🎙️ In this episode of The Self-Unemployed Podcast, Colin Munro sits down with his good friend and fellow Samuel Leeds Academy member, Joseph Newland. Joseph is a dynamic, bilingual entrepreneur, international property investor, and now published children's author. Despite facing dyslexia and school struggles that left him feeling sidelined, he transformed those challenges into strengths—building a portfolio of rent HMOs using none of his own money, traveling the world with his family, and recently launching his inspiring book, The Cosmic Surfing Snail, with all profits going to ocean cleanup charities.
🔑 Key points we discuss in the episode:
- How dyslexic thinking (out-of-the-box problem-solving and big-picture vision) becomes a "diffability" superpower for entrepreneurs, not a limitation
- Joseph's bold 6-month challenge to secure 6 rent HMOs (26 en-suite bedrooms so far!) with zero personal cash, using investor funding and relentless action
- Overcoming fear of public speaking through the Academy— from forgetting his wedding speech to confidently leading Bristol Inner Circle events and delivering talks
- The power of travel, bilingualism, and cultural immersion in reshaping mindset and opening new opportunities
- Creating and publishing The Cosmic Surfing Snail as a dyslexic adult: turning ideas into reality, rewriting drafts, and using the book to teach kids about ocean protection and resilience
- Why putting yourself out there (even when uncomfortable) builds self-worth, attracts opportunities, and snowballs into bigger wins
- Ignoring criticism and hate while staying tough-skinned to inspire others—especially in the Academy—to take massive action with no money down
