OM DENNE EPISODE
Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi is more terrifying than its reputation for wonder suggests.
In this episode of Second Cut, we look at Close Encounters of the Third Kind, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and War of the Worlds to trace Spielberg’s darker science-fiction mode: UFO obsession, family breakdown, artificial love, government secrecy, post-9/11 fear, and the strange line between awe and horror.
We discuss John Williams, New Hollywood spectacle, Paul Schrader’s rejected Close Encounters draft, Richard Dreyfuss, Francois Truffaut, Stanley Kubrick, Supertoys Last All Summer Long, Pinocchio, Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law’s Gigolo Joe, H.G. Wells, Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, the red weed, and why Spielberg’s aliens are rarely just aliens.
