In the past, I\'ve used water power to power a hammer and a forge blower but I envisioned a method of producing power that would be independent of a water source. The concept of a \"convection mill\" that could be set up anywhere and powered by fire was what I wanted to test. So I modified an existing radial fan from my blower, giving it an axial form by twisting the blades. The design worked as a windmill when sat on tree forks so that the axle could spin freely. Next I tied it to a string and hung it above a fire whereby it spun about its vertical axis. I next tested it in a wooden frame above a fire where it spun well too. I then built a pyramidal hood to funnel the hot air up to the blades causing the fan to spin more efficiently. Finally, I used the turbine to power a forge blower. It did so very weakly and then the whole contraption burnt down. The concept has potential but needs work. About Primitive Technology: Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. I made iron using the old blower variant but using a larger diameter fan (30 cm rather than 25 cm). I did a longer smelt and a shorter smelt. The long smelt made 10 g of iron but the short smelt made 14 g sugesting that multiple shorter duration smelts may be more effective at producing iron rather…
I fired 2 batches of barrel roof tiles to form the roof of the hut built in the previous episode. Then I cut the purlins for the roof and plastered them onto the gable end walls. The tiles were then put in place to start forming the roof. So far the walls are suporting the weight of the roof and ti…
I tested a variant of roof tie where it is a flat trapesoid with curved up sides to test if I could fit more of them into a kiln and have them cover more roof area than the curved barrel tiles. It turns out that the reason curved roof tiles are so comon is because the shape gives a long tile more…
I built a permanent wall structure using homemade fired bricks and a refined mud mortar mix. Watch the entire ancient engineering process from raw earth to finished masonry. The finished mortar gives the wall a clean, sturdy bond. #PrimitiveTechnology #building #mortar #firedbricks #engineering …
