
00:08:55.177 --> 00:08:58.177
And that's not a way to fill a room.
00:08:58.956 --> 00:09:05.302
It's a way to get people who already know about the book and like the book to be in the room.
00:09:05.542 --> 00:09:10.312
But even then, usually about 10% of the people in the room have read the book.
00:09:10.402 --> 00:09:11.062
10%.
00:09:11.241 --> 00:09:20.302
And somehow authors miss that what they should be talking about are why the themes in the book are important.
00:09:20.302 --> 00:09:27.527
So, you took that bigger theme of happiness and you made that the discussion point.
00:09:28.126 --> 00:09:28.937
Exactly.
00:09:28.996 --> 00:09:35.716
The book is about my journey of transformation from damsel in Distress to Warrior Princess.
00:09:35.807 --> 00:09:46.817
And I actually use the Disney princesses to kick off some cultural commentary The outcome of it that you helped me see was really getting back to what's the benefit to other people.
00:09:47.147 --> 00:09:53.237
And it is about inspiring them to redefine their own happiness, their own happily ever after.
00:09:53.237 --> 00:09:58.667
And so, happiness has taken over, but it was not the original plan.
00:09:59.057 --> 00:10:02.297
It's been a wonderful outcome, so thank you for that.
00:10:02.397 --> 00:10:02.877
Listen.
00:10:03.096 --> 00:10:14.047
The thing about memoir, and you know this is when you're writing it, you're writing a novel about yourself or what happened to you during a specific time.
00:10:14.317 --> 00:10:18.877
But the person who reads it, unless you're a celebrity, they don't care what happened to you.
00:10:19.667 --> 00:10:31.206
Your story is really a delivery of an experience through them watching themselves inhabit your body'cause that's what we do when we read.
00:10:31.511 --> 00:10:36.071
We feel like we are the protagonist and we are there with you.
00:10:36.100 --> 00:10:39.870
So, they're reading about themselves, finding happiness
00:10:39.870 --> 00:10:43.471
Instead of waiting for Prince Charming to come and save the day.
00:10:43.971 --> 00:10:45.711
It's about finding yourself.
00:10:46.384 --> 00:10:48.663
And that that pursuit.
00:10:49.084 --> 00:10:51.514
That is really a life pursuit.
00:10:51.894 --> 00:10:58.224
That's what makes these conversations interesting to so many different types of people.
00:10:58.261 --> 00:11:03.271
what also is interesting to me about Your events they're so photogenic.
00:11:03.781 --> 00:11:07.480
Because you've got actors, mid scene.
00:11:07.641 --> 00:11:12.701
You're capturing a moment at a pub You're capturing these moments.
00:11:12.751 --> 00:11:15.511
that's your marketing asset for the next five years.
00:11:15.671 --> 00:11:18.341
And there are specific shots you need to get.
00:11:18.610 --> 00:11:20.350
In fact, I keep a checklist.
00:11:20.350 --> 00:11:34.661
You can go to my website, lane lit.com/checklist two and get my ultimate event photo checklist that whether it's your event or you are attending someone's event.
00:11:35.605 --> 00:11:38.156
Photos that you should get, there's a checklist.
00:11:38.256 --> 00:11:41.316
Choose three and just grab them because you will definitely use them.
00:11:41.355 --> 00:11:43.966
No, you reminded me to do that upfront.
00:11:44.038 --> 00:11:50.639
I tried to follow the Allison formula for that, and I think it has paid off, especially on the social media side.
00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:52.918
And I do have a whole inventory of things to use.
00:11:53.278 --> 00:11:55.949
I wanted to touch upon what some other authors are doing.
00:11:55.949 --> 00:12:03.389
One of my friends wrote a book about sailing to Tahiti with her dad and sisters when she was age 14, and that's the name of the book, 14.
00:12:03.479 --> 00:12:04.619
Leslie Johansson Neck.
00:12:05.059 --> 00:12:10.639
While her book was about coming of age story, it was actually she tied into yacht clubs.
