OVER DEZE AFLEVERING

Episode 4240 │ October 1, 2026
"We killed kids. We killed them." No official apology. Just an outdated database and a system called Maven taking the blame instead.
WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS
Scott Kesterson breaks down the kill chain — the military's own term for the human verification process that stands between identifying a target and authorizing a strike — using the February 2026 strike on an elementary school and medical clinic in Minab, Iran as the case study, where 120 to 123 children were among as many as 170 people killed. Scott traces the failure to a targeting database that still listed the school and clinic as part of a military compound years after Iran had physically and administratively separated them, a civilian-harm oversight team that was removed from the Pentagon roughly five months before the war began, and the Maven targeting system, built by Palantir, which had no way to flag a target as disqualified before the strike — only a quiet software update added afterward. The episode closes on Anthropic's refusal to let its Claude model be used for domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, the Pentagon's subsequent blacklisting of Anthropic even while Claude remained embedded inside Maven throughout the campaign, and new research showing measurable accuracy degradation in long AI research chains — a problem researchers call context rot — that Scott argues directly undermines confidence in a targeting system now largely running without meaningful human review.
KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED
- What happened at the Minab elementary school and medical clinic strike in February 2026, and why does Scott argue that a 2019 database update showing both buildings were no longer part of the military compound being missed is not an excusable technical failure under the laws of war?
- Why did Anthropic refuse the Pentagon's demand to use Claude for domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons systems, and why does Scott argue the resulting blacklist didn't actually remove Claude from the targeting system that was already using it?
- What is context rot, and why does Scott argue that a measured 30-plus percent error rate in long AI research chains matters enormously for a targeting system processing over 13,000 targets with reduced human verification?
