00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:22.080
Hello and welcome to today's episode.
00:00:22.240 --> 00:00:27.920
You got the raise, you got the promotion, you changed jobs, you finally crossed six figures.
00:00:28.080 --> 00:00:31.600
Or maybe you're making more money than you've ever made in your entire life.
00:00:31.760 --> 00:00:34.320
So why don't you feel any richer?
00:00:34.560 --> 00:00:42.159
Because sometimes, even though the income went up, you're still looking at your bank account, wondering where all your money went.
00:00:42.320 --> 00:00:47.760
And maybe you're even a little bit embarrassed by it because you know that you're making good money.
00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:54.320
On paper, you're doing really well, but your actual financial life, it doesn't feel like you're doing really well.
00:00:54.560 --> 00:00:59.920
Today, I want to talk about why that happens and what you can do about it.
00:01:00.160 --> 00:01:05.280
Making more money and building financial security, those are two different skills.
00:01:05.520 --> 00:01:09.439
And I think we confuse those two things all the time.
00:01:09.680 --> 00:01:19.039
We are taught that if you work hard, you build your career, you get the promotion, you increase your income, and eventually money will get easier.
00:01:19.200 --> 00:01:25.840
And sometimes it does, but sometimes you get the bigger paycheck and your life gets bigger right along with it.
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:40.480
You move into the nicer place, you upgrade your car, you start traveling differently, you eat at better restaurants, you outsource things because you're busy, and maybe you're spending more on your appearance because of your career.
00:01:40.640 --> 00:01:46.960
You're taking Ubers because you're exhausted, you're door dashing because you've been in meetings all day.
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:51.120
And the last thing you want to figure out after a long day is dinner.
00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:58.159
Individually, none of those things necessarily are a problem, but that's what makes lifestyle creep so sneaky.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:04.560
They're usually not one giant purchase that you can look at and say, oh, there's where my money went.
00:02:04.719 --> 00:02:14.719
It's the$40 here, it's the$50 here, it's$100 here, it's a subscription, a weekend away, an Amazon order, dinner with your friends, something for the house.
00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:19.920
And pretty soon your new income becomes your new normal.
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:22.639
It's so easy for this to happen, y'all.
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:23.600
I have to tell you.
00:02:23.759 --> 00:02:30.000
So a couple of years ago, my fiance and I, we took our first business class international flight.
00:02:30.160 --> 00:02:34.399
And when I tell y'all, that completely changed my brain chemistry.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:38.639
And so after that, we started traveling only in business class.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:44.000
Well, y'all know that I took a huge pay cut in order to pursue my business full time.
00:02:44.160 --> 00:02:47.680
And I am taking my first international trip coming up this year.
00:02:47.839 --> 00:02:49.600
Later this year, I'm going to Vietnam.
00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:51.839
And I started booking those flights.
00:02:52.160 --> 00:02:56.160
Baby, business class is not business class and like it used to.
00:02:56.240 --> 00:02:59.360
It's astronomical because of where I am in my life today.
00:02:59.519 --> 00:03:07.920
And so it's very easy for what used to feel like a luxury that you did sometimes to become your new normal.
00:03:08.160 --> 00:03:14.879
And then there's another piece to this because sometimes when you've worked really hard to get where you are spending, it becomes the reward.
00:03:15.040 --> 00:03:23.519
You've spent years building your career, you got the degrees, you worked late, you dealt with the stress, you've taken care of everybody else.
00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:30.079
And when you finally start making good money, there's this feeling that I worked hard, I deserve this.
00:03:30.160 --> 00:03:31.040
And you know what?
00:03:31.360 --> 00:03:33.759
You probably do deserve nice things.
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:38.240
I am not here to tell you that you need to stop enjoying your money.
00:03:38.480 --> 00:03:39.280
That's not the goal.
00:03:39.439 --> 00:03:41.920
It was never the goal, it'll never be the goal.
00:03:42.079 --> 00:03:51.680
But the question I want you to start asking yourself is this is the way that I'm spending my money helping me create the life that I actually want?
00:03:51.839 --> 00:04:01.360
There is a big difference between spending money on something that generally matters to you and spending money because you've gotten used to having the income to cover it.
00:04:01.600 --> 00:04:10.000
If your income has increased and you still don't feel financially secure, your first instinct might be, I just need to make more money.
00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:12.160
But let's play that out for just a second.
00:04:12.399 --> 00:04:16.959
Let's say you're making$85,000 now and you think, I need to make$100K.
00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:19.360
That's the number that will finally get me ahead.
00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:22.879
And then you get to 100K, but life expands.
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:26.639
And now you're thinking, okay, maybe I need to make$120.
00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:29.360
That's the number that's going to change everything for me.
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:35.439
And then you get to$120 and still somehow you're waiting on the next paycheck.
00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:48.640
At some point, we have got to stop moving the finish line because if you don't learn how to manage the money you're making now, another$10,000 or$20,000 may not create the security that you think it's going to create.
00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:55.520
It can absolutely give you more options, but more income doesn't automatically create more intention.
00:04:55.920 --> 00:04:57.520
So what do you do instead?
00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:00.160
I want you to do something very simple.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:03.840
I want you to look at your last three months of spending.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:07.439
Not because we're about to judge every transaction, because we're not.
00:05:07.600 --> 00:05:08.800
I don't actually care.
00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:11.759
I want you to look at your money with curiosity.
00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:16.080
Ask yourself, where did my money actually go?
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:21.439
And then ask, what did I spend money on that genuinely made my life better?
00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:27.120
And then finally, I want you to ask, what did I spend money on that I barely remember?
00:05:27.280 --> 00:05:30.480
Because that last question is going to be eye-opening.
00:05:30.640 --> 00:05:32.800
I don't want you to stop spending money.
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:36.000
I want you to be able to spend your money on purpose.
00:05:36.240 --> 00:05:41.520
I want you to be able to enjoy the dinner, take the trip, buy the thing that gives you joy.
00:05:41.680 --> 00:05:52.160
But also, I want you to know that you're saving, you're preparing for emergencies, you're paying down debt, you're building wealth, you're making progress towards the things that matter to you and your life.
00:05:52.400 --> 00:05:59.280
And that is very different from crossing your fingers until payday, even though you're making six figures.
00:05:59.520 --> 00:06:02.480
And if you're listening to this thinking, Sabrina, that's me.
00:06:02.640 --> 00:06:04.160
I want you to know something.
00:06:04.400 --> 00:06:11.439
The fact that you're a high earner doesn't mean that you're automatically supposed to know how to manage everything perfectly.
00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:18.319
Being great at your career and intentionally being good with your money, those are two very different skill sets.
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:24.560
And yet, somewhere along the line, we are expected to just know how to manage money.
00:06:24.720 --> 00:06:27.120
And that's exactly why I do this work.
00:06:27.280 --> 00:06:35.680
I work with professional, high-achieving women who make good money but are tired of wondering why they don't feel the money in their lives.
00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:39.759
I don't want you just going through life trying to earn more money.
00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:45.600
The goal is to finally feel like the money that you are earning is working for you.
00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:56.879
So if you've gotten the raise and you're making good money and you're still wondering why I don't feel financially secure, I want you to know that making more money isn't necessarily the answer.
00:06:57.120 --> 00:07:02.879
Sometimes we need to get really clear about what the money that is already in our life is doing.
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:06.560
And that's exactly where I start with my one-on-one coaching clients.
00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:12.240
Over 12 weeks, we look at your actual numbers, your spendings, your values, your goals.
00:07:12.400 --> 00:07:16.800
Then we build a plan for your money that reflects what you want your life to look like.
00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:23.759
Maybe that's paying down debt, maybe that's planning for retirement, maybe it's travel, maybe you want to be the rich aunt.
00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:27.920
Your money gets to have a job that's meaningful to you.
00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:35.520
If you are ready to stop wondering where your money went and start deciding where you want it to go, the next step is a consultation call.
00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:40.080
You can book it with the link in the show notes, or you can send me a DM on Instagram.
00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:42.400
My DMs are always open.
00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:45.040
And I'll see you in the next episode.