00:12:10.668 --> 00:12:15.709
And I think she went to more than a hundred yacht clubs up and down the Pacific Coast over here.
00:12:16.049 --> 00:12:26.429
So, the point is to think outside the box as you always encourage your authors to do, and getting eyes on your book in ways that you never would've imagined.
00:12:26.679 --> 00:12:29.679
I leveraged my students at Washington State University.
00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:32.229
I also teach an MBA marketing class there.
00:12:32.859 --> 00:12:33.579
Of course you do.
00:12:33.788 --> 00:12:34.269
They gave
00:12:34.269 --> 00:12:35.859
me six interns.
00:12:35.889 --> 00:12:38.259
They gave me two last, a year ago in the fall.
00:12:38.259 --> 00:12:40.329
They gave me two in the winter and two in the spring.
00:12:40.329 --> 00:12:42.459
And they did things like create my book trailers.
00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:45.309
They got me going on social media.
00:12:45.549 --> 00:12:46.009
Wow.
00:12:46.009 --> 00:12:47.479
Library outreach.
00:12:47.479 --> 00:12:53.239
So, again, like tap into whatever resources you might have.
00:12:53.629 --> 00:13:04.254
People don't think of themselves as marketing people because they're an author or they're a psychotherapist, or they're a professor of ethics.
00:13:04.524 --> 00:13:07.644
They're not thinking, how do I get this out there?
00:13:07.644 --> 00:13:15.954
But if you're not a marketing person, you probably aren't going to come up with these ideas in a brainstorm of one by yourself.
00:13:16.283 --> 00:13:21.069
It helps to be around other people who can say, oh, I have to go.
00:13:21.069 --> 00:13:23.649
I'm going to be traveling because I'm going to Cannes.
00:13:23.969 --> 00:13:24.538
What?
00:13:25.104 --> 00:13:26.424
Why didn't we talk about that?
00:13:26.454 --> 00:13:27.774
Oh I've been asked to be on a panel.
00:13:27.804 --> 00:13:30.804
What, Deb, you have to tell me these things.
00:13:31.074 --> 00:13:38.214
That is crazy that we overlook the thing that we think is separate.
00:13:38.754 --> 00:13:41.153
But it's not separate because you are one person.
00:13:41.754 --> 00:13:42.324
That's right.
00:13:42.324 --> 00:13:43.644
I'm surprised you remember that.
00:13:43.694 --> 00:13:46.364
This happens with every single person I work with.
00:13:46.783 --> 00:13:52.374
Oh, I didn't think that mattered because that was before, or I'm not doing that anymore.
00:13:52.424 --> 00:14:00.974
No, you were a major magazine editor of a women's magazine and now you do something else.
00:14:00.974 --> 00:14:02.624
But you did that for 25 years.
00:14:02.653 --> 00:14:02.894
Yeah.
00:14:02.894 --> 00:14:03.538
We're going to talk about it.
00:14:03.889 --> 00:14:12.146
The skill and the expertise comes with you, and sometimes you get opportunities because you're so different and It's easy to overlook those things.
00:14:12.276 --> 00:14:20.485
So, we're not thinking of these things that we have the ruby slippers that you're not even aware of that could help you launch your book.
00:14:20.485 --> 00:14:30.566
So, back to your point about staying aligned with what you know, but thinking outside of the box about how can that low key tie in with your book.
00:14:30.776 --> 00:14:32.186
I think that's great advice.
00:14:32.696 --> 00:14:37.961
It's really a conversation about reinvention and identity.
00:14:38.591 --> 00:14:54.011
Because you've reinvented yourself multiple times to global marketing leader to professor and now author and your book has already won more than several awards and continues to gain momentum.
00:14:54.041 --> 00:15:04.179
So, when authors need to draw on their past experience to elevate their book's opportunity, but also their opportunity.
00:15:04.599 --> 00:15:06.609
What can they do?
00:15:07.059 --> 00:15:12.129
What would you tell someone to do today so that they're not starting from zero?
00:15:12.729 --> 00:15:19.894
Number one, have you shake them up a little bit because you give tough love in your one-on-ones, which is what I benefited from.
00:15:20.403 --> 00:15:25.744
But I think they need to hold up the mirror and see what their strengths are.
00:15:26.644 --> 00:15:39.834
What they enjoy, because I would encourage everyone to have fun with this book launch It's whatever brings you joy and because this should be a fun process and it has been for me.
00:15:39.834 --> 00:15:44.783
It has been such a joy ride and I don't think it is for everyone.
00:15:44.793 --> 00:15:47.163
You have to take charge of your book launch.
00:15:47.163 --> 00:15:49.384
You have to take charge of your happiness.
00:15:49.984 --> 00:15:50.403
You do.
00:15:50.403 --> 00:15:54.033
You have to be in your own marketing director.
00:15:54.064 --> 00:16:01.038
I think what I see you doing though is that you are enjoying the whole ride.
00:16:01.099 --> 00:16:06.799
But a lot of people think of the book launch as one event.
00:16:07.309 --> 00:16:10.849
And then it's over, and then they think of it like a memory, like a birthday party.
00:16:11.359 --> 00:16:12.739
And it's not.
00:16:12.788 --> 00:16:17.799
The baby is born, but now it's it's every day, it's out there.
00:16:17.889 --> 00:16:23.619
And so, if you stop talking about it, no one's going to know about it.
00:16:24.099 --> 00:16:34.359
You have to keep talking about it and integrate the events about your book or about your opportunities into your life.
00:16:34.449 --> 00:16:36.519
And when you do that, it brings you joy.
00:16:36.939 --> 00:16:42.189
But if you look at it as an uphill climb, it's going to feel sweaty and painful.
00:16:42.469 --> 00:16:43.459
Something you said.
00:16:43.969 --> 00:16:48.579
Gave me an idea I mentioned I had these students, these interns, that helped me out.
00:16:48.908 --> 00:16:50.259
It actually helped them out.
00:16:50.349 --> 00:16:52.089
It helped them out for their resumes.
00:16:52.089 --> 00:16:54.278
It helped them complete their degree requirement.
00:16:54.278 --> 00:17:00.889
They had to have an unpaid real world marketing experience before they can receive their degree.
00:17:00.889 --> 00:17:02.658
So, I was helping them fulfill that.
00:17:02.658 --> 00:17:08.118
But the point is that these things have legs and that's what you were reminding me of.
00:17:08.453 --> 00:17:14.903
So I did this with the students, but now Washington State put it did an article.
00:17:14.933 --> 00:17:18.743
It was written in the summer, but it just got sent out to all of their alumni.
00:17:18.814 --> 00:17:25.828
Obviously to encourage them if their business owners or to participate to have interns for this program as well.
00:17:26.009 --> 00:17:28.558
So, that's a great benefit for future students.
00:17:28.828 --> 00:17:32.578
But it highlighted these six students and my book, oh, and by the way.
00:17:32.939 --> 00:17:36.568
And then they posted it on LinkedIn back to that.
00:17:36.848 --> 00:17:41.499
So, who would think that this one little intern thing would keep having these legs?
00:17:41.578 --> 00:17:55.128
I want to talk about the difference between pitching an article of, Hey local author gets team of interns to help with book launch.
00:17:55.278 --> 00:18:06.769
That is not news because it gives nothing, no opportunity to the reader or local businesses, but local universities.
00:18:07.368 --> 00:18:16.668
Intern program is serving businesses in the community, and here's an example of one very newsworthy.
00:18:17.449 --> 00:18:20.028
Same benefit to you.
00:18:20.989 --> 00:18:36.889
In fact, a bigger benefit because more people will share the thing that has an opportunity for others instead of just wasn't Deb Miller's singular experience working with interns interesting?
00:18:37.098 --> 00:18:40.699
No, it's not because people are looking for what can I do?
00:18:41.459 --> 00:18:51.489
That reminds me back at that happiness panel with the University of Washington, a couple authors asked me after that event, they was saying, this is like the best event I've ever been to.
00:18:51.489 --> 00:18:54.994
But did you feel bad, Deb, that the focus wasn't really about your book?
00:18:55.594 --> 00:19:01.963
And I said, no, you just told me like this was one of the best or the best event you've ever been to.
00:19:02.384 --> 00:19:05.914
And you could tell by the buzz in the room other people were feeling the same.
00:19:05.914 --> 00:19:08.345
And I had so many people tell me that afterwards.
00:19:08.825 --> 00:19:16.505
I was like a proud parent watching these other two talk about the science of happiness and the storytelling behind it.
00:19:16.555 --> 00:19:22.654
It just seems like one of the tennents of your activities is community building.
00:19:22.715 --> 00:19:24.845
And maybe that was a byproduct.
00:19:25.235 --> 00:19:35.454
But having people come and that there's a buzz and talking to each other, not just to you or not just about you is engaging.
00:19:35.985 --> 00:19:44.715
When people get the opportunity to come together they can walk away with understanding themselves and each other in a deeper way.
00:19:45.434 --> 00:19:48.884
Most bookstores don't have the room to host an event.
00:19:49.634 --> 00:19:56.954
And it is excruciatingly expensive for bookstores to stay open to host your event.
00:19:57.690 --> 00:20:02.970
And they hope that you do the marketing, but they have room for maybe 20 people.
00:20:03.269 --> 00:20:08.539
But when you have your event at a pub, or a yacht club or Dr.
00:20:08.539 --> 00:20:21.230
Mimi Zieman had her book launch at an REI because when she climbed Everest, she took gear from REI and they were more than delighted to host her book launch event.
00:20:21.350 --> 00:20:23.420
And it was packed.
00:20:23.640 --> 00:20:25.110
There had to be a hundred people there.
00:20:25.230 --> 00:20:26.759
The photos tell the story.
00:20:27.360 --> 00:20:38.940
You are giving people more and you can make a list from just this conversation about all the types of places.
00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:41.809
Even like a sorority conference.
00:20:41.809 --> 00:20:49.275
Sororities get together every year to have a leadership conference or women's leadership.
00:20:49.325 --> 00:20:54.130
That way people also don't feel like they're going to get pitch slapped and please buy the book.
00:20:54.730 --> 00:20:57.490
No one wants to be sold at.
00:20:57.819 --> 00:20:59.470
They want to be invited.
00:20:59.470 --> 00:21:01.360
They want to feel part of something.
00:21:01.660 --> 00:21:04.210
And that is good marketing.
00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:09.329
And it also makes you feel like you are part of something too.
00:21:09.329 --> 00:21:11.460
You're not there to shill.
00:21:12.009 --> 00:21:12.370
You can
00:21:12.370 --> 00:21:18.890
give away the book at, if you buy a couple cases of your own book, it's only,$4 each or something.
00:21:18.890 --> 00:21:24.440
But you can give that away and put a little reminder in, please leave a review or whatever.
00:21:24.500 --> 00:21:27.740
If that's the behavior that you're trying to drive.
00:21:28.009 --> 00:21:38.329
But then you've got this ready audience of a hundred women at a luncheon that get this book, that get all excited about it'cause they're getting something for free and you get paid 2,500 just speak to the group.
00:21:38.750 --> 00:21:42.410
So, yes, it makes sense sometimes to just give away your book.
00:21:43.069 --> 00:21:43.549
Right.
00:21:43.850 --> 00:21:56.732
Because people love something that they can take away and that offers them an opportunity to feel like they live that adventure because they're always seeing it through their own experience.
00:21:56.833 --> 00:22:01.363
So, for me, next steps would be targeting women's empowerment groups.
00:22:01.413 --> 00:22:01.893
Yeah.
00:22:02.492 --> 00:22:21.168
Deb, before we call this podcast complete, what is one step you want authors to take today who need to design their marketing efforts so that they feel fresh and full of purpose and true to themselves?
