Packers Total Access: Josh Jacobs Finally Speaks About Arrest
Josh Jacobs spoke to reporters Wednesday for the first time since his May arrest, after returning to practice following his removal from the Commissioner’s Exempt List. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery and criminal damage to property after a May 23 incident at his home with his then-girlfriend, who told police he threw her to the ground. Jacobs missed the first six games of the season, and those games count toward any suspension the NFL may still impose. He is eligible to play Sunday at Detroit, but the league’s investigation remains open. His comments have drawn both sympathy and sharp criticism, and we break down exactly what he said and what is still unresolved.
In this complete breakdown of Jacobs’ first comments, we dive into:
- What He Said About The Arrest: Jacobs said he is “remorseful and sorry for putting this team in this situation,” with his voice quivering, and described it as a “three-second, four-second decision” that “can alter your life.” He said he apologized to his teammates in a team meeting. He declined to discuss specifics, saying he can’t get into details, and he said he is “not trying to win nobody back” and will let people who know him speak to his character.
- The Comments That Drew Criticism: Jacobs said that “for my life, it was probably one of the best things to ever happen to me,” explaining that it forced him to reevaluate what’s important. Heavy called the remark “tone-deaf” given the circumstances of the incident. He also said “six games was a lot, honestly, but that’s not really up to me to decide,” and that he never worried his career was over.
- What Is Still Unresolved: The NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy investigation is still open, and the league has been seeking the garage surveillance video from the incident. Both Jacobs and the woman have filed suit to keep that video permanently sealed. A suspension is still possible, though the six games already served would be credited toward it.
- What It Means For Sunday At Detroit: Jacobs is eligible to play, but LaFleur has said his status for the game is still to be determined. The Packers’ running game has been one of the weakest in the league, so his return matters on the field. The conversation around his return will keep going as long as the league’s review is open.
