Today we'll be continuing Rainbow Valley by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Speaker:
00:02:31
Chapter 19 poor Adam.
Speaker:
00:02:35
When Una got home, Faith was lying face downwards on her bed, utterly refusing to be comforted.
Speaker:
00:02:43
Aunt Martha had killed Adam.
Speaker:
00:02:45
He was reposing on a platter in the pantry that very minute, trust and dressed, encircled by his liver and heart and gizzard, aunt Martha heeded Faith's passion of grief and anger, not a wit.
Speaker:
00:02:59
We had to have something for the strange minister's dinner, she said.
Speaker:
00:03:04
You're too big a girl to make such a fuss over an old rooster.
Speaker:
00:03:07
You knew he'd have to be killed sometime.
Speaker:
00:03:10
I'll tell Father when he comes home what you've done?
Speaker:
00:03:13
Sobbed Faith.
Speaker:
00:03:14
Don't you go bothering your poor father.
Speaker:
00:03:17
He has troubles enough, and I'm housekeeper here.
Speaker:
00:03:21
Adam was mine.
Speaker:
00:03:22
Mrs.
Speaker:
00:03:23
Johnson gave him to me.
Speaker:
00:03:24
You had no business to touch him, stormed Faith.
Speaker:
00:03:28
Don't you get sassy now.
Speaker:
00:03:30
The rooster's killed, and there's an end of it.
Speaker:
00:03:32
I ain't going to set no strange minister down to a dinner of cold billion mutton.
Speaker:
00:03:36
I was brought up to no better than that.
Speaker:
00:03:38
If I've come down in the world.
Speaker:
00:03:41
Faith would not go down to supper that night, and she would not go to church the next morning.
Speaker:
00:03:46
But at dinner time, she went to the table, her eyes swollen, was crying, her face sullen.
Speaker:
00:03:53
The Reverend James Perry was a sleek, repiconed man with a bristling white mustache, bushy white eyebrows, and a shining bald head.
Speaker:
00:04:03
He was certainly not handsome, and he was a very tiresome, pompous sort of person.
Speaker:
00:04:09
But if he had looked like the Ark Angel Michael and talked with the tongues of men and angels, faith would still have utterly detested him.
Speaker:
00:04:18
He carved Adam up dexterously, showing off his plump white hands and very handsome diamond ring.
Speaker:
00:04:24
Also, he made jovial remarks alter the performance.
Speaker:
00:04:28
Jerry and Carl giggled, and even Una smiled Wayne Lee, because she thought politeness demanded it.
Speaker:
00:04:36
But Faith only Scowled darkly.
Speaker:
00:04:38
The Reverend James thought her manner shockingly bad.
Speaker:
00:04:42
Once, when he was delivering himself of an unctuous remark to Jerry, faith broke in rudely with a flat contradiction.
Speaker:
00:04:49
The Reverend James drew his bushy eyebrows together at her.
Speaker:
00:04:52
Little girls should not interrupt, he said.
Speaker:
00:04:55
And they should not contradict people who know far more than they do.
Speaker:
00:04:59
This put Faith in a worse temper than ever to be called little girl, as if she were no bigger than chubbyrilla blight over an ingle side.
Speaker:
00:05:07
It was insufferable, and how that abominable Mr.
Speaker:
00:05:11
Perry did eat.
Speaker:
00:05:12
He even picked poor Adam's bones.
Speaker:
00:05:15
Neither Faith nor Una would touch a mouthful, and looked upon the boys as little better than cannibals.
Speaker:
00:05:22
They felt that if the awful repast did not soon come to an end, she would wind it up by throwing something at Mr.
Speaker:
00:05:28
Perry's gleaming head.
Speaker:
00:05:30
Fortunately, Mr.
Speaker:
00:05:31
Perry found Aunt Martha's leathery apple pie too much even for his powers of mastication.
Speaker:
00:05:36
And the meal came to an end after a long grace in which Mr.
Speaker:
00:05:41
Perry offered up devout banks for the food, which a kind and beneficient providence had provided for sustenance and temperate pleasure.
Speaker:
00:05:50
God hadn't a single thing to do with providing Adam for you, muttered Faith, rebelliously under her breath.
Speaker:
00:05:56
The boys gladly made their escape to outdoors.
Speaker:
00:05:59
Una went to help Aunt Martha with the dishes, though that rather grumpy old dame never welcomed her timid assistance.
Speaker:
00:06:06
And Faith betook herself to the study, where a cheerful wood fire was burning in the grate.
Speaker:
00:06:11
She thought she would thereby escape from the hated Mr.
Speaker:
00:06:14
Perry, who had announced his intention of taking a nap in his room during the afternoon, but scarcely had Faith settled in a corner with a book when he walked in, and standing before the fire, proceeded to survey the disorderly study with an air of disapproval.
Speaker:
00:06:30
Your father's book seemed to be in somewhat deplorable confusion.