00:22:21.948 --> 00:22:25.307
I think first of all, you need to be clear on what is your goal.
00:22:25.758 --> 00:22:28.008
Is your goal to sell books?
00:22:28.087 --> 00:22:36.278
Is your goal instead to build a business of which the books is just one piece of it And I think you need to know your customer.
00:22:36.278 --> 00:22:39.817
These are classic things that you and I did in the corporate world, right?
00:22:39.918 --> 00:22:44.567
But I think they apply to the whole book marketing piece.
00:22:44.688 --> 00:22:49.877
I will guarantee you that you will find happiness and you will have a successful book launch.
00:22:49.877 --> 00:22:52.337
And the other thing you really need to tie in with Allison.
00:22:52.337 --> 00:22:56.268
I'm not just saying this, I was recommending just somebody just last week.
00:22:57.117 --> 00:22:59.886
because you're overwhelmed at first when you're doing all this bookmarking.
00:22:59.886 --> 00:23:00.937
And there are just so many things.
00:23:00.937 --> 00:23:02.467
I wish I'd found you sooner.
00:23:02.467 --> 00:23:14.317
Because even though I am 20 years as vice president of corporate marketing communication for Fortune 500 companies, I still needed you to help me get my head on straight.
00:23:14.366 --> 00:23:16.917
You help me get back to the basics.
00:23:17.211 --> 00:23:20.481
And learn that what I did know from marketing could apply.
00:23:21.382 --> 00:23:39.184
Thank you Deb, so much for all of your words of wisdom and sharing all of the challenges too that go into this'cause you really are living this experience and holding up the measure of success is happiness.
00:23:39.275 --> 00:23:40.865
Are you enjoying this?
00:23:41.105 --> 00:23:43.055
If you're not enjoying your book launch?
00:23:43.085 --> 00:23:50.730
If it feels like a sweaty mess full of angst and anxiety, then that's going to come across too.
00:23:50.730 --> 00:24:00.480
Nobody's going to want your anxious book, no matter how important it is that it sell, or how important it is that they get the message that's in the book.
00:24:00.480 --> 00:24:03.960
They can't get the message unless it's from you'cause the book can't speak.
00:24:04.410 --> 00:24:07.759
The book can't invite people to events and build engagement.
00:24:07.880 --> 00:24:09.259
Only you can.
00:24:09.610 --> 00:24:14.340
If you can forget what everybody else is doing or what the neighbor did, or the other author.
00:24:14.809 --> 00:24:22.340
Then, you can free yourself to go find your own happy book launch that is tailored just for you.
00:24:22.690 --> 00:24:24.840
I can't even follow that up with anything.
00:24:24.840 --> 00:24:27.420
That was amazing, Deb, thank you so much.
00:24:27.779 --> 00:24:31.529
And for you out there thinking maybe it is time to write my book.
00:24:31.650 --> 00:24:32.430
Yes, it is.
00:24:32.460 --> 00:24:33.269
Stop waiting.
00:24:33.329 --> 00:24:34.769
No one's going to do it for you.
00:24:35.250 --> 00:24:40.079
Your story, your message, your insight, it's needed in the world.
00:24:40.170 --> 00:24:44.610
And the only thing that happens if you wait is more time passes.
00:24:45.150 --> 00:24:49.259
And the person who needs your genius doesn't get it.
00:24:49.860 --> 00:24:55.319
They're still sitting, waiting, and they're hollering, hoping that you will hear their call.
00:24:55.470 --> 00:24:57.990
So, it's time to act.
00:24:57.990 --> 00:24:58.710
Get on it.
00:24:59.440 --> 00:25:02.140
If you need support, you know I'm here.
00:25:02.190 --> 00:25:08.130
At lane lit.com/ Allison, and you can find me right away.
00:25:08.130 --> 00:25:11.160
You can book a call with me and we can talk.
00:25:11.910 --> 00:25:12.779
Easy sneezy.
