00:00:28
Speaker 4: Adios.
00:00:30
Speaker 3: Good.
00:00:31
Speaker 1: Today, we celebrate Mike Kruko Day on The Sports Leader.
00:00:37
Speaker 4: Oh, and a Reggae Friday, too. Sounded good. Well, give me that real quick. What do you got? This is you, Roy.
00:00:43
Speaker 1: Don't stay away.
00:00:44
Speaker 4: Sounded good.
00:00:45
Speaker 1: Don't stay away, Mike.
00:00:46
Speaker 4: Stay, Mike.
00:00:46
Speaker 2: Stay.
00:00:47
Speaker 4: Guy Haberman, we talk to every Friday. Voice of the 49ers. 49ers Cardinals. But Guy, being a broadcaster... Definitely probably has a thought on Mike Kruko, who just rewrote the book on how to do it in the baseball booth. So, Guy, before we get to the 49ers and this bad news about Nick Bosa, I'm sure you had a little thought.
00:01:07
Speaker 2: And good morning, Guy. How are you? Hey, what's up, Guy? Good morning, guys. Good to talk to you. Of course. I mean, and as a baseball, you know, as a lifelong baseball fan, there's nothing quite like a baseball broadcaster because they're with you every single day. And, um, I think the amazing thing about him is it, it was always fresh. You know, I, I, um, over the years would meet him a time or two, nothing, no interactions that, that, um, he would remember, but it just always struck me how, how warm and kind and open, you know, I think when you are, um, especially with baseball, because it is every day and every day people are meeting you and every day people are saying hello. And every day when you're, You know, as famous as he is, everyone wants to just catch a moment. And just the warmth, the fun, the generosity of spirit, you know, all of those things that came across on the air too, right? Like the authenticity, the sincerity, the fun. So I just feel, you know, so lucky to have just been a fan watching him. um, my entire life. And then we moved to the, we moved to David. My dad was in the air force. We moved to Davis in 1999. My dad's from Maryland. And so that's where we lived the first few years of my life. And so I was an oil camp because John, you know, I would go to bed listening to John Miller every night in Baltimore, Maryland. And, um, we moved around the air force and, and then we moved out to Davis at 99 and, Oh my God, there was, there was John on the radio again.
00:02:37
Speaker 3: Right.
00:02:37
Speaker 2: And then it opened the door to, and of course I became a giants fan immediately. And, And then it opened the door to Kruk and Kipe and, you know, later Dave. But over the years, Ted and Greg and, you know, I just, when I watch baseball, it's someone who, when I brought, I know how hard it can be in June and July, especially if the team's not great. But they're long days and they're long seasons. And I think everybody here does appreciate, like, I think you guys know, and I think the people listening know how lucky we all are. and have been, and it's not normal to have that level of entertainment and that level of fun. And, um, you know, Mike's at the center of it all. So I, it's, uh, I'll, I'll miss them. I'll, I'll, I'll miss them on TV. That's for sure. I'm just grateful to have met them a few times. And, and, um, you know, sometimes people live up to your expectations, right? You're like, Oh yeah. How could some, a public figure live up to your expectations? And I, you know, I don't, I don't, how do you compare? How do you say like, Oh, it reminds me. but he reminds me in an odd way of the times I met and then worked a few times with Bill Walton. And I was like, Oh, this guy, everything I hoped he would be, he was, you know, and I, I never worked closely with group, but you're like, gosh, when you meet him, you're like everything you think and hope he might be, he just is. And that's, I mean, that's rare and it's amazing. It's really amazing.
00:04:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, well said, Guy, and that's why we're going to celebrate the career of Mike Krukow all weekend long. We'll celebrate today after we got the breaking news from the mayor that today is officially Kruk and Kipe Day. But after our conversation with Mike Krukow earlier this morning, getting that breaking news from the mayor, we got breaking news from Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport just about 10, 15 minutes ago, Guy, that Nick Bosa is not only out this weekend, he's expected to miss a few weeks, and there's a possibility that he could land on the IR with that knee and calf injury.
00:04:29
Speaker 4: So your instant reaction to this Nick Bosa news.
