OM DENNE EPISODE
Welcome to the Charismatic Leader Podcast.
In this episode, Brett McDermott dives into the science of affirmations—why the classic “positive thinking” approach can backfire, and how to use affirmations in ways that truly build confidence and resilience. Drawing on research from psychology and neuroscience, Brett explains why unbelievable statements trigger self‑doubt, and how to reframe affirmations so they strengthen your mindset instead of undermining it.
He explores self‑affirmation theory, the neuroscience behind values reflection, and studies showing how affirmations reduce stress and improve performance. Brett then shares four practical techniques: choosing values‑based affirmations, using “I’m learning/I’m becoming” statements, coaching yourself in the third person, and pairing affirmations with concrete plans. Finally, he introduces a five‑minute morning routine that combines all of these methods into a daily practice that compounds over time.
This episode is packed with actionable insights for leaders, salespeople, and anyone who wants affirmations to be more than hype—to become tools for clarity, calm, and consistent action.