Speaker:
00:06:33
My little girl, he said severely, face darkled in her corner, and said not a word.
Speaker:
00:06:39
She would not talk to this creature.
Speaker:
00:06:43
You should try to put them in.
Speaker:
00:06:44
Order, Mr.
Speaker:
00:06:46
Perry went on, playing with his handsome watch chain and smiling patronizingly on Faith.
Speaker:
00:06:51
You are quite old enough to attend to such duties.
Speaker:
00:06:54
My little daughter at home is only ten, and she's already an excellent little housekeeper and the greatest help and comfort to her mother.
Speaker:
00:07:02
She's a very sweet child.
Speaker:
00:07:04
I wish you had the privilege of her acquaintance.
Speaker:
00:07:06
She could help you in many ways.
Speaker:
00:07:09
Of course, you have not had the inesteemable privilege of a good mother's care and training.
Speaker:
00:07:13
A sad lack, a very sad lack.
Speaker:
00:07:16
I've spoken more than once to your father in this connection and pointed out.
Speaker:
00:07:20
His duty to him faithfully, but so.
Speaker:
00:07:23
Far with no effect.
Speaker:
00:07:24
I trust he may awaken to a realization of his responsibility before it is too late.
Speaker:
00:07:29
In the meantime, it is your duty and privilege to endeavor to take your sainted mother's place.
Speaker:
00:07:35
You might exercise a great influence over your brothers and your little sister.
Speaker:
00:07:39
You might be a true mother to them.
Speaker:
00:07:41
I fear that you do not think of these things as you should, my dear child.
Speaker:
00:07:46
Allow me to open your eyes and regard to them.
Speaker:
00:07:49
Mr.
Speaker:
00:07:49
Perry's oily complacent voice trickled on.
Speaker:
00:07:53
He was in his element.
Speaker:
00:07:55
Nothing suited him better than to lay down the law, patronize and exhort.
Speaker:
00:08:00
He had no idea of stopping, and he did not stop.
Speaker:
00:08:04
He stood before the fire, his feet planted firmly on the rug, and poured out a flood of pompous platitudes.
Speaker:
00:08:12
They'd heard not a word.
Speaker:
00:08:14
She was really not listening to him at all, but she was watching his.
Speaker:
00:08:18
Long black coattails with impished delight growing.
Speaker:
00:08:21
In her brown eyes.
Speaker:
00:08:22
Mr.
Speaker:
00:08:23
Perry was standing very near the fire.
Speaker:
00:08:27
His coattails began to scorch.
Speaker:
00:08:29
His coattails began to smoke.
Speaker:
00:08:31
He still posed on, wrapped up in his own eloquence.
Speaker:
00:08:35
The coattail smoked worse.
Speaker:
00:08:37
A tiny spark flew up from the.
Speaker:
00:08:38
Burning wood and alighted in the middle of one.
Speaker:
00:08:41
It clung and caught and spread into a smoldering flame.
Speaker:
00:08:45
Faith could restrain herself no longer and broke into a stifled giggle.
Speaker:
00:08:49
Mr.
Speaker:
00:08:50
Perry stopped short, angered over this impertinence.
Speaker:
00:08:54
Suddenly he became conscious that a wreak of burning cloth filled the room.
Speaker:
00:08:58
He whirled around and saw nothing.
Speaker:
00:09:00
Then he clapped his hands to his coattails and brought them around in front of him.
Speaker:
00:09:04
There was already quite a hole in one of them, and this was his new suit.
Speaker:
00:09:09
Faith shook with helpless laughter over his pose and expression.
Speaker:
00:09:13
Did you see my coattails burning?
Speaker:
00:09:15
He demanded angrily.
Speaker:
00:09:17
Yes, sir, said Faith Demurely.
Speaker:
00:09:20
Why didn't you tell me?
Speaker:
00:09:22
He demanded, glaring at her.
Speaker:
00:09:24
You said it wasn't good manners to interrupt, sir, said Faith, more demerily still.
Speaker:
00:09:30
If I was your father, I would give you a spanking that you would.
Speaker:
00:09:34
Remember all your life.
Speaker:
00:09:35
Miss, said a very angry reverend gentleman as he stalked out of the study.
Speaker:
00:09:41
The coat of Mr.
Speaker:
00:09:42
Meredith's second best suit would not fit Mr.
Speaker:
00:09:44
Perry, so he had to go to the evening service with his singed coattail.
Speaker:
00:09:49
But he did not walk up the aisle with his usual consciousness of the honor he was conferring on the building.
Speaker:
00:09:54
He never would agree to an exchange of pulpits with Mr.
Speaker:
00:09:57
Meredith again, and he was barely civil to the latter when they met a few minutes at the station the next morning.
Speaker:
00:10:04
But Faith felt a certain gloomy satisfaction.
Speaker:
00:10:07
Adam was partially avenged.
Speaker:
