He founded the Galerie thaddaeus ropac in 1981, and represents today more than 60 artists with his galleries in Salzburg (Austria), Paris Le Marais, Paris Pantin (both France) and London (Ely House, 38 Dover Street).

thaddaeus ropac was born as Thaddäus Josef Ropač within a family of the Carinthian Slovenes in Klagenfurt/Austria, and was raised in Carinthia, Austria's southernmost state.