00:04:32
Speaker 2: I mean, it sucks. It hurts. I mean, he's a great player. I think part of the reason you look at his team and go, man, this could be a special year is because you didn't know the offseason, the injury last year, and then Nick Bosa made it back for week one. And then he said, after the week two game, he felt better in week two than he did in week one. So, you know, I do think that they like it, whether or not this had happened, you like the three of us today would probably be talking about, do they add some defensive line help? You'll get Michael Williams back, but you know, I think it only accelerates that. And, you know, we've done it over the years, right. Where you like do this little juggle. We did it last year. are they good enough? Are they worthy as a team to justify making a move? And part of the reason yet, like, well, you got Nick, you know, we had talked about this three days ago. He's like, well, you got both. So you got all these guys. Like it was so obvious that this team was worthy. And I still think they are, but it gets harder because you know, you got, you got to have somebody else willing to make a move too. And right now, you know, there's only been a couple of weeks of football. And so people aren't in a rush. And the, you know, the first thing that comes up is Max Crosby, but the Raiders are good. They're two and oh, And I don't know if Mark Davis would want to trade you Max Crosby. And he certainly wouldn't want to do it, you know, like two weeks before he plays the Niners. Cause that Niner Raider game is just a few days before the trade deadline. But the Raiders have bigger hopes now. So part of, part of what I was going to do today is a little, a little league review who might be out there, but yeah, it's, it's it just feels like the hits keep coming sometimes.
00:06:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, Guy Haberman, of course, the voice of the 49ers. He'll be on the call Sunday on 8, 10 a.m. and 107.7 The Bone. And he will be calling a 49er team that's eight and a half point favorites over the Cardinals, but dealing with yet another injury in this one, as Marcus just said, is such a big one. Nick Bosa, at least out this Sunday, perhaps a few weeks and maybe to IR per Adam Schefter in Ian Rappaport. Unbelievable. And then yet, I mean, it's almost like you're so fixated on that. You kind of forgot that they had to go sign Brandon Cooks. because the receiver room was so light this week. So just a moment on that guy. I mean, listen, he's a good vibe guy. His Instagram post was good about the Bay area and Stockton guy. And he's got, you know, and Kyle spoke highly of him on, on the, on both on the press conference on KMBR yesterday, your reaction. I mean, he may not play this Sunday. He said it'd be hard to anticipate. John Lynch told us it would be hard to anticipate him playing Sunday, but how are you feeling about the receiving situation?
00:07:05
Speaker 2: Well, my first reaction to the Brandon Cook signing was, in my head, I processed it as like, oh, well, they'll try him out and see if he can do anything. But that's not exactly what it was. They just signed him. And then I texted a few people, a buddy who played in the NFL and knows him, and he called Brandon Cooks the hardest worker he's ever seen. And then I did a little digging on his time in Buffalo last year. You know, he was on the Saints last year and got cut, released, and cleared waivers, and then went to Buffalo and And what I found out when I dug a little on Buffalo is that he became Josh Allen's favorite target is what I was told down the stretch crunch time last year. And then I went and watched the last regular season game that Brandon cooks played in the two playoff games. And you guys will remember that the famous play of course, was the interception that was, you know, it was that deep contested ball overtime against the Broncos in the playoffs last year. And it was became kind of controversial because it looked like he caught it. And then the defensive back took it away from him. And it was like, is this a catch? Is it not a catch? And, Romo and Nance, where everyone was going on about it and Gene Steratore and it was an interception. But going back and watching those three games, he still had the speed because Josh Allen underthrew him three times in those three games, including on that interception. When I say underthrew, like he just had to slow down to the ball. He was very aggressive. when there was a contested catch situation, he picked up a number of first down. It was just clear that what, what I had heard that he was highly trusted by Josh Allen was true. And when you go, when I went and watched those last three games, just to finish last year, so it's not like this was two years ago. It was clear he was still a really good player. So my optimism has actually gotten pretty high for the possibility that Brandon cooks is a major contributor yesterday. Clay Kubiak was asked about Jordan Watkins, who he, you know, like there were high hopes for, I think we all had high hopes for him a fourth round pick last year and battled the injury last year. And then this year I thought looked good early in camp and had some moments in the preseason, but that's a not great moments in the preseason. And, uh, Clay Kubiak was basically like, yeah, well, he's going to get his opportunity probably. And he's got to make the most of it. And so, you know, I, I, I think the way it feels right now, if I had to predict, I would expect Jordan Watkins going to play this week. But I don't, you know, I think it's a matter of time before Brandon cooks is hot on his heels and, and is probably an active roster guy for the 49ers, you know? So I, I do think Brandon cooks can make a pretty, I think he'd make an impact for this team.
00:09:29
Speaker 3: Guy, yesterday we talked to John Lynch about the possibility of trading away Mac Jones because of all the injuries we're seeing at quarterback around the league. And of course, he talked about the value of Mac Jones as a backup quarterback. But now with this Nick Bosa news, does this change the likelihood of maybe trading Mac Jones to bring in a defensive lineman?
00:09:46
Speaker 2: That's a great observation. Like I heard the interview and, you know, I'm like, I don't like Mac Jones is just he's a luxury guy. And, you know, bad teams don't get to have luxuries, but good teams do, right? If you're a good team, you're competing for a divisional crown. Maybe you think you can win the conference. You want to be a Super Bowl contender. We saw last year having a backup quarterback who can go win you, even if it's a game, is really a luxury worth having. But what if you need ammo? Yeah. or you need to replenish draft picks or whatever. So I thought the same thing this morning, Marcus, like, gosh, okay. It's not going to be like, you're not trading Mac for a defensive pass rusher, but if you need to get a pass rusher and it's going to cost you picks, do you need to recoup a pick or two by trading Mac? And, you know, I don't think they want, I do think they're sincere and like, we don't want to. And the off season proved it. Like you gotta really give us something. We're not giving you Mac Jones for a fourth round pick. because he can go win us a game and that's worth something when, when we're good. But, um, you know, from their perspective, but it, now you got to wonder like if they have to get, uh, or two defensive linemen, do they have to make the hard decision on Mac Jones? Because, you know, it, it might cost him picks. So I, I don't, I don't know how he's thinking about it, but I do think he's gotta be, I'm with you, Marcus. Like it does kind of make you reevaluate what you're willing to do there. Cause you, you might have to spend some picks to get some players.
00:11:15
Speaker 4: This is why we can't have nice things. They say, you know, I mean, my gosh, we're just trying to enjoy the 49ers, man. They're two and all. You know, I think about the, you know, we were all, I wasn't, I.
00:11:27
Speaker 2: Had moved back up to Northern California in 2010, but I came at the end of 2012 and then was here fully in 2014. And I was, you know, a Giants fan watching very closely from, from Fresno working there at the time. But, you know, these were not flat roads to those championships. No, I just tell myself, it only makes it sweeter when you finally win it, that you've, you've been through all this hardship. That's, that's the only way I think I can, uh, I can get through it with the, with a smile.
00:11:55
Speaker 4: I mean, listen, as of now, we'll wait and see he's out for Sunday. It could be IR could be a few weeks. Maybe he returns, you know, mid season, who knows, but either way, I mean, in the end guy, just kind of wrapping it up though, you still feel like without Bosa, they have enough firepower to beat the Cardinal Sunday.
00:12:12
Speaker 2: I do. Yes, absolutely. And it wasn't going to be easy anyway. Like they're better than Miami. I think, I think they played a similar game with the Seahawks this last week. The dolphins played. We're in the end, you look to the scoring with no chance, but if you went and watch, you're like, Oh, I got a little respect for that. I've got some respect for that team. You know, they want to be physical. They got Trey McBride. They get the ball out quick. Jacoby percent gets the ball out quickly. So they got good running backs, you know? So, but yeah, Yeah, I mean, the good news is the 49ers offense is firing at all cylinders. The secondary is playing well. But, you know, Nick had been really good in the run game, which is already an area of concern. But it definitely makes this week even more important to win. You've got to stack up as many as you can, not knowing how long you may be without them.
00:13:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, it would be nice to get to 3-0 and just even without Bosa, 3-0 is 3-0, so that's a big deal. All right, guys, we'll listen for the call. We'll be playing your touchdown calls on Monday as the 49ers hopefully cruise despite the bad news to Bosa. So have a great call, man.
00:13:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, guys. All right, thanks, guys. Have a great weekend.
00:13:17
Speaker 4: There he is, Guy Haberman. And we just told you guys, if you're just tuning in, Adam Schefter and Ian Rappaport report that Ian, pardon me, that Nick Bosa strained a calf or injured a calf in practice this week and will be out for Sunday and could miss a few weeks. And there's a possibility he would go On to IR. So just more bad news. God, we're dealing with the Mike Kruko sentimental farewell, and now we get this. So it's just this whole thing we call sports. And, you know, at least it's a reggae Friday. Yeah, but you said it. This is why we can't have nice things.
00:13:49
Speaker 2: Oh, man.
00:13:50
Speaker 4: All right, guys. Here's the deal. Cooler content stacked. Did you guys see the White Sox clinch last night? Murakami, you got to hear that, among other things, and then Susan Slusser, and then our tribute to Mike Kuko voicemails, and then the great Darren Chan, the guy behind the guy who's got all the stories at 9.30 on The Sports Leader.
